JERSEYS FOR HUMBOLDT: HOCKEY STUDENTS PAY TRIBUTE TO BRONCOS
When words fail, jerseys speak Cornelia Naylor
cnaylor@burnabynow.com
Hockey players in the Burnaby school district were among thousands of Canadians across the country who donned jerseys Thursday to show support for the victims of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash. The Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team was headed to Nipawin, Sask. for a playoff game on April 6, when the team bus collided with a semi-truck at a remote intersection. Sixteen passengers have died and 13 others were injured. #JerseysforHumboldt, an initiative started by a group of B.C. hockey parents, saw people across Canada wear hockey jerseys to school and work Thursday in support of the community. “It’s just a sense of solidarity and that sense of brotherhood,” said Maco Balkovec, director of an elite hockey academy based at Burnaby Central Secondary and coach of its midget prep team. “We’re all competing against each other, but we’re all in this really together, and I think it’s a good example of community coming together and people supporting other people in good times and bad.” All three teams in the Grade8-to-12 academy came to school wearing their academy jerseys, joining many other students and staff across the district who wore hockey jerseys of all kinds. Balkovec said the tragedy has Continued on page 8

Citynow ANTI-PIPELINE ACTION
Protesters stand aside for truck entry
Continued protests expected at gates on Friday, Saturday Lauren Boothby
lboothby@burnabynow.com
Protests resumed at Burnaby’s Trans Mountain terminal Thursday for the first time since Kinder Morgan announced work on the pipeline would stop. The protest resulted in three arrests for violating the injunction. But when trucks needed to leave and enter the facility, protesters moved out of the way. Following a procession from the soccer field near Forest Grove Park, past the Tsleil-Waututh watch house, protesters blocked the entrance to the terminal, standing within the five-metre zone covered by Kinder Morgan’s injunction.Three artists were arrested just before 11 a.m., receiving a civil charge for standing in the injunction zone. But when police asked protesters to move so workers could leave the facility, they complied. Some 30 people who had been blocking the entrance but were not within the five-metre zone moved to allow trucks to leave. Minutes later, three trucks arrived to enter the facility, causing a commotion in the crowd. One protester, who would not give his name, stood in front of the trucks, saying they had agreed to move to let employees exit, not to let trucks come in. He was approached by police. “Leaving and entering are two different things,” he said to the officers who approached him. “They

were waiting around the corner.” “They were down the street, you knew that,” the officer replied. The man appeared visibly upset as he blocked the trucks from entering. “They mentioned that people are leaving, but they didn’t say anything about entering,” he told
the NOW. He did not respond to a question about why he decided to move, and he was called away by organizers of the demonstration. The organizers appeared to have advised protesters to move when asked by police. “I know it was really difficult
to watch the work they are doing continuing to be done,” Greenpeace activist Mary Lovell told protesters after the trucks passed. “The only reason why I was hoping for people to stay on the side is not because I don’t want people to take action, but because I didn’t feel that people under-
stood that they may get arrested without understanding that they were going to.” Protect the Inlet has protests organized today (Friday) and Saturday.
‘People’s injunction’ orders a halt to pipeline work Lauren Boothby
lboothby@burnabynow.com
Residents of the Forest Grove andWestridge neighbourhoods are signing a “people’s injunction,” hoping to bar Kinder Morgan from continuing work on the pipeline in Burnaby. Burnaby Residents Opposing Kinder Morgan Expansion (BROKE) and the Justin Trudeau Brigade – a group that staged demonstrations outside the Westridge Marine Terminal at the end of last year – are hosting a ceremony to have others add their names to the document. Organizers say they’ve collected 150 names so far. A potluck and strategy
session will follow. The ceremony is on Saturday at the Parish of St. Timothy in Burnaby (4550 Kitchener St.) from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m.The group is inviting residents to brainstorm how they want to go forward, including continued protests. The document outlines reasons residents are opposed to the pipeline expansion, including safety concerns of building additional tanks, removal of trees contrary to Burnaby’s bylaws, environmental risks to Burnaby’s conservation areas and the Burrard Inlet, and the lack of consent from the City of Burnaby and Tsleil-Waututh, Squamish and Musqueam nations.
The document – which has no legal force – orders Kinder Morgan and any affiliated companies to halt work on the pipeline expansion project and at Burnaby terminals, including removing trees, obliging police to arrest protesters, and threatening civil action and damages against protesters. “We, the citizens ofVancouver and Burnaby and residents ofWestridge neighbourhood, are by signing this declaration empowering ourselves to take such action to enforce it as will be decided by us in free and open discussion,” reads the document. Earle Peach of the Justin Trudeau Brigade said the group spoke to some 300
residents, many adding additional reasons they do not support the project. He said many neighbours may oppose the pipeline but may not know how to proceed with protests. That could include legal action. “It’s not an injunction per se, but it’s expressing the will of a group of people, and it’s instructing the object of the injunction, Kinder Morgan, to stop what they’re doing,” he told the NOW. Members of the Justin Trudeau Brigade were named in Kinder Morgan’s injunction preventing protests at the Burnaby terminals and prohibiting protesters from coming within five metres of the entrances.

People interested in attending Saturday’s event should bring food to share at the potluck. Following the signing event, there will be a strategy session for community members to discuss
how they want to move forward. For more information, find the event hosted by Justin Trudeau Brigade on Facebook, or email earlepeach@yahoo.ca.

Car dealer fights ban in court Kingsway used car dealer is protesting a 10-year prohibition after an investigation found it was selling unsafe vehicles Cornelia Naylor
cnaylor@burnabynow.com
A Burnaby used-car dealer slapped with a 10-year ban for selling unsafe cars, “willfully” disobeying orders from the province’s auto sales regulator and trying to mislead one of its hearings is fighting back in B.C. Supreme Court. Recognizable by the fake, neon-coloured palm trees that adorned its lot at Kingsway and Imperial Street, Best Imports Auto Ltd. was first investigated last July after repeated customer complaints it was selling unsafe vehicles, according to court documents. Five out of six vehicles examined by the Vehicle Sales Authority of B.C. and the Ministry of Transportation’s commercial vehicle safety enforcement division (CVSE) during a July 17 inspection were found to have safety violations. Investigators also found vehicles described as in “excellent running condition” with “low kilometres” that were, in fact, rebuilt salvage vehicles – one with 240,532 km on it. After the investigation, the dealership was ordered not to put the vehicles that had failed the inspection up for sale again until they had passed a safety inspection, but a followup inspection a month later found the vehicles (ranging in price from $3,800 to $23,800) were still up for sale without having been inspected. And none of the dealership’s ads or lot signs warned buyers those vehicles were “not suitable for transportation.” After the July inspection, the dealership had also been ordered to get all its vehicles inspected by a red seal mechanic or designated inspection facility and to provide customers with copies of inspection reports. The sales authority’s followup inspection, however, found the vehicles had in-
stead undergone a cheaper, less thorough inspection at an auto shop that was not designated and didn’t have a red seal mechanic – and not all customers were getting copies of inspection reports for cars bought at Best Imports. Two former managers, Mathew Anvari and Hamid Mirmotahari, told a sales authority hearing in late September and early October it had been the dealership’s practice not to inspect the vehicles it sold. Both managers said it was Best Imports owner Bob Shokohi who directed policy at the dealership. Anvari, the manager after the initial inspection, also said he had arranged to have the vehicles inspected at a designated shop with a red seal mechanic, but Shokohi had told him to use the cheaper garage. Ian Christman, registrar of motor dealers, had harsh words for Best Imports and Shokohi in a ruling Nov. 28, characterizing their actions as “reckless” and “deliberate.” He pinned the blame squarely on Shokohi, describing him as the “directing mind” of the operation and saying the actions of the business reflected on him personally. In his ruling, Christman also raised concerns about Shokohi’s conduct during the hearing, saying he had attempted to mislead the registrar more than once. When asked who owned the property Best Imports was on, for example, Shokohi had said it was owned by a foreigner whose name he didn’t know, when, in fact, the property was owned by his son, Mehran Shokohi Manesh. Christman concluded Best Imports was “ungovernable” and revoked the business’s motor dealer registration. While the Motor Vehicle Act would technically allow the company to reapply for registration any time,
Christman said he would not consider an application from Best Imports or Shokohi for another decade. “Given my finding that Best Import is ungovernable, attempted to mislead the hearing, and willfully disobeyed orders from its
regulator and the Ministry of Transportation, I would set a time of 10 years before I would even accept an application and consider registering Best Import as a motor dealer,” Christman wrote. Continued on page 8

Opinion now OUR VIEW
How can we find words when there aren’t any? Dear Humboldt, We wish we knew what to say. We wish there were magic words that could somehow make this all make sense, that could bring peace and healing to a community torn apart by grief and loss. There are no such words. So we’re doing the very, very little that we can to show you that you’re in our thoughts and in our hearts. We’re wearing our jerseys.
We’re putting our hockey sticks out on our porches. We’re lighting candles and saying prayers. We’re standing shoulder to shoulder with our family members, our teammates, our colleagues to pay tribute to the 16 lives that were lost in that one tragic accident – and to those loved ones who now have to figure out how to pick up the pieces of their lives and carry on. We’re thinking of you all.
We wish there were magic words that could somehow make this all make sense … We didn’t know these young men whose futures were so bright. We don’t know the mothers and fathers who sent them off on the team bus to play the sport they loved –
and who couldn’t, in their worst dreams, have imagined they would never see those sons again. We don’t know the ripples these deaths have sent, and will continue to send,
through your community. How many plans have been halted. How many tears have been shed. How many hearts have been broken. How many lives have been irrevocably, cruelly changed. We only know that fate can be volatile. That in another place, on another day, these could have been our sons, our brothers, our neighbours and teammates and friends. So we cry with you. And
we send our photos and tweets and Facebook messages out into the universe in the hopes that somehow, some way, our collective love and support will ease your grief, just a little. We don’t know you, Humboldt. But right now, we are all here for you. Love, Canada #HumboldtStrong

Public service is in decline
A former town councillor from Penhold, Alta. named Danielle Klooster wrote a widely read op-ed a few years back titled “5 terrible reasons to run for municipal office” that I would urge every person thinking of running for mayor or city council to read and understand before entering politics. In her piece, Klooster also describes why anyone should consider running for public office at all. You should seek elected office, she writes, “because you wish to serve your community, to provide good leadership, to plan and build for the future. You should run because you have a contribution to make, ideas to be shared, passion that won’t abate and a commitment to do the right thing no matter what.” Then she adds, “you should run if you understand that you will have to sacrifice popularity and family time, and that you will have to sometimes make decisions that benefit the community as a whole but don’t benefit you personally.” What Klooster does not say, however, is that you should run because of the paycheque. The recent actions of local government politicians – in particular Metro Vancouver board chair Greg Moore and deputy-chair Raymond Louie – have put being a mayor, city councillor or a Metro Vancouver board member into a hard light. Is elected office about serving the public, or is it about the remuneration and
the travel perks you receive? Through their public statements and their actions, Louie, Moore and many of their colleagues have signalled they view public life as the latter. The chair and his deputy have recently returned from their taxpayer-funded Australia junket, billed as a transit system “learning tour.” According to Moore this is a trip where he mixed in a little vacation time, telling a reporter he would add a stop to the Great Barrier Reef – presumably to “learn” about coral. According to The Province newspaper, Moore has racked up more than $80,000 in travel expenses since 2013, jetting around to nearly 20 global destinations including Paris and London. This the same Greg Moore, by the way, who announced – via a statement issued (inappropriately in my view) on the City of Port Coquitlam’s website – that he is not seeking reelection in October. Can someone help us to understand the value of flying low-level public officials to far-flung destinations? These trips burn through tens or hundreds of thousands of your tax dollars each year. In a recent interview,West Vancouver Mayor Michael Smith was apoplectic over the duo’s latest Aussie junket. “I think it was last year Louie and Moore went to Ecuador for a conference. These travel expenses are never brought to the board Continued on page 7

Star booking disrupts nuptials
Musician Sarah McLachlan played havoc with a Burnaby couple’s wedding plans. Promoters had tentatively booked the Shadbolt Centre for a Sept. 14 concert by the Canadian star but eventually decided onVancouver’s Nat Bailey Stadium instead. Kim Ishikawa and fiance Rod MacDonell, meanwhile, had also booked the arts centre for their wedding that day and cancelled just weeks before, fearing the concert would ruin their nuptials. Despite the venue being available after McLachlan’s cancellation, the couple said they had no intention of rebooking.

Lettersnow Pooping pooch story was inappropriate at best Dear Editor: Re: Protesters’ pooping pooch provokes police, Burnaby NOW, Friday, April 6. Is this the best you can do? “… a dog takes a dump in the lobby …” Are you, Ms. Naylor, a graduate of a journalism program? Did they not teach you to write about such acts using more appropriate terminology without completely appalling this reader, and I am sure many more, with your poor writing and thus descriptive skills? While the act of the animal and the lack of care and attention by the owner to be responsible was designed to provoke the police and others during the protest, it is inappropriate to describe it in such a way. Cathy Griffin, by email
Run for office because you want to serve your city Continued from page 6 for approval and there is no explanation why they need to go. And there is no subsequent report coming to the board what came out of the conference,” commented Smith. Of course, this travel brouhaha follows Louie and Moore’s full-throated defence of a “retirement allowance” (retroactive to 2007) for board members who leave office either voluntarily or with the help of voters.
If the board fails to rescind that allowance, Moore stands to earn a $65,000 lump sum payment. Speaking at Metro Vancouver, Raymond Louie argued for the back-dated “pension” scheme by saying, “Part of the attraction and retention of getting people to come to this table … is to ensure that they are appropriately compensated.” As Louie and Moore have, municipal officials all over the province are voting themselves pay increases, mostly arguing that they are not paid enough. The stipend that municipal officials receive is for their time spent preparing for and attending meetings. Being a city councillor was never intended to be a full-time position, yet these positions have become filled with career politicians who hold seats for 10, 20 and sometimes more than 30 years. The constant increases in pay and perks explains why we see so little turnover in local government. The very idea serving the public is being extinguished by self-interest. As Klooster says, run for office because you want to abide your passion for your community, not because you want a job. Those seeking municipal office should have a plan for what you want to accomplish in that role and – importantly – have a plan to get out. City now ‘It’s really hit close to home’ Continued from page 1 sparked an outpouring of support across the country, in part because long bus rides are so much a part of Canadian kids’ experience playing hockey and other sports. “Those bus rides are a huge part of the bonding experience for boys and girls
that are playing,” he said. As a parent and as a coach of players just making their first forays into long team trips as they pursue their hockey dreams, Balkovec’s voice broke as he talked about the tragedy. “All of our boys that are aspiring to play – and with the NHL playoffs open-
ing this weekend, everybody dreams of playing there one day and hoisting the Stanley Cup – to see these boys have their dreams and their lives taken away from them in such a tragic fashion, I think it’s really hit close to home,” he said. “I’m getting emotional even talking about it right now.”

Hearing in court next week
Continued from page 5 “Additionally, I would set the same time bar against any motor dealer application in which Mr. Bob Shokohi is involved.” Shokohi, however, has called the decision “procedurally unfair” and has petitioned B.C. Supreme Court to have it quashed and a new hearing called or the penalty reconsidered. In his petition, Shokohi argues the 10-year timeline really amounts to a lifetime ban for him because he is 80 years old. The ban would effectively shut down his primary source of income, some
of which he uses to pay for a full-time caregiver for his wife, who has severe Alzheimer’s disease, according to the petition. The petition also calls it “problematic” the registrar concluded Shokohi showed “willful disregard” for the sales authority’s conditions when the owner had left for Iran to be with a dying sister the day after they were imposed and left Anvari in charge. Shokohi further argues he wasn’t given sufficient notice of the hearing and that it was an “unreasonable and unsupportable leap of logic” to conclude Shoko-
hi was misleading the registrar when he said he didn’t know who owned the property the car lot was on and that it was owned by a foreigner. “Even if there was a contradiction on this point, it did not amount to misleading the registrar on any material fact as the ownership of the property was irrelevant and immaterial to the issues in the hearing,” states the petition. A two-day chambers judicial review hearing into the matter is scheduled in B.C. Supreme Court for April 17 and 18.

Coach won’t stand trial on charges of child pornography Child porn charges discharged, but voyeurism charges will proceed Cornelia Naylor
cnaylor@burnabynow.com
Child pornography charges against a youth sports coach with ties to Burnaby have been discharged but voyeurism charges against him will go ahead. Randy Downes, a Coquitlam resident and Lower Mainland hockey and baseball coach since the 1990s, spent time as a coach with Burnaby Winter Club. He was arrested and charged with multiple counts of voyeurism and making and possessing child pornography in October 2016, following what RCMP said was a sixmonth investigation. At the conclusion of a preliminary hearing in B.C. provincial court in Port Coquitlam Monday, all five counts related to making and possessing child pornography were discharged. Criminal Justice Branch spokesperson Dan
McLaughlin told the NOW it’s the Crown’s job during such hearings to satisfy the court there is enough evidence to send the matter on to a trial. “In this case, the court concluded that that threshold had not been met and so the court declined to order him to stand trial on those charges,” he said. Four counts of voyeurism against Downes, however, will go ahead, with Downes scheduled to appear in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster on April 26 to fix a trial date. McLaughlin declined to comment on why – after a six-month police investigation and the approval of the charges – the child porn counts had been discharged. “As the matter remains before the court, the B.C. Prosecution Service will have no further comment,” he said. – with files from Gary McKenna,The Tri-City News

A Burnaby craft brewery is pumping out more beer than ever after installing a “state-of-the-art” canning line. Steamworks Brewery recently upgraded its canning line at its Burnaby facility. The new machinery can produce 15,000 cans of beer per hour – 10 times the number of cans Steamworks’ old line could fill, according to CEO Eli Gershkovitch. “We’ve found that more and more of the market is moving towards cans. It’s an interesting trend,” he told the NOW. “We re-
ally need to get higher speeds in order to keep up.” Steamworks’ old canning equipment produced about 1,500 cans an hour, which wasn’t sufficient, according to Gershkovitch. “It’s a nice problem to have that we’ve outgrown our original canning line,” he said. Steamworks has been canning some of its beers almost since it opened its Burnaby facility in November 2013. Currently, it puts out about a dozen beers – give or take a few depending on the season and what speciality brews they’ve got going – and, of those beers, more than half are available in cans. The company also ex-
ports a lot of its canned products, Gershkovitch said. “In the U.S., we’re exporting exclusively cans, same with Ontario,” he said. Last month, Premier John Horgan and Burnaby North MLA Janet Routledge stopped by the brewery to check out the new equipment in action. (Media were invited on the tour but weren’t allowed to ask the premier questions.) Gershkovitch said the new line, while helping to boost the company’s production, also frees up time for his staff. “I want my brewers to be focused on the finer aspects of brew-
ing rather than having to actuate a pump or open and close a valve,” he added.
It’s a nice problem to have that we’ve outgrown our original canning line
With the new canning line in operation and orders for Steamworks’ beers increasing from all
corners of the world (they’re popular in Europe, too), it’s possible that one day, they might outgrow the William Street facility – but that’s not something Gershkovitch is too concerned with just yet. “We’re very happy in this facility,” he said. “By being … resourceful, in terms of our planning, it’s our intention to be part of the Burnaby community for a long time.” Steamworks’ Burnaby brewery is located at 3845 William St. The taproom is open Sunday to Wednesday from noon to 10 p.m. and Thursday to Saturday from noon to 11 p.m. For more info, go to www.steamworks.com/brewery.

Entertainment now SPOTLIGHT ON
NATIONAL FILM DAY WHAT’S HAPPENING? Celebrate Canadian achievement on the big screen on National Canadian Film Day, Wednesday, April 18. The annual celebration shines a light on films about the Canadian experience made by Canadians, for Canadians. Everyone is encouraged to take part in one of the more than 700 free screenings planned across the country, including Burnaby. This year is all about women with Spotlight on Female Filmmakers. Reel Canada, the non-profit organization that runs National Canadian Film Day, has curated a 40film “sampler” for event organizers to choose from. Featured filmmakers and screenwriters include Deepa Mehta (Water, Bollywood/ Hollywood), Sandy Wilson (My American Cousin), Karen Walton (Ginger Snaps) and Mina Shum (Double Happiness). WHAT’S PLANNED FOR BURNABY? The Burnaby Public Library is hosting two screenings to celebrate National Canadian Film Day. At 3 p.m. catch Bollywood/Hollywood directed by Deepa Mehta. Bollywood/Hollywood is the story of a rich South Asian man from Toronto who hires an escort to accompany him to his
sister’s wedding after his family pressures him to find a nice Hindu girl to bring to the wedding. “Naturally, the two fall in love, and just as naturally, complications ensue,” reads an event description. At 6:30 p.m., see Maudie, based on the true story of Nova Scotia painter Maud Lewis, “who overcame the physical challenge of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis to become one of Canada’s best known and most loved folk artists.” The film stars Sally Hawkins and Ethan Hawke and is directed by Aisling Walsh. Both films screen at the Tommy Douglas library branch, 7311 Kingsway.
home. The folks at Reel Canada have arranged with networks including APTN, Corus, The Movie Network, Hollywood Suite, Family, OUTtv and Super Channel to broadcast Canadian movies all day long. Find the full broadcast schedule at canadianfilmday. ca/see-a-film/broadcastschedule. ANYTHING ELSE? Yes. Canadian movies are magical. So plan to go see a movie, maybe even two. It’ll
be worth it. “Film – more than any other medium – has the power to capture the soul of a nation, and when we only watch movies from somewhere else, we lose a part of ourselves. There’s nothing wrong with loving Hollywood films, but they’re no substitute for the connection you can feel when you watch something from your own backyard,” reads the release. For more info go to canadianfilmday.ca.

WHY SHOULD I TAKE PART? This is a great opportunity to expand your cinematic repertoire. What do you think of when you think of Canadian film? It’s more than just movies about American cousins or crosscountry journeys of selfdiscovery. DETAILS PLEASE. All National Canadian Film Day screenings are free. No registration is required for the Burnaby screenings. WHAT IF I DON’T FEEL LIKE GOING OUT? If you really can’t make one of the two showings in Burnaby, tune in at

Businessnow Fashion student takes inspiration from military Lauren Boothby
lboothby@burnabynow.com
One Burnaby fashion student hopes her new clothing line will help men stay both dry and stylish on their daily commute. Ho-Chi Huang is one of 32 Kwantlen Polytechnic University students who will be showcasing her designs at the Wilson School of Design’s 2018 The Show on April 19 and 20.The show includes collections for all genders, with designs that push social boundaries and stereotypes, with a focus on intent and function. Vert is the capstone project for fourth-year student Huang. She designed her fashion line of rain gear for men with high-tech, durable fabrics, with colours and designs inspired by military uniforms, particularly those from the Second World War. But for Huang, her interest in the military is more than just esthetic. “I had a strong connection and felt empathic to

their life experience, and appreciated their efforts and sacrifice that led to peace for descendants and generations to come,” she said in a statement. The army motif isn’t limited to the colour palette: how the clothing is structured and held together, from her use of vests, oversized pockets and a focus on ergonomic cuts, down to the smallest details on buckles and straps, are all part of the military theme. “I believe there is an increased need to create high performance, refined urban clothing, to protect com-

Chef Dez
ON COOKING editorial@burnabynow.com
Many consumers, without herb gardens of their own, will choose to purchase dried herbs more frequently than fresh due to cost and convenience. Dried herbs are suitable for certain recipe applications; however, there are just as many recipes that would benefit from fresh. Consequently, other than listening to your wallet, how should one discriminate choosing between them? Although fresh herbs seem to offer the most flavour, they are not a necessity for all recipes. Dried herbs need time and moisture to release their flavours and therefore are adequate in dishes that require a certain amount of cooking time to allow for this rehydration. Examples of these recipes would be ones such as pasta sauce, chili, soups or other stewed dishes. Fresh herbs can be used in these applications but are better suited being added at the end of the cooking process, as they can lose their potency if cooked for too long. Many people also use dried herbs in marinades and compound butters. Compound butters are combinations of herbs, sea-

sonings and flavourings combined with butter to create finishing touches to certain dishes. Garlic butter, for example, is probably the most recognizable compound butter. A large misconception with dried herbs, however, is that they last forever. They don’t.There are steps one can take to inhibit their deterioration, like storing them in a cool dark place, but eventually they will lose their pungency. Typically, I would suggest replacing dried herbs every eight to 12 months if stored properly. I have found that the bulk foods sections at the grocery stores are the best option for doing this economically. Get in the habit of only purchasing slightly more than what you need for a recipe. This will keep your home inventory low and your reci-
pes tasting better. Since the moisture (water content) has been removed from dried herbs, they are more potent (per measure) than fresh herbs. This is an important consideration when changing a recipe to accommodate the herbs you have on hand. The only herb that this rule is not applicable to is tarragon – it is more potent (per measure) in its fresh form. Given the choice to be stranded on a desert island with either herb form, I would obviously pick fresh for its versatility, nutrients, and fresh flavour. However, it is important to understand that dried herbs, when used and stored correctly, can play a vital role in our kitchens. Chef Dez is a chef, writer and host.Visit him at www. chefdez.com.

Communitynow Here’s why cross-training is critical for runners Christine Blanchette
RUN WITH IT editorial@burnabynow.com
When I first started running, adding any crosstraining to my workout regime wasn’t important. At the time, I thought running regularly five days a week was enough to improve my running or enhance my performance. Little did I know that incorporating some cross-training would have made me a stronger and healthier runner. I ended up getting an injury and tore my hamstring because of a poor core and overtraining. My physiotherapist suggested I pool run for six weeks and continue on when I returned to running. During that time I learned about the benefits of cross-training, and I found water running had given my legs a break. It was low impact and added variety to my workouts. These days I go to the gym and work on my core
strength. With the upcoming Vancouver Sun Run on April 22 and the beginning of marathon season, runners are gearing up and training for the big run and may not be including cross-training. In an email interview, Logan Dube, fitness manager at Steve Nash Fitness Club,
The more you do just one thing, the more your body becomes unbalanced.
shared some cross-training tips and advice. I asked how important it is to add cross-training to your running program. She says, “Crucial! Number 1, to prevent injury. Number 2 to improve performance (longer run stride, stronger legs, etc.).” Learning about new activities like pool running,
pilates and core exercises were a major benefit I found from cross-training. Dube also offered her thoughts about some of the benefits of cross-training. “Firstly, you’ve got a set distance. Then the consideration of how long it takes you to complete the race. Better stride length would mean less steps to complete the distance. Faster leg speed would mean finishing the race faster. Stronger core would mean more efficient use of the whole body and better biomechanics. Proper joint stability/mobility would reduce risk of injury or wear and tear on the body. “Running is one functional movement, and the more you do just one thing, the more your body becomes unbalanced. “Your running muscles might be strong (to the point of getting too strong, i.e. IT band issues, knee pain, hip pain, back pain), but the movements you don’t train are like the weak link in a chain – any athlete that works to improve/elim-

inate their weak links is a better athlete. They perform better, reduce risk of injury and can sustain the sport they love for longer. “And, if you’re stuck at a plateau (can’t run faster, can’t increase distance or nagging injuries), your
cross-training will help you make faster and more dramatic/effective improvements in your running.” Whether you are new or a seasoned runner, it is never too late to add cross-training to your workouts. It will improve your run-
ning and keep you in the game. Visit a personal trainer to get you on the right program. For more, see www.runwith it.ca or follow Christine on Twitter @christineruns.

these cleaning events in the spring and fall for nearly 15 years. Participants will take buckets and trash pickers along Edmonds Street and Kingsway, picking up the garbage that’s accumulated on and around the sidewalks and road over the last few months. Organizer Lindy McQueen said the cleanup is a good chance to meet the neighbours and the other non-profits who work in
the area. “People like to feel that they’re part of the community and keep it clean, and it shows some pride in their neighbourhood,” she said. “We generally do it every spring and fall, and there’s no lack of garbage. It just gets blown around in the wind. “We just like to keep the place clean.” Participants will start at Salisbury Avenue and King-

City now How to overcome your built-in negativity bias DavidicusWong HEALTHWISE
editorial@burnabynow.com
The human brain has a natural negativity bias. Regardless of how hard our parents and teachers may have tried to encourage us, our brains’ have evolved to tune in on the negative. This made sense in a savage world when danger lurked around the corner of the cave and we needed to fit in with the rest of the tribe. We were designed to detect potential danger. That’s why we notice what’s wrong – with our environment, with others and our selves. And that’s why almost every marriage – unless both partners work against this tendency – can degenerate into endless complaints and mutual dissatisfaction over time. Psychologists (and doctors) recommend that for every critical comment you make, you have to say five positive things to balance it out. This not only helps you see the best in the other per-
son (making you happier with the deal you have) but it makes the other feel more appreciated and happy as well. This goes for your own self-talk. If we allow our inner monologue of self-criticism to take hold, our mantras will be: “I’m not good enough”, “My life sucks” and “Something’s wrong with me.” Only after we have shone the light of compassion upon them, can we challenge these core beliefs and assumptions. One of the most common false assumptions is that we are completely separate individuals who have to compete and fight to get ahead. One of the key determinants of physical and emotional health – and therefore, happiness itself – is our sense of belonging – our connection with our community. Yet most of us go through our lives as distinctly separate individuals. Siblings compete with one another (as do spouses). We begin our lives in school focused on individu-
al achievement (or failure). In sports, we compete with an “us versus them” mindset. Competition spreads to every part of adult life.We compete for jobs to earn more and get ahead. We compete for our homes. We fight traffic in our daily commutes. What is traffic? Other people. We compete as we compare ourselves with others, and we judge others – just as we know others are judging us – by the clothes we wear, the cars we drive and the symbolic prestige of particular mundane items of utility – phones, shoes, purses and watches. When we follow this mainstream way of thinking, the natural conclusion is we all lose. By the end of this life, you will lose all you have gained. Everything you have built will one day be gone, and in a few generations, your name will be forgotten. What is the point of it all? The inescapable truth is this: you are not a separate, independent individual; you are a global citizen interde-
pendent with every other person on this planet.Your wellbeing is dependent on the wellbeing of others. The “me against the world” and “us versus them” story disconnects us from others and dehumanizes them; they become objects in the way or objects to be used. In reality, we have more in common with every other being on this planet than we realize. We each have hopes and dreams, pain and pleasure, joys and sorrows. We experience the same range of emotions and we are all subject to illness, misfortune, aging and death. We can unconsciously adopt maladaptive core beliefs and get stuck in narrowed points of view, yet we each have the capacity to change and grow. The big problems of our society and the world will never be solved by people – and countries – looking out for themselves. As long as we see one another as separate and competing individuals, we will continue to see abuse, crime, homelessness, hunger, terrorism and war.
Separation: The mindset of competition, with a focus on individual achievement or failure, carries with us through our lives from the classroom on, says Dr. Davidicus Wong. Wong says that mindset fails us when we forget that we are part of an interdependent, connected whole. PHOTO ISTOCK
When more of us realize our interdependence and connection with the global community and all life on this planet, we will see the positive evolution of humanity and life on Earth. It begins with us.Together . . . let us be . . . the change we
wish to see. Dr. DavidicusWong is a family physician. His Healthwise column appears regularly in this paper. For more on achieving your positive potential in life, see his website at www.davidicuswong.word press.com

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes.
