HELLO MY BEAUTIES Right, I’m going to start off on a sad note and tell you guys that this is our last issue this year! – Bad times. BUT…no tears, we do have more to come in January so all is good! My team have been working really hard to bring you this issue and we hope you enjoy it. On a better note, I have rid the cold that crippled me for so long (ok, slight over exaggeration!) but this means I can bop around the Engine Shed on a weekly basis again! – Good times. As always, we’ll be bringing you top news stories, beautiful fashion tips, and keeping you updated with all the latest Sport, Music, and Entertainment. Check out our Features Section and read our ‘Day with the President’ feature. It’s important that you guys know what he’s up to and we’ll continue to keep an eye on him and be sure to report back! As someone who has eyes and ears in our Students’ Union, I have come to understand and appreciate the work that our SU Officers do for us. Some of you may be concerned that the SU don’t know if they’re ‘coming or going’, or perhaps they’ve ‘packed up and gone home’. Well, I can assure you they’re definitely here from the early hours of the morning until late at night. So, I thought it was wise to tell you guys what they have been doing over the last few months. As well as developing relationships with the students from each campus, such as Riseholme and Holbeach, the officers have been working hard dealing with student concerns. They are also trying their best to guarantee our time here at University is well spent, and our needs are catered for. If you have any problems or queries regarding the SU then drop me an email – bulletmagazine@lincoln.ac.uk Anyway friends, it is now time for me to pop off and leave you once again. I’m going to be annoying and say I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas (even though it feels like its ages away, time will fly!!) We’ll be back in January with another fantastic issue! Toodles!

burglaries RISE in student housing Students in Lincoln are being warned by police to ‘keep windows and doors locked at all times’ as burglars target student housing. So far this semester there have already been nearly 10 burglaries reported in the Carholme area, in what police are calling a ‘peak’ in student housing burglaries. PC Rick Mosley is the Community Beat Manager for the Carholme area and liaises closely with students at the University. He said that the burglaries are mainly due to insecure windows and doors in student housing. Another common cause for the break-ins has been through offenders ‘tailgating’ students into secure purpose built accommodation. This is where
students who use security fobs to get into their building hold the gate open for anyone behind them without knowing who they are. Second year student Sophie Card lives in the Carholme area and has already had someone attempt to break into her back garden: “I live in a house with another 3 girls so it’s always scary thinking someone may force their way in. I think more security measures need to be put in place to make sure that everyone is safe.” PC Mosley said that the most commonly stolen items are laptops and explained the reason why burglars are targeting student housing saying: “A burglar will know that there may be five laptops, five consoles or five MP3
Books or Beer? The extortionate prices of ‘necessary’ text books for courses are leaving many students in the red.
NEWS
Concerns are growing as some students cannot afford all the books and extra equipment needed for their course on a student budget. Book lists containing 10 or more supposedly mandatory textbooks are not always necessary. Students are told that certain textbooks are essential to get them through their degree, only to find out that a few chapters were needed for one assignment. Phillip Shepherd, an International Relations student from the University of Lincoln had to spend £90 on books for his second year. ‘It has left me with hardly any money to spend on socialising for the next few months. I’m sure
that I don’t need all the books but I don’t want to take that chance. It’s not really fair, if I spend money on books to work hard, I want to be able to play hard too, but now I can’t really afford to’. Not all books are available in the library, and when they are, are often in high demand. Buying a copy is the most sensible option, but at £20 a book, it’s a colossal purchase for a tiny student budget. ‘I don’t have a problem spending money on books, but only if they are necessary’ Phillip said. ‘I think lecturers need to tell us which books we must have instead of just suggesting helpful textbooks’. With the possibility of University tuition fees increasing, students can expect to be tightening their purse strings even more, and making the decision; beer and a social life, or books and a degree?

players in one student house, and that they may not be challenged if they are discovered.” He continued: “If you lose your laptop, you may lose your degree and your future career” PC Mosley and his team are advising students to register all their valuables on immobilise. com, a free website that allows the Police to return any recovered stolen items to the original owner. Are You Copping
A Feel?
Girls. Look around you. If there are ten other women in the room, chances are one or more of you will get breast cancer. And it could be before you hit 30. Every year over 45,000 new cases of Breast Cancer are diagnosed in the UK alone. The chances of developing this, now the most common form of cancer, have risen to one out of every nine women. Whilst the majority of new cases occur in women over 50, younger and younger girls are contracting the disease. Most girls don’t think they have the slightest chance of catching breast cancer until they hit middle age. But, as 23 year old Kristin Hallenga found out, it can strike at any age. Eight months before being diagnosed with breast cancer, Kristin was living her dream, following career in travel and tourism, and enjoying travelling all over the world. When she noticed changes in her breasts, she sought advice from her GP, who told her it was probably something “hormonal.”However, after a few months abroad, and with her breasts still very painful, Kristin again went to the doctor, who again gave her the same diagnosis. After literally begging for a second opinion, Kristin was finally diagnosed with having breast cancer.
For Breast Cancer Awareness month there are limited edition products like the Pink Flake chocolate bar and Pink M&M sweets to raise money for the charity. So if you are a bit strapped for cash, they are the perfect way to support Breast Cancer Awareness and indulge in something sweet too! There are also breast cancer t-shirts, pyjamas, mugs and wellington boots available from highstreet shops such as Peacocks and Tesco. However, if you really want to support the charity, why not do your Christmas shopping on www.giftshop.cancerresearch. org. They have a huge range of gifts including gadgets, jewellery, clothing and children’s toys; and the best part is proceeds go to Cancer Research UK.
How to check yourself.
Girls, you need to learn how to check yourself, it is never too early to start! Looking for changes in your breasts is important, but try not to be scared or over-cautious. Why not make checking your breasts a once-a-month routine, just like getting your legs waxed or having your highlights done! The CoppaFeel website gives brilliant advice on what changes to look for; ‘Look for changes in breast size, shape or postion, nipple inversion, puckering or dimpling. Rashes in or around the nipple and discharge from one or both nipples. Feel for lumps or thickening in your breasts, pain in your breast or armpit, and swelling under the armpit or around the collarbone’.
The SU did there part by having a ‘wear it pink’ day in the office which raised £61.87 for Breast Cancer Awareness. The SU Officers chose to wear pink PJ’s at the departing Vice Chancellor day to highlight the cause.
Now, Kristin is focusing her efforts on educating young girls on the importance of checking themselves for breast lumps regularly. Her campaign “Coppafeel” has received massive support since its launch earlier this year, receiving special recognition at this year’s Pride of Britain Awards. Hundreds of events, organised by the charity have already been held all over the country, with all the money made going towards spreading awareness in breast cancer. The first Students’ Union Council meeting of this academic year was a great success with a good turnout of people who wanted to represent their groups and categories with a healthy debate taking place about what would be happening within the Students’ Union this year.
The first thing to be introduced at the meeting was the “No – Platform Policy” in which the rules and regulations were set out about the equality policy that the Students’ Union would stand by. It included the main aims and objectives that would ensure that all students feel safe and protected on the University Campus and that all students can feel that they may take part in University life without worrying about intolerance and prejudice.
Another significant matter that was raised was by the spokesperson for the LGBT Society and this was regarding the matter of being a blood donor and that members of the LGBT felt that if they wanted to donate blood to the blood banks they should be just as entitled to as every other student on campus and it was asked that the Students’ Union Council could back them on protesting at the blood donating event that is happening later on in the year. As well as these matters more personal concerns were also taken on board by the Students’ Union Council such as the rise in the level of litter including cigarette ends around the campus particularly around the student village. Again the Council took this into consideration and are going to look into what can be done to solve this problem for example providing more bins around the campus and student living areas.
The meeting then carried on with matters that were affecting students at the University with the subject of the Riseholme bus that takes students to and from the campus, the Spokesperson for the Riseholme students brought up that it was often Overall the Students’ Union Council really is an unreliable and that this was affecting the students excellent way in which all students from every area as they weren’t arriving to lectures on time and of the University can get involved and to have a say sometimes they were unable to get there at all. working 9 to 5? no chance! A Day In The Life Of SU PRESIDENT Chris Charnley
Barely a minute goes by when the phone of Students’ Union president Chris Charnley doesn’t make itself heard. He’s already neck-deep in the morning’s calls by the time I arrive, as well as sorting out promotional material for the upcoming elections on the Riseholme campus. After barely enough time to say hello and run through his plans for the day, we’re off out the door for a meeting with the executive team of the SU. SPOTLIGHT... LGBT As we sit in “Bullet HQ” with Alanna Draper - Webster, Phil Krystic, Chris Hughes, and Jamie Hogue, some of the members from the LGBT Society we get chatting about matters surrounding the LGBT Committee and Society. We find out what they want to achieve, what they’re aiming for, and how you can get involed! Find out more when Bullet’s Kayleigh Taylor and Alice Tomkinson sat down and had a natter with the new LGBT Team! Why have you created a new LGBT Society and what is going to make your Society more successful than the last one? The main reason why the LGBT Society was set up in the first place was to ensure that all LGBT students at the University of Lincoln would have the support of a strong community which would be able to help them settle into University life without the worry of not fitting in with people and feeling isolated, and we feel that it is extremely important to have a strong voiced LGBT Society as there is a high suicide rate among young LBGT people who go to University and have had to leave their friends and family for the first time. This is often because people feel vulnerable in a new situation for example living with new people and having to make a brand new support network when they are so far away from home. Plus the LGBT Society would also like to give its members
a political voice and to get included with petitions and campaigns to fight for their rights not just while they are at University but then they branch out after their studies as well. In our opinion the reason why some of the LGBT Societies have not been as successful is because they advertised themselves as a more social group which was just about “having fun” but we want to be more of a community that includes events such as the LGBT Rainbow Ball or attending political campaigns or protests. We really are encouraged by the level of commitment shown already this year and so much enthusiasm has been shown and we are sure that this Society is going to be a success. Basically we want to have fun but still make a difference and to have a supportive community where everyone is accepted for who they are. What do you hope to achieve this year and have you got anything planned? There are many things that we as a Society and a Committee want to achieve this year. Socially we would like to organise more events like bowling and creating events that we can all attend as a group, we are also looking to have a Tower Bar Takeover and an LGBT Rainbow Ball. Apart form the social aspect of the Committee and Society we also have political ambitions such as petitioning against gay and bisexual men not being allowed to be a blood donor. We are planning to stage a petition to inform students about this as many people are not aware that only certain
14
members in Society are allowed to donate blood. Is this fair? No it isn’t. The campaign is going to focus on encouraging people to give blood on behalf of people that are not able to make a donation. We are also planning to send two of our members to the annual NUS LGBT conference in which they will learn how to run a successful campaign and to generally gain a better knowledge on how to run the Society and to gain fresh ideas and information to enhance the Society. Is anybody allowed to join the LGBT Committee and Society? Yes, we would love all members of the Student Body to support our Society and our causes and we would encourage anyone to attend our meetings and events. It is often a preconceived idea that groups such as ours only welcome LGBT members but this is not the case we are not about separating ourselves from the University, we are about supporting people and helping them to have an amazing experience at the University. In regards to people being anxious or worried to come and attend our meetings and socials, please feel free to come along. I would advise them that they could get in contact with one of our officers who can offer confidential advice and support. We have two men’s officers and a woman’s officer whose contact details can be found via our Facebook site. These officers can also help if any LGBT student is suffering mental or physical abuse or bullying, we are in direct contact with the University and the Students’ Union and can therefore liaise with them to sort out any problems or queries. So please let us know if anyone has had any problems, we are happy to help and we will try our best to sort them out for any student at the University. Come along to our meetings and chat with us, we have a laugh and you’ll meet some great friends. Do you feel that you have been given enough support from the Students’ Union to help set up your Society and Committee? The SU have given us nothing but support! We are really thankful as they provided us with posters, information and dedicated a lot of their time to helping our Society and making the first few meetings and events a success for us. All officers have been a real help and especially gone out of their way for us. I always say that you get out of life what you put in, and they they’ve proved that in the LGBT Societies eyes. We attended the Student Council and we felt that we had a voice and that our opinions were heard and most importantly listened to. On a personal level we feel that they have done a lot for the students at the University already and that they have made a lot of promising changes.
Confessions of an ex blood-donor Just a quick check? And yes, it’s as I thought. “Men who have sex with men cannot give blood.” That’s what I found when I clicked on the NHS website and tried to make a donation. My sexuality has been an obstacle before both mentally and socially and I suppose a little bit spiritually, but it’s never harmed my health. Being gay is acceptable – oh, yes. It’s perfectly all right to be sexually attracted to another man. And yet, as soon as I act on that attraction, I apparently become an incubus for the viral plague. Interesting. I’ll be sure to note that down when my skin starts falling off. It’s hard for me to accept that I can’t give blood, especially because I was a blood donor for a full year before I arrived at University. But suddenly, one day after a routine visit to the sexual health clinic (which, I might add, only confirmed my suspicions that I’m squeaky clean) I discover that I’m no longer eligible to give blood. I know, it shocked me too! I’m young, physically fit and legitimately disease-free, and yet because I sleep with men (well, only one in particular) I’m deemed a high-risk. I can see some vestige of logic behind the laws banning gay and bisexual men from giving blood – but that’s all they are: remnants of reasoning. At one time AIDS was regarded as a gay disease, yes, but we’re part of mainstream society now. We have largely the same rights as heterosexual people, and no less intelligence. We know to practice safe-sex, we know the dangers of having more than one sexual partner and we know to get regular blood and STI tests to make sure you stay out of harm’s way. All of which, incidentally, I do. It just seems so irresponsible to decline blood donations from perfectly healthy gay men when there are people in desperate need of it. I’d like to know that I could at least contribute to saving a life, rather than having to watch from the sidelines as other people contribute to society in a way that I’m forbidden to. That’s exactly why I’ll be supporting the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community this Wednesday by signing the petition to end the blanket ban on accepting gay and bisexual blood. If you want the chance to save a life, you should too. You don’t have to be gay or bisexual – we all have blood we can contribute. Come and donate yours, because like millions of gay men, I simply can’t. Join us on Wednesday 4th November outside the Engine Shed from 10:30 am – 12:45pm, and 2pm - 4pm. Join the campaign, end the needless discrimination. Jamie Hogue

The highly anticipated New Moon hits cinemas this November. In celebration of the release of the second film in the Twilight Saga, here are a few facts about the phenomenon you may not know:

An unfinished copy of the fifth book in the series, Midnight Sun, was leaked onto the internet. Stephanie Meyer was so hurt by this she refuses to release the book, or even finish it. Midnight Sun is from the perspective of Edward and we gain a lot more insight into his character by seeing what he is thinking about Bella and how confused his emotions are around her.

The first of four novels to be turned into films introduces the Cullen family, a unique clan of Vampires who have chosen a ‘vegetarian’ lifestyle, avoiding drinking human blood and instead trying to co-exist with them. The younger vampires (younger when they were turned into vampires) go to high school because the younger they pretend to be, the longer they can stay in a town. Bella meets the Cullen’s at school and is mesmerised by their peculiar look and intense presence. She is especially interested in Edward, but is taken aback when he storms out of their class and tries to switch classes to get away from her. The mystery deepens when Edward disappears and the other Cullen’s seem to be very interested in her. While trying to make friends and build a relationship with her estranged father, Bella starts to see clues as to what Edward really is. How will she react?
The second installment in the Twilight Saga sees Edward (Robert Pattinson) having to make some tough choices. After a birthday party gone wrong, Edward decides it is not safe for Bella (Kristen Stewart) while he’s around. Have your tissues at the ready. As the swelling music encompasses the scene, Edward leaves and Bella falls to the ground. Bella is heartbroken, there is a huge metaphorical hole inside her…Can anyone fill it? As her dad grows more and more worried about her catatonic state, he finally snaps and screams at her to do something! She sets out to make her dad happy and visits Jacob (Taylor Lautner) who becomes her friend. He is always so smiley, so happy, and she soon sees that he is her sun and fills that hole that Edward left, even if it is just a little bit. When a night out in Port Angeles brings back some painful, yet beautiful images of Edward, Bella searches out more ’death defying stunts’ in order to see her true love once more. Jacob thinks he is getting closer to her, teaching her to ride a motorbike, but Bella has a sly motive and her mind craves his imaginary voice. Unlike the first movie, this is far darker and sees a teenage girl losing everything she holds dear. Pattinson is quoted to have said, “I’m not the lead in the second film, Taylor Lautner is. I appear in Bella’s dreams, so I’m in it but the focus is not on me.” Producers have been sitting Lautner near Stewart in interviews and pictures and quelling rumours that Pattinson and Stewart are dating in an attempt to let fans get used to the fact that Edward isn’t in it very much! Jackson Rathbone who plays Jasper Cullen spoke out recently assuring fans “Edward is very prominent in the film, especially in Bella’s mind.”
Compared to other movie adaptations this falls far short of what fans of the novel would call good. Whereas books like Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings stayed true to the characters and only left out some events due to time constraints, Twilight seems to have misplaced the true characters. For example, when I read the book I found Bella to be sarcastic and comical, and not the moody, intense girl that Kristen Stewart portrays. What needs to be said about this film is that it was a low budget film that made it big, thanks to an amazing fan base for the novel. It’s true it is geared towards adolescent girls, and may be Hollywoodised to within an inch of its life, but has a great soundtrack, fantastic actors and is solid entertainment.

Lincoln’s Christmas Market. It’s that great time of year where you get to go home over Christmas, bombard Mum with 3 months of washing and maybe even a unique gift from the city they study in. Lincoln’s Christmas Market is world renowned, and you can pick some truly unique gifts from local store holders for your parents back home. The atmosphere is great, with official Lincolnshire sausages for sale (they are gorgeous, and I don’t even like sausages!) and if you are lucky enough it will snow. Yes, it is cold, wrap up warm, but the atmosphere is amazing. It is at the beginning of December, over the weekend and is definitely worth a trip up Steep Hill.

GAME ON!
RANT! I have come to the conclusion that Waterstones hates me.
Oh, and Smiths too. While I’m at it, I may as well list some other things that hate me: Pens, folders, trouser zips, those fiddly pens on chains in banks, the ticket barriers at Lincoln Station, TV remotes, tying laces, record players (well, that only applies to me)...I could go on forever. Why do they hate me? Because I am left handed. Why do I hate them back? Because they are designed to be used by (or sell stock exclusively for) right handed people.
The world of a lefty is a peculiar one. You always put out the “wrong hand” for handshakes, or people give you the pen in the “wrong hand” in the bank. Note how I am saying wrong hand in inverted commas, those clever righties assume that you must be somehow inferior since you write with your “cack-hand”. Anyway, as I was saying earlier – English is predisposed to hate left handed people. Having to take pieces of paper out of ring binders as your hand can’t fit on the right side is the bane of my life. It usually leads to remarks from the girl sat next to you in lecture halls along the lines of “I didn’t know you were left handed?” with undertones of “stop disrupting me and be locked away, dirty person”. Of course, it probably didn’t help that I kept nudging her throughout the lecture. In the end I try to resolve some of my writing problems and go to look at shop’s left handed sections. Similar to the tall height category (which I also unfortunately fall in to), the “left handed” category is a niche market, and therefore these shops get to charge a bomb on whatever quack pens they stock. I made the mistake of buying one once, in secondary school too – not a good 20
idea. As soon as it left my pencil case it was the focus of attention, I had people all over me going “Woah, is that a pen?” or “Can I try and write with it?” because it was differently shaped. It just seems that any attempt to blend in to the world of the righty only serves otherwise. So now I have to be segregated then? Look at me buying my own set of lefty scissors and lefty pens so that I don’t smudge my writing. Look at me having to drag the mouse over to the left every time I wish to use a computer. A lot of the time it is these small repetitive things which you end up doing so often that it just becomes second nature. I mean, would it kill table setters to set a table properly? The knife points inwards, okay? But before this rant becomes too depressing, I would like to point out a few advantages that the lefty has over the righty. The lefty shares his/her trait with many U.S presidents. We get our own special day of recognition. We are more likely to excel in creative areas. So next time you meet a lefty, please shake their hand properly. Please don’t make remarks about it, oh – and treat them with respect. They are the unique part of the population, which ends up making us lefties rather special. Words by Jonathan Holmes

Worried about accommodation next year? The one thing Lincoln is extremely good at it is offering top quality and reasonably priced student housing, there is a range of options from luxury apartments to private terrace housing. Finding a house in Lincoln that you can afford and has all the things you want is very feasible. There are 6 main student halls which range in price and what’s on offer but all are of a fair quality and offer all the things needed by students in Lincoln to make staying here a pleasant experience.
University Courts The Student Village is for many, the first non parental address, situated right on campus, the accommodation provided is basic but not the worst Uni halls by along stretch. As the first option for first years, courts are not the best option in Lincoln but are not too bad. Individual rooms are single and ensuite although the wet room is the source of many horror stories! In comparison to other Universities the fresher ghetto of University of Lincoln is far from the worst, there are better halls for more money but the experience and community of the courts is the best Lincoln has to offer.
“The beauty of courts is that you're so close to everything. Meaning that you can stumble out of bed at 8.45 in the morning, and even taking into account getting dressed, still be early for the 9am lecture.”
Pavilions
Pavilions is the largest and most impressionable student village in Lincoln thanks to its very distinctive architecture. Situated next to the University sports blocks and little away from the University itself, the Pavilions is one of Lincoln’s best student blocks. The 6 room apartments all come with a HD flat-screen TV and a good sized lounge come kitchen, all the rooms are double and have an ensuite. The Pavilions also has its own on site Bar/cafe, the Mezz Bar with minisupermarket (I’ve never found it). The Pavilions has a great atmosphere and the parties are always fun, however it is at the top end of the student budget.
“I love Pavilions! There is no other way to put it, it’s fantastic.”
Private Rental
Park court
I spent 2 years at this place and I loved it, the rooms are smaller than others but have everything you need and are all ensuite, no double bed unfortunately. The kitchens are basic but functional and are better than some other halls. The main draw back for Park Court was the price; I say was, at the current prices I think there is a better value to be found in Lincoln. Which is the reason I left, at the old price Park Court was by far the best value for money of all the student blocks, well maintained, a fair size and closer to town than anywhere(a big plus!) But the new prices just don’t seem to offer the same value for money as before; the additional rent isn’t justified by the mainly cosmetic improvements that have been made over the summer.
“The lifts are scary but it’s definitely The vast array of private rental options the best place to live!” available make it hard to generalise but the Lincoln student population is well catered in terms of private rentals, most come as a variety of 4 or 5 room house shares. Terrace housing in the lower end of Lincoln close to town and University. Lincoln West End has been the source of much hostility regarding the concentration of students in and around the Carholme road area to the detriment of local residents. 14 22
Junxion
Brayford Quays
Hayes Wharf
As close to the Uni as it is to town and with the Spar shop, library, Glasshouse and Engine Shed right outside Junxion is a cool student village. Location wise its perfect and has top quality faculties, the kitchens and lounge have added bonus’s like Plasma TV’s and free channels as well as a very handy dishwasher, and on site security does keep it safe. The courtyard in the middle was completely unknown to me for almost a year not living there myself and I was very impressed by the inside of the complex. That being said this block’s strengths are piled on in terms of rent being comparable to Pavilions, if not more.
Brayford Quays is the sister block for Park Court, not far from town and right on the waterfront, some apartments can have great views of the Brayford. Quays is set right above one of the busiest nightclubs in Lincoln as well as all the other waterfront bars and restaurants. The location is ideal in that respect but being opposite the University and a whole trip round the Brayford from it can be tedious. That being said the rooms are quite spacious and has the best ensuite of all the student blocks.
One of the newest student blocks in the imposing and classy tower block in the corner of the Brayford that is Hayes Wharf. Offering similar high spec accommodation on par with Pavilions and Junxion and with similar price tags it completes the trio of luxury halls that make up Lincoln’s more expensive range.
“It’s a home away from home, the staff are nice and friendly but the guy in the office is a bit scary”
Lincoln is a great place for students to live; there is a division between the high price and luxury student halls and the more affordable but still high quality ones. Lincoln’s student population is very well catered for, and in the private sector the market for student housing is very competitive but again highly biased towards the student market. This bias for the purposes of the student works very well and for those who are considering their options of accommodation for next year there is plenty of options available both in halls or the private property market.
Other helpful tips............... Did you know – 100% of advisers from the Uni and the SU would suggest you didn’t check out next year’s accommodation options until after the Annual Housing Fair at the Engine Shed in January Did you know – One of the most common referrals received by Uni and SU advisers in January of each year is about student wanting to get out of tenancy agreements they have signed into before the Annual Housing Fair Did you know – Many student tenancies offered to continuing students are what is called ‘Joint and Several’ and if someone leaves you could be liable to pay their share of the rent. Lincoln has a good supply of student accommodation and we along with the support services of the University would recommend that students take the opportunity view a number of properties before making your final selection. The Students’ Union team work closely together with Residential Services of the University to make sure all students can access as much information on available property, but should be aware that this information is planned to go ‘live’ on the same day of Annual Housing Fair which could mean by seeking information early you would not be informed about all available accommodation. How can we help? If you have any questions on selecting accommodation the University has guidelines on the accommodation web pages [www.lincoln. ac.uk/accommodation] or contact the Accommodation Team at the accommodation on campus or [accommodation@lincoln.ac.uk] University Residential Services Manager’s note. We know students feel they have the confidence to make decisions on next years accommodation. However, we do want to make sure that all students have access to information which will help make the right decision for them. By knowing all availability in the market place, having helpful hints from our information resources and knowing where to get advice and information, we hope all students will be able to secure appropriate, trouble free accommodation for their needs.

“ : Photoshop’s Greatest Creation...” Since the digital revolution, advertisements for the fashion and cosmetic industry have been strongly criticised for the false impression their more-than-perfect models create, with re-touching now at extreme levels, what effect does this practice have on consumers, and where does the blame lie?
FASHION
The word ‘beauty’ brings with it many connotations of glamour, perfection, and youth. We all strive for the best in life, and look to have pride in our appearances, whether it’s for a job interview, going out for the night... or a really hot date. Yet for most people, especially girls, the seemingly simple task of making oneself look good has turned into a ritual; the bathroom and bedroom becoming a no-go area for even the bravest of guys. Nevertheless, something must be driving this obsession with appearance and that culprit follows you wherever you go; down the high street, on the television and in fashion magazines like Vogue, Elle and Marie Claire; the truth is, beauty sells. You wouldn’t want to buy mascara if the advertisement shows a model with ‘average’ eyelashes, and anti-wrinkle creams would go bust if the advertisers show women with even the slightest of wrinkles! So fashion and cosmetic businesses like Dolce and Gabanna, Maybelline and L’Oreal need to keep their customer’s striving for the next big beauty innovation, and their answer to this?...Photoshop.

Bloctober – A Not So Silent Alarm… When I walked to Bullet’s office the night that Bloc Party were imminently ready to walk onto the Engine Sheds stage, little did anyone expect that the set that many have waited months to see would be severed due to the marriage of production smoke and a fire alarm rudely leading to a late-set evacuation. The Engine Shed has stood by the unarguable statement that “safety is a priority” and understandably is of detrimental importance for the survival and maintenance of a venue.
Akon @ Poughkeepsie, NY, June 3, 2007 - If Akon invites you up on stage, just say no. Why? At this particular show, a fan threw an item at the stage, barely missing the R&B singer. Akon asked security to escort the 15-year-old offender onto the stage, why? Just so he could pick him up and throw him back into the crowd. The incident occurred only two months after Akon landed in hot water for “simulating sex” with a 14-year-old girl on stage during a concert in Trinidad. What a nice fella!
Thought you had it bad at Bloc Party? Then this’ll lighten the load…Here’s a select choice of events at concerts that went horribly, horribly wrong…
Beastie Boys @ Athens Ejekt Festival, June 16, 2007 - Ejekt festival came to an abrupt and violent end when 30 masked men armed with CS-gas, iron bars and baseball bats stormed the stadium during the Beastie Boys’ set. Cars were set ablaze and a member of electronic group Underworld, who were set to close out the event, was injured in the melee. “Ejekt” surely couldn’t be a more fitting name for the fleeing attendees.

Guns N’ Roses @ St Louis, July 2, 1991 - Axl Rose dived into the audience during a performance near St. Louis to stop a fan from taking unauthorized photographs. After exchanging blows with the fan, Axl stormed offstage, sparking an arena-wide riot for which he was later arrested. The resulting melee had caused some $200,000 in damage and left more than 60 people injured, with accusatory fingers pointing in Rage Against the Machine, Lollapalooza Festival, every direction. July 18, 1993 - Actions spoke louder than words when Rage Against the Machine hit the during Lollapalooza ‘93. Instead of playing music, the four Metallica @ Montreal, August 8, 1992 - Fight Fire with band members stood on stage naked with duct tape over their mouths and the letters “PMRC” painted Fire may be a Metallica song, but this time frontman on their chests in a protest against censorship. James Hetfield took it one step too far. Hetfield For 15 minutes, the only sound heard during the misinterpreted a stage cue and wound up standing demonstration was guitar feedback and a booing in the middle of a pyrotechnic explosion. Though he crowd. However, being so morally righteous, Rage suffered second-degree burns to his arms and legs, James eventually continued the tour. All hail the King Against the Machine gave sympathy to these fans and delivered a free show for those disappointed of Metal. fans. N’awww! Justin Timberlake & Janet Jackson @ Super Bowl XX , February 1, 2004 - The pair almost emerged unscathed in their duet performance of a ‘Rock Your Body’ until Justin ripped off a part of Janet’s costume, exposing her bare breast to millions of viewers. American television station CBS was flooded with 200,000 complaints of indecent exposure following the “wardrobe malfunction.” Janet suffered severe media scrutiny after “Nipplegate”, and was even banned from appearing on the Grammys later in the month. JT received less flack for his involvement, and apologised for the fiasco on the live Grammy telecast.

Black Eyed Peas @ San Diego, CA, July 30, 2005 The Black Eyed Pees, sorry, Black Eyed Peas singer had a less-than-Glamorous moment when she wet herself on stage, mid song, to a sold out audience. Fergie explained herself to Scotland’s Daily Record, “I had a few drinks before going on stage, but I didn’t think to go to the bathroom. We were jumping around and my bladder just started you know ...” Yeah, who doesn’t know?
Music News First up, I must pay tribute to our own music venue, the Engine Shed. There are a few awesome sounding bands on their way to our neck of the woods, such as Lostprophets and The Enemy coming up in November, Lostprophets’ tickets are still on sale if you want to go see them and I would recommend it, great band, a lot of good things to say about them. For the more distant future the Editors have recently announced a date at the Engine Shed on 6th March, 2010. Tickets are on sale now. There are many, many more so if you’re interested swing onto the Engine Shed website, after seeing a few bands there myself I’ve found it to be a great place to see musicians and am very happy with the quality of music going through there at the moment.
U2 front man Bono recently stated that he believes Barack Obama to be a new force for peace and prosperity in the world he was also quoted ‘jokingly’ saying “I don’t speak for the rest of the world. Sometimes I think I do — but as my band mates will quickly (and loudly) point out, I don’t even speak for one small group of four musicians.” Well what’d you know even his band thinks he’s a pompous git? Thanks for reading people, just going to finish off by saying new albums coming up from Rihanna, Wolfmother and a re-release from Madness, go check them out! Words Joe Cox
Now, for just some random music news that I’ve plucked out of the air recently, which frankly I think we can all get a good laugh at.

You say you might be unfaithful, who’s to say he won’t be if he’s lost confidence in the relationship. With your attitude you’re going down a slippery slope to singledom. Be mature. Sit him down, tell him how you feel; communicate with him girl. IZABELLE Darlings! How the devil are we all? All settled back into this lovely University life once more? I wrote my first ‘to-do’ list the other day, and it even had one thing crossed off a few hours later, yes I sit in my ivory tower when I remember this. However and I apologise to exclude anyone but my fellow 3rd years, but is anyone else suffering from something I’ve termed as ‘3rd year guilt’? You know when you fully intended to indent your bum cheeks into a seat in the library, but you didn’t quite make it due to something far more exciting, like bed. And you’re left with that dead weight in the pit of your stomach as a constant reminder that your fate is only in your hands and everything you look at that vaguely resembles Academia has that slightly judgemental air about it? Yeah I thought so, not just me then. On a lighter note and if I recall correctly, the last time we spoke, I was deliberating over the matter of my un-sated lust. Unfortunately I have made no further progress with the two candidates I mentioned, however the other night I did end up cuddled up to a spiffing chap. I fear now looking back, that I was drunkenly rambling about my life... it’s an occupational hazard, and alas fairly hazy. But oh well he seemed nice, we exchanged a few sneaky kisses, an invitation was proposed for spooning, but to quote the fabulous clothing company, ‘spooning leads to forking’. And as much as I was tempted, almost wooed and however appetising a spot of horizontal jogging was, my friends came first. So after a final stubbly but delicious smooch, he toddled off into the early hours and I stumbled back into the house... literally.
definitely pushing myself this year, and as much as I’d like to be pushed in other ways that time will come (pun definitely intended) I’m loving every minute of it.
Cozy dreams my beauties. Cozy Dreams.
Q.
I am in trouble. I’ve met this guy who is just delectable. He’s everything that makes me tingle, and he makes me feel absolutely irresistible. The problem is, is that I’ve been with my boyfriend for 3 lovely and relatively uneventful years, he’s my rock and I just don’t know what to do or feel. HELP!? Torn, 21.
A.
Oh dear. Oh dear. Yes, this isn’t any help, but it sounds like you’re down the Brayford with no life belt, and as we all know that isn’t a place to be without some form of rescue. I think what you really need to consider is if this new and exciting fellow is new and exciting enough to risk your relationship. It sounds like a case that you’re mega comfy in your jammie bottoms i.e. your boy and this other Lothario, are those boots, you’d walk over hot coals to get some naked time loving in, that you glimpse through the shop window. Think of it as a rainy day, walking back from Uni and you see those boots and you think... ‘hells YES!, I’d like those on my tootsies’. They shine out at you like a beacon in the night, luring you to buy them, to caress your feet, kiss them, and hug them. Urging you to have filthy naked times in their presence but then you remember the thirty something pounds you could be spending on these delectable leather contraptions, should probably and more importantly be spent on something that will sustain you longer, like food. So before you scamper off to whisper naughty sweet nothings to this fellow, remember what you actually need, rather than what you want. Bonne Chance!!
And here you find me in my PJ’s frantically trying to finish this article, with three other word documents open and juggling research for two projects. I’m

Superstars It has been a decent month for the University’s various teams with some really good performances standing out, the most noticeable one coming from the Women’s Football Team who made an outstanding start of the season with an absolutely magnificent 20 – 3 win against Aston University, a performance which rightly earned them the “Team of the
Week” award. A further good performance came from the 1st Men’s Hockey Team who trounced Nottingham University 6 – 1. Overall, it wasn’t a bad set of results for the Union’s various teams against a set of pretty tough opponents. When asked how he thought Lincoln’s teams would perform this year, Chris Farrell SU Vice President Sports and Teams for
2009/2010, replied that he had “a strong belief that they would all do well because of the strength and the quality of the current players in each team” So well done to all the teams this week, the new recruits certainly seem up to the test!
Along with the Pep Rally, the Students’ Union has set up an event called SUPERSTARS 2009 – 2010. This will run throughout the year, which started in October and will be ending in April. Teams had to register four players by October 7th, those participants will then be called for a meeting where it will be explained that the event undertakes 5 rounds of different activities and challenges. For each round they will have to complete a challenge and receive points for how well they did.
SPORT
There will be a league table for males and females and those points will place them on how well they performed. The main aim is to build up as many points as they can to make sure they are in the ‘top 4’ by March time. In March the ‘top 4’ in each league will go into a semi and then final round. The winners will receive a Superstars trophy for 2009-2010 at the Sports and Societies Ball and also a place on the ‘Wall of Fame’ in the office with additional prizes. The respective Teams or Societies the participants are part of will also gain benefits from their players taking part and the support that their team gives them in the competition.
In further news, an interview with Chris Farrell revealed that there might be some new teams on the way for the Union. A Table Tennis Team has already set up and is just waiting for new members to join in. So if any of this tickles your fancy get yourself involved. Just pay the Sports and Societies team a visit in the usual place and sign yourself up. If you and your mates fancy setting up a Team or Society it’s never too late, just pop down and have a word with Chris Farrell or Kayleigh Valentine and they will see what they can do. You can find them in the SOAP Centre, Or contact them through email – sports@lincolnsu.com or societies@lincoln.com 32

The England Team’s Big
web adven In a strange scenario last month we had an England game that no broadcaster wanted to buy the rights for. The solution? Enter a little known company called Kentaro and a master plan to show the game on the Internet and charge viewers to watch it. There was immediately an outcry from the fans, who rightly so believed that all England games should be on free to air channels, the BBC did have the option to buy the rights for the game but saw a £1.5 million fee for a dead rubber game as a tad excessive. Hence football fans all over the country peering into their tiny computer screens to watch a game of football. Failing that they could nip to there local Odeon cinema and watch it there. But what were the results of this little web based adventure?
SPORT
Well Kentaro lauded the showing as a huge success, as they obviously would.
had an audience of 8.2 million, the reason why? It was on ITV. There are a number of reasons why the game on ITV brought in a bigger audience. Mainly because Chief executive of the it was free, to watch the Ukraine company, Phillip Grothe said game the viewers had to pay £4 in that the ‘Pioneering Broadcast advance or £11.99 on the day. I for example had my Dad on the phone platform.’ to me asking how he could get on the Internet. The pub factor is also Kentaro cited that over half a very important when screening million England fans signed up to watch the game. Now that’s not a football games, especially when England are involved. But in this bad audience but most England instance there was no way you games average around 10 million viewers, with the England-Portugal could watch the game at a pub, game at Euro 2004 having a record unless you took your laptop and 25 million TV viewers. service to realise there is a huge potential for Internet based sports events. Kentaro’s coverage wasn’t as exclusive as they made out though as their is live sport being frequently being shown (illegally) for free on a number of video hosting sites, with this England vs Ukraine game being one of them, so more savvy fans could watch the game for free with a similar level of quality. My friend managed to do exactly this with no streaming problems and the exact same stream for free, while I sat next to him with my £11.99 stream being extremely volatile, slow and quiet. But is this a viable future medium to broadcast sport? Well the reception is certainly encouraging as half a million viewers is very positive. It is worth nothing that this isn’t the sole venture of sport on over the Internet. As you can already watch Match of The Day live on the BBC’s website, ITV have streamed Champions League matches live on their website and in the summer Sky Sports viewers had access to the Ashes series live on their computer. There is an acute difference in these examples however, as all of these events are streamed alongside the television version giving the audience an
ture. option to use either medium, helpful if the television is busy whilst the events are on. They are also free, and if this medium is to be as successful as games shown on television then the price will have to go. Most viewers would rather go to the pub or watch it on television than have to pay to view the game online. Personally I think that while the Internet is an amazing platform for the various guises of the media, it is at best a last alternative. Most viewers would only use BBC’s internet stream of Match of The Day if they cannot watch it on TV, the same goes with the Cricket and ITV’s Internet based Champions League Coverage. Look at I Player or 4 on demand, they are only really used for viewers to catch up on what they have missed on the television, they are rarely used instead of the television. Everyone prefers to watch whatever it is they want to watch on a big screen, in high quality, with good sound and no buffering.
