BURLEY OAKS NEWS Belong, Believe, Achieve
Welcome to the first ever edition of our Burley Oaks newspaper. The aim of the newspaper is to celebrate all the great things that have happened over the last term. We wanted to involve the children in the making of this and have asked them to write many of the articles. We hope in future editions that the children will take an even greater ownership of it.

Trips Year 1/2 to Abbey House Museum On Tuesday we went to Abbey House Museum and to get there we had to go on the coach. It was a lovely sunny day. Then we got off the bus and I was with Luke. Next we walked into the house and it was beautiful. Then we went into the pub and saw Queen Victoria. Only men were allowed in the pub women were not allowed in the pub. After we went into the clothes shop and we saw the colourful clothes. After we went into the school and I was the teacher. Next we went into the pawnbroker’s house and it was absolutely beautiful and posh. Then we had lunch and my favourite thing was prawn cocktail crisps. After we had lunch we played on the park and it was fabulous. Then we went back into the house and we went upstairs to do the seaside at the olden days. The girls had to go into the bathing machine to get into the water. Then we went on the coach back to school. By William S Year 1
Year 3/4 to Murton Park On Wednesday 2nd March I went with my class to Murton Park. A lady introduced herself and she was called Mrs G. After she introduced herself she gave us some hot chocolate and a biscuit. In World War II you where lucky if you got some hot coco. After that one group went to put out a training bomb which was set on fire. We had to put it out in the fastest time - we did it in 26 seconds and the other group did it in 46 seconds. When we went inside we washed the clothes and put them on the clothes line. Then I went to polish the tack. When I finished I went to do some ironing.
When we finished lunch we played out side then the air raid siren went and everybody had to go into their Anderson shelters and we had to sit in there until the all clear siren went. We had to make our own fun in there because there was nothing else to do or play with. When the all clear siren went we went out of the Anderson shelter and went inside the kitchen again. Then I did some weaving mats by poking a hole in some cloth and putting some fabric on it. You had to weave the fabric through the holes. Then Spencer and I measured some butter. Then it was time to go home so we got on the coach and went home. By Nick 3/4A
Mrs Blaythorne’s Literacy Group to Byron School As part of our community cohesion commitment Mrs Blaythorne’s English group have been linked with Byron School in Bradford. They have shared work and photos, spent a day at Nell Bank together and this term was our turn to visit their school for the day. Next term we will be welcoming the pupils from Byron here. This is Sam’s report on the day. First of all we travelled by coach to the school and linked up with our buddy class, 5/J. They have a giant school. Next we played some circle games. Mr Jones’ game was really hard as you had to do a lot of repeating. Mrs Blaythorne’s game was a game where you have to swap places with someone who has the same thing as you. After that we did some song writing, it was called My Town. We had to write it with our partners about the environments around our schools. It was very fun. Then we had lunch. After lunch we worked with an artist. We did some art on laminating plastic which was hard and involved glue, pens, coloured film and ultimately a lot of mess! Finally we got the coach home.
GUNGE IDOL On the 18th March we had a Red Nose Day. We could wear what we wanted. Some people came in pyjamas and some came in silly clothes. Our school was raising money for people in Africa who can't afford to go to school. We saved up our money and brought it into school. Trays came round our classroom with all the teachers’ names on. We had to put our money into the tray of the teacher we would like to see gunged. Then it came to the red nose day assembly… Mr Sells got the most votes (3726 votes) with Mr Milner coming 2nd (1497 votes). We then played a game called ‘Teacher Fortunes’ which was just like Family Fortunes. Mr Sells had surveyed 100 children and asked questions like ‘Which member of staff most looks like they would appear in a Hollywood movie?’ Mrs Newton lost the game but before she was gunged she had to choose an envelope. She chose the envelope that said she would be gunged back to back with 2nd place (Mr Milner!). The gunge was made of custard, angel delight, baked beans, mushy peas and spaghetti. It stank! We raised £850 and Charlie and Tom in Year 6 raised a further £130 by holding a sponsored 24 hour silence. By 3/4M
DECORATE AN EGG COMPETITION Rev Tim Perkins, from Burley Methodists Church, came to one of our assemblies and launched an Easter competition. The task was to decorate an egg (and produce scenery if required) which depicted a scene, story or character from the bible. The competition was the first of our joint projects with the Methodists Church to help celebrate the 400th anniversary of the King James version of the Bible. In September we are planning a project where we will be using Twitter. Lots of eggcelent and eggtraordinary eggs were brought in and judging was no yoke (sorry couldn’t resist!). A winner was chosen from each class and the results can be seen below. Everyone who entered was awarded with a Cream Egg to recognise their hard work.

OTHER NEWS Shine Afternoon Shine Afternoon is where we all swap to different classrooms or outdoor areas and do an activity of our choice. We had over 30 activities to choose from: castle making, bird watching, rugby, golf, photography, High School Musical and much more. It is great fun especially because we get to work with children from all over the school. At the end of Shine Afternoon we all go to the hall for an assembly to tell everybody what we did and show them what we made. By 3/4M Animation Club An after school Animation Club, run by the National Media Museum, has just finished with the children showcasing their fabulous creations to their parents. There has also been cookery, cross stitch, rugby, netball, cross country and taekwondo clubs after school clubs. Not forgetting the Samba / African band and choir at lunchtimes. Bike Ability The first of two Bike Ability training courses have been completed by some of our Year 6 children. The course lasted four afternoons and after a first session of initial safety checks and assessments the remaining sessions were completed on the streets of Burley where the children learnt how to ride safely.
Transition The move from Year 6 to secondary school is an area which we want to make as smooth and as stress free as possible. Over the summer term Year 6 will be visiting IGS on numerous occasions and teachers and past pupils will be coming to visit us to help ensure that it is a successful transition Reception – Indian Afternoon Reception enjoyed an Indian afternoon with Seema Buttoo. They learnt about Indian food, clothes, music and art. Reception are busy at the moment looking for signs of spring and growing their own plants from seed.
Pancake Race On the 8th of March 2011, some children from our school went to compete in a pancake event to win a pancake day t-shirt as well a big basket of goodies! To win the race we had to carry a frying pan and pancake and run along the course to a marked spot in the road, where we were to flip our pancakes at least once before hurrying to the finish line. Our school competed in two races in which we won both! The winner of the first was Kerrensa and the winner of the next was Ben Clark. Unfortunately we did not win either the basket of treats or the cool t-shirt but the pride was still ours. Although we did not win, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and earned a scrumptious chocolate coin for our well-deserved work! Thank you Mrs Coen for taking us to this incredible event! Talia Year 6
Art of Maths Challenge Afternoon at Ilkley Grammar School On the 25th March, 6 children from our school visited Ilkley Grammar school for the Art of Maths challenge. The challenge was to make a picture out of diamonds, hexagons and equilateral triangles. Harrison and myself won the competition and our picture is going to be displayed in Skipton Building Society. By Joseph, Year 6
Musical Soiree In the Musical Soiree 93 people were involved in singing and playing instruments. There were lots of instruments such as cornet, guitar, trumpet and drums. A mixture of solo, duet and groups were played. There was a big crowd of parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles and brothers/sisters. People joined in with the singing. At half time there were lots of tasty snacks for everyone to enjoy. Everyone went home very happy and saying some very good comments about it. By Maya and Polly, Year 3/4
Spanish Through a link with Leeds Trinity University College we were joined for four weeks by two Spanish teachers. They taught at least one Spanish session to every class in school and helped out with many activities and events. As part our partnership with other local primary schools the teachers led a workshop to children from all the Wharfe Valley schools. They spent the day learning how to retell the story of the Three Little Pigs in Spanish and then performed it to parents at the end of the day. They were also joined by Year 13 pupils, and the Foreign Language Assistant, from IGS.
Manor House – Art and Poetry Workshop On the 18th March Mrs Coen’s English group went to the Manor house in Ilkley to do an art and poetry work shop. We made Sculptures with Sally and did poems with Andrew. First we did art, Sally gave a short explanation about what we were going to do. We were making landscapes with natural resources, glue and clay. We had about 45 minutes to do it. Everyone’s turned out different. Then we did poetry. Andrew asked Owen what cereal he had had that morning then we wrote a random piece of work in a minute. After that we got an object that we asked questions about and that was our poem By Thomas 5/6
Mega Music Day Wednesday 25th May will see the whole of Key Stage 2 travelling to Bradford City Football Stadium. There will be around 100 Bradford schools and 13,000 children there. The event will be hosted by Barney Harwood (Blue Peter presenter) and will be a day with children performing songs that they have learnt and listening to other musical entertainments.
SPORT PAGES Tackling Numbers On Monday afternoons a group of year fours are sent to the science room. We are taught rugby based maths for an hour by a Leeds Carnegie player called Adam. We have learnt about graphs, grid methods for our times tables, practiced long division and subtraction and we also recapped perimeter and area. After an hour of maths we have an hour outside doing tag rugby. Some warm ups we do include scarecrow tig, rats and rabbits and huggie bears. After warm ups we sometimes play a game of tag rugby or sometimes we practices our catching, passing, scoring and other skills used in the game. We are put into three or four teams. Then we play a game. The rules are you have a rugby ball and you have to pass the ball backwards and if you get the ball you have to run to the try line. If someone from the opposite team gets your tag you have to pass the ball. To score you have to touch the ball down on the try line. We all enjoyed Tackling Numbers because you get to practise your maths as well as rugby. We would all like to do Tackling Numbers again if we had the opportunity. By Alice, Jess and Ella May Sporting Fixtures This term we have had our most hectic term ever for sporting fixtures. The Year 6 boys have taken part in the IGS Astroturf League. The children played a total of 8 matches on Friday nights and ended up finishing 7th in the league which qualified them for the Europa League Cup. We came second in the cup even through we were undefeated throughout the tournament. Year 5 took part in an IGS basketball tournament (photo on left) and came joint first. On the same night the Year 4’s competed at dodgeball (photo on right) and also came back with the winners’ trophy! Year 3, 4 and 5’s went to Pool Primary School to compete in football tournaments and also took part in IGS tournaments. Bradford City have been in to coach our girl’s football team.
The busy schedule continues after Easter with cricket, rounders, handball, athletics and speedminton fixtures to attend. A big well done to the children for their commitment and for the spirit they have competed with. Thank you to the parents who have offered lifts and have got kits washed and back quickly so they could be used again the next day. A big thanks also to the staff that have volunteered to take the children in their own time. The Year 5 Basketball Champions
