Peachland

WORLD OFCar WHEELS Show

2010's 13th annual World of wheels car show took place, or should I say took over a good part of the downtown core of Peachland B.C. With over 15,000 spectators and 550 entries it was no wonder it took me 55 minutes to find a parking spot. But that aside, the show was pretty sweet with a wide range of cars, trucks, bikes, and even boats for the viewing. If you have never been, make the trip. You won't be disappointed.

The Gearheads Wife We all know the kitchen and the location were the two top reasons I wanted this house. The hot tub was just a bonus, but in the summer, I really couldn’t have cared less. However, now that it’s cold, my aching body craves that thing. It would be so nice to just step outside of the rec room through the sliding glass doors and slip into the therapeutic hot water. Sigh...but I remember my gearhead telling me a couple months ago that the hot tub was toast. (I didn’t know what he was talking about, and didn’t bother to ask) So now, I ask if he can fix whatever was wrong. Well, it seems that he has other ideas of what to do with that space. He has been complaining about the size of his shop. It’s a single car garage, I don’t blame him. But nooooooooo way.... The glass doors are the only source of daylight in the rec room! It will be so dark if we close it in. He should extend the shop straight out the back, we don’t need TWO shops. End of discussion. A week later, I have my staff over for a meeting and show them around the house. We get to the rec room, and it’s unusually dark?! That turkey, he has a black tarp over the doors! What is he doing, trying to show me what it will look like with a solid wall there?? I roll my eyes and tell the girls that I have no idea what my crazy husband is up to. So it comes up in conversation again, but it’s not like he’ll wait for my approval to do anything. He’ll just start his modification while I’m at work and get past the point of no return, then he’ll have to get his way. Now it’s been on my mind, so I have to ask, “Was there really something wrong with the hot tub, or did you plan this?” He gives me a guilty, “No, I didn’t plan anything! The heater was gone – I told you that already.” Hmmm... Sounds a little too convenient, I don’t believe him. I’m sure he broke it on purpose so he could have an excuse to build a shop there. Seriously, I haven’t seen anything that he couldn’t fix before. Why won’t he just admit that he doesn’t want to fix it?? Avoiding the truth is still lying in my books. But I think I’ll pick a different battle, big shop = happy husband. Ha ha, and big closet = happy wife... hint hint!

Mail Bag Let me start by saying ‘’love the magazine’’ I meet you guys at the last World of Wheels show and it was good to see Build wasn’t a couple of suit wearing pencil pushers. One of you was so covered in tattoo’s it looked like a box of crayons exploded on him. Haha seriously tho, keep up the good work , love what you guys are doing. Jim T from Abby Thanks Dude, glad your liking the mag. For the record we do push a lot of pencils, its a big part of the job and there was this one time I wore a suit (for a couple of hours). As for your crayon grenade comment , wish that was true it would have been a hell of a lot cheaper. Build

The Torchman Car Club celebrated their 20th anniversary this year and threw themselves a little BBQ to celebrate. When I say little, I'm completely lying threw my teeth. 500 plus in attendance, 172 cars and trucks and Green Machine Catering that supplied enough food to feed a small country. So after a little one on one time with the meal wagon I got down to work. A big thanks to the Torchman Car Club for the invite and the Cooks for their hospitality. O ya, count me in for next year. Shop Spotlight

Build Magazine Visits, Valley Custom Rods and Collision

Valley Custom Rods & Collision is a full service hot rod fabrication, customization and restoration shop in Abbotsford BC. They may be new to the custom scene being open just under 3 years now, but owner Stuart Stobbe is a veteran to the car world. Stuart's exposure to cars began at an early age. In fact one of his first memories is riding his tricycle alone down South Fraser Way, which is now the main throughway in Abbotsford to his dads auto body shop to see what was happening. Stobbe's love of cars grew from there. Obtaining both his auto body and paint qualifications at a young age, he worked in shops honing his skills along the way to become the craftsman he is today. After owning an auto body shop for several years Stu decided to follow his passion of building classic hot rods and Valley Custom Rods appeared on the scene. So what does this shop do..... everything! Restoration, Customization, Fabrication, Painting, Pinstriping, Custom Graphics, Upholstery, Glass and Audio. Valley Custom Rods promises if they build it, you can drive it. These guys can fabricate just about anything out of aluminium or steel. Some of there work can also be scene outside the industry including a few projects for the Abbotsford School District and a prominent Chilliwack artist. While they have completed projects on some odd vehicles, bicycles, an ATV, race cars, and even a dune buggy their heart and soul rests with the restoration of that classic car or truck. Stuart and Valley Custom Rods and Collision believe any vehicle can be transformed into something special. Bring out the Hot Rod in Your Vehicle is their slogan and they live up to it. Offering three levels of paint and body work there is a price range for everyone to be able to customize their vehicle into something truly unique. So why did Valley Custom Rods add Collision to its name? While its true Stuart did get out of the auto body business to follow his love of customization, loyal customers have followed him for his craftsmanship, attention to detail and honesty. With that being said Valley Custom Rods opened its doors to collision repair with ICBC approval status on small scale. Building that classic hot rod and customization is their true focus. If you have a project and need a consultation or just want to have a look at what's going on in the shop drop by and see Stu and his team at #106-31120 Peardonville Road, Abbotsford. Maybe you have a question or need some advice, they would be happy to help you out, give them a call 604-850-2243

King of Customs&

West Coast Tattoo Show Well, where do I start? Tattoo's, bikes, custom clothing, pinups, beer, or maybe the fact that Cole Foster from Salinas Boyz Customs made the trip to good ol Canada for the show. This years king of Customs and West Coast Tattoo show presented by Trickfactory Customs and Custom Chrome took place July 9-11 at the new Langley Events Centre. Tattoo artist from as far as Japan and as close as downtown Langley were ripin it up for 3 straight days. Out back, in what we called the circus tent, was an impressive display of custom bikes built by some talented shops. Be sure to make it out to next years show, its well worth it.

Build QnA Brought to you by...

Paul B. Via email. I am trying to find out the difference between a vortec head and a cast iron head, can it be used on an old SBC motor( 1970 to 1979) I understand an aluminum head can go on a sbc as an aftermarket upgrade. Is 72 cc typical for a stock motor or is this a high performance application. I have seen heads with a rating of 64 cc that must be very high right? I want to buy some new heads for my street rod and want to make a good decision. To answer your question I’ll need more room than these cheap magazine guys will give me…. But I’ll give it a shot! First, vortec heads are available in BOTH aluminum and cast iron. There are also LOTS of GM aluminum heads that aren't 'vortec'. So, now that that’s clear as mud…………. A short history lesson

The Vortec name first appeared on 4.3L V-6 engines in 1986.Think S10 and Astro vans. These engines were the first to use a new "Vortex technology" designed to create a vortex inside the combustion chamber. Kinda like your favorite sock getting sucked down the drain of the laundry tub. The Idea behind this is to create a more even and well mixed air/fuel charge that both generates more power and is more efficient. Over the years this Vortex technology has changed and improved to develop many new changes in the GM power train division. In today's world 'Vortec' Means power and here is where the confusion starts. There are literally thousands of cylinder heads that have been made with the vortex technology since 86 and many people refer to 87 and later small block heads as 'Vortec' heads. While this is a half truth the heads that GM sells under the Vortec name and the ones everybody is buzzing about did not exist until 1996.

Oh my, you look ugly.

From the exhaust side of the head you can’t tell a vortec from any other head. They look nearly identical to all other chevy heads. The ends also look more or less the same. All the accessory holes on the outer edges look just like any other 87 and newer center bolt head. The intake bolt patter is different! It uses an 8 bolt attachment. This unique bolt pattern and the casting numbers are the quickest way to tell them apart from other heads. You also can tell by the casting mark on the end of the head since the vortec head has a 3 triangle like a bent up paper clip casting mark. They are available under 2 casting numbers 10239906 and 12558062. Both casting are good and performance wise they have no difference.

The “boom” box

The above left picture is a comparison of the 87 to date center bolt head combustion chamber and the Vortec combustion chamber. The Picture on the bottom right is a comparison of the 87 to date center bolt head and a 461 double hump head (87 head on left in picture, 461 on right). As you can see the vortec head as a smaller chamber much like the early 461’s but the spark plug is more centrally located in the in the chamber. The kidney shaped chamber promotes better combustion thus making more power. While they are ‘advertised’ with a 64 CC chamber they can vary from 64-68 CC’s in production. These heads are all produced with 1.94/1.50 valves but they can be machined to accept 2.02/1.60 valves.

The Bolt Pattern

As you can see by the picture on the left the intake bolt angle is different, 72 degrees vs. 90 degrees of earlier heads. It is also located in the upper 1/3 of the head and uses a 5/16 coarse thread instead of the usual 3/8 coarse thread of earlier heads. When these heads are bolted on an engine all 8 attachment bolts are almost strait up. You can also see by the picture on the right that it has only the outer bolts and the center bolts are no longer used. You will also notice two very ugly fingers. If you look at the bottom right of that pic you will also notice that there is no heat riser passage either but there is a indent where it would have been. With this new bolt pattern you will have to have a vortec style intake manifold!

Numbers, numbers, numbers (GM) Part # 12496820 is a low rise dual plane with EGR provision and dual carb bolt pattern. Part # 12366573 is a high rise dual plane manifold with a holley carb flange. Part # 12496822 is a high rise single plane manifold with a holley carb flange. Part # 12496821 is a Throttle Body Injection manifold with EGR. Part # 12498060 is the SDPC TPI vortec base manifold.

Hang in there, we’re almost to the end Vortec heads have excellent flow characteristics! In fact GM states that these production heads flow better than Bowtie Phase 2 Cast iron heads!!! These heads have been used in many performance applications and 400 + HP is becoming a common figure with these heads! When GM designed this head they basically took the intake and exhaust ports from the now infamous LT1 cast iron heads (the ones installed on SS Impalas) and packaged them in a standard water flow cast iron head with a new bolt pattern. GM uses a new 'Cast Port' head process that make for a very good port shape that is consistent from runner to runner and cylinder head to cylinder head. The only drawback to the head is that the stock valve springs can only attain around .425" valve lift Mostly due to the oversized guide and tall seal height. Machining the valve spring pockets for larger valve springs and reducing the seal height will allow for lifts into the .550 range. Adding screw in studs and guide plates makes these heads quite good performance pieces but it can set you back about $200. Please note that these heads use a self aligning rocker arm! If you have the screw in studs and guide plates done you will have to get new non self -aligning rockers! Since these heads have been in production since 1996 you can find more than a few sets at swap meets and even salvage yards. For you guys that want to build big bang on little cash. This may be the way to go. Just keep in mind these couple simple identifying marks and get the right head for the job.

Well Paul, I hope I answered your questions. I sure don’t know it all but I will try to confuse you enough that you think I know what I’m talking about.

Send you questions and comments to QnA@buildmagazine.ca
