With a little weekend time, some timber and the must-have tools from Ryobi, you can make your own new favourite spot for relaxing alfresco

STEP 1: CUT OUT THE BASE

First, grab a piece of project panel • and measure a 1200mm x 600mm rectangular base for your chair. Cut using a Ryobi 18V ONE+ HP™ Brushless Circular Saw.

STEP 2: CUT OUT THE ARMS

Cut two 600mm x 350mm pieces of panel using the Ryobi circular saw. Next, cut a 10-degree angle along the bottom 600mm lengths on both pieces.

STEP 3: CURVE THE ARMS

Grab a piece of string, tape it in the centre, attach a pencil to one end and draw a curve on the side opposite the 10-degree angle on both arm panels. We’ve gone for a wider radius for a modern look.

STEP 4: CUT AN ANGLE FOR THE RECLINE

For a comfortable recline, you’ll need to angle the chair sides where the base, back and arms meet. Mark a 10-degree angle from the top left of an arm panel to the bottom. With all lines drawn, cut with a Ryobi 18V ONE+ HP™ Brushless Jigsaw (double check your measurements first). You’ll end up with a curved corner diagonal to the 10-degree angle for the recline. Take the completed arm and trace it onto the second panel, then cut that one, too.

STEP 5: PRE-DRILL SCREW HOLES

To attach the arms, you’ll need a Ryobi 18V ONE+ drill driver. Pre-drill 4mm holes in the base 50mm from the edges. Space the holes about 100mm apart. Screw the sides into the base.

STEP 6: CUT THE BACKBOARD

Lay the structure on its edge over the remaining piece of project panel and trace its outline. This will ensure the backboard has the right dimensions. Use your Ryobi circular saw to cut along the lines, then check the backboard fits flush.

STEP 7: ATTACH THE BACKBOARD

Next, pre-drill 4mm holes (about 100mm apart) into the backboard, then screw it into place.

STEP 8: MAKE A CROSS BENCH

You’ll need a weight-distributing ‘cross bench’ that attaches to the chair legs and base. With the Ryobi 18V ONE+ 184mm Mitre Saw, cut two panels slightly shorter than the length of the base, then cut a 45-degree angle on all ends. Cut another two pieces to 400mm, then screw them to the longer pieces to make the rectangular cross bench.

STEP 9: CREATE THE LEGS

Measure and cut four legs about 300mm long, cutting each end on a parallel 45-degree angle. Check they’re equal so your chair won’t wobble. Pre-drill holes in the tops of the legs, then screw them into the cross bench ends using 8G x 40mm stainless steel decking screws. Make sure they’re flush. Turn the chair over and screw the cross bench with legs onto the base

STEP 10: BRING IT ALL TOGETHER

Flip the finished chair back over, add comfy cushions, choose a scenic spot and sit back to enjoy your masterpiece!
