Welcome

A word from our editor Welcome to the very first issue of Bunnings New Zealand magazine. We aim to bring you a whole raft of inspiration, information and ideas to make your home the place you want it to be – no matter whether you’re an owner or a renter, a DIY whizz or belong firmly in the ‘do it for

me’ camp. I sit somewhere in the middle. If it’s a bigger job I’ll hand it over in a heartbeat, but I’m happy to hang wallpaper, tackle simple DIY and paint. Talking of which, advances in paint technology mean you can give almost anything a new look. Check out our story on page 48, where we explore the options in specialty paints. Everyone loves a good makeover, and Kathy and Stephen’s kitchen has had a fab one – it’s now a chic, modern space with great storage. See how they did it on page 42. One of the nicest things about putting this edition together was discovering the treasures in store. A few are included here, but you’ll find plenty more, from shopping in timeless white, to a very cool selection of lights on page 38. Enjoy the issue!

T

Home harvest Cultivate your backyard as a mini orchard and reap the rewards of fresher-than-fresh homegrown fruit

bunnings.co.nz

|

bunningsnz

23

Dream it Grow your own produce

N

o Kiwi backyard is complete without at least one fruit tree, and with varieties of every size and for every growing region, it’s possible for just about any garden and balcony to have one. Grow them in pots or in the ground, and use them as decorative features. Winter is a great time to plant deciduous fruit trees, giving them plenty of time to settle in before spring.

Fruit salad

With an abundance of fruit trees available, where do you start? “The first question is space,” says Kate Marshall of Waimea Nurseries, New Zealand’s fruit tree specialists. “Do you have room to grow a large tree? If not, consider smaller growing trees, like the range of dwarf stone fruit varieties (like ‘Flavourzee’ nectarine and ‘Garden Lady’ peach), which only grow one to two metres high and one to two metres wide, and produce full-sized fruit.” Many trees are self-pollinating but a small number do need a second tree to assist with pollination. If you’ve only room for one tree, ensure it’s self-pollinating. “All varieties of nectarines are self-pollinating, and the ‘Flatto’ nectarine ‘Button Bright’ is perfect

for kids’ lunchboxes with their flat donut shape and sweet taste,” adds Kate. Citrus, peaches, figs and some pear and plum varieties also self-pollinate, but most apples need a compatible pollinating partner to produce a good crop of fruit, so make room for two delicious varieties. The ‘Ballerina’ range of columnar apple trees are great for squeezing more than one tree into a tight space. Espaliering a tree – where you train it to grow along a wall or fence – looks pretty and saves space, great for small gardens. Virtually any fruit tree can be espaliered, but certain trees, like apples, pears, citrus and olives, work better than others.

Essential ingredients

Climate: Always check the plant’s label to see if it’s okay for your area; stores tend to carry suitable trees for your zone. Potted fruit trees can sometimes be brought inside or moved to a protected spot when it’s cold. Location: Fruit trees need a sunny spot, with at least six to eight hours of full sun per day. Soil: Good drainage is a must. Improve poor soil with gypsum, and lots of compost and organic matter. If your soil is heavy clay, grow in pots or raised garden beds. 

Cover your fruit trees with netting to protect them from birds

Pick of the bunch

Fruit trees can often be grown out of their preferred zone, as long as similar conditions are provided or met. The following is a general indication of what grows where. Check instore for self-pollinating varieties. Cool climates

Even with homegrown fruit, it’s important to wash it well before you eat or cook it

PRO TIP Citrus in pots can flourish for years, under the right conditions. They enjoy full sun, good drainage, and should be kept well watered, especially in the warmer months

Citrus can take up to three years to begin producing fruit. “Remove fruitlets on young trees to allow energy to be focused on root development and branching growth,” says Kate. As a guide, fruit trees can be harvested within two to five years. Pruning: “Most fruit trees will benefit from a good prune when they are dormant in winter,” adds Kate. “This will help improve the quality and amount of fruit, create a strong network of branches and help to prevent pest and disease issues.”

Photography (top left) Gap Photos/Leigh Clapp, (above) Gap Photos/John Glover, (top right) Gap Photos/Jonathan Buckley

Planting time: Deciduous fruit trees, including stone fruit, apples, pears and quince, can be bought in winter bare-rooted (without soil) and planted straightaway. Before planting a bare-rooted tree, it’s a good idea to prune it. Hold the tree in one hand and, with the other, prune away 50 per cent of the top branches. In regions with frosts, plant citrus trees in spring; if not they can be planted at any time of year. Planting preparation: Improve the soil with organic matter, such as compost and well-rotted manure. Dig a hole one-anda-half times the size of the root system. Replace some soil to create a cushion in the centre of the hole, then position the tree and fill in around it. Firm the soil around the base and water in well. If planting in pots, ensure the container is big enough and use good-quality potting mix. Fertiliser: In periods of active growth and fruit development, feed fruit trees well with a complete flower and fruit fertiliser, such as Scotts Osmocote, a controlled-release plant food for fruit, citrus, trees and shrubs, or a liquid version like Scotts Osmocote Boost + Feed Citrus and Fruit. Harvest: The time frame from planting to harvest varies depending on the fruit type.

Uninvited guests

There will be unwanted visitors on your fruit trees, typically during warmer months as the trees are budding or fruiting. They can differ from tree to tree, so it’s a good idea to get a proper diagnosis from a garden expert in store. Generally, most sap-sucking bugs, such as aphids, mealy bugs and scale, can be treated with a broad-range insecticide, like Yates Nature’s Way Organic Citrus, Vegie and Ornamental Insect Spray, but always

check the label or ask in store if you’re not sure. Codling moth is a common pest of apples and similar fruits, so it’s a good idea to take preventative action. The larvae (caterpillars) tunnel into the fruit and can, if you’re not careful, ruin an entire harvest. Regularly inspect the tree and discard any infested fruit. Spray trees thoroughly with a targeted spray, like Yates Success Ultra, and remove loose bark from branches to reduce hiding areas for cocoons. ◆

Plan it Reno need-to-know

Building consent 101 Your reno project is on the cusp of reality but first it needs the big tick from the powers that be. Read on for the info you need to push through the paperwork

S

o you’ve decided to build. Whatever that may look like – a swimming pool ready in time for summer, installing a woodburner to ward off winter, or building a fence to keep out a nosy neighbour – all building work in New Zealand must comply with the Building Code, and for most projects this will mean obtaining a building consent.

How to apply You can pick up an application pack from your council or download one from their website. But before you get underway, at this stage it pays to ask your council what your particular project’s application will entail, and if there are any special requirements. The more knowledge gathered before you start, the smoother the process is likely to be.

Some of the information you’ll need to provide is what your project is about and all work involved in it, including the type of building work, its intended use, the extent of the building and any site-specific information. You’ll also need evidence of ownership, black and white drawings made to a professional standard with an appropriate scale and clarity, construction specifications and any relevant evidence of approval and certificates. Most councils will have a project-specific checklist that you will need to complete and attach to your application, too. Of course, you will also need to include the fee. These vary depending on the council, the complexity of your project and the value of the proposed finished building. Visit your local council’s website for a list of building consent fees and a fee estimate calculator. A word of advice: if you are not

Submitting a building consent application can be a confusing process and you might want to enlist the help of a professional to guide you through it bunnings.co.nz

a building professional yourself, enlist the help of someone who understands the Building Code to complete your application, to make sure there are no unnecessary delays. How long it takes Once your application has been received, your council has 20 working days to process it. The clock stops on this if more information is needed in order to complete the application, and an additional fee may be required if this is the case. When your local council is confident your proposed work passes the requirement of the Building Code, your building consent will be issued. From this point, you need to start your building work within 12 months or your consent will lapse. Starting from the day consent is granted, you have two years to complete your project. Doing your reading and asking questions of professionals and council members before you submit your application will definitely mean fewer headaches in the consent process. Then you’ll be warming your feet by that woodburner in no time. ¿

Words Nikki Birrell. Photography iStock

Do you need one? Most building work will require consent, and there is a summary list of what types do at building.govt.nz. While there is some basic work that may be exempt, such as laying a patio or installing a kitchen cabinet, it’s best to always check with your local authority to be sure, as each council may have different requirements.

Before starting your dream reno, check to see if you need consent

Grey area

Once considered conservative, grey has cemented its place as the ultimate neutral, able to imbue a room with equal amounts of warmth and glamour

29

T

he Switzerland of colours, grey is a neutral, balanced hue that traverses a spectrum of shades. At the warmer end, slate grey, dark taupe and smoky grey create a serene atmosphere, while cooler hues like dove, oyster and pearl make spaces feel bright and spacious. Thanks to its associations with nature (think stormy skies, rough seas, pebbles in a pond), grey also works well with natural materials like timber and stone. Why we love it There’s no doubt about it, Kiwis are feeling grey – in a good way. Davina Harper, colour expert at Dulux, says it’s second only to white when it comes to their most popular paint shades. Versatility is one of its biggest drawcards. “It’s chameleon-like,”

says Davina, “which means it can suit nearly every style of home.” Grey is used increasingly as a hero hue, not only in living rooms and bedrooms, but in the bathroom too. There’s a shade for every mood; soft, silvery hues with undertones of mauve and blue lend elegance to any interior, while greys with warm, reddy undertones create a cosy feel.

Grey effects Grey is a much more complex colour than most people imagine, explains PPG colour category manager Rachel Lacy. “They are not simply varying mixtures of white and black but a combination of pigments. Greys, like whites, can be cool or warm. They range from warm, umber-greys to much cooler blue-greys,” she says. With that in mind, which mood you’d like to create and how you use a room will determine which shade of grey you 

should choose. “The available light in a room – is it natural or artificial, whether you are going to be in the space during the day or mostly at night, and how you want the space to feel, are the drivers for colour choice,” explains Rachel Lacy. For rooms with plenty of natural light, a cool grey such as stone, pewter or concrete is a good choice, as they make a small space appear brighter. Warm greys – such as taupe, pebble and smoke – work best in open-plan areas and where you want to create a cosy ambience. Mix and match Grey pairs well with myriad colours, from jewel tones to citruses and soft peaches and pinks, while a monochromatic interior combining light and dark greys is also impactful. “The wonderful thing about greys is that they work well with pretty much any other colour,” says Rachel.

“A cooler grey with a deep yellow, or a warm, umber-based grey with the red/pink shades of orange, are combinations that have stood the test of time.” On trend “Over the past few years, we’ve seen a trend away from some of the cooler shades towards warmer, earthier greys on both the inside and the outside of the home,” says Davina Harper, adding that a mixture of grey and beige tones in particular is becoming increasingly popular. This rings true for stylist Michelle Halford (thedesignchaser.com) who loves incorporating grey in her interiors. “I find that soft shades of grey with beige tones create a particularly warm and calming feel.” ‘Greige’ colours are easy to live with and pair beautifully with warm whites and neutrals, especially organic, earthy shades such as sand, tan and putty, she

says. Michelle has also been experimenting with grey paint colours that have textural finishes for added depth and interest. Step outside A failsafe exterior colour, grey suits a variety of house styles, from modern to period-style homes. Darker tones – charcoal, concrete, slate – add an air of drama to an exterior, while lighter greys such as silver, dove and oyster create a tranquil feel. Softer hued light greys offer an alternative to traditional white exteriors, while mid-tones are a practical choice, as they tend to conceal marks and dust. Greys will tend to appear a few shades lighter in bright sunlight, so you may need to go a shade or two darker to get the depth of colour you need. As always, use sample pots and observe the results at different times of the day and night, under artificial light, before you buy. ¿

Burn, baby, burn

The oldest form of heating has come a long way, but there is still something magical about a wood-burning heater

here’s nothing like a fireplace to warm your home, and the good news is that many of today’s wood heaters are actually eco-friendly – firewood is a renewable resource. Although particle emissions do contribute to pollution, regulations in New Zealand today require that all wood burners installed have an emission of less than 1.5 grams of particles per kilogram of dry wood burnt, and a thermal efficiency of greater than 65 per cent*. Couple this with a bit of best-practice know-how and you’ll have an energy-efficient home heating system to keep you cosy and dry all winter.

Spoilt for choice Start by measuring your space. The nominal area that a wood heater will keep pleasantly toasty is among the first features mentioned in its product info. There are two main categories: radiant wood heaters and

convection heaters. A radiant heater transfers energy in straight lines from the hot outer skin of the unit. It’s a good choice for a large or highceilinged space as it keeps the heat lower. By comparison, a convection heater uses a fan

Choosing a wood heater

What you need to know You’ll need to get building consent from your local council before you install a wood burner. You should also check to find out if there are any extra requirements for solid fuel burners in your area. If an illegally installed wood burner causes a fire, it may invalidate your insurance cover. “We recommend you have your wood burner installed by a professional who can advise the right model and best placement,” says Mike Chilton, president of New Zealand Home Heating Association (nzhha.co.nz). “The NZHHA is the best place to find a retailer or technician with the right qualifications in your area.”

If your wood burner generates more heat than you need for one room, you have the option to install a heat transfer kit, which pumps the warm air into other rooms in your house. These kits are available from Bunnings, but it’s recommended that you get in touch with a professional tradesperson to see if it is the right choice for your home, as there are many factors that can affect how well they work. to circulate air around the firebox and propel the warmth out. They blow hot air, which is great for a well-insulated room, but it can otherwise dissipate into the rest of the house. Decide whether you want the heater built into your wall. A freestanding wood heater gives more flexibility than an in-built one and is better at heating a large, open area. Even if you choose a fan-forced convection model, it will still radiate more heat from the flue and firebox into its immediate surroundings.

In-built heaters have a more compact footprint, requiring a smaller hearth. You can also purchase a zero-clearance kit if you wish to have one installed into a timber stud wall. Wood burners installed on properties less than two hectares in size must meet emissions and efficiency standards, so be sure to choose a Ministry for the Environment authorised product. Visit mfe. govt.nz/air/home-heating-and -authorised-wood-burners/ burners for more information.

When to clean Environment Canterbury Better Burning adviser Mark Bourassa has some tips for keeping your wood burner working efficiently. “We recommend giving it a maintenance check each year before you start using it for the cooler months,” he says. Some of the signs to look out for that indicate maintenance is required include: glass on the door or the inside lining of the firebox starting to look black; the door not shutting tightly or the glass is loose. A dull thud sound (as opposed to a ‘ring’ sound) when you tap the flue, or soot leaking from the joints, means a chimney sweeping is overdue.

Good wood

DO: Good wood is key for an efficient clean-burning fire. Mark Bourassa says, “Plantation pine, Douglas fir and blue gum are the best woods to use and mix to get your fire just right. Old man pine tends to smoke a lot, so use only for kindling and burn sparingly with other wood.” DON’T: Do not burn wood with a moisture content of 25 per cent and over. “Wet, unseasoned wood can have high content of moisture, which creates smoke and soot build-up,” says Mark. Never burn treated pine, plywood, MDF, pre-primed or painted timber, driftwood or particleboard. Don’t burn coal in a wood burner as it may damage your heater.

Building a fire An upside-down fire-lighting technique can save time and reduce air pollution, says Mark. “If you want a fire that gets going quickly, saving on time and excess smoke, then we’d recommend trying this technique, which uses larger pieces of wood at the bottom, then smaller pieces, and kindling on top. You can walk away with confidence that your fire will be getting off to a good start and heating up fast.” u

Timber laminates If you’re looking for an option that’s easier on the hip pocket, timber laminate may be for you. Laminate flooring is less expensive than hardwood, is extremely hardwearing and is fade resistant. “The laminate core is manufactured with a high density fibreboard (HDF),” explains Buks Snyman, general manager of QEP NZ. The strength of laminate lies in its value 1

for money and the fact that its digitally printed top layer can provide a surprisingly realistic look. Another plus is its ease of maintenance. To keep floors looking good, regularly vacuum and gently wipe with a damp mop, and place doormats and rugs at entrances to absorb dirt before it’s tracked through the house. However, be aware that it is not suitable for outdoor areas, bathrooms or laundries. 3

here’s a lot to think about when looking at flooring. Aesthetically speaking, timber and stoneeffect finishes are on-trend, with vinyl and timber laminate winners for cost effectiveness. But you also need to consider function and use. Are you shopping for a high-traffic area, or a room for relaxing? Read on to find the right product to suit your lifestyle and budget.

35

Plan it Specialty flooring

Vinyl Vinyl flooring has come a long way from the cheap lino of the past. Manufacturers now use state-of-the-art photographic technology to replicate the exact look of natural materials like wood and stone. Soft underfoot with excellent give, vinyl is also waterproof, so it can be installed in any room of the home. It’s also a relatively easy DIY project that – depending on the size and complexity of your space – could be completed in a weekend without the need for expensive tools. Plan and prepare Before you go shopping, consider the size, purpose and temperature of your room. “First, check your subfloor; the flatter the floor, the better result you’ll get,” says Bunnings home furnishings buyer, Guy Davies. “If there are imperfections, factor a contingency into your calculations. Wear and tear is also important – heavy traffic requires a thicker wear layer. And if the room sees a wide variance in temperature, you’ll want to select a more stable product, like hybrid plank or tiles.”

Check the wear factor when selecting vinyl to ensure its suitability for your chosen space

Plank or tile? If you love the look of a hardwood floor but don’t want the expense (or upkeep) of timber, vinyl planks make a wonderful alternative. Look for long, wide planks with realistic knot and grain details and a smooth emboss. You can also use vinyl to replicate the look of ceramic tiles, at roughly half the cost. Hybrid tiles are a great DIY solution without the need for a professional tiler, while peel-andstick versions are ideal for budget renovations.

For the look of wood without the maintenance, try a lookalike 1 Senso ‘Prime’ 305mm x 305mm x 1.3mm vinyl floor tile in Wood Clear, $14.32/1sqm per carton, SKU: 00308180. 2 HanWood 2.64sqm 6mm rigid vinyl plank with 2mm EVA foam in Nordic Oak, $86.86, SKU: 00028172. 3 HanWood 7.5mm WPC waterproof flooring in Classic Oak, $171/carton, SKU: 00014474.

Let’s talk types Once you’ve considered your space and how it’s going to be used, it’s time to make your choice.  Sheet vinyl comes in rolls typically two or three metres wide, floats above the subfloor and is easy to install. You will need a perfectly flat subfloor, as imperfections can be felt underfoot.  Peel-and-stick products are tiles and planks with self-adhesive backing, making installation relatively seamless. You will also need a flat subfloor. Avoid using this type of tile in direct sunlight, as it can expand and contract.  Dryback are vinyl planks that are glued to the floor, making them super durable. Although fitting dryback versions has a slightly more involved installation process, the planks have better resistance to sunlight, and you can also use thicker types on uneven subfloors.  Hybrid planks and tiles combine the durability of laminate with the soft quality of vinyl. They are manufactured with } bunningsnz

36

Plan it Low-maintenance vinyl planks can create a sense of space in compact areas

a waterproof limestone or plastic composite core, which allows it to be used seamlessly throughout the house from living zones and bedrooms to wet areas. “The limestone core means the product is also more dimensionally stable, and pre-adhered backing saves on time, cost and allows it to be laid straight after tiles, provided there’s no more than a 3mm variation,” says QEP NZ’s Buks Snyman. ¿

Colours and sizes

When deciding whether to go dark, light or something in-between, consider your room size. If the space is quite compact, lighter toned shades will dramatically open up the room, whereas warm or darker hues can make a larger room feel cosier. Wall colour and natural light will also influence how flooring will look in situ. In lots of natural light, a dark product can help absorb brightness and glare, whereas a darker room may benefit from the reflective qualities of a gloss or whitewashed look. Board width can also influence how large a floor appears. While narrow boards give a more classic look and can visually elongate a room, the advantage of wider boards – or sheet vinyl flooring – is that there are fewer, or even no seams at all, which can create the illusion of a bigger floor area.

Light meal As a food prep zone and a key social hub, your kitchen needs lighting that fulfils myriad functions. Sharon Breeze, account manager for Brilliant Lighting, says it’s important to balance task lighting, which ensures safety and good visibility, with ambient lighting, which provides more localised, often warmer, light. “Ceiling lights can be great for refits and updates, with LED low-profile and decorative options providing strong light output for task lighting,” she explains. To avoid shadowing from downlights, install them directly above or in front of food prep areas, and use bulbs with a light output of more than 850 lumens and a broad light beam. For localised task lighting, use LED strip lighting under cupboards to illuminate benchtops and highlight the splashback. Ambient lighting adds flair. “Pendants are ideal for creating a more intimate zone,” says Sharon.

3

Relaxed living zones Geared around relaxing and socialising, the living room is better suited to a softer, diffused background light. Options include recessed ceiling lights, flush or close to ceiling fixtures, wall sconces and decorative accent lamps. If you have a favourite chair where you read, consider a floor lamp 4

SAFETY TIP

Restrictions apply to the installation of lights in wet areas like bathrooms. Consult a licensed electrician who can advise you on the best location and suitability of fixtures

alongside it, or a bright table lamp. Dimmer switches are also a great way to vary the light level for different tasks. Another factor to consider is your colour scheme. White walls and light, neutral furnishings will help bounce light around the room, making it brighter. However, darker flooring and walls absorb light, so you may need more fittings or a brighter bulb. Bedroom beauty The bedroom is a sanctuary, so think soft lighting linked to separate dimmable switches, which allows you to illuminate specific areas as desired. A series of recessed downlights will cover your general needs, while a central chandelier or pendant will create beautiful shadows and light play. For bedside lighting, consider table lamps, which can be easily updated when you change your decor.

Smart lighting

Lights have become incredibly clever and easy to control. For the ultimate in convenience, Sengled ‘Element’ hub and compatible bulbs enable you to illuminate your home via voice control, or remotely on a smart device. The wireless hub can be placed anywhere your home has wi-fi and can be connected to up to 50 bulbs, allowing you to schedule, operate and dim lights from any location. Another innovation is the Sengled ‘B22’ Colour Change Mood Smart LED light, which gives you the option of setting the appropriate mood lighting with two options: warm light or natural light. Simply click once for warm and twice for natural. Two moods, one light.

Also popular are pendants or wall lights, which free up the bedside table. Bathroom brilliance In this grooming and unwinding space, lighting needs to do double duty. The scale of the room will dictate the number of fittings required for even light distribution and to give flexibility, says Sharon. A layered scheme might include any of these: an LED oyster ceiling light, downlights, wall lamps, a central decorative fixture and an LED heat lamp, which lights, provides warmth and often includes a ventilating fan. One of the most important areas to illuminate is above 

No space is wasted – here, a narrow cabinet makes use of the gap between appliances

fter cooking in the same space for more than two decades, Kathy and Stephen were ready for a new kitchen. “I was confident I knew which cabinets I wanted where,” says Kathy, who used the expertise of a consultant to help bring her vision to life. Dark and moody black cabinetry is an on-trend choice that is beautifully balanced by the benchtop and wall cabinets, which are in a contrasting white finish. “We wanted to brighten up the space to make it look and feel bigger,” explains Kathy, who pored over Kaboodle’s website to come up with the contemporary reverse colour scheme.

When planning storage for a new kitchen, count everything you wish to accommodate, from crockery and cookware to small appliances, to work out the space you’ll need, then add about 20 per cent for contingencies

The stove-side pull-out is handy for those crucial cooking moments

Ebony and ivory Black aluminium window frames are a stylish option that echo the kitchen’s overall monochrome palette. With Kaboodle cabinets in Black Olive and Nougat Truffle, the result is light, calm and airy.

Beauty on the inside Home owner Kathy put a lot of thought into making clever use of cupboard space. “Internal pull-out baskets make those hard-to-reach items easily accessible, yet neatly tucked away,” adds Lisa. There’s even a handy little pullout next to the stove, which holds olive oil and seasonings.

Dishes duty Positioning the sink beneath the bifold window gives the washer-up a pretty view. The black granite composite sink makes a striking contrast to the pale benchtop, while the wall-mounted spout sits subtly over the sink and doesn’t fight for attention, as a towering kitchen mixer might have. ◆

A showstopping tub is pure at-home luxury, turning an ordinary bathroom into the ultimate retreat

45

Update it Choosing a bath

I

f you’re a bath person, a deep soaker is going to be high on your must-have bathroom wish list. Turning the dream into reality begins with two big decisions: which bath to choose and where to position it. Finding a tub you love is a good start, but space, budget and the realities of life with little kids or stiff joints will also play their part. Bath life choices A freestanding tub wins hands-down for centrepiece potential, but it’s not the only type of bath worth having. If you have small children, the under-three set benefit from a low inset bath with a flat bottom – easier for staying upright – and wide ledges for toys (and perched parents). Alternately, try a square freestanding model, paired with a stool. For adults, taking a warm bath is a self-care power move. But as you get older, or if you’ve hit the gym too hard, manoeuvring an aching body into a deep bath can pose issues. A low inset bath is a game changer here, or try a modern-day slipper version, where the thick edge and shallow foot improve access and the deep back supports shoulders so you’re only semi-reclined.

Try before you buy Bath shopping is best approached by going to the bathroom display section – and jumping in and road-testing the options. You may find that a smaller bath with steep sides, so you can sit up straight, feels more comfortable than the long, curved tub you had your heart set on. Cost is also a factor. A freestanding bath is often a bigger upfront investment than an inset model, but it’s important to look at the full picture; a built-in bath will need framing and tiling, which will add to the cost of installation. Michelle Oakes, marketing manager at Caroma (caroma.co.nz), says that while a freestanding bath can add value to your home, it’s worth assessing your options and even talking to a plumber before going to the store. “It’s important to be familiar with the existing plumbing set-out and the current bathwater waste position. Any changes to this configuration could affect your budget considerably,” she says. Aesthetics matter and new generation baths offer infinite possibilities, while unexpected colourways will make a strong statement. If setting a more restful, spa-like scene, play with the subtle points  A shower-over-bath set-up is perfect for spaces that won’t fit a freestanding tub

A freestanding bath can make an elegant statement piece, while inset baths offer more space for products

Choosing taps

Caroma ‘Aura’ 1600mm freestanding bath, $1,579, SKU: 04821598

The right tapware makes a bath pop. Inset baths have a choice of wall, hob or floor-mounted tapware. Freestanding baths are sometimes within reach of a wall-mounted spout – the longest reach 300mm from the wall – but a luxurious floor-mounted spout is a more flexible and striking choice. Options for style and finish are endless, but consistency is key to a cohesive look; choose items from the same range or with a similar shape.

46

Update it of difference offered by a gloss white finish or the silky surface of solid surface acrylic materials. Another factor to keep in mind when choosing your dream bath is its weight. Baths from materials such as natural or engineered stone are significantly heavier than those made from acrylic, and once you factor in the weight of the water and occupant, it can add up to a sizeable amount. Consult the professionals to make sure your floor can cope.

Practical magic Freestanding baths often lack the wider brim of built-in bath designs, but you’ll still need somewhere to stash your shampoo bottles. A stylish bath caddy or a stool set close by will provide elegant storage that’s in-line with the ‘me-time’ vision. For an inset bath, a wall niche stocked with luxurious amenities is another design idea straight out of the five-star hotel playbook, as is setting your bath on a plinth to give it real statement status. ◆

Floor planning If bath time in your household is an all-in affair, or you’re tall and like to stretch out, an 1800mm bath can be worth the extra inches of bathroom real estate. The smallest readily available baths measure 1500mm, which can still feel indulgent if they’re deep. Freestanding options are finished from every angle so they can be placed anywhere in a bathroom, plumbing permitting. Just don’t push them against the wall where they could trap mould and grime and make cleaning around them difficult. There should be at least 100mm clearance on each side of the bath – ideally, 300mm to 500mm on each side to ‘frame’ it without it drowning in the space. Inset baths free up floor space, but remember the tiled surround (the hob). A 700mm x 1500mm bath needs a 100mm hob around it, requiring a 900mm x 1700mm footprint. Back-to-wall baths resemble freestanding baths on three sides and sit flat against the wall at the rear, saving space; try Caroma’s 1600mm ‘Cube’. Ideally, the bath will be positioned opposite the door, where it gets most exposure. When positioned under a window (with frosted glass or louvres), or a skylight, baths take on a sanctuary feel.

spaces without the cost of replacing them,” says Ryan Willett, brand marketing manager for White Knight. As well as the speed of application that can refresh a room over a weekend, Ryan says it’s a budget-friendly way to update colours or restore marked tiles. White Knight tile paint has a glossy finish and can be used on ceramic wall tiles, even in the shower recess. It can also be used on melamine or laminate if shine is required. Tile paint also keeps the Pandora’s box of unforeseen renovation expenses firmly closed. “If you take the tiles off the wall you are breaking the water seal, which can then mean ripping apart your whole bathroom,” says Ryan.

The right quantity A garage full of old paint cans is a somewhat unsightly memorial to DIY projects past. Clearly the best way to avoid this is to accurately estimate how much you’ll need, which isn’t always as easy as it sounds. The paint calculator on the Bunnings website can take the guesswork out of determining how much paint you need for the job. If you do have paint left, think of ways you can use it for future projects – for touch-ups, upcycling old furniture or decorating pots, for example.

Ordinary pots gain the warmth of copper and an instant aged green patina by applying Dulux Copper Patina Effect Solution over Dulux Copper Effect

Reinvent cabinetry Worn-out cabinets can be brought in line with a new colour scheme in a few hours. With some sanding, sugar soap, priming and a few coats of laminate paint, you can extend the life of your kitchen or laundry by another 10 years, explains Ryan. White Knight laminate paint has a lovely satin finish, plus it can be tinted to any PPG paint colour, giving you masses of choice. Chalk it up Chalkboard paint is fun and practical, turning a blank kitchen nook into a home for shopping lists, messages and even entertainment for kids as you cook. In children’s rooms, chalkboard paints can refresh furniture, toy boxes and even entire walls. The Dulux Design Effects range offers classic schoolroom black or coloured chalkboard, which can be tinted to any shade. You could also take the concept up a notch with Dulux Duramax Magnetic Chalkboard spray.

Special effects Like CGI for your walls, next-generation concrete-look paints, like Dulux Concrete Effect, are so realistic they will instantly immerse you in an industrial setting. The look is cool, modern and utilitarian – ideal for fireplaces, hallways and accent walls. Warm and lustrous gold, copper and brass surfaces are also having an interiors moment, as Art Deco influences continue to make a comeback. As with any renovation project, it’s tempting to dive right in, but don’t skip the basics; filling in cracks and imperfections, and washing down surfaces is always key to achieving a flawless paint finish, especially when using metallic finish paints. Furniture upcycle Chalked and ultra-matt paints can provide a pretty patina in pastel shades, giving timber furniture that chic Paris flea-market look. “Chalk paints are popular because you usually only need to do a minimum of preparation before painting,” says Sarah. “Sometimes an item just needs a good clean with a scouring pad and warm soapy water. Rustic, French country and ornate Victorian-style pieces are all well suited to a purposely imperfect chalk paint effect.” Dial up the antique look by distressing the finish with medium-grit sandpaper, focusing on the edges. u bunningsnz

Fix it Installing insulation

Insulation is not only great for keeping you warm, it also reduces energy bills and noise

The hot stuff Stop the chill of winter – and summer’s heat – from creeping into your living spaces with insulation

Words Adam Woodhams. Photography Getty Images

E

ffective insulation is one of the best ways to improve passive energy efficiency in your home. Installed in the roof, above the ceiling, in walls or under the floor, it deters heat loss and heat gain and can save you heaps on your energy bills. Typically you’ll encounter a couple of different material types. Glasswool – made from spun, recycled glass – is used for most wall and ceiling insulation. Rockwool is made from molten, spun minerals or rocks and, due to its higher melting temperature, is often used in specialised products, such as fire-resistant batts. Which batts to choose? With glasswool batts, select products that are low-irritant, soft and comfortable to handle.

Ideally, you want products with no added – or low levels of – formaldehyde, and look for ones that deliver the best square metre coverage per pack. The most important detail to look out for is the product’s R-value, which measures how well the insulation can resist the transfer of heat from one space to another. Roughly speaking, the warmer the area in which you live, the lower the R-value you need. So if PRO TIP Although modern insulation products are low-irritant, it’s still wise to wear long sleeves and trousers, gloves, a dust mask and safety glasses

your region experiences warm summers and mild winters, go for an R-value of R-3.0 or R-4.0. In cooler regions you’d want at least R-5.0. Before you shop, you’ll need to measure the space – length by width – to estimate the square metreage. You’ll also need to measure the space between rafters or joists. Insulation comes in differing widths, so if you’re installing between framing, choose a width that ensures a snug fit. Can I DIY? If you can get up into the roof cavity quite easily, fitting insulation batts should be a fairly straightforward job. Wall insulation can be installed before the plasterboard goes on, but it requires professional attention if you have to retrofit. You’ll find easy-to-follow

Fitting tips Before entering the roof space or underfloor, turn off the power. “Wait for a cool day or start first thing in the morning and take breaks if it gets too warm,” advises Claire Cunliffe of Earthwool. Fluff out the batts to maximise the air trapped in the fibres. Start at the furthest point and work back towards your entry point. Cut the batts slightly larger than the gap so they fit snugly. Take particular care when cutting that you are clear of power cables and be aware of these while working. Trim batts so there is the recommended space around light fittings that protrude into the roof, or use collars to keep them separate from the insulation, to avoid fires. instructions and installation tips on the batts packaging and on the Bunnings website. Although modern insulation products are very low irritant, it still pays to wear the right gear. Not up for doing it yourself? Fix it What to put in your toolkit Equip yourself with these basics then get cracking on a DIY project!

T

hough simple, tackling some entry-level DIY tasks – such as hanging pictures, putting up shelves, fixing wobbly table legs or replacing door handles – is incredibly satisfying and rewarding. And it makes all the difference to have the right tools at hand, including these, our essential picks for a beginner’s toolkit.

Drawing the DIY line One of the most important DIY skills is knowing when you should step aside for the professionals.  Anything to do with electrical or plumbing works is extremely dangerous. It’s also illegal to DIY – you need a licensed tradie.  Anything structural – walls, posts and columns, footings and foundations – will need input from a qualified expert. You may be able to do the work but will likely need professional assessment, possibly plans drawn and potentially even council approval.  If in doubt, don’t. Be very honest when you evaluate your projects. If you think a task is too big to be accomplished singlehanded or too complex for your skills, don’t hesitate to call in the professionals.

Claw hammer Every toolkit needs a hammer, to use on everything from the obvious – hammering in nails – to light demolition work, shaping of materials and more. Look for a non-slip, anti-vibration shaft or grip that sits well in your hand and a well curved claw with a deep, fine V, so even small nails can be extracted.

Retractable tape measure This is your go-to tool for measuring anything from timber before cutting to working out if that new couch will fit. When extended, the metal measure is semi rigid; a ‘stop’ button holds it in place. The most popular and practical length is eight metres, but you can get smaller (two or five metres) or up to 30 metres.

Combination square Its rigid and moveable steel blade is at a right angle to the handle, which has a level-bubble and wide faces for positioning against a surface when marking or measuring. It also has a 45˚ shoulder for angle marking. Uses include marking timber for straight or angle cuts, and scribing a line on a long surface.

Spirit level You need this must-have tool for accurately checking a line or object is level (horizontal) or plumb (vertical). A spirit level is generally an aluminium box or bar structure, which holds fixed vials of liquid marked with lines and containing a large bubble. Hold it against a surface and when the bubble is between the lines, it’s level (or plumb).

EXPERT TIP “To choose the right toolbox, consider how many tools you carry and measure the length of your longest hand tools. Use this as a guide to select the right size”

Screwdriver set You’ll always need conventional screwdrivers for their accuracy and control. An extended set will reduce the possibility of damage to screw heads from using the wrong screwdriver tip size. Aim to have at least two Phillips head and two flat-head screwdrivers; ideally, short and long shafted drivers and colour-coded for different head types.

Spanner set or an adjustable wrench Nuts and bolts are a DIY inevitability. But the wrong spanner can slip and may damage and round off the nut or bolt head. An adjustable medium size wrench (200mm) is ideal if you only want one tool. A spanner set gives you accurate sizing within the range; slipping will be less likely.

Timber handsaw There is a handsaw for almost any cutting function. Bunnings hand tools buyer Mike Jaggs says, “One thing to think about is how fine the cut will be. The TPI, or ‘teeth per inch’ measure will determine this. For general purpose woodwork, a TPI of 7/8 will be sufficient. For more detailed work, a TPI of 9/10 or higher is recommended.”

Circular saw A circular saw makes larger projects easier and does things like ripping – that is, cutting a piece of timber from end-to-end – with ease. Battery models are useful for many DIY tasks – just select a model that’s within your existing battery system – or you may prefer a traditional corded model.

Hex keys Available in various sizes in sets, in metric and/or imperial measurements, hex keys are an essential piece of kit for almost all flat-pack construction projects. “A set with 7-10 sizes is a handy item for your toolbox as you never know what size you will need until it happens,” explains Mike.

Electronic stud finder Drilling a hole in a wall is a common but potentially risky DIY task. Pipes and wiring lurk behind walls; hitting them can be disastrous. Missing the timber stud also means holes to patch. A stud finder can tell you where the centre of a stud is for accurate drilling and screwing. Some also warn of live wires in the vicinity.

Hammer drill With a rotating and forward hammering action, this drill is useful for putting plugs into hard surfaces like masonry. Think about future tools you’re likely to want when buying into an 18V platform. Select a model with a battery that can interchange with other power tools as your kit grows. ◆

Let in plenty of fresh air Any closed room becomes stuffy. If that same room then has a gas heater or new paint, carpets or furniture, it is also likely to be filled with a range of undesirable gases. Air out rooms during the day, and then leave doors or windows open a crack when possible, and when they are being used. Have extractor fans fitted These are a must in the kitchen, laundry and bathroom. They will help to remove gases, create airflow and help keep moisture down, avoiding mould. Be VOC smart When you’re selecting any products, from paint to carpet, cushions to cupboards, read the label for information on levels of VOCs (see box, right) and formaldehyde. If there’s no information on the product, check the company webpage. Suck it up Shopping for a new vacuum cleaner? Look for models with a HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filter, which traps all sorts of nuisance dusts and materials. Asthma and Respiratory Foundation NZ chief executive Letitia O’Dwyer says HEPA filters are among the best you can get. “Machines without HEPA filters are more likely to recirculate fine dust back into the air through their exhaust vent,” she explains. “However, while filters catch most of this, some air can bypass them, and vacuuming itself can raise particles into the air that won’t get sucked into the vacuum.” She advises that people sensitive to particulate allergens don’t do the vacuuming, and don’t enter the area for at least 20 minutes afterwards. Keep on top of cleaning Regularly use microfibre or damp cloths to collect dust from surfaces, especially from forgotten spots such as windowsills and skirting. And say goodbye to that old feather duster, too. “Feather dusters are perfect for hard to reach nuisances like cobwebs, but also stir dust up into the air, leaving it to resettle a few minutes later,” says Letitia. “An electrostatic duster or dry cloth can have the same effect, and will be better for your air quality.” For hard floors such as timber or tiles, she recommends using a damp, electrostatic or steam mop to prevent stirring up dust. Remember to clean or replace filters and screens

in vacuums, rangehoods and extractor fans, and switch to low-VOC cleaning and bathroom products. Dry out Use granulated moistureabsorbing products to reduce damp and humidity in areas with poor air circulation such as wardrobes. Check your linen Bedding and towels can harbour various allergens and dust mites. Make sure they are laundered at least weekly and use a hot wash. If skin allergies are an issue, switch to fragrance-free laundry products. 

What are VOCs?

VOCs, volatile organic compounds, are often talked about, but little understood by most of us, so we asked Dulux interior paint expert Josh Plautz to explain. “VOCs are relatively small molecules that can be present in many consumer products, including paints and coatings. When you walk into a freshly painted or renovated house, often the odours you’re picking up are the result of VOCs coming from materials. Over time they’ll diffuse and be vented to the outdoors,” he says. So what are low-VOC paints? “A low-VOC coating is carefully formulated to avoid the use of VOCs, meaning they won’t be present in the first place. The change has mainly been made possible by the switch to water-based paints. This means you can get back to using rooms faster and your family has lower exposure to these chemicals – great news if you want to avoid unwanted chemicals or have any sensitivity to odours.”.

Border patrol Give your bathroom a sparkling new look and banish scummy seals in minutes with Loctite’s innovative Re-New sealant The problem Silicone sealant (or caulk) is an essential finishing product for kitchens and bathrooms, sealing and waterproofing the border between tiles, benchtops, sinks and baths – but it’s also prone to unhygienic mould and stains. Replacing silicone joints needs careful prep work and finishing touches, such as masking around the joint, removing old sealants, cleaning the area, inserting the

silicone with a cartridge gun, smoothing it down, allowing to dry, and so on. For many, it’s just too much trouble to DIY, or costly to hire skilled labour.

The solution With Loctite Re-New, even the most reluctant home improver can banish grotty vertical and horizontal joins. And the job can be done in just one step by simply applying Re-New directly

over the top of old sealant with the practical tube, without the need for any specialist expertise, tools or instructions. With the easy-to-use applicator and integrated smoothing tool, getting a professional-looking result is simple – giving your bathroom a clean new look is as effortless as wielding a pen! Re-New offers optimum adhesion on silicone, exceptional water resistance and excellent flexibility – a three-phase protection that stops stains and mould spreading. Using Re-New over the old caulk, without having to cut out the old product, is revolutionary. The odourless, solvent-free silicone formula contains anti-mould properties, so discolouration won’t show through and any residual mould won’t reappear.

How does it work? First, clean the old sealant with a damp cloth and mould-removing cleaner. Holding the tube at a 45-degree angle, gently squeeze to apply, running the applicator over the existing caulk. Repeat

the process without squeezing the tube for a smooth finish. If you make a mistake, simply wipe off with a damp cloth and reapply. One tube can cover 5 to 7 metres of joints. Applying Re-New is quick too – you can expose it to water six hours after application, so it can be done in a day! u

Make the hooks. Set a mitre saw at 15° to trim the end of the dowel at an angle.

To make the backing board, on the 90mm pine, mark 30mm along one side as the base, then measure and mark six evenly spaced points beginning 50mm from the ends.

Measure and mark the dowel 50mm from the longest point and cut at 15°, repeating to make six hooks.

Use the 2.5mm bit to drill 10mm-deep pilot holes at the marked points, angling the drill downwards to make the holes at an approximate 15° angle.

On the end-grain of each hook, measure and mark the centre then use the drill with a 2.5mm bit to drill 10mm-deep pilot holes.

Use the drill with a driver bit to drive 40mm screws through the pilot holes in the backing board to protrude by about 2mm, then line up the holes in the hooks and finish securing the screws.

PRO TIP

7

To attach the top shelf, mark 10mm along one side of the 65mm pine. From one end, measure 150mm, 300mm, 300mm and 300mm to drill pilot holes using a 2.5mm bit.

8

Position the top shelf against the backing board, checking edges are flush, and use the drill with a driver bit to secure through the pilot holes with 40mm screws. Lightly sand all over using 180-grit abrasive paper and block. ¿

To mount the rack, locate wall studs and use a spirit level to mark out and install plasterboard screws. Hold rack against the screws to transfer the positions on the back, and install keyhole hooks

nassuming at first glance, timber battens can be the basis for room-changing projects. Milled to accurate, standard measurements, they are easy to work with and don’t require much finishing. This project uses simple timber lengths to great effect, combined with dowel for a handy rack for the hallway. Tip: While you could make the cuts using a mitre box with a hand saw, a mitre saw will result in much faster, more accurate assembly.

KEEP NZ STINK BUG FREE THIS WINTER

The Brown Marmorated Stink Bug is a pest that can infest your home in the thousands, stinks when crushed, and is almost impossible to get rid of. It is also a major threat to our fruit and vegetable industries. It’s not in New Zealand yet, and we want to keep it that way. It hibernates inside homes in the winter, so if you see one, don’t kill it. Catch it, take a photo, and call us on 0800 80 99 66. Look for black & white banding on the sides of the abdomen

Wonder wall Bring a bit of easy warmth and organic appeal to a room with this simple DIY dowel feature wall

65

Make it Dowel feature wall

A

plain and uninspiring wall can be transformed into a striking feature with this simple project. Use lengths of semi-circular dowel to create a half wall that combines the warmth of natural timber with tactile texture. Recreate the look shown here by using dowel made from radiata pine, a softwood that has a light tone, to add interest and cosiness to a room. TOOLS & MATERIALS

Safety equipment  Mitre saw  Air compressor and hose  C1 series air brad nailer  Clean cloth  Flexible steel filling blade  Sanding block with 180-grit  abrasive paper Caulking gun  Mini microfibre roller with tray  2400mm x 1200mm x 12mm structural  plywood, cut to 1800m long 30 lengths of 2.4m x 30mm x 7mm pine  half-round dowel Woodworking adhesive  15mm C1 series brad nails  2.4m length of 40mm x 10mm  untreated dressing grade pine 250g wood filler  Water-based clear wood varnish  Construction adhesive 

1

Have the plywood cut to size (we cut ours to 1800mm wide x 1200mm high). Set up a mitre saw with a stopper to cut lengths of dowel in half, cutting three lengths at a time. Note the dowel is slightly longer than 2.4m, which allows for the width of the saw blade.

2 Project, instructions and steps photography Natasha Dickins. Photography Cath Muscat, stylist Tilly Roberts

Position a long side of the plywood against a wall to use it as a straightedge. Apply woodworking adhesive along the back of the first piece of dowel, then position it flush with the edge of the plywood. Use the nail gun

to pin it in four places, about 75mm from the ends and 350mm apart. To ensure the nails are almost invisible, avoid nailing through the middle of the dowel. Instead, position the gun to the side of the dowel, about a third of the way up, to shoot into the plywood on alternating sides of the dowel.

1

2

3

Add woodworking adhesive to the next piece of dowel and position it against the first, making sure the long side of the plywood is straight against the wall and the ends of the dowel are even. Secure using the nail gun and repeat to finish the wall, wiping away excess adhesive with a clean, damp cloth as you go.

4

3

To frame along the top, cut the moulding to the same length, apply woodworking adhesive, then use the nail gun to attach it along the top, securing nails about 300mm apart and angling them to go through the end-grain of the dowel pieces. Wipe away excess adhesive with a damp cloth.

5

Smooth over all the nails with timber filler using a flexible steel blade, leaving to dry. Smooth with 180-grit abrasive paper, holding the sanding block at an angle between the dowel, then clean away dust with a damp cloth. Seal with two coats of varnish using a mini roller, wiping away excess with a clean cloth.

4

6

Ensure the wall is clean and free of dust. On the back of the plywood, use a caulking gun to apply construction adhesive in a zigzag pattern for maximum coverage. Position it against the wall then pull it away, leave to dry for maximum five minutes, then reposition against the wall and apply pressure as it cures. ◆

Heaven scent Name: Daphne spp. What they look like This elegant shrub brings beauty and scent to the winter garden. The star-shaped flowers range in colour from white to pink or lilac-pink, depending on species. Some daphnes are deciduous and hardy, while others are evergreen and tender. Their height ranges from 30 centimetres to three metres. Where they grow Daphnes have the desirable trait of growing in shade; partial shade is best. A little morning sun with filtered afternoon light is ideal. Daphnes grow best in the ground, but some of the newer cultivars of Daphne odora also do well in pots. Why we love them With their sweet, fruity scent, this exotic shrub will bring wafts of perfume to your garden and just one flowering stem brought indoors will scent your entire house. Daphne odora and Daphne bholua flower in winter, while other species bloom from early, mid or late spring.

Daphne Daphne odora x bholua ‘Perfume Princess’

Words Jane Wrigglesworth

How to grow them Daphnes prefer a slightly acid, well-drained soil. If your soil is heavy, plant in raised beds. Dig in compost or peat at planting time. Daphne roots are delicate and dislike disturbance; once planted, they should not be moved. Feed occasionally with a fertiliser. While Daphne bholua tolerates some heavier pruning, most others won’t, so give just a light trim after flowering. ◆
