LEARN TO SWIM LEVEL 1 (Max 6)

The Level 1 program is constructed to build introductory swim and water safety skills for participants while promoting comfort and enjoyment in the water. Students will learn to swim on their front and back, including floating, gliding, and combined arm and leg movement with forward progression at least 5 feet from the wall. The instructor will aid participants while working up to independence in skills. There is no skill prerequisite for this course. No class on Monday, January 21 and Monday, February 18.*

LEARN TO SWIM LEVEL 2 (Max 8)

The Level 2 program is constructed to give students success with fundamental swimming skills. Students will learn to swim on their front, back, and side using alternating and simultaneous arm and leg action with independent forward progression at least 15 feet from the wall. This course will prepare students for swimming 25 yards across the width of the pool, with the instructor providing aid until the student builds endurance for completing the skill independently. No class on Monday, January 21 and Monday, February 18.*

AQUATICS LEARN TO SWIM LEVEL 3 (Max 10)

Proof of passing Level 2 or passing swim evaluation for Level 3 required. The Level 3 class builds on the skills learned in Level 2, working towards gaining endurance to swim 25 yards continuously using front and back crawl. Students will learn breathing and timing for front and back crawl, as well as introductory leg movements for butterfly and side stroke. Arm and leg movements for elementary backstroke, diving, and treading water will also be instructed. No class on Monday, January 21 and Monday, February 18.* *Participants must be 36 inches to the chin.

MASTERS WATER POLO

The Masters Water Polo program is a co-ed, multi-skill level group. Members’ ages range from 18 to 50+, while experience levels include high school, college and college club to national and international levels as well. Participants must be 18+, with prior water polo experience. Practices consist of warmup, passing and shooting, followed by team assignments and scrimmaging for the remainder of time. PRIVATE SWIM LESSONS

Private lessons are geared for those that need one-to-one interaction with the instructor or those who are looking to work on specific skills outside of a group setting. The objective of this class is to help students feel comfortable in the water, enjoy the water safely, and work towards swimming mastery. Instructors will cater the class material to each individual. There is no skill prerequisite for this course. Number of lessons available subject to instructor availability. YOUTH SWIM TEAM

The youth swim team focuses on honing skills in the freestyle, backstroke, breast stroke, and butterfly. Coaches also teach swimmers appropriate starts and turns for each stroke in a competitive setting. Swimmers may have opportunity to participate in competitions based on availability. Prerequisite: Students must be able to demonstrate 100 continuous yards in both the freestyle and backstroke, and 25 continuous yards in both breast stroke and butterfly. YOUTH WATER POLO TEAM

The Water Polo team is a recreational team where participants are eligible to play in games against other recreational teams throughout the Winter season. Daily practices include dry-land work outs, swim sets, and water polo fundamentals training including positioning, passing, and shooting. Prerequisite: Students must be able to demonstrate 150 continuous yards in both the freestyle and backstroke and the ability to tread in deep water for 5 minutes. January 11 - 24, 2019 I Opening Reception: January 11, 7– 9pm The Betsy Lueke Creative Arts Center will host the “Art Instructors’ Exhibit” showcasing art instructors who teach pottery, painting, jewelry making and weaving. Pottery will include a variety of techniques, featuring functional as well as sculptural forms. Paintings will consist of various media, including watercolor, oils and acrylics. Jewelry will also include various materials and styles.

The Fine Arts Federation (FAF) is a non-profit organization who support arts within the community and is a valued supporter of the Betsy Lueke Creative Arts Center. The FAF helps support the Annual Youth Art Expo, Art Experiences Camp, and art classes and workshops held at the Betsy Lueke Creative Arts Center.

YOUTH SPORTS YOUTH SPORTS

The Youth Sports Program provides various instructional camps, sports leagues, and special programs throughout the year. Recreational competition is provided for both boys and girls. Teams are coached by volunteers who share their time and talent. The City of Burbank is a member of the National Alliance for Youth Sports (NAYS) which advocates positive safe sports and activities for children.

YOUTH TEAM REGISTRATION Youth sports league registration is accepted on a “team basis.” Individual players’ names will be added to a Free Agent List. Players’ names are distributed to existing teams expressing an interest in adding new players or to new teams that are forming. For those players not contacted and placed on a team, their parents are required to attend a parent’s meeting. The purpose of these meetings is to recruit new coaches. Staff will make every attempt to recruit coaches for these players, however there is no guarantee of placement on a team. Individual players interested in playing these sports should contact the Sports Office. League

VOLUNTEER COACHES NEEDED All youth teams are coached by volunteers looking to make a difference in the lives of children. The Park and Recreation Department strives to find a team for each child interesting in gaining a sports experience that is fun and enriching. Volunteers are needed at every level with varying skill sets. Trainings and certifications are available. Your time is a valuable asset to teach life skills to children such as team work, confidence, work ethic, and perseverance.

SCOREKEEPER TRAINING Earn $10 and up per game! The Youth Scorekeeper Program is available to youth in 7th grade and above. Scorekeepers are needed for youth baseball (February), softball (February), and basketball (September/October). Contact the Sports Office for additional information.

ADULT SPORTS ADULT SPORTS

The Adult Sports Program offers men and women an opportunity to participate in organized leagues in a recreational setting. Registration is accepted on a “team basis” only. Individuals may put themselves on a player referral list but there is no guarantee of team placement. Divisional classifications range from top-flight play to low-level recreational leagues in a variety of sports. The adult program offers play in basketball, roller hockey (contracted by the LA Kings), slow-pitch and fastpitch softball, and volleyball.

REGISTRATION

League registration takes place for a two-week period online and at the Sports Office during regular business hours. Players may only play for one team per league and may play in multiple leagues. The $25 resident discount applies to teams in which 75% of the team lives or works in Burbank with proof required by registration deadline. Teams registering in the Corporate Coed Slow Pitch league must maintain 66% of players working for one company. Non-resident fee applies to all others. Officials fees are paid in cash by each team at the beginning of each game. Softballs provided. Registration is on a first-come first-serve basis, and space is limited in each league.

The Stough Canyon Nature Center, nestled in the Verdugo Mountains, has an exhibit hall with educational and interpretive displays, small library, classroom and outdoor amphitheatre. Hiking trails start from the Center. Free maps and information on trails and local habitats are provided.

Good footwork and movement is the foundation of every great tennis player’s game. Look at Roger Federer, Maria Sharapova, Novak Djokovic and Genie Bouchard. They look like dancers when it comes to moving around the court and you can too! Cardio Tennis includes the latest dance music, drills and games all geared to increase your agility, balance, and coordination. It’s so much fun you’ll wonder where the time went!

CLASS REGISTRATION INFORMATION GENERAL INFORMATION • • • • • •

All class registration will only be accepted through the second class meeting and all original class fees will apply. Non-Resident fees apply to those living outside of the City of Burbank. Non-Residents must include an additional $10 per person, per class. Enrollment is subject to availability. Programs are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. All programs are subject to cancellation if minimum enrollment numbers are not met. Class schedules are correct up to the date of publication, however may be subject to change without notice. Guests of Enrolled Participants: Permitting classroom visits are at the discretion of the Instructor who has the responsibility to protect the learning environment and develop rules and procedures to maintain a safe classroom setting. Classroom visits are arranged directly with the Instructor under any rules that the Instructor may establish.

REFUND / TRANSFER POLICY The City of Burbank strives to provide quality recreation classes and programs. If you are unable to attend or are not satisfied with a class, we will be happy to arrange a transfer to another class (if space is available and is prior to the second class) or process a refund if the following guidelines are met: • A $10 processing fee will be deducted from all participant initiated refund requests. • Class lasting 3 or more weeks - A request for refund/ transfer must be given to registration staff a minimum of one business day prior to the second class meeting.
