News... THE
UNIVERSITIES ARE WORRIED EXCLUSIVE
Words by Hannah Rowley
Universities are worried about the scale of funding cuts being imposed by the government. Universities in the UK have had another budget cut of more than £130m after cuts of £200m earlier this year, with an estimated cut of £600m set for the long term future. On top of these budget cuts, universities are going to lose the additional 10,000 additional student places which were introduced this year. The worries are that the cuts in budgets and student places will have a bad effect on the economy. Last year saw record numbers of students applying to university
of students applying for budgets and fines of £3,799 grants and the money cut per student if they take on from the budgets is needed too many undergraduates. to pay for these grants. According to the BBC, Higher Education Minister, David Lammy, insisted that increasing numbers of students will still enjoy managed growth, however universities are going to see cuts in teaching
due to the recession, and this year even less will be successful. These cuts have come at a time when people are trying to upgrade their skills through gaining a degree, in order to get a job in the current tough economic crisis. The main reason for the cuts in funding is that there has been a rise in numbers 4
BEWARE OF ILLEGAL TAXI’S. They may offer a slightly cheaper fare which appeals to us students, however illegal taxi’s that are uninsured and unlicensed are putting the people who use them in danger. These illegal vehicles are known to target areas around bars, pubs, and clubs where people will be less vigilant because they have had a drink. It is likely that illegal taxis do not have a licensed driver and are not roadworthy. Passengers in the car may not be insured if there
was an accident, through no fault of their own. The City of Lincoln Council ensures that all legal taxis have drivers with a full driving licence and have had a full criminal record check. Every legal taxi must be insured and safe to carry passengers. The Council is keen to promote safety measures when booking taxis, especially late at night when you are a bit worse for wear. Hackney Carriages are the only legal taxi firm in Lincoln that can be used
without pre-booking. They victim of crime and put are all London style black in serious danger, all for cabs and have illuminated a slightly cheaper fare. signs saying ‘Taxi’. When pre-booking a taxi, use a firm that you are familiar with. Keep a few numbers in your phone. A legal private hire cab must have the company name and ‘City of Lincoln Private Hireillegal if not pre booked’ on each side of the vehicle’. The maximum punishment for operating an illegal taxi is £1000. As a passenger, you will not be punished, however you could be the

Prank calls have always been an issue for the Emergency Services. But tensions running high over Christmas and New Year saw an increase in phone calls with quite ridiculous problems. A woman in Manchester made an emergency 999 call to police because her cat was “doing her head in” as it had been playing with string for over two hours. Another man in Bolton phoned emergency services to say he was stuck on a patch of ice on a street and was too scared to move.

The top five UK bestselling albums of the decade have been announced. James Blunt’s debut album Back to Bedlam was the best selling album of the decade according to the Official Charts Company. It was released in 2005 and sold over 3 million copies in the UK alone. The second biggest seller was Dido with No Angels (2000) Number three went to Amy Winehouse and Back to Black (2006) Number four was the most recent album with Leona Lewis’ debut Spirit (2007) The fifth best selling album of the decade was White Ladder by David Gray (2000).
Selling unwanted Christmas Presents on e-bay is certainly not unheard of! But heartbroken Leanne Joseph has put up for sale ‘eight un-opened Christmas presents from my cheating boyfriend’. After finding out her colleague had slept with her boyfriend of three years, Miss Jones could not face opening the presents. Bids have already exceeded £200 and she has pledged to give all the money to a local hospice.

A car park only for women has opened in a shopping centre in China. The car parking spaces are a meter wider than normal spaces and have extra lighting. The car park is painted pink and light purple to appeal to women, and specially trained female parking attendants are on hand to guide women into the extra large spaces. Talk about stereotyping!

DEFINING THE DECADE. The Noughties, for most of us, has been the decade which has shaped our lives the most. For many it will be the decade of disappointment, of anger, and of disaster. There have been wars, recession and reality TV. We have seen the rise and fall of Bush and Blair, lost a planet, found Myface, searched for Google, hunted Osama, and believed in Obama. It's been a long, tough and costly decade. So let’s look at what defined it:
Bush and Blair
9/11
Two men are responsible for the decade being one of the most violent, intolerant and angry in recent history. The transatlantic Alliance hasn’t been stronger since WWII but this allegiance produced such hate, war, and death, that many of us will remember as defining our generation. This deceptive duo were architects of the War on Terror, Guantanamo bay, Iraq & Afghanistan. For 8 years this decade was cursed by Bush and Blair’s “special relationship”; and the end result is a decade and generation united in mutual hate for them both.
The worst domestic terror attack in American history, over 3000 lives lost. The outpouring of emotion and solidarity with America was global. Few could have seen the events it preceded and the paradigm shift in the security agenda of the world it caused. 9/11, from every perspective is arguably the most significant event since the fall of Communism. Through striking conspiracy theories to the deck of cards, 9/11 has been the most significant event of this decade, and likely the coming century.
War, Terror, Lies and Death Rise of the EU, India and China While the decade has been dominated by North Atlantic foreign policy, this economic decade has been far more hopeful outside the states. The past ten years have seen the fall of the American dream and the rise of an EuroAsiatic future. The EU is now the world’s largest economic actor with China and India booming even in the midst of recession. These powers will continue to grow in prominence as the Lisbon treaty reshapes Europe and the Asian markets continue to boom. The arrival of 3 major players in the world defined the last decade and will shape the next.
The 60’s had Vietnam and in the Noughties we have the War on Terror. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have generated controversy for so many reasons that it has politicised our generation. These wars built on lies and deception from those already mentioned created the pain, anger and hatred from which the deaths of the hundreds of soldiers fighting in the Middle Eastern crusade of the war on terror were caused. Death and deception are all that surrounds the illegal wars of this decade, wars which are still killing our soldiers with no end in sight, wars our leaders still support against our will.
Boom and Bust – from the Richest the world has ever been to the Credit crunch
This decade has seen the world rise to the richest it has ever been, with boom in the west, rapid development in the east, property bubbles and consumerism gone mad. But sandwiched between the .com, Boom/bust and the Credit Crunch those golden years seem so far away. The collapse of the US Subprime mortgage market, bad bankers, and the property bubble popping has left the world in a depression so deep that it may take to the middle of the next decade before the golden years return. Three words sum up this economic decade: Boom, Bust and Bankers.

GoogleWik / TweeBoMyFace
In the Noughties we discovered Google, and through Google we discovered everything else. Everything else includes Wikipedia, a site that has transformed our discovery of knowledge and has become a bible for the digital age. It's one part of an even larger and more important development. Web 2.0, which is the social networking and user generated online spaces joined by millions this decade, has been a revolution of all fronts, and a threat to everything that preceded it. Social networking has been an interesting journey, from bebo and MySpace in the early years of this decade to the hyper-site that is Facebook. At some point we have all been hooked and most of us still are. Our entire decade is online, personal but not private, we have signed up our lives to web and the fine print was only 140 characters long. The Internet has in this decade been more influential than all other mediums combined, it has elected presidents, toppled the charts, organised massive protests and undermined the monopolies of retail, print, music and film. EBay, blogs and Torrents; the memoirs for our decade can be found in only one place, cyberspace.
Fantasy and Reality
Global Warming, Global failure, Tsunamis and Katrina
One of the most positive aspects of this decade in the entertainment field is the triumph of Sci-fi and Fantasy. From Dr Who’s return, to Lost and Lord of the Rings, not forgetting Heroes, Halo, and Harry Potter. Every major book, TV series, video game and nearly all of the biggest blockbusters of the decade have been of these two genres. As a fan we have had the richest and most successful decade possible. It's simply been fantastic.
The Naughties has seen the environmental consciousness rise to the top of the political and social agenda. From the millions who felt the Heat in 2003, to those who suffered at the hands of Katrina. This decade has seen many attempts to save and warn the world against its greed, the inconvenient truth being that all attempts have failed to incur action from those responsible. The Boxing Day Tsunami of 2004 caused such catastrophic damage that for the first time it showed we’re not asking our children to inherit the Earth. We’re also asking them to save it because we are unable to do so.
....and on the other hand, we have X factor, Big brother and I'm a Celeb. Reality TV has been a buzzword for the Noughties and when the papers are looked at 50 years from now they will detail every moment of our obsession with it. X factor has topped the charts, Big Brother held hostage a generation, created (and killed?) Jade Goody, and heralded the rise and fall of Jordan.
Civil partnerships gained, Civil Liberties Lost
Anti discrimination laws, age of consent, section 28 gone, civil partnerships legal, it's been an important decade in the progress of some civil rights. But for many this decade will be seen as the most intrusive and intolerant in recent memory. Our civil liberties in the wake of the war on terror, here and around the world have diminished. In Britain we are in a big brother society, with cameras and systems of surveillance, detention without charge, stop and search, ASBO’s and the nanny state eroding our civil liberties throughout this decade. To hope this can be reversed or halted in our future is worth imagining.
Obama & Jackson
In the last two years two events seem to define and capture the end of this decade and provide hope for the future. While sad, the death of Michael Jackson caused an outpouring of emotion and respectful remembering of a star who in death defied the convention and controversies that surrounded him in life; his death was a moment to capture from this decade. “Yes we can”, a sentiment of hope and the chorus for a new generation. For many the election of Barack Obama and the incredible campaign which encompassed so much that has defined this decade, was a journey of hope that could heal much which had divided us in the past to make the next decade a better place to live. Obama and Jackson were important not just because of colour or achievement but of their capacity to transcend, to unite and inspire the world in grief, hardship and in triumph. This is a trait we should look to emulate and remember in the coming decade.

“Staying at University was the
best decision
of my life”
I always had it planned out. Get my GCSEs, go to Sixth Form then head off to university. The only thing I was never sure on was what I wanted to study. Confused and wondering what I would do, I was advised to choose something I would enjoy.
represented in Eastenders! I liked to write and I had an interest in the media, so journalism was my answer. They say they are your best years, where you meet friends for life and experience things you’ve never
Once I got my head around blackboard, the portal and the time table system (can’t imagine finding it hard now!) I was ready to start my new course. My first lecture introduced us to the course whichgot me excited about the prospect of journalism. I remember at one of the first lectures the lecturer asking “Who has a newspaper?” when nobody put their hand up he said “Call yourself bloody journalists”. It had begun...
“I started to get depressed and was beginning to wonder whether I wanted to be there at all” Trawling through one prospectus after the other (sound familiar?) I searched to see what options were available to me. I’d always loved media studies at school and sixth form, but I was sick of analysing how ethnic minorities were being
experienced before. Like most of you, I was so excited to start uni and experience the freedom and independence away from home.
I was only a few weeks into uni when I did myself a knee injury on a night out. At the time it was funny; dressed as a stupid pirate I Freshers week had been slipped and fell on my and gone and I’d had knee funny. from the flat to carry me down the stairs and put me in the car. After a long day at the hospital, with two of the best and most patient friends ever, I was put in a splint and sent on my way with crutches. I’d been in a splint before and it was hell. Great. Every day, one step at a time, three flights of stairs, I would head down and out of the flat to my lessons and then back up again, for weeks. My course is very active and hands on, we have to walk and drive to places for interviews and to film footage, so being in a splint and on crutches was a major handicap. I started to feel depressed about that and was beginning to wonder whether I wanted to be there at all. The work we were given seemed stupid and unnecessary. I realise now however that they were decent assessments to get us back into work mode and to think like journalists. But at the time it didn’t seem like that and I couldn’t imagine being there for
another two and a half years. I was considering quitting and thinking about other options.

RANT They keep me awake at night, they’re noisy, they look horrendous and yet the government is championing them as the best method of transport for the green brigade. I’m talking of course about trains. Like it or not, just about all of us will use one at some point in our lives – and I can guarantee that just about all will be disappointed. Chronic underfunding, cancellations and toilets you just don’t even venture in to mean that the “age of rail” seems to have become the age of fail. As I write this, I am as close to a sardine as I can possibly be without being caught in a net, processed and dipped in tomato sauce. As readers of my previous rants will be aware, I am a lanky chap, 6 foot 4 in fact. Now imagine this lanky chap sat on a table (my legs are too big for normal seating, and I know through experience that sitting sideways for 2 hours isn’t either pleasant or fun - in fact, it actually really hurts) with four others. Now imagine
this lanky chap trying to write this with a bag shoved in the minute gap to his left, and his arms tucked in because he daren’t hit the other seated people. I can already feel the RSI hitting my thumb. Oh, and it doesn’t help that the bloke to the right of me insists reading over his paper to look at what I’m writing (I’m watching you pal) Going back to the black and white days when all people on film were silent (and they all spoke way too fast), travelling by train was seen as romantic. Women with way too much lipstick would tenderly kiss their secret lovers goodbye whilst being enveloped by thick smoke. Nowadays you are likely to be enveloped by the sound of a man with a peg on his nose going “We are sorry for the delayyyy”, before being overwhelmed by the mass of people dashing for the alternate train. Hollywood it ain’t, romantic it certainly ain’t.
Any love struck couples running away romantically by train to The Savoy Hotel are nowadays more likely to stop in the nearest Travelodge because the excessive fares have killed sir’s wallet. Madam now hates him since he said he was a millionaire to win her over, and down the pan go their desires for each other. Okay, so I’m not going to give up Journalism for film noir directing, but it certainly labours my point. Unfortunately it seems the beleaguered traveller has no choice. Whilst driving is an alternate, the penny-pinchers over at Govt. HQ will make sure to tax the hell out of you for using a car. Road tax, insurance, M.O.T, the rising cost of oil – it’s all there, and it is all sapping a hole in your wallet. Until someone invents a way to get from A to B without having to carry 50 wind turbines or 2 sq meters of solar panelling, then it seems we are stuck with a loose loose situation. And we are all meant to love these machines? It’s not just trains either. The platforms are cold, the roofs leak and the lifts smell of piss and the contents of a drunken man’s stomach (I think I smell chicken curry)...oh, and there never seem to be any staff when you need them – which is why I ended up going to Newark to get back home. Take the train? I’d rather drive thank you.

OFF! Recently, I went to the cinema to see the film 2012. I paid a fair amount of money and I hoped to enjoy it. It starts off ok. Every disaster film has a few minutes or ten setting up the big problem. The Earth’s core is heating up. Bad times. And here’s what we do first: Take down the ‘Mona Lisa’ and replace it with a fake. We may all die but please let that bloody painting survive. Then, all the people who know about this terrible event that may happen in 2012 get killed off to stop the panic in everyone who really matters: The Entire Human Race!!! This is when we get introduced to John Cusack; he’s divorced, and has two kids, who he’s late to pick up. Drive John Cusack!!!! They go camping in some woods, where some scientists are experimenting on the Earth. All the while, Woody Harrelson plays a hippie who knows all about the impending disaster.
The rest of the film (and trust me there is a lot of it) has lots of other ‘stunning’ moments such as when John Cusack’s ex wife and her new boyfriend are arguing in a supermarket and he says “I feel like there’s something between us” and, would you believe it, a massive crack appears and it separates them. The little man inside me who laughs at shit jokes didn’t even find that funny. Or when they have to escape and they desperately need a plane but when they arrive at the airport the pilot is dead. Who could save them? John’s ex-wife’s boyfriend of course! He’s only had a few lessons but that makes him highly qualified in this film. They get in the plane but the runway turns into the Grand Canyon. They manage to avoid more buildings and a train (don’t ask) and make it to a safe height. Farewell California!!!
And the finale of course is when who would guess it (people who read the bible) when a big flood was coming what do you need? An arc!!! However, the most powerful people in the world are only allowed on this arc. Shame on you rich fuckers!! So, like a ninja, John Cusack and everyone else sneak on to one of the arcs and end up breaking it, resulting in the death of John’s exwife’s boyfriend death. Bad times. And due to the breakage, water can now get in. I stopped caring at that point. All that happens after that is: 1. We see scenes that resemble ‘Titanic’ and ‘Evan Almighty’. 2. John Cusack breaks the record for holding his breath. 3. John Cusack fixes the door. 4. People celebrate. In conclusion, it is a shit film. Okay, I agree, the effects are amazing but it’s nothing without a decent script or decent performances from decent actors. Turns out that part of Africa had nothing happen to it at all, so now the human race, or what’s left of it, live in South Africa. My final thought and general feel for the film is this: How can a disaster film be good when the ‘Mona Lisa’ is more important than billions of people? Words by James Hallam

TO THE EXTREME!
Parkour - An outsiders insight. A year and a half ago, on a hazy Friday night I stumbled into a man in a local Lincoln pub garden , as tends to happen on those hazy Friday nights, we started talking and soon got onto the conversation of what we both do for a living. The four words I heard him mutter have literally moulded my view of people and society
alike for the last 18 months “Im a Parkour instructor” he said in a voice that told me he knew exactly what I was going to say next and he was right “What’s Parkour?” . This is what he said, “There are many misconceptions about Parkour in our society. Mainly thanks to the media, a lot of people view Parkour,

as jumping off roofs, doing somersaults, acrobatics, and daredevil stunts. Sometimes it is even considered vandalism and antisocial. However the true nature of Parkour is much more deep and fulfilling than the public opinion.” Parkour could be defined as: The Art of Efficient Movement. It is about finding
the most efficient route of escape through any given environment, whether it is the city, the forest or even a beach. It is about utilising your environment to train your body, and developing skills to be used in an escape or rescue situation. "To Escape or Reach" as the founder David Belle has described it. I was baffled by this explanation so I asked him to explain it in simpler terms. He told me the best way to think of Parkour is to imagine running at an object i.e. a low wall, Parkour is the art of learning to clear that wall in the most fluent way possible, without it slowing you down and you losing a step. It could be by jumping it or you may even have to climb it Parkour teaches the student movements and techniques to ensure precision and safety whilst trying to clear objects or terrain in an effective manner. The reason I was so intrigued by this practice is I couldn’t quite figure out to what extent this could possibly mean to a generation who are seemingly obsessed with video games, facebook, and partying all night. However all my doubts and queries would soon be put to rest upon visiting one of the weekly sessions run by North Kesteven council in North Hykeham, Lincoln.
young people conducted themselves. Each one was focused on not only self improvement but also helping each other to achieve the goals they had set themselves it was honestly like nothing I had seen before, especially due to the fact that I had been volunteering at schools around Lincoln during my three years at the University. Since then I have followed the community closely on their web site (www.lincsparkour. com) and watching their videos on Youtube and continue to be amazed at the young community’s spirit and especially their ability to impress me and show just what the human body can do if you work hard enough. There is also a new society at Lincoln University dedicated to this practice set up by people who chose to study at Lincoln University to become part of this community. So if your at a loose end or just bored of killing digital zombies, join the facebook group “University of Lincoln Parkour” in order to find out more about how you can get involved in the new society, which in my opinion is destined for great things here in Lincoln. DVD Couples Retreat- released 8th February
cinema
A movie that ticks all the boxes...Including pointless, mediocre and unoriginal. The title is actually a warning! Couples, RETREAT! Vince Vaughn, the comedy hero of The Break Up, Starsky and Hutch and many more comedy bromance movies stars in this flop, loosely termed a ‘comedy’. It sees three couples take a vacation in order to try and save their friends marriage, but, predictably, they find cracks in their own relationships. This movie has very few laughs and is not a typical ‘Vaugner’. Disappointingly banal.
Hoodwinked Too! Hood V Evil released 29th January It’s rumoured that the films’ release was delayed due to the cost of the poster, and so it is unavailable as of yet, so, for your viewing pleasure here’s the first one! Joy to the world, Hoodwinked is back! Ok, so it’s no Pixar, and there’s no horny ogre to be found humping Cameron Diaz’s leg- but, is that a bad thing! Hoodwinked Too, similar to its predecessor, is simply awesome! It takes the ‘double meaning joke’ to a new level! Before we would long to see Woody make a stiff joke to Buzz and search endlessly for that rumoured naked scene spliced into The Rescuers (that guy at Cex Exchange needs to get a life!!) we can now see Red Riding Hood making blatant innuendos and still watch it with our 5 year old nieces!! We’re laughing at the sex jokes, they like the pretty colours and three little pigs! It’s all good! This sequel is a treat for the eyes and ears and a perfect movie for singletons avoiding the’ lovey doveyness’ of Valentine’s Day! A must see.
2/10 Scene It!: Twilight – DVD and board game released 5th February
Twilight fans are in for a treat with this ‘fun for the family’ quiz. Watch dad muse over Edwards age and mum stumble over Jacobs car’s name, while showing off the unbeatable knowledge that comes from being a ‘twihard’ fan! The game itself is quite slow, you have to wait for the DVD to load and explain the rules and get used to the remote- very frustrating, but the questions are really well thought out and you rarely get repeats, plus there are clips from the film to help you, or distract you! The aptly named ‘Twilightning Round’ is a lot of fun. It comes with a board (very exciting!) with Bella and Edward’s pic8/10 tures on, and you can either be Bella’s house, a piano, Bella’s truck or a baseball! Awe-inspiring! Game Review: Modern Warfare 2
After the huge success of Modern Warfare, selling 13 million copies worldwide and bestowed with a multitude of prestigious gaming awards, it was inevitable that the sequel would follow. The first featured amazing storylines coupled with pioneering graphics and an incredible online presence making it into arguably one of the greatest games of all time.
American streets ensuring you appreciate the beauty and depth of the graphics. Online multiplayer is evident as ever with more levels, more guns and more perks. Though you have to anticipate the ridiculous level of true committed fans of the game wasting you over and over online it all adds to the frustrating fun of MW2 as you slowly rise through the ranks. Levelling up through kills and overall wins unlocks more powerful guns and the power up “perks” allowing you to fight back against the fan boys. Another new feature to the online multiplayer is the “tactical nuke”. This addition is unlocked after 25 consecutive kills and when used whips through the map vaporizing all in its wake.
Why? It redefined what a video game can achieve as a medium. One sequence allows you to control your avatar as he crawls painfully out of a downed helicopter to watch helplessly as a nuclear explosion grows steadily closer until the sweet defeat of death washes over his soon to be irradiated corpse. Inappropriate? Perhaps. Innovative? Definitely. Rarely before has a game allowed you to feel immersed in a situation where you genuinely feel true empathy for the characters within the story. You become the character when playing this game. The developer could have included a beautifully rendered cut-scene depicting your slow progress onto the sun scorched streets but by placing you within the eyes of the character you become more psychologically involved with the situation and the game as a whole. These empathic relationships are evident in MW’s successor with Soap MacTavish, one of the characters you control in the first game. He leads your crack team to track down Makarov, the evil warlord creating global unrest and inciting western society’s annihilation. From the instant Soap saves you from plummeting off a frozen cliff face you realise this game affects you on a genuine emotional level. The gameplay is beautifully addictive with varied levels comprising of stealth sections and the other, more frequent, missions with explosions and guns and air strikes and such. Levels will take you from frozen wastelands to crowded South
After the outcry from the first game, co-operative modes have been included allowing you and a friend to team up to execute a wide variety of missions and “special ops”. These allow another level of gameplay and variety and when coupled with the storyline and online multiplayer it makes you feel that MW2 is three excellent games for the price of one (very expensive game). Overall this game, as does its predecessor, displays the future of the video game medium with engaging characters, stories and gameplay that genuinely affect you on an emotional level. Though videogames are often dismissed as the hobby of basement dwelling recluses this game has broken through the widely accepted stigma to connect with millions of people worldwide. If this game is used in conjunction with other recent fantastic video games such as Batman: Arkham Asylum and Halo ODST we will soon see a new era of video games free of prejudice and popular dismissal. Plus MW2 has loads of wicked cool guns and stuff. Josh Roberts

Why did you choose to release the game in iPod/iPhone format? The market viability on the App Store is at a much higher value than that of other markets (e.g. Xbox Live, Android, Palm Pre, etc.). Although the median is much lower, as with visibility, and entering the market with an unknown brand name in no way aids to the effort, the reality is that even good Indie games can make it to the top, but they have to be good enough on their own merit to make it that far. This was a great first step to get into the market and figure things out, and we sure did trip a lot.

Do you think it’s important for this puzzle style game remain in common usage rather than the ‘kill or be killed’ games that are so popular today? There are problems both ways you go. The App Store has been overrun by puzzle games, overrun by the "kill or be killed" games, and every other game in between. Although there are still some fringe concepts that are left to be explored on the App Store, it seems to us as though when you enter into that train of thought you start going into the direction that is going to require a technological advantag e. What this means is that in order to compete with other similar Apps out there, you really need to do your homewo rk, and really need to push a superior product. With large programs and small development teams, this turns into a lot of time spent in development. The technological advantage is simply one aspect of Indie that is, more or less, missing, and where larger studios come better equipped. So, there will always be these style of games, but the better business decision in Indie is to go horde-advantage and attack the concepts that nobody has done yet. 18

Review of iRis AG by Mathew Johns iRis AG, the new game by Rouge Pirate Ninja Interactive, is an innovativ e mix of Tetris and Columns but on a 3D semi circular layout. The basic idea of the game is to line up multi-coloured blocks of the same colour in groups of four or more but in a multitude of different ways, such as diagonally or zig-zag as long as they are connected as a chain. A new factors that iRis AG brings to games in this genre, which include favourites such as Bejewelled, is that the game blocks will fade into different colours during the game. This keeps the player on their toes while concentrating on both the upcoming blocks as well as the ones that have settled on bottom. The game is hard to get used to, because the touch screen is sensitive and an odd way to control a game of this style. Once you get used to it, of course, the game flows fairly easily. One thing that makes this game stick out is that you can play the game either with the blocks falling away from you or towards you, so you can play the way that’s most comfortable to the user. With the game being available on iPhone and iPod Touch, this means that people can subscribe their scores online which adds to the addictiveness and gives the player something to aim for. Overall I think this game is pretty decent and very addictive, it is not as easy as its counterparts like Bejewelled and Tetris to pick up and play, but once you get used to it its very entertain ing.

Hello Hotties…
Happy New Year Darlings!!
So, 2010… Start of a new decade. Anyone made any resolutions? Seems most resolutions are made to correct vices and faults we already have as opposed to the creation of new virtues. Cutting down on smoking, for example, being a common resolution. But we all make them. Mine are the standard three; cut down on smoking, drinking and casual sex. Very achievable! I’d like to work out more too. I’m skin and bones at the moment. I’d like to whip my shirt off and have someone say “Oh, well done” as opposed to the grimace I usually encounter. I’d also like to find a wife this year.. (Not even joking.) If I can find a woman worth settling down with, I’m there. I like the thrill of casual sex but it’s got nothing on having a loving partner climb under the covers with you.
I’m not sure if this is the case across the rest of the University of Lincoln community, but it has taken me until today to recover from the hedonism I’ve lived and breathed over the past few weeks not so much sex drugs, rock and roll, more naked times, alcohol, food and dancing, call it my spin on things. You find me for the first time in days not shuffling about in my PJ’s with my head hidden behind a hood. But I am washed AND dressed. I know what a renegade.
Did meet a really nice girl over the Christmas break, went on a couple of dates with her, then slept with someone else I’d met, coincidentally turned out to be her best friend. So yeah… Didn’t see her again. I’m never more self destructive then when I’m drunk. Seem to have this inbuilt anti-relationship part of my brain, triggered by booze. Think I’m the same as a lot of people though. You get so battered you just do what comes naturally to you without thinking, like some sleazy autopilot. This leads me back to my second resolution - Drink less. Less drink will mean minimal chance of messing stuff up including my brain and liver. Which also means less smoking and less casual sex by extension.
The weeks running up to Christmas, consisted of a lot of heightened emotion in my household. The atmosphere was fraught with stress, minds fizzing with inspiration and panic. It was a boiling pot of tension. Then everyone handed assignments in and we hit the town like never before; two very disgustingly but exhilaratingly drunken nights, on my part especially, ensued. We danced, drank, laughed and consumed away all our suppressed strain, and it turned out to be an extremely memorable week.
Oh! How could I forget darlings!! I’ve only gone and snared that elusive plaything I have been wiffling on about since we were introduced. There have been a number of naked times, no two way tango as yet, but it’ll happen. Ah and yet the poor sod has no comprehension of what he’s getting himself into. I have an insurmountably vivid imagination and add in not hearing from this fellow for over a week, I had him in a body bag, having fallen drunk into a snow covered pond over New Year. I jest not, his lack of understanding as to the amount of contact I need, is I hope before I stop writing for this magazine I can something that I will work on. This, I realise, does write about some girl I’ve met. But until then your stuck contradict my description of him as a ‘plaything’, but with my ramblings. I hope you stick to your resolutions if unfortunately I seem to have got myself rather attached you’ve made any. X to him. We shall see how it all pans out. If it doesn’t work it doesn’t, my education is more important, I plan to enjoy it. Smooches for the New Year, enjoy it! X

Is the fashion industry to blame for eating disorders? You decide... As eating disorders among young women continue to rise in the UK, are the images the fashion world promotes to blame? Bullet investigates the industry’s obsession with body perfection Last month Kate Moss sparked outrage for claiming “nothing tastes as good as skinny feels” in an interview for Women’s Wear Daily. Her comment has been labelled “dangerous”, by eating disorder charities. But should we really be blaming Moss, or the fashion industry itself? As a role model to millions of young women, Moss made the foolish mistake of being honest in an interview about her weight. As one of Britain’s most successful models, Moss has become the pin up for waif-wannabes everywhere. So when her comment broke into the world-wide media, finger inevitably pointed to her. B-eat, the UK’s leading eating disorder charity were quick to respond “Kate Moss used a phrase that is a known ‘mantra’ on pro anorexia websites. Someone who is such a style icon to many young and impressionable people should realise that throwaway remarks like this are dangerous and can be triggering to someone who’s at risk of developing an eating disorder”
eating disorders, and young people most at risk, the responsibility lies with the industry to change its ways. Mary George from Beat, knows the dangers for young people if the industry continues to promote these unattainable ideals, “There is no doubt that these images can be influential to young and impressionable people and although not directly the cause of an eating disorder, can be very unhelpful to them”. According to Mary, to see real change, the whole industry must work together, “The whole fashion industry would need to rethink these issues around portrayal of unrealistic body images – it has to come from the designer at the outset and be carried through to the high street retailer…”
Model behavior: Twenty years ago, the average model weighed 8 per cent less than the average woman—but today’s models weigh 23 per cent less.
But can Moss really be blamed for feeling like she has to live by this motto? The fashion industry itself set the standards for beauty, and Moss’s comments show that she is also not immune to the pressures women face. Surely she was simply stating a genuine fact, that to succeed in this business as she has done skinny must triumph.
When the death of two successful South American models hit the news in 2007, the fashion industry seemed to stand and take notice. Sisters Luisel and Eliana Ramos died just months apart. Eliana died from The fashion industry for many years has been rocked complications arising from anorexia, while Luisel by stories of skinny models, starving themselves to get to the top. The doll-like proportions and emaciated tragically collapsed and died on the catwalk during frames have simply become part of the job description. a fashion show in Montevideo from the same disease months later. But for the millions of women who consume these images on a daily basis, the inadequacy felt to conform to these impossible ideals has intensified. And yet the fashion industry’s rule of ‘thin as beautiful’ In light of this, Milan fashion week introduced a rule of participating models needing to have a BMI (body still prevails, even for the likes of Moss. But with mass index) of 18 or over to take part. at least 1.1 million people in the UK affected by 26
At this year’s London fashion week, designer Mark Fast controversially used size 12 and 14 models for his catwalk show. The show itself was critically acclaimed and his choice of models was embraced by the press, who considered his move ‘empowering’ for women everywhere.
Shulman’s words will have sent shock waves, and given many cause for concern. The responsibility must now lie with designers to rethink how they sell beauty to a market that is looking for change. So can the industry really transform itself? Only time will tell. But for now beauty always wins within an industry where no plain Jane will do....
And most recently American Glamour magazine included a feature where model Lizzie Miller proudly showed off her tummy rolls in its September issue. They Words: Rhian Mason later found themselves inundated with thousands of readers praising the magazine for portraying a ‘real’ woman in her natural glory. In light of these small steps, the industry seems to be making changes to lose its ‘size zero’ label. But with the average size being a 16 for British women, fashion is clearly still not representing the norm. The duty of the fashion industry should be to celebrate the diversity of the female form, but instead it confines beauty to the one desirable ‘look’ of the moment. As British Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman recently wrote in an open letter to international fashion designers, “We have now reached the point where many of the sample sizes don’t comfortably fit even the most established star models” She also accused designers of making magazines hire models with “jutting bones and no breasts or hips” and supplying only “minuscule” garments for Vogue photo shoots.
Curves vs. Skinny A recent study by St Andrews University, found that men prefer ‘normal’ curvy women. Researchers found that when they asked men to rate images, women in the ‘normal’ weight range were rated as better looking

the saturdays When a band gets mentioned such as The Saturdays, girls go “ah!” and boys go wild. And why shouldn’t they? A band that have had five top ten hits, four top five hits and two number twos definitely spells a band that is heading to the top, ‘Ego’ their latest single released on January 4th had been set to be “one to watch”. I caught up with The Saturday’s Mollie King to discuss the single, the video, their first ever headlining tour and talk world domination…
Firstly, your new single “Ego”, blissful breeze or did you have I’ve scoured YouTube and your someone in mind? fan base seems to be lapping it up wonderfully. M: I wouldn’t say it was a breeze, we did the shoot M: Well the video features midday on a Friday and we us being our alter-egos, we didn’t leave until 7am the next wanted to do something fun we day, so it was such a long day didn’t just want to be prancing like 19 hours or something. We around posing we wanted to do shot through the night until the something different to anything early hours of the morning so I we’ve done before so being didn’t get to bed until 8 o’clock superheroes, we just wanted the next morning. it to be something different, something fun. Mel C, Emma Bunton, JLS, Susan Boyle, the list goes on. Ego being the only song on the album he aided create, did you feel any form of pressure when recording or did everything fall into place perfectly? M: Awww Steve is such a nice guy and I think that’s why he makes the best records because everyone feels really comfortable with him, you walk into the studio. He’s just such a nice guy and we were really happy to be working with him and as soon as we heard the track we were like “oh my god”, we knew it was going to be a hit so we had to record it! 2009 proved to be a sensational year for you as a group including your first headlining tour with 24 shows across the UK, now you’ve had a couple of months to reflect, do you feel this tour has had an effect on your musical writing and also how you perceive the music scene as a live pilgrimage for fans? M: Oh it was amazing, I think my favourite thing is being on tour because you get to see all the fans and you get to see them singing and dancing to your songs and being artists that’s what we love to do, you know? I think when we have a tour it emphasises what we can do better on which makes us want to record the next album. It helps us really as we can kind of feed off the fans and from that we can learn what songs go down well with them which is why I think this album is stronger because we’ve seen what songs they like.
“Tangled Up Tour”, the show reportedly cost an estimated £3 million to stage, with £250,000 worth of pyrotechnics, did you take anything away from this and if so how has it aided you in terms of putting on a show and putting together music? M: It was so inspiring because obviously we toured with them and we were just in front of a black curtain and they came out and they were hanging from the ceiling, which showed us what kind of thing maybe we could do one day. It’s incredible, I grew up watching loads of DVDs like Britney and loads of other acts so being on a similar tour was really inspiring. Your previous single, Forever Is Over broke into the Australian chart and “The Work Tour” officially ended with two shows in the Philippines. Is world domination on the mind or in the hearts of the Saturdays or is this just a chain reaction of what chart entries indicate as a year and a half’s build up of a well received musical fan base? M: We really do want to go everywhere you know, we don’t to just want to stay in the UK. We finished our tour over in Asia which was really good, at somepoint we would like to go to Australia and in 2010 we are going to Europe so we do have our sights on going to loads of other different places. Forever is Over debuted in England at number two, what are your expectations of Ego?
M: It’s such a good track I really, really want to see a top 5, but You previously toured with Girls its difficult because the album Aloud in their forth tour, the is already out, so people have 29
already bought the song off iTunes and that kind of thing, I think it’s a really good track and a song that pubs will buy as well so fingers crossed so I’m hoping a top 5. 2010, a new decade and a new year, what’s on the agenda for The Saturdays or is it all hushhush? M: We are going to be promoting Ego around January, then we are off to Germany first and then back over to Asia hopefully followed by doing a tour over here again hopefully so we are going to be really busy! Thank you very much for your time and all the best in 2010.

Dancing Lotus blossom as their third album “Colour & Light” gets underway. If any of you picked up the first issue of Bullet, you might recall an interview with Jack Shaw from Dancing Lotus, one typo and six months on Jack Shaw and co enter the same room as one another for the first time in “forever”. After the initial discussion of football and other manly topics, the question is raised, “how long are you going to be here for tonight?” The answer Lanre gives is “all night”. To me, as a musical artist, I remember the days when I’ve been in the studio. The words that come to mind are; stress, arguments, hell, high blood pressure, tension and a lingering smell of what indicates that the deodorant we are wearing just isn’t cut out for this. But as I sat on one side of the studio all I could see was smiles and I could feel the sense of pride and passion and a lack of damp armpits.
So what can we expect from a third album? Their best album to date I have been well informed. Although time apart has happened, this doesn’t mean that musically the band have not kept in touch. “We’ve really found ourselves now,
my body rocking and thinking of not only how original this is, but how brilliant it is, and I am sure you will all feel the same. Don’t believe me? Then wait until early February when the guys will be gigging again. These boys won’t let you down, and if you still don’t believe me, then get yourself down to one of their regular gigs at the Mezz Bar or ask someone who has been. Their launch is expected to be at either the Tower Bar or at the Mezz Bar.
Dancing Lotus are a band that have grasped at almost every genre, plucking the finest parts and ramming them in a musical blender
“There was a time where I personally wondered whether this would even happen anymore” Joe Mac explains, to fill in the blanks Joe went to America to teach kids how to play the guitar whilst work, university and solo projects lingered from band member to band member. To me, it appeared as if these boys hadn’t even been apart for more than a day, pranks, insults and general fits of laughter that took us over an hour to film a video interview would have indicated to anyone and everyone that this time apart hadn’t even occurred. “I think we needed it” explained Nick, “after being together, touring the country and seeing each other day in day out for years it got too much at times.” Any musician will second this if they have had enough experience. “But now, we are back and we are definitely better for it”.
we’ve got all this experience and our writing has definitely developed, I think old and new fans will definitely appreciate this”. Dancing Lotus are a band that have grasped at almost every genre, plucking the finest parts and ramming them in a musical blender, and the results? Sensational! I stood in a corner as the lads ran through song after song and each time I was left with my foot tapping,

ICONS OF THE NOUGHTIES 2010 is not only a new year but also the beginning of a new decade for us all. But I also think we should also reflect on the last decade, it was an extremely fruitful decade for sports, with some serious amounts of money and publicity becoming incorporated into various sports. Major sporting competitions such as the Premier league or the NFL have evolved into worldwide corporations that have successfully sold their products to countries all over the world. It was decade of broken records, with sportsmen and women having access to unprecedented levels of help and training. We have seen two football world cups, three Olympics, five ashes series and four ryder cups. There have been some forgettable names, Theodoros Zagorakis? Or maybe Doug Howlett? (Answers on a postcard please) But we have seen the stratospheric rise of a number of unforgettable athletes. In no particular order this is Bullet’s sportsmen/women of the decade.
1.Zinedine Zidane
2. Tiger Woods
3. Roger Federer
4. Michael Phelps
An Algerian immigrant who became the greatest player of our generation. Zidane may have ended his career in acrimonious circumstances, leaving a head shaped imprint on the chest of Marco Materazzi in front of a global audience of millions. But it is fitting that we remember Zidane for the right reasons, he was a fantastic footballer, winner of every title a footballer could win, World Cups, league titles, European cups, you name it and Zidane will probably have a medal for it. One of only two footballer’s to win FIFA world player of the year twice and scorer of the greatest Champion’s League goal ever. (a stunning volley in the 2002 final against Bayer Leverkusen) Just don’t say anything about his mother.
Minus what could be a very public and demeaning end to his career and/or credibility, Tiger Woods is not only the best golf player of all time but he could well be the most successful sportsman of all time. He strode into what was a game for middle-aged white men and completely transformed all conceptions of the sport. He opened up the game of Golf to a completely new demographic and laughed in the face of lingering racism in sport He is one of the few sportsmen who have completely dominated a sport. He also defined new ground for sportsmen as products, lending his name to all manner of devices. He recently became the first sportsman in the world to earn over a Billion Dollars. He was pretty decent on the green as well; in 2000 and 2001 he created golfing history with his ‘Tiger Slam’ winning the four major trophies in golf. All that remains to be seen is whether he can get over his personal demons and dominate the next decade.
Another giant in his game, Federer has completely dominated the tennis world during the Noughties. A player of effortless class, he is widely regarded as the best tennis player ever; he has made a habit of rewriting the tennis record books. He has won a record fifteen grand slam titles, held the ATP number one ranking for a record 237 consecutive weeks and is one of a select band of players to win all four grand slam tournaments. His domination may have wobbled over the last few years due to the emergence of Rafael Nadal, (who is one of a very, very small percentage of tennis players to have a superior head to head with the Swiss) but Federer still continues his march into the record books. He is the perfect example for young players; clever, well spoken and humble. He looks set to be the only member of the Gillette champions to have kept their dignity unlike messrs Woods and Henry.
Michael Phelps was designed to swim, he has a six foot seven inch arm span, size fourteen feet and hypermobile ankles that enable him to whip his feet as if they were feet, which gives him something of a head start in the water. Phelps has amassed more Olympic medals than most small countries; fourteen gold medals (more than any other Olmpyian) and two silver medals. In the 2008 Olympics held in Beijing, Phelps won an unprecedented eight medals in a single Olympics, beating American Swimmer Mark Spitz, leaving Spitz to eulogize that Phelps that ‘Not only is this guy the greatest swimmer of all time and the greatest Olympian of all time, he’s maybe the greatest athlete of all time.’ High praise indeed.
Michael Schumacher could be the most divisive member of this list; he is obviously a ridiculously talented driver yet most probably due to jealously there was always a certain degree of scorn towards to the German. Schumacher,
according to the official Formula One website is ‘statistically the greatest driver the sport has ever seen.’ He won the world championship five times in his six years racing this decade. After four years of retirement Schumacher recently
announced that he would be getting behind the wheel again for the new Formula One season. Yet his most defining moment of the decade could well be his unveiling as the stig!!

HERE COME THE
TEENIES/ TENES/
TENS!
There may be a debate raging over what to call this next decade, the teenies? The tens? But there is one thing that is definite; it will be a very interesting decade in the sporting world. In the current climate that has been severely beaten down by the recession, the sporting world continues to go from strength to strength with audiences ever increasing for all sports. We will hopefully have fond memories from this decade and there are several dates that will jump out for fans of all sports.
The sporting decade will begin with a bang this summer with possibly the most important World Cup in a long time, Fabio’s men trail blazed their way into the finals scoring more goals along the way than any other country in qualifying and he whole country seems to have been instilled with the confidence that Fabio Capello has injected into his era of management. However this could really be England’s last real shot at the World Cup for quite a while; players such as John Terry, Steven Gerrard, David Beckham and Frank Lampard are coming to the end of their careers and will almost definitely not make the 2014 world cup. This leaves us with a huge problem as players such as Gerrard or Beckham only come around once in a generation and the lack of top
level young talent coming through is worrying. But we have a better chance than ever to come home with the trophy for the first time since 1966. The players are at the peak of their powers and scoring for fun, Capello has brought back the player’s confidence after the debacle under McClaren and in Wayne Rooney they have a player who would walk into any team in the world. There are worries about a lack of depth within the squad and question marks hanging over the goalkeeper position. But with a bit of luck and a lot of character we could well be celebrating this summer.
inspire another reworking of ‘Football’s Coming Home’) Then Olympics fever will kick in, Team GB has promised a spectacular games that will rival the 2008 Olympics held in Beijing. A generation of athletes are being meticulously being prepared to make their Olympic debuts, where the main goal will to go beyond the record medal haul achieved by Team GB in Beijing. Not only a sporting event, but a chance to develop England into a country capable of hosting the world’s biggest events and to give future generations world class facilities which will hopefully create a legacy for this decade So hopefully by 2012 England and the decades to come. will have won the world cup and been announced as the The next decade will hopefully hosts of the 2018 World Cup. be full of success for the (Which will hopefully not nation’s cricket side, a team

which is dominating the winter series with South Africa. The hope is that this side can push on and become one of, if not the best test side in the world, they are certainly showing their potential but the team needs to develop consistency to become a truly great side. A decade of dominance in the Ashes would do nicely and is a very feasible objective. The Australians are an aging side, with stars such as Ponting and Lee coming to the end of their careers. Whereas England have players reaching coming into the prime of their cricket careers, so the urn could well become accustomed to residing in England. Stars will born in the decade and others will fade away, expect Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi to become
even better. Mark Cavendish and Bradley Wiggins will hopefully challenge consistently in the Tour De France. David Beckham may well have his final soiree for England in South Africa; Johnny Wilkinson will sooner or later have to call it day and even the great Roger Federer will probably be usurped by Rafael Nadal. It’s not easy to predict who will rise to stardom this decade, but there are a few British sportsmen who could well become major players in their respective sports.
Arsenal’s youngest ever player in the process. He then became Arsenal’s youngest ever goal scorer in a carling cup-tie against Sheffield United. He is regarded as the Jewell in Arsenal’s glittering youth set up and will surely be an England regular sooner rather than later. Capello has already given the teenager his approval and some critics suggest he could well be on the plane to South Africa.

Expect him to begin challenging the big guns in 2010. The next decade will hopefully be just as exciting as the last and in ten years you’ll hopefully be looking back on a sporting legacy that bullet predicted!!
LINCOLN LACROSSE LADS TAKE YORK
BY STORM The University of Lincoln Lacrosse Team journeyed to York on to debut at the Fresher’s Tournment. Having only been established late last year by President Sam Morris and ten other keen members, after being disappointed to discover the absence of the sport in Lincoln. The University of Lincoln Lacrosse team were if anything, expecting to take a constructive beating at this fresher’s
tournament; their first competitive event yet. Still, on an early Sunday morning in November, they were ready to face-off for the very first time. It soon became clear that Lincoln were far from underdogs, as Joe Griffiths comfortably won the first ball and Lincoln began their 4-1 trashing of York with a goal straight from the training ground netted by Dan Jones; goals from Jonny Stamper, Tom Armenante and another from Dan
Jones adding to the tally. The team continued in the same fashion, dismissing tough opponents Sheffield Hallam with another 4-1 victory, with two outstanding goals from Sam Morris in midfield. Lincoln were then faced with a more challenging twenty minutes of Lacrosse; against Leeds. Despite taking a 2-1 lead in the first half, Lincoln were eventually and unfortunately overpowered by the big lads from

Leeds, who managed to take the game by three goals to two. Still, Lincoln had earned themselves a final game against Durham to claim third place. Like Sheffield Hallam and York, Durham were quickly overcome by the Lincoln boys who eased into a 3-0 win. Lincoln finished top scorers for the tournament and (especially with the occasional head check from Luke Venneear) certainly made their mark! Watch this space.
