THE THIRTY-THIRD edition of TEFAF Maastricht will once more eclipse all other commercial art fairs due to its broad scope and the sheer quantity of high quality objects for sale. Private collectors, institutional buyers and art lovers from around the globe will make the journey to southern Holland to view and perhaps buy the finest art works on the market. Building on last year’s more transparent selection policy, there will be twentyfive new exhibitors out of a total number of two hundred and eighty, presenting works from twenty-nine classifications. Fine and decorative arts for sale will range from ancient objects to modern and contemporary works. In these pages we attempt to convey the breadth of the fair by illustrating objects from various categories including tribal art, antiquities, old masters, antiques, Asian art, works on paper, and modern art. Also presented at the fair will be twentieth-century design, jewellery, manuscripts, silver, textiles, ceramics and photography.
One of the biggest draws for visitors this year will be the showing of a rare landscape by Vincent van Gogh on the stand of London gallery, Dickinson. This large-scale oil, Peasant woman in front of a farmhouse, was painted in 1885 during Van Gogh’s time living in Nuenen in the Brabant region of Holland. The TEFAF Art Symposium will focus on the recently commissioned report: Art Patronage in the 21st Century, with a presentation by the author Anders Petterson. This will be followed by a discussion group.

TEFAF’s commitment to cultural heritage continues with financial donations through the TEFAF Museum Restoration Fund and the Prince Claus Fund. The former has awarded money to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art to assist with specific projects. These are the restoration of Frank Lloyd Wright’s The Kaufmann Office (V&A) and the analysis and restoration of Pietá, an oil by Melchor Pérez Holguin (LACMA). The Prince Claus Fund will be supporting the preservation of the cultural heritage of Suriname by helping to finance preparedness for manmade and natural disasters. Portuguese, European and fusion art For over 30 years São Roque has held an undisputed reputation in the world of Art and Antiques for the rarity and exclusivity of its artworks, in an unmatched symbiosis of quality and guaranteed authenticity. A reference for both private and institutional collectors as well as for international Museums, São Roque’s team of specialists ensure that it maintains its preeminent position in an ever-growing and globalized Art and Antiques market.
J B Ceylon (Sri Lanka), 17th century – first half Prov.: S.P. collection, Oporto A large Ceylonese silver mounted ivory box, built in one-centimetre thick dovetail joined ivory panels, most certainly designed to store rare and valuable objects. The whole surface is profusely high-relief carved with large vine scrolls and stylised lotus motifs, characteristic of decorative compositions from Ceylon, while its sculptural subtlety is clearly inspired by European printed works. Identical refinement is evident in the sophistication of the silver mounts and exceptional openwork extant key. The box carving quality is analogous to the best pieces produced for the Portuguese market, its unusually wide and thick ivory plaques endowing it with the opulence of earlier caskets made in the Ceylonese Imperial city and contrasts with other ivory examples produced for the
Dutch market in the second-half of the 17th century. These, although comparable in their floral decorative elements, are distinct in their execution and scale of motifs, which became larger and shallower (see Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, inv. no.º BK–1971–30). The artistic and technical qualities that define this jewellery box, set it apart from all other known analogous pieces credited to this rare South Asian production.

N I Nippo-Portuguese, Momoyama period (1573 – 1603) Height: 10.0 cm An important dark-brown and black lacquered inrô of sprinkled maki-e decoration, enriched by mother-of-pearl tesserae elements. As with other typologies of Namban objects, either for domestic use or for export, it reflects the allure of the newly arrived Portuguese — known as ‘Barbarians of the South’ or nanban-jin — portraying them as stereotypical yet caricatural figures in their characteristic late 16th century costume. On one side the artist depicts three figures, possibly jesuit priests, and on the other two conversing merchants or officials. Of great iconographic relevance only two other related inrôs are known, one of which at the Musée National des Arts Asiatiques – Guimet in Paris.

the neoclassical halls of the Palais Brongniart, the historic home of the Paris stock exchange. The location in the 2nd arondissement is within the gallery district and a short walk from the Musée du Louvre and other fine public art collections. The fair has become an important fixture of the collecting calendar for institutions and the public who can acquire works and meet with experts and fellow connoisseurs. Thirty-nine international dealers will present works spanning most European schools from the Renaissance to modern and contemporary movements. There will be four new galleries exhibiting this year including Ary Jan (specialists in Oriental art), Taménaga (dealers in Japanese and European modernism) and Romano Fine Arts (selling old master works). Every drawing will be authenticated and checked for quality so that buyers can enjoy an atmosphere of candour and have confidence in all acquisitions. The International Symposium will be devoted to the topic of gardens and botany; drawings have always served as an essential tool for the scientific and aesthetic appreciation of nature. This year the institutional loan exhibition will be sourced from the holdings of the museums of Marseille. Selected drawings will also embrace the theme of nature – in particular, gardens and botany. Alongside this display will be the launch of a catalogue of 18th-century drawings from Marseille institutions. The ever-popular Drawings Week will take in over twenty-three museum exhibitions and graphic art collections including those of the Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay and the Centre Pompidou. Private visits will be arranged to many of these institutions for curator-led tours. New participants to Drawings Week in 2020 will include the Musée de l’Armée, Musée Roybet Fould, Musée Jean-Jacques Henner and Fondation Jean et Simone Lurçat. For more information on the fair, Drawings Week and the Symposium please visit: www.salondudessin.com
