OCTOBER UPDATES
Happy Fall to y’all! It’s hard to believe that we are already in October. Now is the time to start pulling out those cozy sweaters and jackets. But who are we kidding? This is Southern California!
We hope you can take some time this month to crunch through the fallen leaves during a nice leisurely stroll, whip up a batch of pumpkin chocolate chip cookies, carve a pumpkin, or visit a pumpkin patch with some friends and loved ones! Whatever you do this month, know that you are loved and are always considered a part of the Joslyn/Tuttle family. So come and hang out, meet new friends, and find some new hobbies and interests. One way you can give yourself the opportunity to crunch through the fallen leaves and make some new friends is to join our Monday Fleet Feet Walking Group here at Joslyn! Every week there’s a new route taken, and the best part about it is that you can walk at your own pace alongside others.
Have you tried something new at Joslyn or Tuttle lately? If you answered ‘no’, then we encourage you to check out a class you haven’t tried before or attend a presentation that will provide valuable information that you can learn from and apply to your life. It’s never too late to learn something new!
As a friendly reminder, please check in at the front desk before entering a class, event, or presentation. It is important that we track who is in the building in case of an emergency, as well as the number of patrons enjoying the programs we are providing. For those of you who participate in morning workout classes, we urge you to arrive early to grab an open seat. Once those seats are full, that indicates the class has reached capacity. Stacked chairs cannot be used. Lastly, we also wanted to remind those who utilize the poolrooms and Cyber Café that those rooms close 30 minutes prior to closing time, seven days a week.
For the most up-to-date information on classes, events, and our monthly presentations, please visit Joslyn and Tuttle or check out our website.

SENIOR BOARD MEETING
Since 2004, the President of the United States and Congress have declared the month of October to be Cybersecurity Awareness Month, a dedicated month for the public and private sectors, and tribal communities to work together to raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the National Cybersecurity Alliance (NCA) are partnering to create resources and messaging for organizations to use when they talk with their employees, customers, and memberships about staying safe online.
In the meantime, we encourage you to incorporate these 4 simple steps into your own campaigns:
TIPS TO KEEP YOUR ONLINE PRESENCE SAFE
• Use Strong Passwords and a Password Manager
Strong passwords are critical to protecting data. They are long, random, unique, and include all four-character types (uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols). Password managers are a powerful tool to help you create long, random, and unique passwords for each of your accounts. Plus, they make storing passwords and user IDs easy.
• Turn on multifactor authentication (MFA)
You need more than a password to protect your online accounts and enabling MFA makes you significantly less likely to get hacked. Enable multifactor authentication on all your online accounts that offer it, especially email, social media, and financial accounts and use authentication apps or hardware tokens for added security.
• Recognize and Report Phishing
Phishing emails, texts, and calls are the number one way data gets compromised. Be cautious of unsolicited emails, texts or calls asking for personal information. Avoid sharing sensitive information or credentials over the phone or email unless necessary and don’t click on links or open attachments sent from unknown sources. Verify the authenticity of requests by contacting the individual or organization through a trusted channel. Report phishing attempts to the appropriate authorities or IT department
• Update Software
Ensuring your software is up to date is the best way to make sure you have the latest security patches and updates on your devices. Regularly check manually for updates if automatic updates are not available and keep operating systems, antivirus software, web browsers, and applications up to date.

Nourishing News: Tips for Boosting Daily Fiber Intake
Fiber may be a key nutrient for healthy aging! Even though fiber is not digested, fiber-rich foods are an important part of a healthy eating pattern. Fiber has been linked to health benefits beyond digestion and regularity. These benefits include reduced risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer. Despite the benefits , most people do not get enough fiber. Here are some tips for boosting your fiber daily:
How much Fiber?
The 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for fiber: 22 grams for women and 28 grams for men daily .
Recommendations are based on fiber naturally occurring in foods and not from supplements.
Tips for Adding Fiber
• Increase fiber SLOWLY to prevent cramping or digestive discomfort.
• Drink plenty of water.
• Fiber is listed on the Nutrition Facts label. Check the serving size when adding up the grams of fiber.
• Avoid using fiber supplements to meet fiber needs. They will not provide the same health benefits that fiber-rich whole foods offer.
Boosting Daily Fiber Intake
Dietaryfiber is found in plant-based foods: vegetables, fruits , whole grains , legumes , nuts and seeds. For the greatest health benefits, choose a varietyof fiber-rich foods. There are many delicious high-fiber foods to meet daily goals. Check the chart below to see if you meet the recommended fiber intake. If you fall short, try to include the higher fiber or fiber superfoods .
