A Message from the Dean The broad definition of the word “philanthropy” includes such phrases as “good will” and “promoting human welfare.” When I think of the generous people who have given to the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM), those words inevitably spring to mind. Their reasons for supporting the School may vary a bit, but in every case, our donors know they are making good-will, good-faith contributions to human welfare, enabling us to provide the kind of holistic oral healthcare for which GSDM is known. Far down the line, beyond new buildings and innovative programming, beyond groundbreaking practices and unparalleled skills, it is for our patients that we do what we do. I am tremendously pleased and proud to offer this special publication devoted to celebrating philanthropy at GSDM. We’ve selected a handful of deeply generous donors to introduce to you, offering insights into why they chose to support the School. (Were we to have presented introductions to all of our donors here, this book might have required a forklift for delivery!) We trust their stories will resonate with your own experiences at the School, perhaps eliciting memories of Boston and of GSDM colleagues and friends; we know they will make you proud to be part of the Goldman family. As our building renovation and expansion project continues full steam ahead, we hope these pages remind you that behind our School’s burgeoning growth and proud stature are the people who make our innovative physical and programmatic progress possible: our donors. With deepest good will, they are supporting our new, state-of-the-art patient treatment rooms, enabling the education of talented new practitioners, and keeping GSDM in the forefront of schools of dental medicine. They are, in the deepest sense, philanthropists—promoters of human welfare. Our gratitude to them, and to so many others in our community, is beyond measure. Sincerely,

Jeffrey W. Hutter, DMD, MEd Dean and Spencer N. Frankl Professor in Dental Medicine Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine

Meet Maria Petroche The first Zanni Scholar brings a love of periodontics—and patient care. By Frances B. King Dr. Oreste “Russ” Zanni would have wholeheartedly applauded Maria Fernanda Petroche.

couldn’t envision what opportunities his two daughters might ever have there.”

Zanni, the late, beloved clinical director of the Department of Periodontology at the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM), would have been thrilled that the very first winner of the scholarship he made possible was a young, energetic, inquisitive, determined professional, a woman whose journey with her family to the United States at age 10 had set the tone for her future. The two would certainly have shared jokes, wisdom, and wit, despite the differences in their ages, and Petroche would have joined the league of devoted Zanni disciples.

After settling in Florida, the family began the long process of becoming American citizens, while Fernando started up his now-15-year-old cafeteria business for a major AT&T call center in Ocala, Florida. He also started a furniture import business, an Italian restaurant, and a second cafeteria business for a nearby college. There were other ventures, some successful, some not. But all of them were lessons in service.

A life-changing day It was 2003, and Fernando and Rosi Petroche had just purchased a wonderful stretch of land in Santo Domingo de los Colorados, Ecuador, bordering the province of Esmeraldas. There they would build their dream house, a house where they could raise a family and enjoy the fruits of their hard work in the company that Fernando had built, with Rosi as company accountant. Then came the horrifying day when Fernando, after not meeting the demands of a group that regularly preyed on rising entrepreneurs, was kidnapped. He joined a long line of entrepreneurs who had suffered similar fates in Ecuador, all of them targets for gangs in search of ransom or revenge. Fernando remembers hearing the kidnappers discuss how and when they would shoot him. But when the kidnappers got into a multi-car accident, they panicked, dumped Fernando in a ditch, and fled. Locals found him the next day, but there were rumors in the following weeks that the kidnappers would try again. Fernando, a trained biochemist, faced a choice: move his family to a different city in Ecuador, or leave the country entirely and go to the United States, where he had family. He and Rosi decided to pull up stakes, sell the company, the land, and the half-finished dream house, and start over in the US. “It took time to make all the arrangements,” Maria Petroche, who was 10 at the time, remembers. “But my father had thought hard about what our future would be like if the family remained in Ecuador. In those frightening days, he simply

Says Petroche: “He would always tell me, ‘You’re going to be uncomfortable in situations where you have to make decisions, and sometimes you won’t know whether you’re making the right decision.’ I learned from him that nothing comes from comfort zones. He was always putting himself out there, doing the best for our family, and building this lifestyle and work ethic for us. “It was a great model.” A new life in the US From early childhood, Maria Petroche loved science and wanted to learn everything she could about anything that moved. She studied piano and learned English in school. Her love and aptitude for the language, as well as its inclusion in the regular school curriculum in Santo Domingo, helped soften the huge change from Ecuador to the United States. Her parents learned English alongside her. In Florida, Petroche continued her schooling and then went on to college, where she studied biology. Then it was off to Nova Southeastern University for dental school. There, she fell in love with periodontics. And today she’s a resident in the Advanced Specialty Education Program in Periodontics

at GSDM. This 36-month program combines a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS) in Periodontology and a Master’s of Science in Dentistry that requires a research project. “In dental school, I loved everything,” Petroche says. “I loved learning, loved getting my hands on things. As I went through, I kind of tailored what I wanted to do more of and what I was good at. I knew I loved puzzles and things that required thinking, reassembling, and manual skill. “So, when I watched surgeries in dentistry, I was always paying so much attention to detail that, to me, oral surgery became its own singular realm of dentistry—and I wanted to explore that. The specialty is very big on pathology. For example, cancer often presents in the mouth, as oral cancer, sometimes before it presents elsewhere in the body—in the prostate, breast, lungs, or thyroid. Lesions might appear in the mouth before symptoms appear elsewhere. “I absolutely loved learning about this and told my parents that I knew I could start working right after dental school, because I loved what I did. But what I truly loved, and still do, is how a periodontist can take a patient from a cancer diagnosis, with the prospect of her losing all her teeth and then getting dentures, to the chance that we could save those teeth and the patient would get another 10 years from them. We can do this! We can open up these options and improve the quality of life. “For me, periodontics is all about overall health. We can look at systemic diseases and see how our specialties are linked to them. Diabetes is one. Obesity is another. Smoking is a big one. These are three of the largest lifestyle challenges we deal with in the US. And the way that bones and gums react to certain medications related to these diseases—all of this requires study before we can diagnose issues in the mouth.” Petroche is not just passionate about her profession in and of itself. She is eager to serve her community through her profession, and she aims to perfect her clinical skills at GSDM. But she’d like a family, too; she is newly engaged to a dental resident at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. “My three years here are a short period of time compared to the rest of my life for work and family, so my focus right now is on honing those skills.” GSDM benefits: the patients and faculty One of the great things about the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine, Petroche believes, is the patient pool the School attracts: “We are the largest school in Massachusetts, for example, that has a Ryan White grant to treat HIV patients and those with blood-borne diseases.”

4 CAMPAIGN IMPACT REPORT

“For me, periodontics is all about overall health. We can look at systemic diseases and see how our specialties are linked to them.” Petroche chose GSDM partially for this challenge, but also for its balanced approach to treatment. “You learn to do everything,” she says. “From biopsies to complex treatment planning, to advanced surgical techniques, to ‘fast’ orthodontics and braces or piezocision, to treating anxious patients with IV sedation at no additional charge, to managing emergency patients who come in with pain. It’s a combined specialty, and it’s patient-focused. I think this makes the program very well rounded.” Among the greatest things about GSDM? “The faculty,” Petroche says. “If you want to try something, and you can show them the evidence for something you think will benefit the patient more than the other options they were given, you’re free to try it. You’re free to tailor everything to the individual patient. “And this isn’t just the open-mindedness of younger faculty. We have faculty who graduated in the 1970s, and we have faculty who graduated in 2016. So that’s a huge plus because we have the very classic original studies, alongside the very most contemporary practices.” So why periodontics? “The first person I shadowed in dental school wasn’t a dentist,” recalls Petroche. “He was actually an oral surgeon. I didn’t have a car in college, so I would ride my bike everywhere. And the closest office that dealt with dentistry was an oral surgeon’s office. I think that’s also where my passion for surgery sprouted from. “This surgeon was amazing. He had been an army dentist, and he went into oral surgery through the service. He had his own very busy practice. Because he was an oral surgeon, he was able to put the patient into deep sedation for certain extractions and other procedures. One day, he had me hold a patient’s head up to keep the airway open, and I remember it being like the heaviest, hardest thing I had ever done! It was an eight-pound weight! Of course, today, nonpractitioners can’t assist with procedures. But in those days, I think I showed him more interest than other students had.”

COVER STORY

Remembering Oreste Zanni Oreste “Russ” Zanni was a beloved figure at GSDM, a man possessed of humility, a razor wit, and a generosity of spirit profoundly missed by those he left behind. His longtime friend and colleague Serge Dibart, professor and chair of the School’s Department of Periodontology and director of the Advanced Specialty Education Program in Periodontology, remembers him as “my best friend at GSDM, a fantastic educator and teacher, and someone who was absolutely devoted to the profession and to teaching.” Zanni’s greatest wish, Dibart remembers, was to give something back to the school that had trained

Oreste Zanni

A holistic, patient-focused practice Petroche has a clear fascination with all things concerning the mouth and everything else above the neck. But other critical elements of a good dental practice rivet her too, including how practitioners prepare for and approach patients. “I’ve seen doctors, family physicians for example, who don’t really know much about the mouth,” she notes. “So one thing I like to do when I first treat a patient is talk with his or her doctor by phone, to get a sense of the patient’s overall health and see how it may be affecting what’s going on in the mouth.” The all-important clinical exam of a patient who comes in for treatment includes a check for any nodes, asymmetries, or pain in the neck and shoulders—all of which may be keys to oral health. Petroche finds dental technology an inspiration too, and it’s now far different than even just a few years ago when she began dental school. “We’re moving at a pace that I can’t even tell you I’ll be able to fully catch up with,” she says. “But that’s part of the attraction of the field: what we can do in one visit today we simply could not do 10 or 15 years ago.” For those coming up in the profession, she’d like to see an increasing emphasis on patient-focused practice. “There is so much to learn in our training that this element can sometimes be squeezed into one or two lectures, rather than a deeper immersion. Even today, I’ve actually shadowed dentists who speak to patients while looking only at their computer screens,” she says. “What does this say about the patientdoctor relationship?

him—he was a 1976 graduate of GSDM’s advanced program in periodontics—and had given him his living for so many years. In 2013, when Zanni was the clinical director of the Department of Periodontology, he suffered a fatal heart attack while doing what he loved best: teaching in the clinic. In 2015, Dean Jeffrey Hutter announced that the School had received a bequest of more than $3 million from Zanni’s estate. The funds were designated to establish an endowed full scholarship in Zanni’s name for a resident enrolled in the Advanced Specialty Education Program in Periodontology.

“I remember one faculty member saying, ‘Don’t treat your patient like anyone other than family. Pretend it’s your mom, or your dad, or your sister. Explain things to them, and don’t assume they will know what you know.’” Even as she urges predoctoral students to study communication skills, she says this has been a focus for her own continuing education. Some parting wisdom for other new students? “Looking back from a year ago, when I was applying to a few different programs and a lot of stuff was going on in dental school, what I found most valuable was, when it comes to our field, the reason we do what we do is the patient,” Petroche stresses. Put the patient first, whether you’re doing community service or anything else related to medicine or dentistry, she says. Put the patient first and everything else will follow. “Patient-centered care is the way to think now, instead of focusing only on this mouth or that tooth,” she concludes. “Don’t let your ethics become gray, under the pressure of meeting patient quotas in corporate practice.” As for schooling in the practice, Petroche would want to remind students that they’ll go through tough times and sacrifice free time. She’d want them to remember the patient then and all the patients in the future. She’s particularly eager to see women practitioners do well by doing good for their patients. “They are not common in our field, and I love seeing them succeed. I love seeing them excel.”

Profiles in giving The Art of Putting Patients First Tom Kilgore didn’t originally plan on dentistry. He had his heart set on marine biology. But then came the family dentist who inspired Kilgore to think in—well, more practical terms. Kilgore headed to the University of Pennsylvania, where a dynamic professor of oral surgery set the tone for his future. After a residency at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), an MGH faculty member invited him to join his practice in Beverly, Massachusetts, in partnership as an oral surgeon. Kilgore was delighted. “But just as I was getting started there in 1973, GSDM’s Don Booth [the first chair of the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery] came to me because they were starting a DMD program at BU. He asked me to join him, and in doing so the oral surgery faculty doubled in size—from one of us to two.” In the following years, Kilgore held several leadership positions at GSDM, among them director of the predoctoral oral surgery program, professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery, assistant dean for curriculum, and associate dean for predoctoral programs. And now Kilgore is working half-time and happily back where he started, seeing patients and teaching students in the patient treatment center. Why not retire? “This is my school,” he says, “and I’m still having too much fun!” Kilgore and his wife, Colleen, will honor their years at GSDM and mark its rise into the ranks of top US dental schools by making a generous gift to fund a new patient treatment room at GSDM. The rooms are the first place where dental students begin practicing on actual patients. 6 CAMPAIGN IMPACT REPORT

Colleen and Tom Kilgore

Connecting with patients first Of all his roles, Kilgore loves teaching best, especially with third- and fourthyear students who, when they arrive in the oral surgery clinic, have classroom knowledge but only a little clinical experience.

“I enjoy treating patients,” he says, “and it was important for me to stay current, to continue to learn. For example, when implantology became more refined, I learned that. Things really do evolve quickly in our field. You’ve got to keep up.”

“They’re usually hesitant to do surgery at first,” he says. “There is no preclinical lab for oral surgery, so no official ‘practice’ time. You simply head in and take out your first tooth.”

Kilgore notes that his clinic sees “a diverse and challenging patient population,” adding, “Many, many of our patients don’t have regular dentistry. They’re not coming here because they’re been referred for a procedure. They’re here because they’ve got a toothache. Often, we’re dealing with pain and infection.

Yes, it can be nerve-racking, he adds, but what he loves about supervising in the clinic is teaching students to be professionals in patient care—to impart to the student that the patient is the chief focus, there to be taken care of and served. One thing Kilgore made sure to do, as his career took him more deeply into administrative duties, was to keep his hand in patient care.

“With so many patients coming in with complex medical problems, one of the things we stress with students is the importance of understanding the whole patient, and seeing dental problems within the context of the patient’s overall health picture. And, regardless of their individual circumstances, our

PROFILES IN GIVING

patients are treated under the same motto as those who visit Boston Medical Center: exceptional care, without exception. I think that’s the right message and find myself preaching it.” A reason for philanthropy To hear Kilgore talk about his years with GSDM is to hear a professional who is highly accomplished and deeply grateful, one with a real sense of ownership. “I’ve worked for all three GSDM deans over my 43 years here,” he says. “Henry Goldman hired me, then I worked for

Spencer Frankl, and now Dean Jeffrey Hutter, and every one of them brought vision and deep commitment to the School. I see in Jeff the same feeling of ownership of GSDM that I have.” Kilgore says it’s the people that have always interested him in his work, and it’s clear that this interest extends into the wider world too: he volunteers as a “wayfinder” at the Museum of Fine Arts every Wednesday evening. “I’m no art historian, but I love the museum and get a kick out of showing visitors how to find their way through the museum,” he says. “It’s another way to donate to something you believe in.”

When the campaign for the new building began taking shape, the Kilgores wanted to do something for it—something that could last, that would “represent what is important to Colleen and me, and is more than the regular contributions we make each year,” he says. “Our gift to the School is a mark of respect, affection, and gratitude for the School’s incredible growth and stature. We’re giving back some of what I received and continue to receive here.”

Giving Back to Where You Came From Khushbu Malhotra, DMD 18, cried every day for a month at dental school. For this American-born daughter of Indian parents (her father immigrated to the US in the 1970s, her mother in the 1980s), dental school had not even been on the horizon. She was a second-year student at Hunter College in New York, preparing for a career in gynecology. Then came a persuasive conversation with cousins, both of whom had trained as dentists in India, and the wheels began turning. Dental school? In India? “I was 20,” she remembers. “And that conversation upended everything.” Within a few short weeks, she was on a plane to India, to a state called Himachal Pradesh, and to a five-year commitment to study dentistry in a country she’d never lived in. Not that she was a total stranger—there’d been plenty of family visits to relatives, and cousins were waiting to lend a hand. Still.

Khushbu and Sumeet Malhotra

“Talk about a culture clash,” Malhotra says. She’d been born and raised in Queens, New York, and had never lived away from her parents. Theirs was a modern family who nonetheless kept their native culture and customs

very much alive at home. But this was another world. “The school had a dress code,” she recalls. “You wore Indian attire, which meant a salwar kameez: a long shirt of a

specified length, and loose pants.” No dangling earrings, no nail polish, and no loose hair—only a single tight braid.

“And I said, ‘What?’ I was 21, and marriage had never even occurred to me.”

She learned to do her laundry in a bucket, and she took exams by candlelight when the electricity went out—sometimes for days. She was often lonely and wondered whether she was doing the right thing. And, yes, she cried a lot.

But a week later, they were engaged. And five months later, Khushbu secretly flew to the US, and she and Sumeet were married in a courthouse ceremony.

But before long, what had seemed alien and strange became routine and acceptable. Language was not a problem, since she already spoke Hindi, and she began to feel that dentistry was what she was meant to do in life. Living and studying in rural India, alongside her highly competitive classmates, she says, “made me stronger mentally.” A serendipitous gathering During her second year at school, Malhotra’s school organized a large social gathering on campus, where she met a young Indian dentist named Sumeet Malhotra, who had graduated from the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) in 2010. He impressed her, and he invited her out for coffee. “I thought, just a nice meeting, some chitchat, and that would be that,” she said. But he had more serious intentions. I’m here for matrimonial purposes, he told her.

“It began as a telephone marriage,” she says, “since he was practicing in Texas and I still had three more years of dental school.” They did eventually have a traditional wedding in India, in 2014, the year she graduated from dental school. The two then settled in San Antonio, and she began applying to schools for advanced dental study in the US. The day she received her acceptance from GSDM, she discovered she was pregnant. So, after deferring her entrance for one year, she began the DMD Advanced Standing program at GSDM. She would attend classes all week, then hop a plane to New York for the weekend to see her little boy, who was being cared for there by her mother. With her husband working in Texas, their child in New York, and Malhotra in Boston, she recalls that it was “a tough year.” But the second year, the family finally united in Massachusetts. The Malhotras have just celebrated their first year as a family under one roof.

Giving back to GSDM “I was surprised when I got to BU to discover that first-years were already working on manikins and learning to treat cavities, and we hadn’t even held our firsthand tool until our third year,” Malhotra remembers. “I also found that many of my BU classmates were older and had specialized, where I had not. I learned so very much in that program. I really saw dentistry as a bigger picture and discovered I had a real passion for it. BU gave me that.” These days, she returns to campus occasionally. When she does, she says, she can say with confidence, “This is my home. This is my school. I know where I’m going.” Sumeet and Khushbu Malhotra both have much to celebrate about their GSDM experiences, so when they first heard about the School’s new building renovation and expansion project, they wanted to support it. The two also decided that supporting a patient treatment room would be both meaningful and practical, as they knew that the treatment rooms are critical to the School’s ability to train its students and serve its constituents. “My husband has told me that he believes he would not be where he is in professional life today had he not gone to BU. That, and he follows this rule: you always give back to wherever you came from.”

Advocating, Lifelong, for Patients with Special Needs Steve Perlman is an advocate with a capital A, a practitioner devoted to the healthcare of people with intellectual disabilities. In fact, he’s a globe-trotting whirlwind whose focus on healthcare goes far beyond the confines of his specialty, pediatric dentistry.

8 CAMPAIGN IMPACT REPORT

After graduating in 1976 from the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) with a master of science in dentistry and a certificate of advanced graduate study in pediatric dentistry, Perlman went into private practice in Lynn,

Massachusetts. There, he treated both children and adults with intellectual disabilities, one of the few practices to do so. He also began pursuing a larger mission: to break down the barriers that often prevent dental and medical professionals from working with

PROFILES IN GIVING

people with intellectual disabilities. It was a mission that grew far beyond Massachusetts. Perlman has now chosen to honor GSDM and those who inspired and mentored him there by providing support for a new state-of-the-art patient treatment room at GSDM that will bear his name. These fully equipped patient treatment rooms, part of the current renovation and expansion of the School, are where dentists in training first begin to apply their classroom learning to the care of actual patients. Early advocacy and Special Smiles Perlman’s journey into healthcare advocacy began formally in 1993. That’s when the late Gerald M. Kramer, then chair of GSDM periodontology and Senator Edward M. Kennedy’s dentist, recommended that the Kennedy family enlist him to treat Rosemary Kennedy, the senator’s intellectually disabled sister. With the approval of Eunice Kennedy Shriver (founder of Special Olympics) and Senator Kennedy, Perlman gathered a multidisciplinary dental and medical team and conducted a successful oral rehabilitation on the then 63-year-old Rosemary, restoring her oral health and addressing several other health concerns as well. Shriver then brought Perlman into her Special Olympics world, challenging him to “bring healthcare to people with intellectual disabilities all over the world.” Together they created the Special Olympics Special Smiles Program, initially to provide oral health screenings and improve access to healthcare for athletes competing in the Massachusetts Special Olympics. Today, Special Smiles is part of the larger Healthy Athletes Program, partially funded by the Centers for Disease Control and encompassing eight different healthcare disciplines, all geared to serving children and adults

Steve and Harriet Perlman

with special needs in hundreds of Special Olympics programs around the world every year. Perlman, at 72, is still meeting Shriver’s challenge, running some 200 Special Olympics programs a year in more than 100 countries. (The 2019 World Games will be in Abu Dhabi.) A cofounder of the American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry, Perlman is now retired from private practice but continues his energetic advocacy, teaching, and research, earning awards and accolades from national and international societies and institutions. At BU, he received both the GSDM Distinguished Alumni Award and the Boston University Distinguished Alumni Award, one of only two Goldman School graduates to have received both honors. At GSDM, Perlman was inspired by the late Spencer Frankl—the School’s longest-running dean and another of Perlman’s mentors—who had his own early interests in patients with special

needs. After his graduate studies, Perlman was invited to join the dental school faculty to teach dentistry for this historically underserved population. (Perlman had graduated from George Washington University, attended dental school at New York University, served in the US Navy, and then returned for graduate school at GSDM.) “I think we received better training in treating people with special needs than anyone else in the country,” Perlman says. And he still remembers an even earlier inspiration: “When I was a college research assistant in psychology, I met a patient my age, around 22, who’d had polio,” Perlman recalls. “He was in an iron lung. As I talked with him, he watched me in the mirror above his head. It was devastating for me. And it was a turning point. I knew I wanted to combine my dental career with this passion for special patient care.”

Small-Town Dentist, Great Big Horizon “It was actually my mother who got me into dentistry,” says Resmi Nair, DMD 01. “She needed quite a bit of dental work—this was in India—and I was very impressed by the dentist who was treating her. I think that was when I first got interested in the profession. I had always known I wanted to be in the medical field, but that dentist impressed me, and that pushed me to decide on dentistry.” She attended Jamanlal Goenka Dental College in the state of Maharashtra. After her marriage to Prajeet P. Nair, she moved to the US to join him while he completed his master’s in engineering. In 1999, she enrolled in the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) two-year DMD Advanced Standing program for internationally trained practitioners hoping to practice dentistry in America. The program was comprehensive, offering her a range of researchbased learning opportunities in stem cell biology, mentorship, community outreach, and clinical experience emphasizing oral health. “Boston is a famous city, rich in history, and I wanted to be there,” she says. She chose general dentistry and began her career in Worcester at the Great Brook Valley Community Health Center, now called the Edward M. Kennedy Health Center. But she wanted a small-town practice of her own. So, in 2009, she purchased a practice in Rutland, Massachusetts, from a retiring dentist. It was very small—just three chairs—and was open only three days a week. “From there, we grew,” she says, and last year she was able to purchase land and build her own building. “Now we have eight dental operatories and chairs, and state-ofthe-art equipment and technology. We do nearly everything right on site.” 10 CAMPAIGN IMPACT REPORT

And her practice, called Carewell Dental, is the only dental office in town. The location is a good one, says Nair. It’s near Worcester, where several of her colleagues in the Advanced Standing program have their own practices. She’s also a member of two study clubs, whose local member practitioners (including dentists, orthodontists, pediatric dentists, periodontists, and others) in the area gather once a month to talk about treatment practices and cases, and engage in collegial problemsolving. This helps her know what local specialists she can rely on when, as a sole practitioner, she needs to. Nair also joined a dental sleep study group, since dentists now frequently address sleep apnea in their treatment plans. Their patients present with wear on the teeth, suggesting nighttime teeth clenching, and sometimes wake up with dry mouth and morning headaches— some of the issues noted with sleep-related disorders. Or they have anatomical risk factors like an enlarged tongue or tonsils, thus presenting other possible breathing issues, especially in children. “And,” adds Nair, “we see our patients every six months, which is more often than they may see their own physicians. So we can track these problems more readily and advise patients to discuss them with their primary care physicians or a sleep specialist.” Nair says she might one day specialize in sleep apnea within her practice. “People think of dentistry as only teeth,” she says. “But we’re also interested in the overall health of the patient.” And dentistry isn’t her only love. Nair enjoys spending time with her family (she and her husband are the parents of 14-year-old twins) and traveling. She is an accomplished dancer, having trained

for eight years in Bharatanatyam, an Indian classical dance from Tamil Nadu, and also enjoys nontraditional folk and Bollywood dancing. She performs in various cultural and charitable events. Giving to GSDM “I really enjoyed attending GSDM,” Nair says. “It’s where I met great colleagues who became my friends. And we had the best faculty—they all became my inspirations. So I wanted to do something. When I heard about the GSDM building project, I decided it would be a good opportunity for me to give something back, to both the incoming students and the patients. Giving a patient treatment room benefits both.” She’s already seen the 3-D layout of a patient treatment room and found it “amazing!” Her room will be named for Nair and her husband. What’s more, she’s so enthusiastic about the rooms that she has recruited two classmates to support patient treatment rooms of their own. Since the building will ultimately include 10 practices, each with 10 patient treatment rooms, Nair hopes that one practice will consist entirely of treatment rooms named by her classmates. “I think GSDM is the best school for internationally trained dentists,” Nair says. “It was certainly the most welcoming to me. As an international, right from day one, I felt at home.” That alone, she says, is worth celebrating.

BUILDING A FUTURE

The room where it happens

The new patient treatment rooms at the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) offer an opportunity to create a legacy at the School and to support excellence in teaching, learning, patient care, and research—in the place where dentists really learn the art and science of their professions. At GSDM, we teach dentistry in a variety of spaces and in many different ways. But most dentists would agree that the operatories— which we call patient treatment rooms—are the most important and memorable spaces of our education. There, dentist and patient first meet. Third- and fourth-year predoctoral DMD and second-year DMD Advanced Standing students spend nearly all of their time in these rooms. Under close faculty supervision, they begin to apply their classroom learning to the care of actual patients. They learn to collaborate with dental colleagues. And, perhaps most important, they learn how truly satisfying it is to help someone in need of excellent oral healthcare. As part of the planned renovation and expansion of the Lawrence J. and Anne Cable Rubenstein

Building, GSDM’s total predoctoral clinical space will increase by more than 60 percent. There will be 100 patient treatment rooms available to students in our DMD programs—each more spacious than the existing rooms and fully outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment, instruments, and technology. enriched; our faculty and staff, whose teaching will be greatly facilitated by top-line facilities and instruments; and certainly our patients, who will now be treated in surroundings commensurate with the high-quality care they receive. Why donor support matters An individual donor (or a married couple donating together) can name a patient treatment room at the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine with a gift of $25,000. GSDM students will see donors’ names on a daily basis, reminding them that today’s successful professional was once a hardworking student as well, and perhaps inspiring them to give back once they’ve achieved their own professional success. Patient treatment rooms are the hub of a GSDM education. When they bear the names of our alumni and friends, they also serve as strong ties that bind our proud community—and signal our shared commitment to delivering the very best oral healthcare, wherever we are. The renovation of the Lawrence J. and Anne Cable Rubenstein Building, now under way, will increase predoctoral clinical space by more than 60 percent.

Our students speak Students in the predoctoral program spend many hours each week caring for others in the patient treatment rooms. Here, four members of the DMD Class of 2018 speak about their experiences treating patients, and explain what improved treatment rooms will mean for students.

CHARLES LEWIS DMD 18

Lewis, an Atlanta native, attended GSDM through a US Army scholarship. To fulfill his four-year service commitment, he is now stationed in San Antonio as a military dentist. Growing up, I got picked on a lot for my teeth—they were not very straight. I did, however, have a really positive experience with an orthodontist at the time, and that did a lot for my personal confidence. Having such a positive experience at that age really fostered my interest in the profession. As a student, you can tell that the School has simply outgrown its footprint. The current shortage of treatment rooms can be frustrating, since you know that there are people who want and need treatment. A lot of them have complex treatment plans, and I wanted to see them as often as possible so I could complete their treatment before I graduated. The planned improvements will play a huge role in our ability to do more for our patients. The School’s name already carries great weight for prospective students, and having a new state-of-the-art building will increase the appeal even more. It’s in everybody’s best interest to elevate the profession by giving back. If you’re an alum and BU’s value increases, that’s a selling point for the quality of your own practice, too.

BUILDING A FUTURE

AMANDA ALON DMD 18

With degrees from GSDM, CAS, and the School of Medicine, Alon is a “Triple Terrier.” She is now a pediatric dental resident at New York University. In my first year in the Patient Treatment Center, I grew so much as a person and as a provider. Aside from kindergarten—learning how to tie my shoes—I’ve never experienced such a shift in education as this, when you go from the classroom into a space where you’re learning how to interact with people as a provider. It’s a space where we grow our technical skills as well as our interpersonal skills. It’s central to our education. For us, it’s important to have a space to learn in, but it’s just as important for the patients to have a space to feel comfortable in. We’re here for four years— we’re transient. But I’ve provided oral healthcare to people who’ve been patients here since they were kids. For them, to be comfortable means so much. I think I got more from my patients than I gave to them, so it’s important to have modern and beautiful spaces to invite them into and treat them in.

LUIS PEREZ DMD 18

Perez is pursuing a double MBA at the H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship; he also recently opened a dental clinic with his parents in Vero Beach, Florida. Through my parents, I was able to see how this profession gives you a way to live a wonderful life. Working in the Patient Treatment Center has been a dream come true. I want to be able to deliver the highest quality of care that I can possibly provide. Having modernized treatment rooms will give future students the equipment and space to be able to develop their skills. Dentistry is a field that continually pushes the envelope by mixing in more and more advanced materials and technology. The beauty of this field is that there is always an envelope to be pushed. Like Stephen E. Fienberg said: “Innovation is a process that itself requires investment.” If we want to keep pushing the profession toward new heights, it’s up to the individuals in the field to make those investments, big or small, and hopefully pave the way for newer generations.

MEGAN SULLIVAN DMD 18

Sullivan calls GSDM “an exceptional environment for learning.” She is currently a resident in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio. When I think about the new patient treatment rooms, I think about people’s first impressions. If the first impression is positive, everything else will follow. We’re already halfway there: we have the technology, we’re already able to offer patients great services—we aren’t compromising care in any way because it’s a school setting. For us to be able to take what we already have and pair it with modern treatment rooms will set us apart even more. I think BU does a great job in selecting students that have clinical and academic skills as well as people skills. You notice it going through the Patient Treatment Center: it’s a warm environment. You don’t think so much about the people skills when you’re practicing on a manikin, but when it’s a live patient—someone who might be afraid—it’s our job to make them comfortable. How can we make sure that BU continues to be one of the best providers of oral healthcare in the area? This is certainly a very good way. CAMPAIGN IMPACT REPORT 13

BUILDING A FUTURE

Work in progress As envisioned in the strategic plan developed in 2009 under the leadership of Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter, the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) is now undergoing a dramatic expansion and renovation. When complete, this project will truly transform the Lawrence J. and Anne Cable Rubenstein Building. Here’s a look at the work so far.

Work begins at the corner of East Newton and Albany streets, with an elegant roof sheltering the new patient entrance on Albany Street.

Workers remove plywood sheets to facilitate the construction of the new, more welcoming façade with its large windows.

New concrete footings provide a firm base for the completely renovated areas of the existing ground floor.

With the aid of a crane, workers inspect the striking columns that lend texture and drama to this high-traffic corner of the building.

14 CAMPAIGN IMPACT REPORT

The strong lines of the new roof draw the eye smoothly from Albany to East Newton Street, giving the building a fresh, coherent look.

BUILDING A FUTURE

Extensive interior work, including demolition, is carefully scheduled to minimize disruption to the School’s students and residents, patients, faculty, and staff.

Electrical wiring and other elements of the building’s infrastructure are being installed in full compliance with the latest standards.

The expansion of the building along East Newton Street has required demolition and clearing of part of the property.

New patient treatment areas come into focus with the installation of partition walls. New ventilation ductwork is visible at top.

When complete, the renovated entrance will turn a bright, inviting face to the surrounding Medical Campus and its Boston neighbors.

A new voice for students on the Alumni Board Stephanie Brooks, DMD 18, just graduated from the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine—and immediately decided to join the School’s Alumni Association Board. “I want to serve as both a voice and an outlet for current predoctoral students,” Brooks explains. “Dental school, although very rewarding, is incredibly demanding, and I found it invaluable to have a strong support system, which I found in classmates, upperclassmen and women, and faculty. Yet it would have been helpful to have a stronger alumni presence to turn to as well. As a board member, I feel I can be that resource for current students, while also bringing student feedback to my fellow members.”

“I want to serve as both a voice and an outlet for current predoctoral students.” Brooks, who did her undergraduate work at Franklin & Marshall College, is now a general dentist with Brooks Dental, PC (with her father, Howard Brooks DMD 87), in Winthrop, Massachusetts. While at GSDM, she volunteered at Rosie’s Place as a screener and oral health advocate and completed an externship in dental care at the Blackstone Valley Community Health Center. She is the 2018 recipient of GSDM’s Dr. Richard Forcucci Alumni Award. In a commitment to increase representation for young alumni, the GSDM Alumni Board now invites each graduating Forcucci Alumni Award recipient to join the board for a two-year term.
