Victoria Demonstrates Lessons for New Living VICURBAN has demonstrated environmentally-smart building strategies by combining the expertise of Burbank and seven boutique architects to build the Habitat21 Centre for New Living. Habitat21 is a demonstration project that showcases five architecturallydesigned homes for 21st century living. Located in Dandenong South, the five demonstration homes offer a new way of living that uses land and infrastructure efficiently without compromising on quality. Burbank managing director Jarrod Sanfilippo said the project was a great opportunity to create strong industry partnerships and share knowledge with the greater community. “Burbank is the only volume builder in Victoria with an entire collection of 7-Star rated homes”, Mr Sanfilippo said, “and partnerships such as Habitat21 highlight our common vision of providing sustainable homes.” Planning Minister Justin Madden said, that at around 150sqm, the new homes were approximately 30 percent smaller than the average volume built home.
“VicUrban wanted a volume builder involved in the creation of these 7-Star homes as it demonstrates these homes are achievable and can be easily replicated in the mainstream. “By combining good design with accessible features and a 7-Star energy rating, these homes can be delivered on smaller lots, making them more affordable upfront as well as reducing their day-to-day running costs,” he said. The 7-Star energy efficiency rating in these homes is achieved through strategies including passive solar design, thermal mass, cross ventilation and products such as insulation and double glazing. “Home buyers will ultimately enjoy healthier living conditions thanks to the use of less toxic, eco friendly materials, such as low VOC paints and laminates, recycled aggregate concrete and plantation harvested timber,” Burbank senior estimator Roslyn Smail said.
Mr Madden added consumers were asking for an increasingly sophisticated combination of design features which use space wisely and efficiently, while also providing a modern, luxurious home. “These demonstration houses have combined the skills of VicUrban, seven leading architects and volume builder Burbank to produce a new way of living that uses land efficiently without compromising on quality,” Mr Madden said. Habitat21 Centre for new living is open for public display each weekend. More information can be found at www.habitat21.com.au.

The Enduring Qualities of Terricotta WUNDERLICH has been putting roofs over people’s heads for almost 100 years, with their range of richly-coloured and durable terracotta roof tiles. Originally importing terracotta tiles from France, Wunderlich brothers Ernest, Alfred and Otto began manufacturing their own terracotta roof tiles in Australia in 1916. Staying true to their vision that every home deserved the colourfastness of a terracotta-tiled roof, the Wunderlichs have been creating terracotta tiles that are practical, beautiful and durable. The secret to the everlasting colour comes from the firing process: each tile is glazed and then fired at 1096°C, baking the colour into the tile and enabling it to withstand time and nature’s elements. The tiles are then cooled, quality tested and packaged, ready for your home. Available in range of profiles and colours to suit period homes or the most contemporary design, Wunderlich terracotta tiles have something for everybody. Because terracotta tiles offer a 50 year guarantee on colour longevity, you can be sure the rich colour of your beautiful Wunderlich roof will still be in all its glory for your grandchildren to admire. Each tile, proudly stamped with Wunderlich is their commitment to the lasting beauty of terracotta. Wunderlich terracotta roof tiles are available through Burbank’s Edge Selection Studio. Denton Mills awards Burbank Receives Master Builders Top Gong
BURBANK has added yet another honour to its repertoire by taking out the ‘Best Integrated Housing Development Award’ for its Denton Mills project at the Master Builders Association of Victoria’s awards held at the Grand Hyatt, Melbourne. The former Denton Hat Mills factory, the heritage-listed Denton Mills development – spanning 95 metres along Nicholson Street, Abbotsford – is now a lively, mixed-use precinct that has transformed the once derelict site into a vibrant mix of residences, offices, and a café. “Burbank engaged Peddle Thorp architects to design a unique mixeduse development in harmony with original architect William Pitt’s design of circa 1890,” said Burbank Managing Director Jarrod Sanfilippo.
“Heritage features of the original steam powered hat factory, such as the façade and chimney, were restored.
“Burbank is highly committed to surpassing expectations, and we are thrilled to receive this award for Denton Mills,” Mr Sanfilippo said.
“The 61 residences at Denton Mills’ comprise a mix of one, two and three bedroom apartments, lofts, and twostorey terrace style apartments, all surrounding a central courtyard.
Burbank also congratulates Peddle Thorp, winner of Master Builders’ Association 2010 Architects Award for their work on this exciting project.
“Six offices are also incorporated into the development, as well as a ground floor café, which has become a focal point for residents and workers in the area. “An undercover carpark for 145 cars at the rear of the original building and 90 bicycle racks complete the development,” Mr Sanfilippo said. This award-winning $36 million development is yet another feather in Burbank’s cap, who, with more than two decades of experience under their belts and counting, continues to deliver innovative and quality products.

Burbank - 2010 Hobsons Bay Business Excellence Award WINNER BURBANK has proven it’s at the top of the business heap by taking out the 2010 Hobsons Bay Business Excellence Award for Best Retail Business. Burbank is one of 3500 businesses in the municipality of Hobsons Bay. The annual awards seek to recognise excellence and innovation in business practice and the partnership role business plays with the community. The award category was judged by an independent panel of eight members from the private and public sectors, each having extensive experience in relation to the category criteria: product, business planning and management, marketing, customer service, professional, cultural and social development, environmental sustainability and risk management. Burbank managing director and Altona resident Jarrod Sanfilippo said it was an honour to receive the award.
“In the past 25 years, Burbank has constructed homes and developed land for more than 20,000 Australians,” Mr Sanfilippo said. “We are delighted to be recognised by our home community and will continue to strive for excellence and foster partnerships within Hobsons Bay as Burbank continues to grow.” Winning the title of Business of the Year and Best Manufacturing and Industrial on the night was Brooklyn based stone masonry company, the Paz Group. “Paz Group is a great example of the success of such partnerships,” Mr Sanifilippo added. “The group has supplied stone bench tops for our detached homes for the past 3 years and the outcoming result has been mutually beneficial in the growth of our companies and most importantly the quality of the final product for our customers.”

Thank you David Williams, Chef at Alamanda Café & Providore for this tastebud-tantalising dish. Give it a try or sample this popular dish made by the expert himself when you next visit Alamanda Estate. Ingredients • 750g desiree potatoes • 150g plain flour • 1 egg (lightly beaten) • 20 prawns • 170g butter • 1 bunch coriander • 2 green chillies (cut and de-seeded)
• 100g grated parmesan (extra to serve) • 50ml olive oil • 20g pine nuts • ¼ flat-leaf parsley • juice of half lemon • 2 garlic cloves • 1 punnet micro coriander leaves
Method To make chilli coriander, combine coriander, chillies, grated parmesan, olive oil, pine nuts, parsley, juice of lemon and garlic cloves in a blender, until smooth paste. Season with salt. To make gnocchi, steam potatoes for 30-40 minutes or until cooked through. Peel when cool enough to handle. Put flour into large open bowl. Press the hot potato through a mouli into the flour. Add the egg and two and a half teaspoons of salt. Then quickly mix through with a pastry scraper and hand, until the dough comes together. Add more flour if too sticky. Dust the bench with flour, divide the dough mixture into four portions and roll into logs. Cut into 1.5cm lengths and set aside on tray and freeze until needed. To assemble dish, bring a large pan of slated water to boil over high heat. Cook gnocchi until they float to the surface. Drain well. Meanwhile, in a non-stick frying pan, cook prawns and add in pesto as desired. Add gnocchi to the prawns toss and serve in pasta bowl. Garnish with micro herb and extra parmesan. Serves 4.
