NEW BEGINNINGS AND TRANSITIONS

As we turn the calendar to a new year, we look ahead to the promise of what’s to come and the resolutions we make. The change we aspire to make in ourselves (and who doesn’t think there’s something we can each improve?) is indicative of the hopefulness of growth and the promise of better things to come. Here at Bullis we are anticipating some changes in 2017 with great enthusiasm. Construction on the new Discovery Center is on schedule and each day brings the building closer and closer to completion. You can read an update on it on page 3, and keep an eye on daily progress via our website (www.bullis.org/discovery). Converting dreams and plans to steel beam and concrete is exhilarating, but it’s also important to plan for an efficient and smooth transition. As such, our own Transition Team of staff is hard at work already setting a course for absorbing this new facility into

our 2017-2018 school year plans so we can enjoy it from the first day of school next fall. We also recently proudly announced the addition of kindergarten and 1st grade, news that was met with great enthusiasm by current families and local alumni. Our tiniest new Bulldogs will start next fall and we are already talking with interested families and receiving applications for each of the new classes. As one of the very few schools in the area that have grades K-12 all on one campus, we are pleased to offer a seamless experience for students and their parents. Alleviating the stress of changing schools from elementary to middle school or middle to upper school, and offering a complete program within our caring community is indeed a benefit that we think will be in great demand. May your own transition to 2017 be one that is positive and fulfilling.

NEWS BITES

The warm and dry fall weather has allowed construction on the new Gerald L. Boarman Discovery Center to progress on schedule. After months of preparatory and underground work that was largely invisible to passers-by, the building seems to have sprung up in the last six months. By the start of 2017 it will be completely “wrapped,” or sealed from the outside, with much of the exterior brickwork also nearing completion. That’s what you can see as you drive or walk by (or check out the live cam at www. bullis.org/discovery). Here’s what you can’t see: -

In addition, the bio-retention ponds are being installed now to collect rainwater and manage run-off from the roof. This will filter out pollutants before the water goes back into the soil and will also prevent erosion and flooding in the area. The building is on schedule for completion by this summer. Contributing New Ideas: The Work of Bullisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Professional Learning Communities

Supporting the professional development of staff is as essential to school growth as meeting the many needs of students. Bullis has long provided opportunities for staff—both instructional and operational— to further skills and knowledge through workshops, conferences and guest speakers and in meetings to exchange ideas and expertise. The continued improvement that is a constant Bullis priority brings far-reaching benefits to classrooms as well as offices, helping to maintain our forward edge in education and as a community. In August 2013, Head of School Dr. Gerald Boarman asked staff members to create several Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) for colleagues to come together to explore and discuss topics of mutual interest. Several groups in a wide range of subjects were created, including: Young Adult Book Club; Sustainable Bullis; Technology Helping Hands; Writing; Young Women Leaders; Reading Initiative; Community Service@Bullis; When 24/7 Is Not Enough; Quiet; Building Grit; TwiceExceptional (2E) Learners; Digital Portfolios; Diversity and Equity; Cross-Curricular Connections; and new this year, Productivity Hacks. Now in its fourth year, the Bullis PLC

initiative is producing tangible results. Recognizing the valuable work being done, school administrators allotted more time in this year’s calendar for PLCs to meet, including late-delay mornings and a full professional development day. Some PLC groups also meet independently to further ongoing projects. “At first we thought the PLCs would change often, but many are still going strong,” says Lower School Technology and Math Coordinator Nate Gordon, who oversees the program. “They are furthering our understanding of certain topics, and some of their suggestions have already been implemented.” Notable contributions from Bullis PLCs include the new bottle filling stations— filtered water fountains—installed in several locations on campus beginning last year. The suggestion came from the Sustainable Bullis PLC headed by Middle School Technology Coordinator Rita Gerharz and Upper School English Teacher Brad Kosegarten, which focused on new ways for Bullis to be environmentally responsible. The Young Women Leaders PLC, in seeking strong female guest speakers, inspired a new Bullis tradition of a convocation speaker to address the students on the first day of school; the first speaker, in 2014, was alumna Nicole Cutts ’88, followed by Josh Basile ’03 in 2015 and Moise Fokou ’04 this year. “Ideas from PLCs are great additions to your toolbox— adult novels which group members read and discuss. “We’re interested in books that different kinds of readers might enjoy,” Ms. Vellenga says. Their discussions are extending into the classroom: Ms. Okulski filmed a PLC book discussion to show her 8th grade English students how to talk about books and that readers can express thoughts and feelings—with no wrong answers. In seeking ways to introduce students to more books, the group hopes to open up communication and broaden thinking skills in the classroom.

Support Services Coordinator Jason Eist, looked at ways to approach teaching children with exceptional learning needs, resulting in an expanded workspace and additional staff in the Academic Center. The Writing PLC, led by Upper School English Teacher Esty Foster, enjoyed lively discussions of capable writing, whether books, letters, emails or documents. Its members—a mix of faculty, administrative and office staff—focused on the importance of clear communication on and off campus.

“PLCs provide teachers with opportunities to explore new means and methods,” says Stacey Roshan, Upper School math teacher and technology coordinator. “Setting aside that time to exchange ideas and brainstorm approaches is very valuable.” Ms. Roshan helped develop a former PLC, Best Practices, which explored teaching and technology practices for classroom use. Attention to differences in Upper, Middle and Lower School learning inspired some individual shifts in teaching methods. For example,

Roshan now uses videos to show her Upper School math students best ways to approach classroom tasks. Lower School Teacher Elizabeth Jacobi utilized the iPads already in use in Lower School classes to clearly demonstrate some mathematical processes to her students. “We discovered new uses for technology to enhance learning processes,” Ms. Roshan says. “We saw how students were processing information and we were better able to intervene before stumbles could occur. Our smaller class sizes also help us to best use these tools,” she adds. Productivity Hacks, new this year and also organized by Roshan, focuses on helping faculty become more productive to positively influence teaching and help students adopt similar good habits. “We hope to learn ways to maintain balance as teachers and also personally in a world filled with technological distractions,” Ms. Roshan explains. “Then we can model for students how to manage distractions like emails,

alerts and voice mail.” To achieve that, the group plans to examine productivity studies, strategies and techniques. “Using hacks and methods to handle all the information coming at us daily is another way of living our Bullis motto of balance,” she points out. “It’s vital that we as teachers have productive habits. Students notice that.” The Young Women Leaders PLC, instrumental in bringing a female convocation speaker to Bullis, meets to brainstorm opportunities to give female students greater leadership roles in the classroom and on campus, from increasing attendance at girls’ sports games to promoting equal participation in academic projects. The PLC focuses on leadership issues facing girls and also how boys can perceive that. “We hope to develop more leadership roles for girls,” says Humanities and Global Studies Director Dr. Sara Romeyn, a member of the group, “and find ways to partner with divisions, teachers and grades to support and collaborate on ways to help girls develop resilience, grit and independence.”

Athletic Trainer Rachel Moore notes how this PLC, like others, can heighten staff awareness of a particular topic. “We can incorporate ideas from the PLC in the school community. It’s a great addition to your toolbox in the classroom and on the field. PLCs in general are another avenue to improvement.” “Sometimes PLCs are defined as a way to organize teachers,” Nate Gordon comments. “But that gets away from a grassroots idea. We want Bullis staff to be able to participate in open forums looking for solutions and

improvements that can then be shared. These are not task forces that examine and recommend,” he says. “Rather, they are member-centered groups bringing new ideas, concepts and activities to the classroom and the community.” The substantive work being done by staff in various PLC groups represents, for each member, a serious commitment of time and energy with satisfying results. The School is responding to suggestions made by its PLC groups—and the entire community is reaping the benefits.

Photo Safari: Iceland In June, seven Upper School students traveled to Iceland for a landscape photography workshop. Since Iceland is so far north and the summer solstice was right around the corner, the group experienced 24 hours of daylight throughout the week. They shot golden sunsets at midnight followed by pink sunrises at 2:30 a.m. with hours of colorful twilight in between. Students photographed black sand beaches covered in smooth pebbles, icebergs freshly broken off the largest polar ice cap in Europe, powerful waterfalls, glaciers covered in volcanic ash and fields upon fields of blooming lupines. They even hiked on a glacier with ice axes and crampons. Between shoots, students learned basic and advanced techniques for editing photos in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. From RAW image processing to blending multiple exposures and removing unwanted objects from photos, everyone came away with new digital darkroom skills.

Fall Musical Added to Theater Calendar When students, staff and parents returned to school, they discovered a fall musical scheduled on the calendar only ten days later. Das Barbecü is a musical comedy in which (as Variety described) “Wagner’s ‘Ring’ cycle is put to mock country-western tunes, dressed like a rhinestone cowboy and set deep in the heart of Texas.” While the show may not be universally familiar, “musical theater geeks really love it,” says Ms. Marcia Franklin, Bullis theater teacher and director of the show. Charles Johnson, who has taught theater at Bullis since 2009, explains why they chose it: “If we only do shows that everyone knows, then we’re contributing to the death of our own art form.” The show—with its small cast and low-scale technical requirements—is more easily produced early in the school year. Its relative obscurity also demanded that the cast do its own research to learn about parts. “We like to cultivate a culture of students wanting to learn, try new things and create their own unique performances,” says Mr. Johnson. Will Evans ’18, who played three different characters in the show, agrees. “This really pushed me and I could not fall back on easy habits,” he says. “I had to create my work from scratch.”

Twelve students auditioned in June for seven parts. For large winter musicals, such as “Anything Goes” and “Legally Blonde” from previous years, nearly everyone who auditions is cast. But the small shows created “healthy competition” as Ms. Franklin describes, “making the more serious students push themselves to really work for it.” Most who were not cast joined tech crew, which pleases the teachers. “Every actor in a theater program must know and appreciate all aspects, not just being on stage,” Ms. Franklin says. “It’s important to understand how scenery, staging and lighting moves around you.” Scripts were distributed in June, and the cast assembled three times in July for rehearsals. Daily rehearsals began in August, and students had to juggle theater along with other summer activities. For senior Sarah DeLeonibus, this proved especially challenging. “Between college

auditions and applications, a job and vacationing, this was one of my busiest summers. Still, I was excited to start rehearsals. I wouldn’t have been as happy if I hadn’t done it.” The show also provided Sydney Smith ’18 her first opportunity to assistant direct a show. “The small cast meant that I got to work with almost every scene and we bonded over the tough work load.” “It was great to start the year with people I love doing something I love,” says Will. “All the fun we had improved our work on stage.” For Sarah, the individual attention each cast member gets from the directors is a major advantage of a small show. “Through everyone’s endless encouragement, it was impossible not to succeed. Everyone knew and cared about each other, and we trusted each other immensely.”

Founders Day: The Start of a New Tradition

old School seal that morning as we began a new annual tradition at Bullis. Founders Day celebrates Bullis co-founders Commander William F. Bullis and his wife, Lois Hoover Bullis, along with the long history of our School and the values and traditions that bond us together. While still in their late 20s, the Bullises opened Bullis School in 1930 during the Great Depression. The fortitude and vision they had then was truly remarkable, and worth honoring today. Their school has grown from a preparatory program for the service academies with only 13 students to a coeducational school serving 840 students in grades 2-12.

As students and staff entered Howard Auditorium in The Blair Family Center for the Arts on October 24, music from the 1930s filled the room. On a screen above the stage, a slideshow depicted the history of Bullis in photos from across the decades. Everyone proudly wore a button featuring an

NEW IN THE GYM: VOLLEYBALL AND CONDITIONING Bullis Athletics added two new sports offerings to its program this fall. Girls volleyball and a strength and conditioning program met with great enthusiasm and participation. Both additions have a strong future ahead.

Volleyball Volleyball Coach Cheryl Weaver came to Bullis with an impressive resume as three-time All-American at Long Beach State University, two-time Big West Conference Player of the Year and a

member of the USA Volleyball team. “My first objective was to raise the girls’ volleyball knowledge, since most had never played before,” she says. “Along with teaching them the fundamentals, I also wanted them to become comfortable playing while learning to enjoy the game rather than worry about wins and losses.” Assistant Coach Leslie Tamara was also key to the development of the program. An ISL-competitive JV team, a developmental

program and a Middle School program attracted more than 50 girls to the sport. The JV team’s 8-1 fall record indicates its progression and hard work. “I look forward to increasing the popularity of the sport here and expect us to continue to be competitive and battle against the top teams in the ISL,” says Coach Weaver. Junior Hayley Sanders agrees. “We adapted really well to the sport and had an amazing season. I can’t wait to play next year at the varsity level!”

Strength & Conditioning Al Kallay started at Bullis in the spring of 2016 after the completion of the new fitness center in the Athletic Center. He works with each coach— Middle School, JV and Varsity— to design a specific training

regimen that will benefit the athletes, whether in-season or during the off-season. “The thing I most enjoy is developing students’ skills and encouraging a strong work ethic,” says Coach Kallay. “I like to build a strong foundation that every student athlete can benefit from, regardless of the sport.” As the program grows, he hopes to also add parents and staff to support their fitness interests as well. Football and baseball Head Coach Pat Cilento praises Coach Kallay’s dedication to Bullis’ student-athletes. “He’s helped them to perform at peak levels, and helped them understand more about nutrition, proper training techniques, rehab and speed. Al is a very valuable asset to the Bullis community.”

In Memoriam Dr. Constance Giles

Research before she passed away in August 2016. Her intense dedication to her students was remarkable, and she worked to improve whatever she touched, whether writing a letter or overseeing curriculum initiatives. Known for calm grace, elegance and dry humor, Dr. Giles was “charming, intelligent and accomplished,” remembers Head of School Dr. Gerald Boarman. “She made an indelible mark on the heart of our school.” As a Bullis learning specialist and administrator for 12 years, Dr. Constance Giles was a highly respected presence on the Bullis campus. “C. Giles,” as many co-workers affectionately called her, was part of the very fabric of the School, a friend to staff and parents alike and a Bullis parent herself; son Ian Giles graduated as a Lifer in 2014. Raised in Alabama, she earned a Ph.D. in education from the University of Florida and married Navy officer Anthony Giles, who retired a Captain in 2004. He often recalled his first sight of Connie, when she caught his attention by driving quickly by in a bright red convertible.

At the request of her family, a memorial service was held at Bullis on August 20, attended by her large family—she was one of ten siblings—and many members of the Bullis community. Her sister Kathryn Smith composed and read a poem in remembrance, and family members, friends and co-workers shared memories. Bullis Nurse Suzanne Douglass considered Dr. Giles a close friend. “Connie was my assigned mentor when I began here, though she didn’t know that. It became our shared joke,” she recalls. “A real friendship grew. She was my sounding board and confidante. Every conversation with her was fun and uplifting.”

In Memoriam Carlos Acha

together up a mountain. I will miss them both,” she says, “but I know I will see them again.” Mr. Acha is survived by a warm and loving family, including his wife Alicia, sons Alexis and Jonathan, and granddaughters Camila, 6, and newborn Juliana Charlotte, or “Charlie,” named for her grandfather.

Originally from La Paz, Bolivia, Carlos Acha came to the United States in 1982, later joining the Bullis kitchen staff alongside his brother-in-law, Gualberto Mendez, a current Bullis employee. Mr. Acha worked for a total of 15 years at Bullis before he passed away in June 2016. Dedicated to his work, “Carlos loved going to Bullis every day, loved seeing the students and loved his work,” remembers Alicia Acha, his wife of 25 years. Carlos’ smiling presence in the kitchen and dining room will not be forgotten: he added a happy note daily for students and staff alike. A lifelong soccer fan—he played soccer as a young man in Bolivia—he also loved gardening, grilling meals for his family “and just being

outdoors,” says his son Alex Acha. “What Bullis saw in the dining hall every day—my dad smiling and laughing—he was like that at home, too.” Nicknamed “Chaleco” by his family, he was much loved by his Bullis family too. “Carlos’ warm smile and gentle ways will be greatly missed here,” remarks Advancement Database Manager Wendy Matuszky. Kitchen staff member Rudith Cruz will always treasure her close friendship with Mr. Acha. “Such a smart man, very funny and happy—even when he was sick, he worked when he could. He wanted to do his best for Bullis.” Ms. Cruz recalls a vivid dream she had last spring where “I saw Carlos and (fellow Bullis employee) Connie Giles walking

HOMECOMING AND HALL OF FAME Nearly 140 alumni and their families packed the Dining Hall on October 14 for our annual Alumni Tailgate prior to the Homecoming football game. Camaraderie and exuberant reunions among old friends, classmates, coaches and teachers set the tone for a fun evening. With great food catered by Uncle Julio’s Rio Grande Café and Bulldog spirit high, the evening proved to be our most successful alumni tailgate yet! The event’s special highlight was the Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony honoring Moise Fokou ’04 (football) and Jordan Burke ’05 (lacrosse and ice hockey). A large group of friends and family were present to warmly support Moise and Jordan as they received this distinctive Bullis honor. During his senior year, Moise was named to the All-IAC football team and was voted the conference’s Most Valuable Player. Additionally, The Washington Post selected him to the 2nd Team All-Met for football. Jordan was named to the All-Met ice hockey team during his junior and senior years. CLASS OF 1996 CELEBRATES 20 YEARS Twenty years after their Bullis graduation, nearly 40 members of the class of ’96 gathered at a bash hosted by Kendall Mackintosh ’96 to reminisce and reconnect. Ryan Hayden traveled from Los Angeles to attend, saying it was important to him “because I spent a good portion of my childhood with these friends. We were a diverse group growing up, but I don’t think there was a closer group of 63 anywhere. It was as if we

picked up right where we left off in 1996.” Highlights of the evening included watching a video recording of the “Mr. Bulldog” competition and hearing Staci Burns laugh in person again, which Ryan described as “infectious— and a reminder of how much fun we had back then, and how much fun we had that night.” Thank you to Kendall for organizing and hosting such a special night.

CHRISTINE NOLAN ESSIG ’03

EXPLORING THE MANY PARALLELS BETWEEN ART AND SCIENCE

Perhaps it’s not surprising to those who know Christine Nolan ’03 that she pursued a career in performing arts; the 2003 edition of Roll Call’s “In 20 Years” column even predicted that she would be on Broadway. Not only is she an accomplished theater actress— having performed on Broadway and other prestigious venues— but she also works at NASA in public relations, educating people about the mission of the James Webb Space Telescope. This blend is ideal for Christine, a self-described “avid space enthusiast, passionate about the innovation which occurs at

the intersection of the arts and sciences.” Christine has performed in many productions, but insists that playing Kim in Bye Bye Birdie in 8th grade on the Bullis Dining Hall stage is among her favorites. “I remember such great energy—everyone had fun,” she recalls. During Christine’s six years at Bullis she grew as an artist while the fine arts department evolved as well, with the construction of The Blair Family Center for the Arts in her senior year. As a singer in the Counterpoints group, a member of band

and an actress in theater performances, Christine was exposed to different facets of performing arts. She says Bullis truly prepared her to pursue them. Among the first graduates to attend a music conservatory, she credits her teachers as “incredible—encouraging, constructive and particularly helpful in navigating the college audition and application process.” Christine attended the prestigious Boston Conservatory at Berklee, graduating in 2007 with a bachelor of fine arts degree and dreams to perform

on Broadway. Her unwavering tenacity and focus helped her dream come true when she landed an ensemble part in New York City Center’s production of Fanny, which she described as an “intense opportunity to perform on stage with actors I greatly admired.” Over the next seven years, Christine honed her craft, performing in revue concerts at Carnegie Hall and The Kennedy Center and shows in regional theaters nationwide. A professional and personal highlight was landing a role in the first national tour of the musical Hair, which opened

at The Kennedy Center and ended with a run on Broadway. “Working with some of the show’s original writers on the research process was really special for me,” she recalls. Reflecting on her time performing in Hair, she fondly remembers the wonderful spirit and camaraderie among her cast mates—who later joined together to perform “Let the Sun Shine In” at New York City’s 9/11 Memorial. When the Hair tour concluded, Christine returned to the Washington, D.C. area and married husband Richard Essig in July 2015. Since that time, she has immersed herself in the D.C. theater scene; in early 2016, she landed the lead role of Penelope Pennywise in Constellation Theatre’s production of Urinetown, which ran from August to October 2016. The Washington Post says Christine “stands out as one of the few apparent song-anddance-bred creatures in view, bringing belting force and a ripple of wit to the… role of Penelope Pennywise.” While Christine has not officially closed the door on performing, she sought a career with more stability in the field of science, a particular passion of hers. Knowing that NASA has a music and drama club, Christine submitted her resume, offering to help develop their program of connecting the parallels between science and the arts.

Her tenacity paid off when she was invited to speak at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center about that very topic. “I believe the arts and sciences work in tandem,” she says. “The arts are a wonderful tool that NASA uses more than people realize, in both a functional sense and to communicate NASA stories to the public.”

During her Urinetown run, Christine began a job at NASA in public relations, educating people about the James Webb Space Telescope, which is currently being assembled and will be launched in 2018 from French Guiana. “The telescope will allow us to see the first stars and galaxies that formed billions of years ago and will tell us more about exoplanets and perhaps even find building blocks of life elsewhere in the universe.” “I wanted to use my creativity to help solve problems,” states Christine. “Working at NASA and performing on stage gives me an irresistible blend of creative and data-driven worlds. The confidence I gained through my experiences in life and particularly at Bullis has been incredibly influential over the years and really allowed me to achieve my dreams. I am proud of the School and the further development of the arts department since I have graduated. I know Bullis will continue inspiring students to pursue their dreams too,” Christine says.

ANNE (FORD) BERKELEY ’99

EXPERIENCES ABROAD FOSTER NEW CAREER PATH Dr. Anne (Ford) Berkeley ’99 appreciated growing up in the Washington, D.C. area, particularly because of her exposure to many different cultures. “I always knew I wanted to travel and work overseas,” she says, “but I never could have imagined how influential those early experiences of family museum visits downtown and even just walking along Embassy Row would be in my life, eventually leading to my career as a naturopathic physician.” Initially, Anne had her heart set on international business. Upon graduation from Pennsylvania State University in 2003 with majors in international business and marketing, Anne moved to London, where she earned a master’s degree in international relations from Hult International Business School. After graduate school, she traveled extensively and found jobs along the way to support herself, including teaching English to children in Thailand, South Korea and India. Often located in remote, underprivileged areas, she was impressed with the many holistic practices that provided

effective natural healing. “In China and South Korea, I witnessed the healing power of acupuncture and herbs. In Thailand with Burmese refugees, I experienced the use of botanical medicine and in India I saw how nutrition and lifestyle can be used to heal the body,” she says. This inspired her to shift careers and combine similar practices with modern medicine to help people in the United States. When Anne returned to the U.S. in 2009, extensive research led her to focus on naturopathic medicine, which focuses on holistic, proactive prevention and comprehensive diagnosis and treatment. After two years of fulfilling pre-medical requirements, she completed four years of

medical school as well as clinical training at Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Arizona. Anne is now a licensed and board-certified naturopathic physician. In October 2016, Anne opened her practice in Washington, D.C., with a focus on providing individualized healthcare for men, women, and children. She draws on her international experience to “blend ancient wisdom with modern science,” she says. Her practice addresses the underlying conditions that may prevent a patient from achieving optimal health. She currently offers programs for health and wellness: a

Vital Woman Program which seeks to increase energy and a Vital Pregnancy Program to enhance fertility. Bullis Continues to Guide Long After Graduation Of all the lessons Ben Donoghue ’02 learned during his nine years at Bullis, self-discipline and commitment are the two that continue to serve him best. “I’m so proud to have attended Bullis and have had these traits instilled from a young age,” Ben says. “Whether on the lacrosse or football fields or in the classroom, and now as a police officer, I continue to apply these precepts with everything I do.” Following graduation, Ben found continued success as a studentathlete on the men’s lacrosse team at Brown University, from which he graduated in 2006. He entered law school at the University of Maryland in 2010, and during those three years of law school, he began strength training with a former Navy SEAL in Baltimore, who became a mentor and helped Ben to

realize his dream of working in public service as a police officer. “I realized that I thrive as part of a team and under high expectations,” he said. “I enjoyed the intellectual part of law, but I did not want to work as a lawyer.” After graduating law school in May 2013, Ben passed the Bar exam and began exploring options to join the police force. He endured nearly one year of physical training at the Police Academy and then joined the Anne Arundel County, Maryland police department. While Ben routinely rides alone during shifts, he describes the profession as having “very much a team feeling. You depend on each other to make it through each day as a unit.” The selfdiscipline that began at Bullis now helps Ben to be a proactive,

motivated police officer who is willing to take on tough calls. This very quality brought Ben an incredible achievement: in September when he was recognized as Anne Arundel County’s Northern District Police Officer of the Year at the County’s Chamber of Commerce Annual Community Safety Awards ceremony. Receiving this honor so early in his career was humbling for Ben. “Sharing it with my family, including my mother, [ former Bullis art teacher] Deb Donoghue, my brother, Nick ’05 and Bullis coaches Mike DelGrande and Jeff Bellistri, was even more gratifying,” Ben says. “Coach DelGrande did so much for me, teaching me about discipline and commitment to a team through adversity. He always had high expectations

and I wanted him to know that what I do now really reflects the principles he taught me. Additionally, Coach Bellistri has been a great friend to my family and a great mentor; always giving advice and listening. Having them celebrate a pivotal time in my professional career was special,” he explains. Bullis has remained an integral part of Ben’s life. Most recently, Ben has served as an assistant coach for the varsity boys lacrosse team. Reflecting on his Bullis experience, he says, “I have always been proud of the School’s roots in service and I’m confident that Bullis’ influence has guided me to a career where I can serve the public and give back. For that, I am truly grateful.”

’60 THOMAS CURTIS is enjoying his retirement after 38 years at Sirchie, a crime scene investigation and forensic science solutions company. As vice president, Tom was in charge of sales, new products and training in forensic science classes worldwide. Prior to joining Sirchie, Tom was a Naval aviator from 1967 to 1971. He currently resides in Raleigh, North Carolina.

’64 TOM SILLIMAN continues to love his work as an engineer and is CEO of Electronics Research, Inc. which supplies products for the radio and television industries, based in Chandler, Indiana. Tom is also a trained tower climber and rescuer and designs broadcast antennas, feed lines and filters for television and radio. His unique set of skills, including no fear of heights and his skill as a design engineer, have been featured on 20/20, the Discovery Channel and Ripley’s Believe it or Not, among many other programs. Currently, Tom is working on the final details of a contract to build an FM auxiliary antenna for The Empire State Building for all 19 FM stations operating from the building.

’68 ANDREW FARTHING is enjoying his retirement on the Cayman Islands, where he was granted residency in

2009. He loves sailing, fishing, traveling and giving back to his community through pro bono service activities. Prior to his retirement, Andrew worked in consulting businesses on process improvements and information technology implementations. He and his wife have three adult children.

He was born on August 21 and shares his name with four generations of Marusaks, including proud grandfather, Bullis alumnus and beloved teacher, Andrew V. Marusak III ’66. DARNELL “SPORTY” EVANS is really excited to return to Bullis this year as head JV coach of Bullis’ boys basketball team. This will be his 13th season coaching basketball, after nine years at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School and three years at Bishop Ireton High School. Additionally, Darnell just finished his third year coaching varsity football defensive backs at Quince Orchard High School. Darnell has two children, daughter Kendall, 6, and son Xavier, 3. This fall, MATTHEW ROSENBLATT began an exciting opportunity, joining The Friedson Group (a Long & Foster Real Estate Inc. team) in the Washington, D.C. metro area. ’98 On June 14, CARL TUGBERK, his wife, Jen and their Spanish water dog, Barnaby, welcomed Hayden Sylvia Tugberk to the world. Hayden was born happy and healthy at 9 pounds 7 ounces. Carl joined TTR Sotheby’s International Realty as an associate broker at the beginning of the year, in addition to continuing his career as a securities attorney at the Municipal Securities Rulemaking Board.

’00 KATE CLUTE is in her fourth year of teaching at the American Embassy School in New Delhi, India. This year she is teaching 2nd grade to students from several countries including the United States, England, South Korea, Norway and the United Kingdom. Kate says the best part of her job is spending the day with kids. AES is a one-toone iPad school and kids have their own blogs, know how to code and have designed their own video games. “I’m learning so much about integrating technology into the classroom in authentic ways,” Kate says. “I feel very lucky to teach in India because of the diverse student population.” JD DRISCOLL has had an exciting year. Earlier this year, he returned from his fifth overseas deployment with the United States Marine Corps, where he was the commanding officer of India Company, 3D Battalion, 8th Marines. In May, JD was promoted to major and in July, his family relocated to Buffalo, New York where he is currently serving as the inspector instructor for Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 25th Marines. JD returned to Bullis in June for the alumni crab feast and notes it was incredible to see how much the School has grown and yet still has the same old feeling. LINDSEY (GOODMAN) SIMPSON works as an aesthetician at Bespoke Aesthetics in Washington, D.C., consulting one-on-one with clients to understand their unique skincare needs and concerns and providing customized solutions to improve their skin, overall energy and well-being. Lindsey and her husband JOHN SIMPSON ’98 have two sons, Miles, 6 and Oliver, 3. Earlier this year BRIAN LUMPKIN joined RE/MAX Reality Services serving the Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. areas and was recently recognized as #40 out of the Top 100 producing agents with over 4,000 agents in the DC market place. A few years ago, Tanner accepted a position to build out the research team at Vista Equity Partners, a private equity firm focused on investing in software and technology-enabled businesses. While work keeps Tanner busy, he recently traveled to Iceland to celebrate his 35th birthday. Tanner loves connecting with old friends, so drop him a line if you’re ever in Austin.

’01 MONIQUE CURRIE’S Washington Mystics jersey is hanging in the WNBA exhibit at the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. Monique played seven seasons with the Mystics from 2007-2014, and recently started her first season with the San Antonio Stars. Currently in the off-season, Monique is playing basketball in South Korea for Woori Bank Wibee. NICOLAS KVASNOVSKY left Arhaus furniture in September after several years to pursue a new opportunity as the senior account manager for Standard Business Furniture, an independent full-service furniture dealership based in Maryland. He says he is “so excited for this new venture!” Nick also had a great time catching up with many of his Bullis friends at the wedding of Frank Gravino ’01 in October.

Erin received her master’s degree in educational leadership from Wingate University in North Carolina and currently is in her first year as Head of Lower School at Providence Day School, an independent K-12 school in Charlotte. Erin enjoys spending time with her friends and family, including her husband Ryan and their son Zane, 2. FRANK GRAVINO and Patricia Ryan were married October 8 in Minneapolis. LAURA STEYER obtained her master’s in social work from Catholic University in 2013 and worked for the city of Alexandria, Virginia and in private practice for over a year. She returned to Bullis last year as an Admission associate and assistant girls lacrosse coach. Laura says she is so happy to be back at her alma mater, working with students on the field as well as with prospective Bullis families. On October 8, a team of family and friends led by CLAUDIA (BAHAR) LAY ’04 and Martin Bahar ’02 came together for the 8th consecutive year to remember Maddie Bahar ’01 by walking in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Light The Night Walk at Rockville Town Square. Maddie’s Team was formed in 2009 after Maddie lost a ninemonth battle with plasma cell leukemia at the age of 25. Since then, Maddie’s siblings have led the team to raise more than $165,000 for the mission of LLS in memory of their sister. He still enjoys playing ice hockey, just as he did at Bullis and in college, and he now plays in an adult league in Manhattan. ’07 DOUGLASS SILVERSTEIN married Shana Silverstein at the San Ysidro Ranch in Santa Barbara, California on October 9. ’09 This fall, JONATHAN RICE began a two-year master’s degree program in professional communication at the University of San Francisco. KAQUAN LITTLE graduated from Morehouse College in Atlanta with a degree in marketing in 2015 and for the past two years has worked as a marketing communications specialist for AARP, Inc. in Washington, D.C.

’11 ALEX FRIEDLANDER had a successful first year as Bullis’ head JV football coach. Alex was also an assistant coach for the varsity football team, as well as an assistant coach for the Middle School football and basketball teams.

’12 KYLOR BELLISTRI graduated from Brown University in May with a major in business, entrepreneurship and organizations. At Brown, Kylor was a standout lacrosse player, earning All-American honors, being named a Scholar All-American and breaking the record for the most goals in a single season at Brown. Following graduation, Kylor played attack with Major League Lacrosse’s Boston Cannons. We’re thrilled to welcome SAMUEL THOMAS back to Bullis as a campus security officer. Sam graduated from the University of Maryland in May, where he received his bachelor’s degree in criminology

’13 Congratulations to BROOKE GUTSCHICK who was one of six seniors to win the Linnaean Award at Gettysburg College for contributions to the school community. Brooke is president of the senior class at Gettysburg and will graduate in spring 2017. In October, Brooke and Amy Yang ’13 hosted a panel for Bullis juniors who visited Gettysburg as part of their Experiential Education trip. NICHOLAS FIELDS was named co-captain of the Johns Hopkins University men’s lacrosse team. Nick is a senior majoring in economics and minoring in entrepreneurship and management. DAVID FIREMAN is a senior at the University of Michigan where for the past two years he has worked in the Burn Trauma and Regenerative Medicine lab, run through the Department of Plastic Surgery at the University’s hospital. The focus of David’s research in the lab is translational medical research, which benefits patients clinically.

At Florida State, Sean has also appeared in “Legally Blonde” among other productions.

’14 CAITLIN MCMAHON transferred from Jacksonville University to the University of Delaware where she joined the Blue Hens womens lacrosse team. During her freshman year at Jacksonville, Caitlin was named to the A-Sun All-Freshman Team while Jacksonville won the league championship title. Caitlin is majoring in health behavior science with a minor in strength and conditioning and intends to become an athletic trainer.

Congratulations to CAMERON BROWN who was named the first true freshman at Pennsylvania State University to post double figures in tackles since 2010.
