“My job is to help these guys figure out the difference between hurting and being hurt.” –Dr. Tandy Freeman
No matter how badly hurt, a cowboy always tries to leave the arena on his own two feet. Sometimes he needs a little help.

very time these guys (bull riders) go out there to ride,” says Dr. Tandy Freeman, “there is a realistic risk of being maimed or killed.” Freeman is the PBR’s director of medical services, and he knows what he’s talking about. Every weekend, he and the dedicated members of the PBR Sports Medicine team - Rich Blyn, Tony Marek and Peter Wang – are on the scene to tape ankles, ice lumps and save the occasional life. According to Freeman, the most frequent injury sustained on the PBR Built Ford Tough Series is a concussion. Shoulders and groins are the next most likely culprits of injury. “There’s a difference between hurting and being hurt,” Freeman says. “Hurting is when you’re sore and have the usual lumps, bumps and bruises. Being hurt is when it adversely affects a rider’s ability to compete. My job is to help these guys figure out the difference between hurting and being hurt and then help determine the best method of treatment for their injuries.”

judges
F
our judges - Jim Bob Custer, K.J. Pletcher, Chuck Lambert and Dean Wilson - have been chosen by the riders of the PBR to officiate the 2008 Built Ford Tough World Finals. It is not an easy job. From four different perspectives, they’ll be asking: How hard is the bull to ride? How high does he get in the air on the front end? Does he kick every jump? How high? How many revolutions does he spin? Does he have direction change? How well does the rider handle the bull? Is he in control? Does he spur the bull? And they’ll have just 8 seconds to answer those questions.

Cody Lambert
A
founding member of the PBR, Cody Lambert previously served as the organization’s vice president and continues to be involved today as livestock director. In that role, he personally selects the bulls for every Built Ford Tough Series event. A legendary bull rider, Lambert was inducted into the Ring of Honor in 1996. He also invented the protective vest worn by all bull riders.

Who’s Who
Matt Brenneman (Cody Lambert, Chuck Lambert)
“I really try as hard as I can to do the best job of picking bulls. If it’s down to two bulls, I pick the one I think is the best. … I think that the people I do business with respect me for that. I might not give people the answer they want, but I give them the answer that I believe. At the end of it all, that is the very best that I can do. … I don’t give special favors and I don’t expect special favors from anyone. I don’t have to worry that I owe someone something, and I just do it that way.”

Who’s Who

PBR 101
Invented by PBR Livestock Director Cody Lambert, the protective vest the cowboy wears absorbs shock and dissipates blows to the body, helping prevent injuries to the internal organs. Made of leather and thick foam, the vest is surprisingly lightweight, and is built to tear away in the event of a hooking.
Judging A cowboy must ride for 8 seconds to earn a score. The clock starts when the bull’s shoulder or hip breaks the plane of the gate. It ends when the rider’s hand comes out of his rope — voluntarily or not. Four judges rate each rider and each bull on a scale from 1-25. Those points are added together and divided in half to reach a score between 0 and 50 for both the rider and the bull. Those final numbers are then combined to reach a final ride score between 0 and 100. Any score over 90 points is considered a great ride – a “home run” of bull riding. The highest score ever earned in the PBR is 96.5, a feat accomplished by Chris Shivers, Michael Gaffney and Bubba Dunn.
A cowboy is judged on how well he matches the bull’s moves and maintains control of the ride. He cannot touch anything with his free hand. Extra points are awarded for style; spurring, for example, demonstrates good control. A bull is judged on his athleticism, which takes into account spin (right or left), direction changes (contrasted with spin, a change of direction means a switch in movement forward and backward or side to side), kick in the back end, drop in the front, height of jumps and difficulty to ride.
8 Seconds = Qualified Ride A single glove protects the riding hand from the intense pressure and friction of the bull rope during the ride.
132
PBR 101
Andy Watson (Guilherme Marchi)
The bull rope is wrapped around the bull’s chest, directly behind his front legs. Custom-made from nylon or grass, the flat rope has a leather handle braided into it that the cowboy grips. The tail of the rope then passes through the palm, behind the hand, and back through the palm. The metal bell on the bottom of the rope serves as a weight which helps the rope to fall off once the rider has released it.
Spurs help the rider maintain his balance by giving him added grip with his feet. Bull riding spurs have dull rowels (wheels) that are loosely locked into place — unlike a horse, a bull has loose skin that has a degree of “roll” to it. The spurs do not cut a bull’s hide, which is seven times thicker than human skin.
Direction Change Leather chaps protect the cowboy’s legs from both the bull and the unforgiving steel chutes. Custom-made and worth up to several thousand dollars, each rider has chaps with his own unique colors, designs and sponsor logos on them. The fringe on the sides — a traditional decorative accent — helps the rider bring the judges’ attention his legwork.
Cowboy Score + Bull Score = Ride Score Rosin is a sticky substance that provides extra grip. It comes in powder and rock form. You’ll often see cowboys rubbing it into their ropes before riding.
Andy Watson (Renato Nunes, Justin McBride)
The PBR leaves the choice of headwear up to the individual rider. Many choose to wear only a cowboy hat out of a sense of tradition, or because they feel helmets interfere with balance and vision. Often, cowboys will wear a helmet and/or mask after a particularly nasty face or head injury. The helmet is similar to those worn in hockey, with some adaptations.
Spin
The flank strap is positioned around a bull’s flank, in front of his hips. It is designed to give him a sense of timing when he bucks. A bull without a flank strap could lose his rhythm, and his bucking will become very unorthodox. The flank strap does not irritate the animal’s genitals in any way. Bulls, like people, aren’t very enthusiastic about moving around if their sex organs are in pain. And with breeders paying as much as $5,000 a straw (vial) for genetic material, it would make no sense for a stock contractor to risk the reproductive health of his animal.

Rank
-O-
Meter So just how rank are the bulls at a PBR Built Ford Tough Series event? Turns out it depends on the event. Some events see far more buck-offs than others. And by the end of the season the bulls usually get the better of bruised and bloodied-up cowboys who have been taken a beating all season long.

Scoring the World Finals
P
oints at the Finals are awarded just as they are at regular-season events: Riders receive a score for each ride, a bonus for placing in the Top 10 of each round, and another bonus for placing in the Top 10 of the event as a whole (the “average” or “aggregate”).
Bonus for placing in each round First place Second place Third place Fourth place Fifth place Sixth place Seventh place Eighth place Ninth place Tenth place
Points 400 350 300 250 200 150 100 50 25 15
The difference is that there are more bonus points available in Las Vegas – a lot more. Theoretically, a perfect performance could net 6,500 points. The closest to perfect anyone’s ever come was Mike Lee, who earned 4,821.75 at the 2004 World Finals.

T
he Challenge of Champions: The Story of Lane Frost and Red Rock." This 80-minute film covers the great duel between Frost and the great bull Red Rock. Their special seven-match series in 1988 captured the attention of die-hard rodeo fans and those totally new to the sport. Tragically, Frost, who was an iconic rodeo athlete and personality, was killed in the arena following a bull ride at Cheyenne Frontier Days in 1989. He was 25. "This is the only authorized biography documentary about Lane Frost and Red Rock," fimmaker David Wittkower stated. "Lane's family and I also believe that this is the lengthiest film to ever highlight Lane's rodeo career." The movie includes personal memories, home movie footage and photographs from professional rodeo photographers Sue Rosoff and Vern Howell. Songs such as "A Smile Like That" from Randy Schmutz and "Red Rock" by the Smokin' Armadillos add to the energy and emotion of this in-depth look at Frost's career.
Lane Frost
A Champion in the Arena –A Champion in Life
I
n 1988, the year Lane rode at his fifth straight NFR, he topped the seven-ride “Challenge of the Champions” match series against Red Rock. It was a classic duel between the 1987 PRCA Bucking Bull of the Year and the 1987 World Champion Bull Rider. Red Rock had been retired unridden in 309 attempts after the 1987 rodeo season. He bucked Lane off in their first two “Challenge” encounters in Red Bluff and Clovis, Calif., but by their third meeting — May 20, 1988 in Redding, Calif. — the gig was up. Lane had Red Rock’s number. Lane went on to win the match, four rides to three, after making the whistle in Livermore, Calif., Sisters, Ore., and Spanish Fork, Utah. (His third buck-off was in St. Paul, Ore., on the Fourth of July.) “The Challenge of the Champions was actually (16-time world champion and cowboy legend) Jim Shoulders’ idea,”
said stock contractor John Growney, who co-owned Red Rock with Don Kish. “We were at the rodeo in Poway, California, the end of 1987 and he was a co-announcer. He said, ‘You ought to put a challenge together with this bull.’ Right after the Finals that year, after Lane won the world, I didn’t wait a week to ask him if he wanted to do it. “The Challenge of the Champions was easy for the media to follow, and all kinds of press people picked it up and ran with it. People expected me to be sad when Lane rode Red Rock, and some felt like I took something away from him by allowing it to happen. But if it hadn’t been for that match, Red Rock would have just faded away. There wouldn’t have been a song (by the Smokin’ Armadillos) and a movie (“8 Seconds”) written about it. So many great things came out of that deal. Lane reached people. He had a million friends — real friends.” — Kendra Santos

or decades, one thing has been just as integral to Western lifestyle events as the dirt itself – the sponsorship of Copenhagen Bull Riding. Since 1996, the company has been involved as a national sponsor of the Professional Bull Riders. Copenhagen Bull Riding celebrates the cowboy way of life and the Western spirit with multiple PBR sponsorship components, including a title sponsorship of both the Copenhagen Bull Riding Challenger Tour and the 90-Point Club; sponsorship of official PBR After Party events, and sponsorship of bull riders J.B. Mauney, Ross Coleman and Justin McBride. The Copenhagen Bull Riding Tour features rising PBR stars competing at over 50 events held across the United States, culminating with a tour finals event in Oklahoma City. The company annually contributes to the prize money for the Copenhagen Bull Riding Chal-
lenger Tour Finals — in 2008, that included half a million dollars for the winner alone. Copenhagen Bull Riding is pleased to be a part of the continued growth of the PBR, and we look forward to bull riding’s bright future.
