CONTENTS Well first things first lets welcome back our returning students to the joys of exams, essays, and diving headfirst into that overdraft. Plus many of you, like myself, will have that dreaded dissertation to tackle, oh and not forgetting the beautiful hangovers in those gruelling 9 o’ clock lectures! The boredom of the summer has been taken over by sheer excitement of getting back into the swing of things. I really can’t wait!

Editor’s note

Also a big hello to our freshers…Welcome to the University of Lincoln! I know when I first started University I got sick of hearing the usual one liners - “have fun but be careful”, “you’ll love it here”, and my favourite “you’ll be fine”. Yeah, you’re not the one that’s miles from home having to do your own cooking, cleaning AND washing! Pffft!

GOT NEWS?

Employment of new university graduates decreases. Overall employment of new university graduates has fallen by 17 percent this year. Worrying numbers of University graduates and young people with fewer qualifications are struggling to find employment, creating a ‘lost generation’ of 16-24 year olds surviving on benefits. The number of young people on Job Seekers Allowance benefits is expected to reach 1 million by next year. The Government is investing £1 billion in apprenticeships to help those with less qualification improve their skills and hopefully gain employment. The money is also being spent on creating 200,000 employment opportunities for 19-24 year olds, helping those with A Level qualifications and University graduates. According to The Graduate Market 2009, a study of graduate vacancies and starting salaries; graduate vacancies have fallen this year, however there are signs of improvement. The study, which covers companies such as Microsoft, HSBC, the BBC, and Marks and Spencer, shows that half the companies surveyed expect to maintain their 2009 recruitment levels in 2010, and a quarter of the companies expect to increase their employment rates in 2010. However, University Student’s graduation plans are changing to coincide with the ‘big job slump’. Many of those who are due to graduate in the next few years are planning to continue at University to study a Masters degree or apply for a teacher training course, simply to add more qualifications to their CV, whilst waiting for employment levels to improve.

The University of Lincoln offers help to graduate students looking for job vacancies, CV help and careers information and guidance. The opportunities@lincoln service specialises in finding graduates a job that their course has trained them for. For more information visit their website www.ulcareers.co.uk or email them at Opportunities@lincoln.ac.uk. If you’re finding oit hard to find a job this year why not go along to the University Jobshop. From September the Student Job Shop will be operational from the SU SOAP Centre. The Student Job Shop is the place to go if you are looking for any type of employment whilst studying. We advertise all job opportunities, provide advice relevant to part time and vacation employment and point you in the direction for Careers advice and information.

his smooth In this interview we get to speak to our new SU President. With why the see to easy its r humou of sense witty demeanor, polite manor and with him iew interv an called we So, us. ent repres student body voted for him to about learn and him know to get and uced so that you freshers can be introd his new ideas and policies.

Please explain why you wanted to become President of the Students’ Union? I felt that as a Union we weren’t representing the vast majority of students, I was involved in the Union from the magazine side of things for three years, and I never felt that the Union offered me any sort of support or benefit, and that it missed out a lot of students. It just annoyed me that the Union didn’t seem to be communicating with students. That’s really the main reason. What qualities do you think a President needs to have? The President needs to be very much a people person, the same as any officer role. You need to be very open minded and strategic in your vision, as well as a good communicator. You also need to be able to manage a very heavy workload. There are things that I’ve had to take on this year that I would never have thought would come under the responsibility of President, but there’s a wider spectrum, you have to consider so much. You have to be a representative of the students, but you are also a liaison of the University. There are so many different aspects, but you need to be able to manage it.

8 final.indd 8

How do you hope to improve on the performance of last year’s SU team? What policies did you base your candidacy on? My manifesto was founded on the development of University services, so things like the development of the accommodation accreditation scheme, which has a preview in September. As well as the building of the University shop, expanding the library facilities, more access to electronic journals and resources, and also the development of the student council. Basically it was founded on the development of the way in which the Union represents and communicates with students. What big changes can we see coming to the Students’ Union this year? You’ll start to see a lot of physical changes this year regarding the Student Centre. We’ve developed our office space so that it’s more student orientated. Students are aware of the services and activities that we offer a lot more than in previous years. In terms of what we’re offering this year we are working largely on better representing the students, ensuring that the Student Council is fully up and running as it represents a large amount of students. Overall the key thing that we’re going to be working on is ensuring that every student is represented and above all listened to.

Based on the performance of last year’s team, I want to develop by talking to students. I can do my job better by talking and interacting with students. I have always got time for them, regardless of if I’ve got a hundred meetings in my calendar the students are my priority, and I will move heaven and earth to ensure that if a student needs help, that it’s delivered. The students will be the priority this year. Some students last year complained about the poor visibility of the Students’ Union. Is anything being done about that this year? Yes, there are a lot of things we’ve been developing on that front. We’ve formed our Ulsu facebook accounts, and that has proven to be a massive communication tool. Having said that I would rather talk face to face with students. I want students to know my face because I’ve been and talked to them, regardless of what campus they’re on or what course they do. When I did my campaign I was out there from 7.30 in the morning until 4.30 at night talking to students.

Let’s talk about the election campaign, what was the superman costume all about?

Chinese or Indian?

The campaign elections were based on the question of “are you an SU super hero?” and no-one had played on that fact. Being a PR student I quickly decided to play on that title, so when I ran I said that I would wear the costume. I thought that the costume would help students to recognise me and get attention.

Was there a lot of rivalry between the candidates? Not at all really. All of the candidates that ran in the elections were a close knit community. We had a lot of support from other candidates, but obviously we didn’t get to spend a lot of time together because we were always either out campaigning or talking to students. It was really good because everyone got on well. What ethos did you base your campaign on? Talking to students. That is the essence of what my job is. After all, how can I represent someone if I haven’t talked to them? I am a firm believer in ensuring that we’ve spoken to students before we do anything as a Union, regardless of how big or how small the decision is. Student input is a massive part of my job, I would hate to think that I was a President who didn’t speak to students, because then I wouldn’t be doing my job.

SU officer interviews (Full Time Officers) Emma Devine VP Communications and Media Please explain more about your role within the Students’ Union? I am here to encourage participation and involvement within the Students’ Union. Across all campuses, I also manage the content of the website; I also collate content for all the university publications such as the handbook, and other things like that. I am also the managing editor of Bullet, so I proof read it and make sure that it is giving out a continuous message. I basically am in everybody else’s business! The other officers let me know what’s going on in each department, and it is my job to shout about it. I’m also responsible for the Media Crew and the Media Centre. What made you want to get involved within the Students’ Union? I’ve been a member of the Students’ Union for three years, like every student is, I’ve been active in the Union for every year Chris Farrel VP Sports and Teams Please explain more about your role within the Students’ Union? I am the new sports and teams officer for the Students’ Union. My role is to develop, enhance and improve University sport and sporting opportunities. It involves liaising with sports clubs and teams and helping them reach their potential both on and off the pitch. This includes better coaching, better finances and increase in member and participation rates. As well as aiming to improve the university sport in the British University sport Rankings my job also involves increasing events coverage and providing activities and opportunities for those less interested in competing for the University, but are still here to have fun.

that I was at University, I was a member of a society for two years and then I was a part time officer in my third year. This is a fantastic experience for me in terms of starting my career, and if I can help people get involved in the Students’ Union along the way then that’s fantastic! What big changes can students expect from the SU this year? The website is being completely redeveloped, which is going to be happening during August. So we’re literally scrapping all of it and starting again; because I know that students often comment on how unfriendly to the user it is. We also want to increase the level of knowledge and awareness about the Students’ Union for the average student. How do you hope to improve the performance of last year’s SU officers? I think it was a good team last year, however I think that the amount of knowledge the average student had about the Students’ Union was very limited, and that is one of the things that the whole team is intending on improving. This year has got a fantastic team on board; we all really want the same things, so this year things can only get better!

What big changes can students expect from the SU this year? I feel that the students will see a lot of change. With the University being so small but growing rapidly it has had to delay what potentially it can do for the last few years. From being in the role already I feel from a sports and societies view point that this year could be potentially a very good one. The office has rebranded from Athletic Union to students union sports and societies. There are also lots of surprises in store which should be a positive to move sports and activities in the University forwards.

How do you hope to improve the performance of last year’s SU officers? My previous officer did a fantastic job for this University. Unfortunately this wasn’t noticed by everyone as he started a lot of the background work that is developing the sports and societies office brilliantly. I hope to continue his work from where he left off but also improve what could have been better. These include more communication with the teams, better links with the sports What made you want to get involved and exercise science faculty and sports within the Students’ Union? centre with regards to more coaching As the previous President of the University opportunities and usage for training. I aim rowing club and also a sport development to increase events, make presidents more and coaching student I wanted to bring my aware of their job role, better procedures knowledge and expertise into the Students’ to overcome last year’s problems such as Union. The University had never had a referee payments. I hope to increase better sport student as the sports and teams links with Kit Locker, more events to occur officer and also never had a smaller club and obviously make sure we improve both background within the role. This seemed on and off the pitch for the University. to be a key factor for me to be involved. I wanted to develop all clubs together and not individually which had been a big issue over the past few years by others within the role.

What course were you studying at the University? I did BA (Hons) Advertising and Public Relations What is the best piece of advice you could give to a new student? My biggest piece of advice is to be active and open within the Uni. Just get involved with as much as you can. Go to the Fresher’s Fayre and the Sports and Societies Fayre, sign up for things, try new things. You’ll meet new people and you’ll make not only your student experience but your student life so much more valued by doing that. I really got involved with things and here I am now with a full-time job within the Students’ Union Where do you see yourself in ten years time? Ideally working in London for a PR company Chinese or Indian takeaway? Chinese Chocolate or Vanilla ice-cream? Vanilla Favourite food? Sausage and mash!

What course were you studying at the University? BSC (Hons) Sport Development and Coaching What is the best piece of advice you could give to a new student? From my experience I feel that new students should make sure they get to know there housemates, get involved in as much as they can during freshers’ week, choose a sport that they like as your Wednesday afternoons will brilliant and just enjoy your time here. It is scary at first but if you knuckle down and go out to make things good, it will be. Where do you see yourself in ten years time? At the moment my focus is to stay within sport. As a keen rower I have an interest to be involved within the amateur rowing association and work within their coaching department. However every year will come at a time for me. 10 years seems too far away. Or that’s what I think. Chinese or Indian takeaway? Indian takeaway. Always a soft spot for hot food. Chocolate or Vanilla ice-cream? Vanilla but Ben and Jerry’s seem to ruin this question. Favourite food? People who know me well will laugh. But the basic student diet. PASTA.

Kayleigh Turner VP Education and Academic: Please explain more about your role within the Students’ Union? Basically Education is one of the broadest roles, I look after everything to do with your academic career so the National Student Survey and feedback, appeals, academic offences, complaints about the University, HE and FE funding, student support (with Welfare), feedback and assessments, postgraduates...the list is endless. What made you want to get involved within the Students’ Union? Initially I didn’t know much about what the Union did except for the Sports & Societies, but I started

talking to the Officers who were there in my third year and decided it was definitely something I wanted to get involved with because there were things that I really wanted to change. What big changes can students expect from the SU this year? I think this year the Students’ Union is really working hard on inclusion and letting as many people as possible know what we’re doing. We did a lot of good work last year but we just never shout about what we’ve done, so this year personally I’ll be making a lot of noise telling people when we manage to win on an issue, and even when we just hold a great event or get lots of students involved. Last year we managed to secure a 24h library pilot, improved internet at Riseholme and a new Course Rep system but we never really told anyone what we’d achieved. How do you hope to improve the performance of last year’s SU officers? Well I am one of last year’s officers, I was re-elected. Ideally I’d like to just carry on the changes that I started to make last year

Kayleigh Valentine What made you want to get involved within the Students’ Union? Stephen Greaves VP Welfare and Liaison: Please explain more about your role within the Students’ Union? As VP Welfare & Liaison, I represent the students on all welfare related issues such as housing and accommodation to sexual health and hate crime. I also run campaigns on various issues such as sexual health, community involvement, personal safety and healthy living. Really anything that affects student life. I am also involved in actively encouraging participation from diverse and underrepresented groups of the student body. The liaison side of my roll involves me being lead officer for all satellite campuses (Hull, Holbeach, Riseholme and Cathedral). Alongside campus liaison, I also act as community liaison officer. This involves building links within the local community and working

including the new course rep structure and some more work with the postgraduate community in making them feel more involved. What course were you studying at the University? I studied Criminology and graduated last year What is the best piece of advice you could give to a new student? Get involved as much as you can, meet loads of new people in fresher’s week and you’ll be set up with friends for life. Try and do as much as you can in the first few days because you only get to be a fresher once! But also top tips are vitamins, lots of water and introductory lectures! Where do you see yourself in ten years time? In ten years, I’d like to have an MA in Political Communication, be teaching in a really nice school, living in London and surrounded by my best friends.

Within my role, I feel that I have had good foundations laid out for me and I only hope to let the role grow and become more established. I would like to work closely with the societies and help them raise more money and also try and put some more activities on in semester B. What course were you studying at the University? I was studying Media, Culture and Communications. What is the best piece of advice you could give to a new student? Get stuck in and try and enjoy every moment, it will be over before you know it. DVD Adventureland Released 11/09/09 From the director of Superbad comes this hilarious comedy set in 1987. Firstly, I should tell anyone expecting comedy of Superbad proportions will be disappointed. In contrast to its slapstick, visual comedy, Adventureland instead offers a sleek, intellectual comedy which is more like a ‘coming of age’ romance. James (Jesse Eisenberg) is excited about his graduation present from his parents, a trip around Europe. But when his dad is demoted, he must find his own way to pay for the trip. This film is about working in the worst possible place, for little money, and having a great time. It is extremely funny in parts, and many of the actors bring their own comedic traits to each performance including the love interest, Em (Kirsten Stuart, New Moon) who has a unconventional relationship with the married maintenance guy (Ryan Reynolds, The Proposal)

I Love You, Beth Cooper Released 21/09/09

Heroes Season 3

To be honest this film is what I expected, stupid jokes that don’t really even get a laugh, sitting in the cinema you look around to see who is laughing. The answer? No-one! The only reason I even watched this film was the wonderfully gorgeous Hayden Panettiere - the only person in the movie who can act. Fresh from the Heroes set as Claire, the cheerleader who can‘t die, Hayden completely holds the film and makes it just about bearable. The direction is shoddy and not inventive at all. The main male actor is new and certainly nothing special. This is definitely one to miss. If you still really want to watch this film, I suggest you save yourself an hour and a half and a ticket price and watch the trailer. The filmmakers have put the 3 or 4 funny-ish (not funniest, FUNNY-ISH) scenes into it, and so you will get the same experience.

Terrorism, time travel, and identity theft are just some of the themes that occur within the latest season of American Show ‘Heroes’. Season 3, was under a lot of pressure from fans and critics to overcome the lacklustre season that was volume 2. Plot devices such as the reinstatement of Sylar’s powers at the end of season 2 provided the writers with a much more interesting set of storylines for the serial killer. Along with the introduction of major characters such as Pa Petrelli and Agent Denko, the writers decision to dispose of unpopular characters, meant that ‘Heroes’ Season 3 could introduce a new set of characters that would inject a much needed boost in interesting plots. The biggest and most consistent improvement from season 2 has to be the storylines involving Sylar/ Gabriel Grey, often dramatic, humorous, shocking and sad, Star Trek actor Zachery Quinto makes ‘Heroes’ Season 3 many of the reasons why fans of Season 1 should give ‘Heroes’ a second chance.ting 9/10

Released 12th October

Welcome back everyone! And a big hello to the 2009 Fresher’s! Well, What a summer! Amazing TV, great blockbusters and remarkable holiday reads, as well as great weather made it a truly awesome summer! As well as catching every ray of sun possible, the whole nation was talking about Big Brother, over 2 million people tuned in as Sree, Marcus, Siavash and eventually ex boyfriend Isaac swooned over Noirin, Halfwit showed us his wild side and gave us his best ‘Bob DeNiro- Taxi Driver’ Impression and Charlie and Rodriguez let their sparks fly (usually ending in a huge fight!) As well as the 10th Big Brother, there was also entertainment from Eastenders, as it came out that Syed Masood (played by new square hottie Marc Elliott was homosexual. This heartwarming storyline called attention to the fact that Muslim men may be scared to come out because of their religion. The, ironically named, Christian fell for Syed, however in order to quell his feelings Syed announced his engagement to the innocent Amira. This conflict between faith and feelings brings more depth to Eastenders, as it isn’t just another ‘affair’ or trivial relationship issue. Coronation Street was equally as addictive this summer with the controversial relationship between Maria Connor and Tony Gordon. This is one of those storylines that the nation loves: ‘because, Tony hated Liam coz Liam was having an affair with his wife, Karla. Then Maria lost her baby. And Tony killed Liam and then Maria found out she was pregnant again with her late husbands baby and then Tony and Maria have started going out!’ It is amazingly confusing, and keeps us gripped to the TV! Of course the huge TV event for Sci-Fi fans was the amazing Supernatural. Season Four saw Dean being brought back from hell with no memory or scars, and even stranger he had acquired an angel as a side kick. Some of the funniest episodes of the series can be found in this season, underneath a fantastic storyline. Fans were cut short of many of their favourite programmes last year due to the writers strikes It has now be confirmed it’s final season by their network in America, the WB, working out perfectly for the creator Eric Kripke as he originally planned for five seasons. It has also been rumoured he may be doing a sixth, both of the boys are contracted for 6 seasons, but some fans believe it wouldn’t be right for the show, as five were planned and you cant really getter a bigger ‘big bad’ then Lucifer (the devil)

Summer always brings out the blockbusters, this year we had the long awaited Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince and the graphic novel-adaptation Watchmen. The huge summer hit was Star Trek, Starring Zachary Quinto (Sylar in Heroes) and Simon Pegg (of Hot Fuzz, and highly anticipated Paul), because of the huge fan base for the previous films and TV series, many fans had huge expectations, it had to be unique and new for the younger generation of fans but also had to respect its predecessors. It did so, excellently! Everyone loves to take a book on holiday and sit beside the pool and this summer was no exception, a BIG seller was Dawn Frenchs’ Dear Fatty, a poignant book, written as a series of letters to people who have touched her life, including her father who killed himself when Dawn was 19. These letters tell him what he has missed in her life, her marriage to Lenny Henry and the adoption of her child Billie, through them you see her life from an interesting perspective and feel exactly what she is feeling. Give it a read! So that’s my round up of entertainment during the summer. Any queries or question just drop me a line – bulletmagazine@lincoln.ac.uk

LINCOLN COMEDY FESTIVAL Most people when writing an article about a comedy festival would begin by employing a tacky cliché such as telling an archaic and ultimately un-amusing joke to win you over. Luckily, I’m no different. Why did the horse cross the road? Now you have to read this article if you want to find out the punch line. After last year’s success of the first ever Lincoln Comedy Festival, it returns to the city with more acts, more dates and more chances to see fantastic A- list acts without the huge price tag. The 14 shows will be held between The Engine Shed and the Drill Hall. The brilliant Stuart Lee headlines at the Engine Shed on the 6th October. Most recently seen on Stuart Lee’s Comedy Vehicle his credits also include being the co-writer of controversial Jerry Springer the Musical and voted the 41st Best Comedian of all time by Channel 4. He was recently described by Ricky Gervais as “The funniest, most cliché-free comedian on the circuit”.

Lee’s style is incredible and eloquent. He is ruthless in his deconstruction of British pop culture: “You can read Russell Brand’s autobiography and dismiss it as rubbish if you like. Or you can dismiss it as rubbish without reading it to save time”. If you enjoy incredibly witty, smart and well constructed jokes this is an act you’ll definitely want to see. It would be easy to focus on the wellestablished acts visiting Lincoln at the beginning of October, however that would neglect the genuinely fantastic acts you may not be aware of. The Peacock and Gamble show (Sat 3rd) is a great act: featuring the incredibly popular comedy veteran Ray Peacock and Revels Student Comedy Awards finalist Ed Gamble. I caught up with Ray Peacock to discuss the festival:

Do you enjoy playing to a Lincoln audience? RP: I do actually. It is horrible that the Uni gig doesn’t really run so much anymore as the students there were always highly regarded in comedy circles. Is it exciting to be playing a comedy festival still in its infancy unlike well established festivals, such as Edinburgh? RP: Totally, and again, I think the standard of shows/acts that are coming to the Lincoln Comedy Festival speak volumes for the esteem that the organisers and Lincoln audiences are held in by the comedy community. What can we expect from your show? RP: It will be Ed going on the stage and doing a try of comedy and then when that has all gone wrong I will go on the stage and rescue the gig by doing a better comedy and we will all forgive Ed in the end.

-

Peacock and Gamble will be performing on one of the two “Suck it and See” days (3rd and 4th) being held at the Engine Shed. You can download the duo’s podcast for free either off iTunes or Chortle.co.uk to get a sneak preview of what to expect from this brilliant double act. Each day has several comedy shows including Josie Long’s, Pappy’s Fun Club’s and Gary Delaney’s latest tours. There are fantastic deals available for the “Suck it and See” weekend as well. If you buy tickets for two shows (priced between £5 and £7) you get the third for free. Or if you feel you want to truly gain a Fringestyle experience you can purchase a day ticket for £25 and see the headline act of the day for free (Tickets are now available from the Engine Shed). I could continue to talk about the festival and each of its brilliant acts in detail informing you of every aspect of what to expect, however I believe you should go and discover this Smörgåsbord of entertainment for yourself.

“the standard of shows/acts that are coming to the Lincoln Comedy Festival speak volumes for the esteem that the organisers and Lincoln audiences are held in by the comedy community”

Community Volunteering at the University of Lincoln Whether your University experience is just beginning or if you are in your final year Community Volunteering could be just what you are looking for. Going to University is all about trying new things and taking on new challenges and volunteering is the perfect way of making friends and settling into your new surroundings. Through Community Volunteers you can gain lots of valuable experience that can help you immensely with your degree and your future career plus not to mention the variety of people that you would get to meet and all the fun and incredible experiences that you would have. Plus volunteering is a really good way of giving back to the local community in Lincoln and to help out with causes that you feel passionate about. In addition to this as the recent economic climate is showing us there are fewer jobs for students during term time and after we graduate as well, but instead of admitting defeat and sitting around moaning about it why not do something worthwhile and volunteer. Plus not only does volunteering benefit other people in the community it can also benefit you in the long run by improving your employability. In fact as the Students’ Union website reveals a survey by the National Volunteering Charity Timebank, shows that out of 200 of the UK’s leading businesses;

73% of employers would employ candidates with volunteering experience over one who doesn’t. 94% of employers believe that volunteering can add to skills. 94% of employers who volunteered to learn new skills had benefited either by getting their first job, improving their salary, or being promoted.

art and education to law and criminal justice and all of them are desperately seeking much needed help; these range from, Macmillan Cancer relief and Age Concern to Guide Dogs for the Blind and The Lincolnshire Police force, plus The National Autistic Society and Lincoln Women’s Aid to name just a few. So why not take up this amazing opportunity and donate some of your time to a valuable cause which offers as much back to you in return. For instance if you want to go into teaching and are struggling for to put on your CV volunteering is the perfect way to fill this gap, for example why not volunteer at the local Brownies or in a local school or if you are a budding environmentalist why not help out at the Lincoln Conservation Group to gain some knowledge about your area of interest. Also if you fancy volunteering during your summer break the Community Volunteers Team can help you get in contact with numerous overseas volunteering schemes for example People First International India which helps run projects such as village education and health clinics. So if you are too busy during term time there are still plenty of opportunities for you to get involved.

freshers fas S.O.S

Hi, I am pretty useless when it comes to knowing what ‘on trend’ styles will suit me when I go shopping for a night out. Now I’m at University I know I will be going out a lot more. Can you help me with what trends are most flattering for my curvy figure? Yes, sometimes it is quite daunting when out shopping; you are being told what’s in and fashionable and it can be difficult choosing trends which flatter your own figure. There are lots of styles for party wear this autumn, with some more extreme than others, you just have to discover what suits you best, whether its cutting edge, or stylishly safe! It’s all about metallic shimmer at the moment, silver, gold, sequins, and sparkles. Floral patterns that swept the high street all summer are now being over taken by geometric prints and bold silhouettes. However, when choosing the look of your outfit, the right shape and design is crucial, when it comes to flattering your own figure. With curvier shapes, balancing your overall shape is the key. Styles that accentuate shoulders and hips but cinch in your waist will produce a gorgeous hour glass figure. Wrap style dresses do this effectively, as do tulip and bubble skirts. Also think about what your best assets are. If you have lovely long legs, but you don’t like to show off your top half, then try the long sleeve mini dresses that are huge at the moment. Alternatively if you are a little wary of showing much leg then go for the dressed up style of jumpsuit, as it will fall in all the right places! When choosing clothes, it’s really just about what makes you feel confident. Wearing an outfit that is ill fitting, will show as you won’t feel at your best! Just remember to not fall into the usual traps, and think first before you buy into the next crazy fashion fad.

mas, with Im here to answer some of your fashion dilem related! this issue dedicated to all things freshers

Hi I have just started University and I’m looking to be a bit more adventurous with what I wear, do you know of any good online fashion shops, as I’m bored of the high street, and want to find a more unique look?

I am a fresher at University this year, I don’t have much cash left after paying my rent and I’m pretty poor now! Do you have any tips on where to buy cheap clothes and accessories that are still fashionable?

Online shopping can be a great alternative to the usual British high street, you can find some truly unique buys, that will make you stand out from the crowd at Uni.

I know how you feel! Being a student for the first time can be hard, especially on your wallet. When it comes to picking up bargains, the first place to look is the local charity shops. I have found some amazing pieces for a few quid, you are sure to find a unique buy too. If you didn’t fancy venturing out the door however, then Oxfam.co.uk now have an online shop with all their best donations, including cheap designer and vintage pieces.

Along with the usual sites, such as ebay. co.uk, asos.com, and oli.com, there are some lesser known online shops for both men and women.

For unique women’s party wear try boohoo. com, axparis.com, and rarefashion.co.uk. The range and prices of the outfits on their sites are wide and usually exactly on trend. Prices can start from £5 on boohoo.com for a fantastic dress, so they are well worth a look!

For casual pieces laredoute.co.uk is a French catalogue, which may not sound all that exciting, but they usually have the chicest and classic looks for a fraction of the price on the high street. Motelrocks.com is also good for day wear, and for the designer lovers out there. When looking for menswear, try sites like standout.net, and uniqlo.co.uk for casual basics with a twist. For unique and kooky buys, then lazyoaf.co.uk has some cool t shirt and sweat shirt designs. If you are looking for vintage clothes, then etsy.com is a vintage buyers market. Also marthascloset.co.uk and rokit.co.uk have some great retro pieces for both sexes.

If you were looking to be even more imaginative then take a look at what you already have sitting in the back of your wardrobe. You can totally transform even the oldest of purchases with buttons, fabric dye, trims and design transfers. Just pop to a haberdashery shop and let the creative juices flow! There are also some interesting ideas online for swapping clothes rather than buying. Try taking a look at whatsmineisyours.com, and covertcandy.co.uk for an alternative approach to updating your wardrobe.

There are so many more sites out there if you look hard enough, try looking at fashion blogs too, as they usually have plenty of links to their favourite sites!

MUSIC WELCOME to the Music

Section of Bullet! This issue is focused primarily on providing all the necessary information on Lincoln’s music scene and what is up-and-coming at venues in the surrounding area, including the University of Lincoln’s very own Engine Shed. The upcoming issues shall also be rammed with interviews with artists big and small, local and global. In the next few months interviews should be carried out and published with many of the acts performing such as; Dizzee Rascal, Bloc Party and Gary Moore as well as critical reviews of performances. So watch out! I myself am a musician, and do not place myself as a journalist in any shape of form, I am a man on a mission to develop the local music scene. After two years of performing around the area, as well as attending local gigs, I have seen a struggling music community without much defining character or diversity outside of the common TopShop Indie types. However I’ve seen some absolutely phenomenal acts around Lincoln, and the potential really is there. It is up to us, as a collective musical movement to change this and make it our own. Together we can forge a solid basis in which any artist, of any background or genre, can give it their best shot and ultimately, turn some heads. Many of you will be Freshers, looking to start up a band as well as meeting fellow musicians around the community, many of you will also be re-enrolling students interested in the musical community or you may already be involved with it, if so, drop me a link so I can do what I can to help. We need to help each other, no matter what musical path you wish to tread or are already walking on. We need to act as a whole.

THE ENGINE SHED Now occupying the former space of the rail-side locomotive sheds, the Engine Shed music venue opened in the summer of 2006 with Britpop rockers Embrace playing the opening night. Since then, the likes of Pigeon Detectives, Kings of Leon, Dirty Pretty Things, Fratellis, Deftones, Dizzee Rascal and many more have graced the stage, firmly establishing The Engine Shed as Lincoln’s highest-profile music venue. With a capacity of approximately 1600, the Engine Shed is also the largest-capacity venue in Lincoln and is hosting the following high-profile acts this year:

FORMING THE BAND

by Billy Lunn from The Subways

I decided, with a new found cognitive ability and love for rock, to form a band. It felt only right to include my brother in this adventure. We had no idea how we were going to form this band until I heard “Supersonic” by Oasis. That was the moment I turned to my mum and said “Mum, I have to learn to play the guitar…” Soon I found myself playing a ratty old acoustic guitar that one of my Nan’s lodgers had left behind after fleeing without paying the rent. It had only four rusted strings when it was handed to me, but soon it was fully stringed and tightly tuned and I could begin to play the songs I loved.

After maybe a year or so we’d made six EP’s, each with three songs on, and had sent them out to London promotors. Our first London gig was at The Buffalo Bar in Highbury/Islington. It was also the venue where we met our manager who, after three songs, ran up to the stage from behind the sound desk and begged to manage us. From that point onwards we played at least three or four shows in London a week – and all of this whilst Charlotte was taking her A-levels at school and Josh and I were working at a hotel as linen collectors during the day. We began developing a regular crowd that eventually formed into a fan-base.

Oasis. I heard “Supersonic” by rned That was the moment I tu I have to my mum and said “Mum, r…” to learn to play the guita Shortly afterwards, Josh came across Nirvana and then Smashing Pumpkins and decided that drumming was what he wanted to do and before long we were making a racket together, as things were always done with us, on our newly acquired instruments. At the time I’d started seeing a girl I’d met called Charlotte Cooper. Now and then, when she’d come round the house to see me, she’d have to sit through at least half an hour of Josh and I jamming and so in order to quash her boredom we decided to let her join in. We had a four string bass lying around and soon she’d taught herself Nirvana’s “About A Girl”. Not long after that we began writing songs for ourselves.

I’d spent a little of my very small stash of cash from work to set up a website and a forum where all our fans could talk and meet, and where we could also meet the people who were enjoying the demos and the live shows. Then it got more serious. And then we got a phonecall… The full, unedited and uncut phenomenal article by Billy Lunn can be found on the website at; www.bulletonline.org

Our first ever gig was at The Square in Harlow and to this day it remains a very important place to us. Our gig consisted of six covers and six original songs (that were utter rip-offs of the covers we were playing that same night) and it was probably one of the worst performances The Square’s legendary walls had ever seen. Though The Square became a continual source of support and encouragement we soon found ourselves recording demos there. Eventually we bought a cheap recording unit and some microphones and, using the experience we had gained from the wonderful people who helped record our demos, began making demo CD’s of our own.

INTERVIEW JACK STRAW DANCING LOTUS I recently met up with Jack Shaw, front man to local group; Dancing Lotus, an original sounding group of Lincoln University graduates whom achieved significant attention from media, record labels and public alike with their original sound and dedication to music during and after their time at Lincoln University.

start a band or musical project, just like you and I did. What advice as a successful musician can you give to these aspiring musical first years? JS: If you want to get something to do with music out of somewhere, then go out and gig. There is plenty for people to do to make it their scene, for example if you are someone like me then I go

Jack, your band Dancing Lotus started off and formed at Lincoln University, can you just say how you got started off? JS: Well basically I came down to Uni, a week after Fresher’s week my funds were running low as my loan wasn’t in, so I decided to go out busking in town and made £20 or £30 and thought “this isn’t a bad city for music!” then I started jamming with my house mates and formed what was the original Dancing Lotus. Then in my second year I met up with Joe Mac (guitarist) and Nick Long (violinist) and through Nick we met Woody (bassist). After a year of jamming around I met up with Weird Productions, who produce a lot of HipHop/Rap sort of stuff, and met Lanre (MC) who asked me to feature on one of their songs and that’s how we all got to know each other. After a while we formed as a full band and from then on started putting out albums playing more gigs.

There will be many students here that will be looking into doing a whole range of different types of musical involvement or creation. I’m very aware that this alone is intimidating let alone starting out in a new city and trying to get involved with all types of different music genres. Any experience you can hand out?

busking and people notice you, leading to being asked to gig as well as there being loads of Open Mic Nights and if you want to perform as a band then the best thing you can do is wait until you meet someone, even on your course and if you love music then you’ll naturally fit in circles that are filled with similar minded people. Just jam around and don’t be afraid, just take things as they come. If you want to set up a band then Lincoln is such a great place for it because it’s such a small community, you’ll soon get introduced to people who are doing the same thing you are.

JS:The great thing is with Lincoln is, especially with the amount of students here, people are susceptible to new music. There is the Mix Introducing on BBC Radio Lincolnshire broadcast every Friday night from seven to nine that have new acts come on and play four songs, then have a chat with you about your music. They’ve had music ranging from rock to grime on there. Just don’t be afraid to be different because ultimately if it’s what you love doing then you should do it. For the full interview please go to www.bulletonline.org

LN2 Acoustic Nights

Jolly Brewer Open Mic

Blues at Tap and Spile

Why not start your week of music lightly with a taste of Lincoln’s bustling live acoustic acts? In the heart of Lincoln’s city centre, LN2 is within easy reach of the University Campus. With quite a small live area, it is particularly suited to acoustic music, with the small stage giving what is a large, bustling bar, a small pubesque atmosphere. However, with adequate in-house PA, you can be sure that the music will reach you wherever you perch, giving you the best of both worlds.

Hosted by Bob Cairns, the Jolly Brewer is host to Lincoln’s toptier Open Mic night. With acts ranging from Jazz to Rock, this Open Mic night has a selection to satisfy most tastes, hosting a very friendly, cosy atmosphere which welcomes performers and spectators alike with its ethos of great, original music. All acts are sewn together with Bob’s very own interlude of folksy blues. If you enjoy the welcoming atmosphere, then why not take part? Whether you’re a seasoned professional or are just looking for somewhere to get your harmonious handiwork heard, head down to the Jolly Brewer on a Wednesday night.

Horse and Groom Live Music

Duke of Wellington Rock Night

The Horse and Groom sits almost next to the University Campus it has recently started hosting live music with the aim of promoting local music talent. With a welcoming atmosphere and an emphasis on music, the Horse and Groom even has an annual music festival called ‘Groomfest’!

The Tap and Spile pub is well-known for its blues-based live music, and is located just between the High Street and the beautiful Uphill area of Lincoln. The Landlord and Landlady, Terry and Caroline, are extremely passionate about live music. Quaint and full of character, it’s the perfect setting for Lincoln’s often unsung blues musicians to get your weekend off to a jive!

As the previous home of Lincoln’s legendary Bivouac music night, the Duke of Wellington has become one of Lincoln’s most well known live venues for alternative music. If it’s Rock or Metal you’re after, head down to the Duke of Wellington for a night of vigour and volume!

SCY Rock Night SCY is now the home of The Bivouac, which formerly resided within the Duke of Wellington. Having previously been host to artists such as British Sea Power, The Killers and Biffy Clyro, The Bivouac has an enviable reputation for putting on fantastic nights of live music in Lincoln. SCY has always been the promotion of a fresh live music scene within Lincoln. You won’t be disappointed!

SPORT

SPORTS & SOCIETIES IN LINCOLN You’ve arrived at Uni, probably got a bit too drunk on your first night. Don’t remember anything and have a heavy Engine Shed fuelled hangover? Well nothing beats a hangover like sweating it out, so it may well be the perfect opportunity to start thinking about trying out for one of Lincoln’s numerous and eclectic sport teams or societies, not only can they help sweat a hangover but give a welcome and refreshing break from all that hard studying I’m sure you will all be doing. It doesn’t matter whether you fancy trying something new or you’re an experienced pro, there

luckily here at Lincoln you have the Tower Bar. Here you can catch all the live sport your heart desires on the big screen. Starting on the Sunday that kicks off Fresher’s weeks with two huge games in the Premiership, starting at 1:30 Megabucks Manchester City team will be trying to prove that they are the biggest club in Manchester these days in the Manchester derby, followed by the London duel between the early pace setters Tottenham and Chelsea at 4.00. This could be the perfect way to break the ice with some fellow supporters, then toast your victory together or (hopefully not!) drown your sorrows.

Its ridiculously easy to get involved... literally is something for everyone, from the expected sports such as Football and Rugby to the more diverse, yet equally as excited sports such as Ultimate Frisbee and Futsal. It’s ridiculously easy to get involved; just head down to the Sports and Societies office in the SOAP centre and you’ll be able to see what there is that takes your fancy. There will also be the yearly Sports and Societies Fayre, taking place on the Wednesday of fresher’s week between 10AM and 4PM at the Engine Shed. This is the would be cattle market where all the clubs/societies will be competing for your signature, it’s also where you’ll be able to find out more info on all the available teams and societies including the dates and times for trial days and what some of the more obscure sports consist of. If you can’t make it to this then just have a quick look on the Sports and Societies’ website at www.lincolnsu.com.Also here is a guide to everything you need to know about the teams at Lincoln. (Helpfully placed in alphabetical order, for those with a sore head) Getting involved in these teams isn’t your only passport to sport in Lincoln. All sports fans want to watch sport as well as play it;

No matter what your sport is, if it’s on TV pop down to the Tower Bar and you should be able to catch it and there is so much to catch this year. The big one is obviously the kick off of the football season, whether your team is in the premiership or the conference you can’t help but be excited when it all kicks off. Its not only club football either, all the home nations are striving to reach the World Cup next year. There’s a brand new Rugby Union and League Season. England will be hoping to push on from their Ashes victory with their series against South Africa. The Commonwealth games are next year. The super bowl is always popular in Lincoln, especially with our American Football team, so keep an eye out for a super bowl event. Andy Murray will be hoping to put his Wimbledon disappointment behind him and win his first major. The Ryder Cup is back in Britain as we try and win the famous trophy back. All in all it’s a good year to start Uni!

SUMMER IS OFFICIALLY OVER ! Summer is officially over, and it has been quite a summer in the world of British sport. The weather may have been absolutely garbage one day then amazing the following day, but that doesn’t compare to how up and down our sportsmen’s various efforts have been. Let’s start with the bad.

know, letting a 3 goal lead be clawed back by hosts Sweden, only to shock horror! Break their penalty curse and progress to the final, where Germany awaited. But England buckled and they were then thrashed 4-0 by Germany.

The British Lions also failed in their elusive search for a series win, this time in South Africa. It all began brightly with an unbeaten record in all the Lions warm up games. But it was the tests where the teams’ fate would be decided. The First test was the epitome of a game of two It all began on a balmy night in Rome, halves with The Lions trailing heavily in in the early days of summer. When the the first half, only to mount a remarkable champions of the English football teams; turnaround and be whiskers away from Manchester United played the champions victory. The second test was lost in the of Spain, Barcelona. It was billed as a clash tightest of margins with The Lions losing of the two best teams in the world, a clash the series in the final kick of the game. between the two best leagues in the world. Some pride was regained in the final test Well the evidence on show was pretty with their first test victory in eight years. damning. So the 73 year wait for a England comfortably progress to the semis. British winner still goes on. In the semis England seemed much more But it hasn’t all been doom and gloom. The like the England we successes of our British sportsmen, like a hot day have made us partially forget about all the failures, none more so than our fabulous victory in the recent Ashes series. It is only the Anglo- Germanic rivalry which can come close to the relationship we have with the Aussies and in a fantastic series we sent them back to Australia “urnless”. It may be the smallest trophy in

world of sport but it is possibly one of the most significant. It was fitting that like the last Ashes Victory in 2005, it all came down to one day. England had to bowl out Australia to win; it was a simple as that. The rest as they say is history. English drivers have also come to the forefront of the Formula one world. Jenson Button has raced (excuse the pun) his way to the top of the drivers’ championship with his new car and showed the class it was always thought that he had. With all of Button’s success it is easy to forget that the current world champion of Formula one is still Lewis Hamilton, and it looks like his fight back is beginning starting with his maiden victory of the campaign in Hungary and followed by a runner up spot in the European Grand prix. While no British Cyclists came first at the Tour De France it was certainly a mammoth year for the Brits there. Mark Cavendish, who is regarded as the fastest sprinter in the world, had a fantastic tour in 2008. Cavendish won 4 stages of the race which until then had never been done by any other British cyclist. However he went 2 better winning 6 stages and narrowly missing out on the green jersey, only missing it after being disqualified in a stage. Bradley Wiggins who is better known for winning Olympic medals also had a fantastic tour; he unexpectedly conquered the mountains and came into the final few days with a chance of a podium finish. Unfortunately he couldn’t amass a podium but he still equalled the British record for highest finish in the tour. There were so many other triumphs for British sport, Amir Khan powered his way to a world title, Tom Daley is a world champion diver at the age of 15, the England women’s cricket team won the women’s Ashes and the senior England team are a win away from the World Cup. It is hard to judge whether it has been a successful summer of sport with it being so mixed, but any feeling of disappointment we ever got was soon washed away be it by new misguided hope or genuine glory. It may have been a mixed summer, but then this is Britain, would we have it any other way?

SUPPOR T... “THE IMPS!” Now that you’ve relocated to Lincoln from all over the country, many of you won’t be able to go see your beloved football team in the flesh that often, especially if you are a fan of one of the premiership teams. While it’s ok watching your team on TV nothing beats the atmosphere of actually being there at the stadium. Well luckily for you Lincoln City Football Club is on your doorstep waiting to be adopted as your second team.

mixed summer losing star player Danny N’Guessan to Leicester City but signing former Manchester United trainee Chris Fagan. Realistically Lincoln City will probably be aiming at mid table and they should possess enough quality to avoid relegation but a play off push may be too much to ask for. They have made a fairly average start to the new season with two wins from four games, but it is still early days.

Lincoln City or ‘The Imps’ celebrated their 125th Birthday this year. They may not be as big as the clubs other university towns can boast of, but The Imps are a decent footballing side that boast a fantastic atmosphere at Sincil Bank. This

is mainly because of the small group of fans known as ‘The Passionistas.’ Who are amongst the loudest fans in the football league. They possess one of the finest youth academies in the lower leagues, with graduates including Jack Hobbs who was sold to Liverpool and Scott Loach who is the Watford first choice goalkeeper and also played for England in the final of the Under-21 European Championships this summer. In a slightly darker light Lincoln are the not so proud holders of a rather strange record; no team has played more seasons in the Football League without reaching the top league than Lincoln City. The record stands at 102 years this season.

thousand people and other than hosting The Imps has hosted a strange array of famous names from The Who, The Kinks, Westlife to other ‘famous’ stars such as Lee Ryan (that annoying bloke from Blue) and Andy Scott Lee. (No? Me neither!) Tickets cost between £9 and £12 for us students and season tickets cost between £185 and £220. You can even purchase a replica shirt in the club shop to show your support for your new local side.

The Imps finished in a respectable 13th last season and were nine points off the play-off spots, a feat they did achieve in successive seasons between 2003 and 2007, including three successive losing trips to the Millennium stadium for the League 2 play-off finals. They have had a
