Gallery Shows San Fernando Valley Art Club June 9 – 29, 2017 The San Fernando Valley Art Club began in 1943 and for the past 70 years has provided a continuing forum for artists of all skill levels and working in most art mediums. Their objectives are to provide the public with a fuller understanding and appreciation of art in everyday life, encourage the production of art, and promote a friendly social atmosphere and mutual understanding between artists, art patrons and the public.
Opening Reception is Friday, June 9, from 7:00 – 9:00 pm.
Titia Estes July 7 – 27, 2017 Titia has always felt a natural instinct while working with clay. Her education at Orange Coast College, as well as Glendale Community College, helped her focused her efforts on learning every aspect of clay and glazes. She desired to understand the relationship of clay to architecture, as well as simple shapes in nature while understanding the textures as they related to the surface of her pieces. She’s an instructor at the Xiem Clay Center & Gallery located in Pasadena, CA where she teaches beginning and advanced hand building. Though she uses the wheel to throw certain elements of her work, predominantly, she employs pinch, coil, and slab techniques.
Opening Reception is Friday, July 7, from 7:00 – 9:00 pm.
ARTIST TBD - August 4 – 24, 2017 Valena Dismukes September 8 - 28, 2017 Photography is primarily a social medium and has the power to enlighten, educate, and bring about a new awareness. Valena first picked up a camera in 1970 to document her son’s growth, soon thereafter she discovered the power of taking photographs and how it made her feel alive. Her interest has been primarily in the human condition and she’s driven by her concern for people in their struggle for justice and dignity. Through photography she has been greatly touch by the degree to which people will open up, often across language barriers, and share themselves through a lens.
Opening Reception is Friday, September 8, from 7:00 – 9:00 pm.

ZERO WASTE
at
The Starlight Bowl
The Starlight Bowl’s 2017 zero waste program is back! Concertgoers will find zero waste stations all around the venue that include separate bins for trash, general recycling, glass, and food waste and soiled paper. Zero Waste Ambassadors will be on hand to assist guests with separating their discards and answer questions. And these efforts are certainly having a positive effect! Before the zero waste stations were introduced in 2011, the recycling rate at the Starlight Bowl was 20%. Now we consistently divert close to 70% of the waste created through recycling and composting on site. We are striving to push that rate higher this season with more participation from the public.
After the jam, please don’t cram!
Here’s how you can help!
When you head to a zero waste station at the venue, be sure to keep all of your materials loose from each other and follow these simple guidelines:
Reduce Take only what you need. Refuse condiment packets, disposable cutlery, straws, etc. (These small plastics are hard to separate out of recycling and composting piles.) Reuse If you bring your picnic, pack it with reusables. Recycle Put recyclables in the right bin — including
food waste! Take your items out of the bag and place each in the appropriate bin. (See image to the right)
Keep ’Em Loose Don’t stuff your items together. Don’t bag items or tie the bag shut! This creates mixed waste that could have been recovered for recycling or composting with a little bit of separation and sorting.
The biggest challenge to our efforts is tied bags containing food, recyclables, and compostables mixed together. You can help by keeping bags open and materials separate, loose, untied and ready for sorting at the zero waste stations. Cramming food inside a cup or tying plastic bags makes the job of sorting very difficult and, worse, contaminates items so they aren’t recyclable. Let’s all get in the zero waste groove and make 2017 the best year ever for recycling at the Bowl!
