Build is a FREE, localy owned and run magazine made for all automotive enthusiasts who enjoy everything there is about cars, trucks and bikes. This mag WILL NOT be full of editorial B.S. telling you whats cool, whats not, what to buy or what not to. Sure we all have our favorites, but this magazine is for the gearhead who can relate and appreciate the craftsmanship, time and energy it takes, no matter what scene he or she is into. Instead we will bring you local show coverage, shop tours, artist profiles, reader rides, how to’s, mailbag, projects, and multipule ride spotlights on a lifestyle each of us have running through our blood. Our editorial will be kept to a minimum and pictures will be plenty. Being a NON-BIASED magazine, if you don’t see what your into, send us a e-mail and we’ll cover it. From all of us at Build, thanks and keep the shiny side up and the rubber out of the rubarb.

WORLD OFCar WHEELS Show The lovely Lydia DeCarllo

World of Wheels Car Show was held at the Abbotsford Tradex on Feb 26/27/28 2010. Turn out was good even though competing with the mens Olympic hockey gold medal game on the Sunday. Bo huff and his son Jr made the trip to Canada for a guest appearance and were impressed with the Canadian hospitality and for Jr, our legal drinking age. Build would like to thank the promoters of the show for putting up with us, all the participants for coming out with their rides and the band, Dick Cash for the sweet sounds.

Build QnA Brought to you by...

P.V.C…..What does it do? Do I need it? My new intake does not have a port for it, and I picked up a pair of super cool old school Corvette valve covers and they have no vent holes. Can I live without it? Oh, it’s on a 283. Brent B. Victoria P.V.C. stands for Positive Crankcase Ventilation, what does it do? it positively vents the crankcase, thereby reducing pressures in the crankcase.. do you need it? Maybe, maybe not. While the engine is running, it builds pressure in the crankcase. If the engine was totally sealed, it would start leaking from various gaskets & seals. Older engines just used breathers in valve covers, in oil fill tubes or a “road pipe” to vent the crankcase in to the air, and that worked fine. Then, mostly because of emissions, they added P.C.V.s to vent the crankcase through the intake to try to burn off some of the crankcase vapors through the combustion process. I had a 327 with “V” top valve covers. The way I did it was I went from the port on a carb base to a pcv drilled and fitted into the oil filler tube on the front of the intake. I welded in a bent piece of metal above the pcv so it wouldn't get oil poured in it when I changed oil. You can stuff a piece of insulation, a rolled up sock or your wife’s hair scrunchy down the tube (not to far!) to catch the oil vapors so they drip back down in to the crank case.

Hi Area 51, I need help in identifying a ford automatic transmission. It’s from a 1976 Mercury Cougar with factory floor shift, 351 W motor. I need to know how to tell if it’s a C4 or a C6. The shift quadrant has P-R-N-D-2-1. The engine and transmission are being used in a street rod and I need to know the transmission model to order a kick-down cable for it. Trent W. Abbotsford Trent, I always went by the transmission pan. That is the easiest way to tell. The C4 pan is slightly rectangular and has 11 bolts. The C6 is almost square with an indentation on one corner and 17 bolts. Also C4 has separate bell housing. C6 is a 1 piece unit. If it’s neither of those you have yourself a FMX unit. Hope that helps! Best of luck. Send you questions and comments to QnA@buildmagazine.ca

This year Build Magazine took part in the 2010 World of Wheels car show who brought up world renown custom car builder Bo Huff and his son Jr. With the help from a few local shops and and little time in the garage from us, the Bo Huff Pick trophy was made. Rich was the lucky winner, but do to an early flight Bo Huff was unable to present the award, but wanted Rich to know that he himself would not change a single thing to this 46 Ford Sedan. Build would like to thank Lordco machine shop in Langley for the parts, U-blast for the sandblast time, Corey at Sinister Finishes for the sick paint work and Rich for building one dope 46 Ford. The Gearheads Wife

I know it’s getting near the end (of another project) when I feel like a single mom and my husband/ roommate only makes brief appearances at dinner, then rushes back down to the shop. Twenty four- seven for the last couple weeks. I’m getting used to this. But, funny enough, it’s the same thing every time. The house rule is one project at a time, so even though he will be overjoyed with the successful completion of this car, I know there will be an empty feeling when he has to let it go to start another one. I can see how he gets attached, it’s almost like raising a child. From the moment you hold your helpless newborn and watch as they grow and develop into mini versions of you, to the first time you have to let go and stand waving at the dock while they leave for camp alone. He starts with a heap of parts, pours his heart into every unique feature, perseveres through setbacks and frustrations, and dedicates every waking minute to it’s creation. With each new ride, comes a few fights between us, but the cars are girls so they’re on my side. I have to hide a little giggle when a sharp, unfinished fender slices his arm, or something slips and gives him a bruise.“Ha Ha! You deserved that!” I think to myself. One, two, three test drives...it’s all good. Okay, I’ve been patient, so take me with you. Buckle up, here we go. OMG! Did you forget about the suspension! Apparently it’s not cool to be comfortable. Whatever, I get it, look at my shoes! After two blocks I tell him I forgot something at the house. Puzzled, he takes me home and waits while I run upstairs to double bag “the girls” and take off my dangly earrings, Now I’m ready! Feeling so proud of my gearhead on the ride to the beach, I notice all the people looking at the car that he built. On the way back, with the wind blowing in my hair, and his hand on my leg, I finally feel like all this is worth it...

Mail Bag Hey guys, sick mag you put out, nice to see a REAL local magazine showing blue collar rides. Would love to see a little info on the shows you put in the magazine, where and when they are held. Like in your latest issue you have DISASTER DAYS 09, looked cool. Love your readers rides too, miss some of the ink pics, love to see the garage builds, keep it old and keep it kool, GREAT job. TERRY from Chilliwack Thanks Terry, That is a great idea about show info and something were going to start adding into the mag. About the Artist profiles (ink pics) that will be and artical that will be alternating from issue to issue with the How-To section in the magazine. Build Went to KMS in Coq and they said they don't carry Build anymore, whats the deal? 36Hothead Well, KMS has decided not to carry Build for a few reasons. What we have been told is that they have a problem with our content, language, certain pics and even some ads have been of some concern since the beginning of our business relationship. So in the end, you will have to hit up other distributors for the mag or check it out online. Build Hey, what was up with that 70’s manikin between your booth and the guys next to you with the bikes? S.T. Hmmmmmm, Don’t know what your talking about. Next question please ha ha. Build SEND TO: mailbag@buildmagazine.ca

Ford, 5 Window Coupe Ray Bremner's 1934 5 window coupe has been an

obsession for him over the past 4 years “it's never finished” he said with his wife in the background rolling her eyes. “I'm always coming up with new ideas for the car.” Ray is the owner of Ray's Custom Body & Paint works, and this 34 is just a \ small sample of his skills. The power plant of this beast, built by Randy Murphy of Randy's Hotrods is a prime example of anarchy and precision. Bottom line, this car would horrify any suburban neighborhood with a simple turn of the key. So if your having problems with your neighbors, invite Ray and his 34 over for tea and watch the for sale signs go up.......Cheers

ROADMEN CAR CLUB

The Roadmen were originally formed in Tacoma Wa in 2004 to connect individuals with the mutual interests in traditional hot rods and customs. Since then the membership has grown to over 70 and has chapters in Vancouver, Vancouver Island, Washington, Oregon, Florida and Hawaii. Build hooked up with some of the guys from Vancouver chapter to learn more about the club and their rides. This not your average cookie cutting club, you won't hear beach boys playing from there stereos and see teddy bears on their seats. Who has a hundred grand to dump into a ride? Money is not a factor when it comes to the club, build what you can afford and drive the thing. You can check out their website at www.roadmen.com

what’s in your Garage The build of this car is different from that of other builds in that it was done by a group of locals as a gift to a friend. The proud new owner of this car had been having a streak of bad luck with the final straw being a 5 car accident on the freeway writing off the Buick she had been driving. With no funds to start a new project she had drifted a little from the low-rider scene. Adam (Acrophobiacs) decided he wanted to do something to change that for his fellow club member and with Brent in a close second they decided to start this new project. With no car and no idea where they were going to start Adam sent out an email to a list of friends. Then with the generosity of Brent and his parents, shop space was given and they had a home for the project to begin.

How it all started

Gettin under her

With a donation of a 1985 Caprice from Tyler (Acrophobiacs) they now knew what they were building just not how or who would take part. Knowing they were doing this with or without the help of others they picked a date and told everyone if they wanted to help where and when to be there. The first day of the build they had a turn out they had not expecting, with a list of people the next 6 weeks would be spent with countless hours of work going into this car. As if the thought wasn’t enough Adam then jumped on supplying wheels and tires and Brent supplied a 4 door Caprice parts car to get the job started. Everyone from car club members right down to the soon to be owners mom, Grandpa and grandma worked long days to get this car ready for the reveal and donated an enormous list of cash or parts both big and small. With each person using whatever skill they could bring to the table the car was coming along great.

When a last min problem came up and they were left with the question of who would be able to paint the car Linc & Laying some stripes Deke (Formerly of Strong CC) and a paint booth supplied by Myk Rock came to the rescue. Then add in Adam, Jerry and Deke to lace the roof and with Brad (detail) there to add a final touch of some custom pin striping they were set. www.buildmagazine.ca

Finished trunk / sub box

Finished shot from the top

Showing the massive amount of heart the local low-rider community has in BC they slaved over this project not leaving any detail missed. No matter what issue came up or what obstacle had to be overcome the group did everything they set out to do. The car was presented to Kristen at a surprise party held at Brent’s house which included even more friends and local riders. Once the transfer papers were signed and most of the crying had stopped the build journey ended in a perfect cruise!!! With no words to explain how she feels about all of this Kristen would like the world and everyone involved in this build and reveal to know that she is more grateful than can be described and loves each and every one of you for everything you did even if it was just yelling surprise as that garage door opened.
