Commencement Speaker and Dean’s Medal Recipient
Dean’s Medal Recipient Louis P. Ciminelli is chairman & CEO of LPCiminelli, a full-service construction firm ranked in the top 150 of all construction companies in the United States. Dedicated to public service, Ciminelli is active in the education and arts sectors in Buffalo and across the U.S. He is chairman of the Buffalo School Dean’s Council, an advisory group of distinguished leaders in our professions.
Walter J. Hood
Walter J. Hood is an environmental designer, artist and educator based in Oakland, California. He is a professor at the University of California, Berkeley's Landscape Architecture and Environmental Design Department, which he chaired from 1998 to 2002. His studio practice, Hood Design, has been engaged in environmental design, urban design, art installations, and research commissions since 1992. Hood works in the urban civic realm, from small community-based places to large-scale landscape commissions. His studio recently completed the UB Solar Strand, a 750-KW photovoltaic array within the campus landscape at the University at Buffalo, the new Powell Street Promenade in San Francisco, which was recently awarded an ASLA Honor Award and the new Sculpture Terrace for the Jackson Museum of Wildlife Art in Wyoming. Hood Design was also responsible for the gardens and landscape of the Herzog & de Meuron–designed De Young Museum in San Francisco. Earlier projects located in Oakland, such as Lafayette Square and Splash Pad Park, are regarded as transformative designs for the field of landscape architecture. Earlier this year, Hood was appointed as the inaugural holder of the David K. Woo Chair in Environmental Design. Hood served as a Goldman Sachs Design Fellow for the Smithsonian Institute and as a MIT fellow for Robert Taylor in 2011 and was the 2009 recipient of the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award for Landscape Design. He has exhibited and lectured on his professional projects and speculative works internationally. Today we recognize Walter Hood as a 2014 Dean’s Medal Recipient for his contributions to the ecological, cultural and social betterment of society through the making and remaking of landscapes. His design for the UB Solar Strand demonstrates his commitment to the practice of urban design and landscape architecture in ways that are sensitive to place and the people who occupy them.
Ciminelli leads 200 full-time professionals committed to delivering high-value-added services in the areas of construction management, general contracting, public-private partnerships, program management, Louis P. Ciminelli and sustainable energy solutions. In recent years, Ciminelli has worked on developing strategic relationships and pursuing select opportunities that have expanded the company’s presence throughout New York State, the East Coast and the Midwest. These relationships have also driven the firms’ international growth, resulting in the company's successful delivery of projects in China, Lithuania and Costa Rica. Even as the company’s geographic reach has grown substantially, Ciminelli maintains the company’s strong connection to Buffalo, where it was formed over 50 years ago and is still headquartered today. Having established a commitment to corporate citizenship as one of LPCiminelli’s core values, Ciminelli has long believed in the importance of private sector involvement in public service. In recent years, he has devoted much of his time and philanthropy to two particular areas – education and the arts. He is a founding member of the "Say Yes To Education" effort in the City of Buffalo. He also chairs the world-renowned Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra Board of Trustees and is a trustee at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, a leading museum for modern and contemporary art. Mr. Ciminelli is a member of the Dean’s International Council at the University of Chicago’s Harris School, one of the leading public policy schools in the country, and is a member of the Dean’s National Council at the prestigious Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester. Previously, Ciminelli was appointed by the Governor of the State of New York as trustee, and then chairman of the New York Power Authority, the largest stateowned power utility organization in the United States. He is past chairman of the Buffalo Niagara Partnership and chairman emeritus of 43 X 79 – an organization of leading business executives in Western New York. For this and other work, he has been honored as Executive of the Year by the University at Buffalo School of Management (2007) and the Richard J. Wehle School of Business at Canisius College (2009). Louis P. Ciminelli is honored today as a 2014 Dean’s Medal Recipient for his lifetime of contributions to the revitalization of the Buffalo Niagara region through building and design, culture, art and education. The reach of his public service extends across the nation and around the world and is now contributing to a stronger future for the Buffalo School through leadership of our Dean’s Council.
Through the Dean’s Medal we recognize individuals for their extraordinary accomplishment in the fields of planning, architecture or environmental design through pedagogy, research, creative activity and leadership. The highest honor bestowed by the Buffalo School, the Dean’s Medal acknowledges distinguished lifetime career achievements that develop, improve and sustain our school, university, region or world. 6
COMMENCEMENT 2014
SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence
The Mace Designed to tell the story of the university and the Niagara Frontier, the University at Buffalo mace was fashioned by silversmith Hudson Roysher of Arcadia, CA. It was used for the first time in the 1962 general commencement.
Trenton Paul Van Epps Trenton Paul Van Epps is graduating with a bachelor of science in architecture. As a student, Trenton has integrated exceptional academic excellence with distinctive leadership, campus involvement and community service. As president of UB’s Senenmut Chapter of the Alpha Rho Chi architecture fraternity, he led the efforts to host the National 100th Anniversary APX Leadership Conference in Buffalo. Trenton’s team organized a vibrant conference program that showcased the university and City of Buffalo for architecture students from across the United States. In 2013, he participated in the award-winning "Architecture + Education" program, which places architecture students and practitioners in Buffalo Public Schools to introduce design education to elementary-age children. Trenton was also a member of the design team for the Burchfield Penney Art Center's "Front Yard" installation, helping to create the world’s first permanent, environmentally-responsive, outdoor audio and video installation and a new cultural space for Buffalo. Trenton sets standards of excellence for all students. He inspires his peers and colleagues with his enthusiastic participation in all of life’s experiences, especially those that contribute to his goal of serving his community through the discipline of architecture.
The mace is silver with accents of lapis and howlite to represent the university’s colors. It is topped by a miniature walled structure representing the City of Buffalo. Engraved atop the city are three arrows bound together, symbolizing the unity of UB and the city. A band of alternating jewels of lapis and howlite encircles the head of the mace and bears the founding dates of the 13 divisions that composed the university in 1962. The UB arms appear on the front of the head. On the back are the arms of the United States, encircled by the name Millard Fillmore and the dates during which he was president and UB chancellor. The discovery of Lake Erie in 1669 by Louis Joliet and early explorations by Robert de LaSalle are symbolized on the left side of the head. A crest on the right side symbolizes the university’s role as a dynamic center of human growth and welfare. The wild rose, the state flower, is depicted in a floral motif at the top and bottom of the mace’s head. Encircling the ends of the shaft are three wavy lines representing intellect and water, the latter a reference to the Niagara River and Great Lakes. The motto “University and City: Community” is lettered in Latin around the knob of the shaft. Traditionally used in university ceremonials, the mace is a symbol of enlightened authority. The mace bearer is the chair of the university’s Faculty Senate.

History of the Buffalo School of Architecture & Planning The State University of New York Board of Trustees authorized the establishment of the School of Architecture and Environmental Design at the university in 1967. Today, it remains the only school of architecture and planning within the SUNY system and offers accredited professional degrees in architecture and urban planning. John Eberhard, the first dean of the school, was appointed in 1968, planned a curriculum and assembled a faculty with classes beginning in the spring of 1969. Eberhard and his founding faculty engineered an innovative approach to the teaching and thinking about architecture and planning, formulating a school on the broadly based concept of environmental design. They developed a pedagogy rooted in the idea that the design of the environment is dependent on processes, both systematic and humane, that emphasize technical and social issues. When Dean Harold L. Cohen joined the school in 1974, he continued the innovations started by Eberhard and moved the school to Hayes Hall. Cohen founded the Friends of the School of Architecture and Planning and together saw the establishment of the school’s library. He also recruited faculty and staff that almost doubled the size of the school. Dean Cohen was a tireless champion for resources for the school and expanded the working relationship with the community. Following the retirement of Dean Cohen, Dr. Michael P. Brooks became dean (1984-87) followed by Interim Dean Judith E. Albino (1987-88). Bruno B. Freschi, O.C., joined the school in 1988 and continued to build on this solid foundation. During his tenure, Dean Freschi worked to establish the school’s annual Clarkson Visiting Chair as well as Intersight, the school’s academic journal. Between 1999 and 2003, Acting Dean Thomas E. Headrick, and Interim Deans John B. Sheffer II and Dr. Kenneth J. Levy provided the leadership of the school. Brian Carter served as dean from 2003 through 2010, and worked extensively to re-establish the visibility of the school through publications, exhibit and lecture series featuring national and international scholars. His work advanced the level of discussion about architecture and planning in our region and established a foundation for improvements in our facilities and advanced degree programs. Robert G. Shibley, FAIA, AICP, was appointed as dean in January 2011 and with faculty, staff, and students has embraced a mission to engage the professions of architecture and planning creatively and responsibly in a rapidly changing world. As the “Buffalo School,” our program is deeply embedded in Buffalo and its surrounding region, our primary site of investigation for global issues in architecture and planning and an international city with rich architectural and urban design legacies. The school’s social commitment to making better places extends around the world, from faculty research with a global reach to our distinctive study abroad program, the largest at UB. Dean Shibley is also building on the powerful intellectual traditions in architecture and planning, constructing stronger relationships among them, and reaching out to reinforce as well as build new relationships among other professions and disciplines. It means being creatively engaged in forecasting and experimentation by asking, how will architecture and planning address the challenges and opportunities facing the communities we serve and our environment? This requires greater attention to, and accommodation of, social and ecological justice in design and planning, technological and material innovations, and experimentation with the artistic and cultural productions of both professions. To further advance the mission, the Buffalo School recently initiated new curricular vehicles including a PhD in Urban and Regional Planning and a Master of Science in Architecture. Just this year the school launched a graduate program in historic preservation and urban design as well as an advanced graduate certificate in historic preservation, both joint efforts between the Departments of Architecture and Urban and Regional Planning. The Buffalo School has commenced a $50 million dollar restoration of Hayes and Crosby Halls, our home and the heart of the UB South Campus. Over the next few years, we will participate in the planning, design, and construction of these projects as part of the education experience at the school. The projects promise a dramatic restoration of historic structures designed to meet stringent environmental standards and further restore the historic campus landscape laid out by E.B. Green in 1927. The projects are part of implementing the University at Buffalo’s Comprehensive Physical Plan. Graduates, family and friends are invited to monitor our progress at http://ap.buffalo.edu/
