The Heights
T
here’s no denying the charm of Burnaby Heights. You’ll get that small-town feel right in the middle of the city, while spending time shopping at unique stores, or sitting down for a cup of coffee, ice cream or dinner at one of its many restaurants. The Heights is right on top of one of the three hills in Burnaby facing the Burrard Inlet. Thousands of immigrants – many of them Italian, English and Irish – came here in the early 1900s with the opening of Hastings Street and the arrival of the streetcar in North Burnaby in 1908. Soon after that,

the first merchants made their way to set up their shops. Some of the businesses are still owned by second or third-generation merchants, while others are owned and operated by new immigrants of diverse cultures. On the first Saturday in June, be sure to go to Hats Off Day with 50,000 of your neighbours at Burnaby’s biggest festival. Local businesses “tip their hats” to customers with activities, food and fun throughout the day. You’ll also find some festivities around Halloween and the Lunar New Year.
The Hats Off Day parade has been going on since 1989. The huge, one-day festival has a colourful parade, followed by a street party. Hastings is shut down from Boundary Road to Gamma Avenue for the annual car-free festival.
The Heights Merchants Association, which has been an official business improvement area since 1994, focuses on issues affecting the area, including street beautification, cleaning and decorative signs, and creates the annual business directory, not to mention their fun seasonal events. Creativity in the city Take in an exhibit at the Burnaby Art Gallery at 6344 Deer Lake Ave. Open now for more than 50 years, the gallery now hosts lively public programs meant to enrich visitor experiences and appreciation of the arts. Artist talks and workshops on site hosted in conjunction with exhibitions are a regular occurrence at the gallery. Items not in use are stored offsite at the climatecontrolled environment of the old Ceperley Mansion built in 1910. Original handpulled prints make up 80 per cent of the collection, with drawings, collages, paintings and sculptures filling out the rest.

Hidden Gems
Playground of the Gods The Playground of the Gods, on Burnaby Mountain, is a home away from home for 50 or so totem poles carved by Japanese artist Nuburi Toko and his son Shusei. The Tokos are members of the Ainu culture, Japan’s first inhabitants. Installed on the top of an open slope looking west over Coal Harbour, the poles honour the ties between Burnaby and its Japanese sister city, Kushiro.

urnaby is home to a variety of different groups of people, and there are plenty of opportunities to celebrate our diverse languages and cultures. Spend the day at Swangard Stadium in July for the Fiji Festival. The free annual festival showcases traditional Fijian ceremony, entertainment, talent and fashion show, traditional foods, a cultural display and soccer tournament.
There’s also the Burnaby Blooms festival held annually in May. The city co-hosts the event with the Burnaby Rhododendron and Gardens Society in the day-long celebration to promote sustainable ecology with a variety of entertainment including miniworkshops, horticultural and nature tours, a silent auction, arts activities, and artisan, pottery and plant sales. In August, check out the Korean Cultural Heritage Festival at Swangard Stadium. The full-day event includes an opening ceremony with special guest performances, live entertainment and food, all to celebrate the multiculturalism of Metro Vancouver. In the late summer, celebrate Burnaby’s
diverse cultures at Culture Days in Canada. Experience fun and free public programming at the Burnaby Village Museum, Burnaby Art Gallery and the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts during the celebrations. See www.culturedays. ca for details. Also check out the fifth annual Nikkei Matsuri Japanese festival in August to September. A matsuri (festival) has been part of the Japanese cultural tradition in cities across North America. The family-friendly festival will introduce you to Japanese culture through food, music, entertainment, Japanese kids games and more. Visit nikkeimatsuri.nikkeiplace.org for more information.

Nikkei 日系 Nikkei: “anyone with one or more ancestors from Japan, or who self-identifies as Nikkei” (XI COPANI Eleventh Pan-American Nikkei Conference 2001)
Nikkei Centre opened in Burnaby in 2000 with plans to expand its museum and archives in the future; that future has become reality, thanks to a generous donation from Yoshiko Karasawa, and in part with funding from the Government of Canada. On July 20, 2019, the new Karasawa museum display space opens with an inaugural exhibit called Nikkei 日系. Pronounced nee-kay, the label often requires explanation. More than 25 individual and family stories, accompanied by objects, photos, films, and creative outputs of research from the museum archives, will give evidence of lived experience of Nikkei in Canada and encourage discourse on the term. We invite you to investigate broader questions of migration, racism, identity, and belonging through learning about the Japanese Canadian community’s resilience, resistance, and resonance in this country.
