Build is a FREE, localy owned and run magazine made for all automotive enthusiasts who enjoy everything there is about cars, trucks and bikes. This mag WILL NOT be full of editorial B.S. telling you whats cool, whats not, what to buy or what not to. Sure we all have our favorites, but this magazine is for the gearhead who can relate and appreciate the craftsmanship, time and energy it takes, no matter what scene he or she is into. Instead we will bring you local show coverage, shop tours, artist profiles, reader rides, how to’s, mailbag, projects, and multipule ride spotlights on a lifestyle each of us have running through our blood. Our editorial will be kept to a minimum and pictures will be plenty. Being a NON-BIASED magazine, if you don’t see what your into, send us a e-mail and we’ll cover it. Interview with Bill & Byron of West Coast Wheels & Ink

Build: Who the hell are you guys? Give our readers a little back ground history. Bill: Name's Bill, and I've been building cars for over 20 years. My dad was a mechanic and I've grown up around cars and bikes my whole life. I've been into them since I was a little kid. Eventually I got interested in building them and ended up owning my own auto parts store. From there I opened and ran my own custom car shop for 5 years. I love cars, I love bikes. Working on them, modifying them, and creating rolling works of art is where its at. Now somewhere along the line I also got into tattoos. I got one and that was it, I was hooked. Now I'm covered in them, it's like an addiction. Yah, you can throw the tats on the addiction pile. Byron: Hey, I'm Byron and I've been around motorcycles and cars ever since I can remember. My dad worked for Yamaha for 25 years, so as a kid I remember spending lots of time at the race track. I've been riding since before I was legal. My dad eventually moved from bikes to classic cars / trucks and he rebuilt a few. I however did not help him. I observed from afar. I love classic cars, particularly Porsche's, but I was more into music than messing around under the hood. My music lead me to become a professional DJ and run my own entertainment company, which I have done for the past 11 years. Oh, and tattoos? Oh Yeah... one tat on the back of my right calf: the batman symbol. Build: Who approached who about the whole West Coast Wheels & Ink concept? Byron: You know it's funny, neither one of us really did. We met a few years ago at a car show. Bill was there on site with his shop and I came up and started asking a few questions about a cool truck he was modifying. Bill: Yeah, my shop was working on a Hummer. Byron: So we started chatting about his shop and what he did and then he asked me what I did. We Got into talking about radio and that was pretty much it. We kept in touch and I occasionally stopped by his shop to say hi when I was in his area. Bill: Yeah, whenever Byron stopped by we often talked about cars, bikes, and tats...mostly mine cause he has only one. One...you call that thing on your leg a tat? Byron: It is not the size that counts...for tats. Bill:Anyways, long story short we got and idea about putting together a radio talk show that would touch on all three. With my expertise in building cars and bikes, plus my love of tattoos and Byron’s expertise in being a radio / entertainer guy, and a broadcaster, we thought we’d give it a shot. Next thing you know we pitch it to CKNW 98 and they loved the idea and picked up the show. Byron: Bill, you missed one thing...I think my tattoo helped solidify the deal with CKNW. Bill: Whatever... Build: What’s the focus of the show? Bill: Custom cars, bikes and tattoos. We want to try and raise a greater awareness of these three industries and how they much they over lap each other. Byron: We want to try and make these three topics more main stream. There has been a lot of change over the years in who gets tattoos, who owns classic cars and who are riding bikes. We want to put together a fun, entertaining show, that is educational, topical and relevant. Bill: So what exactly are you going to do then Byron? Byron: Very funny, this coming from a guy with more hair on his chin then his head.... Bill: We want to have fun with the show, bring in interesting guests and find great topics to chat about. Byron: I think that says it all. Build: When does it air? West Coast Wheels & Ink hits the CKNW 98 airwaves starting Saturday May 14th, 2011 at 6:00pm. It will be a weekly show airing every Saturday from 6:00pm to 7:00pm Build: Finally, our signature question: What would be on your tombstone? Bill: This way down. (With an arrow pointing down) Byron: Really, this is where you are putting me?

Shop Spotlight

It was this attention to detail and passion to build a high quality product that won Tim all those awards and is what is driving Hot Rod Garage to dedicate the same professionalism into every part of a hot rod build. From engine swaps, chassis buildups to fully custom interior upholstery, the Hot Rod Garage puts a great deal of pride and integrity into everything that comes into the shop. A simple look at a finished product is proof positive to the shops dedication to designing and building clean high quality vehicles is second to none. As for electronics, they are still the best in the business, capable of installing high tech products into the most technically advanced cars today. When it comes to the building and maintenance of a hot rod, most of us have a good grasp of the mechanical workings of a car. That’s why we love to own and build old cars, because they are still mechanical. However, there is one thing that always seems to stump a great majority of us, and that would be dealing with a cars electrical system. Keeping track of wires, connections, relays and fuses has led to the downfall of many of us car lovers. It is likely this incomprehension of electrical systems that also confused us when it came to the name of a popular shop in Surrey called HzEmall Customs. A cheeky play on the electrical frequency unit of Hertz (Hz), HzEmall was founded by long time, award winning installer, Tim Baillie. Like many in the business, Tim developed his passion for building hot rods and muscle cars from his father. However, unlike most of us, Tim was gifted with a good comprehension of electrical systems. As such, he entered the car audio installation industry in 1990, winning countless IASCA top awards along the way. With the opening of HzEmall, Tim was now able to add additional car modifications along with top-level audio installations. Over the last four years, the shop has been evolving into a full on one stop hot rod shop capable of building up complete hot rods. Thus with the change in business direction, the shops name also had to reflect that HzEmall wasn’t just about car audio anymore and hadn’t been for some time. And so, HzEmall is now known as Hot Rod Garage, building your hot rod and muscle car dreams with impeccable quality and professionalism. 22

How It Is... Well! Was hoping to have a few Mission street legal’s to report on but because the weather sucked we will have to wait on that. So it seems some die hard people have been heading out to the Timmy’s already....silly people! Its too cold to be going out to sit around….this is the perfect weather for the rat rods cause who cares they’re already rusty! LOL! Went to the car swap meet at White Rock and what happened? No venders and just a lot of junk….or worse. So come on people just because it’s old does not mean it’s worth anything to anyone. Not sure why we Canadians can not get our shit together. Our car culture pales in comparison to the states. They have swap meets that go on for ever and we have crap. Also, I want to put this out there for Madison…you are way hotter then that picture. And guys go to Lordco and see for yourself…Not sure what’s going to happen this year with the price of fuel and lack of work out there, but man I hope some of you guys drag out your projects that have been in the works, I’m getting so tired of same old cars and same old people saying same old things. Myself, I am hoping to hit some out of town show and shines since most of the local ones are fixed, and people out of town seem friendlier. Plus and I can’t figure it out, but I know we have hot women here but they never come out to car stuff it seems. Love wide tires, not wide asses. So I will keep this short since I have nothing to say but with the weather getting nicer, races, car shows and cruising I will have lots of opinions to come. But my prediction for the race night just before this comes out…lots of mustangs and cars that sound like sewing machines. Lots of bragging about who’s the fastest of the slow cars, maybe I will bring out my Moms car and go for bragging rights! It would be nice to see people prove or back what they say instead of the paper race…..The highlight to me on most Friday night Street legal’s at Mission, were the chicken strips…… See you at the track! 5 Dollar Dave

Build QnA Brought to you by...

A Simple Modification with Dramatic Effects Ah the body of the car, sleek, straight lines, shiny paint, an example of engineering and beauty put together. However, upon closer look at the body of a car, it may start to seem obvious that a few things just look slightly out of place. Case in point: the car door handles. While not all may object to the look of the door handles, to some, they are a serious nuisance. Thankfully, depending on your vehicle, it is entirely possible to modify your car and remove the door handles.

Normally you buy a “kit” that includes solenoids, poppers, wiring, remotes, switches…….. This can add up to a few hundred bucks easy. You notice I said “Normally.” Regular readers know we don’t operate that way around here. My latest project is a custom so of course the door handles went on EBay right away. But I wanted to try something different. I’ve always liked the stock Lincoln handles from the mid-late fifties………. They didn’t have any. They just had a small round button where the door handle would be. You pushed the button and the door popped open. If you can find these Lincoln buttons they’ll run you north of $150. Now as regular readers also know, we’re a cheap bunch. So what to do? Make my own! The first step is to remove your door handle is your interior door panel. The door handle comes off from inside the door by removing a few screws or a sliding lock plate. Pay attention to how your interior door rods operate. These rods are the mechanism that unlocks and locks your door and opens the latch. You need to take a good hard look at this to see if it’s even possible to perform this mod. Most older cars are pretty simple with just a lever to push against to “pop” the door open. I found these cool items at an office supply depot. Send your questions and comments to QnA@buildmagazine.ca

There feet for a desk. They’re made of stainless steel and cost about $1.50. I needed a tube for it to slide in.

I couldn’t find one so I got a slightly larger size, cut a section out,

welded it up and taa daa!

I had to ever so slightly enlarge the hole in the door so I could slide it in to the door.

Send your questions and comments to QnA@buildmagazine.ca

Make it flush, tack it and put the button in for a trial run.

You will no doubt have to make lots of adjustments along the way.

Mark the area to be removed from the door. A rectangular shape is the best since it will be easy to cut out a piece. In my case I only had to weld up one small round hole. Cut a piece of sheet metal to take its place. Once you've marked the shape to remove, go ahead and take a die grinder or cut off wheel, and cut it out. Take your time welding in the patch panel you’ve made!! Only a couple tack welds at a time. Let the metal cool. If you don’t you’ll warp the door! Do not leave any holes or gaps. Grind the welds down and apply filler and sand. Then you can sand and prime the door. Once you are happy with the shape of your work, you can refinish the door to match your vehicle.

If your happy with how it turned out, carry all your tools to the other side of the car and do it again on the other door…………… Send your questions and comments to QnA@buildmagazine.ca
