BRIEF SCI-Arc, M.Arch II Application Portfolio

The Project proposes a prototype for a sustainable urban environment by using mixed-use and residential areas together. Overall designed site is composed of different units and a strong green urban character. The design also proposes a living environment that provides open spaces and gathering areas. Strong public gathering areas are connected to each other with different characteristics such as green paths, mixed-use areas and by the river. This idea improves the quality of both mixed-use and natural paths. Mixed-use areas are planned to facilitate by this pedestrian traffic and it increases the economic level of surrounding shops, cafes and restaurants.

BRIEF

Nevşehir is a significant city for the project as it creates a strong link between prehistoric time and the present day. The city has many patterns and formulas of architectural elements, still most are not discovered yet. The building and the site reflect patterns and features of the site, its history and everything creating the nature of it. As an example, organic forms are used as an inspiration source in preliminary design phases in terms of structure, macro form-finding and patterns. In Cappadocia, the site is very rich and has many values to conserve and inspire from. There are many historical, sociocultural and aesthetical values and layers in the site and these values were embodied and reflected for the proposed design.

phılosophy

Conserving the site and more importantly showing its value to the people and promote it by using well organized functional spaces, innovative and technological architectural methods, aesthetically pleasing, creative solutions were the main objectives in the philosophy of the design. Each unit, material, component and element were planned to refer to this idea at the end. Not a formalist approach but a uniform, well-though, conscious design with many strategies to improve and revitalize this area may provide a project that will be unique in all aspects and be a part of this community and serve for it.

Sustainability Systems

All the functions are served by a series of environmental systems such as kinetic facade shader and roof systems, HVAC system, wind catcher system, electrical and lighting systems in order to make the building efficient in terms of both functional and environmental. The building incorporates an organic facade that works with all the environmental and building systems explained, still expressing the interior functions from outside.

Kinetic Roof

Interior illumination is controlled by kinetic Glassfibre Reinforced Polymer(GFRP) which make them able to deform without breaking. The responsive facade is behaving as a living skin that could breathe and communicate with its environment. Moving mechanism works according to the Seasonal and Daily data parameters in order to make the building highly energy-efficient.

The master plan proposes a unique solution to combine the history of Ankara’s universities to today’s cultural richness of Ankara in the Bilkent Lake, by proposing a self-sufficient site that invites people of the city, primarily the profiles of Hacettepe University, Bilkent University and METU with various facilities that are enhanced by sustainable solutions in cultural, economic and environmental aspects. The aim is to highlight the natural and tranquil characteristic of the site, which is located in the middle of a urban settlement, connects three universities together offering an escapade on a research and experience basis from the routines of an ordinary campus life. Self-sufficiency is a key term on the project to create a supply-demand equilibrium for society. Topography plays an important role on the site, with the variable heights and water feature.

CONCEPT

Building Program is divided into three which are Institute of Technology, Social Interface and Management. The Institute adopts open-classroom concept. One of the key concepts of the design is “Motion”. Motion was intended to be perceived through every aspect of the building. The form, functions, circulation and the structure are designed to realize motion. Curved façade is dynamic to represent non-stop motion in technological advancements. The building provides spaces for educational activities that promote technological advancements, and is an experimental institute in which people of all ages and status can experience the action in the building and research.

The Project started at an urban planning level as a team work. As ARCH302 class, a site study conducted to the project area and an interaction with people living near the area was formed. The site divided into 4 different regions. The area which is 72.000 m² includes an archaelogical site, a school, 27 housing units and governmental units. When group work was done, given mass was supposed to be kept for individual design which is planned to respect urban fabric. My design idea was to have a crack in the building that represents the dynamism of the city in terms of cultural differences and dynamism of the two bridges which are connected to the building.

BRIEF

The project is designed for a competition organized by Istituto Marangoni, Milano and architect/designer Giulio Cappellini. The competition mainly focuses on new approaches on chair design and comfort it provides. The design has an organic/parametric form that designed according to the human postures. It provides 2 areas for relaxing. First part is with the lamp. Design is for lie on and resting with a light source for reading book, magazine or anything for purpose. The other part consists of a sitting area that provides a desk. This part provides all kind of sitting positions and human act for relaxing.

Blue is a color makes people feel comfortable according to researches. It represents both confidence and trust. It is also one of the natural colors of sky and sea. It resemblances water as well. For the structural part, color white is used. White resemblances purity. For the desk, wooden material is used with the color dark brown. Plastics used in the project and it can be bend when someone sits or lie on the chair for making the structure more comfortable. Also, lamp and desk are connected with multifunctional bar that creates a feasibility for different uses. Lamp and desk may orient according to the users.

Çamlıca TV and Radio Tower is 369 meter-tall designed as a new telecommunications tower that will replace several outdated structures currently in use. Designed by Melike Altınışık Architects, the project is currently underconstruction, the project is set to become the tallest tower in Istanbul. The TV and Radio Tower seeks a sense of motion and rhythm within its silhouette that changes when viewed from different directions around Istanbul. Those architectural formations combine elegance and beauty with math and geometry, whose innovative concept allows inhabitable spaces to be attached to the whole of the tower’s core. The project hopes to symbolize the growth of the megacity of Istanbul. As an intern, I involved the project in the phases of 3D Printing and model making for an exhibition.

is the result of integrating construction traditions in nature with modern and digital fabrication technologies, inspired by the unique mediterranean geographical location. The project was designed and constructed for International Architectural Biennale Antalya(IABA) 2017 by Melike Altınışık Architects. I involved in the project by working on one of the digitally fabricated designs. I improved conceptual mass, wrote a definition in Grasshopper, made the design completely parametric and designed panels with a definition that uses a mathematical and aesthetically pleasing solution. Design and Architecture Society Extra-Curricular

dasbilkent.com Design and Architecture Society is one of the biggest design and architecture societies among universities in Turkey. The society has 6 coordinatorships which are Tasarım Bilkent, Paftamag, 1 Architect 1 Space, Organization, Travel and Design. The society has more than 300 members from architecture, interior architecture and graphic design students. The coordinatorships and their events are managed by a core team of which I contribute as a Co-Chairman of the society in 2017/2018. Our purpose is to introduce successful designers to the target group and raise awareness of design students in a social and creative environment. Design days of Bilkent(Tasarım Bilkent) is held every year at a selected date in the spring semester. I was an active member of Tasarım Bilkent 2016 organization team. Then I organized Tasarım Bilkent 2017 and 2018 which gave me a great chance to meet best designers and improve my organizational and teamwork skills. The event is one of the most comprenhensive architecture and design based events organized by the initiative of the undergraduate students. Design days of Bilkent consists of presentations, interviews, workshops and exhibitions of professionals in the fields of design, art and architecture. We welcomed designers from world-known architecture firms including SOM, Gehry Partners, Zaha Hadid Architects, SHoP Architects, Tabanlıoğlu Architects and so on.
