The fate of two Burnaby Citizens Association (BCA) municipal seats is up in the air after Tuesday’s provincial election.

While uncertainty still reigns about the overall outcome of the vote, it’s clear Coun. Anne Kang and school board trustee Katrina Chen are headed to the B.C. legislature as NDP MLAs for Burnaby-Deer Lake and BurnabyLougheed, respectively.

That leaves the all-BCA city council and school board with decisions to make.

Only provincial cabinet ministers are actually barred from holding office in other areas, according to Burnaby school district secretary-treasurer Russell Horswill, but Chen is unlikely to remain an active member of the board.

“I don’t think it’s her intention to have both jobs,” Horswill told Continued on page 8

Search called off for missing member of family

Police have called off the search for a missing 36-year-old Burnaby woman whose husband and four-year-old son were found dead Tuesday.

Ming Dong Xu, 38, his

wife,Yu Ling Zhang, 36, and their four-year-old son, Garrick were reported missing on Monday.

An investigation led to Mitchell Island in Richmond where Xu worked, according to Burnaby RCMP, and police found their submerged car near

The RCMP underwater recovery team pulled the car out and found Garrick’s body inside, while Xu’s body was located nearby.

Police then searched along the banks of the Fraser River in Richmond

for Zhang, but called off the operation by Thursday.

“There’s tide; there’s river current. The chance of locating her is very slim,” Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Daniela Panesar told the NOW. Police have notified the port authority, she said, in

the event Zhang’s body is found by boaters or anyone else on or by the river.

Foul play isn’t suspected, according to police, but the investigation, including a mechanical inspection of the vehicle, is ongoing.

The family was last seen

at about 3 p.m. on Sunday and was reported missing when they didn’t return home as expected.

It’s a refrain that voters heard repeatedly leading up to the election, not just in Burnaby but across B.C.: If you want to get rid of the B.C. Liberals, you’d better vote NDP. New Democrat supporters pounded the pavement to get the message out that a vote for the Greens would be, in essence, a vote for Christy Clark’s Liberals.

All four Burnaby ridings were envisioned to be tight, two-way races between the NDP and the Liberals –

I was scratching my head half the night with the Green candidates in each riding positioned to play potential “spoiler” for the NDP and pave the way for Liberal victories.

But now that election night has come and gone with a New Democrat sweep, it seems clear that the Green effect played differently than predicted.

In Burnaby, all four of the city’s B.C. Green Party candidates raised their party’s share of the popular vote over 2013: Peter Hallschmid from 7 to 11.75 per cent in Burnaby North;Valentine Wu from 8.74 to 13.61 per cent in Burnaby-Edmonds; Joe Keithley from 8.23 to 13.76 per cent in Burnaby-Lougheed and Rick McGowan from 8.39 to 11.87 per cent in Burnaby-Deer

Lake. But here’s the catch: at the same time, NDP support in three of the four ridings didn’t drop. In fact, Raj Chouhan in Burnaby-Edmonds, Janet Routledge in Burnaby North and Katrina Chen in Burnaby-Lougheed saw the NDP’s share of the vote rise on Tuesday night.

“I was scratching my head half the night trying to figure out who the Greens were going to damage the most,” said Lindsay Meredith, a professor emeritus in Simon Fraser University’s Beedie School of Business and an expert in political strategy and marketing, in an interview onWednesday morning.

Like many other pundits and election-watchers, Meredith’s initial prediction was that a Green surge would damage the NDP – which, he says, he does believe was the case onVancouver Island.

“If the Greens hadn’t been as successful as they were, we’d probably have an NDP government today,” Meredith said.

But he said the picture becomes far more complicated outside ofVancouver Island and in ridings like Burnaby’s, with traditional NDP bases, where the Greens managed to raise their popular vote without noticeably affecting New Democrat results.

“That’s where I say we’re getting some weird new behaviours,” Meredith said.

“That’s the part that’s got me shaking my head.”

decreased in all four ridings.

In part, Meredith said, the Green surge comes from the fact that voters were engaging in what he calls “voter revenge games” – similar in vein to the voting that led to Brexit, to the election of Donald Trump in the U.S. and to the rise (although not the eventual election) of the far-right Marine Le Pen in France.

“It was a dissatisfac-

tion; not voting for who you want, but voting against who you dislike,” he said.

What it boils down to, he said, is that people voted NDP because they were dissatisfied with the Liberals, and they voted Green because they were dissatisfied with the NDP. But Meredith said many New Democrats in Burnaby’s ridings – a city with an older demographic – were

among the hard-core voters who were unlikely to turn.

“Those older NDP voters tend to be very loyal animals,” he said.

Meredith said the “dissatisfied” voters who made the difference to the Greens – especially in places like Burnaby and NewWestminster, with older populations – may in fact have come from the Liberal camp.

tive, the Liberals failed on one major front with older voters: health care. He said the Liberals should have paid more attention to the fact that health care was far and away the front-running concern for voters, especially those in that coveted older demographic that’s statistically more likely to vote.

What happened to the other half of voters?

More than half of voters in two Burnaby ridings stayed home from the polls on election day – and turnout wasn’t a whole lot higher in the other two ridings, according to preliminary numbers from Elections B.C. Burnaby is covered by

four provincial ridings: Burnaby-Deer Lake, Burnaby-Edmonds, Burnaby North and BurnabyLougheed.

Burnaby-Deer Lake had the poorest voter turnout in the city, sitting at 48.4 per cent. Burnaby-Edmonds came in at 49 per cent,

with Burnaby North at 53.5 per cent and BurnabyLougheed at 56 per cent.

All the numbers are fairly similar to voter turnout in the previous provincial election in 2013, with only Burnaby North showing a slight drop (from 55 per cent).

Those preliminary numbers don’t provide the total picture, since those counts do not include absentee ballots and they do not account for voters who registered at the polls.

“The final turnout figure in these districts could vary significantly,” cautioned

Elections B.C. spokesman Andrew Watson.

But, based on the initial picture, it looks like Burnaby’s voter turnout was slightly lower than the province at large.

In total, some 57 per cent of B.C. voters – or, to be exact, 1,798,430 of the

3,156,991 registered voters – actually cast a ballot on May 9.

How exactly Burnaby’s votes broke down throughout the city is not yet known. Poll-by-poll analyses are expected to be published by Elections B.C. by mid-June.

“I think that was purely a revenge vote,” he said.

Meredith said the NDP likely suffered some backlash on the health-care front, too, faulting Horgan’s campaign for not making it a more central issue.

“It would have been the easiest harpoon to throw,” he said.

But, he said, most of the backlash likely hurt the Liberals and benefited the Greens.

The single outlier in Burnaby was the riding of Burnaby-Deer Lake, which did go handily to Anne Kang with 47.33 per cent of the vote to Liberal challenger KarenWang’s 36.35 per cent.

But Kang was the only New Democrat whose share of the popular vote actually decreased slightly from 2013, when it sat at 48.48.

Meredith said he’s not surprised Burnaby-Deer Lake was the exception.

“Burnaby-Deer Lake is also rich as hell,” he said,

noting that the well-heeled aren’t typically NDP voters.

“You would have a tough job as the NDP making a good sell.”

McGowan, who challenged the riding for the Greens, sees another factor in the NDP’s outcome: the controversy over the ongoing demolition of affordable housing in Metrotown – a controversy that has dogged Kang, as a member of Burnaby city council.

“I think it was not a good idea for them to run a city councillor who was partially responsible for demovictions in the Metrotown area,” McGowan said, noting he will be curious to see the poll-by-poll breakdowns to see where the New Democrat support may have fallen. He speculates some of the drop may have come in the Maywood area, at the heart of the demoviction issue. (Poll-specific breakdowns won’t be published

by Elections B.C. until midJune.)

McGowan said the decrease in support for the NDP and the growth for the Greens makes it clear the

fight over housing isn’t over.

“It’s not an endorsement to the Metrotown plan,” he said. “We plan to fight on against the Metrotown plan update.”

He said the rise of the Greens speaks to a growing “malaise” among B.C. voters with the status quo alternatives.

That part, at least, is an assessment that won’t get any argument from Meredith.The professor, in the final analysis, sees Green support coming from two camps: the true, die-hard Greens (“those who really are tree-huggers, who recycle religiously, eat kale”) and those who were part of what he sees as that “global revenge vote” – the “I just want to kick over the pot for the sake of kicking it over” voter.

The increase in Green popularity in B.C. – from 8.15 per cent of the vote in 2013 to 16.75 per cent this year – was, he says, the outcome of the spoiler effect.

“It turns out the Greens may be the funny magic mushroom that pops up,” he said.

Do Greens hold the key to B.C.’s future?

The election is over – well at least in Burnaby.

It will be a couple of weeks before the final provincial tally is in – and, of course, there may be challenges and recounts as well.

At press time on Thursday it was Liberals 43, NDP 41 and Greens 3.

But that could change.

With the province being virtually split, the Greens will play an instrumental role in terms of policy and

legislation in the future.

Will Andrew Weaver be a model of principled politics and use his party’s votes to support Green policies, or will he use them as strategic chess pieces in a power struggle? Can he put what appeared to be personal differences between he and John Horgan behind him?

Or will he succumb to the age-old game of ‘let’s see what I can get out of this for myself.’ Of course, pundits are already saying the

Liberals won’t last long in any scenario, but no one should underestimate Christy Clark. She has shown incredible skill as a tough-as-nails campaigner and party leader. She has not held on to her position by singing kumbaya in caucus meetings. She has had to be pretty cold-blooded to survive and keep her party in line. Remember, she won the Liberal party leadership with a lone supporter, former Burna-

by MLA Harry Bloy. She was not one of the boys, and she has learned the hard way how to hang on to what she has worked to acquire.With a big majority prior to this election, she could pretty much drive her own agenda at whatever speed she wanted. And she did, but can she handle the more delicate machinations of a split legislature with a Green party wagging its finger at her? Can she abide two ‘mansplain-

ers’ lecturing her? Can she be patient and strategic?

Can she accept that there will be a need for deals to be done that may upset her loyal supporters but could earn her new ones in the process? Will she survive this test? So far, she’s saying all the right things. But actually doing it will require a lot of restraint.

Jonina Campbell, the Green candidate in New Westminster told our sister paper the Record there are

certain things the Greens will not waver on. Campbell said: “We have two deal breakers: proportional representation/electoral reform and campaign financing reform.”

A new electoral system is something the NDP agrees with – but Clark has shown no appetite for. Can she pivot and agree with the Greens to block potential Green-NDP alliances?

Only time will tell.

The perennial problem of polls When the most important public opinion poll of all – the general election – teeters toward an uncertain conclusion, it’s no wonder that the polls conducted during a campaign don’t always reveal the mood of the electorate.

The result of the Tuesday election will not be known for a couple of weeks.We will need to wait for any recounts to be completed and absentee ballots – the ones cast in a riding other than the one the voter lives in – to be tallied.

As the votes were counted after the polls closed, there were clear winners in some ridings.They had leads that were so large, there is no chance of a recount, and there will not be enough absentee ballots to make a difference. In many other ridings, things were not quite so clear, and as a result, the total seat count was in doubt at midnight.When the final count is complete, which party will be in power?Who will be the premier?

There were many questions remaining in this, the closest election we have seen in many decades.

Some of the polls done in the past couple of weeks hinted at this sort of outcome: a race too close to call. Others said the New Democrats were in the lead.

At first glance, it appears the provincewide polls this time were more accurate than the ones done in 2013, which must go down in history as one of the worst B.C. campaigns for pollsters. No poll taken in the two months

before the 2013 vote could predict the strong performance of the B.C. Liberals. Some came close – the Times Colonist poll was the second-best of the 20 major polls done that year – but all polls had the New Democrats in front.

This time around, the Times Colonist chose to poll only four electoral districts: Saanich North and Islands, where three candidates who nearly tied in 2013 were staging a rematch, as well as threeVancouver Island ridings where incumbents were retiring.

The calls were made last week, and the Times Colonist reported the results in the Saturday and Sunday editions.

So how did they do?

One poll said EsquimaltMetchosin would go to the NDP. It got that right.

One poll said Saanich North was too close to call.

The Greens argued that their own polling had them well in front.Throughout the count on Tuesday, the Greens held the lead.We were wrong.

One poll said Cowichan Valley would likely go Liberal, with an NDP win possible.That one went Green.

One poll said CourtenayComox would go Liberal, no question.That one went NDP. By my count – although a pollster might disagree – that was one out of four. As the editor, I’m discouraged.

As the one who pays the bills, I want a refund.

Newspapers mean well.

Plight of the pitiful pigeon An unlucky pigeon found itself the centre of a Metrotown neighbourhood’s attention in March.The hapless bird had become entangled with B.C. Hydro powerlines. Opinionnow Think housing, not trail Dear Editor: The spring Info Burnaby newsletter published a full-page spread on the merits of a proposed linear park running along the east side of Willingdon Avenue between Hastings Street and the Brentwood mall. A multi-use trail is envisioned to accommodate cyclists, pedestrians and joggers. One can imagine the conflict that will occur between this group of users!

It is also proposed that seating and “gathering” areas be developed along this linear parkway – all adjacent to one of the busiest vehicular corridors in North Burnaby. One questions the safety of pedestrians, especially children, unless a formidable fence is installed.

Mayor Derek Corrigan has indicated this project will be funded by community benefit funds, as provided by building developers, hence there will be no cost to taxpayers. Nevertheless, it should be pointed out that for many years the City of Burnaby has spent a considerable amount of taxpayers’ money, purchasing many properties along the aforesaid route, with a view to accommodating rapid transit. Rapid transit along this route, being no longer considered a priority, has opened the door for the proposed linear parkway. Further, the cost of rental accommodation is also beyond the reach of the unfortunate low-income earners.

Economical housing situated at the southeast corner of Confederation Park would be an ideal proposal for the east side of Willingdon Avenue.

Election campaigns back then were summer affairs, and the Pacific National Exhibition brought people together.What better place, then, to conduct a poll that’s not a poll?

Hungry fairgoers at a hamburger stand owned by John Dys were given their choice: In 1972, for example, they could have a Bennettburger, a Barrettburger or an Andersonburger.They were identical, except one bore the name of Social Credit leaderW.A.C. Bennett, another was named for NDP leader Dave Barrett, and the third was named for Liberal leader David Anderson.

The Barrettburgers were by far the most popular, and the election results on Aug. 30 agreed with the burger sellers.

Those burgers were great, by the way – tasting much better than crow, which is what many pollsters should be eating.

She could resign, triggering a byelection, or take an unpaid leave of absence until Jan. 1, 2018, at which time a byelection would no longer be required under the Local Government Act. The second option would save the cost of a byelection but deprive the board of a trustee until the next municipal election in October 2018. City staff wouldn’t comment on the situation, and calls on the subject to Mayor Derek Corrigan were not returned by press time,

but the same legislation applies to municipal councils.

Chen told the NOW she will be going back to the board for discussions before deciding her next move.

“We really haven’t talked about the details yet,” she said.

Kang expressed similar sentiments.

“At this point, I haven’t thought about it yet,” she said. “It’s really too early to talk about that. I will talk to mayor and council to see what happens. But in the meantime, I will continue with my duties until a decision has been made.”

When asked whether it would be better for the board to pay for a byelection or to operate with one

fewer trustee, Chen said she would do what she felt was best for the board and school district.

“Again, it’s based on the best interest of the board, but we have a very strong board,” she said. “We work really well together, the trustees, the management.

We have a great relationship with each one of us, so I have every confidence that our board will continue to

do good work.”

Former civic candidate and Metrotown Residents Association founder Rick McGowan, who ran unsuccessfully in Burnaby-Deer Lake for the B.C. Greens in Tuesday’s election, said a byelection could open a window on city hall, especially ahead of decisions like the approval of the Metrotown development plan update, which is expected

in June.

“I’m still committed to fighting the Metrotown update, and having a voice on council would be helpful,” McGowan told the NOW. “Being in the room when they’re in their in camera meetings would be somewhat helpful to understand what happens, because no one knows. It’s a big secret. I don’t know if one councillor can change anything, but we

have to have better information coming out of city hall.”

A byelection might be the best shot for a non-BCA candidate to win a seat on council or the school board, according to McGowan, and local Greens will get together to discuss the potential vacancies.

“It’s a good opportunity for somebody who’s not part of the BCA to get elected,” he said.

Even though final results from B.C.’s election won’t be announced for a couple more weeks, a Simon Fraser University professor is weighing in on what a minority government would look like.

Lindsay Meredith, part of SFU’s Beedie School of Business and an expert in political strategy and mar-

keting, called B.C. Green Party leader Andrew Weaver the “kingmaker” should the current 43-41-3 seat distribution stand between the Liberals, NDP and Greens, respectively.

With three seats in the legislature, the Greens hold the balance of power.

So what will Weaver do with that power?

“He can either play a short game and roll with the minority government, or he

can play a long game and form a coalition,” said Meredith.

If the former happens, the chances of a minority government lasting are slim, with most of them failing within 18 months, he noted.

“Coalitions, I don’t think they can last a whole hell of a lot longer either. ... If he forms a coalition and it comes off the tracks downstream, he’ll get blamed for being part of it,” explained

Meredith. “If he plays the short game, he doesn’t have the stability of a coalition, but he does have this huge clout and bargaining power where he can hold the gun to both the NDP and the Liberals and say, ‘You know, it’s a good idea if you make me happy. Because if you don’t, I’m going to screw you up.’”

One contentious issue among the parties has been B.C.’s energy projects, including the proposed Kinder Morgan pipeline, scheduled to begin construction this September.The B.C.

Liberals have said the company has met their five conditions for “the path to yes.”

The Greens have opposed the project, while the NDP has teeter-tottered but has said it’s against it.

on that and go along with them (the Liberals), that’s not going to help Weaver all that much,” said Meredith, suggesting going against his anti-pipeline voters’ beliefs would not help him at the polls next time.

The SFU prof noted with a minority government, Weaver (or Horgan) could “make a big production” on the Kinder Morgan file and ask for more studies to be conducted, looking at such things like the Water Act or Haida Gwaii issues.

memorable, she says, for showing her how people can share the same family history and yet come out of it with completely different stories.

The whole process has left her with the realization that women rarely have a real chance to discuss their mothering journeys.

“We talk about the little hassles, and sometimes the big challenges, with our friends, with other mothers, … but we don’t ever talk about our big journey,” Emily says. “When you really give someone the stage for a full hour, almost everybody comes to some kind of conclusion.”

Most women, she says, realize that they are trying to be as good a mother as their own mother was – or, in many cases, that they’re trying to be a better mother than the one they grew

up with.

“There’s this feeling of trying to improve through the generations,” she says.

She admits that the process of being interviewed is “almost traumatic” for many women, likening it to an in-depth counselling session.

“Our memories of our own being mothered are often buried, but they inform everything about our lives,” she says. “Nobody has a perfect life. Nobody has the most perfect experience of being a mother.”

In the end, Emily chooses anywhere from five to 20 minutes of the interviews to include as audio with her exhibition, playing alongside the portrait of the woman in question. She paints the portraits from photos of the women, always looking for something expressive that reflects that individ-

ual woman’s journey. Her painting style changes from portrait to portrait, she says, with some being more descriptive and others created in a much looser style.

The MAMA Project installation has been seen in a variety of locations along

As in previous incarnations, Emily plans for her Deer Lake installation to include both indoor and outdoor portions; for the outdoor portraits – hung on lines with clothespins – Emily uses words painted on

She loves the immersiveness of the experience in having viewers walk through the sheets, holding on to them to read the words and to study the life-size portraits.

“It’s interactively fabulous to have them on the sheets,” she says, noting the sheets are full of stains, tears and rips that speak to their own histories. “It’s really tactile.”

Reaction to her installation caught her by surprise.

While Emily thought mothers would be the ones most affected by the exhibition, in fact the opposite has been true.

“I think we’ve shelved, because we need to, the how and why we’re mothering.

We don’t really think about our own histories that way,” she said.

“Older men are by far the most affected,” she says.

“They have seen their wives go through it and their children go through it, but they don’t have any cultural way of processing it.”

Those affected by the exhibition and moved to share their own stories are invited to write in a book that travels with the installation where viewers have recorded their thoughts, in words and pictures – running the gamut from sweet and funny contributions from children, to tear-filled farewells and bitter reminiscences of loss and dysfunction.

MOTORCYCLE SAFETY SKILLS CHALLENGE

WHAT IS IT? The Burnaby RCMP’s third annual Motorcycle Safety Skills Challenge, where specially trained motorcycle officers will be on hand to answer questions about how to ride more safely. They will share the most upto-date information on the latest motorcycle laws, including details on learner and new motorcycle licences. Officers will also be on hand to conduct motorcycle safety inspections to help identify common defects that could compromise road safety.

WHO IS ORGANIZING IT? The event is hosted by the Burnaby RCMP. “It will be a unique opportunity for the public to train like we train, and I encourage motorcyclists to take the challenge,” Burnaby Chief Supt.

The B.C. SPCA will bid farewell to one of its longest serving employees at the end of May. Ryan Voutilainen, branch manager of the Burnaby shelter, is leaving after 20 years with the non-profit. Starting May 29, he’ll be the new manager of the Delta Community Animal Shelter.

“It was a very difficult decision, and I’m leaving with mixed emotions,” he told the NOW. “It was an excellent opportunity to get a different perspective in the animal welfare and sheltering field.”

Voutilainen started with the B.C. SPCA as an animal

control officer in 1997 at the age of 19. At the time, he was studying meteorology at Simon Fraser University.

“A family member said I should apply. I decided I would take casual work while I was going to school, and I found that I really had a passion for animals as well as people,” he said.

The now-39-year-old started at the Coquitlam branch and would go on to work at every single branch in the Lower Mainland. He was also part of the animal cruelty investigations team for seven years.

“It was definitely a rewarding part of my career to be able to help out those animals in our community. Because our goal, always, as the SPCA, is to stop ani-

Asked what he’ll miss most about the charity and his job,Voutilainen said it’ll be the people.

“There’s such an amazing group of people here at the branch and in the organization as a whole. It’s defi-

nitely going to be a very big change seeing as I’ve essentially grown up here.”

For the most part, he said his new gig will be similar to his old one.The only difference is that he’ll be working for a municipally run facility.

“Back in the ’50s and ’60s, animals weren’t being

cared for properly in municipally run facilities; however, things have completely changed over the past 10, 15 years,” said Voutilainen.

“Municipalities that have been doing their own animal control have actually come up to the same standards the B.C. SPCA has strived for.”

It appears the harsh winter didn’t completely wipe out the fish population in Stoney Creek.

In January, the NOW reported local streamkeepers were worried about the effect road salt would have on salmon eggs after some creeks were experiencing higher-than-normal salt levels as a result of snow removal.

An experiment done a few years ago showed eggs exposed to excess salt could cause higher mortality rates and deformities, according to John Templeton, chair of the Stoney Creek environment committee.

But on April 17,Templeton spotted some coho fry.

“I was surprised,” he said. “The winter’s been the worst winter I’ve ever been through.”

A tributary located where SFU’s old salt shed used to be was a major concern, added Templeton. Even though the shed was moved, the ground remains contaminated, he said.

“When it gets dry and the water of volume is less, the concentration goes up.

Honestly, it’s a miracle we have fish in that tributary. … There’s actually six of them in there,”Templeton told the NOW.

Less than five years ago, Surrey’s Innovation Boulevard was simply a big-ideas concept that innovators were eager to implement. The group behind the partnership knew they shared common objectives such as growing companies within the healthcare technology and services sectors and implementing solutions for the healthcare system as a whole. It wasn’t long before their unified vision became a high-tech reality transforming Surrey’s Whalley area, and encompassing more than two dozen different companies, health research institutions and universities.

On Saturday, May 13, volunteers will be releasing fry into Stoney Creek during the annual Great Salmon Send-Off.The familyfriendly event is open to all ages.

It’s happening between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at 2740 Beaverbrook Cres. (at the north end of the Stoney Creek Community School grounds, near Lougheed Town Centre). Come early, though, while supplies last.

There will be environmental displays, activities for the kids and live entertainment.

Payne’s most recent article focused on the medical product Opthalight, which is dedicated to developing mobile eye examination tools that perform digital eye examinations and more. In his article, he explains the product addresses the need eye specialists have for an “easy-to-use portable device that can give a quantitative measurement, save the data for comparisons, and that did not disrupt normal workflow.” The product designers already have preorders and are working toward manufacturing their first small run of the product.

Vikings build momentum with district win By defeating NewWestminster in the district final, Burnaby North gets in good form for provincials

It isn’t how you get there, some say, but just arriving is the important thing.

Either way, the Burnaby North senior girls soccer team are showing that their automatic berth to the provincial AAA championships isn’t being taken for granted.

The Vikings demonstrated that their ticket as hosts is also valid as

true competitors, following a wellplayed 3-1 victory over the New Westminster Hyacks in the district final on Tuesday.

“The girls came to play in the playoffs as they were playing for pride, and also to show that they deserve to be in the provincials,” Burnaby North coach Deborah Peters said.

In a season where only three of nine schools fielded teams and a handful of games was decided by

forfeits, the final turned on a couple of well-struck shots by Burnaby’s Michaela Filippelli in the first half. She opened the scoring before the game was 10 minutes old by finishing off a corner kick.

New West’s Christine Singh tied it three minutes later on an impressive blast to the top corner from a tight angle. But Filippelli restored the lead by capitalizing on a broken play.Wrapping up the offence was the Vikings’ Kaylee

Malli, late in the first half. “(Burnaby) North was the better team in the first half, and we were better in the second, but we just didn’t have enough to finish it,” remarked New West coach Wayne McCarthy.

New West was without on-field leader Nisa Reehal, a Grade 10 forward, due to a nagging injury. But the contest mirrored the teams’ previous encounter. In the season opener, Burnaby North

was without the services of Filippelli, who suffered a broken nose while anchoring the squad’s strong showing at a UBC tournament.

“Our veteran players stepped up and played with heart and determination for their last league banner game,” said Peters. “Every girl came to play. They played as a team, selflessly and for each other.”

The gap between when he saw his name called and when his phone rang – with an Alberta area code on the other end – seemed like a split second, if that.

By the time he answered the call, Felix Gacusana Jr. was already over the moon.

The Burnaby native and St.Thomas More Collegiate alumnus was drafted by the Calgary Stampeders on Sunday, the 43rd name called.

“I was originally going to go pitch-andputt with my girlfriend, just to take my mind off (the draft),” Gacusana told the NOW. “But I decided to stay home with my family.

“My girlfriend saw my name on her phone and was freaking out, everyone was yelling.

Right when I saw my name the phone rang.”

The Simon Fraser University offensive lineman had, in the weeks prior to the draft, including the draft combine in April, talked with every other team in the Canadian Football League – every team but Calgary.

That made the draft selection all the more interesting for Gacusana.

“I didn’t get any interest from Calgary, not at the combine where I had interviews with Saskatchewan,Winnipeg and Toronto,” he noted. “Before the draft I got calls from Hamilton, Montreal,Toronto and B.C., but nothing from Calgary.

“I was so surprised to hear them draft me, but you never know.”

A second team all-star in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference with SFU despite an 0-8 record, Gacusana was one of a handful of Clan players to draw draft interest.

In the fourth round, Calgary grabbed fellow SFU grad and friend Ante MilanovichLitre, a running back.

One round later, they called the six-foottwo, 315-pound lineman’s name. Pretty cool considering Gacusana didn’t pick up the sport until Grade 10 in high school.

Now he’s gearing up for Calgary’s camp, which begins May 24.

“I want to show them, that while I’m probably the shortest lineman, you can’t find any lineman who loves it more than me,” he said. “I love to play, I love contact, everything about it.”

Rovers ready for Swangard debut

Burnaby’s Premier Development League squad looks to chalk up first win With two games under their belts, the TSS Rovers will be battling butterflies of a different kind tonight (Friday, 7 p.m.) when they host Lane United at Swangard Stadium.

The first-year franchise in the Premier Development League (PDL) hopes to entertain and inspire the soccer fans in attendance, and show they are a competitive lot.

The Rovers launched the season last weekend in a pair of games in Alberta, dropping both sides to Calgary Foothills FC by scores of 4-3 and 2-0.

In the opener,TSS showed a lot of energy and jump in staking out a 3-1 lead at halftime.

Daniel Davidson registered the first goal in club history just two minutes into the game off a header.

He would draw an assist on James MacMillan’s marker at the 23rd-minute mark, and KristianYli-Hietanen upped the lead to 3-0 with just three minutes left in the half.

Both Davidson and MacMillan are part of a small but key core of veterans with PDL experience, as members of the

now-defunct Kitsap club.

But Calgary, the defending Western Conference champions, had a response just before halftime when SFU striker Adam Jones counted his first of two.

In the second half, the Foothills’ experience began to pay dividends, as they swamped the Rovers and pulled it even with 10 minutes remaining in the contest.

In injury time, former Vancouver Whitecap residency player Ali Musse struck for the game winner.

TSS netminder Andrew Hicks made five saves on the day, while Calgary’s Dylon Powley turned aside six shots.

With a depleted lineup, having lost former SFU captain Ryan Dhillon from its midfield due to an injury, the club fell 2-0 on Sunday.

Following tonight’s game, the team will prepare for a road test Tuesday against the Portland Timbers u23s.

Their next home date is May 19 when they will attempt to avenge the opening loss against Calgary.

It was a main target all year, and now that it’s accomplished, the goal has just gotten bigger – and sweeter.

The Burnaby District Metro Soccer under-13 boys Wave 2 completed their first mission – that of winning the Coastal Cup crown, with a 2-0 shutout over Fraser Valley last week.

A patient, strategic performance helped keep the boys on course, even after falling to 10 players upon losing a forward early in the game due to a red card.

“The boys just played an incredible game, they were very focused,” recalled coach Rino Consiglio.

The squad, making the most of the transition to an 11-v-11 year and playing on the big pitch, scored early and looked in fine form against their old rival – with whom they had played twice during the season, winning 1-0 and losing 2-1.

But when striker Tiago Coimbra received a red card minutes after giving the Wave a 1-0 lead off a penalty kick, for bumping into Fraser Valley’s goalkeeper, things got interesting.

“The boys weren’t rattled, they just hunkered down.

We got to talk with them at halftime, about staying the course,” said the coach.

“They were pretty evenkeeled through the whole thing.”

Upping the lead was Mateus Bussanich, whose one-timer provided a soft cushion in which the defence protected.

The victory earned the Wave a ticket to the provincial A Cup championships in July.

With the team comprised primarily of players from Wesburn and Cliff Avenue, there was some familiarity in which to build upon. But the coaches took it upon themselves prior to the start of the season to speed up the chemistry and confidence with a training camp.

“We held a sort of minicamp in August at Burnaby Central, just our team, and worked on things during the week,” Consiglio said. “The key was they got to bond and work on everything together.”

They finished atop the u13 boys division with an 11-0-2 record; Burnaby’s lone losses came at the hands of Port Moody and Fraser Valley.

Any obstacles they faced were cleared smoothly, thanks to an eagerness and commitment the players brought to each and every day at the pitch.

“They came in and were well prepared,” added Consiglio. “They just wanted to learn, and came committed to the program and every practice.”

They began the Coastal Cup march with a 3-0 win over West Coast in the round of 14, and a 4-1 decision over Central City.

In the semifinal, Coimbra scored four times in their 5-0 shutout over Surrey.

KOUWENHOVEN, Dirk A. May 21, 1942 − April 25, 2017 It is with love and deep sadness we say farewell to Dirk A. Kouwenhoven (Dick), who was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, and a cherished friend and mentor to many.

Hailing from the historic city of Delft in the Netherlands, Dick was the ninth child in a vibrant family of 12. Born during World War II in German−occupied Holland, Dick often recalled the joyful celebrations in the streets of Delft following the liberation on May 5, 1945. Dick’s father, a second−generation carpenter, maintained a busy workshop at the back of the family home, which was an endless source of fascination for Dick and his siblings. The hand−crafted wooden windows and doors his father produced would inspire Dick’s pursuit in another craft, as a type compositor and printer. Working as an apprentice at a local print shop while attending technical school in nearby Rotterdam, Dick began a long and successful career in the printing industry.

At the urging of his younger brother John, the two brothers decided to immigrate to Canada in January of 1965, joining their older siblings Simon, Frank and Bill. Dick and John traveled by train from Montreal to Vancouver seeing for the first time the scale and beauty of their new country and the adventure and opportunity it offered. In Vancouver, Dick found employment as a typesetter at a local printing company and six months later, he found himself handling production at a small two−person print shop called Hemlock Printers.

In early 1966, Dick met the love of his life, Klaaske (Clara), who was visiting her older sister and brother, also Dutch immigrants to Canada. They married in December of 1967, with daughter Vanessa born in 1969 and son Richard born in 1972. Dick’s near 50−year career at the helm of Hemlock Printers officially began in the summer of 1968 after he purchased and incorporated the company. In the early 1970’s, Dick was joined by brother and business partner John, followed by brothers Bill and Frits who, along with other dedicated staff, laid the foundation for a thriving and continually evolving printing business.

Dick had a dedication to quality, to ’doing things right’ with pride and care, and to respect and support everyone he worked with. He navigated Hemlock through generations of technological change and turbulent economic times, while always looking ahead and maintaining his principles of respect and integrity. The successful business, which thrives to this day, is a testament to Dick’s passion for his craft and for the inspirational leadership he provided to the entire Hemlock ’family’. Over his decades in business, countless relationships were formed with clients, suppliers, industry peers and non−profit and community organizations, all of whom experienced Dick’s perpetual optimism, creativity, intellect and his wonderful sense of humour.

Dick’s adventurous spirit led to many family vacations with Clara and the kids, which are the source of many fond memories, stories and laughter. He was an avid sailor spending weekends and holidays exploring the San Juan and Gulf Islands on the family boat, the Delft Blue. In the 80’s and 90’s, Dick’s sailing adventures also took him to Hawaii on three occasions, once as lead (and winning) navigator.

We lost him too soon but take comfort in the knowledge that he lived a full, active and accomplished life, which affected so many in a positive way. To his family and friends, Dick was always a loving and caring spirit who will live forever in our hearts. He is survived and will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 49 years, Clara (nee Boonstra), daughter Vanessa (Mike), son Richard (Pippa), his four grandchildren Genevieve, Jonathan, Georgina and Naomi, his surviving siblings Andries (Dingena), Joke, Frank (Shirley), Bill (Sieny), Henk (Jannie) and Frits (Darlene), and his many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Dick’s Life, open to his family, friends and colleagues will take place on Saturday, May 27th from 2:00PM−4:30PM at the Vancouver Convention Centre (West Building).
