Hello again,

What’s On

It’s been a busy few weeks around the University with lots to do and plenty going on. Just how we like it! Bullet have once again been working hard to deliver this (penultimate!) issue and we hope you enjoy it.

I know it’s that time of year when the work load sets in and some of us are trying to get that dissertation over and done with! I’m in the same boat; I’ve traded my nights on the town for my beloved computer and a pile of books. Joy. BUT, here are my thoughts - as frustrated as we might be with our essays, revision, and other things that mean we can’t hit the Engine Shed on a Wednesday night, remember this - when it’s done we’re one step closer to summer, and this means R&R, holidays, sunbathing, festivals, and barbeques! MONEY MATTERS –

THE STUDENT VEN‘DEBT’A

Students and academics were present at the university’s Reginald Shore took a far more aggressive stance LPAC centre on Thursday 11th of February to quiz local towards his parliamentary opponents. He instantly slated the Labour party for imposing funding cuts that would politicians at a higher education debate. “handicap the future,” and said that their policies do not The debate, jointly organised by the University of Lincoln bare scrutiny. and Bishops Grosseteste students’ unions, was part of the “Student Ven’debt’a” campaign against government He then assaulted the Tories policies by saying that “they have one rule for the rich and others for the poor.” proposals to increase university tuition fees. He highlighted that the main focus of Liberal Democrats would be education and that they would scrap tuition fees as they have in Scotland. He said that this approach was crucial to a fair, free and open society.”

Each of Lincoln’s prospective parliamentary candidates were invited to sit on the panel; Lincoln’s current Labour MP Gillian Merron, Karl McCartney for the Conservative party and Reginald Shore for the Liberal Democrats.

Opening speeches were read out by each candidate The floor was then opened to questions from the audience outlining their party’s policies and their own views on which sparked a surprise speech from Lincolns English Democrat’s candidate. He addressed the audience higher education funding. and described the evening as a “Higher education lack Karl McCartney was first to address the audience. He of funding debate.” When asked to direct a question he criticised Labour’s education efforts saying that the ignored the request continuing to condemn each panel Government’s independent review should have taken member’s policies and received hearty applause from the audience. place much earlier. The questioning then continued and each panel member was barraged by a variety of topics including STEM research funding and ‘the pricing out’ of the lower classes. NUS Vice-President Aaron Porter criticised each candidate and their respective policies and even went so far as to question their integrity as parliamentary candidates. Tuition fees in Britain currently stand at £3,225 per year leaving students with an average debt of £20,000. A recent report from Universities UK suggests that students would owe over £26,000 if the cap on funding was raised to £5000 per year or £32,000 if the cap were raised to He outlined Conservative policy with an ’entry to all’ stance £7000 a year and made it clear that, if elected, they would remove the cap on the number of people allowed to attend university. The NUS believe that the current university funding scheme should be overturned and president Wes Streeting said He said he wants to see students getting value for money that the debate is a step in the right direction: “Students and that a holistic stance should be taken towards in Lincoln are making it clear to their politicians that if they university applications. refuse to speak out against raising the cap on tuition fees, we will hit them where it hurts – at the ballot box.” Gillian Merron then followed defending Labour’s policy. She said that the government’s independent review should not be pre-empted and admitted that the current system was not perfect but that it was fairer than it used to be. She continued by saying that universities would have have to do their bit in the economic recovery of the country. She said: “Universities will have to tighten their belts... expectations are high, but Lincoln is more than equipped to deal with it.” She added that the Labour Government has invested over £100 million in the University of Lincoln alone since 1997. 4

£15,000 for graduates who retrain as a children’s social worker.

Bullet Point News. A man from Nottinghamshire has been evicted from his flat for playing Girls Aloud and Cheryl Cole songs throughout the night.

Under a new government scheme, graduate students will be paid to study for a masters degree in Child Social Work.

Martin Bramwell, 22, played songs constantly, often until 4am. One neighbour even went to stay with a friend to get away from the noise.

The ‘Step Up to Social Work’ scheme has been developed to attract more people to the profession, as there has been a decrease in the amount of newly recruited social workers since high profile child neglect cases in the media. The death of Baby Peter in 2007, despite visits from social workers, doctors, and police, has been one of many cases put under the spotlight. A government review found that six out of ten councils had reported problems holding on to staff recently.

The local council even installed noise monitoring machines in the flat, which they presented at court. A new material made from recycled plastics is said to be the building block for the ‘house of the future’ Recycled rubbish including old TV sets make a sustainable material that is seven times stronger than the traditional breeze blocks used to build modern houses. Four tonnes of recycled waste are used in every building; some even use as much as eighteen tonnes. It is seen to be a revolutionary way of using the growing amount of recyclable waste in Britain, and will create thousands of jobs.

Therefore the government are keen to attract ‘high prospect’ graduates to the profession. Graduates must have achieved at least 2:1 degree and have had some experience working with children to apply for the scheme.

Thermo poly-rock has been funded by the government and was first developed in Swansea.

The East Midlands is one of the eight areas in England that is taking part in the scheme.

The 10 Billionth track has been sold on ITunes online.

£15,000 will be provided for each candidate who wants to retrain, however it will be up to each local authority to decide how the money will be spent.

‘Guess things that happen that way’ by Johnny Cash was the 10 billionth track to be sold by the biggest legal online music store.

Other local authority groups taking part are Yorkshire and Humberside, Coventry and Warwickshire, Norfolk, and Cambridgeshire, amongst others.

A $10,000 (£6,500) ITunes gift card was given to Louie Sulcer from Georgia, USA who bought the 10 billionth song. The top 25 most downloaded songs were also revealed. Black Eyed Peas song ‘I Gotta Feeling’ was the sites most downloaded track, whilst the bands single ‘Boom Boom Pow’ was the third most downloaded song. Lady Ga Ga appeared three times in the chart, and Katy Perry and Rhianna had two tracks each in the top 25. 5 4

SU elections interviews Jennine Fox: Sports Officer-

The past two weeks have seen the university awash with all sorts of election propaganda. In fact, it became a real challenge to make it from one end of the Main Admin Building to the other without being accosted by one candidate or another. But when the results were finally announced Bullet managed to catch up with the winning candidates as they were celebrating on results night. So here they are then, the first glimpse at your 2010/11 Students Union team!

Again Jennine was running unopposed for this position, gaining 838 out of a total of 977 votes cast. She gained popularity through her manifesto, which focused on being dedicated to the existing sports teams at the university, whilst simultaneously helping to create new sports fixtures, and encouraging more students to get involved. Jennine was unavailable for comment on results night. Joe Hicks: Campaigns Officer“I’m a bit overwhelmed at the moment to be honest.” Those are the words of a triumphant Joe Hicks, who was elected with 590 of the total 925 votes cast, beating rival candidate Declan Ackroyd, who received 221 votes. “My main focus for next year will be developing the campaigns team,” Hicks says “But also finding out what students want to campaign for so that we can get them involved.”

Jonathan Holmes: Liberation OfficerHolmes was running unopposed for this position, with the only other option being to re-open nominations for other candidates. Still, Holmes managed to secure 722 out of 866 votes cast. “Next year I’ll get to work with all the different groups,” Holmes said excitedly “I want to be as involved with those groups as I am with the LGBT at the moment.”

Hicks says that his time acting as a student officer this year was his main inspiration for running for the campaigns position, saying “I realised that there was a lack of communication with students, and the campaigns officer role is the active part of representation, and if we can get that linked directly to what students want, then that’ll come a long way in helping communication with students. Hicks also revealed that he and Ackroyd got on very well during the campaign, with each agreeing to incorporate the losing candidate into their campaign team. Hicks also said that whilst he was overall impressed by the campaigns that have been going on this year, he thinks that they could have been “executed a little more professionally.”

Jonathan admits that the campaign for him was difficult, since he has no previous experience of elections, being a first year student. He admits that he underestimated the importance of posters and banners during the elections. But he seems to know exactly what he needs to do next year. “It’s all about getting these minority groups heard,” he says “I want to work with those groups that at the moment aren’t very active and make them as active as the other minority groups like the ACS and the LGBT.” Phil Krstic: Fundraising and RAG Officer-

Dan Derricott: VP Academic Affairs-

Phil Krstic was again running unopposed for this part time position, managing to secure 778 out of a total of 895 votes cast. Krstic has won favour with many students thanks to his enthusiasm for the job and ideas for student fundraising. I asked him what he was looking forward to about his new position. “Being given the opportunity to make people get involved with [fundraising] and also setting up a good RAG society. But apart from that I’m also looking forward to working with the rest of the SU team on all the other projects next year.”

194 votes were all that separated Dan Derricott and Ellie Marchant-Williams on results night, with Derricott eventually winning with 613 votes over MarchantWilliams’ 419. “I’m looking forward to turning the role into something different,” said Derricott “I’ve achieved a lot this year and I’ve managed to live up to quite a big manifesto.” When asked about the campaign Derricott said “it was long and different to last year because then I was only going for a part time position. It was something new and definitely pretty crazy, there’s been many long days especially this week.”

We then talked about the campaign, and Phil pointed out that even though candidates for part time positions weren’t obligated to attend all of the Hustings events, he still went to the majority. When I asked what his big plans were for next year, he replied “first things first, we have to get a really good RAG society going. Making sure people get involved and getting people interested, we have to have a really good team spirit atmosphere for fundraising.” 6

“Seeing how [the role] has been done over the past couple of years, seeing what can really be done with the position and also my involvement this year, it’s kind of a natural route into that position. Initially I didn’t think that I was entitled to run for it but I realized that it would be a good next step, and who knows what will happen after it.”

We’ve completely overhauled the union with the new officers. It’s all about benefits for students.”

Kayleigh Taylor: VP WelfareKayleigh Taylor gained 618 votes, winning the election over rival candidate Emily Gough, who received 437 votes. I asked what she was looking forward to most about her new position. “Working with the rest of the new officers that have been elected,” she said “I think that next year is going to be a really good year and a really successful one.” Kayleigh said that she found the past two weeks campaigning both exciting and daunting, but was quick to thank her campaign team for their help. I talked to Kayleigh about her plans for next year, and what she was most looking forward to changing from her new position. “I’d like to work with the diverse groups to create a voice for them.” She replied, saying that she especially wants to focus on student accommodation, which at the moment she feels is not adequate.

When asked what points from his lengthy manifesto would be first on his list to work on, he replied “Part time employability and student finance. We need to really drive that through to make sure that there is appropriate funding for students and that they have the money they need.”

Andreas Zacharia

Andreas Zacharia: VP ActivitiesThanks to his eye-catching banners and large Facebook group, Andreas Zacharia was always the favorite for this job. He won with 703 of the total 1356 votes cast, beating rival candidates Katie Blackburn and Kathryn Walker, who received 250 and 385 votes respectively. “I love the University of Lincoln,” He says, just minutes after being announced as the winner “I intend on standing up for it and making people proud to be from Lincoln. I want to speak to students, find out what they want doing, and then doing it for them.” The main focus of Zacharia’s campaign was the “three wishes” for students. He says that the first thing he wants to do is get out and speak to students to find out what their three wishes are. He said that “I want to take Lincoln up to the level of other big universities, supporting both societies and students.” On the performance of Chris Farrell, this year’s Sports and Teams Officer, Andreas said “I’m good friends with Chris; he represented the [societies] very well. Chris Charnley: SU PresidentChris Charnley was re-elected as SU president with a majority vote of 783 votes. His opponent, Lucy Alborough, gained 494 votes. “[The SU President] is a different role this year,” Charnley said just moments after being announced as the winner “I know that communication is a massive issue within the union and I feel that being a PR student and knowing how to communicate, and particularly having spent two weeks separated and really looking at the union from the outside, has given me so much insight. It’s not about communicating with students through Facebook and emails, it’s about meeting them face to face, and that’s what I’ll be driving forward next year.” I asked Chris what big changes we can expect to see taking place in the Students’ Union this year. “It’s not a year about change,” Charnley replies “It’s about continuing with the development we’ve done this year. 7 4

Results Night Round-up for the 2010/11 Students’ Union Election. So after reading the Winner’s Comments here is a quick roundup of Election Night for those of you that weren’t there:

out between present part time SU officer Dan Derricott and third year student Ellie MerchantWilliams, with Derricott coming out on top with a respectable 613 votes. In his acceptance speech he thanked the staff at the SU for all their support and all the people on his campaigns team that helped him over the campaign weeks.

The results kicked off on the 5th of March just after 9pm with current Welfare Officer Steven Greaves hosting the event. The Tower bar had an amazing atmosphere which was helped by the venue being packed out with numerous supporters that all turned out to cheer on their favourite candidates, this was a pleasant surprise as the actual number of votes cast came nowhere near to representing the massive student body that we have here at the University of Lincoln. The first results to be announced were the winners of the Part Time SU officer positions. In three of the cases there was only one candidate running for the position, however a certain threshold had to be reached for the candidate to be successful.

The second position to be announced was Vice-President for Welfare and Diversity, which attracted a lot of support with the audience at the Tower Bar. This place was again contested by a current part time officer at the SU Emily Gough but this time the position was taken instead by a non part time officer Kayleigh Taylor, who said that she was really excited to have the job and roll on next year. The last Vice-President result to be announced was the position for Activities which was the most contested position with three people running for the job but with his countless poster campaigns and catchy slogans Andreas Zacharia won the position with a large majority of the votes cast and in his acceptance speech he reiterated that he intends to stick firmly to his manifesto to help all students at Lincoln.

The first position announced was Liberation Officer and this was filled by Jonathan Holmes and the number of votes that he received carried him safely through the threshold. The second uncontested position to be revealed was that of the ‘RAG’ Officer and Phil Krstic took the job with a huge majority of votes and in his speech he said that he wants to make next year’s RAG the best ever! The next position to be announced was that of the Sports Officer which was once again uncontested, but Jennine Fox like Jonathan and Phil before her gained the majority of votes to see her safely into the job.

The last position to be announced was arguably the most anticipated, with the results of the race for the top job the SU President. There were originally four people campaigning for the job but two of these dropped out of the race early on in the campaign, so on results night it was between only two contestants, the current SU President Chris Charnley and third year student Lucy Alborough. The position was won with 700 plus votes in Charnley’s favour and as a result the current President was re-elected for another year in the job, and in his acceptance speech he said that he was really looking forward to next year and that the 2010/11 elections had been an epic success.

The last of the part time roles to be announced was the only position to have more than one candidate running and this was the position of the Campaigns Officer which ended in Joe Hicks beating his competition with an impressive 590 votes. After the part-time officer’s results had been rounded up the much awaited positions for the three full time Vice-President Officer Roles were at last announced.

Bullet Magazine would like to congratulate all the winners and wish them good luck for the next academic year.

The first result to be revealed was for VicePresident for Academic Affairs which was fought

Uganda: Kill the gays and all their friends too Touch my shoulder once? Sorry, bub – you’re committing an offence.

AND YOU DIDN’T REPORT IT?! Girl, you dead. There are a million scenarios like this, all with the same outcome. This abuse of power to condemn homosexuals is completely absurd. We’re people, no different to anyone else. We deserve rights.

Touch it twice? YOU WILL DIE. This isn’t a threat, but a legal certainty. If you live in Uganda that is.

I fail to understand how such ancient prejudices can still permeate the modern world. To say we’re meant to be an advanced species, some of us are about as astute as an aubergine.

Confused? This is called ‘aggravated homosexuality’ and is part of the AntiHomosexuality Bill proposed by the Ugandan government. The bill demonises all homosexual acts and makes them severely punishable by law.

“It’s crazy – almost everything results in death.”

We can fight this. Help block his barbaric blight if we just use a little common sense.

Lobby your MP, sign the online petition, and get your voices heard. Watch out for the University of Lincoln’s LGBT Society, who’ll be petitioning the bill around campus.

It’s crazy – almost everything results in death. Touching another person of the same sex, letting a gay friend use your house, even not reporting someone who’s known to be gay to the authorities all class as being a crime.

You find out more about contesting the AntiHomosexuality Bill online at www.officeronline.co.uk. Just search ‘Uganda’.

So, let’s play a game (not that one! Put it away!)

Did you like Jamie’s blog? Well, his prose does pack a punch!

We’re in Uganda, and you read this piece.

You can follow his personal blog at www.degreesofdreaming.blospot.com

You read the bit where it says: “I’m gay. Men excite me.” You plonk it in your bag and carry on with your business. But then, you’ve not reported this to the authorities? Uh-oh. That’s a caution right there. One more offence and you die. Hang on, you talked to your gay friend about the article? 9 4

LGBT: GAY TO STAY We talk exclusively to University of Lincoln LGBT Society about those posters, drawing a giant rainbow across campus and why neon is so now.

people everywhere celebrate sexual freedom, cultural pluralism and societal acceptance.

You may not have heard of LGBT History Month. That’s ok, it’s still relatively new. But although it’s only in its sixth year, it’s already seeing in some big changes.

February is a lot of things; it’s not all about the pancakes. While those tasty little morsels might melt in your mouth, nothing tastes quite as sweet as actively striving for change.

“Homophobia is a form of hate, and we hate homophobia.”

Terrible puns aside, February is becoming an increasingly important time. As well as hosting Valentines and Groundhog Day (don’t get me started on that damn film), it’s also LGBT History Month, when lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender

All month the University of Lincoln’s LGBT society have been scurrying around like happy little beavers (can I say that?) in an effort to promote a message of social inclusion and diversity. You can’t have failed to see those graphic posters plastered around campus, declaring the incontestable ethos ‘Homophobia Hurts’. We decided to kick off LGBT Month with a bang and deal with one of the most controversial aspects

10

By half past ten we’d already reached full capacity; I was stood outside with the President of the SU and other Student’s Union candidates waiting to be let into our own event! But it was worth the wait to see such a number of people celebrating their sexuality and loving every minute of it. People were especially entranced by our neon timeline, detailing the historical struggles encountered by famous LGBTs. February’s been frantic, so I think I speak for the entire society when I say it’s time for a wellearned break. of life as a gay, lesbian or transgender person: homophobia. While it’s true that Lincoln is very tolerant of gay culture, the threat of homophobia is ever-present, regardless of your location. The recent Anti-Homophobia Bill of Uganda is evidence enough of that.

Jamie Hogue Transgender Representative for the LGBT Society

“Homophobia is a form of hate, and we hate homophobia.” Chris Hughes, Vice-President of the UL LGBT Society

Press Officer for the LGBT Committee

We wanted the poster campaign to highlight the bigger issue of homophobic abuse and show that we are people too. Yes, it was very graphic, but it also showed the potential physical and mental scarring that homophobia can cause. And come on, we know it’s sometimes hard to grab your attention. A boring old rag saying ‘LGBT History Month’ would have been the visual equivalent of whispering in the middle of a crowded bar. And that won’t get you served, will it? As well as the posters, we’ve been working hard on finding other ways to engage students and get people talking about LGBT History Month. If you walked past the Main Admin Building last week you’ll have seen us scribbling away on the floor with oversized pieces of chalk. No, that wasn’t graffiti, but our 2010 Rainbow Chalk-a-thon. And despite fighting yet another form of adversity (this time, however, it was only the weather), it was hugely successful. We had staff, students and even some young children helping us out. So, whether you came to help us spread our message of cultural acceptance, or just play around with chalk, it was a great day by all accounts. The most exciting endeavour of the month, though, had to be our Rainbow Rave. Arranged at local gay venue Christopher’s, our UV party saw off LGBT Month in style. Luminous, disorientating style.

PLAGIARISM FEATURE

BE AWARE OF THE RISKS AND DON’T DO IT!

The University of Lincoln saw 24 students plagiarising in the academic year 2008/2009 compared to 16 in the previous year. It’s that time of year when the work load is sky high, stress is kicking in and the idea of discretely copying a bit of text seems tempting. With all the work and distractions, you might even not realise you’re doing it. Bullet got in touch with Paul Walsh, Chair of Academic Offences Committee at the University of Lincoln, to get more information and advice on plagiarism.

you’re in your last year at uni, you could for-fit your degree. Paul explains that the investigation of an allegation will be prompt. Once an allegation has been referred to him, he informs the committee as quickly as possible and they will meet frequently to consider the verdict. Lecturers marking work can access ‘plagiarismdetecting’ software, which can quickly match text from an assignment with anything that has been previously published. Googling a string of six or What is classed as plagiarising? seven words can usually locate their original source. And of course, the academic staff are experts in If you pass off the work of someone else’s thoughts, their subject and can easily spot when another ideas, writings or images as your own then you’re author’s words or ideas are being copied. plagiarising. When you think about the efforts you would have to go through if you got caught plagiarising, you have to ask yourself, is it really worth the risk? I found a student who in an attempt to help their friends, ended up being accused of plagiarism and failed a module. They believe had they not failed the module, their final grade of 2:2 could have been a 2:1. This is his story: “I was in my second year at university and there was a 2,000 word essay that everyone had to do. A couple of my friends asked me if I could help them. I feel stupid for saying this but I gave them a couple hundred words of what I’d written, just to give them an idea of what I had done. The ironic thing is I didn’t give them the whole thing, because I didn’t want them to copy me!

I went straight to my lecturer and that’s when I found out. The people I gave parts of my work to had used it as their own, word for word, a straight copy and paste job. At first I thought how could they be so stupid as to copy my work exactly, when it was being marked by the same lecturer?! Then I thought how could I be so naive to give it to them in the first place?

I genuinely just wanted to help them out but I ended up failing the module for it. One of the guys that copied my work had plagiarised before and the other one owned up to copying my work, so I was I got a phone call from my Mum one day telling accepted as the one who hadn’t copied. But I was me I had a letter from the university. Naturally I just as bad as them, because I provided them with told her to open it, because I thought it would be the source and I shouldn’t have. important. To my horror, my own Mum was reading out the words ‘plagiarised’ and ‘leave the course’, If you need help with your work, then ask you I couldn’t believe it. I was in shock and so scared lecturer or your tutors for help. Don’t take the easy at the idea of having to leave university. Most of way out and don’t be naive enough to give someone all I was confused, because I was certain I hadn’t the temptation to take the easy way out either. It’s copied anyone. just not worth it.”

“ONE OF THE GUYS THAT COPIED MY WORK HAD PLAGIARISED BEFORE”

A QUICK ROUND UP OF THE MAIN ACADEMIC OFFENCES The following are examples of academic offences in respect of assessment: (i) Collusion: A student colludes when he or she submits work for assessment done in collaboration with another person as entirely his or her own work, or collaborates with another student to complete work which is submitted as that other student’s work. Collusion does not apply in the case of the submission of group projects, or assessments that are intended to be produced collaboratively. (ii) Misleading material: Inclusion of data which has been invented or obtained by unfair means or an academic offence; or re-submission in whole or in part, without proper acknowledgement, of any work by the student for which credit has already been claimed as part of the same or another award.

(iii) Plagiarism: Plagiarism is the passing off of another person’s thoughts, ideas, writings or images as one’s own. A student commits plagiarism when she/he incorporates in his or her own work substantial unacknowledged portions of another person’s material, or attempts to pass off such work as original through its inclusion. In this context, substantial means more than trivial or minimal. Examples of plagiarism can be found on page 17. (iv) Cheating: Any irregular behaviour during examinations such as the unauthorised possession of notes; the copying of another candidate’s work; the use of programmable calculators and other equipment when this has been forbidden; the unauthorised obtaining of examination papers.

Whats On - March/April: CINEMA

Alice in Wonderland- 5th March Controversy has always been the best way to pull the audience in, but surely Tim Burton doesn’t need to do this? Well, it’s true we almost didn’t see this movie in Lincoln as Odeon threatened to boycott this film due to its quick DVD release. Weeks before its release, Odeon managed to strike a deal with Disney (translation: gave in) meaning we were treated to this spectacular movie. Phew! Burton offers his usual crazy world, which we readily accept within minutes and crave more for days. The usual star studded family is cast, including the 7th time under Burtons’ direction for Johnny Depp is aptly cast as the Mad Hatter, and although a rather similar role to Willy Wonka, he manages to step away from previous character traits and put a whole new perspective to his ever deepening talent for acting! Our own Matt Lucas (Little Britain) becomes a self proclaimed ‘Hollywood Star’ as Tweedledum AND Tweedledee. Not to be missed this movie is only available for a short time in fantastic cinematic 3D.

However, he recently swapped satire for sitcom as he graced our screens in Skins as Professor David Blood. Addison’s lecture style quips never fail to disappoint and it guaranties a great evening. Contains Strong Language and Adult Themes.

For anyone who’s been following the Glee craze you will now it’s a smart, sassy show that’s bringing colour and comedy into our lives. If you haven’t, well done for not following the trend just for the sake of it, but get off your moral high horse and watch this show! You won’t regret it. The first few episodes have been rather translucent and haven’t really reeled me in. However, seeing the entire American football team dance to Beyonce‘Put a Ring On It’ made the show for me and I’ve been hooked ever since.

Smitten Jacob (Taylor Lautner) helps Bella after being dumped and they are soon on a whirl wind ride of adventure which includes riding motorbikes (badly) and jumping off cliffs. Each to their own, I guess! TEAM JACOB all the way! Size Doesn’t Matter! Short films have always been an unannounced love of mine. They are the cinematic equivalent of bite-size chocolates. Their truncated size itself justifies their existence. Think about it;

Shooter. Six Shooter (available on both YouTube and Veoh), is a film that pretty much defines dark humour. With a predictably brilliant performance from Brendan Gleeson as a recently widowed man who starts chatting with an enigmatic youth – portrayed superbly by Ruaidhri Conroy - on his train ride home.

“Would you like a chocolate bar?”

Moving swiftly on to animated short films, one of the most hilariously weird animations I have seen is David Shrigley’s Who I Am and What I Want. If you don’t know David Shrigley, first of all, shame on you, and secondly, he is most well-known for his quirky, funny, dark and occasionally disturbing sketches and drawings that he publishes. My favourite of these books is Ants Have Sex In Your Beer – it’s a classic, I assure you. Shrigley’s drawing’s constantly jab you into wondering whether he is a quiet genius or a complete psychopath, and Who I Am and What I Want is a wonderfully constructed and beautifully animated summation of these drawings that is conveniently available to watch on both YouTube and Vimeo. Oh yeah – its also narrated by Kevin Eldon – what more could you ask for?

“Err… I don’t know…” “They’re smaller than usual.” “Oh, go on then.” It works much the same for films and their miniature counterparts. You can enjoy all the visual spectacles and auditory nuances of a major motion picture without their pesky habit of lasting for one and a half gruelling hours. I mean, don’t you agree that Citizen Kane would have been infinitely more enjoyable had it lasted for 10 minutes? Of course you do. Because you are an intelligent and sensible person. Pixar’s For the Birds

Possibly one of the most famous animated shorts is Pixar’s For the Birds. I first saw this happy little gem on my VHS copy of Monsters, Inc.. For the Birds was placed before the film as bonus material. My 11 year old self was not aware of this, and had no idea what he was watching as the delightful plot unfolded before his eyes. I distinctly remember thinking “Well, that was good… why it was there I do not know…” In a nutshell, the film is a cute, cheery little tale about some birds on a telephone wire. Sounds riveting? It is. Trust me. (It’s also on YouTube by the way.)

And so, is it any wonder that the seemingly unflappable internet is a veritable short films goldmine? The internet is positively encrusted with cinematic shorts, reachable for free at the click of mouse. Some particularly shiny gems include Rob Pearlman’s Our Time Is Up. Available on YouTube, it is a highly enjoyable exploration into the mind of a psychiatrist, whose style of therapy immediately changes one fateful morning. The film was nominated for an Academy Award in 2005, but lost out to Martin McDonagh’s fantastic Six

If you go home and give any of these miniature cinematic delights I will have done my job. It’s a small world out there – exactly the way it should be.

Graduates Tale:

Shadowraith -

Not Your Average Detective Comic What began as a third year project, is now on its way to becoming a comic book success. Nicholas Dishington took Contemporary Lens Media at the University of Lincoln which he said gave him ‘motivation, useful techniques and produced friendly competition’ which lead to his interest in photo-comics. In preparation for his comics’, Shadowraith, release he has featured on Look North, BBC Radio Lincolnshire and had an interview in The Lincolnshire Echo. But he also took the time out to have a little chat to Bullet Magazine: I read your twitter account and you wrote how you got a call from a pensioner wanting to buy your comic, has the age range surprised you? Well, she was actually buying it for her grandson, which now makes me feel bad as it does contain swearing. We are going to put a warning on it from now on. It is an adult comic, the publishers only sell adult comics... that’s my excuse anyway! I don’t read comics, but I can’t wait to read yours. Do you think this will invite more ‘non-comic’ readers? It was originally targeted at comic readers, but the media has brought it to the attention of the viewers [and readers]. I went to the publishers for their opinion, and they decided to publish it, which is great. Nicholas started his work experience in his home town of Scunthorpe, but found roots in Lincoln and now thinks of it as his home. This is clear when looking at the comic, all the photographs were shot

[This ‘smoking shot’ was shot in his student accommodation, it took 40 minutes to get just right and it is because of this picture he started smoking!] 16

Celldweller instrumental album that would go well, but I never got round to it. The original idea was going to be about the band, in hindsight...it was terrible, the whole plot revolved around green pasta.

within Lincoln and there are some recognisable spots, for example the Stonebow. His ultimate dream would be to live in London; he would like to continue writing comics but also loves Portrait photography. And he’s already dreaming (literally) about his next project. He mused about angels, and described a futuristic Sci-Fi world. A step from Detective Fiction and intriguing as to what techniques he would use.

In addition to his website, Nicholas is also on Myspace, Facebook and regularly ‘tweets’! He believes the Myspace page has been most productive for his music shots, but Twitter is great for keeping in contact, as he has a tendency to waffle on, only allowing him to do so for 140 characters!

The comic is the hardboiled detective fiction we know and love, but what is extremely different is the fusion of fantastically edited pictures with animation. It takes around 40 minutes to shoot and edit each shot, but some are trickier than others, it is clear a lot of hard work goes into the images. Luckily, he is a persistent guy and can’t leave a picture alone until it is done.

Given an exclusive look at the comic, it was all I could do not to stop the interview and read it from cover to cover! Not only does it look stunning but people who have never read a comic before will love the great plot and amazing images. He described it as a very serious plot, with a few tongue in cheek moments as he believes ‘funny looses the re-read value’ Shadowraith is available now through Amazon and Murky Depths, priced at just £3.10 (plus P+P) Check out Nicholas’ website at: http://www.kaleidoscope-alchemist.co.uk/

It’s a very experimental process, not often seen in mainstream work; incorporating photographic images with illustration- do you think it will take off? I think so, i hope it does! Attempts like ‘Dear Deidre’ may have made it seem tacky, but if you approach it with good lighting and interesting composition people will take it. You’re very in to your music, would you ever think of putting the comic to a soundtrack? I actually thought about it, there’s a 17 4

SINGLE IN CATHEDRAL

CITY

Seems as though we are currently celebrating LGBT month, here at Bullet we have decided to change things around a little bit in this issues ‘Single in Cathedral City’ article.

If you would like to read more of our LGBT blogs then head over to our website www.bulletonline.org So here we have it the LGBT ‘Single in Cathedral City.’

Throughout the issue we have covered a lot about living an LGBT life, in various blogs and features within the magazine and the on the website as well. But we thought it would be interesting to hand over this page to get a male LGBT view on love, relationships, and sex.

quite happy to put my actions down to alcohol and think no more of it.

Yesterday I woke up in another boy’s bed. With both of us almost completely naked, he cupped my face in his hands and told me how perfect I was. In any other scenario, this would be a dream start to the day, but not today.

But 12 hours later and I find myself lying in his bed again, wanting to take my clothes off almost as much as I wished I wasn’t there. The first time was an accident; fine. But to let it happen any more is surely immoral?

This boy, as powerful-a-kisser as he was, wasn’t my boyfriend. Perhaps I should start closer to the beginning? I’ve been with my boyfriend for over two years now, and I love him more than I ever thought I could love another human being.

I’ve had a crush on this boy since I first moved to Lincoln, but I never thought I’d become ‘that’ person.

We’ve both had indiscretions at one time or another, but we always come back to each other – as though we’re drawn together by some unseen (and highly inconvenient) force. Urgh, I sometimes wish my morals weren’t so strong. I’ve always had a heart that intuitively followed by head, but it was only yesterday I realised just how closely. I’m ashamed to admit that I lay next to this person, head wringing with the aftermath of a full bottle of vodka between the two of us, and I felt happy. However briefly, I felt happy. Warm covers, strong hands pressing himself into me, the smell of his aftershave in the air – it was like something out of a movie. I was

I love my boyfriend, I really do. When we’re together, the world makes sense and I find a perpetual grin plastered across my face. But when we’re apart… I’ve started to feel distant. Like things make less sense than they should. And so I sit here writing this and wondering what to do next. Yes, my morals are strong, but am I strong enough to enforce them?

RANT! As long as there have been differences in society, there have been those who dislike those differences. From black and white people in America to the current tensions in Israel, people just don’t seem to get along. It makes me angry. Rant angry. Not many people will be aware of this, but February was Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender history month.  In honour of that, this article is dedicated to homophobia and coming out.

title was usually reserved for the bullies and nohopers that every school has. It is in this melee that homophobia is an inevitable outcome. Those seen as different for whatever reason (not just gay or lesbian) are picked on and bullied. It is this that is partly responsible for shocking statistics such as “40% of LGB youths attempt self harm at least once in their lives”. On a personal level, I’d like to add my experience. I was aware that I had no inclination towards the opposite sex from a very early age - middle primary school. When you look at society, and all around you are images of men and women kissing, holding hands and otherwise being affectionate it causes a great deal of internal conflict. Couple this with people openly expressing homophobic opinions, and it’s no wonder I kept quiet about it until I was 17. Even after I came out, I noticed that my male friends talked to me less and less, almost as if it was an affront to their masculinity. And yes, I had all the ignorant comments. Compared to other cases, mine was positively mild. Indeed, it is a sobering thought that this happens to thousands of people every year, only much worse.

Did you know that LGBT teenagers are more likely to commit suicide and self harm? I know at least one of my gay friends who has self harmed. He still bears the scars today, all because he thought he was wrong because he was different.  It’s a hidden shame. According to some statistics, as many as one in ten people may be gay or lesbian. When these kids are growing up, all they see is the cultural norm of different sex

“40% of LGB youths attempt self harm at least once in their lives.”

But it takes a bigger man to rise above them. Facing homophobia head on by confronting my friends really made me appreciate and be proud of my sexuality, not in the way that you would want to wear pink, suddenly develop a stereotypical camp accent and prance around, but simply to be you – not the gay man pretending to be attracted to women. It was only until I hit 17 that I became the true me, and I haven’t looked back ever since.

attraction and it causes a conflict in their mind between “what the world tells me is right” and “what I know is right for me”. Unfortunately these things never mix well, and it leads to depression and uncertainty about the future. I should know - I spent countless hours thinking about my sexuality as I slowly became aware of it – and they weren’t happy hours. Then comes the school days, a torrent of testosterone and popularity. Boys and girls trample all over each other to see who can be the most popular, the most pretty or (if you are from where I come from) the “hardest”. The latter

FASHION

‘The Modern Man’:

A Fashion Revolution In recent years the fashion industry has changed in such a way that a new modern man has emerged. The modern man today cares about being stylish and well-groomed. It has become the norm to pay attention to physical appearance and for the first time, we’re not afraid to admit it… Within the past few decades, we’ve seen society change the way men perceive fashion. Designers such as Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein have become pioneers in the revolution of men’s style; their past collections have proved that men don’t have to take a back seat when it comes to the world of fashion. The new men of today are more forward thinking and fashion conscious when it comes to what they wear. Nowadays, men don’t dress to impress, they dress the way they do because there is an acceptance in society that allows for individualism and expression in style. The ever increasing scrutiny of the paparazzi has caused all celebrities alike to step it up a level when it comes to fashion. Despite fashion originally being a strong female obsession, the famous male celebrities have also jumped onto the trend bandwagon and have now become a focal point for style savvy magazines. Metro-sexual celebrities, such as Orlando Bloom, Zac Efron and David Beckham, to name a few, have always been under the style spotlight. At the recent 2010 52nd Grammy Awards, the men were in the limelight not for their musical abilities, but for what they wore. 24

Green Day, known for being an outrageous group, and who subsequently won the Best Rock Album Grammy Award, wore tailored suits along with rock inspired jewellery. Usher wore a tailored three piece khaki suit with white trimming, along with some outrageous bling typical of the American singer.

stereotypical figure, fearful to be seen engaging in feminine activities like cleaning, cooking, or, heaven forbid, shopping! We now find ourselves in an age where men no longer feel that they must conform to their gender roles, and even the world of fashion is now fair game.

“Metro-sexual”

Fashion is not about looking back...it is about looking forward: and evolving. As this new age of style continues to grow and change like fashion The famous men of today are beacons who push has always done, the sooner men realise this and forward with the trends and consequently form a give it a go, the sooner they won’t get left behind. niche market based on their own style. Through fashion mags, clothing lines, and grooming Words: Craig Finch sponsorships, celebrities are inspiring even the most heterosexual male to become more engrossed in fashion and beauty, and form an individual style. Trends for men have become far more interesting and broad in recent years too. Design brands from the leading men’s fashion house Ermenegildo Zegna to the ever more popular high street store Topman, have taken centre stage in the fashion world. It was only recently that Topman launched its own solo collection for the London Fashion Week and have now even created its own luxury brand: Topman Ltd. During the Spring/Summer fashion week of 2010, oversized ‘man bags’ were present on several runways and designed by the likes of Burberry Prorsum, D&G, Zegna and Lanvin and are all too familiar to the same oversized bags that women have been clinging to for years.

“Does fashion lead to the feminisation of men?” Mention must also be paid to the ‘skinny’ jean fit, which is now sported by both the male and female population. The trend has seen an increase in a more fitted, dare I say it more ‘feminine’ style. It seems that men have become more fascinated by what jeans, blazers, or t-shirts best flatter their figures, rather than just do the job. As time has gone by, a new generation of fashion conscious, meticulously groomed men have emerged; through mediums such as TV, magazines, and the web, men now have access to the innovations of the online fashion world. Whereas yesterday’s man could be thought of as a

Style Shopping with Bullet. By Rhian Mason and Rachael Parish

When it comes to trends, it can be a confusing ordeal trying to pull off the latest ‘look’ of the moment. Clothing campaigns dress up images in a way that sometimes makes fashion feel unobtainable and out of reach.

So here at Bullet, we trawled through Lincoln’s best boutiques trying to find our favourite key pieces that tap into spring trends. We were looking for some fantastic and wearable pieces that could resemble the biggest look of the moment: Romanticism...and we weren’t disappointed! Lincoln’s High Street is awash with romantic styles that can look great in the transition from winter to summer. Already, we are seeing a much lighter, sunnier palette; nudes, champagne, and pastel shades are big news in Women’s fashion, and this will continue on to summer. Look out for Ruby Red’s gorgeous pieces, the off grey one shouldered dress (Image 11) and the beautiful back detail of the champagne coloured lace number (Image 8) are particularly beautiful. The delicate floral patterned dress (Image 12) and the candy coloured Lipsy piece (image 10) are also bang on trend. For accessories, there is a real feeling of fairytale fantasy, with Alice in Wonderland inspired details. Mono Boutique has some beautiful cameo ring designs and charm bracelets (Image 9 and 1) along with an array of pastel and nude tones throughout the store (Image 3). However, for something that shows your own original style Bit of Skirt has some quirky offerings. Along with vintage style alice bands and velvet bow brooches, they also have some sweet items such as the 50’s style blouse and pretty tutu that work together perfectly. The Spinning Wheel have some fantastic spring pieces, we loved the peach strapless dress (Image 2), especially teamed with turquoise accessories, for an ultra feminine look. The floral design of the Lipsy ruched dress was also incredibly feminine and romantic, even paired with black tights. With flattering feminine styles that suit any woman’s body this upcoming season, fashion doesn’t need to be a challenge, and hopefully we have proven that stylish ensembles are not hard to find within Lincoln’s array of stylish boutiques!

Alchemy Festival is a small family friendly festival with camping at www.hallfarmpark. co.uk South Kelsey, Lincolnshire! Last year was the festivals first ever, and the reviews are outstanding. Highly credited by one of my favourite websites, ‘eFestivals’ (see Bullet’s new online website with my online article http:// www.bulletonline.org/?page_id=298) as a fantastic, local three day festival.

The Bythams Music Festival – Not much has been passed up on this festival for 2010, but is always an assured hit. Check out http://www. bythamsmusicfestival.co.uk/ for details of last years festivals to give you an inside idea. It’s a one day festival, last year it cost £7. Not bad at all for two stages and nine hours of music! Not bad at all!

Although this festival is easily the dearest, racking in £60 per head, from what I hear on the grapevine it was fantastic, and looks to carry on gaining vast approval and looks set to be even bigger this year set between the 17th19th of September. Ones to Watch 2010 Uffie

Eliza Doolittle

Born in America, Raised in Hong-Kong and currently living in Paris, Uffie is a well-travelled female. Her interesting blend of electro-hop constantly sees her as being compared to number 1 artist Ke$ha, which is easy to see, but however must be frustrating for Uffie who has been making her unique sound since early 2006. Her music career recently went on hold, after a break up, brief marriage, swift divorce and then pregnancy. However, her heavily anticipated first official album will be released this spring; entitled ‘Sex Dreams and Denim Jeans, it will definitely be one to watch out for.

It’s been a busy few months for Eliza Doolittle. After putting her finishing touches to her debut album, making the video for her new single, doing shows and modelling for Naomi Campbell at her Haiti fundraising fashion show, it’s surely a sign of big things to come. Sounding like a mixture between the Beach Boys and Remi Nicole, her songs very much peg her as being the voice of summer. Ellie Goulding

Marina & The Diamonds Welsh singer/ songwriter Marina dropped out of University to pursue a course in dancing, and then one in singing in London. After getting noticed by Neon Gold Records in 2008, and it’s been a slippery slide to success ever since. Her more recent conquests include a runner up position for artist of 2010, as well as a number one on the NME chart for her single ‘Hollywood’. Having sold out her entire first big tour this summer, those of your without a ticket will have to settle for her debut album ‘The Family Jewels’ which is out now.

Ellie Goulding rose to fame after topping the BBC Sound of 2010 poll and winning the Critic’s Choice Award at the 2010 BRIT Awards. This year has already gotten off to a great start for her, and it already seems that the months ahead will be hectic as she promotes her new album ‘Lights’. With roots in folk music, Ellie came into her own when collaborating with Frankmusik, creating her electro sound. One thing is certain, the last person to win the Critic’s Choice Award at the Brits was Florence and the Machine, before that it was Adele, if the trend continues, Goulding is going to have a cracking year.

VARSITY LINCOLN VS. DERBY

This March marks the return of Varsity. Two days full to the brim with all the sport you could wish for, with the added edge of a chance to see the Union teams (hopefully) see off their Derby counterparts for the fourth consecutive year. The sheer passion and drama of the event has made Varsity possibly the biggest event on the Sports & Societies calendar. The various teams have done the University proud in the last three years, something that this years teams will be doing no matter what the result. The competition kicks off with the first leg of the competition, taking place on home soil on Monday 22nd of March. The event will kick off around 4.30 PM, so there will be no excuses for not being able to come and support your teams due to University work! Lincoln will be hosting the Basketball,

Badminton, Netball, Hockey, Squash and the Indoor Cricket competitions on day one. With each competition given equal weighting in terms of points, all games are vital with the Union teams hoping to take a handsome lead to Derby. At the end of the days play, there will be the first chance to water those parched lips, with the Tower bar hosting a special Varsity night. The return leg at Derby will be key, taking place on Wednesday 24th March. Finishing on away soil will make any victory that little bit sweeter. Wednesday sees the field sports take centre stage with the Football teams, Rugby teams, Rowing teams and the American Football teams battling it out for those vital points. Coaches will leave Lincoln at around nine o’clock, full to the brim with the teams and societies that represent not only their teams but also our University as a whole. Wednesday night sees the Engine Shed completing this years event with a Varsity Fever Pitch, where all the teams will be returning to hopefully complete their lap of honour on home turf.

Chris Farrell, the University of Lincoln Student Union Sports and Teams officer, explained the importance of the event: “Varsity brings a sense of community, which brings all students together. It pulls the strength of the Union from all areas, using all of the diverse range of Sports and Societies we have to represent us. It creates a real sense of camaraderie amongst the Union’s teams and societies, with everyone competing as one.”

Keep a special eye out for the Rugby boys, who annihilated their Derby counterparts 167-0 in last years event and the Women’s football team who have continually dominated in their varsity games.

Running for a good cause The 21st of March marks a significant date in many Lincoln runners’ diaries; it is the date of the annual 10 KM Lincoln Road Race. Bullet caught up with University of Lincoln student and competitor in this year’s Road Race, Nick Metcalf. Nick is running the event on behalf on the Teenage Cancer Trust in an attempt to raise funds for the charity.

thing you can do is just walk into a 10 km run unprepared. N: I am currently running 3 times a week of varying distances, trying to increase my speed and decrease the 10km time. I started off at around a 53minute pace, but hope to achieve under 45mins, which is doable I think. I’ve been having regular sports massages too, which seem to helping a lot. I did a half marathon a year or so ago and before University I was a competitive swimmer, so I have maintained a regular training regime since then, so its all been quite normal for me.

Bullet: Hi, Nick. 10 km is an awful long way, why did you decide to run in the event? Nick: Well, I was going to enter the race anyway; I’ve done marathons in the past, but not one as long as this for a while! It began as a fitness thing, but I read up on the event and noticed that in previous events there were numerous charity runners, so I thought that I should try and help a good cause.

B: How has the training impacted on your Uni life? You’re a third year now so I imagine you’re getting pretty busy right about now. N: Yeah, the work keeps on coming, but the training has been a nice release for me. It gives time where I can just forget about the mountain of work that is just rising and rising.

B: You’re running for the Teenage Cancer Trust, what can you tell us about them? N: They are a specialist charity whose aim is to build enough specific teenage cancer units so that by 2012, every teenager in the UK who is diagnosed with cancer can be treated in these specialist wards.  As they believe young people have a much better chance in their fight against cancer, if they are treated by teenage cancer experts, in an environment tailored to their needs. So they’re working every day to make that happen.

B: How will anyone know how to find you in the race? N: Ha ha, well I’ll be the only one wearing a fluorescent Teenage Cancer Trust vest! So I should be easy enough to spot. B: Well thanks for your time Nick, I hope everything goes to plan. You’ll have to let us know how it went and I hope that your sponsorship money keeps on increasing. I’ll certainly be adding to the pot!

B: Sounds like a really good cause, how much are you looking to raise? N: Well the original target was £100, but I surpassed that last week, so now it’s a case of trying to get as much as possible. The more money the better! Its all for a good cause!

N: Yeah me too! Hopefully there won’t be any broken legs or muscle tears to report on! Thank you. For more information on the Teenage Cancer Trust, visit www.teenagecancertrust.org

B: How can people get involved, in terms of sponsoring you? N: Well if you know me you should have done anyway! I have a just giving account. The web address is http://www.justgiving.com/ nicholasmetcalf. You can donate via your debit card or paypal, it doesn’t matter how much anyone gives, it all counts! B: What sort of training have you been doing? I know from experience the worst 34

Unless you’ve been living in a cave, you’ll probably know that the Super Bowl, the world’s biggest sporting event took place last month. With a sell out crowd of 75,000, over a billion people watching on TV and a half time show by The Who. The Super Bowl was, as usual much more than just a game of football, like many of the big ‘soccer’ games over here, it is a branded event just as much as a sport, an advertising slot for the game would have cost you between $2.5 and $2.8 million for a 30 second slot!

Hartley then retaliated with his third 40-yard field goal for the Saints, bringing the Super Bowl debutants within a point of the Colts going into the fourth and final quarter.

The Colts immediately had a chance to expand their slender lead but veteran Matt Stover missing his field goal attempt from 51-yards. With the Saints being gifted ball in a superb field position But without a doubt the 44th battle for the Vince they edged into a lead that they would refuse to Lombardi trophy took centre stage. The rest of the game seemed inevitable, with the saints having to equal the record Super Bowl deficit to stand any chance of taking home the silverware. The Colts failed to make the most of this dominance in the second quarter and failed to add to there impressive first quarter total. The Saints continued to push but found the Colt’s defence increasingly difficult to penetrate. They found themselves limited to two field goals from Garrett Hartley, reducing the deficit to 10-6 at half time. For the second half kick off, Saints Head Coach Sean Payton decided to roll the dice, sending his team out with instructions to try a risky onside kick. The gamble paid off richly with Brees teaming up with Thomas for a 16-yard screen pass that lead to the Saint’s first excursion into the 35 4
