PLANTING FOR OUR CLIMATE When you are building a resilient, water wise garden, it’s important to keep in mind the rainfall in your area, the climate, your soil type and rate of water evaporation.

Melbourne Water reports show Melbournians have taken heed of the Save Water 155L daily suggested maximum usage with averages within the limit throughout Autumn and Winter. That’s great news but as you’d expect the report last Summer was significantly higher. The current storage levels are at about 28.4% with June to November being expected to help recovery.

The Federal Government recently announced its new legislation for the expanded Renewable Energy Target (RET) which will allow for the creation of new ‘Solar Credits’ immediately replacing the existing Solar Homes and Communities Plan (SHCP).

In response, a number of environmental bodies have indicated halting the $8,000 solar PV rebate has created uncertainty in the renewable energy market.

WA Sustainable Energy Association CEO, Dr.. Ray Wills, suggests while the current scheme warranted review, the proposal for solar credits offers little guarantee for ongoing support given it has yet to pass through Parliament.

‘The changes add a new element of uncertainty to the market at a time when industry growth could be helping Australia through the current economic turmoil,’ he said.

‘A simpler move in transition would have been to increase the size of the system eligible for the rebate to a 1.5 kilowatt system – this would have eased demand, increased the amount of solar being installed, increased price competition and increased the return to Government on its investment.’

Environment Victoria’s report, The Green Jobs State: Seizing The Opportunities, suggests 3% of Victorians currently use solar hot water.

By increasing that figure to 30% by 2020, 1500 new jobs would be created and Victoria’s greenhouse gas emissions would reduce by a

massive 1.8 million tonnes per year.

History has shown without government incentives, the solar energy industry rapidly declines as uptake is profoundly reduced. Manager of Dynamic Technology Solutions, Mr. Mark Bisby, believes rising energy prices as well as government incentives will help drive the nation towards ‘clean energy’ options.

“The rollback of the $8,000 means tested rebate may seem to be counter-productive to the uptake of renewable energy systems in Australia, but I feel the proposed R.E.T. Scheme will enable a broader range of households and businesses to look at photovoltaic generation as a viable infrastructure purchase. Those that could afford the initial installation costs were always outside the scope of the rebate scheme, now they can support the growth of clean energy in this country,“ he said.

“Now all we need is for the government to get serious about renewable energy, and fast track the RET scheme legislation through.

3. Spread a thin layer of raspberry jam into the middle of each square.

4. Top the raspberry jam with one peach slice.

5. Wrap the two opposite ends of pastry into the middle and brush with a little milk.

6. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until your pastries are slightly golden.

7. Place on a wire rack and when cooled, dust with a little icing sugar
