RCMP investigating Metrotown killing By Tereza Verenca

tverenca@burnabynow.com

Burnaby RCMP and the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) are investigating Burnaby’s first homicide of the year. On Tuesday night, just before 9 p.m.,

Mounties were called to the 6500 block of Telford Avenue to a two-storey walkup after a report of a “fight in progress,” according to a Burnaby RCMP press release. Police found a man in medical distress. Despite attempts to revive him, he succumbed to his injuries.

The victim has been identified as 47-year-old Jwada Hedar-Kadhim of Burnaby. “It is early in the investigation, but it does not appear to be a random act,” states the release. The scene will be cordoned off for a “significant amount of time,” according

Ex-student claims college misled students By Cayley Dobie

cdobie@burnabynow.com

A Burnaby woman is suing Douglas College alleging it misled students in the child, family and community studies Aboriginal stream program.

Agnes Tong is asking the college to repay her tuition fees, worth $1,732, and damages equal to tuition for time wasted plus court fees for a total of $3,700, according to court documents. Tong alleges she was told she would receive a certificate of com-

pletion upon completion of the eight-month program. It was her intention to use the credential in her job search. But when she completed the program in April 2016,Tong was issued an unofficial document that only recognized her attendance.

Douglas College denies it misled students. The college argues the information provided to prospective students of the Aboriginal stream program makes it clear it is “not a program for which students receive a Douglas College credential

upon completion.” The 16.5-credit, part-time program offers students an opportunity to learn directly from First Nations and Metis elders. Students attend classes twice a week for a total of four courses. There is Continued on page 5

Opinion now OUR VIEW

Thank you, dear readers, for 2017

Scrolling through the headlines of 2017 reminds us, yet again, of how important – no, make that vital – people are to the life of this city and this newspaper. The BurnabyNOW rolls into our 35th year in 2018, and it triggers a certain amount of reflection and pondering. From the beginning, Burnaby has had a mixed relationship with newspapers. Several came and went before the BurnabyNOW took root. Some focused on just South Burnaby, others

decided they could make a case for a North Burnaby paper. When our founders started this newspaper out of the ashes of the Daily Columbian, they decided we would be a paper for all of Burnaby. And we’ve held to that commitment. Every day someone in this city takes a call from one of our reporters, or takes the time to discuss their media needs with one of our advertising representatives. Every day the people in this city let us into their lives – whether it be on a very per-

sonal level or on a business level. The trust that readers and advertisers have shown us over the years has always kept us working hard. Simply said:We can’t do it without you. Now, that doesn’t mean that every day someone drops a bouquet of roses on our doorstep. No.We take our fair share of criticism – deserved or undeserved. We also don’t believe our job is to be unquestioning boosters of our city.We are not here to represent special

interests, or turn a blind eye to mistakes made with your tax dollars. We are, we hope, like an old best friend: someone who tells you like it is. Even when you won’t like it. But we are keenly aware that we can only do our jobs with the trust and readership of our community. We are also keenly aware that that trust is earned on a story-by-story and advertisement-by-advertisement basis. Many of our news leads are phoned in, emailed in,

or told to a reporter that someone bumps into during an assignment. Our advertising representatives know that businesses expect results, and the BurnabyNOW continues to deliver customers in print and online. The media is facing a sea change nowadays. We live on the web, on Facebook, and Twitter as well as in print. The “newspaper” is really just a term that applies to the business of journalism and advertising – not just a physical paper.

There’s no question that 2018 will bring fresh challenges for all of us – and particularly for those of us in the “newspaper” industry. We’re here to continue the simple, but precious, tradition of sharing your stories, asking the hard questions, and supporting success in our community. We thank you for reading us in 2017.We are grateful that you continue to reach out to us and rely on us for local news that matters in Burnaby.

Electoral costs are piling up

There are some ongoing costs attached to the NDP government’s various electoral-reform initiatives, and a lot of them are piling up in Elections B.C.’s budget. The independent office got its $10.4-million operating budget approved last month by the legislature’s finance committee. It also won approval for another $3.4 million in event-related expenditures in the coming fiscal year. But the office served notice it would need more money to cover other new functions once the costs are figured out.

… the office served notice it would need more money

The increase is needed to cover additional work the office is taking on as a result of campaign-finance reform and the upcoming referendum on changing the voting system to some kind of proportional-representation model. Those costs are on top of the hidden cost of minority government. Elections B.C. is spending much more than it normally would in the year after an election to keep the system at a much higher degree of readiness. The NDP holds power by virtue of an agreement with the three-member B.C.

Green caucus. Any loss of a confidence vote could trigger an immediate election. That would triple the budget right away, as the May election cost $36.5 million. The office’s budget submission said Elections B.C. “will ensure a full team of district electoral officers and deputies is appointed, and directed to carry out readiness preparations as required. We must ensure that information systems and election supplies are ordered, stocked in the warehouse, and are ready to be deployed throughout the province.” The office budgeted $1.7 million for preparedness in the coming year. Some of it is for costs that would be incurred in any event but are being budgeted much earlier. But about $850,000 of it is from additional expenses attributed to the minority situation and the need to keep various systems ready and a core group of returning-office staff on hand and ready. The readiness budget for the years after is yet to be determined. Elections B.C. also outlined $1.7 million in expected new costs to administer new campaign-financing restrictions in the local elections in November. Legislation in the fall banned union and corporate donations in local politics as well as provincial. It also imposed a $1,200 limit on individual donations in Continued on page 7

Bleak year for school board A shortfall of about $2 million in the Burnaby school district’s operating grant meant a grim round of budget cuts or deficit financing, according to school board chair Anne Smith in April. The district’s woes were stemming in part from a predicted decline in enrolment of about 100 to 300 students, meaning a lower operating grant from the province, plus increased costs for WCB and other challenges.

Citynow Moms’ group spreads Christmas cheer in city TerezaVerenca HERE & NOW

tverenca@burnabynow.com

Kudos to a Burnaby mom who successfully raised $3,000 to help a dozen families at Christmas. In November, Jodelene Weir launched a hamper program through the Burnaby Mommy Group on Facebook (Weir is the group’s administrator). She wanted to raise enough money to give each needy family $200 in grocery gift cards before the holidays. “In 21 days, the funds, 150-plus new and used items were collected, along with fresh food from several meal-kit delivery companies (Fuud, HelloFresh, Batch & iMeal) and sorted at Lochdale Hall in North Burnaby (rental fee was waived for this non-profit function),” Weir wrote in an email to the NOW. “As expected, the families receiving hampers were overwhelmed by the generosity of the community and responded with words of gratitude. One mom wrote, ‘My family is so grateful to everyone who made our Christmas extra special this year.We have really been struggling, and this hamper took all the stress off our shoulders so we can focus on our family during the holidays.’” Hampers were dropped off on Dec. 13. Great job, Jodelene! NON-PROFITS GET FINANCIAL BOOST Two local charities are the recipients of the net proceeds from last year’s RCMP Musical Ride.

Honour House Society and Burnaby Neighbourhood House each received $5,000, according to the Dec. 4 city council agenda. The RCMP Musical Ride was held at Swangard Stadium on Aug. 18 – the second time in Burnaby’s history. The ride tours throughout Canada and internationally between May and October, performing at about 40 venues each year.

My family is so grateful to everyone who made our Christmas extra special this year.

Thirty-three horses perform as riders execute a variety of cavalry drills choreographed to music. “The sold-out event was a great success and over 4,400 people attended,” reads a report from Dave Ellenwood, the city’s director of parks, recreation and cultural services. The Burnaby event also featured performances by the RCMP E Division

Pipes & Drums, Grupo Axé Capoeira, the singing of O Canada by Karis Ducharme, as well as many public safety and crime prevention displays. ENCOURAGING KIDS TO PLAY SAFE A Burnaby teen was part of last month’s Santa Claus parade in Vancouver. Zachary Leach, 17, was tasked with telling kids “spot the danger before you play” as part of The War Amps float. Leach was born a lefthand amputee, and is part of The War Amps child amputee program. “Through his role as a safety ambassador, he encourages kids to be aware of road signs and moving vehicles in their neighbourhoods. Zachary is well qualified to pass on the PLAYSAFE message as he knows what it is like to live without a limb and has met children who have lost limbs in accidents that could have been prevented,” reads a press release. Way to go, Zachary. Do you have an item for Here & Now? Send ideas to TerezaVerenca, tverenca@ burnabynow.com, or find her on Twitter, @tverenca.

jmaclellan@burnabynow.com

Do you know a boy who loves to sing? The British Columbia Boys Choir celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2018 and is looking for 50 new boys in Greater Vancouver to join the choir. The 50th anniversary singing program is open to boys aged nine to 12 who have excelled in music. They can be nominated by music teachers (both school teachers and private teachers). The choir will rehearse Wednesdays at 6 p.m. from Jan. 10 to Feb. 24 at Deer Lake School in Burnaby. Registration and nomination forms are available at www.bcboyschoir.org or by calling 1-888-909-8282. GALLERY SHOW OPENING Art lovers, don’t forget to head over to Deer Lake Gallery next weekend for the opening of the first exhibition of 2018. An opening reception is set for noon on Saturday, Jan. 13 to unveil Bodies of Salt, a solo show by artist Amanda Smart. Smart grew up on the Sunshine Coast, where she first discovered her love of painting and nature. After travelling and living in South America, she moved back to Vancouver, where she attended Emily Carr University of Art + Design. Smart works primarily in traditional oils and has developed a realistically inclined style with “hints of dreaminess and ethereality,” as a press release notes. “Amanda aims to explore our natural surroundings while at the same time composing comparisons to our own experiences and conditions as humans,” the release says. “Amanda hopes

to continue to use her commitment to her painting as a way to study, learn and explore where we live and our relationships to that.” Deer Lake Gallery is at 6584 Deer Lake Ave.The gallery is open Tuesdays to Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m., with free admission and parking. Call 604-2987322 or see www.burnaby artscouncil.org. THE ELIXIR OF LOVE Burnaby residents will be among those taking to the stage when Vancouver Opera presents Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore this month. Pi Theatre and the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival are presenting the English Canadian premiere of David Greig’s The Events, running Jan. 17 to 28 at the Russian Hall in Vancouver. The play, directed by Richard Wolfe with a musical score by John Browne, was inspired by the 2011 attacks in Utoya, Norway, when 69 people were killed at a summer camp. Rather than focusing on the violence, however, the production centres around Claire (played by Luisa Jojic), a female priest and choirmaster, who struggles to understand the event that changed her life. Douglas Ennenberg plays six characters opposite her. The production features a different community choir each night – with the choir serving as spectator and performer as the singers represent the community and share both songs of their own choosing and those composed especially for the production. In total, more than 220 community members from 12 choirs will be part of the show’s run. Burnaby’s Connie Hosie has designed the costumes for the production, having previously worked on Pi Theatre’s Long Division. Arts Council grant and money she fundraised herself, is spearheading The MariaClara Project, which is exploring the idea of what it means to be a Filipino woman. A press release notes that, as a Filipina herself, Gamboa is

working to address the implications of gentility and softness associated with womanly ideals in the Philippines – while she, as part of a younger generation, sees the benefits of strength. “She seeks to reconcile these two opposing images and create a dialogue around a new type of feminine identity for the Filipino woman,” the release notes.

She plans to wok with 25 other Filipino women to address the question of identity, creating movement that expresses their celebration of being Filipina. New year brings a chance to reflect on life DavidicusWong

HEALTHWISE

editorial@burnabynow.com

When we’re young, New Year’s Eve is another good reason to have a party but as we age, it may no longer seem such a big deal – just another night signifying the passage of time. The new calendar can just signify the passage of time. This Christmas, one of my favourite families of patients gave me an hourglass. For those of you too young to have ever owned a watch (because your phone always tells you the time), the hourglass was once the timepiece of choice between the sundial and the clock. The hourglass vividly illustrates the unstoppable flow of time as the grains of sand stream from the upper to lower spheres. It reminds me of the power of gravity and time. Older patients referring to changes in their skin and body contours often ask, “Is this due to age?” I comfort them, telling them, “It’s due to sunshine and gravity … over time.” At some point in your life – well, midlife, you will notice that the sand in the upper sphere has become ever smaller in proportion to the mound in the sphere of past time. You have lived most of your life, and the years ahead are numbered. When we’re young, we are

Happy new year: The beginning of a new year is more than just an excuse for a party. It’s a chance to review your life – to look back over the year that’s just passed and to look ahead to the new year and decide how you’ll spend your time. PHOTOS UNSPLASH, PIXABAY

energized by our dreams. It seems we have unlimited time to achieve them. As we age, time seems to move more quickly. It really doesn’t. Time becomes more precious. We must use what remains more wisely. We create the list – the bucket list – the places we’d love to see, the activities we’ve always wanted to do and the crucial words we must say.We long to become the person we were each meant to be. When I became a parent, I started a NewYear’s tradition. With three busy children, we recorded on our kitchen calendar the schedule for school, sports, music and dance lessons, din-

ners, shows and other family events. Before tossing out the old calendar in the NewYear, we would walk through its well-worn pages remembering the school concerts, movies, parties and graduations – the activities and milestones that we have lived together. Though this is an annual tradition, I am always amazed with what we have done and how much happens in just one year. But the passage of time – the living of our lives – is so much more than the busyness of our activities. The most important part of our year-end ritual is the reflection. What have we learned?

What did we enjoy? What did we survive? How did we help others, and how were we helped?

How did we help others, and how were we helped?

In answering these questions, we come to appreciate how we have endured and grown from challenging experiences. We are always learning. We may be rewarded with success but at other times, we learn from our failures and mistakes. With gratitude, we re-

member who has helped us along the way – those who have been our constant companions, reminding us that we are never alone and those who have given support when it was most needed. Remembering how we have helped others, strengthens our identity as being connected to a greater whole. Recognizing that time is precious – the hours in a day and days in a year are limited, how will we allot our time in the coming year? What will we do more of (the activities that give the greatest value)? What should we do less (activities that bring less value)? What should we eliminate from each day’s activities

(those things that give little value and are really a waste of time)? What can we create (something new that will transform our lives)? This is your year. This is your day. What will you do with your time? FREE HEALTH TALK Dr. DavidicusWong will be giving a free public talk, WhatYou Should Know About Diabetes at the Tommy Douglas branch of the Burnaby Public Library at 7311 Kingsway (near Edmonds) at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 16.To reserve your spot, register in person, by phone (604-522-3971) or online. 2017 IN PHOTOS Snap chat: Burnaby NOW photographers caught some of the best moments in sports with their lens, including, from clockwise starting at top, Byrne Creek senior boys basketball at the provincials; the St. Thomas More Knights senior football team paying homage to their coach Bernie Kully, who passed away a week before their win over Terry Fox; the Simon Fraser University volleyball team guarding the net; a district high school steeplechase race; and Mountain United under-17 girls against Metro-Ford.

Track, curling and hockey athletes among those to be inducted

When it comes to classic Canadian experiences, the Burnaby Sports Hall of Fame’s class of 2017 has it covered. From an immigrant who found track and field stardom on Burnaby Mountain to native-born players in curling and hockey circles, the athletes chosen for induction this year are a special group. Ruky Abdulai, Bryan Miki and Wayne Van Dorp all reached a pinnacle in their chosen sport. Abdulai gained fame for setting 17 NAIA track and field records and represented Canada at the 2008 Summer Olympics. But her storied journey began in her native Ghana, where she established herself as a rising star. However, a dream to live and compete in a peaceful country led her to Burnaby Mountain, where an email from Simon Fraser University’s Brit Townsend appealed to her. Along the way Abdulai found family, friends and success in track and field, taking Canadian citizenship and representing her adopted country in Beijing. Born and raised in Burnaby, Miki learned the intricacies of curling from his father, Fuji. As second with the Greg McAulay rink, Miki was a large part of the 2000 Brier men’s national championship team, that went on to win the world title in Scotland. A product of Burnaby Minor Hockey, Van Dorp enjoyed an extensive pro hockey career that saw him play 125 NHL games for Edmonton, Pittsburgh, Chicago and Quebec, realizing a childhood dream of winning a Stanley Cup as a member of the Oilers in 1987. Among the fraternity of NHL enforcers,Van Dorp gained respect while compiling 12 goals and 12 assists, as well as 565 penalty minutes. The 1987 Cliff Avenue United Football Club’s under-16 squad will be enshrined in the team category. The North Burnaby group, coached by Scott Ormiston, overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit to win the Canadian u-16 championship in overtime. The list of inductees also includes a pair in the builder’s category:Val Roche – considered one of the early Burnaby minor lacrosse activists, while also involved in soccer and boxing; and John Stockdale – a North Burnaby boy who, as executive director at B.C.Water Polo, co-authored numerous technical manuals, coordinated courses and developed high performance programs for female athletes. Two new members will be enshrined for their coaching contributions: Shelley Howieson (soccer), who was Simon Fraser University’s women’s soccer head coach from the program’s inception in 1988 until her retirement in 2013. Her teams won NAIA national titles in 1996 and 2000, and she was inducted into the Continued on page 25

Burnaby skater eager for second spin In her second senior nationals, Sarah Tamura is glad to skate before friends, family By Dan Olson

dolson@burnabynow.com

A new year offers new opportunities. For Burnaby’s Sarah Tamura, it also offers new experiences. The Champs International Skating Centre skater has done her work and remains focused on next week’s Canadian Tire national skating championships in Vancouver, which kick off Monday. For Tamura and fellow Champs clubmate Kelsey Wong, the opportunity to compete against the likes of world championship medallists Kaetlyn Osmond and Gabrielle Daleman is truly exciting. “I think just being able to compete with the top skaters it definitely gives you a bunch of motivation and desire to want to be like them,” said Tamura. “Just seeing them makes you want to be a better skater.” That’s been the focus for Tamura ever since she first laced on the white boots. A one-time novice national champion and

the 2015 junior champ, she heads into next week’s nationals as a second-year veteran, after debuting with a strong fifth showing last winter. “From last year it was pretty much a learning experience. Taking from that, I feel I’m more confident going into this, my second national championship as a senior,” she said. “I’m just taking last year’s experience and looking to build from it and improve on it.” That fifth-place result secured her spot on the national team, and opened doors for more international competition. Last March, she finished 17th at the ISU World Junior figure skating championships in Taipei, and admits the year had its share of valleys and peaks. “There were a lot of ups and downs; some really good moments and some not so good moments,” she said. “I feel overall 2017 was a big learning year for me. I wouldn’t be able to say it was my best year, but I wouldn’t say it was my worst year. I just feel it was a really

good learning year. I learned a lot from it and from that I feel I can build on to make 2018 a really good year for me.” It all starts with a rare opportunity at home – a rarity since becoming one of the up-andcoming young national stars. Drawing the fourth spot among the 18 senior skaters means her first program will come early in the proceedings and allow her to conquer the competition nerves quickly. “You know, around the rink we like to say every spot is a good spot. I think fourth is a really good spot. “Definitely, every time I go out on the international stage you obviously get more experience. Just going to those competitions I feel like, leading up to the nationals, it gives me so much motivation, momentum and confidence.” As a junior,Tamura competed internationally at a handful of competitions the past three years, including placing 13th at the ISU Junior world championships in Hungary, and capturing

her division title at the Bavarian Open 11 months ago. Adjusting to the senior circuit has meant altering her preparation, but mostly pushing her mental game. “I’m changing and trying to improve on being a better, stronger skater like how a senior skater skates,” said the 16-year-old. “That was kind of a challenge but I feel I’m getting into the groove and I finally found out and learned how to be more of a senior skater. “The elements are pretty much the same, but just the way you execute everything has to be way more perfect and poised as at juniors. The speed across the ice and everything has to be much more mature.” It puts next week’s competition as a perfect place to deliver her best performance yet. “I want to skate two of my best programs and I don’t want to have any regrets after it. I just want to be realy proud of myself. My ultimate goal is to be topthree in Canada and make it to the Olympics.”

SFU’s Swant sets fast pace

Closing out the year on a great note, the Simon Fraser University women’s basketball team bested the University of Alaska 73-49 last week. Led by Sophie Swant’s double-double, the Clan broke a 31-31 stalemate with a powerful third quarter. A 22-4 run by SFU put the home team in control, after Alaska had started with 10 of the frame’s first 14 points. A third-year player, Swant scored 12 points in the first

quarter and finished with 21 on the day, adding 10 rebounds and going three-ofseven from beyond the arc. Freshman Jessica Jones contributed 17 points and three assists, while Kendal Sands chipped in 11 points. It was the team’s first win of the season in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action, after three losses. SFU’s record improved to 6-6 overall. After a two-game trip to Oregon, SFU returns home Jan. 11 to play St. Martin’s.
