This week's guest speaker was David Cain, Alumni Manager, with the Wounded Warrior Project. PRESENTATION HIGHLIGHTS: The Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) is aVeteran Service Organization serving post 9/11 veterans who have incurred somesort of injury during service Mission: "To honor andempower Wounded Warriors" There are currently 95,000 alumni (Warriors) across thecountry Support is offered through shared experiences, long term support, camaraderie, resource education Programs fall under four primary "pillars:" Engagement,Mind, Body, and Economic Empowerment Pillars WWP staffdecide on a case-by-case basis which programs/pillars to focus on for each individual The Engagement Pillar includes (1) alumni group events, (2) benefits services (i.e., assistance from Veteran Service Officers), and (3) and the Backpack Program for wounded soldiers that the WWP was founded on (program has been extended to include backpack with resources for caregivers) The Mind Pillar encompasses (1) the Warrior Care Network of hospitals equipped to provide care to Warriors at highest need for treatment for PTSD and TBI, (2) Peer support groups, (3) Project Odyssey (3-5 day outdoor environmental retreats), and (4) an Independence Program for those with severe injuries The Body Pillar includes a (1) physicalhealth support system featuring health expos (show Warriors how to work around injuries, eat well, set goals,etc.), and (2) the Solider Ride program--an adaptive cycling event The Economic Empowerment Pillar encompasses (1) workforce training for Warriors and caregivers, (2) efforts to engage with politicians to effect policy benefiting Wounded Warriors, and (3) the Community Integration program, which allows the WWP to financially “help agencies that help warriors�
