AMixed-use STUDY towers

Designing for multiple users and uses is often challenging but ultimately rewarding for the urban setting. It provides more social cohesion and opportunities for activity while creating efficiencies within a community. With towers becoming more frequent within dense urban locations tower design has started to embody this concept across the globe, something BUJ supports and have developed ourselves.

Reducing the building footprint and maximising the ground plane to provide new public external spaces.

To support this design typology BUJ have an ongoing research project within the practice to understand the mix of uses; how they interact; and when they are most successful. This type of design research provides an excellent knowledge base for future works and ultimately allows the practice to deliver a better building.

The Isle of Dogs, and Canary Wharf, is best known for being one of the financial centres of the world. It is one of the few areas in London that allows high rise towers and has provided many opportunities for iconic buildings, most famously No.1 Canada Square. The isle is now fast becoming a highly active and vibrant neighbourhood, where the typical financial services are married with malls, restaurants & housing. This new mix of uses has not only allowed BUJ to provide many exciting schemes in the area, but to develop our skills and knowledge of designing and delivering dense, tall, and most importantly; successful buildings.

BUJ are among the first architecture practices to embrace the use of animation as a planning and design tool. 2d drawings, and even 3d models, often fail to communicate the essence of architectural proposals. By utilising motion graphics we are able to make worlds in which clients can see and experience their proposals. Film as a medium within architectural design is being used more and more and is celebrated for its ability to provide the immersion which a static image often fails to.

industrial estate

Creating a model for a new 21st century lifestyle with a strong sense of place.

Westminster Industrial Estate centred around the implementation of yards and squares which aimed to promote a strong sense of place, promote neighbourliness, respect the sites heritage and allow for re-use and innovation. The success of the scheme was predicated upon a considered approach to the interaction and support of an extended creative community and a new residential community that nurture a local complexity of character born from its location, creating a model for a new 21st century lifestyle with a strong sense of place and a uniquely desirable identity.
