55 & Beyond: Joslyn and Tuttle January Newsletter

Page 1

HAPPY NEW YEAR! We hope you all have had a wonderful holiday season with family and friends. We are excited to begin a new year with you here at Joslyn and Tuttle. To some, a new year can serve as a fresh start. It brings new opportunities, adventures, and of course, goals. Most of us would like to make changes to meet those goals but we don’t necessarily know where to start. Maybe it’s adding an activity into your daily routine or volunteering in your community. Stay connected with us throughout the year as we continue to bring programs and events to help you meet your goals in 2022. We are excited to announce that there will be two new classes with Harry in the new year. We have added an in-person Fall Prevention class and another Strength & Balance class that will both take place on Tuesdays. They will also be live streamed for those that cannot make it in person. Contact Joslyn for Zoom information. Beginning in February, you will need a BSAC or will have to pay $2 per session to access Zoom classes. You can sign up for a BSAC at the front desk. Activity schedules will no longer be included in our monthly newsletters. You can view our schedule online at burbankca.gov/adults55 or you can pick one up at either Joslyn or Tuttle. We look forward to spending another year with you all!

SHAO CHI WITH HARRY Thursdays at Joslyn 12:30pm-1:30pm This modern approach to tai chi will get you more in touch with your body. The slow movements will focus on balance, core strength, flexibility, gait, posture, and anticipatory postural control. This class requires you to be in a standing position. However, there will be breaks after section of the class to sit. There are six elements of the program and they include: warm up, single sided movements, dual sided movements, stick and towel exercises, ball motions, and a cool down stretch. Try it out for yourself on Thursdays with Harry.

KARAOKE WITH STAN Mondays at Joslyn 12:00pm-2:00pm We are excited to announce that Karaoke is returning to the Joslyn Adult Center this month. Come and enjoy great musical performances by Stan and his wonderful group of gifted singers. They would like to extend an invitation to all those who used to sing and have ever wanted to sing to come and give it a go.

FUN WITH PIANO WITH KAREN Thursdays at Tuttle 12:30pm-1:30pm We would like to give a warm welcome to Karen Higgins, Tuttle’s new piano teacher. Karen was a high school music teacher who taught adults and children of all ages. She is now excited to teach piano at Tuttle Senior Center. This class will be at your own level, whether you are just beginning or more advanced. You will inspire others to practice and learn piano. *ACTIVITY SCHEDULES CAN BE FOUND AT JOSLYN AND TUTTLE CENTERS*

We would like to thank Debbie and Welbe Health for hosting our Holiday Birdhouse Painting activity in December. As you can see, there are some talented seniors at Joslyn. Our next activity with Welbe Health will be a “Scrapbook Journal” event on January 18.

UPCOMING EVENTS We would also like to thank Generation DCD for putting on a wonderful performance for our seniors last month. We can’t wait to have them again.

POSTPONED UNTIL 2/15

TIPS ON IMPROVING YOUR BRAIN HEALTH LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE When you learn a new language, you exercise your brain. As a result, cognitive functions may improve. Increased attentional control and a better working memory are just some of the benefits. We currently offer a French at Joslyn and American Sign Language at Tuttle.

BREATHE DEEPLY AND STRETCH Yoga is a great way for keeping your body limber and your mind sharp. Yoga strengthens parts of the brain that play a key role in memory, attention, awareness, thought, and language. We currently offer a yoga class through Zoom on Monday mornings.

VOLUNTEER Volunteers experience greater satisfaction with life and life purpose, increased selfconfidence, and a greater sense of identity. It may reduce the onset of cognitive decline and is related to lower rates of depression and loneliness. You can contact BVP for information on volunteering.

TAKE A CLASS Challenge yourself with something new. The process of learning and acquiring new information and experiences can stimulate brain cell growth. You also get to meet new people and make friends which provides an additional brain-function boost. You can find everything we offer on our activity/class schedule at the front desk.
