DECEMBER
NEWS
Editor’s letter
Welcome!
D
ecember is always a busy time, so it’s often tricky to find space around the menu-planning, tree-sourcing and present-buying marathon to get the house in order. For me, having guests to stay generally means turning to my favourite quick fixes. 1) Declutter: it’s amazing what a difference a cleared surface or two can make! 2) Clean: shiny shelves and floors make the whole place feel fresh. Encourage a little crafty creativity with a unique gift kit!
Strucket 19L strainer/bucket with plug in Aqua, $49.99, I/N: 0336369
3) Paint: a quick whizz around the walls with a brush and a match pot works wonders. This issue, we’re sharing some speedy sort-outs for your home and garden, as well as a few inspirational ways to make the big day truly special, whether you’re celebrating at home or away. See our gorgeous decorating feature from page 13.

Sunshine Coast mum of three Kelly Lavery was determined to find a simpler and more hygienic way of separating out the used water from soaking laundry, or washing fruit and veg. Introducing the Strucket, Kelly’s ingenious bucket with a built-in strainer! It has an external drain and a design that allows the strainer to sit either in the bucket or elevated above. Made of food grade, BPA-free and 100 per cent recyclable materials, you’ll want one for both your laundry and kitchen. Find it in store or online!

1 Make the most of every drop. Spread a soil wetter over your lawn and garden beds to help improve water penetration, increase watering efficiency and minimise run-off and wastage. 2 There’s still time to get vegies in. Plant beans, chillies, eggplant, silverbeet, tomatoes or zucchinis now. Feed with a liquid fertiliser
SOME LIKE IT HOT

From mild to super powerful, you’ll find a range of different chilli seedlings in store.
throughout the season to boost plant growth and productivity. Looking for the perfect present? Pair a pretty terrazzo pot with an indoor plant and suitable fertiliser for a gift that will last and last.
4 3 Mow lawns in the cool of the day and avoid removing more than one-third of leaf blades. This will help reduce moisture stress and allow your lawn to recover.
TURN UP THE BEET
A fantastic spinach substitute, silverbeet is easy to grow, with a long harvest window.
After applying fertiliser around edible plants, delay harvesting for a few days and rinse well before cooking and eating. If using products to deal with pests, diseases or weeds, always read the label, follow the instructions carefully and wear suitable protective equipment. Store all garden chemicals out of reach of children and pets.
Perfume your garden by planting gardenias. The white blooms have a gorgeous fragrance and can be picked and enjoyed indoors, too. Choose a spot in full sun with well-draining soil. ‘Florida’ is the most popular variety. The sight and sound of water can instantly make a space feel cooler. 5 Consider installing a bird bath, pond or water feature in your garden or courtyard.
TOMATO TIME
The ultimate summer crop, with varieties to suit all size gardens. Taller forms require staking.
Mulch like mad! Spread a layer of organic mulch over your garden beds to help conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
6 1 Seasol ‘Super Soil’ wetter and conditioner, $11.62/1.2L, I/N: 0029269. 2 Yates ‘Thrive’ natural vegie & herb liquid plant food, $13.50/1L, I/N: 2962094. 3 Capra ‘Funnel’ 24.6cm x 22.2cm terrazzo resin pot in Gum Leaf, $95, I/N: 0262600. 4 Yates ‘Thrive’ natural indoor plant food spray, $10.99/500ml, I/N: 0225073. 5 Northcote Pottery Water Magic ‘Panya’ 91cm x 36cm x 33cm fountain, $305, I/N: 2810331. 6 Garden Essentials organic sugar cane mulch bale, $13.88/7m2, I/N: 2961431‡.
PURPLE REIGN
Eggplant is one of the most rewarding vegies to grow. Pick regularly to encourage more.

Summer safeguards How to get whole-home security
T
Ring Stick Up Cam Battery’s versatile design offers security indoors and out Ring Spotlight Cam Battery/Wired lights up the darkest areas
Handily, Ring Stick Up Cam Battery can be placed on any flat surface
THE RIGHT SPOT There’s a Ring camera for every area in and around the home, so it’s important to think about mounting, internet access, lighting and power.
The compact Ring Indoor Cam is easy to place anywhere inside your home. The versatile Ring Stick Up Cam Battery works inside or outdoors. The Ring Spotlight Cam Battery/Wired and Ring Floodlight Cam Plus even add lights and a siren. Ring Stick Up Cam Battery Indoor/Outdoor I/N: 0173106 (phone not included)
SMART MONITORING For a whole-home solution, start with a Ring Video Doorbell. It lets you check on people as they come and go, talk to visitors at the door and keep an eye out for movement, even after dark, thanks to night vision. You can receive notifications on your smartphone when someone presses the doorbell, and – as with all Ring Doorbells and cameras – Motion Alerts when motion is detected. When an alert pops up on your phone, you can tap it to see a live view and talk with someone on the other end.

ravelling this holiday season? A great security system makes it easy to keep an eye on things back at home, even when you’re away. Thankfully, Ring offers a total peace of mind package. If the older teens have decided to return from the summer trip early, you’ll be able to make sure they’re safe and sound at home. Are pets spending the day alone, while you take a day out at the beach? With Ring you can check in on your furkids too.
Planning where to place your Ring Security Cameras is key to avoiding blind spots. Indoors, cover thoroughfares like the stairway or hall, the main bedroom, and common areas including living rooms and the kitchen. Outside, entry points and areas which aren’t visible from the street should be covered, such as the backyard, and place cameras out of reach. With the complete Ring security set-up around your home, you can be assured that everything – and everyone – will be safe and sound while you’re out and about.

t’s the most wonderful time of the year… for a gourmet feast! We love a barbecued Christmas dinner, delivering old world tradition with a laidback Aussie flavour. To elevate a barbecue to suit the occasion, all you need is a Kamado Joe charcoal grill.
*Available to order online or from the Special Orders Desk.
STAR OF THE SHOW Whether you’re searing or smoking, the Kamado Joe ‘Classic’ delivers the distinctive flavour of a charcoal grill, which turns everything from prime steak to your weekday sausages into a special occasion meal. The distinctive shape of the Kamado Joe replicates a wood oven, evenly distributing heat and flavour for unsurpassed results. While the egg shape makes it an easier fit for any size of patio, the 18-inch cooking surface means you’re not short of grill space – it can even handle the Christmas ham! Plus the Divide & Conquer two-tier system means you can create two temperature zones within the grill, giving you enormous Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.
flexibility to cook a range of festive fare, all at the same time. It’s also available in 24-inch and 13.5-inch models, so there’s a Kamado Joe to suit every family.
HELPING HAND Creating the ultimate Christmas feast is all about mastering flavour, and with a charcoal grill, this starts with your choice of fuel. Kingsford applewood charcoal briquettes infuse your food with the mellow, sweet taste of applewood, which is a delicious match for a classic Chrissy ham. Feeling more adventurous? A little hot sauce or spicy seasonings might be just the thing to liven up the Christmas table, or else tuck a Butcher’s Axe gift pack under the tree for future culinary adventures. After all the crackers are pulled and the ham devoured, don’t forget to give your faithful grill the gift of a good clean. Sabco BBQ scrub cloths will get the barbie back to sparkling in no time, ready for the next festive occasion.
1 Combine cherry jam, vinegar, sugar, mustard and star anise in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Cook, stirring, for 5 mins until the sugar dissolves. Bring to the boil, then remove from heat. Set aside to cool slightly. 2 Meanwhile, place the ham on a clean work surface. Use a small sharp knife to cut through the rind 8cm from the shank. Run a thumb under the rind to separate from the fat. Peel back, sliding your fingers under the rind to remove. 3 Use a small sharp knife to score the fat diagonally at 3cm intervals to make a diamond pattern (don’t score the fat too deeply as it can slide off during cooking). 4 Prepare the Kamado Joe with Kingsford applewood charcoal briquettes, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Heat to 120°C. Place ham on the rack and brush with half the glaze. Cover and smoke, brushing the ham with remaining glaze every 20 mins and adding extra briquettes as needed, for 3 hours or until the ham is caramelised and heated through. Set aside for 20 mins to rest.

W
e all know that Australian native flora is built tough, but did you know it can be tasty, too? Native bush food plants (or ‘bush tucker’ plants) have been part of the First Nations diet and culture for millennia, and they’re now enjoying a resurgence in popularity. But you’ll struggle to find these culinary delights at your grocer! “To experience the flavours of ‘our backyard’, you need to grow them in your backyard,” says Mark Tucek of Tucker Bush (tuckerbush. com.au). It’s the easiest way to access a wonderful selection of edible goodies, and they’re great at attracting local fauna to the garden, too.
Nurture natives
To grow edible natives, good soil is key. “The soil should be well drained and enriched with plenty of organic matter,” says Samantha Martin, author of Bush Tukka Guide and founder of Tribal Voice Connections (facebook.com/ thebushtukkawoman). If growing in pots, Mark suggests using a premium potting mix; “It does not need to be native-specific, but a premium mix with good drainage and other additives will benefit plants in the long run.” Your best bet for an easy-to-grow and thriving garden is to choose native edible plants that are suited to growing in your region. Once established, most will happily grow without too much fuss, but to encourage more robust growth and intense flavours, feed regularly. “Use a native-specific fertiliser throughout the growing season – liquid fertilisers are fast-acting and will help boost growth quickly,” explains Mark. Here are 10 of our favourites. Note: due to seasonal availability, not all natives will be in stock in all stores all year round.
1
Midyim berry (Austromyrtus dulcis) A small shrub, 1m tall and 1.5m wide, with edible white-and-purple-speckled berries. Choose a spot in full sun or part shade with well-draining soil. Pick and eat berries when ripe. “They are great in fruit salads, muffins and smoothies,” says Samantha.
“Don’t be afraid to experiment with bush flavours – use them as you would salt and pepper” Samantha Martin, author of Bush Tukka Guide 36 bunnings.com.au |

Macadamia nuts fall from the tree once mature
2
Queensland Davidson’s plum (Davidsonia pruriens) Also known as ooray, this slendertrunked tree can reach up to 20m in the wild but remains much smaller (4-8m) in the garden. The blue-black plum fruit has bright red flesh that can be quite tart, so it’s often used in jams or preserves. Grows best in warm climates where it thrives in full sun, but prefers part shade when grown in subtropical and tropical zones.
3
Red back ginger (Alpinia caerulea) Lush green leaves, blue berries and rhizomes all taste of mild ginger. This perennial grows best in warm climates in part or full shade. Wrap seafood parcels in the leaves, enjoy the berries when ripe (but do not eat the seeds!) and use the rhizomes like ginger.
4
Macadamia ‘Beaumont’ (M. integrifolia x M. tetraphylla) This hybrid evergreen tree produces one of the world’s most-loved nuts and grows 5-10m tall and 4-6m wide. Plant in full sun and well-drained soil enriched with plenty of organic matter. Nuts start forming after four years.
5
Photography (Geraldton wax, Davidson’s plum, saltbush and midyim berry) tuckerbush.com.au, (macadamia and finger lime) Getty Images, (red back ginger) Alamy Stock Photo.
Old man saltbush (Atriplex nummularia) The silver-grey foliage on this shrub is highly ornamental, but the leaves are also perfect for imparting a strong salty flavour to salads and savoury dishes. It grows across various climates and is tolerant of most soil types. Once established, it is drought hardy.
6
Geraldton wax ‘Jambinu Zest’ (Chamelaucium uncinatum) This variety was specially bred so both the leaves and flowers can be eaten – traditionally, only the leaves were used. Both have a zesty lemon flavour that can be added to desserts and savoury dishes. Find it in autumn, and plant in a spot in full sun or part shade with well-draining soil.
7
Finger lime (Citrus australasica) A large shrub or small tree (up to 6m tall) with stubby finger-like fruit filled with pearls of tangy lime juice. Branches are heavily thorned and make great nesting places. Grow in warm climates in full sun to part shade.
8
Warrigal greens (Tetragonia tetragonioides) The perfect native spinach alternative with a fresh, grassy flavour and a mildly bitter aftertaste. “It’s absolutely delicious and is high in vitamin C and antioxidants,” says Samantha. It grows best in warm climates and prefers full sun to part shade. Plant in pots or garden beds.

Lemon myrtle (Backhousia citriodora) The foliage of this beautiful shrub or small tree is widely used around the world. “The leaves are enjoyed in both savoury and sweet dishes, but it’s also a highly prized medicinal plant,” says Samantha Martin. “Indigenous people used it to soothe sores, boils and cuts.” Grows in warm, frost-free temperate zones and subtropical areas. Choose a spot in full sun with well-draining soil.
Improves soil 6
Native lemon grass (Cymbopogon ambiguus) The fine leaves of this tussock-forming grass are wonderfully lemon scented and can be used in a variety of sweet or savoury dishes. It can grow up to 2m tall and prefers a spot with well-draining soil in full sun or part shade. Highly drought tolerant once established.

Sparkling clean A perfect pool has never been easier to achieve with the Baracuda™ Adventura™ robotic cleaner
T
he pool is the place to be in summer – but do you find you’re scrubbing the steps and corners yourself, despite running the pool cleaner? It’s time to invest in the 4WD Baracuda ‘Adventura’ robotic cleaner.
HARD WORKING The Adventura is built to work hard. Its powerful and constant cyclonic suction allows it to capture small, medium and large debris (like gum nuts, twigs and eucalyptus leaves) without compromising on power throughout the cleaning cycle. Its patented Vortex Technology also keeps the debris suspended while the cleaner is at work, so the filter canister won’t clog. An 18m tangle-resistant swivel cable caters for pools up to 12m x 6m in any shape, and the cleaner is suitable for all surfaces including concrete, pebblecrete, Quartzon, tile, fibreglass and vinyl.
USER FRIENDLY The Adventura robotic cleaner is incredibly thorough and easy to use. Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.
Simply plug it in and press start. The 4WD machine will overcome all obstacles in its way to leave your pool perfectly clean all over, steps and corners included, while a patented lift-system makes for lightweight removal from the pool. It comes with an easy-to-assemble caddy (no tool required) so you can conveniently transport and store it away. Even maintenance is simple thanks to the easy access and hygienic design of the filter canister, which lets you remove debris in just minutes.
REDUCE CHLORINE USAGE Baracuda Blu52’s patented “one-treatment per week” formulation acts as a sanitiser, algaecide and clarifier all in one. With increased algaecides in the water, more chlorine is freed up to attack bacteria and viruses. This means that you can reduce your chlorine usage by up to 70 per cent. Suitable for all chlorine, salt water and mineral pools. Each box of Blu52 can treat up to 50,000L of pool water for
four weeks. Just add the pre-dosed bags of Blu52 directly into the skimmer each week. No measuring. No fuss. Taking care of your pool has never been easier.

Pool places
In-ground pools require planning, excavation, plenty of space and a lengthy build, but an above-ground option can be swim-ready much faster. Start by planning where you’ll put it. “How much flat space you have can influence which size pool is most suitable, or whether you’re better off with a compact spa,” says Peter Kamali, Bunnings national pool, spa, sheds and shade buyer. Allow an area large enough to accommodate the pool, with clearance around the sides for access, a pool pump, fence and a non-climbable perimeter. “You’re likely to need access to plumbing and electricity as well,” adds Peter. Budget might also influence your selection. Prices start at $499 for a steel-frame pool or an inflatable spa, while you can expect to pay approximately $1,499 for a premium above-ground pool. “You’ll also need to factor the cost of a pool fence and filling it up with water,” says Peter.

Your water system can affect your enjoyment and pool running costs. “Chlorine is the cheapest to set up but can be harder to maintain correct levels and can be harsh on the skin and eyes,” says Peter. “Saltwater is gentler yet requires a chlorinator system and is not suited to all pools, whereas mineral pools boast great water quality and benefits, although are often the costliest to set up.”

Safety requirements
You’ll need to fence your pool or spa to comply with Australian regulations. For more information, visit spasa.com. au and consult your relevant state or territory government and local authority for a pool safety compliance checklist. It’s also important to check the regulations about secure lids, fencing and permits for spas with your relevant state or territory government and local authority. The most popular options for pool fencing are aluminium or glass. “Aluminium fencing you can buy off the
shelf is a cost-effective solution which is quick and easy to install,” says landscape designer Ben Wilson of Garden Constructions (garden constructions.com.au). “It requires minimal maintenance, allows airflow and can be combined with other pool fencing materials like timber, for a more custom look.” Glass can be installed several ways, either fully frameless, with spigots or with posts. “Some states require a glazing certificate after installation to comply with regulations, so it’s a job best left to the professionals,” says Ben.

Landscaping
In-ground pools have the benefit of being hidden below the surface, but an above-ground pool can still look the business with clever landscaping. “Laying steppers, to create a designated path leading to the pool gate, will give the zone a feeling of permanence,” says Ben, who also suggests using flexible paving or synthetic grass around the immediate perimeter of the pool. “This will prevent the area becoming muddy and can be easily altered if needed,” he adds. Although safety regulations restrict climbable tree branches around the pool boundary, greenery and softness can be added with a careful selection of plants. Ben suggests using hardy varieties that will tolerate pool splash, such as lilly pilly (Acmena smithii), sweet viburnum, hardy succulents like agave and strappy Lomandra ‘Tanika’. The pool pump, filter and cleaning equipment can be concealed in a way that sits seamlessly in your landscape. Options include tucking it all behind a garden screen, or housing it in a custom-built box or enclosure with roof – which has the added advantage of providing protection from potential damage from high winds or falling tree branches.

2
n Get your pool water tested every two to four weeks, which you can do in store‡. n Top up pool water as needed, to maintain a water level at least halfway up the skimmer box opening. n To help keep water crystal clear during the busy swimming season, treat it with a weekly shock dose.
3
n Banish debris with the right tools. Use a leaf scoop/ shovel, regularly scrub the pool floor and walls with a pool algae brush on a telescopic pole and empty the skimmer box daily.
4 5

Seal of excellence Make your pool refresh project a snap with Selleys MarineFlex sealant Pool owners should always have Selleys MarineFlex on hand to help with instant repairs

ith the weather heating up, it’s time to pull the covers off the pool, outdoor spa and boat – plus, it’s the season of repairs, to ensure everything is leak free and ready for summer fun. Tick off those niggling little jobs quickly and effectively with Selleys MarineFlex, a professional-grade adhesive sealant that’s formulated for boats, pools and spas, and can be applied and cured above and underwater. It doesn’t contain nasties like solvents and isocyanates, and you can paint and sand it once it’s fully cured for a smooth finish. Compared with traditional polyurethane products, it provides a more durable seal and bond, with superior UV resistance for staying power in the harsh Aussie sun.
TOUCH UP TILING Nothing spoils the look of a pool like missing tiles, but before you drain the pool, grab Selleys MarineFlex. Thanks to its Sil-X advanced polymer technology, it can be applied and will cure underwater, whether your pool is saltwater or chlorinated. Simply clean the loose tiles, apply sealant with a caulking gun and press them firmly back into position. Wipe off any excess sealant with a soapy solution, or a cloth if it’s under the waterline, and you’re done.
Fix common problems like skimmer box leaks and tile touch-ups
LOCK UP THE LEAKS
Selleys MarineFlex sealant in Black, $19.48/410g, I/N: 1230182, and White, $19.48/410g, I/N: 1230183
A common source of pool leakage is the gap between the plastic skimmer box and the pool wall. Luckily, with Selleys MarineFlex, it’s also a quick fix. First, lower the water level to below the bottom of the skimmer box faceplate. Remove the faceplate and check inside where the tiles meet the front of the box. Find the gap or leak, remove debris or old sealant and clean off any grime or algae. Then, use a caulking gun to apply sealant to the problem spot. Quickly tool off excess product with a cloth or spatula and replace the faceplate. The pool party is back on!
Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered. Important information: Not suitable for polypropylene, polyethylene or PTFE (Teflon). Not for polycarbonate and perspex underwater. Critical seals/repairs underwater should be regularly checked and repaired if required. Who’s not welcome?
Mosquitoes are guaranteed party poopers at any outdoor event. Certain smells, body heat, sweat, carbon dioxide and possibly dark clothing can make you a tasty mozzie morsel. Wasps reach their peak in summer. As they’re attracted to protein and sugar, an outdoor meal is a drawcard. Flies With an estimated 30,000 species of flies in Australia*, an influx of these insects is almost guaranteed at your next outdoor do. Flies spread all sorts of bacteria and pathogens – just think about the disgusting places they hang out!
Repel the pests
Rubbed, wiped, rolled or sprayed onto the skin, personal insect repellents drive away insects by using a blocker or an odour. “Repellents provide an invisible chemical barrier around the areas on the body where it is applied, repelling incoming insects,” says Kate Griffin of Rid Australia. 48 bunnings.com.au |
bunnings |
If you don’t fancy rubbing something onto your skin, plug-in, butane gas and battery-operated portable lanterns are a good option, says Mitch Connon of Gecko and Thermacell. “Thermacell repellers create a perimeter of protection around you – up to 21sqm,” explains Mitch. “These are great for backyard entertainment areas, including patios, balconies and decks, or if you’re heading away camping.”
Popular attraction
From liquid baits to zapper lights, there’s a wide range of traps and lures on offer to deal with bugs. Some electric models attract using a specially designed ultraviolet light.
bunnings
Once bugs are drawn in, a highvoltage grid zaps them. “For the best results, it is ideal to have your mosquito repeller or killer set up and working prior to dusk, to reduce the risk of mosquitoes gathering in your activity zone,” suggests Mitch. Environmentally friendly and effective, fly and wasp traps help to keep these insect populations down. “Start trapping as soon as ambient daily temperatures reach abouṫ 20°C. This is when flies generally become active and can begin reproducing,” says EnviroSafe biologist Dr Cathy Smallridge, who advises placing traps outside, away from the entertaining area and house entry points.
Northcote Pottery ‘Villa’ 400mm plastic window box planter in Graphite, $14.95, I/N: 2910219 (plants not included)
Ambient additions
As the sun goes down, nothing says summer like the scent of citronella. Available in slow-smouldering coils, candles and resort-style torches, the citrusy fragrance repels insects while candles or torches add style and atmosphere. However, while these options score points for ambience, any product with an open flame must never be left unattended.
Fragrant herbs
Blow them away
Installing an overhead outdoor fan may deter winged pests. It will also help disperse carbon dioxide, food smells and the like, which may have lured them to you in the first place. However, a fan often can’t do the job alone, so combine it with other methods of bug beaters.

Although not the most effective method, certain plants are said to give off fragrances that bugs can’t abide. Pennyroyal’s strong mint smell reputedly repels mozzies, while rosemary and basil are also valued for their insect-repelling properties – plus you can throw a few sprigs of rosemary and basil on the barbie along with your favourite eats! Lavender, geraniums and marigolds not only look lovely, but their strong scents are believed to help repel a range of insects. Help create a natural line of defence by planting them near your outdoor dining area.

Maintain a healthy lawn that stands up to the rigours of backyard games with Nylex watering products
Summer ready Enjoy fun in the sun, knowing all the practicalities are ticked off your list, with help from Hills and Nylex
T
he evenings are long, the sun is shining and all we want to do is hang outside with friends and family. But perfect entertaining spaces don’t make themselves, and as well as hosting barbecues, backyards are also the site of less glamorous activities, like laundry and gardening. Hills and Nylex products help you balance summer fun with practical necessities, for a space that’s always primed for entertaining.
LAUNDRY DAY When you’ve got a busy family, every day is laundry day, but don’t let your chore list hold you back from hosting! While retractable clotheslines can be rolled away when not in use, what do you do when you’ve got a load of wet washing and guests on the doorstep? Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.
The solution is the Hills Portable Clothesline. This is no ordinary fold-up airer; the Hills Portable Clothesline offers a huge 21m of drying space, with enough width for a single sheet and adjustable height levels to allow for longer items. Built from the same weatherproof materials as a regular outdoor version, this ingenious tool is designed to be used inside and out. What’s more, with its nifty wheels, you can easily position it in the sun for speedy drying, then move it out of sight before company calls.
CHORE LEAVE If you need to press pause on your summer fun to launder clothes, at least you can do it in style. Hills are the masters of marrying form and function.
Don’t want to have laundry on display? The Hills Portable Clothesline can be wheeled out of sight in a jiffy!

WELL WATERED For healthy gardens and a lush, green lawn, you need good watering tools. Nothing slows down watering like a hose that stubbornly curls, so the first thing on your summer prep shopping list should be a kink-resistant hose like the Nylex Flextreme. Another way to avoid kinks – while looking good, too! – is with the Nylex Auto-retractable Hose Reel, which smoothly winds the hose back into the sleek housing. Hook either of these hoses up to the Nylex Oscillating Sprinkler Plus, which delivers even water distribution to an area of up to 170sqm, so you’ll have the lawn watered and be back to lounging in a shady spot in no time.
The Hills Foldable Laundry Basket features a strong, lightweight bamboo frame and waterproof fabric, making it equally suitable for lugging wet sheets or serving as stylish storage! The Hills Premium Laundry Trolley is as good as an extra set of hands, making it so much easier to wheel wet washing to the line and giving your back a break from stooping and lifting. Finish the job with Hills’ ergonomic and slick-looking pegs, which are built to last.
BEAT THE HEAT As much as we want to spend every moment outside, sometimes the heat of high summer is just too much – or is it? With a few minutes of effort, you can hook up your home with a Nylex Misting System. Attach it to a standard hose, use the adjustable Slip-Lok fittings to direct the water where you want it to go, then enjoy the blessedly cool relief. The Nylex Misting System can drop the temperature by up to 10°C, making yours the coolest backyard in the street.

hoosing the right window dressing from the large selection on offer can be daunting. You need to consider not only looks but also the room’s practical needs. Here’s how to narrow down the options.
Identify the must-haves
Different rooms will have different requirements, so start by deciding what will be important in that space. Is it overlooked, or do your windows get a lot of direct sun? Bedrooms can demand blockout solutions, while a living room that faces a garden might only require a light covering. Oversized, small or unusually shaped glazing may need special attention. When comparing options, Martin Wilson of EasyAS Shutters suggests assessing durability, as well as sound and temperature insulation. “Certain window treatments can boost your home’s energy efficiency by blocking summer sun and preventing heat escaping in winter,” he says. “West-facing windows are more likely to require a UV solution,” adds interior designer Lynda MacDonald (thedesign chaperone.com.au). “Sheer curtains are great for reducing glare from the strong afternoon sun and won’t ruin your view, while sunscreen roller blinds can help protect soft furnishings and timber floors from fading.”
A look you’ll love
“As a general guide, blinds suit more modern spaces, shutters provide an elegant coastal feel, and curtains add softness and luxury, ideal in bedrooms,” says Lynda. Neutrals are more likely to stand the test of time, but if you have white walls, choose window dressings with the same undertone, whether warm or cool, for a harmonious look. Layering window treatments also creates versatility. “You can team a sun-filtering sheer curtain to diffuse daylight with a blockout fabric for evening privacy,” suggests Lynda. 54 bunnings.com.au |

Or look for products like Windoware’s day/night roller blinds, which offer dual functionality. “With a sheer or light filter on the back roller and a blockout on the front, they reduce glare and provide daytime sun protection or total blockout if desired,” explains Mary Halliday of Windoware.
Find the right blinds
Roller blinds are relatively inexpensive, available in a wide range of colours, simple to install and operate, and suit most interior styles. Options include blockout for privacy, light-filtering for softening glare, and sunscreen blinds, which provide daytime privacy and block UV rays. Be aware that blinds

installed inside the window reveal will have some light coming through on the side, says Mary. “To avoid this, install the blinds outside the reveal and extend past the architrave, or add a curtain to hang either side,” she suggests. “This will also provide another layer of insulation when they’re both drawn.”
White plantation shutters are an integral element of the Hamptons look and also sit well in modern spaces
Photography Sue Stubbs, styling Hazel Bondoc.
Consider shutters
Venetian blinds are budget-friendly and available in a variety of materials. Classic timber suits a casual coastal or country feel, while aluminium has a modern aesthetic, says Lynda. Another advantage is you can angle the blade to direct light where you want it. Vertical blinds are very functional for large windows or glass sliding doors. “As the slats stack behind each other when the blinds are open, they’re unobtrusive and can sit to one side or the centre to frame the window,” explains Lynda.
DIY FITTING TIPS
Blinds Most blinds come in a kit which includes brackets, screws and a tension device. First decide if you want the blind to be recess or face mounted on the window architrave. Mark where the brackets should go, choose which side you want the control mechanism, then screw in the brackets with a drill. Mount the blind on the brackets, securing the control side first. The important final step is to thread the control chain through the safety bracket, which needs to be attached to the wall.
Boasting timeless clean lines and functionality, plantation shutters have massive appeal. “They add value to your home and offer control of light and airflow through windows,” says Martin. “The blades block out 90 per cent of sunlight and offer good insulation properties, while the control bar prevents rattling or movement in the wind.” The advantage of UV-stabilised PVC varieties is they’re suitable for wet areas like kitchens and bathrooms, are easy to clean and come in pre-made or custom sizes you can install yourself.
“Material selections are key when it comes to the perfect window treatment. Whether you choose blinds, shutters or curtains, always remember to combine texture and layering”
Curtains “All curtains, decorator rods and tracks are made for ease of installation, with components in a pack with simple-to-read instructions,” says Mary. Position the rod so curtains sit at least 10-15cm above the window frame and extend 15cm either side. “This allows full coverage of the window and reduces light coming from the sides and top of the window,” she says. Shutters Some shutters are designed to be simple to buy, order and install. “Firstly, measure the window width in three places (top, middle, bottom) and the height in three places (left, middle, right) and supply the smallest measurements to the Special Orders Desk,” says Martin. You’ll only need a screwdriver and the supplied hex key, although a cordless drill with a no. 2 Phillips head bit will make installing the fixings screws even easier. Installation If you don’t want to DIY, ask the Special Orders Desk at your local store about the window furnishings installation service, which covers blinds, curtains and shutters (metro stores only).

Choosing curtains
From floaty sheers to heavier fabrics, curtains are truly versatile. “They create a lovely welcoming feel and thick fabric curtains do a great job of blanketing windows to help with insulation,” says Lynda MacDonald. To personalise the look further, Mary suggests choosing curtain rods to complement your interior style. “From natural timber to brushed brass, there’s a huge range of brackets and rods with various finials to suit tab top and eyelet curtains,” she says.

Paintwork perfection
If your doors, skirting, window frames and other timber trims are generally sound, with only minor chips or dings, repairing them is relatively quick and easy. Use a utility knife to cut away a piece of the existing paint (about the size of a 50 cent coin) and take it in store for colour matching. Fill any small dents or cracks using timber filler and, once dry, sand it flush with the surrounding surface using 120-grit abrasive paper, then touch up with paint. However, if the bottom edge of a door or window frame has absorbed water and started to rot, call in a tradie! bunnings.com.au |

Do your walls have unsightly cracks and dings? Give them a DIY facial with a ready-mixed, fast-drying filler like Selleys Spakfilla Rapid. “Use the included spatula to press the filler firmly into the crack or hole and smooth the surface,” says Natalie Breen of Selleys. “Once the filler has dried (about 30 minutes if it has been applied thinly), lightly sand back any excess.” Allow 24 hours before painting if you are using oil-based paints.
Love is blind
Are your vertical blinds looking about as neat as Stonehenge? Chances are the bead chain aligning the bottom edges has become loose. The fix is super-easy – just push the small plastic cylindrical clip on the chain back onto the receptacle at the base of the blind. Fixing Venetians looks challenging but can also be the work of minutes. If the lifting cords are frayed, but not yet broken, simply replace them: pull the lifting cords out from the bottom rail, snip the knot and use a lighter to carefully fuse new cords to the old ones. Then gently pull the new cord through and knot – simple!

Tapping any offenders down with a hammer is the quickest way to tick this job off your to-do list, but for a more permanent solution, replace nails with heavy-gauge self-drilling screws. 1 Wash and dry the glass planter. Layer the base with pebbles (roughly 2cm deep, depending on planter size). 2 Over pebbles, spread a 2cm layer of horticultural charcoal (this assists drainage and helps to control fungus, bacteria and smells). Tip: Wear a mask and gloves as the horticultural charcoal may release dust. 3 Add a similar depth layer of moss, then a layer of potting mix. The planter should be about half full. 4 Place plants on top of soil. Spread out the roots and cover with a small amount of potting mix. 5 Add sand for decoration. Spray lightly with water. Mist whenever soil feels dry.

How to do it
MATERIALS: Safety equipment (eye protection, gloves) • Cutting pliers • Two metal hanging baskets • 200mm black cable ties • LED or solar fairy lights (at least 12m long) suitable for outdoor use • Utility cord 1 Using pliers, snip chains from the hanging baskets, remove the ties holding the inner linings and take out the linings. 2 Position the rims of the basket frames together to form a sphere. Match up holes to thread cable ties, pull them tight to secure and trim excess with pliers. 3 Tuck the end of the lights into the join, then wind the string of lights around the sphere, wrapping through the frames to secure, leaving enough length to reach the power source. Note: Use solar fairy lights if there’s no outdoor power source available. 4 To hang the globe, knot utility cord to the base of basket and cut to desired length. Wind and knot the top around a stable beam.
How to do it

1 Piece together the broken item. Tip: The epoxy adhesive dries very quickly, so protect your skin by wearing disposable gloves and cover the work area with a drop sheet or cardboard. 2 Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to activate the adhesive on a timber offcut, mixing with a craft stick. With the largest unbroken piece as the base, take the largest adjacent piece, apply adhesive along the joining edge, position it against the base and hold it until the adhesive dries. 3 Working from the largest adjacent pieces to the smallest, apply adhesive along the broken edges that join with the repaired base section, holding in position until the adhesive dries. 4 Carefully scrape away excess adhesive using a sharp craft knife, holding it at 45° to run over the surface. 5 Stir gold oil-based enamel paint with a clean craft stick. Using a fine paintbrush, paint over the joins and leave to dry completely. Safety tip: Repaired items are not food-safe and might not be watertight, so must ONLY be used for decorative purposes.

Daybed
Using a pink-primed pine for DIY furniture that will live outside means it’s H3 treated to protect against termites and prevent rotting. The primer is ready for painting and doesn’t require much sanding. Use a good exterior woodworking adhesive and always choose galvanised or stainless steel fasteners and fixings to prevent rust. We had a foam mattress cut to fit our daybed.
Tip: The inside measurement between the mitred cuts is 1840mm and 1340mm, the same as the foam. 2 With the mitre saw set for straight cuts, from 42mm x 18mm pine, cut two 1650mm side cleats and two 200mm end cleats. From 88mm-square pine, cut four 410mm legs. From

Apply adhesive along all mitred cuts to position and secure end rails to the legs. 5 Reinforce joints with an 88mm x 63mm angle bracket at the corner of each rail, with the short side against the leg, positioning it below the supports so they don’t obstruct the slats. Set the frame on cardboard and use a brush to apply two coats of exterior paint all over, leaving to dry thoroughly after each. 7 Centre the support slat on the end cleats, securing through the top with 45mm screws. Set the slats evenly along the side cleats, using a 50mm spacer, securing with two screws into the ends of each slat. Tip: Prevent splitting by pre-drilling slats with a 2.5mm bit, setting the length of the bit the same as screws. 8 Move the base into position and drop in the foam mattress. Tip: Although the daybed base is designed to be left outside, we recommend the mattress be moved out of the weather when not in use.
Keep in mind... When cutting treated pine, always wear a mask, gloves and eye protection, and work in a well-ventilated area. n Our daybed was designed to bear the weight of one adult, and to be used for casual lounging. It is not suitable for use as a play area. n

n4 baby cucumbers n 100g mixed salad leaves n 4 radishes, thinly sliced HERB OIL n 1 cup loosely packed parsley leaves n 1 tbsp thyme leaves n 1/3 cup olive oil 1 Wash and pat chicken dry with paper towel. Place chicken on a chopping board, breast-side down, with legs towards you. Using kitchen shears, cut along either side of the backbone and discard it. Turn over and use your hand to push down on the chest bone to flatten. 2 Combine harissa, thyme, garlic, lemon zest and oil. Rub three-quarters of the marinade all over the chicken. Place in fridge or in a container on ice until ready to barbecue. Reserve remaining marinade for basting. 3 To make herb oil, combine all ingredients in a food processor. Process until finely chopped. Keep in a glass jar in a cool place.
4 Preheat a hooded barbecue to a medium-low heat. Place chicken, breast side-up, on barbecue grill. Close lid and cook for 45 minutes, basting with remaining marinade after 35 minutes. Slash skin on top of the chicken three times with a knife. Drizzle with oil. Use tongs to turn chicken over. Cook, with lid down, for a further 15 minutes or until cooked through. Remove and rest for 5 minutes before cutting into serving-sized pieces. 5 Break pomegranate into pieces and remove some of the seeds from some pieces. Use a vegetable peeler to slice cucumbers into ribbons. Combine leaves, cucumber, radish and pomegranate seeds in a bowl. Arrange salad on a serving platter with chicken. 6 Place remaining pieces of pomegranate around chicken. Drizzle chicken with herb oil and serve. Tip: Harissa seasoning is a Middle Eastern spice blend available from supermarkets. If using a barbecue that does not have a hood, cut chicken into pieces before cooking for best results. For a larger serving, double the quantity of marinade to coat two chickens. Cook together, as above, on a hooded barbecue with hood down until cooked through.

Bush Christmas This year, swap the usual pine for a beautiful native plant
Woolly bush
The natural pyramid shape of this evergreen shrub makes it the ideal festive season tree. Its soft, silvergreen woolly foliage gives rise to small, bright red flowers in spring and summer. Grow in a pot or in the garden, in a spot with full sun and well-drained soil.
NSW Christmas bush
Tiny, fragrant white flowers appear on this evergreen from late spring, but the merry display begins after they fall. The star-shaped sepals (the leaf-shaped structure that holds each flower) enlarge and turn red and pink. Plant in a large pot or in a spot with full sun or part shade and well-drained soil.*
Woolly bush
(Adenanthos sericeus)
NSW Christmas bush
(Ceratopetalum gummiferum)
Feed with a native-specific, slow-release fertiliser in spring and lightly prune after flowering.
The sepals also make a fantastic cut flower display, perfect when decorating for Christmas.
Dwarf f lowering gum
Lilly pilly
Dwarf flowering gum
Usually grafted to ensure dwarf size and flower, its aromatic leaves are covered with fluffy red, pink, orange or white flowers in summer. For sensational red blooms, look for ‘Summer Red’ and ‘Dwarf Red’. Position in full sun, enrich the soil with organic matter and lightly prune after flowering.
Pink, red or bronze-green flushes of new growth adorn this medium to large tree. Suitable for pots, it can be clipped into a conical shape. The ‘Straight and Narrow’ variety grows into a slender 5-8m tall pyramid; ‘Bush Christmas’ can be pruned hard to a compact 1m. FOR MORE PLANTS, VISIT bunnings.com.au/plants

INDOOR PLANTS
ouseplants not only enhance and breathe life into our living spaces, they also help purify the air. But where to start when it comes to choosing which ones to buy? While there used to be just a handful of varieties to choose from, there are now hundreds of different species and cultivars vying for a spot in your home. Here’s our top 20 to help get you started.
Fruit salad plant (Monstera deliciosa)
Philodendron ‘Rojo Congo’
A classic indoor specimen with large, glossy green leaves that develop fenestrations (holes) as the plant matures. Position in high, indirect light and use a stake to support the stems as they grow.
One of the best low-maintenance plants, with dark, lustrous foliage that emerges maroon before ageing to green. Give it a spot out of direct sunlight and dust the leaves occasionally to help them shine.
Every 7-10 days
High or medium light
Boston fern (Nephrolepis exaltata) Lush, bushy, low on maintenance and well suited to hanging baskets. Position in a spot with bright filtered light. These ferns love humidity so are perfect for bathrooms. Mist the foliage once a week and ensure the potting mix is kept moist but not saturated. Every 5-7 days

High to medium light
Heart-shaped leaves with pink or red spathes that contain flower clusters on a protruding spike. Put in a warm, bright spot in indirect light to encourage flowers. A little tolerant of neglect, so can withstand short periods without water.
A dainty relative of the fruit salad plant (M. deliciosa) with much smaller perforated, heart-shaped leaves and a climbing or trailing habit, so good for hanging baskets. Position in high, indirect light and mist regularly.
With mini pancake-shaped leaves on the ends of long, thin stems, this plant is truly a unique specimen for the home. It needs plenty of high, indirect light and watering when the top 4cm of soil feels dry.
Every 7-10 days
High to medium light
Polka dot begonia (Begonia maculata)
Alocasia (Alocasia spp.)
Deemed almost unkillable, this climbing or trailing plant can grow in low to high light. Good for hanging baskets. It can withstand short periods with little water, but don’t neglect it for too long.
Ctenanthe (Ctenanthe setosa) A decorative plant that has silver-green leaves with attractive purple-red undersides. It thrives in a humid environment in high to medium light and needs a moist, well-drained potting mix. Lack of water causes the leaves to curl inwards.
Chinese money plant (Pilea peperomioides)
A popular plant that has angel wing-shaped leaves with silver polka dots. Place in a spot with high, indirect light and keep moist. Allow the top 4cm of potting mix to dry out between waterings.
Many species make up this family of tropical plants. Their large leaves vary and may be glossy, velvety or highly textured. Position in a well-lit spot out of direct sunlight and water regularly, allowing the top 4cm of potting mix to dry out between waterings.
Devil’s ivy or pothos (Epipremnum aureum and cultivars)
For most plants, water when the potting mix is almost dry. Insert your index finger into the top of the mix down to a depth of 2.5-5cm. If it’s moist, some mix will stick to your finger, but if it’s dry, it will flake off like dust. Alternatively, use a moisture meter which can gauge how wet or dry the potting mix is in the root zone. n Indoor plants almost always look better when they are arranged together in groups. n
Swiss cheese vine (Monstera adansonii)
Syngonium (Syngonium podophyllum)
High, medium to low light
Feed plants when they are actively growing to help boost and support growth. Use a fast-acting liquid fertiliser or a slow- or controlledrelease granular product. n Fungus gnats are those little black flies that can be seen dancing around the top of potting mixes. While harmless, they’re annoying. Treat with Eco-Neem or a physical barrier like Yates Gnat Barrier to help keep them under control. n
Flamingo flower (Anthurium andraeanum)
An incredibly undemanding plant that will trail or climb if allowed. Its arrowhead-shaped leaves may be patterned and coloured green, white or pink. It loves a brightly lit spot out of direct sunlight. Every 7-10 days

Kentia palm (Howea forsteriana) A beautiful, upright palm with graceful, arching fronds that is tolerant of low light. It’s ideal for imparting a lush, tropical vibe to a living space. Every 7-10 days
Every 5-7 days
Peace lily (Spathiphyllum spp.) A low-maintenance choice that tolerates low light conditions, although it does need adequate natural light to produce its attractive white ‘flowers’ or spathes. Allow the top 4cm of potting mix to dry out between waterings.
Medium to low light
Every 7-10 days
Calathea (Calathea spp.) The foliage in the many varieties of this tropical plant may feature blocks of colour, stripes or even a mosaic-style pattern. It thrives in high, indirect light but can tolerate lower light levels, too. Mist regularly to increase humidity, or leaf edges may become crispy and brown. Every 7-10 days
High to medium light
High, medium or low light
Zanzibar gem (Zamioculcas zamifolia) An attractive and hardy specimen with glossy dark-green leaves. It’s said to thrive on neglect – it needs little water and is tolerant of low light conditions – making it one of the easiest indoor plants to grow.

Every 14+ days
Medium to low light
Dragon tail (Epipremnum pinnatum)
Rubber plant (Ficus elastica)
Dieffenbachia (Dieffenbachia spp.)
Fiddle leaf fig (Ficus lyrata)
Glossy deep-green leaves start off elliptical and whole, and split as the plant matures. As it grows, it creeps along the ground, so will eventually rigidly ‘trail’ over the sides of the pot. Give it a bright spot out of direct sunlight.
This has the potential to grow into a large tree, but will remain compact when kept as a potted indoor specimen. Tolerates low light, but prefers a well-lit position out of direct sunlight. Water when the potting mix is dry.
The luscious leaves are typically green and yellow, and patterned with specks, blotches or lines. Grows best in high, indirect light, but can tolerate low light conditions. Keep potting mix consistently moist.
A popular plant with large, leathery leaves that emerge from a single or multi-stemmed trunk. In order to thrive, it needs lots of high, indirect light, regular misting to maintain humidity and watering when the top 4cm of potting mix is dry.
