The fate of two Burnaby Citizens Association (BCA) municipal seats is up in the air after Tuesday’s provincial election. While uncertainty still reigns about the overall outcome of the vote, it’s clear Coun. Anne Kang and school board trustee Katrina Chen are headed to the B.C. legislature as NDP MLAs for Burnaby-Deer Lake and BurnabyLougheed, respectively. That leaves the all-BCA city council and school board with decisions to make. Only provincial cabinet ministers are actually barred from holding office in other areas, according to Burnaby school district secretary-treasurer Russell Horswill, but Chen is unlikely to remain an active member of the board. “I don’t think it’s her intention to have both jobs,” Horswill told Continued on page 8

Search called off for missing member of family

Police have called off the search for a missing 36-year-old Burnaby woman whose husband and four-year-old son were found dead Tuesday. Ming Dong Xu, 38, his
wife,Yu Ling Zhang, 36, and their four-year-old son, Garrick were reported missing on Monday. An investigation led to Mitchell Island in Richmond where Xu worked, according to Burnaby RCMP, and police found their submerged car near

the island on Tuesday. The RCMP underwater recovery team pulled the car out and found Garrick’s body inside, while Xu’s body was located nearby. Police then searched along the banks of the Fraser River in Richmond
for Zhang, but called off the operation by Thursday. “There’s tide; there’s river current. The chance of locating her is very slim,” Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Daniela Panesar told the NOW. Police have notified the port authority, she said, in

the event Zhang’s body is found by boaters or anyone else on or by the river. Foul play isn’t suspected, according to police, but the investigation, including a mechanical inspection of the vehicle, is ongoing. The family was last seen
at about 3 p.m. on Sunday and was reported missing when they didn’t return home as expected. Anyone who has information about the incident is asked to call RCMP at 604-294-7922 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222TIPS (8477).
