Making mochi Volunteers at the Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre pound glutinous rice into a paste – part of the process for making mochi, traditional Japanese rice cakes – at the centre’s annual year-end celebration, Mochitsuki Day, held last Sunday. Many of those attending the event got in on the fun and took a turn pounding the rice. The free event included lunch, tastings, and mochi and manju (a traditional Japanese dessert) sales. There were some small fluctuations but no major shifts in this year’s property assessment roll, released by B.C. Assessment on Thursday. The assessments for Burnaby properties show some slight changes but nothing like past years. “Most homes in the North Fraser region are relatively stable or slightly less in

value compared to last year’s assessment roll,” said Zina Weston, deputy assessor, said in a press release. “Most single family homeowners will see modest changes in the -10 per cent to +5 per cent range. Most strata residential properties have also changed in the range of -10 per cent to +5 per cent.” Homeowners in the North Fraser area – including Burnaby, New Westminster, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Anmore and Belcarra – can expect to

receive their assessment notices in the next few days, according to the release. Overall, residential property taxes in Burnaby increased by 1.05 per cent from last year, going from $66.682 billion to $67.390 billion, the release stated. In 2013, the total assessment of residential property values in Burnaby increased by 4.95 per cent, and in 2012, by 9.68 per cent. The biggest change in local residential market trends for Burnaby was for a single

family dwelling in the Buckingham area, built in the 1970s. The property value decreased by $61,000, from $1,819,000 in 2013 to $1,758,000 in 2014. While multi-family, commercial and industrial properties in the region will likely see small shifts, newer developments and businesses in parts of Burnaby will see higher increases, according to the release.
