55 & Beyond: Joslyn and Tuttle February Newsletter

Page 1

FEBRUARY UPDATES The first month of 2022 came and went by so quick. We didn’t get off to a great start as we had to cancel all classes for most of the month but let’s not dwell on the past. Let’s turn the page and look forward to February. As most of our classes resume, we ask that you continue to self-monitor for any COVID-19 symptoms. If you are feeling sick, please stay home. We have a few virtual classes that you can participate in. The staff is more than happy to help you get connected with Zoom. As a reminder, make sure to wash your hands and wear a face mask inside the facility. Joslyn and Tuttle will continue to follow LA County Public Health guidelines so that you can recreate in a safe environment. We have a few events planned at Joslyn this month. The Burbank Rotary Club presents “Young at Heart with Rat Pack Ricky and Elvis” on Friday, February 11. Welbe Health is back to host a Scrapbook Journal Event on Tuesday, February 15. You can contact Joslyn to RSVP for either event. Tuttle will be having a Valentine’s Day Celebration on Thursday, February 10. You can check our Events page for more information. As you may or may not know, the month of February is designated as American Heart Month. We have some tips on how to improve your heart health inside this newsletter. We hope you have an amazing month of February!

TAI CHI WITH CHRIS & JOHN Tuesdays at Joslyn 10:00am-11:00am Tai chi is a system of exercise developed in ancient China. Technically, a martial art, tai chi’s low-impact style will benefit anyone’s health regardless of age or physical ability. Tai chi enhances one’s balance, agility, joint and muscle strength. Also, increased oxygen in the blood heals the body, restores the immune system, and decreases stress. It may reduce chronic symptoms too. Tai chi’s slow motion dance enhances memory and concentration. Instructors, Chris and John believe in ‘no pain, lots of gain.’ All are welcome to their Tuesday morning class. Wear comfortable clothing.

HEART-HEALTHY HABITS FOR SENIORS February is designated as American Heart Month to advocate about cardiovascular health and raise awareness about heart disease. Below are some ways you can help improve heart health.

GET ENOUGH EXERCISE

Physical activity is one of the best ways to improve heart health. The American Heart Association recommends that individuals perform at least 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise.

EAT A HEART-HEALTHY DIET Load up on fresh fruits and vegetables while limiting saturated fats, salt, and foods containing cholesterol, like fatty meats. A Mediterranean diet focuses on eating a diet rich in fresh fruit and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and fish and seafood instead of red and processed meats.

GET BETTER SLEEP

It is important to have a good night’s sleep. Most experts say that seniors should sleep between seven and nine hours each night. Sleep is beneficial for brain functionality, metabolism, immune functionality and emotional well-being.

REDUCE STRESS FACTORS

According to studies, stress can compound many heart disease risks that older adults already face, like high blood pressure. Take the time to find healthy outlets to relieve the stress and lower your risk of heart disease.
