Burnaby residents posed for pictures, waved signs and even delivered doughnuts to the Greenpeace activists who occupied the Westridge Marine Terminal on Wednesday.

A number of local residents came out to show their support for the demonstrators who were chained to the front gate and in other areas inside the terminal.

Hartwig Boecking, a 25-year resident, applauded the protest.

“I support this in many ways,” he said.

“You don’t have to be an environmentalist to be in favour.”

Another protester arrived

wearing a large yellow sign reading: “Clean water is worth more to us than dirty oil.”

The man, who would not give his name, said he was a former dog-walker and that all six of his dogs had died of a form of cancer, which he blames on the toxins he says are issuing from the terminal.

“These people,” he said, pointing to the two protesters chained to the gate, “are the bravest souls out here.”

Alan Dutton of Burnaby Residents Opposing Kinder Morgan Expansion (BROKE) said there’s a mixed reaction to the Greenpeace action.

“While many have expressed support, others are cynical about

the long-term effect,” said Dutton.

“I am optimistic, however, that the Greenpeace demonstration will not only raise public awareness about the multiple dangers of shipping and storing oil in major cities it will stimulate debate about the most effective ways to oppose building a new larger pipeline, more than doubling oil storage capacity on Burnaby Mountain and dramatically increasing tanker traffic through Second Narrows and Vancouver Harbour.”

Greenpeace B.C. director Stephanie Goodwin said the activists were grateful for the support.

“It was great,” she said. “We also heard from them that they want more information and more input into this issue.”

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN BURNABY More storage tanks: The number of tanks at the Burnaby storage terminal would double, with 14 new storage tanks installed. That would add another 3.9 million barrels of oil to the facility’s capacity.

Currently, the terminal can hold 1.6 million barrels.

More tankers at the dock: The number of tankers that could dock at the Westbridge Marine Terminal would triple to three. A new vapour recovery and re-injection system to help control emissions would also be built.

More tankers in Burrard Inlet: The number of tankers would increase dramatically from about 60 a year to over 400 a year if the project is approved.

Who has the final say? The National Energy Board will review the project and make a recommendation to the federal cabinet.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his cabinet will have the final say on whether the project is approved or not.

Keith Stewart was one of two activists who chained themselves to the terminal’s front gate. He said he and his partner had no trouble accomplishing their part of the action.

“I can’t speak for those inside, but no one challenged us,” he said.

Although not chained to the gate, she sat beside them, telling reporters she will do all she can to stop the pipeline expansion project.

“I think it’s wonderful, and I want to thank Greenpeace,” said George, 72.

TransLink is under fire once again, after an easy fare evasion tactic was discovered with the Compass Card before its rollout.

However, Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan said he’s not surprised that the card has been riddled with controversy.

The Compass Card and its fare gate system, which were brought in to deal with fare evasion, have a loophole for riders to avoid paying for all zones – and TransLink has said it was aware of the potential for it.

“I’ve been warning about these problems well before they started instituting them,” Corrigan told the Burnaby NOW. “It doesn’t surprise me. I imagine many, many other ways for people who are determined to avoid fares will find a way to evade them.”

The Compass Card was recently embroiled in controversy when the projected $171 million cost to implement the system increased by $23 million.

“And that’s just the tip of the iceberg, because they buried as much of those expenses as possible. It doesn’t count the renovation at Metrotown or Broadway,” Corrigan said.

The other issue is future maintenance costs, which Corrigan says will be exorbitant seeing as how the gates will be worn out rapidly with use.

“One of the most expensive things to build in a system is to maintain it. With the panels, the abuse they’ll be taking will … break down regularly. Will they have staff out at those locations all the time? What will they do when they break down? How do people get through? Will they send staff out to open and close the gates or do it automatically from a central office?

Corrigan said it comes

“The (then) Minister of TransportationKevinFalcon went on holiday to London with his future wife, and they pointed out having the fare gates in the London system,” he said. “They then gathered up the contribution of federal dollars and then pushed TransLink into doing it despite the fact they weren’t able to produce any business case to justify it.”

Corrigan said comparing a city with eight million people when about 75 per cent use the transit system, to a city with two million with 14 per cent using transit shows the economics don’t make sense when the smaller city tries to implement the same system.

“It’s one of those situations where people really pandered to the public about finding a solution to fare evasion knowing full well that wasn’t going to happen,” he added.

“It was politically expedited to get a solution, but realistically you’re never going to solve the problem.

It’s $20 million more a year to chase after a $5-million-ayear problem, which makes no economic sense at all.”

However, TransLink’s Mike Madill, vice-president of enterprise initiatives, told the NOW the authority is taking a multi-faceted approach to reduce fare evasion.

“We think that the Compass Card is going to help us reduce the amount of fare evasion,” he said in a phone interview. “We don’t want to talk about meth-

ods people might (use to) cheat the system. There’s no system that’s a perfect system.”

Madill said all TransLink really wants is people to pay and the vast majority does.

“We want everybody else to pay their fares too,” he added.

The extra $23 million cost, Madill said, came from inflation, extra project management charges and system changes as the original budget was drafted in 2009.

“It’s a long-term investment,” he said when asked if adding more Transit Police would have been cheaper.

“A lot of our equipment is nearing the end of its life. Current fare equipment was needed, and we had to make an investment in new equipment anyway.”

Through the Compass Cards beta testing, other issues were highlighted such as the noise reader being too low in volume, unable to read the screen in bright sunlight and the machine being slow in recognizing the card, Madill said.

“We’re looking to tweak that,” he added. “I’m comfortable by the time the gate system goes into full operating mode we’ll have that all sorted out.”

The Compass Cards will be fully rolled out in spring 2014.

As for Corrigan, he said the whole process has been frustrating.

“It’s not worth paying all that money when I know people are determined to evade fares. They will find a way around the system.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dog owners have lessons to learn Dear Editor:

I walked around Burnaby Lake last Sunday with my very well-trained dog. One hundred per cent of the dogs I met were not vicious – playful, excited, happy or nervous, but not vicious.

The same could not be said for about 80 per cent of the owners who were nervous, timid, aggressive or fearful. If their dog started to approach my dog – both with tails wagging – many of the owners deployed such tactics as yelling at me to keep my dog away from theirs, pulling their dog in so close it was walking on its hind legs only, ducking behind trees or in one instance, even climbing a tree.

It seems to me that the problem is not that there is an “increase” in vicious dogs, but there is a definite increase in people who don’t understand dogs and dog etiquette.

They don’t understand their own dog, nor do they understand the need to socialize their dogs.

A puppy is always going to be bouncy and full of energy – but that is no reason to stop it from approaching another dog. By doing that, the dog will never learn manners and down the road, it may do something that may be interpreted, or actually, be vicious to other dogs or people.

2. The owners need to be more proactive in teaching their dogs the basics – come when

3. Dog owners need to be less fearful of dogs interacting when they meet. I always call out, “My dog is friendly!” when approaching people with dogs that want to meet – but then I have a well-trained dog who has been socialized.

We develop and maintain a regional homelessness plan and sponsor a regional count of the homeless population every three years.

The very nature of invisible homelessness makes it challenging to quantify. While we get a sample of those living in temporary shelters, we do not capture everyone who may be invisibly homeless.

Many informally pay rent by doing survival sex work, chores or other types of labour. Often one has to give an address to access support services such as food banks or shel-

ter allowances. In these cases a family or friend’s address is sometimes used, which keeps their homelessness hidden.

For example, Hollyburn Family Services on the North Shore gets 20 calls a day from seniors at risk of becoming homeless.

Research done by the United Way of the Lower Mainland shows that the number of seniors waiting for social housing increased by 45 per cent from 2009 to 2012. Each steering committee mem-

ber brings an important piece of the puzzle to the table.

We, as a community, must find permanent solutions to homelessness. This goes beyond providing people with shelter.

With a rising number of mental healthrelated calls, Burnaby Mounties are using a proactive strategy to help complete the circle of care for people in need of help.

Two years ago, Burnaby RCMP introduced a new position in the detachment – a mental health intervention coordinator.

“There was a need identified by our management that they needed some kind of liaison role between the detachment, the police, the hospital and the mental health community,” said Const. James Grandy.

Grandy volunteered for the position in 2011 and since then has been responsible for creating comprehensive plans for people who trigger multiple police calls on a monthly, and sometimes weekly, basis.

Together with nurses from Fraser Health, Grandy develops plans to help these repeat callers get the help they need.

“It’s involving people who have expertise in this area and have the resources and ability to put together a management plan,” he said. “In some cases it’s having a psychiatrist involved, or sometimes it’s a case worker involved.”

Once a week Grandy meets with a Fraser Health nurse to go over the files he’s working on. They share information, be it regarding a person who has been dealt with by police, as sometimes Fraser

Health isn’t even aware of the person.

By sharing information, police and health professionals are able to provide a well-rounded cycle of care, Grandy said.

“We discuss files and people in the community who we found are either highrisk or chronic in nature due to their mental health, and we would go out and visit these people and problem solve their issues,” he added.

According to a Burnaby RCMP report recently submitted to city council, Burnaby Mounties responded to 1,476 mental health-related calls in 2012, a nine per cent increase from 2011.

While Grandy is sure the number of calls will continue to rise as new people in the community deal with mental health issues, he hopes that by being proactive with repeat and chronic callers, Burnaby can reduce or eliminate these calls altogether.

“There are several people who have been identified as being a burden on police resources, and so I have, in consultation with mental health (workers), been able to reduce a lot of their calls for service,” he said.

One person in particular stands out to Grandy. Earlier this year, a man was calling police on a regular basis, sometimes multiple times a month. It turned out the man was an alcoholic, so Grandy took his file to Fraser Health’s substance abuse services and after getting the help he needed, police haven’t been called to his home since.

“That’s an example of us being able to identify somebody’s need and being able to know who to contact and who to hook that person up with in the community,” Grandy said.

Assaults spark police warning Burnaby Mounties are urging women to be extra cautious at night.

Since Sept. 18 there have been three reported incidents where women walking in the area of Government Street and Lougheed Highway were grabbed by a masked man. Each incident took place sometime between 10 p.m. and midnight, and in all cases the woman either resisted or

screamed, spooking the suspect who then fled on foot, according to a Burnaby RCMP media release.

Police described the suspect as 5-3 to 5-9 with a slim build. In each incident, the man was wearing dark clothing – possibly a hoodie – and a black mask over his face.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 604-294-7922.

October marks the national Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and no brand has been more crucial to the %ght against the disease as Estée Lauder, in its relentless campaigning and fundraising over the last two decades. The exquisitely beautiful Elizabeth Hurley has played a vital part in the Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign since signing as the company spokesperson back in 1995. Intelligent and articulate, Elizabeth Hurley gave us an update on the company’s crusade against the agonizing disease, and even found time to give us a couple of valuable beauty tips.

You’ve been an Estée Lauder spokesperson for almost two decades -- a rare thing in this industry. When you signed in 1995, did you think it would become a role of a lifetime?

I couldn’t have dreamt it. I think my initial contract was two years. I was thrilled beyond belief when it was picked up again, after two years. It’s really been like having a second family.

You’ve personally been affected by breast cancer; you lost your grandmother to the disease. Was that one of the reasons why you’ve been so passionately involved since the beginning? $hen &velyn #"auder! told me about her campaign, during my %rst two or three weeks at the company, I suppose my ears did perk up a bit more because of my grandmother.

It was so sad the way she hadn’t told anybody about her lump, for the very reasons Evelyn went on to explain why she was doing the campaign. Because she said, “women are dying all over the world and nobody is talking about it.” She was so inspired by the AIDS activists, who, at that time, were very active.

You also live and promote a healthy lifestyle, as part of the breast cancer prevention. Can you tell us a little bit more about that?

I love living in the countryside, and I’ve always loved feeling healthy. Evelyn Lauder always said to me, “Don’t put on weight. It is not good for you in any way. Not because you won’t look as good, but it could be dangerous for your health.” It’s great for us that doctors and research scientists are now speaking out and saying that they really do believe that we can make a difference by following a healthy lifestyle. They know that we really have to go out of our way to deliberate exercise. I know I don’t step up so much on that one. I’m very active, but I don’t really do exercise regime, and I should. Eating-wise, I’ve eaten pretty well in the last 30 years, so I feel okay in that aspect.

What are the goals of this year’s “Let’s Defeat Breast Cancer. We’re Stronger Together” campaign?

We know we’ve succeeded in some way with the awareness, and we’ve helped raise a huge amount of money. The Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign itself has raised $48 million US dollars, most of which they’ve donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, also started by Evelyn Lauder, which has raised nearly half a billion dollars for research. What we’re trying to do this year is encourage people to get together and make a difference themselves. Small scale, big scale: it doesn’t matter. It might be getting a couple of your friends together, and all of you making a pledge to do something about it. It’s all about our “Circle of Strength” and all of that can be seen on BCAcampaign.com, and as well as Facebook, which you’re all on, so no excuses!

A special priest performed a ceremony, and each day, the society organized two large meals in the afternoon and evening.

Roy said the afternoon meals fed about 175 people, while the evening meals saw more than 300 every day.

“This has actually been the sixth year of the celebration,” she said. “We started off on a small scale, and every year it’s been growing and getting better with more response from people, more help and support … coming in.”

Roy noted that people from any religious or cultural background are welcome to join in on the harmonious, colourful and positive celebrations.

“We embrace every religion, our door’s open to all faiths,” she added. “She’s (Ma Durga) supposed to be the mother of the universe.

umpkins are obviously one of the more popular harvests this time of the year.

I feel that pumpkin, as a food, is quite neglected in our everyday diets.

Although this bright orange squash is approximately 90 per cent water, it is loaded with betacarotene (an important antioxidant) and a list of nutritional elements that play an important role in a well-balanced diet.

Pumpkin is a member of the squash family and, as with all squash, is a fruit. Any product of a plant containing seeds is botanically classified as fruit, just like melons for example. There are two main general types of squash – summer squash and winter squash.

Summer squash are ones that can not be stored for long periods of time.

Zucchini would be an excellent representation of

a popular summer squash.

Winter squash, on the other hand, can be stored for long periods of time under ideal storage conditions. They should be kept away from light and in an area that is moderately cooler than room temperature. Good ventilation is also necessary. Along with pumpkins, other winter squash are acorn, butternut and autumn squash.

Pumpkins are most popularly used as jacko-lanterns on Halloween night and in varying recipes for pies, cakes and soups. Rarely does one see pumpkin served at the table on its own. It can be used in any application that one would use other winter squashes and undeniably will offer more flavour to the dish.

Cubes of oven-roasted pumpkin, in a medley of other colourful vegetables, are a perfect accompaniment to an autumn meal.

Alternatively, try using small chunks of pumpkin in your next stir-fry or pasta dish. To make preparation easier, cut the pumpkin into workable pieces to aid in peeling and chopping. Winter squashes should always be

peeled before consuming.

Their tougher skin is often challenging for the traditional vegetable peeler, and therefore a knife may be more facilitating for this task. Afterwards, chop the pumpkin into pieces best suited for the recipe being planned.

As well as the flesh, the seeds are also edible.

The seeds are sometimes easily forgotten about and discarded along with the innards. Roasted pumpkin seeds can easily be prepared and transformed into a nutritional snack.

Separate the seeds from the extracted inner filaments and lightly coat the seeds with vegetable or olive oil. Toss with salt and pepper or seasoning salt, if desired, and roast them on a baking sheet in a 450-degree oven, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and crispy, approximately 12 to 15 minutes.

Be careful to watch them closely, as they burn quite easily. Serve them in a bowl on their own, or with a mixture of other seeds, nuts and dried fruit. Pumpkin seeds are credited with a number of medicinal properties and are a great source

of numerous minerals.

However, due to their high fat content, they should always be consumed in moderation. ◆ Dear Chef Dez: We always buy cans of pureed pumpkin this time of year for different dessert recipes. Since pumpkins are available fresh, wouldn’t it be more economical to make it myself? How do I go about doing this?

John G. Chilliwack, B.C. Dear John: It can be done quite easily. Cut a fresh pumpkin in half and remove the seeds and the stringy filaments.

Place the cut sides down on a baking sheet and bake in a 350-degree oven until the flesh is very tender – approximately one hour.

Spoon the cooked flesh off the skin and into a food processor and puree until smooth. Transfer it to a large, fine wire mesh strainer set over a bowl, cover and let drain in the refrigerator overnight.

Discard the liquid, and use the drained puree.

Burnaby council awarded the contract to Jack Cewe Ltd. to construct asphalt curbs, sidewalks and streetlighting improvements in three sections along the highway, including Lake City Way to Underhill Avenue, from Underhill Avenue to Production Way and Gaglardi Way to Bell

Avenue.

The cost was included in the city’s 2013 annual financial plan.

City donation

Burnaby council approved a $500 donation from the money raised at the Deer Lake Save-OnFoods Fun Run to the Burnaby Task Force on Homelessness.

The five-kilometre run was held on May 25 with

175 participants across all ages at Deer Lake Park.

Every year, a charity is selected by the organizing committee, and the task force provided event day volunteers and collected used running shoes for the homeless.

Money for BBOT

The Burnaby Board of Trade is set to receive its annual $100,000 from the city, to continue operating

the City of Burnaby economic development program.

The board receives the funding in quarterly instalments of $25,000.

The finance and civic development committee reviewed the information about the economic development achievements over the year and recommended the grant’s approval.

On the field she is fierce and determined, but crossing the stage in her cap and gown, Christine Sinclair was giddy.

The Burnaby native was the guest of honour at Simon Fraser University’s convocation ceremony on Oct. 11. Canada’s national women’s soccer captain couldn’t keep the smile from her face as university chancellor Carole Taylor officially bestowed upon her an honorary doctorate of laws.

“I will never hear the end of that from my family,” Sinclair laughed as she took the podium at SFU on Friday.

Sinclair, whose name now bears the prefix “doctor” thanks to her honorary degree, did her best to impart words of wisdom to the hundreds of students graduating on the crisp October afternoon. While she joked she’d rather dribble a soccer ball than make follow us on

a speech, Sinclair spoke with pride as she recounted the journey that led her to the podium.

“I’m very honoured and humbled to be with you today as your lives move forward into the world or into the classroom, where so many good things happen,” she told students, faculty and families.

While this isn’t the first degree Sinclair has earned – the Olympian and bronze medalist earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Portland – it’s just as special, she said.

“This is a huge honour,” she told the Burnaby NOW before the ceremony. “I’m excited to be able to share it with my family. … That’s definitely the highlight.”

Sinclair will be back on the pitch for training soon. She and her Canadian women’s soccer teammates will stay in Burnaby to train at Fortius Sport and Health – the city’s newest athletic facility.

“After the Olympics we brought in a lot of young players and John (Herdman, our coach) understands that’s the future of this team,” she said. “We’re still building.”

There are times in our lives when we are overwhelmed with our situation or just feel unhappy. I often see patients in these states, and it’s hard for them to know where to begin. They don’t quite know what they want or need.

In these situations, it can be helpful to ask, “What are your goals?”

For example, “How would you like to feel? Where would you like to be?”

If you are unhappy with a relationship or work conditions, we can ask, “How can I improve them?”

It’s important to spend some time turning our problems into goals. It can bring hope and a positive perspective to a challenging situation. It can empower us when we have felt helpless.

Visualizing your goals is the first step in a progressive plan towards better health and happiness.

Halloween and your pet

What a wonderful and long summer we have had! As we move into autumn, there may be less sun, but there are plenty of other things to look forward to. Fall season brings with it hockey, Thanksgiving, Halloween, FrightNights, Diwali (Indian festival of lights) and more, along with the shorter, chillier days.

Irrespective of the length of day, good times are always around the corner, as long as we are ready for them. No animal might be better at proving this than dogs. Isn’t it just amazing how much dogs enjoy almost any kind of toy, treat or attention? While dogs have an unparalleled love of life, they too can face anxiety and depression of various kinds. The most common anxiety dogs face is noise phobia, especially around Halloween.

Firecrackers, thunder, even smoke alarms can trigger anxiety episodes in a dog sensitive to loud sounds. Generally, the signs of such phobias become evident around mid-October as people may use solitary firecrackers. Subtle symptoms of anxiety include unexplained panting, pacing around, excessive drooling, shivering and hiding. These signs become more evident during evenings when firecrackers may be used. If a dog with a noise phobia is exposed to sudden thunder or firecrackers, they may have a big enough anxiety attack with symptoms comparable to seizure activity. Thus, if the early symptoms are not identified, your dog may be in for a rough time on Halloween night.

There are various treatment and management options available for pets that deal with

anxieties. The gold-standard option would be to remove the offending traumatic cause. In the case of noise phobia, it is obvious that we cannot put on hold festivities and celebrations, or unpredictable thunder. The options for treating sound related anxiety in dogs include thunder jackets, natural pheromone collars, vaporizers, anti-anxiety medications and a whole lot of loving & caring. In some patients, all the above options may need to be exercised in order to provide short-term relief leading up to Halloween. Other patients may need ongoing management of such anxieties.

Even some of the loveliest dogs that have been well cared for since they were puppies can also be affected by noise phobia. This should not be a taboo subject; instead awareness of the issue helps dogs immensely. If you feel your dog may be showing symptoms of anxiety of any kind, it is something that should be discussed with your veterinarian.

If your pet shows abnormal behavior over the coming weeks or has shown abnormal behavior around loud sounds in the past, the best Halloween gift you can give them is an ability to handle such sounds. (Note: Always remember to consult your veterinarian before using any medications as other illnesses may mimic signs of anxiety.)

Daisy has a stub for a tail due to fight with a raccoon a few years back. We think it’s best she be an indoor only cat. For customers wanting an S-Class but needing the versatility to carry seven passengers, MercedesBenz offers the GL-Class.

This large SUV shares many traits with its sedan sibling, such as a serenely quiet cabin, butter-smooth suspension and plenty of power.

When Mercedes introduced the GL in 2006, it got a lot of people’s attention because of its “massive beauty” – but it wasn’t perfect. The engine power was not bad but lagged behind a few of its rivals; its fuel economy was not great, and some of the interior features needed improving.

The GL-Class was redesigned for 2013 and addressed all of these issues and more. Notable changes included a fresh exterior and interior design and new safety features. The available engines were also improved to increase power and fuel economy.

The 2014 model sees the addition of new options, notably the splitview COMAND display and a new transmission mode.

Also, the GL 63 AMG arrives in showrooms this year.

Design

While the current GLClass doesn’t look significantly different from the original, it actually has about 1,000 new parts and is now slightly larger.

Mercedes listened to its customers and made a lot of improvements inside, and now the GL boasts an even more luxurious cabin than before.

Mercedes-Benz has always been a leader in safety and technology. To allow as many customers to benefit from their innovations as possible, every GL comes with

standard features such as Collision Prevention Assist, Attention Assist and PRE-SAFE. As with any Mercedes SUV, you get 4MATIC standard and a lot of nice luxuries like the electronic power tailgate. One area the GL falls a little short in comparison to some of its rivals is that it only seats seven, whereas others can seat eight – but this is a non-issue since the owners of these high-end SUVs probably only carry a few passengers at a time.

Performance

The biggest improvements have occurred under the hood. The GLClass is available with either an all new diesel V6 or one of two new gasoline V8’s.

The V6 engine is a direct-injected, 3.0-litre, clean-diesel turbo, and is a wonderful engine and comes highly recommended. It is rated at 240-hp and a brawny 455 ft-lbs of torque.

The most popular engine will likely be the 4.6-litre, gas-powered V8.

It has a twin-turbo and is also direct injected.

The GL 450 produces 362-hp and 406 ft-lbs of torque. If that’s not enough for you, the GL 550 bumps those numbers up to 429 and 516, respectively. And if you want more still, the GL 63 AMG tops out at 550-hp and 560 ft-lbs of torque with its 5.5litre Bi-Turbo V8.

The bottom line on all of the engines is that while they’re very powerful, they also provide better fuel economy than the previous generation.

This is where the GL 350 BlueTEC stands out with its 8.6L/100km highway rating.

The GL-Class is not a performance crossover SUV by any means, so 0-100km times are not

Pear Tree wins B.C. Hydro challenge Stefania Seccia staff reporter

A local restaurant with deep roots in the community cooked up a winning recipe to win this year’s B.C. Hydro small business energy challenge.

The Pear Tree Restaurant opened in 1997, and this past July and August, the challenge sparked an interest in conserving energy, and the business ended up reducing its use by 18.5 per cent – or $1,000 a year in electricity costs.

“We like to use only what we need in everything we consume: energy, food, fuel and all our purchasing,” said Scott Jaeger, chef and owner of the Pear Tree Restaurant, in a media release.

“So, other than making drastic changes, such as not running the air conditioner, I wasn’t sure if we’d find ways to reduce our energy use.”

The more significant upgrade came as a variable speed drive to the hood vent fan motor, which reduces air conditioning needs in the summer and heating in winter.

“I wish we had this 10 years ago,” Jaeger said. “It saves energy, and it’s made a massive improvement in comfort. The hood still operates at 100 per cent when we need it, but when we’re running it on a lower setting, the sound is about 10 per cent of what it used to be, and there is less air blowing on the staff all day.”

The Pear Tree also changed its kitchen, hallway and washroom lights from 50-watt halogen bulbs to 10-watt LEDs; added motion sensors to the washroom fans and lights; and insulated the hot water pipes.

Behaviour changes came from the staff, as well, with the creation of standard operating procedures for the front of the restaurant and kitchen.

“Now we start shutting down the biggest energy users as soon as the last customer has their main course, instead of waiting 20 minutes or so before realizing we don’t need to be running that equipment,” Jaeger said. “They’re still on top of it. It’s policy now.”

New Homes Registry Keeps Homebuyers Informed This helpful, easy-to-use, online resource is available from the Homeowner Protection Office (HPO) website at www.hpo.bc.ca. Savvy homebuyers are using it to make more informed purchasing decisions.

The New Homes Registry provides free access to find out if a home has a policy of home warranty insurance and is built by a Licensed Residential Builder, or whether it’s built without home warranty insurance.

Homebuyers can obtain valuable information such as the name and contact number of the warranty provider, the builder’s warranty number and whether an ownerbuilt home can be legally offered for sale.

Every new home built for sale by a Licensed Residential Builder in British Columbia is protected by mandatory third-party home warranty insurance. Better known as 2-5-10 home warranty insurance, this coverage includes: two years on labour and materials, five years on the building envelope (including water penetration), and 10 years on the structure. Question: We had terrible blight on our tomatoes this year, so I ended up throwing out lots of little tomatoes. Does blight affect pole beans as well or any other vegetables? What can be done about it so that we don’t have the same problem next year?

– Heidi Naman, by email Answer: Pole beans don’t get blight, but potatoes do.

The last two summers have been so warm and dry, it’s been easy to harvest good crops of potatoes. But in a normal year with sporadic rain, many potato plants have blight by the beginning of August.

Peppers can get late blight but usually don’t.

Eggplants are also said to be susceptible.

Blight is a fungal infection that blows into gardens on rainy winds or splashes up from infected soil. It thrives on wet foliage.

That’s why the usual advice is to grow tomatoes under cover: in greenhouses, or outside under polyethylene tunnels or under south or west wall roof overhangs. Keeping tomato plants dry definitely stops blight and enables you to grow most any tomato you wish, including heritage varieties.

But not everyone has cover available. People with no shelter for tomatoes can get good harvests outside by growing blightresistant tomatoes. When their roots are in natural

soil, tomatoes grow fast and produce massive crops.

The oldest blight-resistant variety is the largefruited Legend, which is sometimes sold as a transplant in garden centres.

Breeding of blight-resistant tomatoes is conventional (not GMO).

This and the newer blight-resistant varieties can be grown from seed.

Gardeners who start their own transplants can harvest big crops of tomatoes by summer’s end. Blight on these varieties starts very late and moves very slowly.

Blight-resistant varieties I grew this year include the cherry tomato Mountain Magic, the paste-type Roma VF, and the beefsteak-type Defiant.

Only recently have these seeds become commercially available, and not everyone has been offering them. This year I bought mine online from Veseys (www.veseys.com).

Grown outside, tomatoes are somewhat later to ripen, but quantities are immense, and with blightresistant tomatoes the plants are still producing when blight-stricken tomatoes have given up.

By the end of September all my tomatoes were black with blight on the older stems but still had fresh, green new stems. By mid-October the new stems were still blight-free, and so was the remaining green fruit which had to be ripened inside.

Tomatoes are easy to freeze (just wash them, dry them and drop them into a plastic bag). Once frozen, their skin lifts off easily if they’re held under hot, running water.

The Zaborniaks were one happy family at the seventh Commonwealth Karate Championships in Montreal last weekend.

Three members of the Zaborniak family from Burnaby came away with gold medals at the elite competiton that attracts national team martial artists from Commonwealth countries such as Australia, New Zealand, India and South Africa.

Alexandra Zaborniak, 14, placed first in sparring in the elite women’s black belt under-54 kilogram age group, while younger sister Stephi also took gold, defeating a South African with a head kick in the final 10 seconds of the match in the girls’ advanced 12/13 under-37 kg final.

accomplishment, winning a sparring gold against two Quebec fighters.

“We’ve seen it with brothers and sisters, but never with three. It’s rare to have three kids from the same family. … It’s a difficult feat, for sure,” said Burnaby Karate Academy sensei Sandeep Gill. “This is not a tournament that is easy to win. It puts into perspective how difficult it was to win.”

Academy fighters also medalled in nine other elite divisions.

Jusleen Virk won the women’s under-50kg final, and Derek Chan was the 18-to-20 men’s under-68kg champion. Chan also picked up a silver medal in the men’s under-60kg class.

Izzy Chan was a silver medallist in the 16/17 female under-48kg final.

Gurkamal Gill, Vanessa Vung, Jai Sanghera, Harpreet Sidhu and Isaac Mand also won bronze medals in their respective elite age and weight classes.

Memorial toast to founder of Shmyr Flyers A memorial for Tony Shmyr of Burnaby will be held on Saturday, Oct. 26 in New Westminster.

Shmyr, a member of the famous Shmyr hockey family, passed away from cancer on Sept. 25.

He was the founder of the Shmyr Flyers, a local senior men’s hockey team without a home rink that was renowned for its fiestiness and prowess in B.C. for more than a decade.

The Flyers won the Coy Cup as senior AA provincial champions in 1971/72.

Tony formed the Flyers hockey team, a team made up mostly of ex-professional players, in the mid-1960s.

FormerNHLandWorldHockey League players who played with the Flyers were Barry Wilcox, Jack Michie, Bobby Schmautz, Alton White, Buddy Gulka, Gerry Sillers

and Paul and John Shmyr, among others.

At one time, his brothers Romie, Mike, Peter, John and Paul all made up one line on the Flyers.

Tony was born in Cudworth, Sask. in July of 1932. He was the eldest of six hockey-playing brothers and two sisters.

He leaves three sons Brian, Grant and Larry.

Tony’s main accomplishments

in life were hockey, construction, family and strong, lasting relationships with friends.

Burnaby Winter Club started the minor hockey tournament season off with big wins.

The bantam AAA Bruins scored a 4-1 victory over the Okanagan Hockey Academy in Chilliwack, while the peewee A1 team won its own Thanksgiving touranament at the Burnaby Winter Club with a 4-0 win over Langley on Monday.

James Malm scored two goals for the bantams, while first-year Ilijah Colina opened the scoring and Tyler Perziuso got the game-winner for the winter club.

Mackenzie Wright and defenceman Nick Watson also had strong games.

Bryce Shiebel recorded the win in goal for the bantam Bruins.

But the road to the final was far from easy, said Burnaby bantam head coach John Batchelor.

The Bruins survived a tough draw and three early morning starts to win its first Chilliwack banner in years.

Burnaby tied Langley 2-2 and Kamloops 4-4 in round-robin play, and were forced to come back from a pair of two-goal deficits against the North Shore Winter Club to advance to the gold-medal final.

In the tournament final, Burnaby gave up just one goal to Okanagan on backto-back five-on-three penalty kills.

“We used this adversity in Chilliwack to our advantage. It’s always our goal to play the maximum amount of games,” said Batchelor.

The win boosted the winter club’s record to date to 14-0-2.

In Burnaby, the peewee A’s blanked Langley behind the shutout goalkeeping by Georgi Wilson.

Christian Fitzgerald potted a pair of goals, while Sean Donaldson and Elan Bar-Lev-Wise had single counters.

The Grandview Steelers hot start cooled dramatically this week.

The junior B Steelers shared a temporary spot atop the Pacific Junior Hockey League last week before dropping a 5-2 decision to the Richmond Sockeyes at home Sunday and a 4-1 loss to the firstplace Delta Ice Hawks on Tuesday.

The back-to-back losses left the Burnaby Winter Club-based club in second place in the Tom Shaw conference with a 6-3-1-2 record.

Quinn Lenihan scored a goal in each of the two losses. Mitchell Steinke also tallied for Grandview against Richmond.

Earlier, the Steelers won their sixth game of the season, beating Mission City 6-3 on Oct. 10.

Christopher Seto was the game’s first star with three assists.

The Burnaby Mountain Lions picked a good time to post their first win in BurWest high school boys’ soccer.

The sixth-seeded Lions upset No. 3 Burnaby South 2-1 in one of two quarterfinal matches at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex-West on Wednesday.

Chilean international student Andres SainteMarie knocked home the game-winning tally off a goal-mouth scramble that resulted from a corner kick late in the second half.

Mountain’s Justin Arcand and Jason Sherle of South exchanged goals earlier in the match.

With their season on the line, South pressed for the equalizer but Lions’ keeper Diego Cortes was equal to the challenge, stopping a free kick opportunity with 10 minutes left and a late corner kick from South.

“Our motivation and aggression was the difference,” said Italian exchange student Marco Hyrat, who had a late point-blank shot on the South goal palmed away.

The Burnaby Winter Club hockey academy is off to a solid debut in the Canadian Sport School Hockey League.

The winter club continued its strong showing in the elite 15 division, posting two more wins before suffering its first loss in regulation time to first-place Yale on Sunday.

Aidan Bate-Smith scored late in the first overtime period to give the winter club a 4-3 win over Okanagan Hockey Academy in Pitt Meadows last Saturday. The students also handed Delta Hockey Academy a 3-1 defeat.

Justin Lee scored the game-winner in a two-goal opening period for Burnaby.

On Sunday, the winter club was defeated 5-0 by Yale Hockey Academy of Abbotsford. In September, Burnaby defeated Yale 5-4 in a shootout in the opening weekend of the school league season in Calgary.

The winter club is currently in a second-place tie with a record of 4-1-2 with Kelowna’s Pursuit of Excellence and Edge School for Athletes from Calgary.

Burnaby has won three of five overtime matches in the first two weeks of league play.

The Burnaby prep team is currently 3-6-1 in the under-18 division. Tyler Welsh scored two goals and three assists in an 8-6 win over Compete of Idaho.

Clanmates tie at shootout

Nicky Jordan led the Simon Fraser University women’s golf team to fifth place overall at the University of Victoria Shootout on Tuesday.

Jordan finished in a tie with schoolmate Erin Farner for 13th place, both with a total score of 162.

In the other quarter-final match, Cariboo Hill staged a second-half comeback behind a two-goal effort from captain Kirk Menezes to defeat the Burnaby North Vikings 3-1 in overtime at Burnaby Lake-West.

Paul Park gave North a 1-0 half-time lead, but the Vikings couldn’t hold off the Chargers.

Menezes tied the contest on a shot to the far corner from inside the 18-yard box. He also scored the game-winner in the second period of OT. Alberto Pincelli counted an insurance goal later in the extra-time period.

“We knew it could have

been our last game of the season,” said Menezes. “We came together as a team and that’s what we did.”

Mountain will take on regular season champion Burnaby Central in a semifinal match at Burnaby Lake West on Monday.

Cariboo Hill will meet Moscrop in the other semi.

The toughest challenge for the Moscrop Panthers senior girls’ volleyball team is getting respect.

Moscrop remained unbeaten in the BurWest district following a three-set

25-16, 25-10, 25-11 win over Cariboo Hill Wednesday.

But the hardest thing for the first-year seniors is being accepted into tournaments dominated by the top-ranked 4A teams, said fourth-year coach Kim Or. The Panthers, which have won district banners for the past three seasons, were ranked as high as 10th early in the year, but soon fell out of the polls after finding difficulty earning invitations to the big-name tournaments.

“We need to get into tough tournaments,” said Or. “Playing against tough competition, we’ll get better.”

GabrielHo-GarciaofBurnabyandNewWestminster’s Brendan Bissett were named by Field Hockey Canada to the national team that will represent Canada at the Junior World Cup in India in December.

Canada qualified for the worlds after reaching the final of the junior Pan American championships in 2011. It is the first time since 2001 that Canada has qualified for the world championships.

The win kept Burnaby’s overall record intact at 90-1.

Last year, four teams from the winter club made it through to the AAA provincials. This season, Reynolds expects an equal number could make it again in 2014, including a “super competitive” Kelowna club that held a two-goal lead on the Bruins before eventually losing 5-3.
