Rotten rat riles new car buyer

For the last two-and-a-half years, Marina Roma-March has been driving around in her Honda Odyssey feeling kind of stupid.

“I’ll be driving and… I’m constantly smelling,” she joked.

The Burnaby mom has been sniffing around to try and find the source of a notso-funny smell that she says first appeared in her 2013 vehicle a couple days after she took it home from the dealership.

She bought the car brand new from the Open Road Honda on Kingsway, but within a couple days, a bad odour started emanating from the vents.

Roma-March brought it back right away, but Honda couldn’t find a problem. It was the beginning of a two-year odyssey for the family’s Odyssey.

Every time the car was up for maintenance, she would complain about the smell that never seemed to go away but mostly appeared when she turned on the defogger, predominantly on the driver’s side.

Mechanics told her they found evidence of rodent droppings but not the culprit.

At one point, she turned to Honda Canada for help, getting the dealership to take apart the van’s H-vac system and dashboard in November 2014, but Roma-March claims the smell came back a couple weeks later, just a little less pungent.

The smell continued until the beginning of this month, when her husband noticed the reflection of fur in the windshield on the driver’s side.

A mouse or rat had indeed found its way into a vent on the inside of the van and died.

“Just driving the car knowing there’s a dead rodent there, it’s creepy,” RomaMarch told the NOW. The question now is how the rodent got in the van and how long it has been there.

‘Kayaktivists’ launching new protest

Climate change activists are planning to surround the Kinder Morgan marine terminal – on land and water – in Burnaby next weekend.

The Saturday, May 14 event is part of Break Free, a global series of protests against fossil fuel projects.

The Burnaby event will include an estimated 100 kayakers on the water, while others hold a sit-in on land, all surrounding the

Westridge Marine Terminal, where tankers fill up with crude on the Burrard Inlet.

“I think the tone of the action is to send a clear message to our elected leaders … that there’s no consent for the Kinder Morgan pipeline, and there’s an

urgent need to leave fossil fuels in the ground to basically transition off fossil fuels to a clean-energy future,” said Ruth Walmsley, a spokesperson with Burnaby Residents Opposing Kinder Morgan Expansion.

BROKE is coordinating

with 350.org and Greenpeace, the two main groups organizing Break Free actions in Canada.Walmsley said the Burnaby event will be peaceful, and she’s not expecting any arrests or property damage. However, she expressed upset

‘Financial crisis’ at George Derby Nurses laid off and services cut at Burnaby seniors’ care centre

More than 50 nurses at a Burnaby care home for veterans received layoff notices Monday thanks to ongoing financial strife.

The George Derby Centre houses roughly 300 residents, half of whom are veterans, and management is serving layoff notices to 54 registered nurses and licensed practical nurses.

If the centre can’t get an estimated $1 million from the Fraser Health Authority to balance the books, it’ll have to contract out the staff, according to Ricky Kwan, George Derby’s executive director.

“We are still hoping the health authority will be able to get back to us with a better sustainable funding lift.

Then we will be able to withdraw from this whole contracting-out initiative,” Kwan said. “Unfortunately, if Fraser Health can’t come up with that option, in another 60 days we will be bringing in a contractor, and we will make sure the changes are smooth, to ensure minimum impact on the residents.”

Meanwhile, family members and loved ones of George Derby residents have expressed concerns about the possibility of contracting out, the centre’s financial problems, the program cuts, staffing changes they’ve already seen, and a lack of communication

about the changes.The centre reduced programs for things like arts activities, bus trips and physical therapy.

Ted Wendland’s father bounced around from care home to hospital before settling at George Derby.

Wendland said his father’s health has improved since he moved into the Burnaby centre.

“It’s fabulous. It’s added years to his life,”Wendland said. “I credit that to the nurses here.They know every patient; they know their needs. Some like burnt toast, so they get burnt toast every day.”

Wendland is concerned about cuts to nursing staff.

“If that goes, this just becomes another care facility because the veterans aren’t getting the care they were promised,” he said. “For veterans, that was a benefit they were promised for serving their country. If it’s being taken away, they may as well be sitting at home or at Royal Columbian (Hospital). I’m angry.You’ve got people running the place here, and everything is bottom line. It just doesn’t make sense.”

Paul Ballinger, whose 94-year-old father-in-law also lives at George Derby, is head of the centre’s family council.

“They’re saying this is a full-blown financial crisis,” Ballinger said. “The bottom line is money.”

New two-rink arena plan moves to feasibility study

The plan to build a new twin arena in South Burnaby is moving to the next step.

The city is getting ready to issue a request for proposals for a feasibility study for the development of a new ice arena.

The city’s RFP will focus

on a site at 10th Avenue and 18th Street within the Edmonds Town Centre plan and feature two rinks.

On Monday, council approved the study, which is expected to cost $250,000 and take several months to complete.

“People will be excited about this,” said Dave Ellenwood, the city’s parks and recreation director,

adding user groups continually ask when the arena is moving forward. “Yes we want to get it done quickly, but we need to do it right.”

The city was looking at three possible locations for the arena including Bonsor Park and MacPherson Park, but eventually settled on the Edmonds location.

tion, Fraser Health requires that the centre increase the number of direct-care hours residents receive. All this, according to Kwan, has affected the centre’s bottom line, and he’s now trying to cut costs by reducing money spent on staff or secure more funding.

The registered nurses were given two months’ notice, and the LPNs have six months’ notice before they’re out of work. Kwan

said he would be open to rehiring them, but that could mean they come back to work for less pay under a non-unionized contractor.

The B.C. Nurses’ Union represents the affected staff, and president Gayle Duteil noted the timing coincided with a special week to honour nurses.

Man accused in BCIT peeping case faces a second charge A BCIT student accused of peeping on fellow students in a school bathroom last year has been charged with a second crime.

According to court records, Chieh-SenYang is now facing two charges of secretly observing or recording nudity in a private place.

The 23-year-old was originally charged on Nov. 20, 2015 with one count stemming from an incident four days earlier at the school.

However, on April 7,Yang was charged with a second offence that dated back to Oct. 22, 2015 Burnaby RCMP Staff Sgt. Maj. John Buis noted the new charge is a result of the Mounties’ investigation, adding the two charges involve two separate incidents and two different victims at BCIT. “From this point, I’m not aware, nor is the investigator aware of any other incidents that occurred at BCIT,” he

told the NOW. However, he said if people have information they should come forward and contact RCMP. Yang has made a number of court appearances since the charges were laid. His last was on May 3, while his next court appearance is May 17.

Yang allegedly used a mirror and cellphone to record men in a washroom on the Burnaby campus.

City now Council backs nurses Only hours after receiving their layoff notices, many of the same nurses from the George Derby Centre showed up at Burnaby city hall looking for support from council in their fight to keep their jobs.

Marva Vidal has been a nurse at the care home for 28 years.

She described the current mood in George Derby as very stressful.Vidal said the nurses are trying to do their best, but the uncertainty has been hanging over their

heads.

“It’s not a happy place; it used to be a very nice place, and it’s not,” she said.

Shanaz Ali has been a nurse at the centre for 23 years. She said residents and their families are upset over the change and she believes the level of care will go down if the nurses are contracted out.

The two nurses are hoping management will change direction and take back the layoff notices, and they vow to keep fighting

for their jobs alongside residents and families.

City council weighed in on the situation with the nurses, calling it “disturbing” and “despicable.”

The city is sending a letter to both the provincial and federal governments asking the centre be properly funded.

However, Mayor Derek Corrigan noted other than advocating on the facility’s behalf politically, there isn’t much the city can do.

Convicted killer asks court for early parole

A man convicted for his role in a gangland slaying in Burnaby nearly 20 years ago could be eligible for parole sooner than his original sentence.

Simon Kwok Cheng Chow was convicted by a jury in 2001 of the firstdegree murder of Vikash Chand, and sentenced to life in prison without the eligibility of parole for 25 years.

Chow has applied to the court to have his parole eligibility reduced to 15 years on the basis of “personal growth and insights” arising from his time in prison, his conduct while serving his sentence and that he’s maintained his innocence throughout his trial and sentence.

In his decision, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Bruce Greyell wrote there is a substantial likelihood of success that a jury would reduce or waive Chow’s parole eligibility, and urged a jury to hear the application as soon as possible.

Chand was killed on Oct. 7, 1998 while changing a licence plate on Chow’s car in a murder-for-hire scheme. Four men were charged after Shane Shoemaker shot Chand several times at Rags to Riches, a Burnaby used-car lot, around 2 p.m.

Shoemaker then ran east on Second Avenue, where he was picked up by Haddi Binahmad, the getaway driver, who got immunity from prosecution in exchange for giving evidence.

nue, was owned by Sameer Mapara, another of the coaccused.

According to Binahmad, Mapara hired George Wasfi to kill Chand.Wasfi in turn hired Binahmad and then Shoemaker to carry out the killing for $40,000.Wasfi arranged for Chow to pay Binahmad $7,000 as part of a down payment for the contract of $10,000. Binahmad gave the $7,000 he received from Chow to Shoemaker, who immediately went on a spending spree. At Wasfi’s further request Chow gave Binahmad another $2,000 after the killing so he could get out of town.

Wasfi, Shoemaker, Mapara and Chow went to trial in the fall of 2000, but Wasfi’s court proceedings were separated from those of the other three, who were later found guilty.

Wafsi was convicted separately, while Chow appealed his conviction but lost.

Court documents note Chow is now 51 years old and is married with an 18-year-old son and a 15-year-old daughter. He has seen his wife and chil-

dren periodically since his incarceration and seeks to reunite with his family.

As part of the evidence relating to his character, Chow has progressed from maximum security institutions to a minimum security institution where he is presently.

Documents state Chow has taken numerous correctional programs relating to personal growth, social interaction and violence prevention. He has performed well in these programs and is working toward his bachelor of science degree.

He also maintained he has avoided gang connections and the institutional drug culture while incarcerated except for one instance in 2007.

The Crown opposed Chow’s application on the basis that his character has not changed during the course of his incarceration sufficient to allow his application to go in front of a jury.

Crown also argued that he is unrepentant and maintains his innocence that he was involved in the murder.

Penalties deliver a wallop to wallets Yes, yes, yes!

We applaud the provincial government for hiking penalties for distracted driving in the province.

The current fine is $167 for a first offence.The new fines and penalty-point premiums will mean a first offender will get a $543 ticket ($368 base fine plus $175 penalty-point premium).

For a second offence, there will be a $888 fine, with a $1,600 fine for a third offence. Demerit points on

driver’s licences will also increase from three to four points.

Apparently the government’s public consultation process indicated 90 per cent of the public wanted higher fines and so the new fines were set.

There will also be an automatic review of a person’s driver’s licence after two tickets, and, at the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles’ discretion, a driving prohibition of three to 12 months

can be levied.

Excellent.

The new fines target folks where it hurts – their wallets.

And if that doesn’t deter constant texters or phone checkers, the threat of losing their driver’s licence should do the trick.

B.C.’s distracted drivers kill more than 60 people every year and seriously injure about 330 more, according to Public Safety Ministry stats.

And it’s not like the police haven’t been driving the point home under the current fine system.

From 2010 to 2014, police officers issued more than 42,000 tickets to distracted drivers.

But clearly more was needed. One only has to be out on the roads for a short period of time to catch people glancing at their phones or actually texting while driving. Not to mention those who are sitting at

green lights looking at their phones.

B.C. Police Chief Les Sylven was quoted as saying, “The day will come when distracted driving is as socially unacceptable as drinking and driving.”

We can only hope.

Some folks have even said the new penalties, which kick in June 1, are not strong enough.

Some have suggested drivers who get more than three tickets should have

their licences revoked permanently.

Given that some drivers may not be able to kick their cellphone addiction, that might be necessary.

But for now this is a great improvement over the previous penalties.

And, most importantly, let’s hope it saves some lives.

Will economy trump ethics?

Ethics versus the economy.Which do voters care about the most in this province, and does either issue weigh heaviest on their minds when they cast a ballot next spring?

With the clock now ticking down to the next provincial election, it’s useful to look at two recent developments on both those issues.

One is the recent controversy over political fundraising, which the NDP undoubtedly intends to make the focus of at least one campaign attack ad aimed at the B.C. Liberals and Premier Christy Clark.

For the New Democrats, it’s easy pickings. Polls show the vast majority of people don’t want corporations or unions to donate to political parties, and the NDP will also home in on the extra salary the B.C. Liberal party pays Clark on an annual basis.

Clark was cleared last week of conflict allegations brought against her by NDP MLA David Eby, who tried to link the party’s lavish fundraising affairs featuring the premier – where tickets can go for $20,000 a pop – to her financial livelihood.

But being cleared by the conflict commissioner hardly ends the matter. One of the main themes of the eventual NDP election platform will likely touch on ethics and morality in politics and government, and political fundraising (even though the NDP takes money from corporations and unions too) will dovetail nicely into that.

The question, as I touched on in last week’s column, is whether enough voters will care about that issue to the point of switching from voting for the B.C. Liberals to voting for the NDP, thereby influencing the election outcome.

Given the fact that the premier has simply shrugged off any accusations about fundraising with a “who cares” attitude suggests she and her party obviously do not think it’s a vote-turning issue.

Instead, they will likely embrace another recent development on turf far favourable to them.That would be the latest, impressive job growth numbers from Statistics Canada, that show B.C. is far and away dominating the entire country when it comes to job creation and low unemployment. About 13,000 net new jobs were created in B.C. last month and over the course of the last year about 110,000 jobs were added. Swarm bait nets culprits Burnaby RCMP won a battle in an escalating war against “swarming” – a crime involving groups of people who rob or beat an outnumbered victim. New art gallery could bring back that 1970s excitement

Activists plan to surround Kinder Morgan terminal

Dear Editor A visit to an art gallery can be inspiring, surprising, educational, sometimes puzzling or infuriating, seldom boring.

You may say there are lots of art shows on TV, or the internet, where you can see major art works and their galleries, right from your own home.

But there’s nothing that substitutes for seeing the real thing Somehow there’s a connect between the skill and vision of the artist and the viewer.

That’s why visits to art galleries are so valuable. Artists can emphasize for us the beauty of nature, of people, of colour and form, or just different ways of seeing things.

We have our own gallery here in Burnaby that was the initiative of local citizens who felt this experience was so valuable that it should be available for their own city (then municipality).

It was their idea and a lot of their own hard physical work that made the current building, Ceperley Manor, a gallery that was a centre of excitement and innovation during the 1970s.

Why, even people from Vancouver came to see what we were doing.

These guidelines also decide what travelling art exhibitions a gallery qualifies for.

The current building can’t meet most of these criteria. It was built originally to be a family residence, not a public building.

It’s still amazing how the staff managed to modify it so it’s attractive and acceptable for certain shows.

For over a decade in the ’80s and ’90s I had the pleasure and privilege of reviewing the shows at our own Burnaby Art Gallery for the Burnaby NOW. Many were memorable, some astonishing, all professionally presented.

The only things lacking were enough space, and not enough Burnaby content, that would bring more of our own citizens to the gallery.

The exception always was the annual show for work from our own schools.

The work of Burnaby’s own artists are regularly exhibited in galleries in neighbouring cities and municipalities, hardly ever in our own.

In any projected new gallery, while there should be proper space for travelling fine works, there should be even more dedicated to proudly displaying the work of our own local artists – and maybe bring back some of that ’70s excitement.

There is no such thing as “conservative” or “liberal” science.

But, why does she believe that Mr. Trudeau and his Liberals would keep election promises? After all, they do have a track record! However, in all fairness, “consultation with First Nations” never meant veto rights for a small section of the population.

Yet, Alberta’s Premier Notley, the last remaining NDP Premier, is by far the most pro-pipeline premier in all of Canada..this is in very stark contrast to her pre-election rhetoric.

Roma-March insists her home doesn’t have a rodent infestation, and she believes the dead animal has been in the van since day one. She also noted a second Honda they own has no rodent issues. She said she feels let down by Honda for failing to find the dead animal earlier.

“I need to know the people who are servicing my car have my general interest at heart,” she said. “I don’t feel that with Open Road Honda.”

But the dealership is confident there is another possibility behind the dead rodent.

“If a rodent decides to crawl into their car at any time, it may not be there when we look at it,” he said.

She’s been told by Honda Canada if she goes to another dealership, she’ll probably have to pay for a diagnosis. It’s something she sees as being unnecessary since the problem appears to be stuck in the vent.

“I just want to get rid of (the rodent); they (Honda) were supposed to get rid of it before, but I don’t know,” Roma-March said.

The NOW reached out to Honda Canada media relations for comment but did not hear back prior to press deadline.

City now Man’s body found in pool Burnaby Mounties are trying to figure out how the body of a man ended up in a backyard pool at a home near Crest Plaza.

The owners of a home in the 7800 block of Langley Street made the grisly discovery Friday evening when they found the body in their pool and called police.

RCMP Staff Sgt. Maj. John Buis said there is

nothing to suggest the death is suspicious, adding investigators are waiting for autopsy results and confirmation of the man’s identification.

The dead man had no identification.

“We believe it may be one of our missing people from last year,” he told the NOW, adding the remains appeared to have been in

the water for some time.

Police are also trying to notify the deceased’s family, which could take days, Buis said.

Buis said investigators will be trying to figure out how the man ended up in the pool, noting the pool had a motorized cover that hadn’t been opened since last fall.

According to a staff report, the study will also examine the service needs and facility requirements to provide both dry floor space and ice surface.The study will also look at a program to not only include the ice rink, but other amenities like public meeting space, bulk storage, limited seating

There are currently three city-owned rinks in Burnaby: Bill Copeland Sports Centre, Burnaby Lake Arena and Kensington Arena.

The Bill Copeland was the last city arena to be built, back in 1997.

While the city wants the feasibility study to focus on the location and two rinks, Ellenwood said the study still needs to determine what’s best for the site.

The city has put aside $22 million out of the

Film captures 100 years of change

Documentary features students’ stories through the decades at Gilmore Community School in the Heights

Back in the day, the only students who stayed at Gilmore Community School to eat their lunch were the Crabtown kids.

The uphill hike to Gilmore from the squatters’ shacks along the Burrard Inlet was too much to return home for lunch and make it back to school on time.

This is just one of the tales featured in an upcoming screening of 100Years at Gilmore Community School, a documentary shot and produced byYunuen Perez Vertti, featuring interviews with students from decades past.

Projects like this give a history to a community

“I was really fascinated by everybody and how connected they were and how this school really played a big role in so many people’s lives,” said Perez Vertti.

The film marks Gilmore’s 100th anniversary and highlights students’ lived experiences through the Great Depression, the Second World War and the 1960s. Over those decades, the school’s population reflected the changing demographics in Burnaby.

“In the pictures I’ve seen, you can see the different ethnicities that have changed the face of Gilmore,” Perez Vertti said.

only one or two Asian students, but by the ’80s and ’90s, the school becomes much more diverse, Perez Vertti explained.

The Burnaby Heights Neighbourhood Association partnered with Perez Vertti to make the film.

“We talk about how our communities are being lost,” she said. “Projects like this give a history to a community.There’s a lot more motivation to be part of it and see how a school contributes to that sense of community.”

Earthquake victims need water filters Jennifer Moreau

Two Burnaby residents are calling on their neighbours to help victims of a 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit Ecuador in April.

Daniel and Jessica Colmont are collecting water filters to send to their home country, as the filters are needed to ensure people have clean drinking water.

The Colmonts have teamed up with other Ecuadorians living in Canada, and their goal is to send 100 water filters to quake victims by the end of the month.

Theatre groups look north Unique take on public lectures takes to the stage at Shadbolt Centre If the words “public lecture” make you yawn, you’ll need to take a look at this theatrical experience.

Theatre Replacement and Rough House Productions are taking a unique and playful look at the idea of public lecture with their new creation at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts.

The companies are bringing Three Lectures on the North to the stage May 18 to 21 at the Shadbolt’s Studio Theatre.

As the name suggests, the production centres around three speeches on the subject of Canada’s North – which, a press release notes, is “a region many of us use to define our country, but few of us have actually experienced.”

The lectures feature the writing of Marie Clements, Clare Duffy and James Long, with topics that flow from the ideas of a new northern superhuman, able to withstand harsh conditions and tap the untapped wilderness, to our own fetishization of the North, from the Franklin Expedition to Stephen Harper’s “Arctic sovereignty” legacy.

Libraries host art shows Art lovers have two new exhibitions to check out in Burnaby, thanks to the Burnaby Art Gallery’s offsite exhibition program.

The gallery has opened two exhibitions at Burnaby Public Library branches: Randall Anderson: Noticings at the Metrotown branch, and Eight Prints at the McGill branch.

Randall Anderson: Noticings includes work from a series created by Anderson from 2006 to 2008, when he was enrolled in a master’s program at Concordia University.The works were

made by turning found bulletin board notices over and collaging them together.

“He realized that, with the introduction of so many new digital platforms such as Craigslist and Kijiji, noticeboards were becoming an outmoded form of communication,” a press release notes. “In this series, Anderson has repurposed physical notices by creating layered collages that are each evocations of their time and place.”

It’s on at the Bob Prittie (Metrotown) library branch, 6100 Willingdon Ave., until

July 10.

Eight Prints features a 1959 print portfolio by artists from Victoria, eight of the 12 members of what would become the Point Group – a circle of 12 artists established by German Expressionist artist Herbert Siebner after immigrating to Victoria in 1954.

Want a glimpse into Japanese Canadian culture and a chance to enjoy some choral music?

The Sakura Singers are presenting a concert on Sunday, May 15 at 2:30 p.m. at the Michael J. Fox Theatre.The group is a mixed-voice chorus that sings primarily Japanese songs, both choral suites and folk songs. It formed in 1969 as an informal group of singers and became the Sakura Singers in 1973, incorporating as a society in 2006.

FARMERS’ ALERT The province is calling on farmers to complete Statistics Canada’s agriculture census, which was

recently mailed out to eligible participants.

The agriculture census is open to anyone who runs a farm or agriculture operation, and the data collected, which is expected to be released in May 2017, will help inform B.C.’s agrifood and seafood strategic growth plan.

“It’s an opportunity to provide the only definitive statistical information of the province’s farm sector to industry organizations and agriculture policy-makers,” noted a press release.

A survey circulating through Burnaby’s business community hopes to find out how B.C.’s “misaligned” Family Day affects businesses.

B.C.’s Family Day holiday, first observed back in 2012, falls on the second Monday in February, unlike other provinces, including Ontario and Alberta, and the United States, where it falls on the third Monday of

February.

In February, the Burnaby Board of Trade released a statement calling on the province to align B.C.’s Family Day holiday with that of neighbouring provinces and the U.S. In the statement, board of trade president and CEO Paul Holden said B.C.’s chosen date has been shown to negatively impact business operations.

Now, the local board of trade has partnered with the Surrey Board of Trade

to gather further details on the impact of B.C.’s chosen date.The boards are hoping to find out how their members feel about the holiday and whether it’s a cause worth pursuing.

While the survey is currently circulating amongst the Burnaby and Surrey boards of trade members, Burnaby is inviting nonmember business owners to participate.

The Burnaby Winter Club drew plenty of attention and talk at last week’s Western Hockey League bantam draft.

The BWC Bruins saw eight of 12 eligible players picked by WHL teams in the 15-year-old draft, with a pair going in the first round.

Right winger Sasha Mutala and centre Massimo Rizzo were chosen sixth and 15th overall, respectively, giving the program its best showing, in terms of quantity, since 2013.The quality was also top notch -- not surprisingly since the Bruins copped the 2016 Western Canadian title.

“I’m extremely happy,” said Rizzo, a North Burnaby native. “I was watching it online, both nervous and excited. It’s great to be chosen by a great program like (Kamloops) and I feel very lucky.”

Mutala, a Vancouver native, was selected by the Tri-City Americans.

During the Western Canadians, the 6-foot-tall winger tallied four goals and three assists over five games en route to being named the MVP. In 64 games, he led the league with 97 goals and 100 assists.

“Sasha is a highly skilled, dynamic forward with good size,”Tri-City general manager Bob Tory said in a press release. “He is an explosive offensive player that has a very high compete level.”

Rizzo, who skated on a line with Josh O’Keefe and Ryan Denney, led all point getters at the championships with three goals and eight assists, after compiling 60 goals and 77 assists over the 61-game season.

“This was the first year we played together, although I played against (O’Keefe) before,” said Rizzo. “My focus was to get better on the ice through the year and win a title.”

At 5-foot-10, Rizzo worked hard to get stronger, having lost much of the 2014-15 season when he broke his left wrist, then suffered a dislocated shoulder soon after returning.

Going in the second round, 34th overall, was forward and Burnaby’s Henrik Rybinski to Medicine Hat, while O’Keefe was chosen 106th overall, in the fifth round, by the Moose Jaw Warriors. Moose Jaw also took defenceman Alex Sukunda in the sixth round, while Victoria grabbed two players -- centre Elan Bar-Lev-Wise at 132nd overall, and Continued on page 23

Guard prepares for new challenges as a first-year college basketball player in Florida Dan Olson

Like an open shot from beyond the arc, Jacey Bailey wanted to make the perfect play.

The choices available gave the 17-year-old Burnaby shooting guard plenty to weigh, but in the end she made it look easy.

With the stroke of a pen, Bailey accepted a full-ride scholarship from Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, a community of 89,000 people on the east coast.

Known as a retirement town by some – its where Jerry Seinfeld’s fictional parents retired to – the city north of Fort Lauderdale will also be where the Burnaby Mountain Secondary graduate will launch her missiles over the heads of frustrated defenders.

“When I went on my visit basically everything I imagined I wanted in a school was there,” says Bailey. “It all fit for me.”

The 6-foot-1 hoop star fielded interest from three California universities,Texas Tech and Denver, but it wasn’t sun-and-sand which won her over. It was the prospect of joining a program she felt a quick bond with.

“When I went down there

(coach Kellie Lewis-Jay) told me she doesn’t plan on me being there to be on the bench… I’ll have to do the work but the opportunity is there.

“She knows the game really well and she put the focus the players and how we can make it a strong program.”

With three brothers (two older), Bailey has grown accustomed to having to earn her spot on the floor. She’s become a double-team target on the high school and provincial team circuits. Over the past four seasons with the Burnaby Mountain Lions she groomed a reputation as one of B.C.’s most dominating players.

Three years with the provincial team led to the past two junior national camp invitations, where she was one of only two from B.C. invited to a second assessment camp in preparation for this summer’s FIBA U18 Americas tournament in Chile in July.

Those experiences have created a foundation where each test and every practice is where you are surrounded by elite players and coasting is not an option.

“It’s pretty intense,” she says of the national camps. “Compared to (high school), over there every-

one is a high calibre player.You learn to play with the people at the next level, rather than being the best player on your team.

“I think it was different, adjusting to that. Rather than having one star player – everyone is a star player.”

The lessons learned at that level have definitely added dimensions to her game, Bailey says.

“The (national camp) coaches are very helpful, always telling us where we need to raise our game.

They tell me I need to be more aggressive, they tell you what you need to hear.”

Playing for the senior Lions since Grade 8, meanwhile, was uniquely different, where much of the pressure had to come from within. It forced her to take a leadership role and build chemistry with her teammates, instead of just shooting out the lights.

A year ago, the Lions achieved a school first when they advanced to the provincials.This year the program nearly didn’t floor a team after the graduation of so many seniors. But head coach and viceprincipal James Morton scrabbled together a roster that featured a handful of new-to-Canada and a few new to organized basketball,

nearly making it to the dance a second straight year.

One of the highlights, though she didn’t mention it, was scoring an eye-popping 55 of her team’s 66 points, including 12 treys, in a record-breaking performance at the Britannia tourney in January.

Bailey admits missing the B.C.s was a disappointment, but remarks how proud of her team she was in coming together and pushing it to the limits.

“I think just being able to play my last year was special. Being able to be a leader for my team, because I was always the youngest on my team coming up, playing up as a Grade 8. Being able to provide leadership for my teammates and to get where we got.”

Now, going to Florida presents a challenge she plans to relish with equal vigor.

“I think the transition from high school to university is probably the biggest challenge ahead,” she says. “I’m used to being away from home, with my Basketball BC and national responsibilities.

“There’s a lot of things I’m going to miss, for sure, like my mom’s cooking and all my friends.

But I’m excited to be there and become part of my new team.”

The Burnaby Lake Rugby club player was added to Canada’s men’s seven squads for this week’s penultimate HSBC Sevens Series tournament in Paris.

While Cejvanovic missed a series tour in Singapore due to injury, he is ready to return to the pitch for the major this World Rugby Sevens series, where Canada will play France, Argentina and the U.S. Canada currently sits 13th in the season standings.
