“‘Edgcumbe Park’, where each season is more delightful than the last, combined with the best of Modern Home Building, is rapidly becoming THE place to live West of London. Every house, every site and winding cul-de-sac is imaginatively planned by our Architectural Staff preserving the Oaks and the Mountain Ash, the Scots Pine and Sycamore, ensuring good orientation and pleasant views. Planning in the RENWAY manner guarantees you security of your investment.” EXTRACT FROM ORIGINAL SELLING BROCHURE, C.1962

Edgcumbe Park, commenced in 1958 and part of Windsor Great Park. Rather than bulldoze the land clear, Renway planned their development of 360 houses, chalets and bungalows, and 54 apartments around the keystone oak, pine, mountain ash and silver birch specimens in this 80 acre site to create a communal environment with minimum sacrifice of trees. The highways meander purposefully yet unhurriedly between trees

“How often do we hear it and see it advertised: ‘Houses for modern living,’ ‘homes of advanced design,’ ‘your home for the future’ — and yet when a modern house of sufficiently advanced design was required for ‘Fahrenheit 451’ — set some fifty years ahead in time — the design chosen was a Renway home at Edgcumbe Park, Crowthorne. On this development part of this excellent film was shot, and the residents enjoyed the excitement of seeing Julie Christie, Oskar Werner and producer François Truffaut at work on their very doorsteps.” ‘NEW HOMES’ MAGAZINE, 1967

Fahrenheit 451 — the temperature at which book paper catches fire and burns — is “A novel of a strange and weird future” depicting a dystopic futuristic society where books are prohibited, and if found, incinerated due to their subversive effect on the public. Eminent cinematographer François Truffaut chose Edgcumbe Park and its Type 60 Bungalow to represent the dwelling of the future for the story’s rebel fireman, Montag, in his critically-acclaimed 1966 film dramatisation of Ray Bradbury’s cult novel.

THE BUNGALOW TODAY S E T T I N G , S T Y L E & S I T U AT I O N
“A mid-century modern ranch-style home: low-slung, light-filled — Californian cool comes to Crowthorne!” Situated at the heart of Renway’s award-winning Edgcumbe Park Development, 5 Heathermount Drive occupies one of the most commanding plots. One of only ten Type 60/60A bungalows, this modern ‘Ranch-style’ design with its asymmetric roof, picture windows and open-plan living takes clear cues from mid-century Californian homebuilders such as the renowned Joseph Eichler. Of the 27 house designs on acclaimed Edgcumbe Park, the Type 60 bungalows (and their mirror image, the Type 60A) are generally to be found at the hairpins of the development’s meandering roadways where their footprints and low profiles are so well suited to these expansive corner plots.

PROPERTY TOUR VI EWI NG TH E B U NGALOW
Purchased by the current owners in 2007 in a tired and unloved state, they undertook an extensive programme of renovations and restorations to the interior and gardens to once again reveal the beauty in Renway’s original design. Through its occupation by 3 previous owners over forty years, it had been modified from its original design in the conversion of its garage to an additional reception room with cloakroom/ensuite and the extension of the property to include a new garage along its front aspect. The bungalow maximises light and space, with an airy open plan reception area, 3 good sized bedrooms, a luxurious bathroom and an additional bedroom/studio with cloakroom all filled with natural daylight through extensive glazing and five skylights across its vaulting, asymmetric roof. In keeping with Renway’s ethos of integrating homes with their environments, double doors open the living space out to extensive decking with pergola and eating area. Sited centrally in its plot, the gardens wrap around the bungalow and offer a number of distinct areas to relax and entertain, tracking the sun throughout the day.

Overlooking the rear garden, the den is tucked away as a chill-out room, offering a cosy place to think. Subject to the relevant permissions, there is potential to knock through into the adjoining garage, creating a lovely self-contained annexe, studio or living space opening out onto the rear patio.

THE PARTICULARS 5 HEATHERMOUNT DRIVE, EDGCUM BE PARK, CROWTHORNE, BERKSHIRE RG45 6HJ
The 3/4-bedroom home has been sympathetically updated by the current owners whilst staying true to the original design and ethos of the property and development. Natural materials feature throughout, from the hardwood exterior cladding and front door; exposed interior brickwork; parquet floor extending throughout all open-plan areas, and oak and American walnut interior cladding and shelving in the living space, bathroom and cloakroom.
A superb example of the Renway Type 60A bungalow — a modern, single-storey dwelling — situated on a commanding corner plot of almost a fifth of an acre with 150’ frontage on meandering Heathermount Drive. With architectural influences from the mid-century modern Ranch style homes of California, including asymmetric roof, extensive glazing and a loggia, the property is a light, bright, open plan residence in the award winning sylvan setting of Edgcumbe Park.
