Another pedestrian dies on Highway 1 Cornelia Naylor
cnaylor@burnabynow.com
Emergency crews were called to Highway 1 in Burnaby last week for the second deadly pedestrian-involved crash in the area this year. First responders rushed to the westbound lanes of the highway by the Willingdon Overpass at about 8:10 a.m., according to assistant fire Chief Gavin Summers. A pedestrian had been struck and pinned beneath a car, he said, and efforts to revive them were unsuccessful. BC Highway Patrol said the pedestrian had tried to cross the highway. “The place where this happened, it’s not legal for pedestrians to cross,” spokesperson Cpl. Mike Halskov told the NOW. The driver involved in the collision remained at the scene, according to Halskov, but a vehicle that rear-ended that car took off, and investigators are hoping to speak to the second driver or anyone who
might have dashcam footage of the second vehicle. “With the volume of traffic around that portion of the highway at that time in the morning, I imagine there’s more than one person that’s got dashcam footage,” Halskov said. This is the second fatal pedestrian-involved collision on that stretch of the highway this year. On Jan. 29, a man in his 60s was hit when he tried to cross the six lanes of high-speed traffic. He was taken to hospital in critical condition and died several days later, according to Halskov. There have been homeless encampments in the area, and that man had had no fixed address, according to the highway patrol. But Halskov said the latest victim was not believed to be connected to the homeless camps. Anyone with information or dashcam video related to the latest crash is asked to call BC Highway Patrol in Burnaby at 604526-9744.

More than 1,200 new rentals planned for Lougheed Village While purpose-built market rental construction has been slow in recent years, Metro Vancouver condominium developers have started to pivot towards rental construction, according to Mark Goodman of Goodman Commercial, who publishes the Goodman Report. And one of the biggest pivots is in Burnaby, where a developer is looking at a massive rental development in the Lougheed area. The movement to rentals should not be surprising: sales of multi-family rental buildings are on a frantic pace this year, notching $1.64 billion worth of transactions through the first six months of 2021. First-half sales were
45% higher than the entire 2020 annual total and appear on pace to hit the third-highest annual sales volume ever recorded, according to Goodman. Starlight Developments announced an all-rental rezoning of Lougheed Village, comprising three additional concrete tower buildings with 1,200 new rental apartments. The developer is claiming the title of “largest rental housing development in Metro Vancouver” for its project. In all, Starlight Developments is planning its Lougheed Village development at Erickson Drive and Salish Court – near to but not part of the major City of Lougheed development at Lougheed mall. With 1,200 new units

planned for the development, Lougheed Village is expected to house a total of 1,728 units, with the
site already home to 528 rental suites in four highrise towers. The three new tow-
ers are expected to reach 48, 39 and 36 storeys, according to Starlight, and the existing buildings have been renovated in recent years. “What makes this project significant is not just the addition of 1,200 new rental suites, but also the preservation of 528 existing residences,” Starlight head of development and construction Josh Kaufman said. “We’re extending the life of the existing suites and transforming the community through the addition of three new towers and best-in-class resident amenities and landscaping.” The development company pointed to Burnaby’s 2020 housing needs report, which noted new rental developments fall
“far short of anticipated needs.” The latest estimate of the city’s vacancy rate sits at 1.3% (one- and two-bedroom suites) to 1.7% (three-bedroom), with the vacancy rate at 1.5% for studios. According to the housing needs report, a “healthy” vacancy rate is considered to be between 3% and 5%. In its news release, Starlight noted it plans to build everything from studios to three-bedroom apartments, along with amenities such as a daycare, a gym, a pool, kids’ play structures and gardens. -With files from the Western Investor

Opinion now MY VIEW KEITH BALDREY
Topic: Do we need strict vaccine mandates?
The “Election No One Wants” is sleepwalking through the dog days of summer and it remains far from clear whether Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s gamble that an early vote will secure him a majority government will pay off. Many analysts agree that to form a majority, the Liberals will have to hold onto their B.C. ridings and perhaps add a few more, chiefly at the expense of the Conservatives. Trudeau and his party may well accomplish that feat, but for now the issue that seems to be winning out the most is apathy and disinterest. That can work for Trudeau, as it makes it harder for his opponents to be heard but it can also bite him if he cannot motivate his voting base to get out and vote. This province has 42 ridings and about 15 of them are strongholds for the various parties. The Conservatives, whose 17 seats are the most of any party, are almost unbeatable in the eastern Fraser Valley, some of the Interior and most of the northern region of the province. The Liberals, with 11 seats, are entirely confined to Metro Vancouver when it comes to areas of strength. Especially in Vancouver and Surrey, where they won six of nine ridings in 2019. The NDP is strongest on Vancouver Island, where it won five of seven ridings last time around (the Green Party won the other two) and the east side of Vancouver and nearby suburbs. Unless there is a significant shift in voting patterns, only about a dozen or so ridings can be considered truly competitive and liable to change hands on Sept. 20. Most of these ridings are located in Metro Vancouver, particularly in the suburbs, where the NDP is
“We need to inform people about vaccinations and keep having mobile vaccinations going, etc.”
Path to victory runs through B.C.
strongest provincially. For example, the Conservatives won Port Moody-Coquitlam in 2019 by a mere 333 votes over the NDP, in what was the tightest threeway result in the province. Another nail biter was right next door in Coquitlam-Port Coquitlam, which the Liberals won by a tiny margin (339 votes) over the Conservatives. The Liberals won Burnaby North-Seymour over the NDP by fewer than 1,600 votes with the Conservatives well back (after candidate Heather Leung’s campaign imploded). What is interesting about these three ridings is they cover ground that is, for the most part, NDP-friendly at the provincial level. In fact, in last fall’s provincial election the NDP won all five of the seats that fit inside the boundaries for the federal ridings. The NDP also boosted its support by significant numbers of votes in places like Langley and Maple Ridge. Does that put a couple of ridings in those areas currently held by the Conservatives into play for the party? Situations like these ones raise the real possibility the NDP will improve its seat count in B.C. come Sept. 20 and, if so, that could be bad news for Trudeau and the Liberals to the point of them falling short of a majority. Throw in that NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh’s personal popularity has grown, along with the fact he is a more seasoned campaigner (and more effective communicator) now and we could seem surprisingly positive results for the federal NDP come election night. But the campaign will be in sleepwalk mode for a while yet. Keith Baldrey is chief political reporter for Global BC.

Local teens audition for soap
Nearly 1,500 teenagers from around the Lower Mainland flocked to the Burnaby studios of BCTV to try out for only 16 main roles in a new 13-part teen soap opera backed by Walt Disney Productions. “Some wore black stirrup pants and wildly teased hair; others looked as fresh and wholesome as (1960s teen idols) Frankie (Avalon) and Anette (Funicello),” states a NOW description of the would-be soap stars. Only 285 were called back for second interviews. The new show was to deal with “issues of concern to teens.”

Opinionnow We didn’t spike trees
‘Unbearable’ project
Editor: Re: An open letter to Trans Mountain about the spiking trees on TMX pipeline right of way in Burnaby. On considering the expected re-start of TMX (Trans Mountain expansion) work in the Burnaby area, Protect the Planet: Stop TMX would like to publicly emphasize that we are committed to non-violent peaceful action. Protect the Planet: Stop TMX is a group of local citizen volunteers. We do not condone any actions that might endanger workers. We bring this up because around Feb. 15, 2021 we observed a sign posted on a tree near Holmes Creek, in an area designated for the TMX pipeline. The sign, signed by a Dr. Anonymous, stated that trees had been spiked. We searched the area but found no spikes. On returning to the area a few days later, we then found large nails in trees that did not have them before. A few days later, a red circle had been painted around these spikes. PPSTMX denounces Dr. Anonymous and anyone who does things that might result in the injury of workers. We would report anyone we caught doing such a thing. Cynthia Lee, on behalf of Protect the Planet: Stop TMX
Editor: I was bemused by your article: ‘We won’: Burnaby residents celebrate as city reverses ‘ridiculous’ delay to project, NOW News. I am an affected resident of Broadway Street. I am not celebrating. The city’s public meeting was curious. It was billed as an “information meeting,” but little information was given. It was not advertised as a “decision-making meeting.” Yet, 30 minutes into the meeting, the city representative, like a medium at a seance, stated that he “sensed” that residents wanted the project to continue. Most of the feedback was from one person (I did not get his name) who repeated that he wanted continuation. No poll was done of residents at the meeting or those who could not make it to the meeting, yet somehow a decision was made. After three years of the unbearable noise of digging, grinding and constant backup alarms, as well as coughing from the dust clouds, my family is sick of it all. Although I strongly support the project goals, I have lost faith in the city’s ability, and the contractor’s commitment, to continue in an acceptable manner. My vote would be to delay the project until the city and contractor can demonstrate that everything is being done to minimize this project’s damaging impact on residents. Barry Pointon, Burnaby

Suspicious hospital fire has staff moving
Cornelia Naylor
cnaylor@burnabynow.com
The people managing Burnaby Hospital’s $1.4-billion redevelopment project are looking to
move into new offices after a suspicious fire at the hospital destroyed their last ones nine months ago. The redevelopment team had been housed in the Cascade Building
when a fire broke out on Nov. 15. The blaze started in a common area or recreation room on the second floor of the Cascade Building, which had housed the

mental health and substance use units, and police later determined it had been deliberately set. The damage to the Cascade Building was “too substantial to repair,” according to Fraser Health, and the redevelopment team has been working remotely and sharing a few spaces at the hospital on a rotating basis for nine months now. It now has its eye on office space in the nearby Kodak Building at 4225 Kincaid St., according to an invitation to tender put out by Facilities Management, an entity that pro-
vides management services for Fraser Health, Providence Health Care Society, Provincial Health Services Authority and Vancouver Coastal Health Authority. The redevelopment team is looking to relocate to a 5,000-square-foot space on the fifth floor of the Kodak Building, according to the Facilities Management documents. The space will accommodate more than 36 staff with “ample meeting space,” the documents say. Fire or no fire, the team had planned to relocate eventually, according to

Fraser Health, since the Cascade Building and west wing are slated for demolition to make room for Phase 2 of the massive project. But a health authority spokesperson did not respond to questions about the cost of the new Kodak Building office space or the length of the lease. “Details on the relocation are still being finalized,” read an emailed statement. The Burnaby Hospital redevelopment project, approved by the province in September 2019, reached a major milestone in July, when EllisDon Infrastructure was awarded the contract to undertake Phase 1, which includes designing and building the new Keith and Betty Beedie Pavilion, expanding the support facilities building and renovating the existing buildings on campus. The Beedie Pavilion and support facilities building are scheduled to be complete in 2025. The renovations are expected to be finished in 2027. Phase 2, which includes a second patientcare tower with 160 beds and a new cancer treatment centre, is expected to begin in 2025 once a business plan has been approved.

SIENA- the heights: Elevated standard of living in one of Burnaby’s most historic neighbourhoods
I
Burnaby Heights welcomes new collection of beautiful, incomparable homes
n a city of constant and often overwhelming change, Burnaby Heights is an oasis of tradition and community.
This is the neighbourhood where staff at The Valley Bakery have been passing fresh breads, cakes and cookies across the counter since 1979. And where Anton’s Pasta has been delivering heaping plates of fettucine and lasagna to its tables for more than 35 years. This is where families from near and far come to swim at Eileen Dailly Leisure Pool & Fitness Centre and let their four-legged friends run free at Confederation Dog Park. It was with all of this—and more—in mind that SIENA- the heights was conceived. A new collection of 38 spacious one bedroom +den, and two-bedroom + den & flex homes, SIENA is setting an unprecedented standard of Burnaby Heights living that was inspired by— and blends seamlessly with—the neighbourhood that surrounds it. Myron Calof, President of I4 Property Group, explains that SIENA was carefully conceived to offer everyone, whether new to Burnaby Heights or a long-time neighbourhood resident seeking a change, a home whose large and small details exceed what we’ve come to expect from condominium living.
“We recognized there are plenty of people living in single-family homes here who want to stay in the Heights area and also want the features that they might see in a single-family home but not typically in a condominium,” says Calof. “Hence, we thought of ways to make these homes as house-like as possible. We built features like side-by-side laundry with a counter above it for sorting because people living in homes are used to that. We even have laundry rooms in some of our one and two-bedroom homes, a rare find in the condo market. Residents at Siena want more than a small stacking laundry set with no room to do anything around it except maybe in the hallway.” Suites at SIENA also boast large kitchens featuring full-sized Bosch appliances; spa-inspired ensuite bathrooms with dual “his and hers” sinks, medicine chests and vanities; central heating and air conditioning; expansive terraces of up to 250 square feet; and much more.
Once outside your suite, the thoughtfulness invested in design continues. Taking cues from the Tuscan city with which it shares a name (and nodding to Burnaby Heights’ generations-spanning Italian community) SIENA’s common-area amenities were created to encourage residents to get together and foster a sense of community. “Siena, the city, is all about meeting places,” says Calof, “including the Piazzo del Campo and many outdoor cafes to name just a few. So, in designing SIENA we’ve included a rooftop deck and barbeque area for residents to enjoy a glass of vino, all the while taking in the great 360° North/South views, and just off the lobby there’s a community Piazza with a striped-column façade reminiscent of Siena architecture.” “And,” Calof excitedly adds, “I don’t think there’s a lobby in all of Burnaby Heights that will compare to ours. People are going to feel the luxury, elegance and sophistication of SIENA from the moment they enter the building.
But life for those who live at SIENA will be about so much more than what goes on indoors. Step out into Burnaby Heights and you’ll feel part of a historic neighbourhood where residents and merchants alike quickly learn your name and where every essential convenience is a mere steps away. “It’s a very pedestrian-friendly, walkable kind of neighbourhood,” says Calof. “We have many, many blocks of small and large businesses: restaurants, coffee shops, clothing stores, hair stylists. Safeway is directly across the street from SIENA. And every possible recreational amenity is available at the nearby Eileen Dailly Community Centre beautiful park space, a track, a pool, and much more. It’s great for families and for anybody who wants to get out of the clutter of a typical urban street and into a more natural green environment. You don’t have to get into a car—you don’t have to even get onto a bicycle! “All in all, Burnaby Heights is a gem in the overall Metro Vancouver urban scene, and SIENA- the heights puts you right in the heart of it.” SIENA- the heights is estimated for completion in Spring 2024. For more information and to register, visit sienaburnabyheights.com.
Classic in Character. Uncompromising in Design. SIENA- the heights is an incomparable collection of spacious one- and two-bedroom+den & flex homes in the heart of historic Burnaby Heights. Combining comfort and luxury, SIENA offers a renewed sense of arrival, marking all that you have achieved and everything still to come.

Police-run soccer camp just keeps on growing Cornelia Naylor
cnaylor@burnabynow.com
Burnaby RCMP’s youth soccer camp program was back with a bang after a one-year hiatus last summer because of COVID-19. The local detachment hosted a pair of two-day camps this month, one at Edmonds Park and a second that wrapped up last week (Aug. 18) at Confederation Park. “I grew up playing soccer on these fields in Burnaby, so, for me, it’s a really special experience to be out there as a coach and as a police officer with kids from all over the city,” said Const. Dave Morris, a Burnaby Mountie who
played professional soccer with the Vancouver Whitecaps before pursuing a policing career. “By the end of these camps, bonds are formed, and kids really see the officers they are playing with in a new light. Overall, it was a great experience that strengthens our community, and, most of all, it was fun for the kids, the volunteers and the Burnaby RCMP officers and staff that take part.” Morris helped run this year’s program with fellow youth section officer Const.Tulsi Reddy. The free camp program, for kids aged eight to 13, was started in 2017 by Const. Kwame Amoateng, a former Burnaby Moun-
tie who has since been transferred out of the province. His first camp focused on kids from a low-income community in South Burnaby and drew fewer than 20 campers. This year, 218 kids applied for 100 spots. “Discussions are already underway to see what next year may look like.We are looking at what’s possible,” Morris said. “Putting these camps together is a big effort involving people from all over the detachment as well as volunteers. We are getting great feedback from families about the fun experience that these camps provided for them, which makes it all worth it.”

At some restaurants, kids eat for free. On transit, it’s the same deal — starting on Sept. 1 for kids 12 and under – which is a big bonus for those students who use buses and SkyTrain with their parents in order to get to classes. “Free transit for children 12 and under makes life more affordable for families,” said Premier John Horgan, in a statement. “Taking public transit is a great choice. It offers a cleaner, low-carbon way of getting around that works for people, communities and the environment. The ‘Get on Board’ program will also encourage a new generation of transit riders.” For example, a fam-

ily who buys their child a $57 monthly TransLink pass for a year would save more than $687. TransLink estimates that approximately 370,000 children 12 and under throughout B.C. will be eligible to ride for free when the program is launched. To help build awareness for the upcoming launch of this program, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has released an official logo featuring the slogan “Get on Board - Kids 12 and Under Ride Free.” Depending on the mode of public tran-
sit and service provider (TransLink or BC Transit), there are slight differences in the program’s initial rollout. For TransLink faregated services (such as SkyTrain, SeaBus, and the West Coast Express), accompaniment by a fare-paying customer will be required to tap children aged 12 and under, and riding free of charge through the fare gates, up to a maximum of four children. Children 12 and under will continue to be able to access the gated systems by themselves with the purchase of a fare to tap

Children 12 and under who are registered HandyDART customers or children who are accompanying a registered HandyDART customer will be able to travel for free on HandyDART without requiring a fare product or identification. Starting Sept. 1, 2021, children under 12 may apply to register as a HandyDART customer. To be eligible to register for HandyDART, children must be unable to take conventional transit due to a disability. Children on HandyDART must be accompanied by an adult.

Celebrating Seniors
How to stay fit even when it heats up Margaret Coates
editorial@burnabynow.com
Staying active both mentally and physically is one of the top ways that older people can age well. But staying active at this time of year, especially during this dangerously hot summer, has been a challenge. Regular physical exercise is linked to healthy aging as it improves your balance, reduces falls, helps you stay independent longer and helps prevent disease such as stroke, osteoporosis, and Type 2 diabetes. Physical exercise is also linked to a decrease in the risk factors for dementia. Exercising the brain is correlated to healthy aging as well. It is linked
to physical mobility, stimulates our neural pathways, increases the quality of life, helps you stay connected to community and to stay independent. It can promote personal development and sustainability. By keeping our minds active we can share ideas, develop our thinking skills, and improve our memories. Many brain exercise activities can be social such as playing a game with other people (bridge, anyone?) or participating in a book club. Being isolated for a senior, it has been said, is as bad as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. But how do we get the physical exercise we need when our province has been experiencing heat wave after heat wave?
This year
The heat waves have posed serious health and safety issues for seniors and, in fact, caused many heat-related deaths in the seniors’ population. In the worst of the heat, it has been advisable to keep abreast of simple heat relief steps such as staying hydrated and cool, dressing for the weather, avoiding the direct sun, finding air-conditioned spaces like libraries, community, and recreation centres to hang out in, or mist cooling centres stationed across our region, and curtailing some of your physical activities outdoors unless you choose the early morning. However, getting exercise is important even in this weather. So, you could try getting out for
walk which might mean getting up a little earlier or you could try going to the air conditioned indoor shopping centre for a mall walk. I walked around the Maplewood Mud Flats
Exercising the brain is correlated to health aging.
Conservation Area, bounded mostly by the ocean, where it was shady and cool, with the extra delight in seeing various birds. Exercising by going for a swim adds the bo-
nus of cooling you down. Or you could try an online exercise class held in the mornings before it gets too hot. If you go to one of the private gyms which are now open, make sure they have good air quality. Though brain exercise can be easier in this weather, the heat can cause us to be sluggish in our thinking, perhaps dizzy, or feeling fatigued. Take the opportunity to get to an air conditioned space both to cool down and get some brain exercise. Go to the library, seniors, community, or recreation centres where they have more activities on offer now that COVID-19 restrictions are on the wane. On their website, the Alzheimer’s Society states:
“The brain is one of your most vital organs. It plays a role in every action and every thought, and just like the rest of your body, it needs to be looked after.” With all the best intentions in the world we sometimes need help in this weather. All older adult British Columbians can call the “Safe Seniors, Strong Communities” initiative, at 211, if they require help with groceries, water delivery, or a friendly check-in. I know I’m going to try hard to get my mental and physical exercise, but I’ll keep in mind the heat smart tips for staying healthy in this heat wave. Now where’s that water bottle, wide-brimmed hat, and sunscreen?

How do you beat the Heat? With all the heat, it is appropriate issue a reminder, dogs suffer more from the heat than we do. Can you imagine walking on the blazing hot ground in your bare feet? How about being locked in a car at 50 degrees celsius (120 for the older crowd), even with windows down a bit? Or wearing a fur coat in the summer? Sassy, my 18 year old rescue, loves being in the kitchen sink with cool water running over her, with no soap involved. (cuz then it is bath)! Her bowl is full of fresh water in her daily washed dish. On returning from a brief walk, her paws are wiped with the wet cloth, cuz a girl gotta go! We pick areas that have lots of grass, like our local doggy park. Stay safe.
Q
How do I know if WorkSafeBC (WCB) is paying me fairly?
Q
A
There are a number of factors that go into assessing whether you are getting paid fairly by WCB.
A
One factor is whether WCB sets your wage rate correctly. Wage rates can be calculated in a number of ways. If your wage rate does not look like it accurately reflects your average earnings, this could be the problem.
If you would like help determining whether you are getting paid fairly or need assistance with your claim, call me at 604-327-9882. We offer a free consultation to determine whether we can help.

Dentures may replace all or only some of the teeth. The dentures that replace all the teeth are known as complete dentures and they rest on the gums that cover the jawbones. The stability and retention of these dentures are dependent on the foundation. Dentures that replace some but not all of the teeth are known as partial dentures. They attach to the teeth that are still present and also cover and rest on the gums and bone where the teeth are missing.

The best starting point to see if dentures are an option for you is to visit a Denturist. A Denturist focuses solely on removable appliances that replace teeth with extensive training on the restoration and replacement of teeth, including dentures for even the most complex cases. A Denturist will also be able to help determine if another treatment option might be more suited to your particular situation.
Another factor is the type of compensation you are being paid. For example, are you on wage loss benefits or on a disability pension? Different stages can result in different payments. If you disagree with a WCB decision, you can request a review of this decision.

Q
I received in the mail a flyer from a company coming to buy coins and gold. How do their prices compare to yours?
A
This company comes into town from back east a few times a year. I had a mother and daughter come in who had an offer from them. I offered $2150 for the gold jewellery they had. This company had offered them $500.00. Another gentleman took silver dollars to them and then came to us. We paid him 300% more than they offered. My firm belief is that you could take your coins or gold to any reputable in the country and get more than these people offer.
Q A
I have some hearing loss and I’m finding it difficult to understand people especially when background noise is present, will hearing aids help? Background noise is present in everyone’s life. Unconsciously, the brain filters out most background noise. During hearing loss, the brain becomes lazy in this process because all sounds are reduced or inaudible. When an individual begins using the hearing aid all sounds are once again heard and it is necessary to retrain the brain in selective listening skills. It is critical that the hearing aid consumer participate in follow-up and counseling sessions during this period of adjustment. Some helpful tips - two hearing aids instead of one, hearing aids with digital signal processing, hearing aids with directional microphones, wireless technology and possibly auditory training will increase your chances for success.
I believe that we could serve you better and offer more than they could ever hope to.
Q A
What is dry mouth and is it harmful to my oral health? Dry mouth, known as xerostomia, results from inadequate production and flow of saliva into the mouth. Xerostomia is not a disease, but it can be a symptom of a medical disorder or a side effect of certain medications. Saliva is essential to healthy gums and teeth. Saliva helps maintain a balanced oral PH and has antimicrobial properties. Hence, saliva helps prevent cavities by neutralizing the acids produced by bacteria and by limiting bacterial growth. Therefore, individuals with dry mouth are at higher risk for cavities, gum disease, mouth sores and bad breath. If you have xerostomia, the first goal should be to identify the cause. If the cause cannot be eliminated, dry mouth can be alleviated with saliva substitutes, sugar free gums and regular water intake. Good dental hygiene is crucial to prevent decay and worsening gum disease. Ask your dentist if you have concerns.

1. Did you know that WCB may not listen to your doctor?
your community online and in print!
2. Did you know that WCB can base their decisions about your claim on advice from doctors that have never seen you before?
WCB can do this by relying on their own Board Medical Advisor’s opinion. Board Medical Advisors are doctors that provide medical opinions to WCB. Oftentimes, WCB will give this doctor your medical information and a background of your injury and ask for a medical opinion. A Board Medical Advisor will often provide an opinion without assessing you or even speaking to you. They may not even talk to your doctor before they provide their opinion.

WCB can then rely on this doctor’s opinion when making their decision. When this happens, you may feel like WCB is threatening to cut you off of your benefits if you don’t return to work, and you may not know what to do.
featured expert.
However, one important detail you should be aware of is that if you disagree with WCB’s decision, you can request a review of that decision. To do so, a request for review must be filed within 90 days. Always read letters from WCB and make a note of any deadlines to request a review, because if you don’t request a review of WCB’s decision, it will remain binding.

A
of the month
For example, when a decision needs to be made on whether or not you are ready to return to work, your doctor may recommend that you continue to stay off of work due to your injuries. However, WCB may decide that you are ready to return to work and may cut you off of your wage loss benefits. You may be wondering how they can do this, especially when your own doctor is saying that you are not ready to return to work yet.

I am having trouble overspending each month. I’ve tried to budget but it’s too much work to track everything I spend. I’ll start but then give up in a couple of weeks. What can I do differently to have more success? This answer starts with knowing how much you spend each month and how much after-tax money you bring in. But before you start worrying about creating a dreaded budget and tracking every nickel and dime per category, let’s look at a different approach. My budget has two categories in it: fixed and variable. Fixed expenses are how much you need to spend each month to maintain your lifestyle. While variable expenses include what you are accustomed to having on hand to really enjoy your lifestyle, such as money for a fancy coffee. I have a spreadsheet that list out all the bills needed to keep a roof over my head, my family (and dog) fed and gas in my car; everything else is variable. Next, keep an eye on where you tend to overspend. Overspending tends to happen in one or two areas so rather than focusing on the whole budget, focus on the areas that are giving you trouble. Is it late night online shopping tempting you with free shipping? A hobby or collection that’s gotten out of hand? Forcing yourself to give up something you enjoy rarely works, but at times some recreational “triage” needs to take place. You can either replace it with something else that you enjoy that costs less, or if you decide the enjoyment is worth the money spent then set a maximum spend per month or even make a game of finding great deals for your hobby each month.
Q
How to encourage an elderly person to bathe or shower?
Q
What is a pre-approval?
A
Broaching the subject of bad bathing habits is a sensitive matter. Fears about falling in the bath or seeming incapable of self-care can motivate a contrary reaction.
A
Once you’ve found the right mortgage advisor, a good first step in your home buying journey is to secure a pre-approval, which is based on verified client financial information such as your employment and down payment confirmation. While a pre-approval does not guarantee approval of a mortgage, it helps estimate the mortgage amount you may qualify for. The final approval decision is made when a full mortgage application is submitted along with details of the property being purchased. With a pre-approval, you and your mortgage advisor can discuss different options and scenarios to determine if you are ready to purchase your home and help refine the search criteria for your new home. Home buying is one of the most important financial decisions you will make, and your mortgage advisor will provide the advice and individual plan you need to guide you through the home buying journey.
If the person does wash sometimes, compliment the behaviour. Say something like “That shampoo really made your hair look nice.” Overall, be positive. Don’t give commands like “You need to wash!” Instead, try “I think a spa day would make you feel good.” Ask the person’s doctor to emphasize regular bathing. A doctor’s order can carry more weight than a family member’s suggestion. A doctor might also detect problems that are interfering with washing, like reduced mobility. Install bathing aids, like a handheld sprayer, bathing chair, and grab bars. At times, seniors having dementia or fear of falling require physical assistance. In such cases, hire a home care company that will provide an experienced caregiver to promote safe bathing and showering.

Burnaby Paralympian Felicia Voss-Shafiq and her teammates on the Canadian women’s sitting volleyball team celebrated a major victory at the Tokyo Paralympic Games this week before even stepping on the court. Big victory: Felicia Voss-Shafiq. PHOTO CONTRIBUTED
Voss-Shafiq told the NOW the team and its supporters were “devastated.” “We have friends and family back home who, if they could, would be here, but they can’t, so they were expecting to watch it either online or on TV,” she said in an interview from a staging camp in Shiwa, Japan Friday. Langley’s Danielle Ellis,Voss-Shafiq’s teammate and the only other Team Canada player from B.C., took to social media to protest the move and called on others to do likewise. “The Paralympics was started as a PARALLEL to the Olympics, but I see no parallel here,” she wrote in an Instagram post. “It certainly doesn’t feel like a step in the right direction against discrimination and ableism to me.” She urged supporters to contact Olympic Broadcasting Services and the International Paralympic Committee to protest the decision. “I don’t know if what we do now will allow you to watch our games during this Paralympics, but let’s make sure this never happens again,” Ellis said. The post drew support from the Canadian Paralympic Team.
“We couldn’t agree more,” stated a comment from the team’s Instagram account. Then, on Monday, the Canadian Paralympic Committee announced coverage would be extended to include all of the team’s games. “The Canadian Paralympic Media Consortium, led by the Canadian Paralympic Committee, has confirmed its ability to extend coverage plans of Canada’s sitting volleyball games at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, in partnership with the International Paralympic Committee and local host broadcaster OBS,” stated at press release. Voss-Shafiq said she was “overjoyed.” “What an incredible win,” she wrote in a text message. “We felt really empowered and so grateful to our friends and family who supported us in effecting change – sharing our posts, sending messages, writing emails.” Voss-Shafiq also gave a nod to the Canadian Paralympic Committee and the CBC, who “really advocated” for the team, she said. The Paralympic Games run until Sept. 5. The sitting volleyball team’s first preliminary match is Friday against Brazil.

Carole was born in Calgary, AB., and raised in Medicine Hat until she was 5, when they moved to New Westminster. Carole lost her fight with cancer after 5 long years. She will be greatly missed by her husband John of 49 years, son Brodie (Melissa), grandchildren Isabelle and Hudson, brother Dennis Tennant, niece Jessica and nephews Andrew and Solomon. HARDING, Howard E. June 27, 1939 − August 10, 2021 It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to Howard Harding. Son to Herbert Edmund Harding & Hilda May Harding nee Tidman, Howard was born and raised in Kingston, Ontario. He spent most of his life living in Burnaby, BC where he worked at Core−Mark International for many years. Howard attended KCVI in Kingston, 1960 and Carlton University in Ottawa, 1963. Along with his 3 brothers, he was a newspaper boy for the Whig Standard and played the trumpet in the Salvation Army Boys Band. He played hockey in full gear, taking risks when needed. He was awarded two broken arms for his prowess on the bicycle. He swam everyday and chatted with everyone poolside. He could venture fearlessly among strangers and pick the best of them to be his friends. During his retirement he lived the good life, traveling extensively throughout the world and always ensuring he was photographed on each trip enjoying his favourite beverage in front of a local pub or on board a cruise ship. Howard is survived by his 3 brothers Douglas (Siu), David, Wayne (Margaret), and his niece and nephews Nadine, Adrian, Darren, Ron, Mathew, Garth and Philip. We invite his friends to celebrate his life by raising a glass and remembering the good times. In lieu of a ceremony, Howard asks that you donate to the Family Services Branch, Salvation Army Kingston.
