Ilre active preservative ingredient in EnvlroSafe Plusrv is boron, an inorganic element that occurs natura[y thmughout the world. Boron has been used a.s a wood presen"ative since the 1930s for protection against rot, fungus, mold, termites, carpenter ants, wood borers, roaches, fleas, silverfish and other pests. The form ofbomn most commonly used for wood presewation is Disodium 0ctaborate Tetrahydrate (D0f). Borates are ha,mless to humans, other mamna\ and the envimnment. In fact, they are an essential mineral for all vascular plants as well as an important component of human nutrition (Wfl0, 1906). However, boratesputicularly the DOI uriety - are lethal to ineeds and other pesb. DOf does not protect by poisoning, but rather by interfering with insects' ability to metabolize food, and by casing enrymatic rcartions with tugi rendering tircm uruble to gow or reproduce. Aftpr decades of eommercial use, la.rgely in the U.S., Australia and New Zealand, the U.S. EPA, has determined that boric acid and its salts (including D0tf) show no evidence of carcinogenicity; do not break down into in€frective byproducts; and do not evaporate to negatircV afrect indoor air qudity.
