Lest we forget ... Students from two Burnaby schools made their annual trek to the George Derby Centre last week to honour the veterans who live there. Students from Cariboo Hill Secondary and Armstrong Elementary, which are both close by the seniors’ centre, visited on Thursday to plant thousands of small Canadian flags all over the grounds. The flags will stay put until after Remembrance Day. How it all started in 1909 In December 1908, two policemen found a homeless man huddled in a downtown Montreal doorway. Unconscious, the man was taken to a nearby hospital where he was diagnosed as a drunk and taken to a room to sleep it off. Arthur Hair, the head orderly, noticed a blue envelope sticking out of the man’s pocket. A veteran of the South AfricanWar, Hair recognized the type of envelope. It had been issued by the BritishWar Office and contained the honourable discharge of the homeless man,Trooper James Daly, after 20 years of service. Daly, had not been drunk; he had been suffering from

hypothermia and malnutrition. Never regaining consciousness, he died two days later at the age of 53. His unclaimed body was set to be turned over to science for medical research, but Hair intervened. He was shocked by the Empire’s disregard for its veteran and raised money from friends and colleagues to give him a decent and dignified funeral. Daly’s story was the catalyst of the founding of the Last Post Fund in Montreal in April 1909. Since then, the organization has helped 150,000 service men and women likeTrooper Daly.

Burnaby RCMP and the Abbotsford Police Department have also released video of the Oct. 15 robbery in an effort to locate the suspect. Dean Zastowny, 47, is wanted in connection with robberies in Burnaby and Abbotsford in October, according to police. He is also a suspect in a number of other violent robberies across the Lower Mainland. “As is evident in the bank robbery in Abbotsford, there is a significant level of violence being used by the suspect,” Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Daniela Panesar said in a press release. “It is hugely important that if anyone

Sent to the Russian Front By Tereza Verenca

tverenca@burnabynow.com

Helmut Lemke was only 17 years old when he was conscripted to the Russian Front. The German teen received draft papers to join Adolf Hitler’s extreme military organization, the SS. At first, people could join of their own free will, but it eventually became mandatory. “I didn’t go to the draft,” Lemke tells the NOW during an interview at his Burnaby home – one he’s lived in for nearly 60 years. “People told me, ‘Listen, that’s dangerous.’ If you refuse, you can be shot.’ I thought I had the law (on my side), because if it’s voluntary, they can’t draft you into it. ” About two weeks later, after nothing happened, Lemke got scared. He put in a volunteer application to the German air force and was accepted. Given that

there weren’t enough airplanes for the number of pilots around (Lemke had a glider’s licence), he and some others were transferred to the army. “As a young person, war was some kind of adventure. And so, I was curious what it would be like. I thought I’d make the best of it.” Luckily for him, he was never seriously injured – at least compared to his comrades. While on the Russian Front in early 1945, a piece of shrapnel grazed his head, causing him to pass out. “I fell into the snow. When I came to, I saw the snow was red. Then my shoulder blade was shattered,” says Lemke, adding it took him six months to recover. On another occasion, he recalls a very close encounter with the enemy during the daytime. Sixteen tanks were making their way toward the German front line, and Lemke only had a rifle on him. As he retreated

Opinion now OUR VIEW

Name-calling is a tradition best ditched

Facts matter.Words matter. So we applaud B.C.’s new Speaker of the House, Darryl Plecas’s attempt to bring a bit more civility into the legislature. Plecas was a former Liberal MLA who took the Speaker’s position tipping the balance of power in the B.C. legislature. Needless to say, he made quite a few enemies out of his former party members. While his new position is considered

neutral in the legislature, to be sure, the Liberals don’t see him as a neutral figure. So, it’s probably not surprising that Mike de Jong blasted Plecas, saying that Plecas was setting a “dangerous precedent” and damaging freedom of speech. Others have also criticized Plecas, saying that name-calling is just part of a long parliamentary tradition. And that, well, this is how democracy works.

Uh, no. And if it was a “tradition,” it’s a tradition that needs to end. We don’t care if it’s Liberals in power, the NDP in power or the Rhinoceros Party in power, name-calling needs to end. And, we have to admit, we say this with a bit of a sense of loss.We love a great nickname. We in the media are witting or unwitting accomplices to this kind of de-

rogatory debate. Nothing makes a headline catchier than someone calling someone else a name. And politicians know that and play to the media by coming up with pithy attacks to keep their own profiles high. The nicknames are often crafted by clever punsters or communications workers whose job it is to ensure that any belittling of opponents captures the public’s attention. And, hopefully,

sticks. Monikers like “minister of job loss” do have a ring to them. And, of course, once you call an opponent a name, the opponent is bound to come back with a better name to call you. And so it goes. de Jong did tell the media that “Parliament can’t work properly without (MLAs) respecting the Speaker, that’s a fundamental tenet of the way the House functions.”

But it appeared as if de Jong was going to try and sidestep the Speaker’s new rules. We would encourage him not to do that. A clever politician can clean another politician’s clock by just using good debating tactics. Using facts instead of name-calling.Yes, it won’t be as entertaining for us in the media, but if it elevates the dialogue, we’re for it.

MY VIEW ELAN GIBSON

We are Burnaby, hear us roar

I do not understand why the whole of Burnaby’s citizenry isn’t standing up and howling with rage at the ineffectiveness of our federal Ministry of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, the National Energy Board (NEB), as well as at Kinder Morgan’s (KM) whining, and the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan’s interference. On Oct. 23, concerned citizens held a “die-in” at the regional office of the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness. A few of the organizers of this event went days in advance to the office and explained the intent of the peaceful, theatrical event. It was to present a letter to the minister’s representative, outlining the concerns of the citizens regarding the very real health and safety issues of the tank farm. On the day, the participants were greeted with a locked door and no response from within. How can a government dedicated to serving its people approve such a disaster waiting to happen in a densely populated, forested area on the side of a mountain? I would ask Minister Goodale, the attorney general of Saskatchewan, the premiers of Alberta and Saskatchewan and the prime minister to contemplate having this in their back yard, below a niversity of 25,000-plus people, above elementary schools and dense housing complexes. The proposed contents of this tank farm will triple the capacity of bitumen diluted with toxic chemicals (not

conventional crude) and no emergency plan in case of fire or boil over. The emergency response plan trial run on Sept. 20 by Kinder Morgan addressed a truck backing into a pipe, causing oil to “leak” out – a human error, not a natural or chemical disaster. This is only part of condition 136 for its approval – not the fullscale exercise at the terminal (tank farm) required before construction. Which brings me to the permits for which Kinder Morgan is having trouble “with the time required to file for, process and obtain all necessary permits and regulatory approvals” (Burnaby NOW, Oct. 20). The Section 7 of the detailed route hearings with the NEB will have 27 people opposing this route out of the 135 who requested a hearing. These hearings are being scheduled for the new year. Are these 27 persons wasting their time in preparing for the hearings? Are their concerns not going to have any weight? Kinder Morgan is again putting the cart before the horse. Before I build a house, I need to detail the land on which I wish to build. We have no reason to trust Kinder Morgan. They put seven fish-spawning deterrents in B.C. rivers without permission (we are already in an emergency situation with our chinook stock that are a primary source of food for our endangered southern killer whales.) They do have permits from the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority to start construction on their Continued on page 7

Police puzzled by pooch potshot More than a month after a four-month-old Labradorshepherd puppy was shot in the 7000 block of Fourth Street, Mounties were still looking for the shooter. Neighbours in the area had heard a gunshot on Sept. 4 at about 5:40 p.m.They ran out to find a puppy lying on the ground with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound high on its left shoulder. The bullet, from either a .177-calibre or .22-calibre rifle, had exited by its neck, according to police. The young pooch had been tied to a clothesline in the yard. “Maybe it was barking,” Sgt. Don Brown said. Police appealed to the public for help catching the culprit.

Opinionnow It’s time for us all to join together in peace Dear Editor: Remembrance Day, Nov. 11. On this day, I wear a red poppy to express my sorrow for all the soldiers of the world who died and are dying from fighting because they thought they were doing the right thing. On this day, I wear a white poppy to remember all the other people who have died and are dying from war because we all think we are doing the right thing. Today, I need a symbol to remember the natural world that has and is dying as we humans continue fighting because we don’t know what we are doing. Today, let us remember we could all perish if we continue this perpetual war. Let us remember, we the people, know the right and necessary thing to do because we can join together in peace, reject the fighting, abolish the military and together restore the planet for the living. Tree cutting is necessary in an urban environment Dear Editor: Sad as it can be to watch any tree being cut down, sometimes it has to happen. This is true of any urban area – even Burnaby, with its wealth of healthy, large older trees providing shade and quiet passageways for area residents. However, this is an urban environment and growth and change is inevitable. My heart goes out to residents of Forest Grove

who are losing some trees, but their wrath is misplaced. Unfortunately for them, knowingly or not, they live near and along a utility corridor with both gas and oil pipelines beneath their feet. Instead of attacking Fortis B.C., work with them. Planting trees back where they once grew is not an option, but having Fortis fund the planting of trees in an appropriate nearby area is an acheivable goal. Instead of attacking Fortis B.C., I urge that the upset residents of Forest Grove take a positive approach. Carl Dillon, Burnaby

dock and were given permission to install a safety boom around marine work areas during construction. I don’t believe the permit mentions anything about a six-foot multi-layer razor wire fence that has been erected around the marine terminal in Burnaby and the staging area in Vancouver? Kinder Morgan appears to believe they are above the law. I beg to differ. Why would the NEB override the due diligence of the City of Burnaby in issuing permits for tree removal and road construction? Why would Saskatchewan and Alberta interfere in matters they have little or no knowledge about? Roar, Burnaby, roar. For Lemke, Remembrance Day is about remembering those people who were forced into war, and whose lives ended too soon. “Every solider is trained to kill. And that’s the same if they’re Canadian, American, Russian or German, and that is not easy to do. So it got your mind trying to find solutions.’ If I have that, I wasn’t desperate; I wasn’t panicked.” He was never a member of the Nazi Party, he adds, and neither were his parents. “I sympathized a little bit at the beginning,” he says, noting his country was very poor after losing the First World War and having to make war reparations for decades. People didn’t have enough food to eat, and the unemployment rate had skyrocketed. “If somebody says, ‘I’ll get you out of it, they (the people) said, ‘Well, let him try; let’s see what he can do. WorksafeBC issued fine after painter fell nearly three storeys down from a forklift while working Cornelia Naylor

cnaylor@burnabynow.com

Amacon Construction Ltd. has been fined more than $15,500 for violations at a Burnaby highrise construction site last spring. WorksafeBC inspected the site at 4482 Dawson St. after a painter fell nearly three storeys from a forklift in April. An Amacon worker had used a telehandler forklift with a large garbage bin attached to raise the painter, who was working for Jerzy Quality Painting Ltd., to a third floor balcony. When the forklift operator started to retract the boom and move the forklift, the painter fell about 25 feet (7.6 m) and came within two feet (0.6 m) of hitting

the ground before a harness stopped his fall. The forklift operator told a WorkSafe inspector that it had been difficult to hear

the painter over the noise of the forklift and he also couldn’t see the painter to know when it was safe to retract the telescoping boom of the forklift.

“This employer did not ensure that there was effective means of communication between the telehandler forklift operator and the worker on the work platform that was supported by the forklift,” states a WorkSafe report. The work was also taking place near energized overhead high voltage lines, according to the report. During the inspection, the inspector also saw a worker without a respirator cutting masonry brick and releasing a cloud of dust potentially containing crystalline silica, a known cancercausing agent. The company was issued stop work orders until the problems were fixed.

Local teen invited to PM’s science fair “I got to meet real people that influence policy in Canada and that work in administration on Parliament Hill,” Lesnikov said. “I always asked them about their careers because I just found it so interesting that I was meeting these people.” Lesnikov was nominated to attend the Prime Minister’s fair by the CanadaWide Science Fair after she won the environment category at the national competition in Regina in May. Her project, titled Phytoremediation of Zinc Contaminated Mines Using Novel Transgenic A.Thaliana, involved the local teen genetically engineering a common weed for metal resistance. “Normal plants would tend to die from metal contamination, and the plant that I developed won’t die, in short,” she said. She’s been working on the project for about a year at a lab in UBC’s botany department. “I didn’t have any personal connections that would enable me to do such work, so definitely had to pitch myself, and I had to get in touch and be willing to get rejected,” she said. Lesnikov hopes to study sciences at UBC next year and continue her project with the goal of one day developing a plant that could naturally remove metal contamination from soils at old mines. “I find it crazy that plants could be able to handle metal better than we do, and when I read about metal resistance in plants, it’s just extremely interesting to me, and that’s kind of what drives me,” she said. “The fact that I get to make a difference in the world with it, that I could have the opportunity to do that is also something that I really enjoy about the work that I do.”

Cornelia Naylor

cnaylor@burnabvynow.com

One of these days, 17-year-old Phyllis Lesnikov hopes to genetically engineer a plant capable of sucking toxic metals out of contaminated mine sites. In a way, the Burnaby teen has been working on the problem since her first science fair project in Grade 9, when she set out to measure metal contamination at the old Brittania Mine site in Squamish. “For whatever reason, I became interested in the effect of metal contamination on plants,” she said of that first bit of research.

I got to meet real people that influence policy in Canada and that work … on Parliament Hill

Lesnikov, now a Grade 12 student who attends Stratford Hall in East Vancouver, has been exploring the topic at regional and national science fairs ever since. Her most recent work earned her an invitation to Canada’s first ever Prime Minister’s Science Fair in Ottawa this fall, complete with a one-on-one with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. “He was very charismatic. He had a very good handshake,” Lesnikov said. While her project was set up in the hallways at Parliament Hill on Sept. 26, the local teen also got to rub shoulders with Science Minister Kirsty Duncan and Canada’s new chief science advisor Mona Nemer among others.

BEST AND BRIGHTEST Above, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Canada’s newly appointed chief science advisor, Mona Nemer, chat with Burnaby teen Phyllis Lesnikov at the first-ever Prime Minister’s Science Fair in Ottawa in September. Two Burnaby artists are among those taking part in the 21st edition of the Eastside Culture Crawl. Vancouver’s four-day celebration of visual arts, design and crafts runs Nov. 16 to 19 in more than 500 artists’ studios, homes and garages throughout Vancouver’s Eastside. Tannis Hopkins and Corrinne Wolcoski, both Burnaby residents, will be on hand in their Parker Street studios. Hopkins is a painter who works in an impressionistic style in both oils and acrylic. “My work expresses a love of life and heartfelt connections, and the sensory experiences that define our existence,” Hopkins says in an artist’s statement. “Coming from a ‘food-centric’ family I followed in my mother’s footsteps, cooking and entertaining as both a creative and communal outlet for me. It became only natural to evolve to painting food culture.”

How do you define health?

www.taylorandblair.com

Health and wellness is about more than surviving, it’s about thriving DavidicusWong HEALTHWISE

editorial@burnabynow.com

When we think about health, too often we consider it from the negative. The focus is on symptoms, injuries, illness or disease, and health by default can be defined by the absence of these negative conditions. That’s actually a very limiting – and unhealthy – way of thinking about your health. Many approach their health care the same way. They see doctors or other health-care providers mainly for the treatment of these conditions. Health is defined in the negative: the absence of disease, and health care becomes passive: the treatment given by a healthcare professional. I think of health and wellness as the optimal balance of the important areas of your life (physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, family, social, work, rest and play) – guided by what you value and where you find meaning – and the achievement of your positive potential throughout life. It is a dynamic balance because – as you well know – everything in our lives is changing all the time. When dealing with a crisis in one area of our lives, we might

neglect the others. If we become too focused on our work, we may neglect our families or our emotional wellbeing. When we are busy raising our children, we may neglect our friends or our physical health. To maintain the balance of wellness requires our attention – and intentions – over a lifetime. Though we all need the assistance of doctors, nurses and other health-care providers at different points in our lives most of your health care is provided by just one person. That person, of course, is you. In this way, real health care is self-care.The best predictors of your future health are the habits you practise today. The four foundations of self-care – or a healthy lifestyle – are: 1.What you eat (what you put into your body); 2.What you do (physical activity); 3. How you feel (emotional wellbeing); 4. How you relate (healthy relationships). For useful information on a healthier lifestyle, see the resources available online on the website of the Burnaby Division of Family Practice. Look for our Empowering Patients public health education program. www. divisionsbc.ca/burnaby/

Wildcat tourney hits town Burnaby’s girls hockey tournament grows to 46 teams and 700 players By Dan Olson

dolson@burnabynow.com

There is strength in numbers, as well as a reminder. With the Burnaby Wildcats Remembrance Day Hockey Tournament reaching a new high in teams involved, the prognosis for the girls’ tourney is very bright. For a second straight year, the tourney has grown in numbers, with 46 teams signing up over five divisions. Echo Lee, Burnaby Minor Hockey Association’s female hockey coordinator, said it’s all about word of mouth. “I think our tournament is fairly well known by now, so teams have learned to set the time aside and to book early,” said Lee. “We no longer have to call up other teams about if they want to come.” And it means there’s going to be a lot of great action on the ice, with all the games taking place at Burnaby 8-Rinks from Saturday to Monday. Teams are coming from a variety of locales, including Washington State, Kelowna and 100 Mile House, seeking fun and good competition. Lee said the focus is providing a ton of both. “I think that’s a big reason our tournament has grown; there are a lot of teams, so they know they’ll play different teams and get to see what the competition is like from a lot of different associations.” As part of the long weekend, the tourney will feature numerous fun office activities for players and their siblings, including a photo booth, yoga sessions, face painting and more. On the hockey side, Fortius Sport and Health Centre will present a proper hockey warm-up sessio, while Watson Brain Health will have a presentation on concussion awareness. Last year, the tournament drew 39 teams in the novice, atom, peewee, bantam and midget C divisions. Girls hockey has become more established around the province. Burnaby’s Wildcat teams remain stable at six, which is mostly dictated by ice availability. Lee hopes with the city investing in two more sheets of ice in south Burnaby, there will be more opportunities to grow girls hockey in the future. “We’ve been pretty steady at six teams for a few years now,” she said, noting Burnaby is among the smaller girls hockey divisions in the Lower Mainland. “We haven’t done any recruiting or advertising because we don’t have the ice to add more teams.”

Moscrop impresses under pressure

Both senior girls and boys teams have rolled with the punches en route to playoffs By Dan Olson

dolson@burnabynow.com

Court is in session for the Moscrop senior Panthers. Both the senior girls and boys teams were setting their sights on big efforts Thursday night in the league playoff championships (played after NOW deadline). For the girls, adversity is going to be either fuel for their fire or a heavy weight to bear. In a tournament two weekends ago in South Surrey, Moscrop’s standout power Camilla DiVito suffered a shoulder injury that has put her on the sidelines. Panthers head coach Kim Or said losing DiVito, a Grade 12 international student from Italy, has created opportunity for others. But it’s hard not to see the challenge, considering the impact DiVito’s unexpected arrival provided for the No. 6-ranked Burnaby team. “(DiVito) instantly put us into the upper echelon of the AAAA class,” remarked Or. “We had our best finish at the UBC-O tournament (in October) when we lost to (No. 2-ranked) Handsworth in the finals, and Camilla and Fiona Chen were selected to the all-star team. ... Missing Camilla will be a huge loss for us, but this group of special girls has continued to be resilient and focused on the process.” Undefeated in league action, the Panthers began the Burnaby-New West playoffs on Tuesday by sweeping Burnaby Mountain, to enter into last night’s championship final against Burnaby Central. Both teams are assured of spots at next week’s Lower Mainlands, as Moscrop and

Burnaby Central will co-host the tourney, beginning Nov. 16. “This is truly a team and everyone contributes and everyone plays,” remarked Or. “They love training and being together, and it is so nice to see and be a part of.” The Moscrop boys also had a date with Burnaby Central yesterday in the league final. A perfect 6-0 after the regular season, the Panthers took a tough loss in pool play of the Argyle tournament last week, which coach Tatsuki Taylor saw as a great motivational opportunity. “I think it was a wake-up call for the boys, and now we know to not take any team or situation lightly,” said Taylor of his No. 18-ranked squad. “I think the boys are up to any challenge thrown at them, and they’re looking to prove themselves against the Vancouver and Richmond competition.” Moscrop’s main goal of advancing to the provincials will get its ultimate test next week at the Lower Mainlands, but Taylor feels it is within reach. “We know the Vancouver and Richmond teams are all very talented and tough to beat, so we have to approach this tournament with an underdog mentality and with maximum effort,” he said. The team has been led by leftside Ted Graveson, the Panthers’ most effective passer, and setter Benjamin Truong. Carving out important roles were leftside Jodai Suzuki and Grade 10 Markus Wong on the rightside. “Qualifying for the B.C.s was a goal we set for ourselves at the very beginning of the season, and in order to meet that goal we have to play tough and smart,” added Taylor.

MOUNTAIN, NORTH TOPS IN JUNIORS The Burnaby Mountain Lions emerged victorious in the Burnaby-New West junior girls volleyball playoffs this week. They topped Burnaby North 3-1 in the championship final on Tuesday, after blanking Burnaby South 3-0 in the semifinal last week. Both the Lions and Vikings now advance to the Vancouver & District playoffs, while Burnaby South, who defeated Moscrop 3-2 to place third, has to play Elphinstone in a wildcard contest for the last berth. The Lions’ Emilija Marian and Ruby Beach were named to the league all-star team. They were joined by Burnaby North’s Mika Kurahashi and Jaclynn Quan, Burnaby South’s Sophia Liamas and Moscrop’s Serena Dong. The junior boys final saw the Burnaby North Vikings, who finished with a 4-0 record during the regular season, stop the Byrne Creek Bulldogs 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-16). North, which dropped just three sets during the season – two in a nail-biting 3-2 win over Moscrop to end the regular season – earned the league’s top seed to the Vancouver & Districts behind a strong performance. In the semifinals, they defeated Burnaby South 3-0, while Byrne Creek edged Burnaby Mountain 3-2 in a thriller. In the battle for third place, South withstood a strong Mountain push to prevail 3-2. Picking up all-star awards were the Vikings’ Kyle Anderson and Justin Quan, Byrne Creek’s Samson Cai and Jun Choi, Burnaby South’s Ryan Jhutti, and Burnaby Mountain’sYubyn Cho.

Giants end skid against Chiefs

A four-game losing streak is in the rearview mirror, thanks to a strong weekend for Burnaby’s Christian Buono. The one-time Burnaby Winter Club sniper counted four goals for the Vancouver Northwest Giants in a pair of wins over the rival Vancouver Northeast Chiefs. On Saturday, Buono opened the scoring 12 seconds into the second period, and tallied again 12 minutes later as part of a five-goal outburst. They would go on to win 6-1. A day later, the slick centre potted a pair in a 5-2 victory. Also contributing a goal

Sunday was Burnaby defenceman Jason Chu, while teammate Alek Sukunda added a pair of assists. A second-year player with the Giants, Buono leads the team in scoring with 11 goals and seven assists in 12 games. Chu sits second in team scoring with two goals and 12 assists. The 8-4 Giants, who draw players from Burnaby and West and North Vancouver, venture to Kamloops to play the Blazers this weekend. The Chiefs, with a player territory of east Burnaby, New West, the Tri-Cities and Ridge Meadows, sit sixth in the league at 5-6-1.

All-Academic trio

Simon Fraser University’s Christine Howlett, Jayme Bratsberg and Katerina Dolguikh were selected to the 2017 Great Northwest Athletic Conference’s volleyball All-Academic team. For Howlett, it’s the third straight year. The Delta native holds a 3.51 grade point average, while averaging 2.57 killsper-set. Bratsberg is a two-time selection, while Dolguikh is making her debut on the All-Academic team.
