BCA decides in secret who is going to run, and win, chair and vice-chair positions

Elections at the Burnaby Citizens Association-dominated school board didn’t run as smoothly as usual Monday night. Every year, the board is required by provincial legislation to elect (or re-elect) a chair, vicechair, and representatives to the B.C. School Trustees Association (BCSTA) and B.C. Public School Employers’ Association (BCPSEA). For years, only one candidate has been nominated for each position, and the annual event is usually a brisk, well-oiled procedure for the Burnaby board, which has been made up entirely of BCA members for eight years. This time, however, secondterm trustee Meiling Chia threw her colleagues a curve. Trustee Larry Hayes had nominated chair Ron Burton to serve another term in the top spot, but Chia then nominated trustee Gary Wong. Wong appeared to be taken aback and declined the nomination, and Burton was acclaimed chair for a third consecutive oneyear term. Chia then asked the new chair

A handful of First Nations, non-governmental agencies and cities – including Burnaby – will appeal the federal cabinet’s approval of the proposed Trans Mountain expansion project next week. Mayor Derek Corrigan told the NOW the city must submit its documents to the Federal Court of Appeal before Christmas. “(It’s) a very short time period for appeal, 15 days I think, so it doesn’t give us much time to get ready for it,” he said. “Again, it continues the process we’ve been committed to, exhausting the legal remedies that are available to us and making sure we do everything we can within the legal framework to defend our interests.” Corrigan said the city plans to stick to the arguments it has made in the past, including the “failure of the process.” “I think all of us were extremely dissatisfied with the way the process and with the way the process was conducted, and the things the process refused to look at, and those kinds of flaws, I think, are going to be very important to draw to the attention of the court,” he added. The city will also argue that the National Energy Board (NEB) did not properly consider alternative routes and failed to hold oral cross-examination. Rather than oral cross-examination, the NEB allowed intervenors to submit information requests, which gave Kinder Morgan an Continued on page 8

Newsnow TODDLERS AND TEENS MISSING OUT
Christmas Bureau needs more toys Bureau has received fewer donations than last year
By Tereza Verenca
tverenca@burnabynow.com
With Christmas just around the corner, the Burnaby Christmas Bureau is in need of toys for teens and toddlers. Stephen D’Souza, executive director of Burnaby Community Services, told the NOW toy donations are down by 25 per cent this year, specifically in those two categories. “I think maybe we’re a victim of our own marketing,” he said. “We talk a lot about how we get a lot of items for the toddlers, and this year, it seems really down. I think people have been getting the message … but maybe we spread that message too wide.” D’Souza added people are really drawn to buying for babies and don’t necessarily think of the one- to three-year-old age group. “They think of the fiveyear-olds, and toys start getting really fun; they start looking at some of the movies that are out, so I think
people really think about those ages a lot more,” he said. As for cash donations, D’Souza noted $71,000 has been raised so far.The goal is to reach $120,000. He said there are still a few major donations to come in, including Metropolis at Metrotown’s photos with Santa program, which brought in more than $51,000 for the bureau last year. The mall is looking to raise $55,000 this season. Given the decrease in toy donations, staff will be using some of the cash donations to beef up the toy room, D’Souza said. So far, 750 families have registered for the Christmas Bureau toy room (on par with last year), which officially opened its doors on Dec. 14. “It’s been a bit of a crazy morning as it’s always been on the first day,” said D’Souza. “We’ve also had the added issues around the weather as well; families who weren’t able to get in to register are coming in now to register. We’re trying to get everyone in as quickly as we can, but it’s going well.” The executive director added it’s the “little drives” that make the Christmas Bureau happen – everything

ty who are giving what they can,” he said. Children and families aren’t the only ones being helped by the Christmas Bureau. The bureau’s seniors’ sponsorship program is looking to help 250 seniors by the end of the year (there are currently 225 registered), by matching them
with donors who are willing to buy requested food and gifts for Christmas. “We know that number is only a fraction of those who need it, and so we’re really trying to continue to use our networks,” said D’Souza. In 2015, the bureau helped 3,574 people, in-
cluding 1,931 children, 106 seniors and 33 individuals who were homeless or at risk of homelessness. To donate, stop by the bureau’s toy room from now until Dec. 23, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. It’s at 7252 Kingsway.
HOMELESS IN BURNABY
Lack of permanent shelter ‘deplorable’ By Jeremy Deutsch
jdeutsch@burnabynow.com
While winter’s icy grip over the Lower Mainland will ease up slightly in the coming days, the most recent and future cold weather predicted for the season is a concern for the folks who work with the city’s most vulnerable. Wanda Mulholland, the coordinator of the Society to End Homelessness in Burnaby, said her organization is worried for the lives of homeless people in the city at this time of year. “I am concerned about someone trying to survive in this kind of weather,” she told the NOW. “Even the most resourceful of people are very challenged to be outside in this kind of weather.”
At various points during the week, the temperatures have dipped to near -10 C in the evenings in some areas. Mulholland noted there are some new homeless people in Burnaby, and the weather can be particularly hard on for them if they’re not used to being outside. Burnaby is one of the only Metro Vancouver municipalities without a permanent homeless shelter. However, when it gets this cold, Burnaby’s extreme weather shelter opens up. This year, the primary site is the Westminster Bible Chapel, 7540 6th St. It’s an opportunity for someone to get a meal and get out of the cold for an evening in some pretty basic conditions. The extreme weather shelter, which has
30 beds, is run by the Lookout Society and funded by B.C. Housing. Lookout’s executive director Shayne Williams noted in Burnaby, the shelter has been open 15 days so far this season, with a total of 80 stays. But he also pointed out the majority of homeless people in Burnaby are getting services in other communities, like New Westminster and Surrey. And Williams is critical of the city’s stance on a permanent homeless shelter, adding not having a year-round shelter has been a challenge. He argued the situation makes Burnaby citizens more vulnerable and less connected to the ongoing supports and family close by, because they’re forced to leave and access
services somewhere else. He also added the situation is putting extra pressure on neighbouring communities. “The need is certainly there, and the fact the municipality isn’t coming forward is deplorable, particularly this time of year,” Williams said. “To see so many people suffering on the street and having to go to other communities… if you’re a vulnerable citizen that becomes homeless in Burnaby, you have to leave your home community and that’s really sad.” Lookout’s executive director also suggested the ability for homeless in Burnaby to get healthy and housed longterm is “seriously compromised” because there are no resources in their home community where their chances to nav-
igate the system are much higher. The debate over a homeless shelter in Burnaby is nothing new. Mayor Derek Corrigan has repeatedly said he doesn’t want a permanent homeless shelter in the city, and when asked by the NOW again this week, he hadn’t changed his stance. “That never works, and never worked before. When you provide an overnight shelter and throw them back out on the streets, you don’t do anything except continue a dysfunctional situation,” he said, adding the provincial government needs to address the issues that are keeping people on the streets. “You need to have facilities that are going to give people the treatment that
they require and transition them into some kind of permanent housing.” He also took a swipe at the groups operating shelters in other communities, suggesting organizations like Lookout make a living off shelters, while the problem of homelessness isn’t getting better. “They don’t end up doing anything to stop the homelessness; they seem to perpetuate it,” he said. “Until you start seriously addressing the fundamental issues of poverty, it’s not going to change the situation one iota.” Last year, the province’s housing minister Rich Coleman told the NOW there’s money “on the table” for a homeless shelter in Continued on page 8

‘It’s been a long tradition of operating like this’
Continued from page 1 permission to comment on the election. “As long as it’s nothing personal,” Burton said. In her comment, Chia made reference to an “unofficial agreement” and “transparency to the public” in relation to the election, but Burton quickly kiboshed any explanation. “That agreement is not a part of the public board,” he said. “That’s within the summer caucus, so I’m going to rule you out of order and move on.” Chia later told the NOW she had planned to voice frustration at the way the election had been conducted. For the five years Chia has been a trustee, she said BCA trustees have met privately before the December elections and predetermined who would be elected to each position. In her second year, Chia said it was explained to her there was a kind of unofficial agreement that trustees would be elected to the chair and vice-chair posi-
tions for two consecutive years, and the vice-chair would then rotate into the chair’s position. “Ron mentioned that it’s a healthy rotation to offer the new people who are interested to be taking the next step,” Chia said. “He said we just want to give new trustees a good opportunity to step in if they have

the passion or interest to explore the position, which is a good reason – a rotation, not people stay in the chair for four years.” At a private meeting Sunday, however, the same trustees who had argued to keep the two-year term rotation four years ago chose to ignore it, Chia said. So, on Monday, Burton was acclaimed to serve
a third consecutive year as chair, and outgoing vicechair Harman Pandher was replaced by trustee Baljinder Narang instead of being rotated into the top spot. With municipal elections now less than two years away, Chia suggested some trustees are flouting the precedent because of political aspirations and infighting among board members. “This has to be public,” Chia said. “To me, that’s too selfish. How can you be a trustee if you only make a decision for your own benefit?” Burton, however, said he has “no future aspirations.” He said the reason Pandher was passed over was because the board is getting ready to engage the provincial government on a number of important issues involving the B.C.Teachers’ Federation and the courts, and Pandher is a Surrey public school teacher. “There was a feeling that having a teacher at the front of it would be a bit of a conflict,” Burton said. “It had

nothing to do with his performance or anything like that. It was just, we didn’t want the board to be in conflict. “She is a new trustee and I don’t think she fully understands the process,” he said. Burton made no apologies for how the BCA board has conducted the annual elections. “It’s been a long tradition of operating like this, and I think it’s served the board well over the years,” he said.

New Edmonds ice rink moving forward Jeremy Deutsch
jdeutsch@burnabynow.com
A new ice arena in Edmonds is one step closer to reality after council gave the nod to a feasibility and schematic design study of the project. On Monday, council awarded the project to HCMA Architecture + Design, which will start work on the study in the coming weeks. The plan is to build a twin arena facility at a site at 10th Avenue and 18th Street in the Edmonds area. The city had looked at a few other locations, but eventually settled on the site, in part because of the expected growth in the area. Council was quick to praise the project and its location. Coun. Sav Dhaliwal suggested South Burnaby residents have been patiently waiting for ice in their community, adding there are a fair amount of users looking
for extra ice. “It’s long overdue, these two sheets will serve the growing population both in Metrotown as well as the Edmonds area,” he said. There are currently three city-owned rinks in Burnaby: Bill Copeland Sports Centre, Burnaby Lake Arena and Kensington Arena. Bill Copeland was the last city arena to be built, back in 1997. Dhaliwal said the new rink will also allow the city to take down and plan something new for the Burnaby Lake rink in the future. It was a sentiment echoed by Mayor Derek Corrigan, who noted, with the addition of two new rinks, the city will be OK to rebuild the Burnaby Lake arena. “Part of what we’re trying to do is to continue to service people in the community while we’re rehabilitating infrastructure that’s reached beyond its useful age,” he said.
Meanwhile, the city has put aside $250,000 to fund the feasibility study, with part of that budget going into geotechnical and environmental assessments. Updates on the study will be reported through the city financial management committee. The city has put aside $22 million out of the 2017/18 capital budget to construct the new facility and is proposing to use the community benefit fund that comes from development. User groups like the Burnaby Minor Hockey Association have said there is growing demand for ice time and they are maxed out in terms of accommodating the number of players and offering reasonable ice times to entice new members.

Opinion now OUR VIEW
Why do we give, and why don’t we?
Do people donate to charities because they were raised to believe that one helps the needy? Do some donate because they themselves were raised poor and know what it’s like to have nothing and then have a neighbour or stranger give them something that not only nourishes their body but also their spirit? Do others give to charity because they read in the newspaper what a huge difference one person’s thoughtful gift can mean
to someone else and their family? Do others give simply because they have so many blessings that they want to share in their good fortune? We don’t know the answer, of course, but we do know that if it wasn’t for folks who think of others in need, this world would be a much colder place. On page 3 of today’s paper, we have two stories that speak of needs not met. The Burnaby Christmas Bureau is down in certain
toy donations this year, and that’s not a good thing. The bureau is this city’s go-to charity for many things, and it may also be a telling barometer for generosity in the city. The second story is about the homeless in the city. We’ve written umpteen editorials on this subject before. The city under Mayor Derek Corrigan’s leadership is ideologically opposed to providing a permanent homeless shelter in Burnaby.
We get his reasoning. If other levels of government don’t pull their weight on these kinds of problems, why should cities shoulder the burden? It’s a fair argument, but it doesn’t keep homeless people warm. Burnaby’s neighbour, New Westminster, also believes that other governments haven’t met their responsibilities. But that doesn’t stop them from doing the right thing and trying to help the homeless.
A recent study by the Fraser Institute called Generosity in Canada and the United States:The 2016 Generosity Index, measures donations to registered charities claimed on personal income tax returns. The study finds Canadians have sunk to a 10-year low in giving, according to tax returns. And, compared to Americans, we give less. Now, the U.S. may allow for a broader range of declarable donations, but it’s still not a good sign.
Whether the “haves” simply feel that they don’t have enough to share with the “have-nots” or whether the “haves” simply don’t bother giving is a moot point. When we give to others, it’s not just for them. It’s for us as well. Our lives don’t get better with more stuff; they get better when we see the good that we can do in our neighbourhoods, our communities, our cities – and the world.
MY VIEW STUDENT UNIONS
Students oppose pipeline project
We, the undersigned student societies representing over 220,000 students from across British Columbia, are deeply disappointed in the federal government’s decision to approve the Kinder Morgan pipeline. The decision ignores the opposition of First Nations, represents a reckless endangerment of the fragile environment and economy of the Salish Sea, and fails to take responsibility over Canada’s climate change emissions, thus ignoring the dangers of climate change. The current government has spoken of a renewed relationship with the First Nations in Canada. This decision railroads the opposition of many First Nations, continuing a history of paternalistic colonial attitudes. It is vital the government of Canada follow through on the commitment Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has made about a new relationship; approving this pipeline is not a new relationship. The Kinder Morgan pipeline will bring about a six-fold expansion in oil tanker traffic in the Salish Sea, passing through the Burrard Inlet, under the Lions Gate Bridge, around Stanley Park and through waters inhabited by one of the most diverse and treasured ecosystems in the world. The threat of a spill, and as we have recently seen, the complete failure of spill response, place our treasured environment at a risk that we believe is too great to justify. One major spill would result in disaster to the environment, irrepa-
rably harm our tourism industry and destroy our fishing and wildlife industries. For economic and environmental reasons, this pipeline should not be approved. Lastly, the world is severely threatened by accelerating climate change. This pipeline represents an expansion to fossil fuel emissions that will fatally harm Canada’s ability to live up to our Paris climate emissions targets, and thus fail to live up to our collective responsibility to leave a planet that is still habitable for future generations. As students, we are the youth of today, and we demand better from our government – not just for the environment, but for the future that we must live in. We are frustrated and angry that the federal government has so thoroughly ignored the needs of British Columbia, and we continue to stand in opposition to the development of the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain pipeline. Asbestos at city hall
After years of working with the Workers Compensation Board to just keep a lid on the problem, city council decided in December it needed to deal once and for all with asbestos in the ceiling at city hall. Insulation there was found to contain five to 20 per cent asbestos fibre. Since continuing to keep the harmful substance sealed in was not seen as a viable long-term solution, council approved $1 million to have it removed – a process that was expected to take up to two years of weekend work.

Bus cutbacks hurt seniors in the Heights
MP breaks silence on pipeline approval
Dear Editor I love snow. But this year more than any other I am keenly aware of the extreme limitations it places on our elderly. Now, thanks to cuts from TransLink, those living along the Hastings corridor will be denied access to bus service as an alternative to vehicles. This is because the new “B” line express, lauded as a more efficient ride to SFU, will cut off local bus service all along Hastings in Burnaby. TransLink actually claims that the “alternative” buses are the 144 (which hits Hastings at Duthie and goes up to SFU) and the 129, which runs on Hastings from Gilmore to Holdom (every 16 minutes if you are lucky). Meanwhile the only regular and reliable bus on Hastings is no longer available to our elderly population, as access will require a walk of several more blocks. My favourite spin? TransLink claims that the 14 is an alternative. The 14 stops at Kootenay Loop and provides local service for Vancouver, where the current 135 was always an express bus. We need a decent transit system if we want people to get out of their cars. Creating an express bus, without adding a local bus, is a cut in service. Tell the truth. A bus that doesn’t come to Burnaby is not a solution in Burnaby. Of course, HandyDart should be the real alternative for our elderly, but contracting out has, as usual, led to a deterioration of service. Don’t think the few blocks matter? I challenge you to walk today on Hastings, three to five blocks further. Imagine being terrified of falling on the ice, breaking a hip or having some other injury that will steal your independence. Let’s exercise our compassion and find ways to fight for a decent transit system – both improved HandyDart and local bus service. Let’s start by holding our politicians to account. Karen Dean, Burnaby
We need the province to stop the pipeline Dear Editor With the federal government’s approval of the Kinder Morgan pipeline, it has never been more important to have a premier and a government that will stand up for B.C. and defend our coast. This issue is of critical importance to the safety of local residents in Burnaby. The number of oil tankers in our community will increase from five to 34 per month, approximately one million barrels per day, which is an increased environmental risk that will have a major impact on our schools, businesses and wildlife. Since the announcement, many of my neighbours in Burnaby have shared with me their disappointment to see our Premier Christy Clark simply hand over British Columbian’s say to the federal government’s flawed process. As a candidate in the upcoming election, I’ll be fighting alongside B.C. NDP leader John Horgan to stop the expansion. This is a crucial time for us to work together to make it clear that we need a government that will put local residents’ needs and best interests first. Katrina Chen, B.C. NDP candidate, BurnabyLougheed
Joey B “Consent” is not required. The national interest of these projects is determined by the National Energy Board after viewing the evidence in full and making that determination and recommendation to Parliament. But “consent” is not required. Pretty simple concept. Mayor Corrigan is a clown. The Green party was the only party completely against the pipeline... Since only about 5% of the electorate voted Green, it should not be a surprise that they did not get their way. BurnabyResident bill smith WE had to vote to get Harper and is henchmen out first. Once we have proportional representation and my vote ACTUALLY counts then I will vote exclusively Green. AS it is now, any vote for other than the (two?) mainstream parties is wasted. bb49 BurnabyResident Voting to get someone out was your first mistake. You always vote to get the right person in. Your second mistake is asking get for proportional representation. Do you really think it will give us better politician? No, but it will give us more of them.

We take nothing with us. Help us have a decent, healthy and happy life here on Earth. What other riches do we really need? Merry Christmas!
Assessments set to jump in Burnaby Keith So again we have Burnaby City Council blaming the Province for issues that Council can directly address. Burnaby has the option to take a three year average of property value for tax purposes. This averaging would provide some much needed relief to home owners. But instead, all we get is more lip service and finger pointing from the BCA. None of this helps citizens of Burnaby afford to pay their property taxes.

City now Mayor confident project can be stopped Continued from page 1 opportunity to respond in writing. “By saying OK, what’s the best route or what are the implications of this to the harbour, those kind of places are where the NEB shuts itself off from making any consideration, and those are crucial issues to be discussed,” said Corrigan. He expects the legal battles between opposed First Nations groups and Kinder Morgan to be “front and centre.” In June, the Federal
Court of Appeal ruled the federal government under the Harper Conservatives did not adequately consult with First Nations groups when it came to the Enbridge’s Northern Gateway pipeline. The Liberal cabinet rejected Northern Gateway on Nov. 29, the same day Trans Mountain was approved. Corrigan said he’s “relatively confident” Kinder Morgan could face the same fate. “It’s very difficult to stop
the federal government from doing what it wants to do,” he said. “But this process has been so fundamentally flawed that they’ve made themselves vulnerable. … I think there may be an inclination on the part of the court to say this hasn’t been a process that has addressed the issues.” Aboriginal support for the project is “strong and growing,” according to Trans Mountain. Fifty-one aboriginal communities have signed Mutual Benefit Agreements (12
new signees since the announcement), which will bring more than $400 million to those communities. The 51 agreements (10 in Alberta and 41 in B.C.) include all of the First Nations whose reserves the pipeline crosses and around 80 per cent of communities close to the pipeline rightof-way. “Together with these communities, we worked very hard to establish a relationship built upon respect, trust and openness,” said Ian Anderson, president of
Kinder Morgan Canada, in a press release. “These MBAs represent not only an agreement to share opportunity and provide prosperity, but a symbol of recognition of a shared respect.” Trans Mountain spokesperson Ali Hounsell told the NOW the company will not be commenting on the city’s appeal until it’s filed next week. The NEB, meanwhile, said it can’t provide a statement on the city’s claims because the matter is before the courts.
Another legal battle The City of Burnaby was in the B.C. Court of Appeal on Dec. 8 to argue a ruling that favoured Kinder Morgan. Burnaby’s case challenges whether federal jurisdiction for major projects, like pipelines, can overrule city laws. The city’s lawyer, Greg McDade, is optimistic the decision will come down in the city’s favour because of a recent Supreme Court of Canada ruling in Windsor, Ont. The Burnaby decision was reserved and a judgment won’t be made for a couple of months.
Running a shelter not in city’s mandate: Corrigan
Continued from page 3 Burnaby, but the province needed a “willing partner.” Corrigan said he would support any solution that allows people to transition out of homeless status into permanent housing and treatment. When asked what role he sees the city having in such
a facility, he explained the municipality would run the public process to make sure the community is minimally impacted, while potentially using money raised through amenity bonuses to reduce costs to the facility, or offering up land. Corrigan said operating a facility is not within the
city’s mandate and couldn’t be done without significantly changing the bureaucracy at city hall and costing taxpayers a lot of money. The mayor does see a glimmer of hope in getting through to the province with the recently established Metro Vancouver regional homeless task
force. The task force, which is made up of Metro Vancouver municipalities, including Burnaby, was set up in an attempt to identify solutions to address the growing number of tent cities and homelessness across the region. Corrigan said he hopes all the cities coming togeth-
er will make this an issue in the next provincial election. With an election next spring, both Burnaby’s mayor and Williams argue homelessness needs to be an issue for voters next year. In the meantime, the Society to End Homelessness in Burnaby continues to provide outreach to
homeless in the city and could use some help by way of donations for items like clothing. Anyone wishing to donate can do so by dropping off items at the Southeast community policing office during office house at 7191 Arcola Way.

R ROTARY ROTARY CLUB OF BURNABY DEER LAKE presents presents
Ten-year-old reaches out for kids in need Tereza Verenca
tverenca@burnabynow.com
When 10-year-old Aidan Fitterer heard his mom telling his little brother to eat everything on his plate because there are less fortunate kids out there, he couldn’t sleep that night. “It bugged him,” his mother Miriam said of the conversation three weeks ago. “He said, ‘Mom, I want to do something,’ so I challenged him. I said, ‘OK, how do you want to help?’” That’s when Fitterer decided to organize a toy drive in support of the Burnaby Christmas Bureau and some Montecito families in need. “I wanted to do it because people in my own community might not have anything to open this Christmas,” he told the NOW. He connected with Heather Kimmie, the principal at Montecito Elementary, to see if she would collect toys through the office. Soon after, the Grade 5 student made a presentation to his peers (some 260plus kids) and wrote a PA announcement, a daily reminder to his classmates to donate. Closer to home, Fitterer and his family handed out flyers around his neighbourhood, letting people know they’d be coming around on Dec. 10 to collect toys.

Man fined for risky train ride There’s risky behavior, and then there’s what a few people have tried recently on a SkyTrain. Last week, a man from Chilliwack was handed hundreds of dollars in fines from Transit Police for riding on the outside of a SkyTrain in Burnaby. Just after midnight on Dec. 9, the man was seen riding on the coupler head between eastbound SkyTrain vehicles, as the train pulled into the Royal Oak station, according to a re-
lease by Transit Police. The man apparently jumped onto the platform at Royal Oak and boarded the next eastbound train.Transit Police officers caught up with the train at 22nd Street station in New West and detained the “slightly intoxicated” man for questioning. He told police he was celebrating his 20th birthday. The man was given a $115 ticket for riding on the outside of the train and a fare infraction notice for no paid fare, which is $173. He
was also warned about the extreme danger of his actions and sent on his way. Transit Police note the incident is similar to one that occurred on Dec. 4, at approximately 1:20 a.m., when a SkyTrain attendant told police that an incoming train to Stadium Station had two outside riders on it. Eventually, transit police officers caught up with the two teenaged boys, aged 13 and 14. No tickets were issued. – Jeremy Deutsch

Candice Brown
Occupation TOY STORE OWNER Why is she in the news? At 28 years old, Candice Brown has done something many people spend their lives dreaming about – she started her own business. Brown recently opened the doors to the Candy Apple Toy Company at 4415 Hastings St. The Burnaby resident hopes the store will be a welcomed alternative to big-box toy stores, and she plans on carrying unconventional toys not often found on the shelves of mainstream stores. “I also wanted a store that disconnected from the electronics. So back to traditional play – board games and education games, wooden toys, and things you can’t find mainstream. So I do have
Tell me about your toy store, Candy Apple Toy Company? Well, I wanted to create a store that was different than Toys “R” Us. I wanted something people remembered. I remember watching Mr. Magorium’sWonder Emporium and I loved the idea of it being an experience, being more than just a toy store; having kids come in and watching wonder light up their eyes, and parents saying, “I have to bring my kids back here.” Describe the store. Are there play areas for kids?
mainstream things, but also things that people come in and they’re like, ‘Oh that’s cool, I haven’t seen that before,’” she said, adding her family played a huge role in helping her turn her dream into a reality. Curious about what her new shop offers? You can check out her website at www. candyappletoycompany. com and search toys by age, type or price. Or you can call the store at 604-563-0882. The NOW caught up with Brown before her big opening to find out more about the Heights shop and why she wanted to open a toy store. – Cayley Dobie
KIDS’ STUFF Candice Brown recently opened Candy Apple Toy Company in the Heights. She hopes the store, located at 4415 Hastings St., will be a welcomed alternative to big-box retailers. PHOTO JENNIFER GAUTHIER So I’m actually waiting to get my reading tree set up. It’s a custom-built tree that goes from floor to ceiling and in that area, it’s going to be a free-play area. So I have a train set set up, and I want to pull toys from my inventory so kids can try them out, sit down and play and have a good time at the store while the parents shop. On top of that, I also offer free coffee so the parents can have something to sip while they’re walking around looking at stuff. I also have the free giftwrap, which I always love. A big feature at my store, which I personally like, is the price you see, is the price you pay. The taxes are already included on the sticker price, so what you see, that’s ex-
actly what you’re going to pay. There’s no hidden taxes that pop out at you. If it says $35 it’s $35; it’s not $35 plus tax, which is something I really like. Why did you want to open a toy store? I actually went to school for business and the funny thing is is when I was in school they would ask, “Who wants to open their own business?” I always said, “No way, that’s so much work and so much commitment. I could never do that.” And then I finished school and I started working in the human resources profession, and found that it was good, I really enjoyed it, but it wasn’t really fulfilling
me, and I’ve had this idea for several years and then in August, everything in my life kind of lined up and I was like, “OK, I’m taking the plunge, I’m quitting my job, I’m going to go full force into,” and I haven’t looked back yet. If you don’t mind me asking, how old are you? I’m 28. I turned 28 in September. Wow, you’re pretty young. Do you have kids of your own? No, I actually don’t. I have some nieces and nephews I always loved doing all the parent-stuff with, so I think this is a great way to interact with some kids and bring them some joy.
Have you talked to people about the store? What’s been their reaction? It’s actually been really interesting. I’ve been getting a lot of shipments come in, and I have this one courier where, yesterday the store was finally set up and every time he would go to the truck and bring a box and then peek his head and try and look at the toys and be like, “Oh, this looks really interesting. You have some interesting stuff.” So even during his professional life he found that he wanted to actually walk around the store. Even my mom, she’s been a big help, she’s been helping set up the store, and she would open a box and it
would be like Christmas to her. She’d be like, “Oh this is so cute,” and “Oh, this is so cool,” and so far it’s been like that with everyone so it’s really, really big encouragement. So you’ve been to business school, what does success look like to you? What is your goal? My goal down the road would be to have this location and open up another. I think it would be really great to branch out. I keep telling everyone – because some people are worried, they’re a little freaked out, and they say, “You could fail,” and I tell them I’m young enough, that if I fail I can bounce back, and I told Continued on page 18

ask me any questions or if they’re like, “I really like this product, have you thought about this?” I’m open to any encouragement, any recommendations, that sort of stuff. Even ideas like, “Oh, you know what would make this a really great place for my kid is if you had this for him to play with,” that type of thing. I love getting to know the community and making it important to them.

I’m walking around the store right now. … I love the Worry Eaters. They’re these little stuffed guys and they’ve got a zipper mouth, and they’re for kids, and what they do is they hold on to your worries for you. So you open his mouth and you either write down or draw your worry and put it inside him, and he’ll hold on to it so you don’t have to worry about it.
Of all the toys you carry in the store, what’s your favourite? Oh my favourite toy, I

So I have my artwork that’s up on the walls is done by a local artist who lives in Kits, and she goes to craft fairs and that sort of thing, and what I’m working on is working with local charities and community partners to bring their product in so I can support the local business (community).

Paramedic students at the Justice Institute of B.C. will be better prepared to handle calls involving babies and kids, thanks to a donation from Burnaby-based G&F Financial. The financial group donated $6,000 to the Justice Institute to buy specialized pediatric and neo-natal training equipment. The equipment will simulate pediatric emergencies to help train paramedic students for child-related calls, which are rare, “reiterating the importance of regularly refreshing knowledge of anatomy, professional competence and life-saving treatment,” read a press release from the Justice Institute. PRANK INSPIRES DONATIONS If you see a bright pink Honda Ridgeline driving around Burnaby, you have the folks at Traction on De-
mand to thank for that. While Chris Peacock, vice-president of marketing and alliances, was away on vacation, employees at the software sales company decided it would be fun to paint his black truck a bright shade of bubblegum pink. Upon his return, he was shocked, of course, but he decided to turn the prank into a challenge for his team. For every $50 donation to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, Peacock will drive his pink truck for another day, read an email from Karen Glanzberg at Traction on Demand. So far, Peacock has received $14,000 in donations and will spend 280 days in his pink truck. To donate, go to www. breastprankever.com. Donations help fund orphanage, education
Armour-Godbolt said she’s been amazed at her friend’s commitment, enthusiasm and patience over the years. “The fact that she’s in it for the long term really inspires me. If we are turned down for a grant, she says, ‘Well that wasn’t meant to be but we’ll try somewhere else,’” the Burnaby resident said. To donate to the orphanage, visit www.shilohplace. ca (donations are eligible for a tax-deductible receipt). Payment can be made in the form of cheque or with a credit card through Pay Pal. Make cheques payable to Umoja Operation Compassion Society; write on the memo line if it is for a Shiloh Place student sponsorship, the building fund, or the well, and mail to Shiloh Place c/o #211 – 615 North Rd., Coquitlam, B.C.,V3J 1P1.
