2018Â PRESIDENTIAL AWARDEES
JAN/FEB 2019
BURBANK VOLUNTEER
the
Presidential Awardees President George H.W. Bush often said that, "Any definition of a successful life includes service to others," and he lived out those words to the fullest. President Bush's passion for citizen service and volunteering was present from his first day in office. Bush launched the Points of Light movement and signed the 1990 National Service Act setting the stage for the creation of the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). The President's Volunteer Service Award is an initiative of CNCS and is administered by Points of Light. Through a shared mission of inspiring more to answer the call to service, the President's Volunteer Service Award celebrates the impact we can all make in bettering our communities and our world. It is because of President Bush's vision and passion for service that the President's Lifetime Achievement Award is possible. The President’s Lifetime Achievement Award is the premier volunteer awards program, encouraging citizens to live a life of service through presidential gratitude and national recognition. BVP board member, Pete McGrath, recognized those volunteers who completed 4000 hours or more in their lifetime and received this prestigious award.

FRANCES DIBONA SPOTLIGHT AWARD
JAN/FEB 2019
BURBANK VOLUNTEER
the
2018 Frances DiBona Spotlight Award The Spotlight Award was created last year by the program's staff to honor a volunteer, volunteer group, or volunteer station who has demonstrated exemplary support for those they serve, who contributes and inspires others, and whose actions reflect their dedication and commitment to the Burbank Community. Frances Di Bona embodied the core of this award. She started volunteering with the Burbank Volunteer Program in July of 2011. Her warm smile and kind disposition was always welcoming to those walking into the Joslyn Adult Center. She was also very passionate about her work with the Mary Stoica Cafe. Frances enjoyed being of service to others and being able to create a space for conversation, laughter, reminiscing and enjoying the company of others. Frances also served as a BVP Advisory Board member. On April 13th, of this year, Frances passed away surrounded by her family. Frances’ daughter, Renee Corso was in attendance to present the award to this year’s recipients, Les and Elaine Rosenberg who has been volunteering at the Burbank Historical Society for over 30 years. Les started before he and Elaine were married and worked with one of the Burbank Historical Society founders, Mary-Jane Strickland. Les has served in many different capacities over the years, including President of the board and Chairman of Program. Les and Elaine would plan and prepare presentations and exhibitions for fellow Burbank-ians and those interested to learn the history of the community, including Lockheed and the Pacific Rail. As a lifelong Burbank resident, there is no doubt that Les loves this City. Elaine became a member when she married Les. Elaine is a current board member who represents the Burbank Historical Society at the coordinating council meetings and has been recruiting and training docents for 10 years. Elaine assists with coordinating and leading the Burbank Elementary 3rd grade school tours. Thank you Les and Elaine for your selflessness, dedication and continuous contribution to the Burbank Community.

RAK WEEK - FEBRUARY 2019
JAN/FEB 2019

the
Random ActS of Kindness Week February 11th - February 17th
Kindness starts with one single act: one smile, one wave hello, one door held open. Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) Week was started in 1995. In 2019, RAK Week will begin on February 11th and end on Random Act of Kindness Day on February 17th. Throughout the seven-day celebration, it is an opportunity for each person to demonstrate that kindness is contagious. You can choose to initiate a kind act or pay one forward. RAK Week falls in line with Valentine’s Day – what better way to share random acts of kindness with those you know and love and those you don’t.
Here are some Kindness ideas: Take the neighbors trash cans out Paying for a random stranger's coffee Leaving your mailman a thank you note Picking up trash you see on the ground Making conversation with someone new
