A local Burnaby business association is hopingTransLink will put the brakes on some proposed changes to transit service.

The Heights Merchants Association has come out against some of the proposed changes being considered by TransLink for the

For the last several weeks up until last Friday,TransLink had been conducting an online survey to get feedback on a number of changes to the system, including 17 in Burnaby alone.

The changes include add-

ing a B-Line bus between downtownVancouver and SFU. But the association’s executive director, Isabel Kolic, said local service would be greatly diminished, noting the proposed 135 BLine would only stop at Boundary, Gilmore,Willingdon, Holdom, Sperling and Duthie, but none of the smaller stops in between.

She said association members are concerned the Heights will no longer have a local bus service that covers all of the district, adding parents with toddlers, teens and seniors with mobility issues and others would now need to transfer buses to continue on Hastings Street if they are using local stops.

Kolic said merchants would like to see local service that covers the entire Hastings Street corridor in North Burnaby, also noting the group doesn’t oppose the B-Line as long as it doesn’t impact daily parking patterns.

She noted in the past TransLink has held open houses on transit changes and suggested some seniors and people with lower incomes may not be able to take part in the survey.

who depend on transit the most,” Kolic said.

But officials withTransLink are standing by their feedback methods.

Colleen Brennan,TransLink’s vice-president of communications, said the transit authority has found in recent years the primary method to reach the most amount of people is online.

In this case, she noted TransLink has received 12,000 responses to the survey across the region, which is a record.

She said TransLink typ-

ically gets 800 to 900 responses to a survey.

“It’s difficult to please everybody, that’s for sure, but we’re really happy with the response that we have had,” Brennan said, also noting TransLink has accommodated smaller, personal discussions about the changes to groups that have asked.

As for the proposed changes, Brennan insisted no decisions have been made and TransLink will consider the feedback from the survey.

She said TransLink is

aware proposals for the Hastings corridor have raised concerns. She said access to local shopping will be maintained but acknowledged that it may involve a transfer.

While TransLink is looking to put together a report relatively soon and move forward making recommendations before the end of the year, Brennan said the transit authority still welcomes input from the public through the customer line at 604-953-3040 or online at feedback.translink.ca.

Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan is calling on Canada’s new prime minister to halt the National Energy Board review for the Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion.

On behalf of council, Corrigan wrote Prime Minister JustinTrudeau urging him to overhaul the “inadequate National Energy Board process,” starting with Kinder Morgan’s application to twin theTrans Mountain pipeline, which ends in Burnaby.

“The overhaul we are requesting would begin with

suspension of the current Trans Mountain National Energy Board review process, as it has looming deadlines that would perpetuate the current, deeply flawed NEB process that the public and your government have already acknowledged is inadequate,” wrote Corrigan, who could not be reached for an interview. “This will ensure appropriate project review, guaranteeing that all stakeholders, First Nations and potential environmental impacts are duly represented and considered.”

Corrigan’s missive mentioned the city has stopped

filing information requests from Kinder Morgan because Burnaby has lost confidence in the NEB process itself.The mayor also urged Trudeau to develop a national energy strategy that would consider the “potential benefits” of building refineries in Canada instead of exporting raw bitumen overseas.

BothTrudeau and local Liberal MPTerry Beech have already indicated the Kinder Morgan application will not proceed as planned.

duced his new cabinet, with Manitoba MP James Carr as Minister of Natural Resources.

NEB spokesperson Craig Loewen said Natural Re-

sources Canada has been in touch with the NEB since Carr was appointed, but he wouldn’t say what was discussed.

“That I will leave for them to discuss with you,” he said.

No one from Natural Resources was available to comment.

Kinder Morgan wants to twin theTrans Mountain pipeline as part of a $5.4-billion expansion that would nearly triple shipping capacity from 300,000 barrels of oil per day to 890,000.The plan includes expanding the Burnaby Mountain tank farm and theWestridge MarineTerminal.

The NEB’s deadline for the final recommendation on the pipeline is May 20, 2016.

For most of us, the cold weather descending upon us now is an inconvenience, or an excuse to pull out a warm coat from the closet.

But for those who live on the streets, a drop in the mercury can be deadly.

Once again, the province is stepping in this year to provide 57 extreme weather shelter spaces in Burnaby during winter to help people threatened by cold, wet weather.

The temporary spaces will be available until March 31, 2016 when Burnaby issues extreme weather alerts, according to a press release from the province.

Two local churches are offering the space, with 27 spots at the Westminster Bible Chapel, 7540 Sixth St., and 30 spaces at Burnaby Alliance Church, 8611 Armstrong Ave. “When the weather turns

bad these spaces will supplement permanent services that are available year-round,” said Burnaby North MLA Richard Lee in a statement. “Everybody needs a warm and safe place to sleep, and these beds will provide an extra layer of support.”

Let us not forget the next generation Each year, the number of veterans present at Remembrance Day ceremonies dwindles just a little more.

With the end of the Second World War already 70 years past, and Korea now more than 60 years behind us, fewer and fewer of the men and women who served our country during those terrible years are still here to join the annual tribute to the fallen.

On Remembrance Day, all eyes fall on those re-

maining from their generation – and rightly so.Their sacrifices were many and their service was vital to our country.

But it’s important for us as Canadians to remember that we have not left war behind.

There’s a new, younger generation of veterans in our midst – and, far too often, their needs are going unseen and unmet.

Canadians have not been sitting silently by since the

Korean War ended in 1953.

We have sent soldiers on peacekeeping missions and into conflict zones multiple times in the decades since. Our men and women have fought – and fallen – in the Balkans, in the Persian Gulf, in Afghanistan.

And, in many cases, they have returned home in need of help that wasn’t there for them.

A recent Globe and Mail investigation found that at least 54 soldiers and veter-

Far too often, their needs are going unseen and unmet. ans had killed themselves after serving in the Afghanistan war; that number was later raised to 59.The investigation, as reported by the Globe, found a shortage of

mental health staff and support programs for returning soldiers.

The new federal government has vowed to do better.

New Veterans Affairs Minister Kent Hehr has promised to find a way to commemorate the lives of those 59 soldiers. And, even more fundamentally, the government has promised to reopen nine veterans’ affairs offices that were closed under the previous Conser-

vative government (though those offices may not be in the same locations).

The hiring of some 400 new staffers for those offices has already begun, Hehr said.

Let us hope that these steps are signs of a renewed government commitment to serve those who have served us.

On the wrong side of history

Another Remembrance Day has passed.

And as the black and white photos of my friends’ hero-relatives in military uniforms dwindle on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, I think of how much I love this country – even though I don’t have a hero of my own to share.

It’s not that my dad didn’t fight in the war or wasn’t probably decently brave for a 16-year-old.

It’s just that he fought for Germany, and even if I did have a photo of him in uniform, it would be the wrong kind to post on a Remembrance Day in Canada … or on any Remembrance Day anywhere, for that matter.

Well, this being on the wrong side of history every Nov. 11 always gets me thinking.

Having grown up hearing about the war every morning at breakfast – from my dad who was what today is called a child soldier and from my mother who was a 12-year-old refugee – I get a little worked up at how uncomplicated some of my fellow Canadians seem to think war is.

But I’m a sucker for historical photos and old people who tell stories, so I look carefully at those black and white pictures my friends post and read those stories about Canadian vets and the people they liberated, and soon I’m back on the National Film Board website watching Canadian history films.

It was the same at univer-

sity: Few “old stock” Canadians could have stayed awake for one tenth of the Canadian history courses I have under my belt.

I’m not like this because my parents shied away from their German-ness; we were German down to our liverwurst sandwiches.

But despite having once been the actual enemy Canadian soldiers fought, my parents loved this country from the day they arrived until the day they died, and they passed that love on to me and my brothers and sisters – a pack of the most patriotic Canadians you’ll ever meet.

Sometimes, when I’m unconsciously cheering Canada on during some historical account of exploration or social change or even war, I have to laugh when I remember my roots here don’t go back even one whole generation.

I think that’s the way it is for most kids from immigrant families.We don’t check our history at the door, but that doesn’t stop us from grafting ourselves wholeheartedly into this place.

With thousands of Syrian refugees set to arrive here over the next few years and with the memory of that vicious little strain of xenophobia that reared its ugly head during the recent federal election, I think that’s an important thing to remember.

Arts council pleased with gallery forum

Dear Editor I am writing to thank the Burnaby NOW for your paper’s excellent coverage of the public forum for the new art gallery presented the Burnaby Arts Council held on Nov. 3 at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts. The attendance was over 100, including City of Burnaby councillors Nick Volkow and Anne Kang, school board member Larry Hayes, and members of the parks, recreation and culture commission.

We were extremely pleased with the unanimous support expressed by the speakers who said that the current art gallery, which opened in a heritage house in 1967, no longer meets the needs of the artistic and cultural community of Burnaby.

As an example, Abbotsford built a gallery with 20,000 square feet of exhibition space, compared to the present Burnaby gallery space of 1,700 sq. ft. We also heard that a new gallery would be an important educational, cultural and tourist attraction and would provide greater resources, access and stimulation to the children of Burnaby, especially in the high school arts programs. Others pointed out that after 40 years of trying to realize the goal of a new gallery for the city, the time is now!

For your information, the Burnaby Arts Council will be making its annual report of its activities to the parks, recreation and culture commission at the commission’s next meeting on Nov. 18 at city hall. We shall also provide a brief update of the public forum and speak about our gallery plans for the future.

Time for a new vision on pipeline question Dear Editor We’ve witnessed democracy in action – the B.C. electorate have participated in the ultimate pipelines public hearing … finally.

Let those ill-conceived Enbridge, Kinder Morgan schemes become bad memories. Invite new proposals from the pipeline industry, with the terms of reference for all to see. New proposals would recognize the difficulties that come with any infrastructure plans and would need to convince the public and our leaders that the end result is a reasonable compromise, but progress we must. Resources export is vital for the Canadian economy!

Energy East pipelines system delivers more oil, four times the distance, for export and local refineries. Why do we need to disturb lands for two pipelines? One smartly designed pipeline system from Alberta to a more open ocean access port, north of Prince Rupert, could do the job.

LouK Before the 1st sediment dump I saw eight spawning chum salmon in Stoney creek behind the school and an additional four under the bridge on Beaverbrook drive. After the dump I saw four dead ones and one barely able to make it up the stream. After Saturdays dump there are no more salmon in the creek. It looks like the cities contractor has cleaned out the spawn. Why did they have to do the construction work during the spawning season? Someone in engineering is out to lunch and should be held responsible. Our city claims to be green but does not demonstrate it. This is very sad.

Gilmore development will be a good thing agentblair Gonna be great. Brentwood area including Gilmore is going to make Metrotown look like the shopping mall that it is. This will be a neighbourhood. I promise.

Life’s better here

Yes, Burnaby needs a new art gallery Rick McGowan A few years ago I was in the Metrotown Library with my daughter. I happened to overhear two adults talking, one I recognized as one of Burnaby’s “movers and shakers” who is in the enviable position of actually having the ear of the Mayor and Council. I did not wish to eavesdrop on the conversation, but it was about the arts scene in the City. “Let’s face it.

There isn’t much support for the arts here,” she lamented. I would tend to agree with this assessment.

The dream of a new art gallery has appeared to have died under the leadership of the current Mayor. According to the NOW, an art gallery was proposed in 1987 for Metrotown beside the library. My understanding is that the current administration does not see a “strong business case” for such a facility. Conversely, they are pushing the idea of an events center partly funded from the tens of millions of dollars the city receives from selling density to developers in Metrotown. Presumably with the new Weston Hotel and the Hilton in the area, an event center would be just what the developer… er… I mean “doctor” ordered.

The Metrotown Residents’ Association recently posed the question to its members, whether they preferred an art gallery or and event center.

While the majority of respondents picked an art gallery, they also told us that affordable housing should be prioritized in Metrotown over both those proposals.

But that is beside the point. My point is- art galleries are rarely moneymaking propositions, but they are an important thread in the cultural and social fabric of the community.

Robbery, auto theft on the decline in city Jeremy Deutsch

It appears to be a mixed bag of results if you’re watching the crime trends this year in Burnaby.

Burnaby’s crime stats show robberies and personal robberies continue to drop compared to 2014, according to quarterly stats provided by the RCMP, and while break and enters into businesses are also down, residential break-ins are up in three of four districts in the community.

The report from Burnaby’s top cop, RCMP Chief Supt. Dave Critchley, also noted auto thefts have dropped significantly compared to last year, but the detachment is concerned about a recent rash of theft from vehicles that involved the suspects smashing windows in several areas of the city.

Over the last month, the NOW has received several emails and calls from Burnaby residents about the vandalism, most recently in the Brentwood area.

The situation has prompted Mounties to issue a warning and offer recommendations to the public to avoid becoming a victim.

Police recommend parking in a secure and well-lit area – suggesting you’re less likely to have your car stolen or items taken from your car – and to remove possessions from your vehicle.

RCMP also noted specialized units are actively investigating the most recent rash of incidents.

A further breakdown

shows there were 159 residential break and enters across the city between July and September, compared to 165 in the same time last year.

There have been 708 reported break and enters in Burnaby so far in 2015.

There were 577 reported cases of thefts from vehicles across the city in the third quarter compared to 494 during the same period last year.

There were 128 stolen vehicles from July to September compared to 192 in the same months of 2014.

Critchley also noted the number of residential breakins tends to increase this time of year because of the shorter days when the dark streets become more hospitable to potential crooks.

He said the local detachment will establish a breakand-enter task force to target any spikes in the potential crime.

The quarterly report also pointed out some bigger cases and successes by the department.

In one case, two men were arrested and one charged with assault causing bodily harm after a Burnaby man was allegedly attacked and seriously injured while walking home on the morning of Aug. 1.

In another case, Mounties busted up a dial-a-dope operation in Burnaby following a three-month investigation.

Four suspects were arrested, including two Burnaby residents. Police seized three imitation guns, cocaine, crack cocaine, heroin, cash, cellphones and a vehicle.

Stoney Creek can still support salmon: city Jeremy Deutsch

The damage caused from a construction mishap last month along a Stoney Creek tributary doesn’t appear to be as bad as first thought.

The city has been assessing the environmental damage to the creek, and the early indication is the fish habitat will be fine.

James Lota, an assistant engineering director with the City of Burnaby, said the city received a report that found some sediment related to the construction work was transported downstream.

He indicated there were a couple places along the tributary where the sediment was high, noting crews were on scene Tuesday trying to remove as much as they could.

“It looks like the fish habitat is OK,” he told the NOW on Thursday, adding the creek is still passable

and can support spawning activity.

“The studies continue to see what we can do more in the short term and in the medium and long term to clean up, but right now it looks OK.” The city had contractors working to fix a culvert as part of the rehabilitation project this fall, when problems started.

It looks like the fish habitat is OK.

Heavy rains last month forced sediment into a tributary after a bypass pump failed and also washed out a section along Kinder Morgan’s pipeline on Gaglardi Way, leaving it exposed.

Then last week, as work was being completed, a bypass pump failure forced water to topple over the

bank and run down Ash Grove Crescent into a housing complex.The water flooded at least one garage.

The sediment issues have kept the local streamkeepers worried about the damage to the local fish habitat along the salmon-bearing stream.

Lota said the city did find dead fish in the creek, but autopsies showed they had already spawned so it would be impossible to tell whether they died of natural causes or from the rehabilitation work.

He noted the city was meeting with the local streamkeepers Thursday to provide an update on the assessment and to get their input.

As for the project, it’s near completion, but crews have reinforced some of the work to be safe with more heavy rains expected during the next few days.

“Everything is holding up as designed as it should,” Lota said.

Run honours Mountie Jeremy Deutsch

The public is being invited out to the third annual run that honours a fallen RCMP officer.

Burnaby RCMP are once again hosting and supporting the Adrian Oliver Memorial Run. The run takes place Saturday (Nov. 14) at 11 a.m. at Deer Lake Park.This year’s run will be a five- or 10-kilometre run followed by a barbecue, silent auction and 50-50 draw.

Oliver was an RCMP officer in Surrey in 2012 when he was killed in a car crash.

During that time, members of the Oliver family, including his father who

is also a member of the RCMP, were welcomed by Honour House.

Honour House in New Westminster is a place for recovery for first responders, Canadian Forces members, veterans and their families.

They can stay free of charge while visiting the Vancouver area to receive medical care and treatment.

“Those who knew Adrian, knew he loved being a Mountie not only for the excitement but because he wanted to give back and make a difference,” his dad Joe Oliver said in a statement. “I can think of no better way for Adrian’s legacy to live on than to support Honour House through his Memorial Run.”

In memory of Adrian: Officers from the Emergency Response Team suited up in full gear for last year’s Adrian Oliver Memorial Run. The run in honour of the RCMP officer who died in 2012 is taking place again this Saturday at Deer Lake Park.

Last year, about 300 people came out for the run, raising nearly $17,000 for Honour House.

In the first year, about 200 people took part in the run.

Patrick Tracy Occupation RCMP CHAPLAIN Why is he in the news?

A 59-year-old former Edmonton police officer, pastor, radio talk show host and ticketed journeyman sheet-metal mechanic is the Burnaby RCMP’s new police chaplain.

Patrick Tracy steps into the job this month, about five years after the department’s last chaplain, Cal MacLeod, vacated the volunteer post.

Born and raised in Edmonton and currently an instructor of police foundations at Discovery Community College in Surrey and a part-time security officer at Vancouver’s Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel, Tracy retired from policing in 2013 after a near-fatal, stress-related heart attack.

He is father to one son and one stepson and lives with his wife Nicole in the Lower Mainland.

The NOW caught up with Tracy recently to get his take on police life and the importance of spiritual support for people who work in a profession that’s “hard on your soul.”

What does a police chaplain do?

You do a number of things, like weddings or funerals for people within the membership. If they have a family crisis, every agency has an employee assistance program, which would be able to fix people up with therapists and counsellors, so I would be able to know who those people would be to get them in touch with the member. I can do a certain amount of counselling, but I’m not a psychologist, so I’m not going play with

I think it’s very important because it’s about support.

In the world of law enforcement, they are more and more under greater scrutiny, and there’s greater expectations placed on our police officers and they need to have support in various shapes and sizes.To have a police chaplain to help navigate through some of these thorny places is important because it’s not threatening. In the RCMP, to be a chaplain, you cannot call

yourself Reverend. Even though I am a reverend, you can’t call yourself Reverend because that would imply you’re a part of a certain faith franchise.You have to be fairly universalistic in your perspective.

What makes a good police chaplain?

Attention to detail and listening, that’s what makes a good police chaplain. Being able to be at times maybe assertive in assisting people but not aggressive.

When I say attention to detail, I may be dealing with somebody who is outside of the Christian community, who may be a Muslim, who may be an atheist, but they choose to talk to me, and I have to honour that detail

One of the reasons it is difficult to find a good institutional chaplain, whether it’s in a hospital, nursing

home or police department, is because you can’t have somebody who’s got an agenda other than being there to nurture and sustain and take care of the wellness of the members. If your agenda is conversion, then you’re not going to be a good chaplain.

Have you ever volunteered in this capacity before?

When I was a police officer with the Edmonton Police, I was actually asked three times in my career to be the chaplain. I turned them down because I joined to be a cop, but in my time with the Edmonton Police Service, I did assist in chaplaincy duties when we were without a chaplain, and I

was on the selection committee for the last two chaplains that the Edmonton Police had.

What draws you to the work?

My faith, ultimately, because I think there’s a bigger world than what we perceive there to be. I have such a passion for policing and the men and women who are in it, and what draws me to be the chaplain is that I know that this can assist them in getting home safely, in both the ultimate getting home and in the getting home at the end of every shift.

Residents in the Metrotown area of Burnaby have a new community resource thanks to the development in the neighbourhood.

Last week, the Pioneer Community Resource Centre opened its doors at 4535 Kingsway in Metrotown.

The centre is a 6,000-square-foot space that houses Burnaby Family Life and the Burnaby Hospice Society, non-profit organizations that offer family and individual counselling services and community education and parenting programs.

We are very proud of this policy.

The centre is part of the Sovereign development that includes a 45-storey mixed use highrise tower with 202 units of residential development above a 13-storey hotel, four lower floors of commercial, retail, restaurant and office spaces, and townhouses, according to a city press release.

The city is also touting the centre as one of the many community amenities since the city initiated its Community Benefit Bonus policy in the late 1990s.

The city said the policy gives developers the opportunity to add density to a building site, in exchange for contributions toward community amenities such as child-care centres, affordable housing units and nonprofit spaces.

“Our Community Benefit Bonus Policy continues to demonstrate its tremendous value to Burnaby citizens,” said Mayor Derek Corrigan in a press release. “By offering additional density to developers and concentrating development in our town centres, we both protect Burnaby’s parks, green spaces and single-family neighbourhoods and acquire funds specifically designated for the development of community amenities that enhance life for citizens in all city neighbourhoods and town centres.”

He said the policy is allowing many non-profit organizations to thrive by offering them low-cost leases while also increasing the number of child-care spaces in the city, adding park facilities, creating affordable housing and allowing for construction of civic facilities.

“We are very proud of this policy and the benefits it enables us to offer to Burnaby citizens and nonprofit organizations,” he said.

STUDENT EARNS NATIONAL NATURE AWARD A Burnaby Mountain Secondary Grade 10 student, who has made environmental films since age nine, has won a national award from the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa.

Miranda Andersen, 16, has produced numerous short videos on topics like the Mossom Creek Hatchery in Port Moody, coral conservation, deforestation, electronic waste and socalled nature deficit disorder – the latter also the topic of a TEDxKids@BC talk by Andersen in 2013.

This month she was named the youth winner of the 2015 Nature Inspiration Awards, inaugurated by the museum last year to recognize individuals, groups and organizations whose leadership, innovation and creativity connect Canadians with nature and the natural world.

The award comes with $5,000 in prize money for a project of Andersen’s choice, and she has decided to donate it to the Mossom Creek Hatchery to support nature interpretive work with kids.

“She believes that what we are doing at Mossom in-

fluenced her,” hatchery cofounder Ruth Foster said.

“She would like to see our group continue to do this work with as many young people as possible. Isn’t that great?”

SFU SCIENCE OPEN HOUSE SFU opens the doors of its Faculty of Science to the public this month.

It’s like any front-line emergency service. It’s difficult on a person because many people see and experience things that I think, for the most part, are rather unnatural for us to see.We’re not meant to see people’s blood pooling around our feet at a call or to lift somebody down from a noose that they’ve hung themselves with or to have somebody pull a weapon on us.

In my case, because of my experience, I can approach and listen to the members because I have been there.

I’m not imagining what it’s like; I’m not presuming what it’s like.What makes Patrick Tracy a good police chaplain is because Patrick Tracy has been a police officer and knows what it’s like to be chaplained well by police chaplains.

If you are so close-minded that you can’t respect the fact that other people have perspectives and journeys that they’re walking on spiritually that are real for them and that are genuine – if you can’t appreciate that, then don’t do the job.

What’s the most difficult part of the work?

I think it would be dealing with somebody who’s lost hope. If they’ve lost hope in humanity or they’ve lost hope in themselves or they’ve lost hope in the organization, I think that’s the most difficult thing to deal with.

What do you do for them?

Listen. And one of the things I’ve done in lots of counselling – it’s a little exercise I do – I simply ask them, ‘If this was your son or daughter going through this, what would you tell them?’ It’s a bit of a paradigm shift in a way, and it kind of gets people to realign a little bit.

What’s the most rewarding part of the work?

Being able to see police officers go home safely.

That’s it.The most rewarding part is being trusted by the rank and file to be part of their team.

How do you know that’s happened?

Sometimes you don’t, but you’ve done what you can.

Sometimes you know it because you talk to them the next time. Policing is just an extremely negative place to be, and I’m not talking necessarily about crime. I’m talking about the internal politics and some of the other things that go on and it can be a very negative place.

When they need me, I’ll be there: Burnaby RCMP chaplain Patrick Tracy says police officers are called to do a tough job and need support. Starting this month, he’ll be there for local Mounties and civilian staff who need a listening ear or help finding other resources. PHOTO CORNELIA NAYLOR

Your background is Christian. How do you approach conversations with people who don’t share your faith?

I have a little bit bigger picture of God than that.

There’s a prayer that goes, ‘Help me to honour who You are rather than just my idea of whoYou are.’ From a strictly Christian perspective, in the New Testament, Jesus is described as the mystery of God. Now, God’s a bit of a mystery, so when you say it double, like, here’s the mystery of the mystery, then we better be careful what kind of a nice neat little box we put Him into and how nicely we wrap it up because we might be wrong on that. So how I deal with people outside the faith is, I think that we are called – and this is an Old Testament thing – but ‘to do justice and love mercy and walk to humbly with our Creator.’ …

It’s my experience as a Christian that this has resonated best with me, so that’s what I know. It’s not like I’m going to say, ‘Well, Christianity is nothing.’ Christianity to me is profound and there are reasons why I’m a Christian, but I was asked

to be the chaplain of more than just Patrick Tracy being a Christian.

What doesn’t work when you talk to someone who doesn’t share your faith?

If your faith perspective

Did you learn that lesson first hand?

I didn’t grow up in a Christian home, and my wife’s an atheist, and I get why she’s an atheist and she gets why I’m a Christian.

I respect her journey. My world of faith and religion, I try to make it around more than just words. I watch how she lives.

How much time will this commitment take?

There’s only a basic requirement of, I think, eight or 10 hours a month, but I certainly intend on putting more into it.When they need me, I’ll be there.

It Will Not Disappoint

The appeal of Land Rover’s products is its tradition of offering “go anywhere capability” in luxury. The Range Rover Sport continues that trend while providing even more on-road refinement.

While many of its rivals look and feel largely the same, the Range Rover Sport carries an air of exclusivity and makes you feel like you have a unique product. Its main competition comes for the Audi Q7, BMW X5 and Porsche Cayenne.

This year sees the debut of the new high-performance SVR badge. The Range Rover Sport SVR is the fastest, most powerful and most dynamically focused Land Rover ever produced.

Design

While the previous Range Rover Sport was accused of not being a “proper” Range Rover, the same criticism cannot be levied at this new model.

The old Range Rover Sport was based on the significantly cheaper Land Rover Discovery; this new model however, shares the same all-aluminum architecture as the top-of-the-line Range Rover. As a result, the new Sport is 800 lbs lighter despite growing a bit bigger.

Even though it has the same bones as its big brother, the Sport looks more like its smaller sibling, the Range Rover Evoque. Overall, it looks slick, yet rugged and easily identifiable as a Land Rover.

Both the front and rear receive more contemporary styling that better lines up to the sport suffix. The blacked out pillars give it a sleek appearance and the spoiler topping the hatch hints at its potential.

The interior boasts premium materials and a tasteful design - it is simple and elegant and designers did a good job of blending modern technology with old-world class.

As most would expect, the Range Rover Sport has a commanding view over the road and other motorists. Despite its bulk, rear and side visibility is good thanks to the large windows.

Unlike the standard Range Rover, driving the Sport feels more sedan-like, thanks to the way the front seats hug and how the ride feels smooth and refined.

While being tall, the Range Rover Sport is very quiet on the move, with very little wind or road noise entering the cabin. Further aiding in that regard is the standard air suspension, which soaks up road imperfections. The setup is a little firmer than in this big Range Rover, but the Sport always remains very composed.

It never loses that composure even when it’s off-road or faced with rough weather, although most Range Rover Sport owners will spend the majority of time on paved road. The Range Rover Sport is surprisingly agile around town. Despite its heft, steering is light and responsive, although the road feedback is minimal and somewhat artificial. It’s this level of overall refinement that sets Land Rover apart from the rest.

The available engines consist of one V6 and two V8’s.

All are gasoline powered as the diesel-electric hybrid popular in Europe is not available in North America.

Most Range Rover Sport’s here will be powered by a new supercharged 3.0-litre V6 engine; it has been lightened to improve performance and efficiency and produces 340 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque.

The next step in performance is a supercharged 5.0-litre V8 which creates 510 hp and 461 lb-ft of torque to haul the Range Rover Sport to 100km/h in just 5.3 seconds.

But, if that’s still not enough, check out the new SVR model. Its tuned supercharged 5.0-litre V8 puts out 550 hp and will rocket to 100km/h in less than 5 seconds.

Given its size, it’s not surprising storage is good too. The centre console is massive, as are the door bins and glove box.

Rear seat passengers will appreciate the added legroom and space, thanks to the Range Rover Sport’s wide stance. The passengers are therefore quite comfortable when carrying three in the back - and thanks to the flat floor and sculpted centre console, the middle passenger won’t have to fight for foot space.

If you need to carry more passengers, new this year is an optional 5 + 2 seating package. This adds a powered third row with 2 additional seats. However, it is barely big enough to accommodate a small child, entry and exit is awkward, and you lose the spare.

While the Sport doesn’t have the handy split tailgate of the larger Range Rover, the power liftgate and flat cargo floor make loading and unloading items easy. The 27.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row is about as good as you can get in a sporty SUV.

Features

Ranging in price from $75,490 to $124,990, the Range Rover Sport proves that historic luxury comes at a cost.

Standard equipment includes passive keyless entry, heated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel, 2-zone climate control, heated windshield with heated washer jets, rainsensing wipers, heated power exterior mirrors, xenon headlights, front and rear camera, parking aids, intelligent start/stop system, and an 8-inch touchscreen.

Additional features, available as options or on higher trims, include memory seats, sliding panoramic roof, adaptive headlights, automatic high beams, 3-zone climate control, auto dimming interior mirror, surround camera system, and blind spot monitoring.

Fuel efficiency numbers (L/100km) for V6 models are 14.0 city, 10.5 highway and 12.4 combined. The standard V8 returns 16.6 city, 12.3 highway and 14.7 combined, whereas the tuned V8 sees 17.3 city, 12.2 highway and 15.0 combined.

Gallery hosts art fundraiser

Start your Christmas shopping early by heading over to the Burnaby Art Gallery next weekend for the second annual art sale fund-raiser.

The event features original works by established artists (John Koerner, J.C. Heywood, Sonny Assu, to name a few), as well as some family programming and an exhibition catalogue sale.There’s also the muchanticipated silent auction, with items valued between $100 and $600. Starting bids, however, will start at 50 per cent off fair market value.

“There’s definitely a lot of good sales,” said marketing and sponsorship coordina-

tor Parm Johal.

All proceeds will go towards the gallery’s new acquisition fund, money that helps buy new art.

This year’s fundraising goal, according to Johal, is around the $3,000 mark.

Part of whatever’s raised will also help fund a special 50th anniversary book, scheduled to be published in 2017.

An early-bird silent auction is being held on Nov. 19 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the gallery, located at 6344 Deer Lake Ave.The main fundraiser is on Nov. 21 between noon and 5 p.m.

Artists celebrate fall with exhibit Fall is the season of colour – and the New West Artists group proved that to be true with its fall show and sale over the weekend.

The group held its annual fall art show at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts in Burnaby on Saturday, Nov. 7.

Though the turnout may have been dampened a little by the rainy weather, that didn’t stop the artists from being enthusiastic about the chance to display their work.

The exhibition included art from multiple mediums

– watercolour and acrylic paintings, mixed media, fabric art, photography and more.

The New West Artists group welcomes visual artists of all levels, from beginning hobby artists to fulltime professionals.

It holds regular meetings and exhibitions around the area, and new members are always welcome to contact the group.

Do you remember the scene in Disney’s animated movie when Snow White runs screaming through the woods, terrorized by what appear to be evil trees? She awakens in the morning, surrounded by new furry, forest friends.

In real life, we all get lost in the wilderness of our emotions, and those emotions cloud what we are able to see.We may think we know the difference between happiness, sadness, anger and anxiety, but any of us can get caught up and lost in our moods and feelings.We are surprised with where we have wandered.

The conventional approach to life is to seek pleasure and avoid pain.That, we believe, is the definition of success and the secret to happiness: maximal pleasure and minimal pain.

We preoccupy our thoughts and energy with the pursuit of physical comforts: nice meals, a comfortable home, attractive clothes and a variety of sensual pleasures.We work not only for the necessities of life but to buy the things we crave.We peruse catalogs, search the Net and wander through shopping malls to find what we want.

At the same time, we avoid what we don’t like: pain and suffering.When we experience physical pain,

especially when it becomes chronic, we struggle to fight it – with fear, anger and sadness.This invariably amplifies our suffering.

Likewise, we seek positive emotional experiences: falling in love, happiness and peace, and we react with aversion to negative emotions, such as sadness, grief, anxiety and anger.We might try to suppress or ignore these difficult feelings or struggle to fight them with even greater fear, anger and loathing.

Our conventional approach to life is doomed to fail.That is reality.

There is good and bad in every life, and each of us will experience a daily mixture of pleasant and unpleasant experiences.

If our aspiration is to remain young, active and pain-free forever, we will surely be disappointed; our bodies age and break down, we will become ill at some time, and each of us will ultimately die. Accidents can disable us or shorten our lives.

Change – both predictable and unpredictable – is the nature of life and part of being human. It is futile to hold onto all that gives us pleasure. Pain is a part of life, but suffering – to some extent – is optional.

We don’t have to be caught up with the dramatic twists and turns of fortune or get sick on the roller coaster ride of our emotions.With a little wisdom and the application

of mindfulness, we can still find peace.

Without mindfulness, we instinctively react to circumstances and get carried away with our emotions.We stab ourselves twice by clinging to negative emotions.

First, we identify with them.We say, “I am depressed,” “I am panicky” or “I am angry” instead of “I am experiencing a feeling of depression, a panic attack or a wave of anger.” By identifying with negative emotions, we add more power to their punch and stay within their reach.

Then we ruminate – re-

peating and recycling the negative thoughts associated with those emotions. For depression, “Everything is terrible and it’s never going to get better.” For anxiety, “I can’t handle it. I’m overwhelmed.” For anger, “I have a right to be mad, and here are the reasons.”

In this way, we linger in the lake of our sorrows or get caught in the quicksand of our own anger.

A mindful approach to difficult emotions is to recognize that it is normal and human to feel a variety of emotions and to notice

them change as does everything else in our lives. I use the acronym, ROAR. Recognize your emotions.What am I feeling? Is it really anger or does something else lie beneath the surface? Fear? Sadness?

Open up and accept your feelings without judgment. Feeling a wave of anger, sadness or fear does not make you a bad person.

Appreciate whatever is arising in your heart.What does it feel like? What does it physically feel like in your body? Think “This is anger or anxiety or sadness” rath-

er than “I am angry, I am anxious, or I am sad.”

Release. Don’t identify, cling to or feed your emotional response. Let it pass through you like a weather system.

Catch and release.

Breathe in and breathe out.

That is a key to mindfully managing your emotions.

Gardening tips to keep your geraniums happy Anne Marrison GREEN SCENE

Question: My geraniums are in pots on my patio.When would it be time to bring them in? I understand they will survive the winter if kept in the garage.

– Terry Wong, South Burnaby Answer: It’s best to take your geraniums in right now.

This winter is predicted to be warmer and wetter than usual, and since you’re in South Burnaby your neighbourhood is warmer than most. But there are still times predictions go wrong.

Aside from cold, exceptionally heavy downpours could cause geraniums waterlogging problems even in pots.

Your geraniums will do much better in the garage if you can put them by a window which lets in lots of light. If it faces a direction where sun shines in (when we get sun) so much the better.

It’s best to prune the geraniums back by at least half to three-quarters and keep them fairly dry through the winter.This is about the best you can do right now at this time of year.

But you need to know, Terry, that many people find it very hard to keep large, old geranium plants inside over the winter.

For one thing, geraniums need a huge amount of light, which our winters just don’t have. Another is they tend to grow long and lanky as they reach out for light and need a second pruning.

It can also happen that they bring pests inside with them. So have a very good look as you take them in.

storage of geraniums is to take geranium cuttings in August or September and bring the cuttings in when the weather begins to get cold.

Water them just a little about once a week and when they start putting out long, soft growth cut it back by about three-quarters. As spring starts, let them grow more.

Cuttings take up less space than big, old plants, are easier to check for pests and are easier to put by a sunny window in your living space. After frost season, you can plant them outside.

Question: Chimney sweeping time again! Can I use soot and/or wood ash as garden fertilizer?

– Jeremy Greenfield, Milner Answer: Both are traditional garden fertilizers used for years with great success.We used both in England when I was growing up. But today there are a few concerns – it depends what you’ve been burning.

Wood ash is fine if you’ve been burning natural wood like prunings or split logs.

But if you’ve been burning treated timber, there would be concerns about noxious chemicals.

Since wood ash is very alkaline, it would probably be best mixed with compost or whatever natural fertilizers you might be using anyway, such as manure.

With soot, it’s really the same caution. If all you’ve been burning is plain, basic wood, then it’s fine to use it the same way you’d use wood ash. But often today, wood stoves and fireplaces are used to burn all kinds of things that otherwise would be recycled. So soot and ash with that kind of origin would be fairly suspect.

Question: I’m thinking about all the holiday parties coming up and wondering how I’ll ever fit into my little black dress.Any suggestions for slimming down this season?

Answer: The good news is that you don’t have to live with holiday love handles.

All you need is a little determination and a little forward thinking – along with some helpful advice. First, you will want to set your exercise goals.

Aim for at least 30 minutes of cardiovascular activity on most days of the week.

The key is to make realistic goals and to stick with them.

Roasted chestnuts a perfect seasonal treat Chef Dez

I can hardly believe that it was only 10 years ago that I first tried roasted chestnuts. It was on a cold winter afternoon while strolling past all of the decorative lights and stores on Robson Street.

We came across a street vendor selling these heated little goodies and decided to give them a try.They were incredible. A comforting buttery nut with a flavour uniquely their own, still encased in their shell but scored to ease the task of peeling. I couldn’t have found anything better at the time. Grasping a warm paper sack of roasted chestnuts while the crisp winter air surrounded us was reminiscent of a classic Christmas story.

As a child, I always came across chestnuts scattered on the ground amidst the fallen autumn leaves, and I never thought twice about them.

Now I have a completely different outlook. I purchase chestnuts fresh from the local supermarket when they’re in season, on a regular basis.When selecting them, choose ones that feel heavy and dense for their size and have a shiny outer brown shell that does not collapse when pushed upon.They will keep at room temperature in a cool dark area for about a week, and for approximately one month in the refrigerator in a plastic bag.

Alternatively, they can also be frozen for up to six months. Purchasing them from a reputable supplier is recommended if you are unfamiliar with chestnuts, as there is a wild variety named “horse chestnuts” that are inedible.

Preparing them for roasting is a bit tedious but well worth the effort.

While your oven is preheating to 425 F, score the brown shell with a sharp knife. Place the flat side of the chestnut down on a cutting board and cut an “x” shape carefully on the rounded side facing upwards. I find that a finetoothed serrated knife works best.

Keeping the shell on while cooking is important for holding in their warmth upon serving. Seal them with a few tablespoons of water in aluminum foil and roast for approximately 50

minutes.

Be careful of the escaping hot steam when unwrapping them and serve immediately.

Alternatively, place approximately eight of the scored chestnuts in a bowl and microwave for approximately one to one-and-a-

half minutes.The shelling process afterwards is not only made easier by cooking them but also adds to the nostalgic amusement of eating this wonderful treat.

Chestnuts are not similar to others in the nut family, as they are more perishable and their fat content is sig-

nificantly less.With only two or three grams of fat per 100 g, chestnuts weigh in far less than other nuts that may contain upwards of 30 to 70 grams of fat per 100 g.

Chestnuts also have approximately one-third of the calories of other nuts and are a much greater source of di-

etary fibre.

One of the downsides to chestnuts, however, is that their starchier content contributes to a much higher carbohydrate count compared to other nuts.

Make this wonderfully historic treat part of your holiday season this year,

and you may catch yourself humming “chestnuts roasting on an open fire …”

Bonds forged in Burnaby hockey rinks Three local families make the adjustment to Canadian life through the eyes of their hockey-loving sons

Sinan Ozgur lived in Canada for four years before returning to his native Turkey in 2004. He started a family and returned west in 2010, settling in Burnaby.

By his own admission he should’ve known the passion his adopted country had for hockey.

But his time here alone hadn’t afforded him first-hand experience of the game that’s second nature to so many Canadians.

“Just from the movies,” he said, laughing, when asked if he knew how much Canada loves its hockey.

Ozgur is now spending three days a week at a rink, thanks to his son, Kuzey. Last year Kuzey took his first turn at hockey; after seeing how much fun he had, Ozgur signed his son up for a second season.

“I just want to adapt him to Canada life,” says Ozgur. “In Turkey we play soccer all the time, not hockey, so I said, ‘Why not, he’s seven; he can play.’ I’m not expecting him to be like a professional player but at least for future reference it would be nice for him.

“Sometimes when we send him (somewhere) he complains but with hockey he never complains.”

The Burnaby Minor Hockey Association had 10 international transfers last year, including players from non-traditional hockey countries such as Georgia, Iran and China.This year it’s working on transfers for players from South Korea and Kazakhstan.

When his family moved from China in 2012, Xudong Mou encouraged his eight-year-old son Sirui to try as many sports as he liked before deciding on a favourite. Sirui has just started his second season of hockey.

“He had learned skating before but he had no experience with hockey,” said Mou. “I still remember the first time Sirui played. He hardly touched the puck the entire game, but I always applauded when he did.”

“We now know all the rules, and watching the game is the best fun for us,” said Moghaddam.

That’s saying a lot considering the position Sadra has taken a liking to.

“When he started skating, he had to try and control himself on the ice,” she recalled. “He improved very fast. In his first game he was the goalie and he was good. His wish is to be a goalie in the NHL.” Whether it was a desire to help acclimatize to Canadian culture or to simply follow their friends that drew these kids to the rink, it’s the game itself that’s keeping them there.

“He likes hockey because he doesn’t have to do the same thing all the time,” said Ozgur. “That’s the most important thing for him.

Ozgur, Mou and Moghaddam are happy their sons have found a new sport to play, not only for how it’s helped them assimilate into a new culture and given them an active outlet, but also for how it’s brought more intangible benefits.

“Kuzey learns, I guess, real life from there,” said Ozgur. “He socializes with the kids there, too – that’s the most important thing for us.”

“Putting Sirui in hockey has been one of the best decisions we’ve ever made,” said Mou. “Hockey has enhanced his teamwork, spirit and agility, and we really enjoy watching his hockey games now.”

The Burnaby Central Wildcats are back at the Show.

The AAA senior boys soccer team locked up a berth to the provincial championships with a 1-0 victory over West Vancouver on Tuesday, avoiding an elimination game on Wednesday in the process.

The Burnaby-New West league cham-

pions, who were recently ranked No. 1 in B.C., now can focus on bringing their best to the championship tournament, which runs Nov. 26 to 28 at Burnaby Lake Complex. “(West Van) is a very strong team in a strong North Shore league, so that we played so well and had an edge throughout the game, was a great sign,” remarked assistant coach Anto Steko.

and winning battles during the first half, it wasn’t until nearly the whistle when Stefan Cuk put the Wildcats in front. He took a nifty cross from Nathan Graziano and slotted it to the far post to make it 1-0 at half.

“It was very big because we missed so many good chances (in the first half),” said Steko. “We were hovering, hovering for that goal but you know how it is if you don’t put it away -- it can come back and bite you.”

While West Van pushed forward for a good part of the second half, Burnaby Central maintained its cool and didn’t allow more than a few passes beyond the 18-yard mark.

“They didn’t get to penetrate at all; our defence was extremely strong,” said Steko.

“What this did is give us real confidence moving forward.We kind of have a better idea of how we fit with the better teams.”

STM’s Steele nets defensive award Seven members of the St. Thomas More Knights senior football program were named as AAA Eastern Counference allstars this week, led by Defensive MVP Ben Steele.

Steele, at 6-foot-3 and 210 pounds, posted fifth-best 41 tackles and five quarterback sacks over six games this season.

Joining him with an all-star honour are fellow linemen Demarius Henderson (defensive), Nico Cesaerei (offensive) and Phil Lemp.

Luca Bellini, who registered 692 yards and averaged 115.33 per game was one of two running backs chosen to the lineup.The all-purpose back also scored seven majors on the ground, with an average of 8.44 yards per carry.

Defensively, linebacker Landon Jackson and defensive back Matt Smigel were also among those 23 all-stars named.
