More pop-up pipeline protests planned By Tereza Verenca
tverenca@burnabynow.com
For the third time in as many weeks, anti-pipeline protesters have blocked two access gates at the Westridge Marine Terminal in Burnaby. The group, which calls itself the Justin Trudeau Brigade, staged demonstrations on Nov. 30, Dec. 7 and Dec. 14 during the ear-
ly morning hours. “We are inspired by our prime minister who famously spoke the truth that governments grant permits but only communities give permission,” said David Mivasair, a Vancouver resident and retired rabbi. “So we felt we’d name ourselves after him and honour him by fulfilling his word. He’s our teacher. He’s like our guru.” The goal is to cause as many delays as
possible, noted Mivasair, including blocking workers from coming in and out of the facility. “Our goal is informed by Kinder Morgan Canada CEO Ian Anderson, who in November, when he was commenting about the permitting process in the City of Burnaby, he said publicly that delays are costing his investors $90 million a month. Citynow ON THE ROAD WITH OPERATION RED NOSE
Dobie’s in the driver’s seat for one night
‘The ride is a little awkward at first. Eventually we get talking about housing. How could we not talk housing?’ By Cayley Dobie
cdobie@burnabynow.com
I
t’s 9 p.m. on a Friday night, and I am standing in a cavernous loading bay at the ICBC claims centre in Coquitlam. Tonight, New Westminster Mayor Jonathan Cote and I are to drive around the city for Operation Red Nose, picking up folks too inebriated to drive. The plan is to ride around with Rudy, the Operation Red Nose mascot, and visit bars in New West to promote the service, then pick up some clients. By the time I arrived at the claims centre, there were already about 20 volunteers gathered. Chris Wilson, organizer of the local Operation Red Nose, greets everyone as they enter. Some people have been volunteering for years, he says, so they’re pros. Volunteers sign in and pick up their name tags and red vests. There are already clients waiting for rides, so the volunteers who are ready head out. Jonathan and ICBC road safety rep Karon Trenaman arrive a short while later. We say hi and proceed to check in. Chris gives us the rundown of the rules and what to expect, then he introduces us to Rudy (Nicole) and her team. The goal is to get everyone home safely, Chris says. By 9:45 p.m. we’re on our way to our first stop: Sapperton District Taphouse on East Columbia Street. The ride is a little awkward at first. Eventually, we get talking about housing (How could we not talk housing, right?). I tell Jonathan I lived in New Westminster until my rent surpassed $1,000 for a small (tiny) one-bedroom apartment near Moody Park. Now I live in a twobedroom basement suite (with laundry, storage and parking) for $1,350 in Vancouver. He’s shocked. “Usually it’s the other way around,” he says. By 10:11 p.m. a dense fog has settled over the city. We head down Columbia and up Sixth Street to River’s Reach Pub.
Inside, people cheer as Rudy walks in. At the back of the pub, Farhan Lalji, head coach of the winning Hyacks football team, is enjoying a night out with friends. He and Jonathan pose for a photo. At 10:35 p.m. Jonathan wants Rudy to drop by Beer Friday. “What’s Beer Friday?” Karon asks as we pull up to a row of townhouses in the centre of the city. Jonathan describes it as a gathering of the “New West Twitterati.” Jonathan and Rudy climb the stairs to Brad and Alice Cavanagh’s house. The who’s who of #NewWest are gathered in the kitchen, and they jump up for photos with Rudy and the mayor. After Beer Friday it’s on to Kelly O’Bryan’s/Carlos O’Bryan’s, then Hops, the Terminal and, finally, the Paddlewheeler. By now it’s almost midnight, and we’re still waiting for our first call. The idea was to only serve clients within New Westminster, but it doesn’t seem to be very busy. On our way back to the claims centre (we’ve almost given up), we get our first call: a pickup in Port Moody with a drop-off in Coquitlam. None of us know the area well, but we go for it.
He claims he only knows New West. Anything past 10th Avenue and he’s lost ...
We make it to the restaurant on St. Johns Street. Jonathan and Karen declare me the driver and Jonathan takes on the role of navigator – a role he’s a little apprehensive about. He claims he only knows New West. Anything past 10th Avenue and he’s lost, he says. Lucky for us, the clients know where they’re going. The clients, Jennifer and Greg, were at a Christmas party. Greg is a longtime
Making merry: Above, Rudy poses for a photo with, from left, New Westminster Mayor Jonathan Cote, and New West residents Brad and Alice Cavanagh. Operation Red Nose volunteer, and he typically works every night of the season. He donates $40. Our next client is a couple looking for a ride from River’s Reach to a condo in the Brow of the Hill. We pull up to the pub and hop out.The couple come out and we walk over to their car. (I will call them Boyfriend and Girlfriend.) Boyfriend drives a Mercedes sports car.Two doors. He asks us to be careful, his car is very precious. I agree and ask for the keys. “You’re the driver?” he asks, incredulously. “Yep, Jonathan is the navigator,” I say, smiling. He shakes off his disbelief and gets into the passenger seat. He doesn’t want to sit in the back, so Jonathan climbs in the back with Girlfriend. There’s a pile of empty plastic water bottles where his feet should go. I climb in. Once I press the push button starter, the seat starts adjusting on its own. I stop it. (Later Jonathan tells me he thought the seat was going to crush him. In his head, he says, he was thinking: “Oh no Cayley, please stop!”) On the way home, Boyfriend tells us normally, he’d
just drive. One time, before he met Girlfriend and was living in uptown, he was on his way home and made an illegal left turn at Sixth and Sixth. Of course there was a cop there, he says. “It’s such a cash grab for the city,” Boyfriend says. “Well actually, the money doesn’t go to the city,” Jonathan says, “it goes to the province.” “Well still,” Boyfriend says, unaware he’s talking to the mayor. He donates $20.
Did you see his face when you told him you were the driver?
When we’re out of earshot, Jonathan bursts out laughing. “Did you see his face when you told him you were the driver?” he says. Karon drives us to our next pickup at Union Jack Public House on Seventh Street. Two young women from Ontario need a ride to Burnaby.
Why aren’t there more Bulk Barns in Vancouver? They hop in the back seat while Jonathan and I climb in the front. Again, there’s a pile of empty water bottles at his feet. We head up Eighth Street and into Burnaby. By now the fog is thick. I can barely see the car behind me. While we’re driving, the women question us.What do we do? Why did we volunteer? Where does the money go? Do you like Bulk Barn? Have you ever been to Bulk Barn? Why aren’t there more Bulk Barns in Vancouver? When we arrive, Karon is not behind us.We must have lost her along the way. The women let us stay in the car while we call Karon. She tells us she lost us near Kensington and is now by Deer Lake. She’s close. I tell her to head over the highway. We’ll be waiting at Holdom and Sumas. We hop out. The women donate $25 USD.
It takes Karon 30 minutes to find us. To keep warm, Jonathan and I jump up and down while we wait.We talk about transit, the Mayors’ Council, housing (again) and crime. Jonathan has a dry sense of humour and is pretty funny. When Karon finally arrives, we’re both overjoyed (and a little frozen). It’s almost 2 a.m.Time to go home.

Don’t rush minimum wage hike: board of trade Cayley Dobie
cdobie@burnabynow.com
The Burnaby business community is warning against increasing B.C.’s minimum wage too fast. Businesses want to see increases to the minimum wage made regularly over a period of several years, according to a report released last month by the Burnaby Board of Trade. “While the discussion around the minimum wage often focuses on raising it to $15, there is little consideration for the impacts of what happens to the worker already earning $15 or $18 or $20 per hour today,” said board of trade president and CEO Paul Holden in a press release. “Our members feel, and we agree, that if the minimum wage increases dramatically that there will be a knock-on effect where other wage levels would be forced up quicker than business may be able to handle.” The report, which sur-
veyed Burnaby Board of Trade members on issues related to the provincial government’s pledge to raise B.C.’s minimum wage to $15, found that most members (53 per cent) were supportive of increasing the province’s minimum wage. (The minimum wage is currently set to $11.35.) Members were, however, concerned that if the wage is increased too fast, it would have a ripple effect on other wages paid to employees – especially those already earning more than $15 an hour, according to the report. The board of trade and its members want the increases to the minimum wage to follow the consumer price index. This would provide businesses a predictable timeline that would allow them to properly plan and manage the increases, noted the report. “We work hard to ensure the ideas, opinions and concerns of the busi-
ness community are heard by all levels of government,” Holden said. “On the issue of a $15-per-hour minimum wage, we want to see whatever plan emerges take into account how the business community, particularly small business, will be impacted.” In October, the province established the FairWage Commission, an independent body tasked with making recommendations to guide the province toward a $15-an-hour minimum wage and a process on how the minimum wage should be regularly reviewed and increased once $15-an-hour is achieved, according to the province. The Burnaby Board of Trade will send the findings of its report to the commission. The first round of public consultations wrapped up earlier this month, and the commission must deliver its first report to Minister of Labour Harry Bains by the end of the year.

Opinion now OUR VIEW
Don we now our bright reflective tape
It’s that time of the year when most of us wake up when it’s dark and come home from work when it’s dark. Throw in some rain and a long day of looking at a computer or working on your feet and it’s a recipe for accidents. Now add in distracted pedestrians, distracted drivers and the everpresent draw of looking at your cellphone, and, frank-
ly, it’s a wonder that pedestrian deaths aren’t much higher. Not to suggest that there is ever an acceptable level of injury or deaths. If you ever leave your house, chances are pretty good that you have witnessed a near collision involving a pedestrian at some point in the winter months. We recently received a phone call from a concerned reader who asked
that we please tell our readers to be more careful. She is not the only one who is concerned. Pedestrians often wear all-black clothing, huddle under all-black umbrellas and walk while looking at their cellphones. Drivers are often racing to get home, driving much too fast for the road conditions and, despite ramped up distracted driving fines, are still looking at their
cellphones in their cars. Please, people. It only takes one glance away from a crosswalk, one hurried step out into a busy street, one mistaken assumption that a car is going to slow down and stop, to turn a once-happy day into a disaster that will reap consequences for years to come for so many people. We are often so wrapped up in our daily deadlines and chores that our minds
and attention are seldom in present time. We’re mentally planning that Christmas dinner, thinking about what to give our loved ones, thinking about work stuff that’s piling up. Before you know it, you’ve become a victim or you’ve become a driver who has struck a pedestrian. We ask you on behalf of that dear reader who took the time to call us, but
we also ask you on behalf of all of your loved ones, our emergency service folks, the police, the justice system, and everyone who hopes for the best for their fellow citizens – slow down, pay attention, and put some reflective tape on your clothing. The life you save may be your own.
MY VIEW DERMOD TRAVIS
‘Fake news’ is just quackery Risky to confess such things – especially publicly – but there are a few things that get under my skin fast. Eons ago, when I was in high school, it only took a single word. It wasn’t the word itself so much, as it was the tone some used saying it that suggested you were getting flipped off more than you were communicating. Fast forward to 2017 and I’m happy to report that it now takes two words said in any tone – or used in any manner – that will do the same: fake news. Grabbing a cab this past week, the driver was well-immersed in a podcast of a national radio show where the host routinely used the term as he interviewed his guest. My takeaway after a 10-minute ride was that it had something to do with dandelions, a medical study and Windsor, Ont. The guest had evidently become the target of what might be called the fake news gang of natural medicine or Western medicine, difficult to tell when coming in late to the podcast. The host was highly sympathetic with his guest. But what really jumped out was how he nonchalantly used “fake news” in his questions, as though it had become a legitimate term to contrast opinions. I suddenly felt the crying need for that school yard tone from eons ago. Once all that was needed to dismiss a crackpot theory was simply to say, “more people believe Elvis is still alive than would fall for that” and you would move on, but
somehow we’re now party to a battle between rival fake news gangs. It’s not a term to legitimatize. It’s quackery. It’s as though the phrase is some magical pixie dust that makes everything disappear that runs counter to someone’s point of view. As former U.S. senator, the late Daniel Patrick Moynihan once said: “Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not to his own facts.” But instead of checking facts, screaming “fake news” seems to suffice. Case in point: in the ongoing debate over the Insurance Corporation of B.C. and future rate hikes, a few are advocating for private insurance. Fair enough, it’s a legitimate opinion to hold, but I tweeted a reply that they should be careful what they wish for: Ontario has the highest auto insurance premiums in the land and it’s 100 per cent private. Backing up the tweet were inter-provincial analyses of auto insurance costs prepared by the Manitoba and Saskatchewan governments, the Insurance Bureau of Canada and the Consumers’ Association of Canada, all of which put Ontario out front by far and all dismissed as fake news. Evidently, someone’s neighbour doesn’t pay the amount cited in the reports for premiums in Alberta. By popularizing the term, some are making it mainstream. Earlier this year, the B.C. Liberal Party was looking for Digital Warriors to help that party “combat fake news.” Continued on page 7

Opinionnow What would recalling the government solve? Dear Editor: This morning, I heard David Suzuki chastising Andrew Weaver for not bringing down the B.C. NDP over their decision to continue the Site C dam project. When it comes to the natural sciences Suzuki is brilliant; the social sciences, not so much. Let’s try just a modicum of foresight. The B.C. Green Party brings down the current government, and we return to the polls for another “first-past-the-post” election. A couple of things are sure. The work will continue on the Site C dam to the tune of $15 million a month and, whichever party forms government, will continue the project. If we want an end to ideological-based governance, where the B.C. Liberals are the party of Big Business and the NDP are the party of Big Union, then we need electoral reform in this province. When parties have to collaborate to govern, then we’ll have a hope of fact- and reason-based governance. David W.G. Macdonald, Burnaby
It’s time we all had a ‘firmer grip on reality’ Continued from page 6 Former independent MLA Vicki Huntington must have signed up. How else to explain her refuting the claim that the B.C. NDP had hacked the Liberal party’s web-
site? Someone else took issue with a New York Times article that IntegrityBC tweeted and replied fake news. My response: prove the facts are incorrect or unfollow us. Harsh? Admittedly, not one of my more diplomatic tweets, but it’s time to draw a line in the sand with those whose contribution to public debate is limited to the same two words. When facts challenge your opinion, then reexamine your opinion. In his farewell speech, former President Barack Obama noted: “For too many of us, it’s become safer to retreat into our own bubbles … surrounded by people who share the same political outlook and never challenge our assumptions. “And increasingly we become so secure in our bubbles that we start accepting only information, whether it’s true or not, that fits our opinions, instead of basing our opinions on the evidence, … but without some common baseline of facts, without a willingness to admit new information and concede that your opponent might be making a fair point, and that science and reason matter, then we’re going to keep talking past each other.” Maybe that’s why @TheGoodGodAbove tweeted a new commandment: “Thou shalt stop calling everything you don’t like ‘fake news!’Thou shalt attain a firmer grip on reality.” She has a point. City now Mayor sings praises of city’s committees and boards Tereza Verenca
tverenca@burnabynow.com
Instead of boasting about the city’s accomplishments during his year-end address, Burnaby’s mayor talked about something a little different. Derek Corrigan’s 13-minute speech on Dec. 4 was all about the committee system within city hall that does a lot of the behind-the-scenes work. “I think sometimes when people see the council meet-
ings, they see us go through things very quickly and they see a number of reports, and they say, ‘Where is the debate happening?’ I wanted to explain a lot of this work goes on at the committee level and involves a lot more people,” he told the NOW after the council meeting. The groups – made up of local citizens, city councillors, business leaders and community members – advise council on important issues, whether that’s planning and development or
Activists disperse Continued from page 1 activists disperse as soon as the cops show up. “You can get in the newspaper; oh, three arrests. That doesn’t stop the pipeline. It just clogs up the court system and takes our time and could impose restrictions on us. ... If we could just be there for a few hours and go home, then we accomplished a little piece. “We’ll come back plenty of times. My intention is to keep doing what we’re doing. It would be amazing if 100 people did this. We made ourselves into 10 teams of 10 people and each team went once a week, different times,” he said. According to Mivasair, the protesters are an “ad hoc” group, made up of folks from Burnaby Resi-
dents Opposing Kinder Morgan Expansion, a few from the Sunshine Coast and others who have shown up to support the cause. “I called some people three weeks ago and said, ‘What do you think about doing this?’ It seemed to work, (so I said) ‘Let’s do it again next week,’” he told the NOW. In a statement,Trans Mountain said: “We support the right to peacefully and lawfully express opinions and views about our project.” Last week, the National Energy Board ruled Kinder Morgan did not have to abide by two of Burnaby’s bylaws and could continue with work on the $7.4-billion Trans Mountain expansion project. public safety and parks and recreation. In his speech, Corrigan praised each committee for “bringing forward to council recommendations on almost all areas of city activities,” and said it allows for a more efficient process. “Other councils go on for hours and hours and hours, with people asking mundane questions that could have been asked with-
out taking up council time. That, I think, is a big asset to have the committee system in place,” he said. The mayor was “hopeful” about more people participating at the civic level. To join as a board, committee or commission volunteer, applicants must apply online. Positions are done by appointment, and are always filled a year in advance, with recruitment tak-
ing place in the fall. “This year, we saw a really good result, as we’ve just got a pile of applications. We don’t have a lot of positions this year, but we’ve got a lot of applications and really capable people who are applying from a broad range of backgrounds,” Corrigan said. Last year, the city amalgamated half of its committees. For example, the traf-
fic safety committee and the mayor’s task force on graffiti were dissolved and are now part of the public safety committee. Corrigan said residents shouldn’t be discouraged if they can’t make it onto a committee or commission and should still attend the meetings. To learn more, visit tinyurl.com/BBYVolunteer.

City now Developer guilty of tax evasion A Burnaby real estate developer has been sentenced with 12 months’ probation, 20 hours of community service and a $42,950 fine after pleading guilty to tax evasion, according to the Canada Revenue Agency. Harpreet Kaur Sidhu is the sole director and shareholder of 6368 Lucky Construction Ltd., a company that buys residential properties, demolishes the exist-
ing buildings, subdivides the lots, constructs new homes and then sells the newly built properties. Sidhu pleaded guilty to one count of tax evasion in B.C. Provincial Court on Dec. 8. A CRA investigation determined she had forged a Residential Tenancy Agreement (RTA) for a North Vancouver rental property owned and constructed by Lucky in order to evade tax-
es, according to the CRA. “By falsely stating the tenancy date on the RTA as prior to the July 1, 2010 HST implementation, Ms. Sidhu attempted to evade the payment of tax,” states the CRA notification. “The difference between the five per cent GST and the 12 per cent HST payable on the fair market value of the rental property … is $42,950.”

New biz gives boost to food entrepreneurs Commissary kitchen offers space for food trucks and e-commerce food businesses for storage and prep Cayley Dobie
cdobie@burnabynow.com
The idea was to start their own food truck business. Ryan Mackay and Josh McWilliams were chefs. They knew the food industry. It was perfect. But when the pair set out to find a space to store supplies and do prep, they discovered there weren’t many places in Metro Vancouver that offered an affordable and supportive space. So they ditched the food truck idea and decided to open their own commissary kitchen, kind of like a coworking space for the Lower Mainland’s burgeoning food truck industry and other small food entrepreneurs. With the help of Jason Wong, who runs Beta Collective, a co-working space in Surrey, the trio set out to find a location for their commissary. “We looked in Port Moody – we looked at a place on Brewers Road – and that didn’t work out. They gave it to somebody else, but once we found this place, we kind of fell in love with the front-house, backhouse vibe,” Mackay told the NOW. “This place” is unit A6 at 5279 Still Creek Ave. and is the new home forYVR Prep, dubbed by its founders “Metro Vancouver’s premier commissary kitchen.” “As far as a first location for us, we really wanted to be as central and as accessible to downtown as possible,”Wong said, adding the Burnaby location provides easy access to Metro Vancouver as well as places like Surrey, Langley and Maple Ridge. The 10,000-square-foot

space features 18 prep stations, shared cooking stations equipped with deep fryers, 20 burners and convection ovens, plus freezer space, dry storage and cold storage, and a self-contained space for cold prep and other businesses like juiceries, vegan and vegetarian meals. “It’s a production facility, first and foremost,” Mackay said. Mackay,Wong and McWilliams will act as man-
agers to ensure the clients’ needs are met, and that everyone “plays nice in the sandbox.” “So far the potential clients we’ve spoken with have a wide variety needs,”Wong said. “So it’s going to be a bit of a delicate balance.” The plan is to operate with two shifts – a.m. and p.m. – with the intention to one day be accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
“The vision is supporting the small food businesses, and just trying to have fun with that,” Mackay said.
It’s going to be a bit of a delicate balance “And supporting the local food system as a whole.

We see some gaps where a space like ours can really fulfil and support. There’s so many people who want to be food entrepreneurs that are aspiring to launch the next Earnest’s Ice Cream – or whatever – but they’re doing it from the confines of their kitchen table, from their four-burner stove at home,”Wong added. “It’s a serious bottleneck for them.” Because of the size of the

#FLASHBACKFRIDAY
HOMETOWN FAVOURITE: One of Burnaby’s favourite sons agreed to lend his name to a
local high school theatre and threw in $100,000 in bursary money for good measure in late 1995. Michael J. Fox visited Burnaby South Secondary on Dec. 14 and announced he would fund two $5,000 scholarships for 10 years for students looking to pursue a career in the performing arts. The theatre at the still-newish school had been named the Michael J. Fox Theatre at a Nov. 23 concert, but the movie star had just wrapped up a seven-month shoot in New Zealand and was spending time with his wife and kids in New York at the time, so he toured the school in December instead. Three-game run propels ’Dogs to poll position Reflecting an urban, working-class neighbourhood, Byrne Creek earns its stripes with sweat, grit and skill
By Dan Olson
dolson@burnabynow.com
It appears Burnaby is in the epicentre of something big. For a second straight week, a different local team has drawn the crosshairs of B.C. senior boys basketball pundits and been thrust into the No. 1 spotlight – and for the Byrne Creek Bulldogs, it’s a first-time occurrence. The secret to getting noticed isn’t a mystery, either. “You put together a good week of games and it affects the rankings,” remarked Byrne Creek coach Bal Dhillon. Last week, when Burnaby South emerged as the No. 1-ranked team in AAAA, Byrne Creek was listed tied for eighth in the AAA boys poll put forth by B.C. High School Boys Basketball. Being just a few weeks into the season, volatility in the rankings isn’t unusual – it’s expected. Either case, Burnaby’s latest top team will focus on doing what got them the attention in the first place. At the Tsumura Basketball Invitational in Langley, the Bulldogs shook off an opening 88-82 loss to Walnut Grove – ranked No. 5 in AAAA – and peeled off three straight wins to place ninth overall. In topping R.A. McMath 109-62, who at the time were slotted No. 2 among AAA schools, the challengers capped a forceful run and earned the earmark of being No. 1, for at least a week. “It was a good week for us,” said Dhillon. “We lost a close game to Walnut Grove (88-82) and had three good games against ranked opponents. … Basketball is a pretty simple game, and it doesn’t change all that much. If you work hard, play smart and come together as a team, you’re likely going to win your share of games.” The roll began with a 65-58 victory over No. 5 North Delta, where Grade 11 guard Bithow Wan cashed in 20 points and Martin Djunga 19, followed by a 73-51 decision over a banged-up No. 4 South Kamloops. Taking a closer look at the loss, momentum swings took their toll as Byrne Creek erased a 15-point deficit with a huge run, only to witness the Gators go 15-0 in the fourth quarter to gain the upper hand. “Successful teams work together and play smart basketball,” Dhillon added. “We are capable, when we do that, of beating anybody in the province.” The 3-1 record was the inverse of the previous week at Heritage Woods, where losses to St. George’s (92-84), Kitsilano (63-59) and Vancouver College (94-85) were countered by a 78-69 win over Kelowna. Besides the fact that each loss was to an AAAA-
Obstacles to overcome: The Byrne Creek Bulldogs’ Sufi Amed, at right, battles Burnaby North’s Nick Liu during the league opener last week. The Bulldogs earned its first-ever No. 1 ranking this week, after posting a 3-1 record at the Tsumura Basketball Invitational in Langley. PHOTO CHUNG CHOW
ranked team, they were also fairly tight contests where Byrne Creek had its moments in the sun. “We didn’t do so well, at least result-wise, at the Heritage Woods tournament. Every game for us was a unique challenge.”
Basketball is a pretty simple game, and it doesn’t change all that much. Already 3-0 in Burnaby-New West league action, with decisions over Burnaby North, Cariboo Hill and Moscrop, the squad will break for the holidays after next weekend’s Rick Hansen tournament. Then they’ll come together and kick it up
at St.Thomas More’s Chancellor tournament in the first week back at school in January. “I think the holidays are a dangerous time,” said Dhillon. “You’ve got to keep your head together and get back on the horse and keep the train moving. “When you’re away from the routine and come back for that first tournament, if the holiday wasn’t a good time then you’re going to tank.” Dhillon hasn’t set a target goal this year, preferring to let the players play without extra pressure. The boys themselves know what they want and know what they need to bring to get there, he said. Finishing fourth last year at the B.C.s does set up a benchmark of where they could build upon, though. Blessed with talented players like Majok Deng, Sufi Ahmed, Djunga and Wan – and
solid contributors like Daniel Cion and Titgol Jok – the Bulldogs present a well-rounded roster for any challenge. Coming from a part of Burnaby where working-class and newer Canadians, many as refugee immigrants, settle, Byrne Creek reflects its neighbourhood well. Character, determination and resourcefulness in the face of tough odds are part of the glue that binds this basketball team together. “It’s a bit of a motley crew as it usually is, and I put myself in that mix as well,” said the coach. “There’s a toughness and a grit factor that reflects where they come from. At the heart of it is the community.” And they carry that with pride. “For us, it’s about process and just playing hard every day,” said Dhillon. “I don’t put a number on (our) expectations. If we do the work, everything else will take care of itself.”
Wildcats roll out the red carpet for War on the Floor By Dan Olson
dolson@burnabynow.com
The numbers don’t suggest it, but the Burnaby Central Wildcats’ wrestling team is ready for action. As hosts to this weekend’s War on the Floor meet, Burnaby Central will use the opportunity to add another level of experience before the second league meet in the new year. While the team is down to 18
members, half the size of its halcyon days less than a decade ago, the Wildcats still have medals on their minds. “We’re hoping to step it up (at this meet),” remarked Burnaby Central coach Gianni Buono. “The season’s only a month old, but we’re working hard and we’re seeing some results.” Last year, it was the Wildcats girls team that made the biggest ripple en route to the pro-
vincials, finishing fourth overall. That was greatly enhanced by Sarah Brinkac’s gold medal performance, and with Brinkac now at Simon Fraser University, there’s a void and an opportunity for someone else to set the tone. Buono said two members of the squad are showing skills that could put them on the podium in the near future. Grade 12 wrestler Sylvia Ly, in the 54-kilogram division, and
Grade 11 Sanna Ehayana, in 51kg, are the real deal. Ly is looking to improve on last year’s provincial bronze medal. On the boys’ side, Dylan Duggan, a Grade 11 who grapples in the 51kg division, has the potential to make a run. “I think all three could medal (at the provincials) – they have that potential,” said Buono. “We have a couple of others who could be in the mix, too. It all depends
upon the next few months.” The War on the Floor brings together high schoolers from Grades 8 to 12 in a sanctioned event for the two-day meet, starting today (Friday). For Buono, it’s a great opportunity for the wrestlers to measure their efforts in preparation for the new year. “There are things to work on, and I always want our wrestlers working hard, no matter what.”

Division rivals throw wrench into Steelers’ streak
Memories of an eight-game winning streak are fading, after the Grandview Steelers ran aground in a pair of games against conference rivals this week. After Tuesday’s 5-4 setback to the Delta Ice Hawks, the Steelers must be wondering what it takes to gain ground on their top rival. It was a tight game for most of the night despite Grandview generating just 19 shots
on goal against the No. 1 team in B.C. They grabbed an early lead on Brodie Crawford’s 12th goal of the season just two minutes into the contest. Delta countered three minutes later and took its first lead early in the second period. JarodYau pulled the Steelers even three minutes later, but Delta finished the frame with a pair of goals, the last one with 37 seconds left in the second stanza.
In the third, Jordan Myers made it 4-3, but halfway through the period the Ice Hawks’ Alex Suprynowicz notched the game winner. Mateo Coltellaro made it a one-goal game with 4:41 remaining. Cale Dolan made 27 saves to keep Grandview close, while Delta improved to 24-2-0-1 on the year. Earlier in the week, second-place Richmond halted the Steelers’ 11-game unbeat-
en streak in a 6-2 decision. Counting goals for Burnaby-based Grandview were Anthony Benevoli and Emerson Kostner. The squad, which sits third in the Tom Shaw Conference, a point behind Richmond with an 18-10-1-1 record, plays host to Abbotsford on Sunday, 7:15 p.m. at the Burnaby Winter Club.

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes.
