FEBRUARY UPDATES

Just like that, we are already into February! I know this new year has started off a little differently then we could have imagined, but everyone here at the City hopes that everyone has been staying safe and healthy with eveything that’s been going on. Whether you’ve been impacted directly or indirectly from these fires, we hope to be a place where you can let all your worries go and just socialize and enjoy your time. There is no better time to get in touch with your loved ones during the month of love, so be sure to be there for family and friends.

This year also marks the start of the City’s 100 Centennial Celebration! Our lovely Parks and Recreation Department was established 100 years ago, and what better way to ring in a new year than with amazing events and merch celebrating our wonderful city! As the year unfolds, keep a lookout on our Burbank website for information on how we plan to celebrate our Centennial year.

Both Joslyn and Tuttle Senior Center are packing in a bunch of amazing events in February. From health presentations, to class series; there is something for everyone. If there is anyone out there missing daytrips - there may be a temporary fix for that travel want. The “On the Move” program holds trips every month right out of Joslyn. They take a group of people to places such as museums, art exhibits, outlet malls and so much more. Be sure to check out their ad on the “Joslyn and Tuttle” events pages to learn more about how to join in on their trips!

For the most up-to-date information on classes, events, and our monthly presentations, please visit Joslyn and Tuttle or check out our website: www.burbankca.gov/adults55

How to Celebrate Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is not just for the young lovebirds; it’s a celebration of love that transcends age. For seniors, Valentine’s Day offers a wonderful opportunity to express affection and create lasting memories. In this post, we will explore the 10 best Valentine’s Day activities for seniors. Whether they are spending the day with a longtime partner, close friends, or family, these activities are sure to bring joy and warmth to their hearts.

Best Valentine’s Day Activities for Seniors

• Memory Lane Scrapbooking

Gather photographs, letters, and mementos to create a scrapbook that captures the beautiful journey of a senior couple’s love. This activity not only fosters reminiscence but also provides a tangible keepsake that can be cherished for years to come. Consider organizing a scrapbooking workshop with a professional to guide seniors through creative techniques and design elements. Encourage them to share stories associated with each photo. Add a twist by incorporating digital elements, creating an interactive digital scrapbook

Valentine’s Day Tea Party

Host a delightful tea party with heart-shaped treats, decorations, and a variety of teas. This low-key and intimate gathering allows seniors to enjoy each other’s company in a cozy setting. Arrange for a live acoustic performance or hire a pianist to create a charming atmosphere, turning the tea party into a mini-concert. Consider involving a local tea expert to educate seniors about different tea varieties. Provide small gift bags with personalized tea blends as party favors. Organize a tea-tasting competition for a fun and engaging experience.

• Crafting Heartfelt Valentines

Engage seniors in a crafting session where they can create personalized Valentine’s Day cards. This could include using various art supplies, such as colored paper, ribbons, and embellishments, to make their cards unique. The process of making something with their hands adds a special touch to the gesture of giving. Invite a local artist to provide guidance and share creative techniques. Consider turning it into a card exchange, so each senior receives a handmade card from a fellow participant. Display the crafted cards in a communal area for everyone to admire. Organize a gallery walk where participants can share the stories behind their creations.

• Outdoor Garden Stroll

If weather permits, a leisurely stroll through a garden or park can be a serene way for seniors to enjoy nature and each other’s company. Consider organizing a flower-picking activity to add a romantic touch. Arrange for garden guides to provide interesting facts about the flora, enhancing the experience. Set up comfortable seating areas for seniors to rest and enjoy the surroundings. Consider collaborating with local nurseries or botanical gardens for a guided tour. Provide small potted plants as parting gifts. Set up an easel and painting station for those who want to capture the beauty of the garden on canvas.

Nourishing News: 5– Top Foods for Eye Health

Healthy eating is good for your eyesight! Studies reveal that the five main eye diseases (cataracts, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), dry eyes, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy) have a nutritional link. Foods with certain phytonutrients, which are p pow erful antioxidants, are important for keeping eyes healthy. The best sources of these nutrients are found in whole foods.

Dark Green Leaf y Vegetables

Dark green leafy vegetables, including spinach, collard greens and kale, contain two of the most essential antioxidants: zeaxanthin and lutein. They can protect the eyes from sun damage, which is linked to reducing the risk of AMD and cataracts. They are best absorbed when eaten with a little fat. Drizzle veggies with olive oil.

Dair y

Orange Fruits & Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables that are orange in color are good sources of beta-carotene, and some are rich in vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant. They may slow macular degeneration, prevent dry-eyes and decrease the risk of cataracts. Mangos, cantaloupe, oranges, carrots and sweet potatoes are rich in these antioxidants. Eat plenty of colorful fruits & vegetables daily for maximum health benefits.

Fish

Fish, especially fatty fish, is rich in omega-3s, which may relieve dry eyes. Good sources of omega-3s are salmon, trout, albacore tuna, herring, anchovies and sardines. Salmon is also a good source of Vitamin D which reduces inflammation and supports eye health. Try to incorporate fish into your meal plan at least twice a week.

Green Tea

Dairy products, such as low-fat milk and yogurt, may be good for the eyes. Both contain zinc and are excellent sources of vitamin A and D, if fortified. Zinc and vitamin A can help with night vision and prevention of cataracts. Vitamin D reduces inflammation. If you tolerate dairy products, try to have at least 2 to 3 servings per day. Yogurt is a healthy option for breakfast or as a snack.

Green tea is associated with many health benefits. Research suggests antioxidants in green tea, including catechins, help protect the tissues of the eye from glaucoma and other eye diseases. Enjoy a cup of green tea daily!

Other Factors to Consider

 If you’re at risk of developing AMD, an eye supplement may be recommended. Discuss the risks & benefits of supplements with your eye care professional. Only use as directed.

 Maintaining a healthy body weight and lifestyle contribute to eye health.

 Keep blood pressure and blood sugar under control and avoid smoking.

 Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes.

 If you spend a lot of time focusing on one thing, your eyes can get fatigued. Give your eyes a rest to reduce eye strain.
