The rain after years of drought. After two years of absence in the national finals scene, Luzon made sure to leave a lasting reputation after two teams from Bulacan State University (BulSU) College of Engineering (COE) were hailed as the champion and second runner-up at the Philippine Startup Challenge 2016 held at Pueblo de Panay, Roxas City, Capiz, April 20-23. Organized by the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and Philippine Software Industry Association (PSIA) the competition aims to help students develop their research to potential

startups which can progress as successful ventures in the future. “One of the best things this competition taught us is the fact that the Filipino youth has a huge role to play in nation building. Not as employees but as future leaders who can build their own companies through the use of technology,” shared Kevin Facun of BSECE 5A, team leader Team Juanpiece. More than 250 teams all over the country joined the said contest with unique startup ideas solving real life social problems. Team Juanpiece won first place with their project Milktrack which aims to help save dying babies

confined in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit by providing constant supply of breastmilk. Meanwhile, team Trasean with their project TRASE envisions to create a competitive workforce by ensuring both professionals and non-professionals alike were granted quick link to possible seminars and trainings to earn them CPD points. Engr. Dennis Dela Cruz, on the other hand recalled his experiences as both mentors of the two teams. “Hanggang ngayon ‘di talaga ako makapaniwala. 02 OPINION EDITORIAL HALF BAKED NOTICE: LET’S GET DEPARTMENTALIZED

F

or this 21st century, still, the credibility of a person can not be written nor be answered by just couple of test papers, specially the makers (instructors/ professors) and the takers (students). The intelligence quotient (IQ) of an individual measured by answering questions on papers, is not that too reliable.

can still do the same type of exam like in the midterms. These days which lies on the second week of December, shall just be for examinations and none of discussions both lectures and laboratories. It is made for the reason of knowing if the instructors do really teach his students, by simply regulating this cover to cover exam.

Last semester, 5th- 9th day of December 2016, a new order was followed by all colleges of the wellbeloved Bulacan State University, including the College of Engineering. Wherein each department should conduct the first Departmentalized Examination. Departmentalized Examination (DEx) is an examination where all sections of the same course, year and level should take their major subjects in the same period of time. As said, only the major subjects are obliged to follow the order; and the minor ones

This grumption move truly has a good reason but still it has a lot of subtle holes. “For every rule there’s always an exemption.” Since most of the same subjects are being educated by different instructors, the test is reliable. But, for those major subjects teach by a single instructor, it’s not that trustworthy. If this instructor handles 3 sections having same subjects, and one his section failed; does it truly states that this professor doesn’t go in that class to teach? Apparently, it’s absurd --- not fair and square. For

the students, it’s a conundrum because their instructors had already given their grading system excluding the DEx, since from the opening of the sem. Considering it’s not included, the tendency students might not review their lessons, therefore the instructors will carry the burden. To eradicate this possibility, they treat DEx as one of their quizzes or additional points. On the other side, this havoc can lead to possible positive results seeing it’s the first time to be introduced. In as much as its aim is to test the instructors, all the idle will progressively do their job. If it was properly announced before or during the semester starts, there would be no complications and if there’s, it would be minimal. In Bustos Campus, the engineering department always administer their departmentalized exams in midterms and finals, where all the general engineering students gather on one roof, called Hangar. And there’s no extraneous problem occurring because it was completely prepared by them. Make sure the availability of proctors, for some cases there are exams taking place in different classroom and floors but having with a single proctor. To take the bull by the horns, in this cases, proper and early announcements and executions must take place. And in the end of the day, discipline is what we need. This order may not take long. When that moment comes, the sluggish instructors will go back to their cubicles let the students learn by themselves in all the times.

CONCISE VERBOSITY Paolo Isip Editor-in-chief

s I was fighting my writers block on what to put on this portion of the newsletter, realization struck me that this is the last column I will be doing for this publication, so why not write an open letter to my readers, our readers, and future readers of The Engineers. Let me start with my story. I am the Editor-inChief (EIC) of this publication that you can consider as the accidental one, the one who is not that talented yet weighted with such responsibility. I was not the first choice neither the third but the last resort. I’ve started from scratch. Doubts of my capability become my strength in re-establishing this publication. I’ve started rough, my predecessor left me nothing but a fading publication name, a blotting ink suits as the best metaphor. I was kicked out of our own office, room 404 the home of the people who took a 5 year suicide degree working to prove writing is also for Engineers too is robbed from me, from us, the base to meet and melt ideas. I heard criticisms, mocks, and bad mouthing especially when we published our first issue. But I always remind myself on why I accepted this post, why I continue to fight despite the bent ideology of many, I stand high and always remind myself, my staff, and everyone who knows how hard we work in The Engineers, that “We do this out of the love of writing, out of the love of freedom, and out of the love and service to the Engineering students”. To you who is reading this, the portion where you read “Our readers” our doesn’t mean me and the current staffs what I meant was our as in you as our future staff. I am writing in hopes that I would persuade you to also write, draw, capture; news, ideologies, and facts that would not only nurture you but as well as our fellow engineering students so that there would be “Future readers” who would not only hear that the college of Engineering had once have a publication. Future readers that would also aspire to write, draw, and capture to be able to inspire future readers to become our readers.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN “We do this out of the love of writing, out of the love of freedom, and out of the love and service to the Engineering students” As I come to the end of writing this letter for you, I was also near the end of my term, end of my 5 years struggle towards the orange hooded toga that you also handle to achieve. I bid you farewell thank you for reading my last column, and hoping for your favourable response towards my request. Sincerely John Paolo A. Isip Editor-in-Chief, The Engineers 16-17

Losing someone you love is hard, but living each day without them is the hardest. It’s been years since you left us, but it feels like it was just yesterday. With every year, with every holiday, with every birthday and celebration, it is clear that you are actually never coming back. Not a day goes by that I don’t look at your picture and smile or cry, thinking what if you’re still here with us, maybe everything is fine, but thinking all of those is meaningless not having you here with us. Words cannot convey how much I wish you were still here. I miss your voice, Your smile, Everything about you And I miss you more than you’ll ever realize. You have so many plans for the future, but obviously God’s plan for you is much bigger. I know heaven rejoices in welcoming an angel like you. I may have lost someone I truly love but I know, I also gained the most wonderful guardian angel heaven has ever seen. I know you’re at peace now and I know you’re flying free with the Creator. really want to be completely honest without being extremely exaggerated about my story but maybe that’s really what college life is ”Extremely Exaggerated”. I guess, this will not be a typical story were college became my eye-opener to the corrupted world and out of my pathetic mind, and definitely not a story were it was too hard to bear so I kind of came to the point where I feel like giving up. So, let me first tell you that this story is very short but takes a lot of years to be createdand it is all about lies and shame and yes, being blunt and terribly honest about it is pretty challenging for me but since it’s my last year, it gives me the assurance and motivation that you will never see me again in this campus and will totally forget about it. So, all the mess pretty much started when I kept my mouth shut when I failed my Differential calculus subject back when I was on my second year, and I wasn’t able to take the special class to cover the shit up. Obviously, all the classes that should be taken after it was blocked and there was 6 subjects leaving me with 3 subjects for the next semester and entirely delaying me for a year. It was hard because it was the first time and definitely not the last. The whole process of being dishonest about my educational disposition is dragging me down and making me feel ashamed of myself because; 1.) I was the only one in our family who went to college and 2.) I was an honor student during my primary education, so they are expecting a lot from me, and 3.) I never told anyone even my friends. So, I carried this baggage loaded with lies because like I said, it was not the first and definitely not the last. So, adding 2 delayed years with 5 sums up to 7 YEARS. And you wanna know why I received an honorary delayed year again? Because I failed my class again and the special classes wasn’t ap-

And finally konti nalang after 7 years all my hardworks and shames pays off. So if I had a chance to either go back in the past and change one thing, cliché man pero ang isa sagot ko ay wala. Because honestly, I would repeat the same life over and over again because I love what I have right now and I wouldn’t ask for more. And also, because one of my greatest principle in my life is that “It doesn’t matter how slow you GO, as long as you do not STOP”.

Twenty minutes. Ten minutes. Five minutes. “Psssttt.” Someone caught my attention. Little by little, I turn my head towards it. “Number 20?” I looked on my paper and realized it was a giveaway question. I hesitated to answer and finalized my solution. “Number 20!” I ignored it. One minute left. Someone’s tapping my chair. Forty five seconds left. I boxed my answer and give in to the voice behind me, “14.53 meters.” The time is up, I finished the problems, and I answered someone’s query. All was well. Only I have one little thing, it was not the correct answer. The answer should be 14.53 centimeters. At the cost of our daily existence, I am opting in realizing would I be good or evil? The Certainty of a Schrodinger’s Cat

“We cannot please everyone. In the very expense of our living, we always do what we think is right.” bida of this telenovela of interwoven lives? Someone who was doing everything acceptable to our social standards? Or am I against the flow of goodness? That kontrabida who was secretly grinning on another’s miserable back as the story comes along with my plans? This is the struggle: morality is absolute, ethics is relative. Our personal perceptions of what is right and just defines the farther and the common denominator of individual moral interpretations and what the society wants to see describes the latter. It is probably not possible for morality and ethics to be perfectly aligned. Though, their overlapping values make up the legal system of every society. These enable us, humans, to be perfectly Schrodinger’s

cats—dead and alive at once—in our own ways. We can never be either absolute good or absolute evil. We exist as both. We can make things we consider as personally and socially right. Somehow, we do things which are good in our perspective though the society sees it as unethical. We cannot please everyone. In the very expense of our living, we always do what we think is right. I never reached out for those street children and people asking for donations. I always doubt. Are they good or bad? Are they saying the truth? Is there any chance that they are con-artists? Just to end my speculations, I never give. If I wanted to offer help, I always make sure everything is legitimate and good as well.

Should I be evil? I am denying it. For some reasons, personal reasons, I think I did what is right. Period. It was neither because of selfishness, greed norindifference. Maybe it was? It doesn’t matter. If I have the time to study, so have they. I have my money because my family is working hard to earn it. Maybe they should also try. Maybe they should take a step forward. The conquest is usually fair. At the end of the day, what make sense is that, at least, we try to be lesser evil. As we exist as both good and bad, we can work things to be better, weighing things right. Maybe we can create our versions of Schrodinger’s cat which biases on the better half. The certainty of our coexistence depends on our perception, again. It was relative. It was actually uncertain. Diverging versions of our cats enables huge possibilities, huge range to live within. It all depends on our individuality. I was deluged by a system See on page 15..

COE celebrates 8th annual Engineering week by Mikole Avenilla

Keeping the fire burning. Photo by Mark Louis Buenaventura. “Sa kabila ng ating pagkakaiba tayo’y nagkakapare-pareho ng layunin”, said Engr. Romeo Robles in his speech during the opening of the 8th Annual Engineering Week with a theme of - Unity and Camaraderie: The Language of a Diverse COE-mmunity held last December 13, 2016. Every year, the College of Engineering gives a twist in celebrating this event. This year though, the college goes international. Aside from proving that engineering students doesn’t only have the brains but also the looks through its best muse competition, there is also the miss COEnternational pageant for this year. Each department represents a certain country and shows their wits in the question and answer portion. Emerging from the pool of nine beauties from each departments (CE Green Vipers, CpEYellow Lycans, ECE Purple

Dragons, EE Red Stallions, GE Gold Minotaurs, IE Pink Falcons, ME Blue Bisons, MEE Gray Dolphins, MFE White Tigers) the representative from CE green vipers won as this year’s muse. On the other hand, for the Miss COEnternational, the representatives from MFE, IE and ECE won as the second runner-up, first runner-up and Miss COEnternational respectively. Aside from the brainy and beautiful ladies of the College, the hip-hop competition is one of the highlights during the opening of the Engineering Week. As COE goes international, ME, ECE andEE emerge as this year’s top three winners. Adrianne Cariño of ME-5A, one of the members of the champion team is asked of what it feels like after finally winning the crown after weeks of preparation for the event, “Sobrang saya kasi diba

matapos lahat ng hirap, pagod tsaka syempre dasal ayun nag bunga rin”. The team’s last win is dated the year before the ECE purple dragons took two consecutive championship wins. For this year’s celebration, Dean Robles said that almost half of the first semester, each organization leaders started planning for the event. “Every year nag-iimproveyung output, habang tumatagal, gumaganda. Even in the opening program, lahat nagiimprove. Siyempre may napupulot sila dun sa dati (last few year’s celebration)”, Dean Robles said after asked if the event exceeds his expectations. “Na-meet naman at saka na-improve (the out-come of the Engineering Week)”, he added. Before completely wrapping up the celebration, there is one event that makes the crowd go wild and have fun, it’s the Battle of the Bands. Amidst of the Christmas break feeling, students were all hyped as the bands started to show what they’ve got to give their department another win during the most awaited competition. During the night, the winners from all the previous events were formally presented to the whole COE-mmunity and is given recognition. ECE, MFE, and MFE ended the event with a bang as they won as the champions, first runner-up and second runner-up respectively. Fireworks that lit-up the night sky were the end mark to the week-long celebration of the College of Engineering held on December 19,2016.

Red Antz hinges third place in Intramurals by Ace Ongaria

The clash has ended. The mighty colony of the College of Engineering conquered the fields.

min”.Red Antz Men’s Volleyball team finished third after a tight game against CAFA Night Owls.

Last November 7-11, 2016, the annual Intramurals took place in the university led by our own President Cecilia Gascon. The said event hosted sports and cultural competitions between all colleges and satellite campuses of Bulacan State University. The week-long array of activities was started by a fun run joined by multitude of students, faculty members, staffs and administration personnel, from Palm Garden Grounds in Santissima, Malolos, Bulacan to BulSU Activity Center. It was followed by an opening ceremony with Ms. Jeslyn Santos, a proud alumna, who recently crowned as Ms. United Continentals 2016. On the same day, Angelica Corporal, General Engineering student, hailed as the first runner up in the muse competition.

Our basketball team also ended third after a game with the CICT Firefoxes on the last day of the Intramurals. “Nung nalaman naming na malakas yung mga kalaban naming at naka-bracket na din ng Red Antz, yung ibang dating.” Rizalino Bacani of Mechanical Engineering recalled when asked what pushed the basketball team to give others good fights. “Pati ‘yung mga players disiplinadokasi dumadating lahat on time at minsan, maaga pa!” More than that, he also acknowledged his fellow engineering students who always occupied half of the audience being another reason for them to do their best in every game.

COE Red Antz lone group of five also championed in the Hiphop Competition held at Valencia Hall after falling third and fourth places in the same event last year. “Unfortunately, we lost due to our lack of conditioning, the problem was our stamina”, Adrianne Cariño explained as per their preparation, “In that case, we strategized our routine to fit the needs and focused on proper warm ups.” The hall was filled with crowd of red booming with their loudest shouts and cheers as the group showcased their routine. “Without them, we will not make it. Best crowd ever.” he added. The colony of engineering students marched and supported each event from day one until the last day of Intramurals. The never wavering spirit of the crowd fueled our representatives and participants in every game and took glory for the college.“Grabe sumuporta ang mga ka-COE natin. Yung tipong kada laban mo puno yung AC (Activity Center), tapos after game magtatanong sila kung kailan next game. Sa COE lang nangyayari ‘yun.” Paolo Alcala, a Mechatronics student playing volleyball, asserted describing how each game happened. “Napansin ko langna lahat ng teammates ko ay laging handa na at excited na lumaro dahil alam nilang inaabangan kami ng mga ka-COE na-

In addition to the above events, Red Antz Swimming team bagged 20 golds, 4 silvers and 10 bronzes with the supervision of their coaches, Engr. Allan Nicolas and Rosette Pangilinan. Jonel Carpio also felt motivated during the Intramurals making him place first in 4x100 meter Medley Relay, 4x50 meter Freestyle Relay and 50 meter Breaststroke events and second in 100 meter Breaststroke event. “Masaya ako at nakasama ko sila sa huli kong Intrams as a Red Antz, good luck next year! To my fellow Red Antz, thank you for your support.” Our Men’s Futsal team placed second while Women’s Futsal team placed third. The College of Engineering has 26 golds, 27 silvers and 43 bronzes in the week-long Intramurals 2016 totaling to 96 medals. Red Antz officially placed third overall after the settlement of tally sheets, as stated by Dexter Simon, Futsal player, “Pinatunayan natin na may ibubugarin tayosa pagdating sa sports, congratulations Red Antz!” Likewise, the event enabled the colony to manifest its unity throughout the week making the whole college advance further ahead of its competitors, igniting the desire for victory and showcasing its pride, honor and dignity above all. This only voices out why Red Antz is Red Antz.

The competition is all about real-world healthcare situational case study sponsored by FlexSim, a software that simulates various scenarios in different industries. The delegates are Mikee Tancio, Abiel Arabejo, Letrelle Montes, together with their coach Engr. Ivy Mar Ramos.

The preparation was intense as the coach said that the software used was not available here. “Pinagaralan namin ‘yong software kasi hindi kami familiar don. We analyze the case. Brainstorming and practice ng presentation.” Engineer Ramos said.

Del Rosario places 8th in 2016 CE Licensure Exams by Jerome Macainan

The Civil Engineer Licensure Exam was held last November 2016. 210 examinees were Civil Engineering graduates from Bulacan State University, 183 of which are first timers or those who are going to take the exams for the first time since they graduated. 105 of the total number of takers passed the exams giving an overall passing rate of 50% to the university. By far, this is the lowest passing rate of Bulacan State University in the Civil Engineer Licensure Exams for the past years. A stricter Civil Engineering Department is to be expected for the days to come. The subject Civil Engineering Correlations shall now have a bearing to the grades of the senior students as well as to their candidacy for graduation. As for the 3rd and 4th Year students from the Department, a stricter grading system shall be observed. Despite the low passing rate of Bulacan State University this year, one of its Civil Engineering graduates was able to make it to the Top 10 examinees of the 2016 Civil Engineer Licensure Exam. After 2015 board examinee, Engr. Mike Christian Alejandro made it to the 8th place, Engr. Kathreen Louise Del Rosario, 21, was able to claim the 8th spot on the list for this year’s exams. “Mahirap yung exam. Siyempre kung madali yun, 100% sana ang passing. Ang hirap kasi sa board

The Civil Engineering Department, although successful in making it to the list of top performing students, is still unable to make it to the top performing schools since most of the passing rates it has garnered were below the required rate. Because of that, the Civil Engineering Faculty makes sure that they make changes in terms of the grading system as well as its curriculum to make sure that its graduates are well equipped in the review centers as well as while taking the exams. “Nothing. Hindi ako nagpadala sa pressure. Siguro yun yung dahilan kung bakit ako nandito ngayon, inenjoy ko lang kasi yung buong process, from the review hanggang sa matapos yung board exam. I just gave my 100% effort and inenjoy ko yung ginagawa ko.” she said when asked about what pressured her most during the exams; although, she did admit that before the exam she felt really pressured and stressed out on making it to the top, since she was one of the Top students of her batch and she was able to rank 1st on her pre-board subject.

PSME Bisons blared for victory by Ace Ongaria

PSME Bisons Blared for Victory PSME BulSU Quizzers started the year right as they bagged third place last January 25, 2017 in Ascendance: MechaWizard 2017 comprising of Paul Aldrin Enriquez, Paolo Rafael Maningas, Ace Patrick Ongaria and Dexter Simon at the Polytechnic University of the Philippine Manila. At the same event, led by Nikka Tiglao, the team of John Vinrae Vargas, Joshua Garcia and Marnie Anne Jeremiah Oliveros landed fifth place.

The struggle was for real as

the event was not fully apprehended by the university’s admin. Due to time constrain, the team were unable to comply with the internal requirements of the university. Though, with the guidance of the organization itself, the journey towards the year-long thirst for victory was finally replenished. Paul Aldrin, the winning team’s captain stated that at least for now, our batch has something to be left for the future quizzers to exceed, “legacy na natin yan.” Hard work pays off as the team was called in the finals of the quiz show and placed bronze.

The said event was joined by numbers of universities, colleges and institutes from all over the Philippines. With its theme, “Igniting the Fuel for Engineering Revolution”, it upholds awareness and opportunities to our soon-to-be mechanical engineers. PSME Gear Masters will be the official PSME BulSU SC Quizzers Guild for the next school year.

The Engineers goes further in GGP by Ace Ongaria

Together with other publications all over the university, the said event held seminars and talks from prominent journalists and media individuals who hoped to inspire and to share their knowledge about the industry like Eros Atalia, Ben Domingo and Julis Calzo. Also, for Day 2, the event further rolled with various writing competitions and for the third day, an acquaintance night. The Engineers graduating staff receives awards. Photo by Chris Ivan Borja After its rise from absence and inactivity last year, The Engineers continued to soar as the Engineering official publication joined the Annual Gawad Galing Plaridel hosted by the Pacesetter last March 30 until April 1, 2017 at the university grounds.

The Engineers bagged 5th place for Best Opinion/ Editorial Page, 4th place for Best Page Design and Best News Page and 3rd for Publication Performance. Chris Ivan Borja placed 4th in English Photojournalism, Benz Coronel was 4th place for English poetry writing and 2nd for Filipino editorial writing, and John Mark Nanip ranked 2nd place for opinion writing.

14 news University enrollment’s next step by Mary Rose Legerin

It is part of our college’s life and is not new to us how hard it is to undergo the process of enrollment before we can be considered as enrolled. The process of enrollment itself is very simple and is divided into 6 parts: Settlement of Balances, Evaluation, Assessment, Payment of Tuition Fees, Release of the Certificate or Registration (CoR), and I.D. Sticker. Yearly, line for the payment in the cashier office can be called as “blockbuster”but it is not new to us because everyone expects this. “Nasanay na ko sa mahaba at matagal na enrollment sa BulSU. Inaabot talaga ng ilang araw bago makaenrol.”JosuaEspinola, an Engineering Student, said in an interview. Even though Land Bank payment made possible last academic year, it is still not enough as a remedy for the increasing number of students to be enrolled each semester. “Based on the perspective of the student, gusto tuloy-tuloy ang process [enrollment], another one is that may charge sa Land Bank, and some students are not aware.” Mr. Aldrin Umali said, President of Student Government 20162017. What will surprise everyone was the last enrolment for the second semester for the academic year 20162017. “Base on my knowledge, fault of the Sarmiento Campus’s SG Facebook Page (BulSU Student CouncilSG) post regarding the announcement about the enrolment, then nai-share ngmga public pages na active dito sa main campus, na-pressure ang mga

students na hindimakapagbayad at makapag-enroll.” Mr. Umali said. Many reasons can be concluded why this happened. This could be the rapid spread of the rumours, fault of the students or the administration, shifting of the school calendar, and other factors. “Hindi sapatang preparation dahil sa calendar shift. Ang naging transition eh, from vacation to enrollment ka-agad.” Said Mr. Joseph Roy Celestino, Director of Student Welfare.“May effect ang shifting ng school calendar sa enrolment kasi and date ng vacation which is December, tingin ko naka-apekto base on psychological perspective, naka “vacation mode” pa ang pamunuan during the enrolment. The duration of the enrolment period is ganoon pa ‘din.” Mr. Umali added. In accordance with this, online enrolment is in progress again after the Vice President for Executive Operations, Mr. Teody San Andres, gave a deadline to Mr. Pimentel, MIS Director, to implement the Online Enrolment last second week of January. “The Vice President of the Student Government 2016-2017, Laurene Caparas, nagkaroon ng meeting with Mr. Teody San Andres about the request on the additional of fifteen (15) windows in the cashier.” Mr. Umali said. The employment for the additional windows will be by job order. If there are many reasons why such incident happened, may solution

can be pushed thru. “Integration of enrolment between colleges. Why not continue to have a cashier in every college if we can already accommodate assessment.” Mr. Celestino suggested.

Eng’g studes dominate.. entry in this competition and nakuha natin ‘yung two major spots. Masarap na mahirap ‘yung experience...mahirap s’yempre ang daming gagawin. Being a mentor does not mean you’re just there to instruct but rather inspire them to come up to things they are supposed to do,” Dela Cruz said. Technopreneurship is the core intervention DICT wants to teach the students and will soon be added to curriculum of engineering students. Under the startup challenge, two tracks were offered namely the software and Internet of Things. “The value of addressing and solving real life problems here in our country, getting out of the classrom in order to see what our community really needs and the ability to sell the idea are the pillars of technopreneurship. To all students especially to engineering walang masama na maging isang empleyado ng isang kompanya but it’s better to build your own company, create jobs and make every Filipino lives better,” he ended.

1st ICpEP.SE Nationals.. naman na lahat ng regional champion ung makakalaban, pero usually naman lagi kong sinasabi sa quizzers ko na i-enjoy lang lahat.” Engr. Alberto humbly added. Challenges came along their way that it nearly cost them the competition. Having nine (9) students to compete with three (3) professors to come along with them was a problem in the Administration taking all the legal papers to process too long because of budget reasons. But none of these affected them and still managed to place first in the Quiz Show scoring a total of 175points beating NCR Team with 150 points. They also achieved fifth place on both Logic Circuit and Breadboarding category and Programming category. If no changes are to be made, the schedule of ICpEP Regional Competition is set on the 28th of January, 2017. For the new set of competitors Engr. Albert said “Unang una eh, maging proud kayo na CpE kayo then always focus sa review and competition.”

Del Rosario places 8th... the top, Del Rosario added, “No. After the exam, I knew then na wala akong pag-asa. Syempre, bibilangin mo yung mga hindi mo alam and madami talaga. So, I must say na prayers lang talaga ang nagdala sa akin sa top 10. Pero, I admit naman na after ng exam nung CE Board ay nasabi ko sa sarili ko na sure nang papasa ako.” She even emphasized that she placed God above all thing and she allowed Him to decide her fate on the exams. “Of course, my family, my boyfriend, my dorm mates, my friends, and of course the Lord Almighty. Kung hindi dahil sa kanila, wala ako dito ngayon.” She then emphasized that the love and support from her family and boyfriend gave her the courage and the confidence to persevere and exert more effort in her review. She said that every time she felt like giving up, they would always remind her that passing the board exams was more impor-

tant than being on the Top 10. “Just enjoy what you are doing and assure yourself na after ng exam ay magiging licensed na kayo. Yun kasi yung paniniwala ko sa buhay, kailangan lang talaga ay mahalin natin yung ginagawa natin. After that, everything follows, even success. So yun lang ginawa ko, and it was really hard work paid off.” She even added that during the exam, she kept her chill and her positive outlook that she is going to pass.

The Certainty of a Schrodinger’s Cat... as I enter college—a system neither good nor bad but the reality of the outside world. This system opened my being that existence is no absolute thing; that you can be on the extremes at the same time. I have been the best and worst in my class. I have been so focused and wasted in things I am loaded with. I have been through ups and downs these years. I started to gather my new self as I started to see the beam of the exit door. I picked up what I think can help me, my instilled morals, gained virtues and stored ethical values. No matter how twisted my loads shall be, at least I think I chose what is right. I am good with it. The crowd grew noisier as everyone poured out of the room. The atmosphere was clattering and shrouded with murmurs. “14.53 centimeters sagot mo sa 20?” “Oo, yun nga.” “Dinig ko meters, buti naalala ko. Looks-fam nga pala yun” “Bingi ka lang talaga!” With a sigh of comfort, I shifted from being uneasy to being relieved.

Literary Concealed Omens by Julie Rebanal

I wonder, When the world beneath me crumbled When my dreams, like glass, shattered into tiny pieces When my hopes became dandelion seeds blown into the sky Why did you stay by my side? I wonder, How can I love you back? When I’m all about running against the track Fearing the day I might lose again in the race of love Nothing good comes in taking risks, I once said Then you came along and proved to me it’s just all in my head I smiled back at you Looked into the galaxies written in your eyes Discovered every history your heart had been through Rode along the highs and lows of your roller coaster life Everything was flawless, perfect Or at least, that’s what I thought Days, months, and years went by I witnessed how you’d lost the sparkles in your eyes

How cold your hands had been every time we touched And seeing those makes my heart clutch Then you left me So sudden, so imminently Stuck, because I’m not yet ready For I will never, ever be I got lost With no path to follow Blinded by pain and sorrow I ran away, with nowhere to go At last, I stopped wondering I gave up asking I left all the nightmares I’m in Figured I should mend myself Put back together the pieces I broke Breathe, so I wouldn’t choke Forget the wonders, to stop them from sprouting And live, to prevent your ghost from haunting

pigeon by Raven Christine Dario

You were set to flee Flee from the cage, That accustomed home. The skies were blue, As you spread your wings. The flutters are the evidence, Of your departure, Or it could be plight..

Dreads between, The chasm of where you did flee, And a stranger waving at you. What should you do? Where should you go? In the cage that waives liberty, Or in another hand, Unsure of misery?

Glides with the wind, Solicited freedom. The warmth of the sun, The breadth of heights, Gritted on your beak. The crescent moon, Welcomes you in horror. Where do you belong?

Hysteria, Awaits in picking. Your wings are weary, And so as your heart. Grapples a twig, Of hope and desperation, There’s no safe landing For the lone pigeon.

Literary to the person who was left behind by Ana Loraine Baez

It’s a lie when you say you’ve let go of the past. Nobody let go of memories. Every smile has undeniable mark. Remember your first photo together? His smiles as he looks at you while you face the camera. How about your first valentine’s day together? He wore that exclusive smile you fell in love to. That proud smile when he introduced you to his friends. The smile that didn’t fade when you let him meet your parents. You smile as you share to your friends how he took care of you when you were sick. Tired smiles with contentment. The last smile you saw before he left you. Have you let it go? Every tear has unforgettable memory.

Remember the time you asked her to be your girl? You shed tears because she said yes. The first time you received a love letter from her? You cried because you felt every word striking through your spine. Recall the time you had your biggest fight with her? You had no choice but to cry over the phone just for her to listen to you, to make her change her mind about leaving you. How about when your knees were on the floor, your shoulders were shaking and you were begging her to come back to you and she said no? You cried as she walked out. When all your efforts were no longer appreciated and you were tired of it—tears escaped, am I right? Close your eyes and savor the pain as you heard again those lines she said the night she left you. You cried as you silently wish that it was just a dream but you felt the tears, don’t you? It wasn’t forgotten, right? Every heartbreak leaves inerasable scar. Reminisce the first time he let you cry to sleep when you

two got into a big fight and didn’t settle things out. The pride you swallowed just to make peace but he doesn’t care at all. The pain when you caught him cheating. The day he said that you are not worth fighting for. When he got tired and weary about you. He chose someone and it is not you. The spark’s gone. You are not enough for him. It’s not you it’s me line. Efforts unappreciated. You were taken for granted. He fell out of love. He left you without any reason. You know it’s all in there ripping your heart like there’s no tomorrow leaving you with all that scar. Being left behind by someone whom you never thought will leave you will always haunt you. It will build up insecurities and doubts with everything you shared and will be sharing. You will feel unloved and it will give you second thoughts about loving and trusting someone again. It will make you feel that you are not worth fighting for and you are not capable of loving someone and make them stay. It will question everything you had with them. You’ve dive in the depths of your pain. What’s next? Let the pain consume you? Let those who stayed grow weary about you? You were hurt. Everyone around you knows it. It’s flashed all over your face. Don’t let bitterness eat up what pain didn’t consume. Don’t get empty. Don’t let them win and see you in pain. Set when to stop, you decide when. Memories will stay as memories. It will be buried in your head and rise up when midnight thoughts hit you. Make the pain go in a diet. Slowly accept everything until you no longer crave for them—the feelings, the memories, their existence in your life. Let yourself accept everything for there is no such thing as forgetting, only accepting. One day, someone will come along your way and you will be having second thoughts or maybe more. You may create walls around you and don’t let them in but did you even wonder when you will let yourself be happy with someone else again? You deserve better and you will miss that better one by staying where someone left you. Let yourself go with the pain of your yesterday. Let yourself be free. Keep in your mind that you don’t deserve someone who will leave you for if someone truly loves you, leaving can be an option but will never be a choice to choose. Give yourself a chance to be happy and to meet someone you deserve. But let me tell you these. Commit again whenever you are ready, not when you are sad and never when you miss being with someone. Commit when you have yourself fixed and remember that it is never your past lover nor your future one will complete you. Only you can complete yourself. Besides, nobody deserves to be with someone who is incomplete. So, as you wait, complete yourself until the right time to love again comes.

22 features INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT IE and its Background Many of practitioners that the industrial engineering education offers the best of both worlds: the engineering discipline and education in the business management. Industrial engineering, due to its broader scope, offers a work opportunity to work in a variety of business, as compared to other engineering disciplines that walkthrough a very specific areas or field. Flexibility is the most distinctive attribute of Industrial Engineering. Be it in shortening the queues or waiting line in an amusement parks, designing an optimized route for city busses, distribution of products worldwide, improving the operations of an airline, decreasing the production time of a factory, introducing a way to save spaces in the warehouse, developing a worthwhile products, streamlining a hospital’s operating room, making a product, tool and equipment easy to use, reducing work-related injuries and illnesses, these challenges point out to a common goal - saving a company’s money and improving efficiency – which is what IE’s primarily do. Indeed, IE is about choices and how to make one. But what Industrial Engineering really means? Industrial Engineering, according to Institute of Industrial & Systems Engineers, is an engineering discipline concerned with optimization of integrated systems of people, money, knowledge, information, equipment and energy. Industrial Engineers work to eliminate waste of time, money, materials, man-hours, machine time, energy, and other non-value adding resources with the goal of minimizing the input while maximizing the output of a system. While other engineers make things, Industrial Engineers make things better. IE in the BulSUan’s Way It was year 1999 when Administration of Bulacan State University saw a need to supply a growing demand for IE’s in the region. Inquiries and requests on the offering of the BSIE program kept on coming in the desk of then Dean of the College of Engineering, Dr. Cecilia Geronimo, which prompt the realization of the IE Program in Bulacan State University. From then, the Bulacan State University, produces a competent, service oriented, and productive individuals in the field of IE which suffice the needs of the region and the demands of the global standard with a high employment rate of 92.33% (as of 2015).

ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT Imagine the world without electricity? It’s hard to imagine that, right? If you want something that encompasses your thoughts of having a bright future, you must study Electrical Engineering. The electrical engineering field encompasses several sub-disciplines including: electrical power systems, control, electronics, microelectronics, signal processing, biomedical instrumentation, wireless and wireline communication systems, measurement instrumentation, integrated circuit design, software engineering and computer design. They also say that Electrical Engineering is the mother of all engineering discipline because its subareas are within the other disciplines like Electronics and Communication Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering. There’s a lot of job opportunities when you become an electrical engineer, you can work in the offices, labs, or industrial plants of various industries including: the manufacturers of electrical components and computer equipment, industrial machinery, medical and scientific instruments, transportation, communication, computer related sectors, the federal government, electric utility and engineering consulting firms. The projects you may work on can range from designing a telecommunication system up to the operation of electric power stations to the lighting and wiring of buildings, the design of consumer electronics, and the electrical control of industry machinery.

26 features CIVIL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT Be Civilized, Build the Civilization Civil Engineering has been one of the oldest branch of Engineering known to man. As Military Engineers built weapons to defend or attack, some engineers focused on developing structures that will improve the civilian domain. With that, early civilizations— whose ingenuity are still showcased even to this day—were built. You may ask, what is so great about this very old practice of Engineering. Well, one of the most notable feats of it would be the Acropolis and Parthenon in Greece, the aqueducts and the Colosseum in Rome, the pyramids of the Egyptian empire and the Great Wall of China. Still sounds old? Well, even up to this day Civil Engineering still continues in changing the face of the planet like the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the Ice Hotel in Norway, the Millau Viaduct in Europe and even the International Space Station, which is an artificial satellite, was built through Civil Engineering. So, even with the current advancement of technology, Civil engineering continues to grow with such advancements. It helped in developing new ways and helpful equipment both in designing and constructing. Not interested in construction? Civil Engineering does not end with building structures alone as most people have connotated. Aside from Structural Engineering, Civil Engineers may also pursue careers in Water Resource Engineering, which mainly focuses on designing hydraulic structures (or systems) such as dams, reservoirs, canals and water distribution systems or pipe networks. Geotechnical Engineering, which focuses on studying soil— its behavior, load bearing capacity as well as foundation designs. Geodetic or Surveying Engineering, is the sub-branch that focuses on mapping, surveying and levelling of land, and contouring of terrains. Environmental Engineering may also be pursued by Civil Engineers through designing of environment friendly sewage system and pollution management. For those who are more interested in managerial careers, they may pursue Project Management Engineering. So, even though it is one of the oldest branch, it is still one of the most essential since humanity continues to grow. It serves as the foundation of all Civilization Advancements, as it always had. It starts the framework of civilization that the other branches of engineering may improve. And together, through coexistence, forms a world that is more advance than yesterday. With each branch of engineering working, humanity is, indeed, one step closer to the future. Build the world with us, join us in changing the horizon. Be civilized, choose Civil Engineering.

entertainment Pedro: Juan, sinong prof ang hindi nagtuturo pero ang lakas magpa-quiz? Juan: Mukhang marami ‘yan pre ah? Pero siret, sino? Pedro: PATATAS.

Jose: Pareng Wally! Pumasa ka ba sa mechanics? Wally: Hindi nga eh, ikaw ba tol? Jose: … *TUNAY NA PAGKAKAIBIGAN*

1st year student: Ang hirap naman ng chemistry, algebra at trigo! 2nd year student: Hintayin niyo magka-integral at physics kayo! 3rd year student: inaabangan na kayo ng mechanics at DE HAHAHA! PATATAS: H’wag lang kayong madaan-daan sa subject ko! A Mathematician, an engineer, and a physicist were traveling through Scotland when they saw a black sheep through the window of the train. “Aha”, says the engineer, “I see that Scottish sheep are black.” “Hmm”, says the physicist, “You mean that some Scottish sheep are black”. “No”, says the mathematician, “All we know is that there is at least one sheep in Scotland and that at least one side of that one sheep is black!” Source: Humorpedia

One day, Einstein, Newton, and Pascal meet up and decide to play a game of hide and seek. Einstein volunteered to go first. As he counted, Pascal ran away scrambling to find a great hiding place. Giddily, he squeezed into a crawl space sure that he would win this time as this was his best hiding spot to date and Newton surely wouldn’t find an equal. Newton on the other hand, stood right in front of Einstein, pulled out a piece of chalk and drew a box on the ground of roughly 1×1 meters. Once this was completed, he sat down neatly inside the box and waited for Einstein to finish counting. When Einstein opened his eyes, he of course saw Newton and with a bit of disappointment said “I found you Newton, you lose”… but Newton replied, “On the contrary, you are looking at one Newton over a square meter… Pascal loses!” Before studying engineering, if someone asked me what 1+1 is, I would have said “2.” Now, I’d say “I’m pretty sure it’s 2, but we’d better make it 3 just to be safe.” Source: Marymelodic via Reddit
