s of the second week of September 2016 death toll hikes to more or less 3173 and expected to rise up to 3500, 1138 from legitimate police operations and 2035 extrajudicial or what they popularly call vigilante killings since the new administration assumes position. A small number compare to the 102,586,288 total population of our country or only about 0.0034% of the entire population but to mind you these are still human lives, that like you eat, sleep, laugh, love and are loved. The President of the Philippines always makes his stand clear when it comes to drugs, “I hate drugs” one of his famous lines in his presidential campaign ad that gave him the approval of the public, a hope and glimpse of light for a change. Yes may be all of us do hate drugs but do we really want to eradicate the dependents this way? Aren’t we supposed to hate the substances not the dependents? Are we deviating our principle taught to us by the church, the values we believe and the worth of life? I also share the belief that drug dependents are the very cause of almost every crime committed in our country, I also believe that hideous crime like rape and murder should be punished, but also I

By Michael Pangilinan believe in due process, to be put in fair trial, to be defended by a lawyer guilty or not guilty I believe it’s the right of every Filipino Citizen of this independent Sovereign country. But how can such are done if the dependants or accused are in 6 feet under state? And I quoted one of Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno statement, “The Court cannot rely on what it sees in the media”, “It is not because of shyness or reticence but because it is what the Constitution requires,” Sereno added.

Plus the vigilante killings nowadays become a normal day add up or like a sugar in a morning coffee, aren’t the lack of information and identify of the murderers yes murderers and the victim yes let me call them victim a bit intriguing? Think, imagine what if they are like you, reading this paper before this vigilante group mistook you as a drug dependent, Very unfair right? So anyone can be a pusher now? It even becomes a joke that I often use, “Wag kang man lalaban baka itumba ka”.

Does it really have to be this way? Isn’t it tiring to watch News everyday seeing lifeless bodies with bullet holes and warp with duct tapes lying on streets or News about policemen whom says that the lifeless individual fought during the operation “Nanlaban daw”. Maybe at some point few of those 1138 committed such or nanlaban nga but I don’t believe na lahat eh oo.

One of my last point before I end my editorial is did we really forgot that life is life, that we only get to have one? Isn’t it unfair that they are deprived for a second chance in life, a chance to correct the wrong of yesterday and live the promise of today and tomorrow? For those 3173 whom justice where put on the hands of the unworthy yes it is too late, so Oh mother most merciful save what can be save.

y five years of stay here in Bulacan State University become my eye opener; it gave me a wider horizon on how things are, and how it should be. A hard slap of reality, I still remember way back in high school I am considered a protégé, a talent, a seed of Shakespeare but as soon I enter the walls of BulSU I was washed out “Marunong lang pala ako”, I was just skilled not talented. It broke my arrogance, it shatters my ego, but I did not stop there, it did not dissolve the hunger within me, the hunger to be recognize, the hunger to be the best. My five years of stay here in Bulacan State University become my everyday warfare; warfare for knowledge. Warfare against the subjects that continues to seek for the value of the unknown, up to now I still wonder how I manage to pass them, some I must say I barely do so, tipong 70 passing nasa 69.40 ka I’ve been there, Sinalba lang po ng removal, warfare against the standard set by my professors that pag Engineering ka dapat mabilis ka pick up, magaling ka sa Math, maganda sulatmo, the stereo types as they call it, stereo types na kahit isa di ako pasok, warfare against myself whom until now seeks for its identity, seeking for something that I can call mine that, I can claim I am the best at it. My five years of stay here in Bulacan State University become my anvil, honed to be someone who is hard to get rid of, someone who is persistent.

Mula sa mahabang exam bago ka makapasok, pila na tatalunin ang forever sa haba para makaenroll ka up to the crowded classrooms, mga pabebeng minors na nag pupumilit maging major, problem sets na kulang pa front and back ng yellow paper para sa isang number, major examinations that will keep you awake overnight.

My five years of stay here in Bulacan State University become my anvil, honed to be someone who is hard to get rid of, someone who is persistent. My five years of stay in Bulacan State University become a journey worth taking, the struggles to pass my subjects taught me to be time efficient, to work harder than I do, yung mahabang pila sa cahsier taught me to be patient to be wise, the pressure from my peer from my co-COE students from my professor taught me to always maintain self label. I can say that my five years of stay in Bulacan State University had been worth it.Make yours even better.

s I stare into a wall while thinking unto something, a memory flashed back into my mind. Is it really okay for us to attain a grade of three or to fail during the studying period? Is it right to be compared over someone because of grades? Do we deserve to be insulted because of the almost failed subject/s? And is it proper for us to feel helpless because of our grades? College of Engineering (CoE) is one of the best colleges here in Bulacan State University. Starting from its head, professors, board passers, down to its students, you can see how it stands among the rest not just academically but of values too. CoE ensures to produce excellent Engineers. Strict rules are being implemented to achieve this goal; (1) Students who failed half of the load for the given semester shall be kicked out from the college, (2) students who failed a subject three times shall also be kicked out, and (3) Engineering courses shall be taken only for seven and a half years. From this, all Engineering students are striving harder and harder not to meet those. But at some point, some of us are being tested by certain circumstances especially when it comes to grades. Having a grade of three feels like a celebration for us but for others, they end up not appreciating that they have just passed. And hearing negative comments or insulting statements always breaks our heart. It is easy for others to criticize us because they do not know the pressure, the pain, and the emotions that are into it. Just remind yourself that you should

Just remind yourself that you should not be controlled by other’s expectations for it will not help improve and is just a waste of time. I am not saying that Engineering is the most difficult course and should be given a lot of consideration regarding with grade matters. No course is too easy or too hard. But let this be the challenge: Let us lift each other’s spirit as engineering students when we feel someone needed us no matter how hard the situation is. After all, we are all dancing in the storm and will be dry into the fire afterwards just to pass the semester so we can chase our dreams and prove ourselves and others that we are better than who we are today.

An open letter to my 25-year-old self

circuit breaker ALLEN CRUZ

I

hope you’re doing fine and I hope time has been kind to you. You wrote this letter 7 years ago because you cannot think of anything to write for a newsletter column. I wonder if you graduated on time. Or if you passed the REE board examination. But it doesn’t matter, because I know you always do your best to achieve the things you wanted. I just hope you got the job you’ve been dreaming for since you were a child. I hope you’ve somehow contributed electricity to some communities who needed it. It’s quite a tough job, but right now, I’ve been studying really hard for it. I just hope it’s enough. You have seen me outburst because of stress. You have seen my sleepless nights. You have seen me overdose with coffee. You have seen my selfish ways. So thank you for not giving up. But I won’t continue this letter with all these ambitious craps. I just hope you managed to find a way out of the friendzone. Because, bruh, being ‘torpe’ won’t take you anywhere. So if you haven’t escaped that lonely cave yet, get the hell out and ask her on a date. Also, do not forget all the struggles you’ve faced, all the failed exams and how you managed to get over it, all those ‘giving up’ attempts and how you motivated yourself to continue. Because, yeah, life will slap you in the face. Twice. Back-to-back. For seven consecutive days. I want you to remember all this, and see how far you’ve been through.

So go ahead and laugh, laugh in the face of adversity. You may have made mistakes, but that does not necessarily mean that you are not worthy. Maybe you’re laughing right now while reading this letter. Because I know failures would change you a lot. So go ahead and laugh, laugh in the face of adversity. You may have made mistakes, but that does not necessarily mean that you are not worthy. Because these mistakes honed you to what you’ve become. It may be as cliché as it goes, but you have to accept the past in order to move forward. Go out for an adventure. Do not live your life staying in front of a radiating screen. Take the road less travelled by. Because I know things will be worse than that. So I’m letting you to rest, to inhale the positivity and exhale the negativity, to meditate and then start all over again. And lastly, let this letter be a reminder that you were once weak, so if things go the wrong way, let this letter remind you that you’ve gone through all that. Just don’t forget to learn from all of this, because things may not go the way you wanted it to be, but it would surely go the way that you rightfully deserve. Love, Your younger self.

e all have that experience in which we must continue our current passage because it’s impossible to turn back. I have this notion that, Isn’t life a bit unfair? What’s done is done and that’s it, we cannot do anything about it anymore. Life is unfair, we can’t change tiny bits of wrong doings from the past no matter how bad we wanted to. As I was thinking on what to write on this column, I listed some of the possible topics like politics, social relevance, academic and the likes but none of it seems to be interesting for me. I chose to just write what ever I want and thought that maybe I can generalize what has been happening in my life in the recent events. I’ve

We will all be in the point of no return, I’m certain. Well, thank you! Hahahaha! Going back, ooops! Seems that it will negate the title, moving forward rather, there will be eyes that will stare at you, eyes that will wait for you to fail. Failing is inevitable, everyone will surely fail at some point. Everyone will get broken, get hurt and think that it will be their last day on earth. Life is full of second chances, fail and try again. We will all be in the point of no return, I’m certain. It’s for us to accept the challenge and try our best. We can’t just stop moving forward because we are afraid to do so. Life is a bridge, we just need to travel across.

ore than the exams, lectures projects and all the school works needed, there are a lot of things in life that are better understood when we step out in the four corners of our university and see things for ourselves. Being a student is tough, it is hard. But life itself is harder. We should have a better understanding of life, a clear glance of the truth. The truth that while you are enjoying a cup of overpriced coffee someone is begging for alms just to have money to buy food for his family. While you are choosing what kicks to buy someone needs to walk for miles just to be in school barefooted. We are born in this world differently. Different status in life. Some have a lot, some have some, and some have nothing. One thing could be realized, we have our own luck but we also have our free will. What’s important is that we try to move beyond that luck so we don’t let the things we can’t control take control of us. We have to exert much effort to be on top of our game. Be that “somebody” you want to be. We are the creator of our reality. Life really isn’t fair. Our idea of fairness is actually unobtainable and impossible. Thus, we should

A world of possibilities and opportunities awaits us. We should unlock the hidden potential in us. Come to think of it, if life is fair, there wouldn’t be competition, we will not strive for the best, and we’ll easily give up. We can’t see what the world has stored for us. Life is to be experienced, for us to have a deep understanding of the world. Once we accept that notion of living, we tcan make our next step… TO MOVE FORWARD.

SME: Pioneering Championship

By Benz Coronel For this year 2016, the Manufacturing Engineering department took the best on thesis award of the 2nd Manufacturing Innovation and Skills Competition (MISC) and best proposal in Manufacturing Design Proposal.

For three consecutive days the Pamantasang Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) hosted the 2nd MISC from August 18 to 20, held on SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia, Pasay City. In the said event, four colleges/universities have competed namely; University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman, Mapua Institute of Technology (MIT), PLM and our beloved Bulacan State University (BulSU).

The thesis of the fresh graduates’ dominated the event, which was authorded by Jonel Ryan Arcardo, Juny Anne Enriquez, Camille Lopez, Krishia Mae Obedeza and Christian Pagtalunan entitled “Utilization of Mytilusedilus (Marine Mussel) Shells, Scyla Serrata (Mud Crab) Shells, Crassostea Iredalei (Oyster) Shells and Fish Scales mixtures for Ceramic Tile Making,” which was presented by Rejoice Yap and Erika Joy Rivera (4th year students). For the Manufacturing Design Proposal hosted by UP Diliman held on De LaSalle University (DLSU) Teresa Yuchengco Auditorium last August 20, 2016.

The “Photovaltaic Aircondition Unit” design by Kenneth Dimacali, Lemuel Torrefiel and Robert Daniel Santiago (4th year students) was awarded as the best design proposal. The president of Society of Manufacturing Engineering (SME), Keyt Kimberly R. Hernandez congratulates the works and efforts of the people behind the triumph, “Congratulations guys, kahit na medyo hassle yung the day before ng event natin, nagawa niyo paring manalo. Kahit na bigating mga school kalabant natin di pa rin kayo nagpatalo, congrats.”

Missing: Engineering freshmen

By Anton Razon “Where are the freshmen?” – The hallway of Natividad Hall is buzzling in this dilemma. Students of college of engineering are baffled. As the institution did not admit any freshmen students for the academic year 20162017. Many of us do not know the reason behind the situation. Thanks to our college secretary, Engr. Oliver Mariano, for providing us the enlightening explanation. Given the fact that there are no graduates from high school because they are apparently enrolled in Grade 11. He also said that, “COE is trimming down its population due to lack or insufficient facilities.” Similar to the scarcity of equipment, the college secretary added “When the first

batch of K-12 graduates enroll in 2018, most of their subjects will be handled by the COE professors and not by the service college. They will be enrolling equivalent to 3rd year subjects.” Prior to the implementation of the K-12 program, our college has strategically planned this. Ensuring quality education and ample preparation for the upcoming demand in tertiary level. Truly, investing in knowledge is the answer toward reaching growth and development.

Last July 4 2016, four BulSU students of Mechanical Engineering department were sent to Gyeongsang National University South Korea for the second year of Global Korea Scholarship 2016 for ASEAN Science and Engineering Students Invitational Program which was funded by their Ministry of Education and National Institute for International Education. The students are as follows, Nikka Tiglao and Ace Patrick Ongaria, fifth year students and Daryll Tobias and Charlie Dela Torre, fourth year students. The said program was held to promote international studies and exchange student courses across its Southeast Asian neighbor ing countries and also to encourage youth to explore the beauty and culture of Korea posing between its rich history and booming economy. During the six-week intercourse, participants from Laos, Myanmar, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Philippines were accompanied to classes in relation to the field of Mechanical and Aviation Engineering. The course runs from Basic Mechanics to Complex Finite Element Methods used in injection moulding and die casting simulations. Also, it includes laboratories focussing on metal forming and industrial planning. AFDEX, an intelligent metal forming software, MAPS 3D, a plastic injection molding simulator and CATIA, a

At the end of the program, all four BulSU participants separated into three groups bagged all three places for their research proposals about metal forming presented before a panel of judges including the AFDEX developer himself, Mr. ManSoon Joun. GSK Invitational Program also offers various scholarship titles to all participants for graduate courses in their respective universities and entitles interested schools, including BulSU a 10-year agreement contract for the use of the metal forming simulator software to further enhance its students especially mechanical, industrial and manufacturing engineering students in the subject.

Road repairs to be expected

By Anton Razon Series of construction has been observed these past few months around the vicinity of our university. Major roads are being lifted to avoid drastic disaster such as floods. Paths inside the university must be elevated too, so a set of upgrades have been made. A serious problem occurred weeks after the construction. Required strength of the concrete was not achieved because of over-aged cement that was used, according to our Dean, Engr. Romeo Robles. Reconstruction must commence as soon as possible to avoid such accidents, which resulted for more inconvenience. Many students are dismayed because of the wasted materials, money and man power. The head of the Project Management Office (PMO), Arch. Parungao, clarified that “[The] contractors are responsible for the consequence, their penalty is to shoulder all the expenses needed to rebuild the roads.

Sales placed 5th at REE Board Examination By Ace Patrick Ongaria

After last year Engr. Erano Capule Dela Cruz placing 4th in REE board examination, BulSU COE has been successful to retain its reputation as a home of competitive and excellent engineers as Engr. Genesis Ermitaño Sales of batch 2015 placed 5th in the recently held September Electrical Engineer board examination. COE launches 1st Classification Examination By Mikole Avenilla

“Yun ang ating problema sa college, hindi natin ma-accommodate lahat ng may gusto ng ganong major. Meron naman silang second hanggang fifth (choice).” Dean of College of Engineering, Engr. Romeo Robles said in connection to the limited slots of every department for the incoming third year students.

Iracta of CE-3A said that he expected the exam to be like a board exam, that it will be more on computations, but it turns out that the exam is more on the topics that (he thought) should not be the focused on like the definitions. Hutch Valles, from ME-3A added that if the vfacilitators allowed the use of calculators, larger scope of problems will be solved.

Last June 8, 2016, 2nd year General Engineering students headed on a test of their knowledge. The students are required to take the classification exam after completing all the subjects from first year to second year college. The exam was conducted to see where the students will fit among the five out of eight majors they chose. The score from the examination is said to be the basis to what major the student will be placed. There were questions from 11 subjects (namely algebra, trigonometry, analytic geometry, solid mensuration, differential and integral calculus, chemistry, physics, fundamentals, statistics, and computer programming) that were included in the exam. “Ang scope nung exam lahatnung science and math from 1st year to 2nd year. Nagkaroon tayo ng data bank ng mga questionnaire, kinuha lang natin 100 pero marami yun more than 200, 300. Bago tayo nagexam, nagkaron tayo ng dry-run sa 3rd year. Binigay natin yung exam, parang mock exam. Tapos nung makuha yung resulta in-item analysis nila mam, yung in-charge (Engr. Jennie Roque, head of the committee) tinignan kung ano yung scope na nasasagot nung bata at hindi. Lahat ng nasasagot kinolek uli nila then dun namili ng exam at yun ang binigay sa battery (exam)”, explained Dean Robles.

The last question is whether the classification exam should be the basis of the majors of the examinees, they all gave an opinion that the exam is not a good reference for the major they will be at.

Why students aren’t advised to use calculator during the exam? Why is it that one of the basis for the major of a student is the classification test? When Dean Robles is asked about these, he said “Yung pinili nilang exam, lahat nung nilagay nilang problem solvable by manual calculation. Kahit may angle mga regular angle, halimbawa 30 degrees, 45 (degrees), hindi na sila gumamit ng mga hindi regular angle para manually masolve. Iniiwasan kasi yung mga naka-store sa calculator na formula. Yun ang iniiwasan.” Then he said that one of the criteria In accordance to the examination, queries to have a major is by completing the subjects for the were sent to some third year students who had taken first two years and then the ranking in the classificathe exam to see how they viewed the said event. BulSU students’ curiosity, creativity, ingenuity put into showcase By Anton Razon

Equipped. of different projects by various colleges. Equipped.Preparation Stud Photo by Diana Reyes

It is a dream come true for students that have some interesting ideas to share the world as the College of Science hosted a Science and Technology exhibit-- 1st University Science and Technology Week with a theme of “Juan Science, One Nation”. Various projects that promotes practical application for the betterment of the environment and human life are catered in the twoday event last September 19-20. Some of the inventions are from our engineering students and even post-graduate engineering studieswere proudly presented. Technology is so dynamic that it keeps on improving because our needs and demands for productivity are relatively changing. BulSU students learn by conduct

ing their own research. The process of creating a science project requires such specific steps as observation, hypothesis, analysis and conclusion. The projects presented promotes the use of renewable energy by using Earth’s gravity. Cleverly constructed for people that live in remote places to provide light in time of need. Recycling of shells from shellfishes to be the base ingredient in ceramic tiles.A quadrotor that tends to avoid obstacle, useful for unmanned surveying. A robot trainer that aims to improve teaching of robotics technology. And a study to simply a microcontroller programming, a combination of visual and textual programming.

Imagination that was once a dream. Concepts put into place. Ideas that became a useful inven tion. These are just some of the ideas that defines the diversity of engineering. A wonderful way to express the magnificent art of engineering skills. This kind of exhibit really teaches aspiring engineers to put what they learn into test and eventually into reality. Among the differences, they only stand for one purpose; that is to improve the lives of people in the very best way they can. The key to a positive experience for students is putting curiosity, creativity and ingenuity into showcase.

14 news BulSU shifts academic calendar By Jerome Macainan

The University of the Philippines, University of Santo Tomas, Ateneo de Manila University and De La Salle University are only some of the well-known universities that have already shifted their Academic Calendars. And just recently, Bulacan State University has also joined the roster of these universities, which moved the start of its school year from June to August. According to Republic Act no. 7797, school year(s) of any school, college, or university should start on the first Monday of June, but not later than the last day of August. Republic Act 7722, on the other hand, states that Universities or Colleges have the freedom to set their own opening of classes as long as it follows what Republic Act 7797 states. These two laws, hereby, support the decisions of the aforementioned universities to move the start of their school calendars. In accordance to this, we conducted a survey among engineering students about their insights and their idea(s) as to why the Administration has decided to adapt the new August-May Calendar. About 41% of the respondents say that the most probable reason of the calendar shift is due to the weather of the Philippines— saying that the Administration

moved the start of the school year is probably because the months of June and July are the peak of the rainy season and these are the months when monsoons and floods are frequent. And Bulacan, being a flood-prone area is not safe with such phenomena. Only 21% were able to state the primary reason of other universities, particularly in Metro Manila, why they have decided to move their school calendars, ASEAN Integration. 15% of the respondents say that Bulacan State University moved the Academic Calendar just to follow a trend among universities.18% are uncertain of the probable reason and 5% stated “other” probable reasons for the calendar shift. Such reasons include a “longer vacation”, so students who have to take Summer Classes may catch up. We also tried to ask if they are in favor of the calendar shift. About 50% of the respondents say that they are in favor of the new calendar shift; although some of them say that our university has adapted it too soon. Preparations and other necessary actions could have been done before deciding to pursue the calendar shift. 27% of the respondents, however, are not in favor of the calendar shift. A 5th year Engineering respondent, who is to take the Board Exams the

following year, pointed out that the new academic calendar has diminished their time to review by two months due to the fact that the schedule for the exams remains the same. 4th year respondents, on the other hand, say that less companies are open for On the Job Trainings during the months of June and July. And other respondents say that the months of March, April and May are the months of the summer season. Stating that studying under the heat, is not very helpful especially with our course. The remaining percentage neither agrees nor disagrees with the movement of our school calendar. In an interview with Dr. Edgardo M. Santos, the Vice President for Academic Affairs of Bulacan State University. We asked him for the primary consideration(s) that they have considered in adapting the new Academic Calendar of Bulacan State University. According to him, ASEAN Integration is the primary reason why the administration has decided to move the start of school year from June to August. The Academic Calendar of Bulacan State University needs to be synchronized with the Academic Calendar of universities, not only in Metro Manila, but also in other ASEAN countries. This is also in accordance to the K-12 program implemented by the

news Department of Education, so our university is now offering Grade 11 program for its Senior High School. When asked if the weather of the Philippines is of any consideration, he said that such claims are immaterial and irrelevant. Starting the school year by June or August, according to him, will not change the prevailing Climate Change. The monsoons and storms that arrive during the months of June to November and the scorching heat of the summer season are not of any consideration according to Dr. Santos. This, therefore, completely debunked the reason that about 41% of our respondents gave. The third reason given by engineering students who answered our survey is trend, so we took the chance of clarifying this to the Vice President for Academic Affairs. According to him, why would there be a need to follow a trend when the Administration is more concerned to the internationalization and globalization of our university. Trend is not and was never a concern for this decision; it is more of a perception among students who cannot cope up. He added that, with this new Academic Calendar Bulacan State University can now participate in foreign exchange programs that the old calendar restrains us. As most of the countries, not only in Asia, but also in Europe and America, classes start on August. like us.

As the interview went by, we asked him the benefits that this Academic Calendar will bring, especially for engineering students He said that this new school calendar is not going to benefit the College of Engineering only, but the university as a whole. No college in particular was considered in moving it. However, he said that this will help in reducing the classes that will be disrupted by events like the Intramurals and the Foundation Week. On the other hand, during these events, students will no longer have to worry about exams, quizzes and other class activities because by the first two weeks of December, classes are already accomplished. This calendar has also merged the Semestral Break and the Christmas Break into one, making a more time efficient and a more worthwhile Christmas vacation without worrying the unfinished class activities the following year. Also, this will reduce the disruptions caused by the two Academic Breaks. As we ended the interview, Dr. Santos, emphasized that neither the weather nor trend is of any consideration why we have a new Academic Calendar—the reasons that most of us still believe. He admitted that complaints among students are inevitable, but the administration has only made this decision for the betterment of the students. Our university has adapted the new August-May calendar in order for us to adapt into the global competition.

15

We must, therefore, comply to their decision because it will help not only our college, but our university as a whole. The same issue applies with K-12; people see it as a trend that the Philippine Government just wants to shove in our throats without seeing the benefits that it may give to us. With this new school calendar along with K-12, Philippine Diplomas will now be fully recognized in other countries. The global competition is getting tougher as the days go by. As Charles Darwin say, the strongest does not always survive, but those who learn to adapt. Most of us say that Bulacan State University is not yet ready. If that is the case, then when are we going to be ready? Change is a slow process. It starts as soon as possible, but it takes time to achieve perfection. If we do not adapt the new school calendar, then we will be left behind by the rest of the world. We will never be ready if no implementations will be made. Be that as it may, it does not matter what day or month our school calendar starts. What matters more is how we perform in class during those periods. One thing, remains as engineering students we must study hard—finishing the course is our current goal. The calendar shift will never affect our performance as students, but it will greatly help in making our university and its students be globally recognized.

The Engineers: Comeback is real By Jerome Macainan

Comeback is real as the The Engineers, the official news publication for the College of Engineering, rises back after years of being fruitless. The publication is now even more determined to make sure that every Engineering student, regardless of your department, will receive unbiased news of all the happenings in our college. Lead by Paolo Isip, the current Editor-in-chief, along with its members from different departments of Engineering, the publication is going to make sure that a comeback and a re-establishment is never too late. But why is there a need for the College of Engineering to have its own publication? Why can we not just depend on the paper released by the university publication? Our college needs a publication, simply because there are trends and news that peak the interest of Engineering students only. The The Engineers is here to make sure that such news will reach every department and every year level. Another thing is that the publication of specific colleges, like ours, exists because the university paper will not be able to feature every news of every college in our university. Such news includes the milestones and achievements by our college and its students like board pass

ers, quizzers, organizations and even those who participate in the Intramurals, Foundation week and other events. The re-established publication is now sworn to produce newspapers on a regular basis, this will be the main difference from the previous The Engineers. The previous years of the publication is somewhat harsh for its members. Due to lack of funds and other necessities, the publication was not able to cater the entire populace of our college. That also affected the release of issues of the publication. For years, lapses were inevitable because of the aforementioned cause. So as part of its re-establishment, the publication made plans to manage such dilemma as well as other dilemmas that affect our production. Just recently the The Engineers conducted a survey, with the approval of Dean Robles, to know how many engineering students are in favor of having a tuition fee raise of fifteen to nineteen pesos. This is in accordance to the request of the publication to have a raise to help it in rebuilding itself. A small amount that will and may help in the regular production of newspaper in the College of Engineering. Not only that, the publication also aims to ex

pand its scopes from newspapers to literacy folios and tabloids. So far the survey results turned to our favor, but its approval will be on the administration’s hands.Certain complaints with regards to the lapses were raised, so some students decided not to sign. But this also helped us in knowing the problems that they can see in our publication. Such knowledge will help us in improving it further. The The Engineers is here to make sure that everyone of us is well-informed because an oblivious man is a dead man. We cannot just let our five years in our course go by without knowing the things that happen in the corners of our building as well as the people in it. Knowledge is power, it sets us above others. Knowing what is happening around us, makes us more keen, it makes us aware. As for now we are in dire need of everyone’s help to cater the entire engineering population with news that is factual as well as accurate. As the phoenix that is set ablaze to be reborn from its ashes, the The Engineers is being rebuilt from its old self. We have a greater determination to improve and fix the things that we lack.

Lost Flame by Ruce Archivido Our beginning was a perfect ride. Long night drives and city lights, Sweet kisses and red wines All shared moments were the best ones We were on a good road ‘til we hit a bump Distance sucks as how others would hum I didn’t know longing can get me numb I just believe we can make it through the rough One little road bump is enough, I guess Took us a while to survive the steepness Shaken but not hopeless Love conquers all, she always says. We keep on pacing on the rocky side I felt weak when you once said, “is it worth it?” I said all the loving words for you feel at ease You nodded but your eyes didn’t agree

Liter

I kept trying to bring back the flame To ignite the feeling that got tamed I woke up one day not feeling the same There’s something distant in your voice when you called out my name. No matter how I hard I fought the battle If your hands choose to hold another Even if I build a gold-filled castle Everything will never get any brighter As I wait for the morning to come each day I wonder if the dawn was stuck at bay? For a while, I thought the pain would never flush away Will you still come back if I choose to stay? Despite the rigid road and circumstance, I contemplate how I was still able to stand I don’t know what else to keep me sane Until now, I went on loving you just the same.

I want to forget you, I really do But inside my head it was always you Like a bullet you hurt me Like a knife that truly cuts me How can it be? That you can just forget me Forget me like nobody Like there’s nothing between you and me I am crazy, I know I am But how can I stop this? How can I? I thought I’ve forgot you But it’s just a thought… For I still do remember you I know this is too much I know I am too much How did I let this? Why did I let you hold me like this?

Mr. Smiley by Rosczina Suzana But here I am still thinking, still seeking Still reminiscing, still expecting, still waiting Still missing, still loving Loving you, Loving you, Loving you Missing you, Missing you, Missing you What else can I do? It’s what my heart’s telling me too Maybe now you’re happy, and here I am feeling lonely Still meditating, the pain you have caused me Maybe I am missing you lately, missing you baby Loving you sincerely, still loving you dearly But it’s just a maybe between you and me A “maybe” that’s simply not for you and me Goodbye Mr. Smiley, and I hope you’ll never ever see This love I have that once made me happy

Those memories that we had Those times that you are sad Those lines that made me glad Those smiles that changes everything bad All of those are gone, all of those are none

Stealer By Ana Loraine D. Baez You were a cloud nine stealer. You stole everything I have—from the joy of having my high school classmates with me up to the rest and me-time. Ever since I got into you, it’s either I spend the night wondering on how to get through you or don’t sleep at all because I am too dumb to understand you. My life really have changed since the day I have decided to be with you, stealer. I was hesitant upon taking you. I was actually forced. My parents want you so bad and I have to take risk on you. It was my fourth year with you and it was really amazing that I can withstand the pressure you are pressing towards me. I don’t know if I was just used to it or because I am starting to love you. I expected you to be difficult—it was obvious and not that hard to notice. Some eyes widely open when they hear your name and be amaze that I am with you. Some says I should continue and pursue you because you are the greatest one I could ever have. But I never expected to be with you this far. One night, I heard you whispering something—“We have to stop, we cannot make it.”I stopped and felt the cold breeze of December wind.

Liter

The night you said that you want me off—I nearly died. I was not prepared in leaving you, I sucked in leaving and I never had an idea about that, too. I believe that you are the greatest one that I will ever have so I did not let you go. I held you up so tight that sometimes it really hurts so much. It was my sixth year with you and the people around me grow weary. They kept on asking me if I was never tired about you. They grew impatient that some of them want me out. Some wants me to leave you and go find another one. There were nights that I cried too much because I cannot bear the pain that you are causing. Funny it is that they talk like you are a hot potato and you are too easy to be dropped off. My seventh year with you came like a hurricane. I thought I will never survive you. All this time, I thought you stole everything but it was not true. I was wrong because all this time, you are handing me the greatest one I could ever have. I was so happy that finally, after seven years, you were the first thing to be seen in my name—Engr.

The Mission of Demise By Julie Rebanal

“Here’s the list of dead people you need to deal with. Make sure it’s done before another full moon comes.” a man in black said which I assumed was one of the leaders. He handed me a golden book with carved letters of the word “Death” in the cover. I took the book, opened it and saw different names of human beings together with their birthdays and age. There are atleast 20 people in the list and the other pages of the book are reserved for the information about their next lives. My mission was given to me when the leaders found out that I had a gift called premonition back when I was alive. I don’t know if it was a gift or a burden because it doesn’t work for me. I mean, what’s the sense of knowing who’s going to die if you can’t save them? I never even got a chance to save myself either. Back to the story, the leaders gave me options. My options are to have new life or to work as a reaper, a guardian, or an oblivion. My first choice was an oblivion. Being a reaper means savage and ruthless while being a guardian means canty and emphatetic; and if either of the two is your job, you can’t talk to the souls because all you’re going to do is to observe them and guide them to their own paths. I chose to be an oblivion because I got to talk with the souls. I help then let go of their old lives, cut all the attachments and move on. I’m contented with my job for long a time, but not until I met someone.

My last soul encounter is a boy who sacrificed his own life. He ran across the street when he saw a little girl crossing the road in front of a running vehicle. He has a honey blonde hair and a pair of eyes hued like the color of the ocean. Every time I look at those pair of ocean eyes, the butterflies in my stomach gone wild. In a nutshell, I fell inlove with him. It was us against the world because I broke a golden rule of the mystics. It took us almost half a decade in human time before we finally end up together without anyone opposing us. We’d gone through a lot of tests before they finally allowed us to love each other. One of the tests that was given to him was choosing to have a new life on earth instead of being stuck as a lost soul. I was surprised that he chose to be with me rather than to resurrect and have a new life on earth. Now, we’re part of The Guardians. We guided the souls after they were being reaped by The Reapers and took them to The Oblivions. It’s a lot easier than I’ve expected because we got a chance to work together as partners. I woke up dead and lost. I was once an oblivion, and now I’m a guardian. I’ve been in love and I am here with him and we will help to you to move on. Live your life folks as long as you have it. We were still watching and waiting. Even if you’re ready or not, one day you’ll meet us and we’ll guide you to your own destined path.

I was an assistant treasurer back then. I did my best to accomplish my responsibilities. Until one day, I realized I am being boxed by my position. I know I can do and contribute more that’s why I stepped out my box. I believe that it is not about the role but the goal. I initiated helping my co-officers. I get to experience their roles and learned a lot of things. These completely get rid of my box and became an advantage towards others that you must know every detail about the organization. I was able to easily adapt and manage any situation. I can effectively serve my co-ECE and share them my learnings. Maybe, they saw my potential to responsibly lead the organization. I am able to inspire and help them step forward into growth, get rid of their own boxes, and set out to make a difference.

One Big Dream for the Organization *IECEP BulSU SC is forming valuable relationships that aim to inspire each other to believe in themselves. It is to give them courage to unleash the greatness they already have inside that will eventually lead them to their own success. Because the success of each and every ECE is the success of IECEP and this is the success our team have always dreamed of. Best Organization Practice *IECEP Echosem -It is a one day event that includes leadership training in the morning and team building in the afternoon. The participants are unified into teams. In the first activity, we share to everyone our experiences where we gained a lot of knowledge and wisdom which formed us to the person we are today. We get to learn from the differences of each other that help us to improve ourselves. In the second activity, we are given tasks and challenges. We are able to apply and share what we learned among our teams. Together, we turn can’t into can and from can into can do more. At the end of the day, we are able to build valuable relationships committed in helping one another to grow together and overcome every challenge. Message to All the Subordinates: *I am very proud of you, guys. I appreciate all your efforts to do your responsibilities above expectations and your sincere and strong urge to serve IECEP. Thank you for the solid kinship among us. You are not just a team, but my family. You inspire me to be better and make a difference. Success is never difficult because you are always with me. I am always here to help and support you. Again, I am very proud of you! God bless IECEP.

* Maybe I’m the one who has the courage to face every challenges the org may encounter, especially CHANGES. One Big Dream for the Organization * To lead and inspire together( not just us officer but also our members) in EXCELLENCE Best Organization Practice * We practice ourselves on how to be more competitive Engineers outside. We know that as Engineer, one must be good at design. We use design thinking approach in different challenges that we are facing. So what is design thinking? It is a design process that enables us to solve complex problems, and it combines deep end-user experience, systems thinking, iterative rapid prototyping and multi-stake holder feedback to guide us through the successive stages in our design. To make it even clearer, our organization is conducting yearly the Robotics Competition (ROBOCOM), which includes our 3rd year-5th year members. They are required to build their own robot that will fit to the type of competition (e.g.: racing). So where is the Design Thinking approach? It can be found in planning: First, the environment where the robot will function, then formulation of ideas that we can get through observations and interviews, next is prototyping, and lastly is the testing. In that way we know that our products (robots) are better. Message to All the Subordinates * We can do it TOGETHER.

The leadership lessons I’ve learned as a servant leader are the same things I try to do/apply as a student leader, and are the very same things I’m trying to pass on to build the next generation leaders of our organization. One Big Dream for the Organization * To unite the members and make the PSME BulSU SC an organization every member would be proud to be a part of. Best Organization Practice * We try our very best to involve all members in making decisions for the organization. Message to All the Subordinates * Thank you for entrusting the organization upon our leadership. We will do our best to lead you and serve you, all year long. Whatever we do, we are doing it for all of you. We are not just your PSME Officers; we are also your friends. You can always talk to us and we will always be here for you. God bless PSME.

Advantage towards others that ran for that Position

* I don’t see any advantages of being a president but rather privileges and learning. You can meet a lot of people and learn how to socialize, your leadership skills improve, your emotional stability becomes better and being wise in terms of decision making. There might be lot of “perks” but at the end of the day, we become leaders not because we are seeking for benefits but because we wanted to serve our people.

One Big Dream for the Organization

* Ensure that our fellow students get the leadership and engineering training they deserve, inside and outside the university in order to bring out their promising potentials and capabilities. Best Organization Practice * This is not really planned or what, but the best org practice that we had in EE is that when our students do having a hard time in their subjects, our quizzers or any concerned students scheduled a tutorial class for them to understand the topic of a particular subject. Message to All the Subordinates * What more can I say to my fellow EE students? Haha. Hmmm, If engineering gives you lemon, crush them! Don’t let that lemon get in your way! Go and make your dreams come true! LOL But for now, just enjoy your remaining years / days in college because you’ll probably going to miss it. Let’s make our department proud and loud! Unleash the Horsepower! Go Red Stallion!

Ronna Liza D.L. Clemente

President, Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers

Course *BS Civil Engineering Age * 20 Years as part of Organization Officer * Almost 3 years Advantage towards others that ran for that Position *‘‘It is a curious thing, Harry, but perhaps those who are best suited to power are those who have never sought it. Those who, like you, have leadership thrust upon them, and take up the mantle because they must, and find to their own surprise that they wear it well.” –JK Rowling, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows I will not call it an advantage because everyone has the courage and the cleverness to be a leader. I’ll call it a mix of determination and luck. I never thought of having this position at first, but maybe that’s the way things happen, you just realized it’s there and you have to go and make a decision. One Big Dream for the Organization * My one dream for PICE BulSU-SC is to host an annual Quizzers Competition which will be participated by colleges and universities across Region III and NCR. This event will be a giant leap for the organization and I believe that we are ready for this. Hopefully, the PICE BulSU-SC can proceed with this Quizzers Competition soon through the help of the whole organization and the whole of the Civil Engineering (CE) Department Faculty.

Best Organization Practice * One of my favourite CE traditions is the Convergence. From the name itself, it aims to connect and form unity among all CE students. This activity is participated by the 3rd year students as the apprentices and the higher year levels as the masters. For two weeks, an apprentice will follow tasks given by the masters in exchange for their signature. No need to worry because all tasks are based on the list provided by the PICE BulSU-SC. Some of the tasks are solving mathematics problems and writing all formulas or telling knock-knock jokes and showing talents. The good thing about Convergence is you can help yourself explore new horizons of friendship and you can get out of your comfort zone. Who knows? Maybe our 3rd year apprentice will find a new character of themselves they never knew before. Message to All the Subordinates * We are very lucky for having the CE students who continuously support our endeavours. In behalf of all the officers and board members of PIC E BulSU-SC, I would like to thank every student who participated in the Annual Quizzers Elimination, Civil Engineering Orientation and Bridge Building Competition. You are the reason for every successful event that we had. We are preparing more events that will benefit all students of our department. I hope to see more of you in the upcoming activities and events of our organization! Kudos, Civil Engineering!

Daisy Celyne V. Asilom President, Philippine Institute of Industrial Engineers

Course: *BS Industrial Engineering Age: *21 Years as part of Organization Officer *2 yrs Affiliates aside from Org: *Alto1 in Koro Inhinyero *Lector/Psalmist at Sta. Isabel of Hungary Parish *Cluster Coordinator in Bible Apostolate

Advantage towards others that ran for that Position

* I may not be one of smartest in our block, but what makes me exceptional is my attitude - towards others and towards my work. In whatever I do, I’m passionate in doing it. The reason I ran for presidency is because I love to serve my IE family. I always think/want what’s best for them.

One Big Dream for the Organization

* My big dream for the org is for it be recognized as one of the most competitive department. That when you say IE, you also mean excellent and efficient. Best Organization Practice * For me, the highlight of the Industrial Engineering department is its Affiliates which acts depending on the field of expertise of the students. Such affiliates are IEntelligent, IExtension, IExplore, IEducate, IEmensity, IEnvest, IEnteractive, IE Dance Troupe, IE Falcons and the Koro Inhinyero. These aim to attain the holistic being of every students – that they will not just excel academically but also in other relevant aspects. Message to All the Subordinates * Hello IEs! Just keep the fire burning. I know you are all great individuals. And together, we can obtain our heart’s desires for our department.

Lovely Grace B. Zaballa

President, Institute of Computer Engineers of the Philippines Student Edition

Course * BS Computer Engineering Age * 20 Years as part of Organization Officer * 3years Affiliates aside from the Organization * Vice President for External - ICpEP.SE Region 3.

Advantage towards others that ran for that Position

* Actually, I don’t want to run for president but people pushed me to run for it because they think I can handle our organization. They think that I am responsible for those activities that we have and I allot much effort and time to accomplish one thing. People around me at school see that I can be a good leader for our organization. As a leader, you must be punctual and active in the organizational activities. And form that, I think that was my best shot.

One Big Dream for the Organization

* I think all Presidents are dreaming for their organization to be on top in all activities and competitions. I will not deny it that I’m praying for our organization to be on top. We all know that some people criticize our abilities as an Engineer because we don’t have a board exam. So I’m praying for our organization to prove to others that even we don’t have board exam, we have one of a kind abilities/talents that some engineering courses don’t have. Best Organization Practice * Our assembly since 2015 is Team Building. We call it CpE Fest. And as far as we know, we are the first org to do that kind of assembly.

Message to All the Subordinates

* To my subordinates, for us to be able to be the best organization/course in our college, all we have to do is collaborate with one another. We need teamwork in our organization for us to be productive. Each of us has a role in our organization. Every challenge in the organization, we should be all together. Organization is nothing without its members. So for my subordinates, let us start to stay strong every semester, and finish it stronger.

Storm is coming. By Ace Patrick Ongaria

he winds are growing big. The ground is quivering against the gloom. The sky is turning gray and dull. The storm is coming and across the fields are our tiny companions prepping for their one act to conquer the enemies. The storm is coming. Few more weeks before the annual Intramurals, we come across the thought to check out out athletics team on how are they doing. Without any pressure, they were asked on how to bring home the golds and pride for our beloved COE. “Last year was a blast. Biglang nagsulputan ang mga magagaling na freshmen badminton players around Bulacan and divided themselves in different colleges. And because of that, last year’s Intramural has been the “Most Competitive Badminton Tournament of All time”. Proudly we got the runner up”, according to Mary Anne Fernando who has been playing badmintion since her second year. “Still the competition is not yet over. Mahirap pa rin manalo na parang mahirap talagang ipasa ang DE na parang sya, mahirap nang ibalik pa. Hahaha lol.” Their dedication for the college is huge knowing that they have to balance between co curricular and extracurricular activities. Though, their top priority is still to perform good in the class. “Ayun looking forward parin kami for the next intrams. At ibibigay ulit namin yung best namin, pero siyempre hindi magiging balakid yun sa pag aaral namin. Proper time management lang,” said the Red Antz Futsal player Fritzie Isabel. During hay times, players were advised to go training especially during weekends. Good thing is that, their coaches are also encouraging their players to consider first their grades before games. “Kapag may exam kinabukasan nag papaalam ako and they will understand naman. Keep in mind that studying is our main purpose why we’re here,” Mary Anne added.

Red ants are coming. Amidst every sweat they shed and tiring schedule, Red Antz players are still looking forward to their bonding together. “Masaya,” Jennica said describing her time with her swimming team. “Sobrang enjoy kasi bukod sa gusto ko yung ginagawa ko mas napapasaya dahil sa mga bondings kasama ng mga ka teammates ko pag training.” Also, she shared to us that half of their training fee were once shouldered by the university, “Pero ngayon hindi ko alam, wala naman yun samin ‘eh. Mahalaga gusto namin yung ginagawa namin kasi ang hirap din naman pag puro aral lang. Pampasaya din ‘to ng college life. Hahahaha.” With the dedication on their craft, COE representatives not only tackled physical exhaustion, even the burden of technical ssupports. As Mary Anne shared their circumstances, “While we were in training sessions madalas nauubusan kame ng supply ng shuttlecock and the court fee.” She also asked our fellow engineering students for an effort, “Please support our badminton team. Let’s go REDANTZ!” The Red Antz of the college is now on full blast for the upcoming big event. As of now, tryouts were being held to assure a more competitive batch of players to represent the Engineering students, ready to face the harsh winds approaching. As the ground begins to tremble, our firm players manage to keep in pace with the beat and as the sky grows darker and thicker, our little but tough companions grow bigger and bolder. The storm is yet to come. Red Antz is coming.

Irregular?

Irregular.

B

akit?

First name Ateng/Kuyang, Surname, Irreg.

“Wala. Inis lang ako.” Sabi nya na tila ‘yun nga lang talaga ang dahilan.

Sino ba naman gusto maging salingkit lagi? Yung hindi ka naman talaga belong sa classroom feeling. Tapos pag may inside joke, tatawa ka, “HAHAHAHA! Ano ‘yun?

No if’s. No but’s. Irregular. Not being or acting in accord with laws, rules, or customs. Not following a usual procedure. Not belonging to or a part of a

Meaning pa lang. Sino ba gusto maging irreg? Never naging option ang maging isang irregular.

Four words: Hindi ka na gm-an. Lumipat na ng room. Nawalan na ng klase. Ipi nasa na yung homework. Nagququiz na sila. Ikaw? Inosente. Walang malay. Nganga.

Hindi totoo yung kantang “All you need is Pagibig”, maybe we all need pag-ibig, but not only pag-ibig, you also need diploma.

The stage of denial. They won’t admit na either nagkulang sila Artwork by Richard Santiago or tinamad. Mga estudyanteng inaasa lahat kay Lord. Nagdadasal nga, di naman nagrereview. Ang sabi nga, “faith without action is dead.” “Na INC, nag lapse, nairreg.” Sino ang dapat sisihin? A. Estudyanteng kinapos sa requirement pero naayos naman B. Prof na nag INC na hindi mahanap pero atleast di ka agad siningko C. System ng school na inusenteng nag aantay lang ng input pero singko ka na sa record nya D. all of the above

“Suicide Squad.”

The person who follows the crowd will probably be lost in it. Unfriend na ‘yan. “It’s not you, it’s me.” Kase nakakatamad? Di ba mas nakakatamad pag magaaral ka

pa

sa bakasyon? Kung ako sayo, aral now, para walwal later. Di yung walwal now, walwal later, exam now, iyak later. “Family x Financial.”

Na kaya mo makasurvive inspite of your situation. Let the problem problem the problem.

And also, I felt like a living reminder sa room. I’m a walking “wag moko tularan signboard.” I always take life on a positive note. A positive input has an expected positive output. I’ve grown more independent. PRIDE, HONOR, DIGNITY. Proud irreg na may honor at dignity. “Ano yung goal mo? To pass or to learn?” tanong ko sa pamangkin ko. “To pass.” Sagot nya. “Mali ka. Dapat to learn.”

To all students who are confused, your goal here in school is to learn. And your goal in your board exam is to pass. “Dapat yang goal mo, to learn, not to pass.” Two words, Nag-aral ako.

Everybody deserves to learn, but others need to learn the hard way. Tahakin mo yung daan na kailangan mo. Tignan mo kung saan ka mas matututo. Walang pipigil sayo. Wag mo ibukod yung sarili mo like an outcast. Siguro paminsan minsan mararamdaman mo na hindi ka belong, pero okay lang yan kase, you belong to yourself. Do not underestimate yourself. Totoo yung Ph 4:13. Magdasal ka. Kumain ka. Matulog ka. Mag-aral ka. Irregular. Synonym: Deviant. Different from what is considered to be normal.
