FEBRUARY 1 DISCUSSION VOLUNTEER SUPPORT CALL NOTES Monday, February 1, 2016, 5-6 pm VOLUNTEER SUPPORT CALL Summary of Volunteer Discussion: Issue/Concern: A veteran is seeking food assistance. Suggestions/Resolution: Salvation Army (http://www.needhelppayingbills.com/html/macomb_county_salvation_army_a.html) provides food assistance, and it also might be worth speaking to a County Veteran Counselor (http://www.macvc.net/michigan_county_veterans_counselors_search.php). Issue/Concern: A veteran recently died by suicide. Is their long-time partner (not married) eligible for survivor’s benefits? Suggestions/Resolution: No, because in Michigan there are not laws recognizing “common law” marriages. A surviving partner is only eligible for benefits if they were married.
