KENTANG,

A glimpse into the window to our world - One of our core values is about material choices. We have been obsessed with paper and the quality of lighting, dispersed by paper. In this case, natural hand made paper made out of banana fiber.

We as human are attracted by the calming effect of repetition however perfect repetition is mundane and predictable, by weaving a little wave of disturbance to the layers of papers has added dynamic value and a signature quirk to our Kentang series.

This repetitive movement has not only helped to train our manual dexterity when we developed the collection, it calms us and put us in a zone where we can de-clutter our mind and let this repetitive technique be in the driver’s seat of this collection. This works closely with the intrinsic quality of the banana paper create an alchemy reaction, which now we identify as Ong Cen Kuang’s methodology, thus identity.

The shapes are all nods to Noguchi’s lantern curves and natures.

BUNGA KERTAS,

Nature is amazing. It intrigues and fascinates Budiman Ong. It has been more than a year since he planted white Bougainville along the perimeter of his home. His obsession has grown ever since to somehow translate this fixation into his work.

The delicate textures, the intricate and control chaos traces on the petals, the free rippling movement and all the random curves are all the qualities that he has hope to transfer to the products.

He has chosen copper wire and stainless steel wire as the media for this project and he believed that by using crochet on these wires, he can mimic the translucency and delicacy of Bunga Kertas.

AKAR BAMBU,

At one of the exhibition in Jakarta last year, an opportunity arose for Budiman to do one of his favorite activities which is factory visit. He was introduce to this malleable material made of HDPE, nontoxic and 100% recyclable. A very interesting contender to use in our lighting. It is quite apparent from the beginning that this material has distinct character, it has a memory once it has been handled, and it really is something quite remarkable.

Sometimes it took a while to seek a quality of a certain material that can be woven into the identity of a product, however, this time, just within a single journey commute back home brought up a very clear direction for this material.

When worked at John Hardy, a decade back, Budiman did development of one of a kind luxurious bangles and vases from giant bamboo roots and this whiskers like material remind him of just that. It is always wonderful to tie up positive familiarity and use it to elevate the work, then it became very clear that the name of this product has to be AKAR BAMBU.

Nothing disperses light like paper. There is an unexplainable quality that paper has that filters light brilliantly, it is soft and sensory, especially through a hand-made paper. The various natural man-made density of the paper will add to the play of light and shadow.

We are very excited with this collaboration as we have been looking for an opportunity for a while now to work with Green Banana paper man, since we found them a decade back, a local paper workshop in Bali that made paper from banana fiber.

Our mission here is to enhance the depth of the quality of light through this banana fiber, the shape is purposely keep very simple - a strong full moon.

Budiman Ong was investigating traditional way of packing with banana leaves which instigated the interesting simple yet complex shape of these pieces.

It has always been very important for him to understand the way a material would behave after it had been through a processa recipe that continue to give back.

Every piece will be slightly different as they are preciously hand crafted which is what all things should be.

This collection is also made from zipper.

Budiman Ong has created ONG CEN KUANG in May 2008 to reflect his own design principles that respect process and characters of materials. The pieces created with his dedicated team of talented craftsmen have strong character, tactile and distinct.

He was born and raised in North Sumatra, Indonesia, trained in Applied Art, attending Three Dimensional Design at Grays School of Art, concluded Graduating with Honors degree from Robert Gordon University, Scotland, UK.

After Graduating, he was designing for John Hardy, a leader in the luxury handmade jewelry and lifestyle product under the guidance of their creative director, Guy Bedarida. Budiman was leading their Special Project Department working with variety of luxurious and exciting materials and supplier throughout Asia region; China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Vietnam, Taiwan and Thailand.

Design has always been his passion and when he was trained in the UK he had limitless opportunities to explore fine art and designs. He is especially drawn to lighting because it’s the element that is irreplaceable by any other furniture items. Lighting is the one thing every house needs – it’s what completes a home.

Budiman Asian heritage fuels his inspiration and western education shapes his aesthetics and knowledge in design.
