Need help pulling together the perfect scheme for your space? Try these inspirational and enduring looks

ith almost limitless options around, making material selections for the busiest rooms in the house can become overwhelming. Refine the decision process for your kitchen, bathroom or laundry by beginning with the ‘big picture’. Jane Wright, Bunnings trend and design manager, suggests determining the overall look and feel you want before getting mired in the nitty-gritty. “Consider the colours and materials you’re drawn to and what style will complement the era and design of your home,” she says. To help pinpoint your style, try creating a moodboard. Gather images of looks you love, then whittle them down to your favourites. Next, collect samples of finishes to suit the scheme, such as flooring and paint swatches, as well as specifics for that room; for example, a cabinet door in the style and colour you prefer. Try them next to each other to see how they look, and swap items in and out until you’re happy. Still require inspiration? Hamptons If you love the Hamptons look, you’re not alone. “Both neutral, soft colour palettes with Shaker-style doors, as well as timber-look cabinetry paired with soft and bright white tones, are aesthetics that are in high demand in Australian homes, speaking to both the Hamptons and Scandi themes,” reveals Simon Warmington, Bunnings national buyer, kitchens, laundry and
appliances. Elegant, east US coastal style is timeless and can be amended to suit homes of different eras. Colourwise, choose white, soft greys and blues from duck egg to navy to go with brushed nickel hardware and tapware. For benchtops, look for a marble or stone-effect finish, and introduce reflective surfaces such as glass in cabinetry or lighting. Beautiful details,
such as wall panelling, ceramic sinks and statement lights, are a hallmark of the Hamptons style. Subway (rectangular) tiles are the traditional choice – lay them in a herringbone or basketweave pattern for a different look, or substitute for luxe-look marble mosaics. For added texture, introduce rattan, timber and wicker through accessories, furniture and lighting. }

Scandi “Minimalist and neutral palettes are here to stay,” says Simon Warmington. So if you want a style that will last for the long haul, the pared-back Nordic look just might be the perfect fit. Functional with understated elegance, Scandi colours tend towards pale grey and white, with light-coloured timber in cabinetry or flooring giving it a warm, liveable feel. Contemporary Less is often more for this style, where simplicity combines with subtle sophistication. Crisp white and matt black are the go-to shades for a modern monochrome scheme. “Contemporary bathrooms and kitchens vary from classic white, paired with statement terrazzo, to stone- and concrete-look floors and benchtops teamed with floating timber cabinetry,” says Jane Wright. Industrial Another style that continues to appeal celebrates the rugged good looks of warehouses and factories, with exposed rafters, concrete, reclaimed wood, iron and brick. This industrial look works well in both modern and older-style homes, where renovating materials may be repurposed. In kitchens, go for concretelook benchtops, black cabinetry, open shelving, big pendant lights and vintage bar stools. In bathrooms, if the style and construction of your home allows, try exposed bricks and pipes, white subway tiles, black steel-framed mirrors and glass shower panels. “This material mix works well with a vintage timber vanity, square edged basins and tapware in pewter or gunmetal,” says Jane Wright.
Country When combined with creamy whites, soft greens or blue-greys, materials like brick, stone and timber deliver country charm. In laundries, try wet-room friendly, painted panelling, and a timber benchtop with a deep, steel or ceramic tub. In a bathroom, put a traditional pedestal vanity and claw foot bath against simple tiles in a herringbone or brick pattern. Rich and intense hues can pack a memorable punch, says Simon Warmington. “Bolder and more striking colours such as black, greys, rich greens, blues and timber-look cabinetry are making their way into people’s kitchens.” Warmer tones like dusty pinks have also been trending in interior design for a few years now and can look striking used either on their own or teamed with a contrasting colour. Try one shade on a main run of cabinets with a different one on the island, or base cabinets in one hue and wall cupboards in another. Or opt for a moody look with cabinets and walls all in the one colour. Not brave enough to go big and bold in the kitchen? Consider a statement scheme in a smaller space. “A powder room is the perfect place to add playful personality, with colourful wallpaper or tiles and a statement basin or wall light,” says Jane. Balance the look with plenty of natural light and neutral surfaces – and remember that paint your own cabinetry is a forgiving choice if you don’t get it right first time. ◆

s the busiest room in the house, the kitchen is often top of a home owner’s renovation wish list. Whether yours needs a simple cosmetic lift or a complete overhaul, you’ll need a plan of attack. Here are eight steps to guide the way to your new dream kitchen.

1 Flooring
Assess your space The first step is to evaluate your existing kitchen. Identify what works in the space and what doesn’t, if there’s anything worth keeping, or if you need to gut it and start afresh. “Functionality is key to a great kitchen, so when planning the new space, take your lifestyle into account: how you cook, entertain, the number of people using the kitchen and your requirements,” suggests Briony Mikrou of Kaboodle Kitchen. Set yourself up for success by keeping the principles of the working triangle in mind, adds Mike Smith, Bunnings in home services state manager. “For ease of use, the cooktop, fridge and sink, which make up the working triangle, should be positioned at a comfortable distance, no more than 2.5m from one another,” he says. “Regular go-to locations like the microwave, pantry and bins should also be given a prime position.” The kitchen’s location within the home and adjoining spaces should also influence its configuration, materials and colours, to create a zone that flows and feels cohesive with the rest of the interiors.

Choose the layout The size and shape of the room will often determine the best layout. An island kitchen features single line or L-shaped cabinetry and a central freestanding bench. “This offers a social space, with the island doubling as food prep and informal dining zone, yet it does need a generous floor area,” says Mike. With cabinetry and benchtops on three sides and often a peninsula, the U-shape works in large and small spaces. “This is the easiest shape to perfect the working triangle and has ample bench space, but may feel closed off and multiple corners can create challenges in accessing storage spaces,” adds Mike. In apartments and linear footprints, straight line or galley kitchens can pack a lot into a small space. “Online planning tools can be really helpful to visualise layouts and get a sense of how they will function,” says Briony. The 3D Kaboodle Planner can also give you a quick design and quote. Even compact kitchens can include a casual dining area by allowing an overhang on the benchtop.

Factor in storage Ideally, storage will be specifically tailored to your needs – if you’re a baker, for example, you may have a pile of baking tins to stash. Look at exactly what you need to store, and where – everyday items like spices should be near the cooktop, while infrequently used serving dishes can be kept on a high shelf. To maximise space, consider installing tall cabinetry, adding practical and stylish open shelving, or building a niche into the end of the island. “The pantry is the most frequently used storage area, so ensure it’s easily accessible and functional, with tiered pantry pull-out baskets or a designated walk-in space,” advises Kaboodle’s Briony Mikrou. Incorporating internal storage systems will also help maximise storage capacity. “Internal wireware systems and even drawer dividers in a kitchen can really compartmentalise the space, adding that extra element of organisation,” says Simon Warmington, Bunnings national buyer, kitchens, laundry and appliances. Pick your finishes When choosing a benchtop, you’ll have to consider the thickness, profile, required lengths and the pros and cons of various materials. Engineered stone options are durable and beautiful, and can replicate more delicate materials like marble; for more conservative budgets, laminates can achieve a similar look. “Natural timber and bamboo benches are a great way to add warmth,” says Simon. While timber requires regular maintenance, it adds raw appeal and, like laminate, can be DIY fitted. “It’s important to consider surfaces that are durable and easy to clean,” Simon adds. “There are laminates with scuff resistance and anti-fingerprint technology so your benchtop will easily stand the test of time.” Cost-effective options for cabinetry include melamine and thermoformed doors, says Briony. Glass and engineered stone splashbacks will need to be custom ordered and fitted; tiled splashbacks can be relatively quick and easy to install.

Select a sink and tap “Not all sink types are compatible with all benchtop materials, so discuss suitability with a designer,” suggests Mike Smith. “Weigh up the advantages of a single, 1.5 or double-bowl sink, whether to include a drainer, and choose a tap in a complementary style and finish. A tall tap, with adjustable head and pull-out vegie spray, offers great flexibility.” Fitting options for sinks include drop-in, where the lip overlaps the benchtop, or under-mounted, where the benchtop comes right to the edge of the bowl. This option is less obtrusive than a drop-in version, a bonus in a small kitchen. Sinks are an often-overlooked creative opportunity. While stainless steel is a time-honoured favourite, you might also consider a granite composite or ceramic sink, and colours ranging from gunmetal grey to gold. Taps are another, more subtle, way to make a style statement; find stylish mixers in chrome or steel, but also in black, white and shades of gold. A full renovation is a chance to take your sink area to the next level, with a mixer that also delivers filtered water.

Size up appliances Whether reusing existing appliances or installing new models, you’ll need the dimensions early in the planning stage to ensure the perfect fit. Appliance location may also affect electrical outlets and plumbing, so discuss potential limitations or requirements with your kitchen designer or builder. When buying new appliances, consider what could improve the kitchen’s design and usefulness; is it worthwhile upgrading the oven and cooktop, switching from gas to induction, or installing an integrated rather than a freestanding dishwasher? A new cooktop location may mean changing your rangehood. Mike adds, “If considering switching from a recirculating to a ducted model, keep in mind it will need to be flued outside the house.”

MEASURE UP
Knowing key measurements can help you get a feel for what’s possible. “Standard bench depth is 600mm, yet for an island or peninsula, you may want to go for 900mm-1200mm, particularly if you plan to regularly eat, create a homework zone, or use the bench as a working space,” says Mike. A deeper bench can also allow for cupboards on the front of the island, which can be convenient for storing tableware and glassware. Allow a 1000mm walkway either side of an island bench. For ease of cooking and washing up, provide 500mm set-down space alongside the oven and sink. The standard size for appliances like ovens, cooktops, rangehoods and dishwashers is 600mm, although different widths are available to suit lifestyle and space, such as 900mm stoves and 450mm dishwashers. Fridges, however, vary significantly in depth and width, so choose your model early in the design stage.

Plot power points To determine where electrical points need to be installed, map the location of fixed appliances and where small appliances will be used. “I advise including at least one double power point for each section of benchtop and adding them at either end of the island or tucked underneath a breakfast bar,” says Mike. “If you plan to store and use appliances in the same spot in the butler’s pantry, a series of outlets along the wall will enhance convenience,” he adds.

Layer lighting To perfect the lighting scheme, Mike suggests including layers of light to cover all your needs. “For general ambient lighting, use ceilingmounted fittings that throw light in all directions or add flush-mount downlights spaced approximately 1.2m-1.5m apart,” he says. “Use pendants over the island teamed with undercabinet strip lighting for effective task lighting above workbenches.” Accent lighting will turn up the luxe factor, and for ambience after dark, incorporate wall sconces and LED strip lighting at the base of benches. ◆ bunnings.com.au

The key to a great reno is preparation. Consider all the elements to create a bathroom you’ll love for the long term

elative to its size, the bathroom is among the most complicated spaces to renovate, so you want to make sure you’ve thought of everything before you dive in. To help plan your project from start to finish, take a look at our checklist. Budget and vision Start with your budget and goals. Bunnings national bathroom buyer Dan Gibney says, “The size of your budget can influence whether you’re able to undertake just a partial cosmetic update or a full

renovation.” This initial planning stage is also a good time to work out your key wants and needs. “If it’s a family bathroom, will you need a bathtub, double vanities, extra storage? Are there existing issues in the bathroom, affecting how it functions, which need to be addressed? Whether you’re planning to sell soon, or stay in the house long term, may also influence the changes you make,” says Dan. To help with costings, try putting together a moodboard with pictures of styles you like. Include bigger items like vanities, smaller fittings such as taps, colour swatches for tiles and walls, and accessories including lights.
Love the layout “Using the existing floor plan will keep costs down, allowing more to be spent on fixture upgrades,” explains Dan. Of course, if the layout has problems, redesigning the space can be worth the cost. “If revising the layout, consider sight lines as you enter the room. Vanities and baths make great statement pieces, but you may want the toilet and shower hidden from view.” When planning where your bathroom fixtures will go, remember to allow adequate room for doors to open and enough clearance around toilets. You could also use the opportunity to include extra storage, like a built-in shower niche.

Be space savvy A priority for most bathroom renovations is creating a more spacious feel, which can be achieved with an improved layout, clever fixtures and the addition of a window or skylight to boost the room’s natural light and outlook. It can also be helpful, where possible, to recess fixtures like a shaving cabinet into the wall cavity, maximising available space in the room. In smaller bathrooms, consider a back-to-wall bath, which has the elegance of a freestanding style, yet is more space-smart and simpler to clean around. Wall-hung fixtures like the vanity and toilet leave more of the floor area clear and create a sense of spaciousness. Visual tricks also include using large-format tiles to minimise grout lines and opting for fixed glass panels, rather than an enclosed shower screen. “Not only does it make a small bathroom feel larger, it reduces cleaning,” says Dan.

Rounded shapes soften the functional spaces. Carry the theme through with curved tapware, a circular mirror and round basin; for similar, try the Mondella ‘Resonance’ basin.
Fixtures and features Weigh up functionality and aesthetics when choosing materials and fixtures. For a cohesive look, Dan Gibney recommends selecting matching tapware and accessories with coordinated plugs, waste and bottle traps if needed. “These little details can make a big difference to the finish,” he says. Choosing a similar shape and style for your bath and basin will also create seamless appeal. Aside from good looks, you need to assess showers, taps and basins for practicality, longevity and ease of cleaning.

SCHEDULE IT
Dan recommends setting a project timeline to help ensure your renovation runs smoothly. “Shower screens and vanities can take time to manufacture if you’re going with a custom option, so factor this into your schedule to avoid extended delays,” he says. Organise tiles in advance, ordering an additional 10 per cent or so to cover wastage, and lock in specialist trades early.
Storage matters Assess your storage needs and choose a vanity, shelving and towel rails accordingly. A floor-mounted vanity can provide more storage space, yet may dominate a smaller bathroom. Another option could be a slim floating vanity, supplemented by a couple of open shelves. The basin you choose can also impact storage. “Inset or semi-recessed basins can reduce storage capacity within the vanity, so a better option may be a countertop basin,” advises Dan. Think about the position of power outlets too, making sure they’re within reach of the mirror for morning routines, and consider having one inside the vanity for charging toothbrushes out of sight. Position towel rails or hooks in arm’s reach of the shower and bath. Light fantastic Bathroom lighting should include sufficient illumination for grooming plus more moody lighting for unwinding. Include task lighting at the vanity, ideally with wall sconces either side of the mirror to avoid shadows. Three-inone fan, light and heat combinations, such as the IXL Tastic range, are efficient and compact, and provide a powerful light. For ambience, consider strip lighting underneath cabinets and mirrors, or pendants. In rooms without windows, skylights can provide natural light and ventilation. There are strict regulations around electrical fittings in bathrooms, so talk to your electrician about appropriate options and safe placement. ◆

With careful planning you can make the most of the zone, ensuring it not only looks great, but functions smoothly and saves you time. Here’s how to plan like a pro and create a laundry you’ll love. Location When choosing where to position the laundry, consider your lifestyle and your interior/exterior layout. In bigger homes, a space where there’s direct access to the

If you live in Western Australia and want to integrate your laundry into your kitchen, you’ll need to allow for a separate laundry tub, too.

A common layout is a straight-line design, with a single benchtop between a run of base and wall cabinets. “Incorporating a sink at one end and tall pantry-sized cabinetry at the opposite end, to store a broom and ironing board, is ideal,” says Jane Wright, Bunnings trend and design manager. “If space is tight, you may need to compromise on sink and bench size – just ensure your chosen sink and tap can fill buckets.”
Appliances Before settling on a design, choose your appliances. A key decision is whether to opt for a top or front loader washing machine. If you want to maximise bench space by placing the washer underneath, you’ll need a front loader which, while often more expensive, generally uses less water, is more energy efficient and is designed to fit into a standard kitchen cabinet space. For larger families, top loaders may be preferable as they may be available in larger capacities and have shorter wash cycles. If space is really tight, a washer/dryer combo is a good solution.

Introduce colour or pattern on the splashback, or VJ wall panelling painted with a mould-inhibiting paint. Storage and organisation Laundries tend to be used to store everything from chemicals, linen and towels to pet supplies and cleaning equipment, so aim to maximise cabinetry and use wall space with systems like an ironing centre. If space allows, try a combination of over- and under-bench cabinets/drawers, and a tall cupboard. You might also like to include slide-out laundry bins for sorting and storing piles of washing and a rail to hang wet clothes. Wall cupboards or high shelves within a broom cupboard are a sensible inclusion in a family home to keep cleaning products out of children’s reach. ◆
Consider where you’ll set up an ironing board or where you need power outlets for appliances. If the room doesn’t have an opening window or external door, an extractor fan will help keep the space ventilated. Think about how to keep the area clean and tidy. “Undermount sinks have a minimalist modern look, plus they are easy to wipe down,” says Dan. Choose durable materials. “Look for laminates with scuff resistance and anti-fingerprint technology so your benchtop and cabinetry will stand the test of time,” advises Jane. “Alternatively, if using a timber benchtop or shelf, keep in mind it needs to be sealed and recoated every two years so it’s resistant to moisture and stains.” For splashbacks, opt for water-resistant or waterproof finishes such as tiles, glass or polymer. If you crave Hamptons style, you can also find VJ-style panelling that is specially for wet areas.
Hanging mops and brooms from hooks is a neat trick in small areas, as is using any available wall space for shelving.

lthough it can be tempting to hit the tools – or head in store – as soon as you’ve decided to renovate, the first and most important step is thorough planning. This can help to reduce overexpenditure and stress throughout the project. Here’s our checklist to a dream renovation.

Set a clear objective Determine the aim of the renovation, advises Mike Smith, Bunnings in home services state manager. “Are you planning a bathroom update to get your house ready to sell? Do you need a quick

Define wants versus needs Write a list of ‘must haves’ and ‘like to haves’ to prioritise spending. Once you’ve budgeted for essentials, such as tiles, taps and a tub in the bathroom, the less essential updates – like heated towel rails – can be considered. Ranking your wish list can also help you decide where to save in order to splurge. “You might choose to use off-the-shelf cabinetry to offset the cost of the luxury stone benchtop you’ve always wanted,” says Mike.

Budget wisely Establish a set budget and stick to it. To avoid overcapitalising, use your current property value as a guide, suggests Jane. For a bathroom renovation, the formula is about 2 per cent of a property’s value; a kitchen renovation is about 3 per cent. “The complexity of the space, the level of fittings and finishes and the labour involved will influence a project’s cost,” she says. Financing the project is likely to be straightforward if funds are coming from cash savings, advises Mike.

RENOVATING
GOLDEN RULES Start with a considered plan. Design with the future in mind,
whether planning to stay or sell. Set aside a contingency fund of about 5-10 per cent of your total budget to cover unexpected costs, advises Jane. For a larger scale reno, best to allow 10-20 per cent. Don’t overcapitalise, cautions Mike. “Talk to experts to get a sense of what your home is worth and how much you should spend on key areas like the kitchen and bathroom.” Get several quotes from trades and compare like with like. Don’t rush the project. Take time to fully plan the design and use the right people and materials for the job. Measure accurately. “If you’re not confident how to correctly measure up, for example kitchen cupboards and benchtops, enlist an expert, like a member from the In Home Services team,” suggests Jane. “Generally, expect a kitchen renovation to take between two and nine weeks, and bathrooms and laundries between one and three weeks.” To help the renovation stay on track, maintain good communications with your builder, be available onsite to answer questions, and organise as many materials and fixtures as possible in advance. ◆

Call in the experts Major renovation work to a kitchen, bathroom or laundry requires the skills of qualified licensed trades, including a plumber and an electrician, so organise them ahead of the scheduled start date. The size of the project and your skill level will affect how much painting and general carpentry you can do yourself, or whether you’ll need a builder or cabinetry installer. For beginner renovators, signing up a designer or experienced builder as project manager can help the job run smoothly.
