Our friendly and experienced instructors provide group swim lessons for ages 6 months to adult, from the beginner to the advanced swimmer. Students are evaluated on the first day of class and assigned to the appropriate level for the remainder of the class session.

AQUATICS Certifications American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and Certification NEW The lifeguard training course includes comprehensive training in water rescues, CPR/AED for the professional rescuer and first aid skills. Participants will learn to recognize and respond effectively to emergencies, as well as how to prevent drowning and injuries. A $35 Red Cross material fee is due to the instructor on first day of class.

Aqua Fit Morning Light

Tone, strengthen, and gain flexibility in this moderately paced, low to no impact workout. All muscle groups are worked using water weights and noodles for balance, flexibility, and resistance training. Gentle to moderate cardio promotes stamina and heart health. The two-day course trains Water Safety Instructor candidates to teach courses and presentations in American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety programs by developing their understanding of how to use the course materials, to conduct training sessions, and to evaluate participants’ progress. Learn to Swim Note: There is a $10 Non-resident fee for Learn to Swim and Team classes.

PARENT & CHILD LEVEL A (Max 10) This class is designed to get young children introduced to an aquatic environment by emphasizing a fun experience in the water. In addition to introductory skills to improve comfort in the water and swimming readiness, safety skills and cues will also be covered. All children must have one-on-one adult supervision at all times. Swim diapers must be worn by children.

The Level 2 program is constructed to give students success with fundamental swimming skills. Students will learn to swim on their front, back, and side using alternating and simultaneous arm and leg action with independent forward progression at least 15 feet from the wall. This course will prepare students for swimming 25 yards across the width of the pool, with the instructor providing aid until the student builds endurance for completing the skill independently.

Proof of passing Level 2 or swim evaluation required The Level 3 class builds on the skills learned in Level 2, working towards gaining endurance to swim 25 yards continuously using front and back crawl. Students will learn breathing and timing for front and back crawl, as well as introductory leg movements for butterfly and side stroke. Arm and leg movements for elementary backstroke, diving, and treading water will also be instructed.

Teams YOUTH SWIM TEAM The youth swim team focus on honing skills in the freestyle, backstroke, breast stroke, and butterfly. Coaches also teach swimmers appropriate starts and turns for each stroke in a competitive setting. Swimmers will be encouraged to swim in meets throughout the summer. Students must have passed Level three or qualify for Level four. Students must be able to demonstrate 50 continuous yards in both the freestyle and backstroke. It is preferred that the participants also have a working knowledge of the breast stroke and butterfly.

YOUTH WATER POLO The Water Polo team is a recreational team where participants are eligible to play in games against other recreational teams throughout the spring season. Daily practices include dry-land work outs, swim sets, and water polo fundamentals training including positioning, passing, and shooting. Students must be able to demonstrate 50 continuous yards in both the freestyle and backstroke and the ability to tread in deep water for 1 minute.

The DeBell Golf Club is an 18-hole facility which features 5,608 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 71. The course rating is 68.9 and it has a slope rating of 122 on Kikuyu grass. Designed by William F. Bell, William H. Johnson and Richard Bigler; the DeBell Golf Club opened in 1959 as a bright, new addition to LA Golf. DeBell Golf Club also offers four clubs to be a part of: The Burbank Men’s Golf Club, The Burbank Senior Men’s Club, The Burbank Women’s Club and The Lady Duffers. For more information on these clubs please contact the Pro Shop for more details.

This club offers a regulation 18-hole course and a Par-3 course. The regulation course is very tight and hilly making it challenging for the more seasoned golfer yet still enjoyable for the beginners. Reservations to play DeBell can be made up to seven days in advance by calling 818.845.0022.

Ever wonder if your kids would be interested in the game of golf? Well, this is a fun and affordable way to find out. You will receive a series of 4 one-hour lessons taught by PGA or LPGA Professionals. These lessons are taught in a maximum of ten juniors per group. For one low price your youngster will experience all the different aspects of the game.

Recreational competition is provided for both boys and girls. Teams are coached by volunteers who share their time and talent with the participants.

Youth Team Registration Youth sports league registration is accepted on a “team basis.” Individual players’ names will be added to a Free Agent List.

Players’ names are distributed to existing teams expressing an interest in adding new players or to new teams that are forming.

For those players not contacted and placed on a team, their parents are required to attend a parent’s meeting. The purpose of these meetings is to recruit new coaches. Staff will make every attempt to recruit coaches for these players, however there is no guarantee of placement on a team. Individual players interested in playing these sports should contact the Sports Office.

Volunteer Coaches Needed You can make a difference in the lives of children.

All teams are coached by volunteers looking to make a difference in the lives of children. Volunteers do not have to have a child enrolled in the program. Training and certification is provided.

Scorekeeper Training Earn $10 and up per game!

The Youth Scorekeeper program is available to youth in 7th grade and above. Scorekeepers are needed for youth baseball (February), softball (February), and basketball (September/October).

Youth Officials Training Earn $14 - $15 per game!

The Youth Officials Program is available to youth in 8th grade and above. Youth Officials are used to officiate youth baseball (February), softball (February), and basketball (September/October).

Registration is accepted on a “team basis” only. Individuals may put themselves on a player referral list but there is no guarantee of team placement. Divisional classifications range from top-flight play to low-level recreational leagues in a variety of sports.

The adult program offers play in basketball, roller hockey, slow-pitch and fast-pitch softball, and volleyball.

Southern California Municipal Athletic Federation The City of Burbank is a member of the Southern California Municipal Athletic Federation (SCMAF). The mission of SCMAF is to provide and promote sports training and competition in response to and conducted by its members. The City of Burbank provides opportunities to develop physical fitness and lifelong skills in a variety of team sports for persons of all ages and abilities.

Our philosophy is to instill a positive attitude, good sportsmanship, sound fundamentals, confidence, and high moral standards. The City of Burbank and SCMAF seek to uphold the spirit of sportsmanship and participation.

Registration All teams may register on-line (www.burbankparks.com) beginning the first day of registration or in person during normal business hours at the Sports Office.

All teams may register during the two week registration period. At the time of registration, you will be asked if you are a *resident or non-resident team. Teams registering as resident will be assessed with the resident fee. Teams registering non-resident will be assessed an additional $25 fees. *Resident teams are required to provide residency verification.

Any team which fails to submit the completed Roster and Assumption of Risk paperwork (and residency verification) by the stated paperwork deadline will be removed from the league and all league fees less $50 will be returned.

Burbank Athletic Federation Since 1947, the Burbank Athletic Federation (BAF) has assisted the Department with fostering, promoting, and developing amateur athletics in the City of Burbank. The goals of the BAF include building good sportsmanship and character, citizen training, and physical maintenance for all participants as well as encouraging friendly rivalry, group spirit and team play.

Adults interested in officiating softball, baseball, or basketball can earn up to $30 per game. Officials are required to attend classroom training, pass a written exam, and pass a practical exam. For more information, please call the Sports Office at 818.238.5330.

Burbank Athletics Walk of Fame The City of Burbank recognizes the value of sports and athletic activities within the community. Gallery Shows Kathi Flood

February 3-23, 2017 As a self-proclaimed ‘guerrilla sociologist, Kathi Flood offers colorful narratives about life in Los Angeles. Her assemblages, wall works, and installations tell stories of bloated consumerist values, driving habits, political issues, and the struggle to remain expressive in this age of electronic screens. She uses etchings, drawings, fibers, text, and gutter walk findings on antique supports to tell humorous, sentimental, bombastic stories that catalogue our responses to urban life. Fine Arts Federation March 3-23, 2017

The Creative Arts Center Gallery will host the annual Fine Arts Federation Membership Exhibit 2017. The juried mixed media exhibit representing more than 60 artists will include painting, sculpture, pottery, collage and photography. The City of Burbank Creative Arts Center Gallery and the Fine Arts Federation will host the annual Youth Art Expo. This annual exhibit represents student artwork (K – 12) from Burbank public and private schools. Opening reception and awards ceremony for Middle School and High School is on Thursday, April 6, 5:30 – 7:00 pm. Opening reception and awards ceremony for Elementary School is on Friday, April 7, 5:30 – 7:00 pm. Awards presentations for both events will be at 6:15 pm. Lucy Chamberlain & Andrea Lahue May 6-26, 2017

Having known each other for over 20 years, artists Lucy Chamberlain and Andrea LaHue have long looked forward to a combined exhibition. The celebration of nature is at the core of inspiration for both Chamberlain, a glass artist and LaHue, a painter. Illustrious flowers, natural forms, light and movement come to mind. What might be found and fed by a river, on its way to becoming the sea, are explored and illuminated in this exhibition. Both Chamberlain and LaHue tapped into a familiar channel of natural wonder and have masterfully expressing themselves in their respective mediums. All class registration will only be accepted through the second class meeting and all original class fees will apply.

Non-Resident fees apply to those living outside of the City of Burbank. Non-Residents must include an additional $5 per person, per class.

Enrollment is subject to availability. Programs are filled on a first come, first served basis.

All programs are subject to cancellation if minimum enrollment numbers are not met.

Class schedules are correct up to the date of publication, however may be subject to change without notice.

Refund / Transfer Policy The City of Burbank strives to provide quality recreation classes and programs. If you are unable to attend or are not satisfied with a class, we will be happy to arrange a transfer to another class (if space is available) or process a refund if the following guidelines are met: • A $10 processing fee will be deducted from all participant initiated refund requests.

• Class lasting 3 or more weeks - A request for refund/ transfer must be given to registration staff a minimum of one business day prior to the second class meeting.

No refund/transfer will be issued after the second class meeting.

• Class or workshop lasting 2 or fewer weeks - A request for refund/transfer must be given to registration staff a minimum of five business days prior to the scheduled start date of the class or workshop. No refund/transfer will be issued after this date.

• Material/Supply fees are non-refundable.

• Refunds issued by check will take between 3-6 weeks to receive in the mail.

Teen & Adult Classes Sculpting with Extruded Clay Forms

Weaving

Students will be instructed on how to create functional and decorative pieces; vases, lidded boxed or free standing figurative sculptures, and how to incorporate extruded forms into their projects. Basic introduction in anatomy and proportion for sculpting the human figure, animal and geometric forms will be provided. Beginning students will start instructed projects designated by the teacher, while the advanced students may work independently. A $10 nonrefundable supply fee is included in the class fee. Teen & Adult Classes Ballet, Spring Fling

Classical ballet improves concentration, flexibility, endurance and is used as a foundation for other dance forms. The fundamentals of classical ballet technique are introduced and developed in this class which includes barre, floor stretch, and center work. Barre work will start at the introductory level and progress in difficulty over the session.

Bellydance Level 1 introduces students to the ancient art of Egyptian Bellydance. Basic movements and step patterns as well as the introduction of finger cymbals (also known as zills or saggat) and veil will be taught. Teacher will provide veils and zills for class practice, as well as info on where to buy items.

No prior experience necessary. Level 2 students expand on basic form adding more complex techniques and step patterns. Level 2 students must bring their own veils and zills to class. Recommendation: Mastery of techniques taught in Level 1 or equivalent.

Salsa - Level 1

Learning and perfecting across the floor technique is essential to excel in jazz dance. This class will include a warm-up, barre work, body placement, turns and at least 10 across the floor elements. Dancers need to learn and perform accurately all steps required for each advanced level before moving up.

This beginner class will show you the basic steps and hip movements to this fun and exciting dance-no experience or partner necessary. Get ready to move and groove to great Latin music. Be forewarned: salsa dancing is addictive!

Flexibility Class

Training for flexibility requires moving in the full range of motion of our joint anatomy. Developing a healthy range of stretch allows us to “bend” and move with greater ease while keeping the muscles supple and responsive to the demands of daily activities and exercise. If you are over the age of 60, join the Burbank Nutrition Services (BNS) for lunch! BNS is a City of Burbank lunch program that serves 3-course sit-down lunches at three convenient locations. BNS lunches are nutritious. delicious, and the perfect opportunity to meet new and long-time friends.

Meals are served Monday through Friday (except holidays) at 11:15am. Reservations are recommended. Reservations are taken in person between 9:00 and 11:00am the day of lunch at the location you plan to eat at.
