Former superintendent tops the list

The Burnaby school district’s top-paid executive last year stopped working for the district seven months in.

Former superintendent Kevin Kaardal was paid $187,941.62 in 2014/15 and incurred $6,112.10 in expenses, according to the district’s statement of finan-

cial information posted on the district’s website.

This despite the former CEO’s abrupt departure in February 2015.

For the remaining five months of the 2014/15 school year, Burnaby got one superintendent for the price of two.

Hastings Street was jampacked with people on Saturday for the 32nd annual Hats Off Day parade and street party.

Attendees at Burnaby’s favourite street festival were treated to a parade featuring an array of floats and costumed characters, as well as entertainers who performed all along the street throughout the day. As the mercury soared on one of the hottest weekends of the year, so too did attendance numbers – an estimated 65,000 people turned out for this year’s festival.

About 65,000 people turned out to enjoy Hats Off Day on Saturday People from near and far got a chance to experience first-hand the Heights’ charm this Saturday as Burnaby’s favourite street festival continued its reign.

An estimated 65,000 people came out to the Heights Merchants Association’s annual Hats Off Day parade and street party on Saturday.That’s about 5,000 more people than last year, according to Isabel Kolic,

the association’s executive director.

“Things were still rocking at three o’clock, where usually it starts to slow down at that point, and it was still really busy,” Kolic told the NOW. “It just felt busier; it felt livelier. It was a good time.”

This year’s jungle theme was a big success, too, Kolic added.

walkers really threw themselves into the whole thing, she said, adding that Indiana Jones and the giant boulder, played by two actors, were among the crowd favourites in the parade.

“The boulder was chasing Indiana Jones all the way through the parade, it was pretty funny, and then Tarzan and Jane had a skit with Jane’s dad.They were just performing the skit in repeat

all the way down the street,” Kolic said.

Overall the event was a huge success, she added.

“Hats Off Day has a really sweet local spirit that’s the undertone for everything,” Kolic said. “They can’t help but feel that, ‘Wow, I’m in a community.This is a neighbourhood.’”

Cookie fundraiser prompts a sweet donation Tanya Commisso

It’s a case of “the little cookie that could.”

When Mary Cardle set out to raise funds for the Down Syndrome Research Foundation at the Burnaby Farmers’ Market a couple Saturdays ago, she expected to make a couple hundred bucks, if that.

“Of all the days, it was also raining,” said Cardle, adding she’d never had a table at the market before.

Cardle was selling homemade cookies by donation, with proceeds going towards sponsoring her team for the upcoming Run Up for Down Syndrome race.

“Miss A’s Cookies,” named after Cardle’s daughter Ainsley, who has Down syndrome, ended up drawing in a very generous individual.

A Burnaby resident stopped by her table and handed her $100 for about 20 cookies.That alone, surprised Cardle.

“I said, ‘Are you serious?’

It’s just some cookies!’” she said.

After a short conversation, Cardle said the woman expressed to her how touched she was by what Cardle was doing. But her appreciation didn’t end there.

When Cardle dropped by the foundation the following Monday, she discovered the woman had made a $5,000 donation in Cardle’s name.

“I just burst into tears,” she said. “You always hear about these stories, but it’s never you.”

The woman who made the donation wishes to remain anonymous. Cardle isn’t sure whether she has a personal connection to Down syndrome that would have prompted the donation.

“Something just really resonated with her,” she said.

Dawn McKenna, executive director of the Down Syndrome Research Foundation, said donations like this don’t happen very often, especially not from someone who has no connection to the foundation.

“It’s just really nice to see, especially with all the bad news that’s out there,” she said.

He’s no joke for the U.S. or Canada After months of being dismissed first as a joke, then as a source of worry, Donald Trump has secured the Republican nomination in the battle for the White House and continues to entertain us all in the worst possible ways.

Early attempts to derail the Trump train by the conservative establishment were easily plowed aside. Doubters turned about face and jumped aboard the winning juggernaut.

Previously unimagined by the political elites,Trump as candidate now embodies their worst nightmare.

Those who are waiting for Trump to now become “more presidential” shouldn’t expect it any time soon.That’s not his shtick.

This past week “the Donald” decided to attack a judge who is involved in a class action suit against Trump’s former “university.”Trump flatly said the judge was a “hater” of him

because of his Mexican heritage and went on a tirade against the judge.Trump says because he wants a wall between the U.S. and Mexico the judge is biased. He also said he could say the same if a Muslim judge was ruling on his case.

Following Trump’s logic the only fair judicial system for Trump would be one where billionaire old white guys held the gavel.

In many scary ways, Trump defines where

America’s “infotainment” culture of political discourse has taken the nation.Trump was the second-most covered story by major networks in 2015. (The first was the weather.) And when we say “covered” we use that term lightly.

Trump has gotten where he is by telling people what they want to hear and appealing to the reptile brains of folks unconcerned by how any of his ideas would work in reality, having lost

the ability to distinguish reality from reality TV. He’s the ultimate cartoon version of a politician. One Internet meme described Trump as what would result if all the online commenting sections were embodied in human form.

Make no mistake, what Trump has accomplished is both remarkable and incredible – the purest sense of those terms. America created Trump. And it will be up to voters there to decide

what happens next.

But, unfortunately, we, like Mexico, will feel the tremors from a Trump presidency.

He’s always looking for a scapegoat and it’s just a matter of time before Canadians incur his wrath.

We’d like to believe that Trump’s chances of winning the top job are slim, but then we thought he wouldn’t take the Republican nomination either.

Campaigning has begun Pretty well everything the provincial government (and, to a lesser degree, the Official Opposition) does these days has to be framed against the backdrop of the looming election campaign.

Recent case in point: the bolt-from-the-blue announcement by Education Minister Mike Bernier that school districts would be able to keep $25 million in administration “savings” they had taken out of their budgets.The money could now be spent on what the districts wanted, whether it was directly in the classroom or on administration duties.

What was telling about the minister’s announcement was where he made it and where two other B.C. Liberal MLAs made the same announcement simultaneously.

Bernier was in Surrey, a pivotal battleground in the election campaign.The burgeoning municipality is having one riding added within its boundaries come the next vote, giving it nine seats.

Education is a hot-button issue in Surrey, and the situation there is unlike anywhere else in the province.

While other districts wrestle with the sensitive issue of closing schools because of declining enrolment, Surrey is in precisely the opposite situation.

The population growth in Surrey is escalating, and with that comes more development, which creates more residences, which attract

more people, and the result is tremendously overcrowded schools.

Bernier has recently met with a delegation of Surrey parents, and seems to have secured approval for more capital spending to build more schools at a more rapid rate than first envisioned.

The B.C. Liberals currently hold five of Surrey’s eight seats, and one of them was won by the tiniest of margins.

Based on the 2013 voting results, the new riding should be in the B.C. Liberal win column, but intensely local issues – such as education funding – can be a voting determinant and catch wildfire with the electors.

Hence Bernier’s sudden and intense interest in talking about education in Surrey and handing some money over at the same time.

As we get ever nearer to the beginning of the official election campaign, keep in mind we are in the unofficial one right now and the intensity of it will begin to ramp up.

So expect more off-thecuff government spending announcements, probably focused on the geographical areas the NDP need to score a breakthrough to have any chance at forming government in 2017.

Dog discrimination is unfair to renters

Forcing landlords to accept pets? No way

Dear Editor Re: One-dog rule has Burnaby woman in a bind, Burnaby NOW, June 1.

First of all I hope things work out for Ms. Cardinal and her beautiful dog. On the same topic, I do have a similar longstanding complaint re: bylaws with apartments and stratas. But my complaint is also that places that actually do allow dogs, most of them advertise “dogs allowed with restrictions.” Well, the restrictions are most often regarding the size of dogs, whereas they only allow dogs up to a certain size. In other words, medium and large dogs are not allowed.

To me, this is discrimination, albeit of animals and their owners. Most people with larger dogs are very responsible, because they are larger dogs, and cannot just be picked up and put in your bag, so they are trained to behave.

Larger dogs, in my years of experience, are generally quieter and gentler than many little dogs. I have owned a yellow Lab myself for many years (unfortunately he recently passed after a long happy life), and he was the most lovable dog I have ever known. He actually shied away from little dogs. He never growled, bit or chased another dog or human. He never barked, other than in fun while playing.

I complained to apartment managers about this rule when looking for a place to live with my dog, and they often said that other tenants would be afraid of my dog – ridiculous! No one was ever afraid of my dog. So it is time to change the rules for once and for all, to allow any size of dog, or to allow dogs on individual situations.

Where has Burnaby council’s social conscience gone?

Dear Editor The mayor of Burnaby says that he can not do anything about the string of demovictions that have occurred and continue to occur in Burnaby.

He is supposedly an NDP-aligned mayor who should be focused on the needs of all his citizens. He should work for the current Burnaby residents and not those that may come in the future.

What he could do is freeze further demolition permits. He could freeze rezoning applications and he could freeze development permits. He recently said in an interview that many of those buildings have reached the end of their life, so to speak. Some of those buildings coming down are better built than the ones that are hastily being thrown up in their place. In addition, the plan to make Metrotown the city centre of Burnaby does not need to happen over night but can evolve gradually and at a slower pace.

This demoviction process is creating vast numbers of potentially homeless elderly and low-income people. Where is your social mindedness, Burnaby council? Perhaps it is time for a change.

Wayne McQueen I have to disagree regarding changing the laws to match those of Ontario on forcing landlords into accepting tenants with pets to be acceptable. What you pet nuts fail to acknowledge, is that many people, including myself have allergies to pet dander, and just the fact of having pets in the building means that, even apartments without pets are subjected to those allergens. In the case of this lady, she should find a nice home for her pet, if she cares at all about this gentleman.

The fact that shelters are overpopulated with pets is not society’s problem, it is the BCSPCA’s. If there are too many pets in shelters, then why are we as a society allowing pet rescuers the bring more unwanted pets in from other countries?

Burnaby man presumed drowned in Fraser River

A Burnaby man is presumed dead after he disappeared while swimming in the Fraser River early Saturday morning.

Surrey RCMP were called to Brownsville Bar Park at 11931 OldYale Rd. around 2:50 a.m. on June 4. A group of men told police they had gathered at the park for a bonfire and were drinking alcohol when they decided “to jump into the cold, swift-moving waters of the Fraser River,” noted a press release from Surrey RCMP. The intention was to

swim around the SkyTrain bridge’s pillar and back to shore, but one of the men, a 32-year-old Burnaby resident, did not resurface after he was seen in the water, the release added.

The others tried to find their friend but were unsuccessful, so they called police.The RCMP along with Search and Rescue and the Coast Guard searched the waters, but after several hours, “the tough decision was made to call off the search,” according to the release.

The man’s body was still

missing on Monday, said Surrey RCMP Cpl. Scotty Schumann, spokesperson for the department.

Schumann could not reveal the name of the Burnaby swimmer, noting it’s now up to the B.C. Coroners Service to release information, including identity.

Foul play is not suspected.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to contact Surrey RCMP at 604-5990502.

Calls to the B.C. Coroners Service have not been returned.

New car share biz in town Car share company Evo has expanded its service to three prominent locations in Burnaby.

The company has added cars at BCIT, Metrotown and SFU Burnaby, according to a press release.

“Burnaby was a natural choice for us,” said Tai

Silvey, director of Evo Car Share. “We’ve received a lot of requests from members, saying, ‘When are you coming to Burnaby?’Well, here we are.”

Expansion plans have accelerated due to the company’s rapid rise in popularity, Silvey believes.The compa-

ny, created by BCAA and launched last year, has also tripled its car fleet to include 750 hybrid vehicles.

There are 1,500 Evo members in Burnaby, and Silvey said the company is interested in expanding to other Burnaby sites.

Artist Jessie McNeil’s approach to collage art has earned her an upcoming solo exhibit at Deer Lake Gallery.

McNeil’s exhibition, Urban Subjects, aims to capture everyday snapshots of urban life, reinterpreted through the process of cutting, pasting, smudging and assembling paper.The Burnaby Arts Council is presenting the showcase.

“In Urban Subjects, Jessie McNeil uses assemblage to slow down and capture the moment even more poignantly than photography can,” says the council’s write-up for the event.

McNeil examines pedestrian life in cities such as Vancouver, Helsinki and Tartu, Estonia. She describes her figurative collage work as “dealing with place and memory with an emphasis on cultural history.”

A North Burnaby elementary school teacher is bringing Broadway to the Heights with his youth musical theatre society, Moving Mirror Productions.

Ryan Phelps, a music teacher at Gilmore Community School, launched Moving Mirror in early 2015 after noticing a lack of after-school drama and music opportunities for youth in the area.

“The kids in this neighbourhood have extraordinary talent and want to be involved in programs such as these,” he said

Phelps has been passionate about performing arts since he was a child, leading him to pursue music and education degrees at UBC. He has since directed two musicals at Rosser Elementary. Phelps decided to leap into starting his own production society after attending the iTheatrics Junior Musical Theatre Festival in Atlanta, Ga. last year.

“It really gave me the energy to look at creating something of my own,” he said.

Phelps has now opened registration for the society’s first full-fledged, Broadway-style production, Aladdin Jr., following the success

of Moving Mirror’s intro to musical theatre course. Registration launched in early May and the program is at 50 per cent capacity.

“Seeing my students shine in a way I hadn’t seen them shine before was a treat,” he said. “Just seeing the smiles on their faces after the standing ovation (at Moving Mirror’s last performance) was great for me to see.”

The condensed, 60-minute production of Aladdin will teach students the theatrical, dramatic, musical and movement techniques typical of a Broadway production. Classes are Mondays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Gilmore Community School.

I confess that whenever I came across a green bag labelled for donation after my children had cleaned their rooms, I would rummage through it.

There I might find books and collectible items I thought they would treasure forever. After all, I had spent many hours finding just the right birthday or Christmas gifts at each stage of their lives.

Over time, I realized that such material things (though inspired by love) are not made to last forever nor should any of us cling to them. Kids grow up and outgrow them all.

The best gifts we can give our children are those they will keep forever.

A priceless gift my parents gave me continues to enrich my life, and I’ve done my best to pass it on to my children.Their gift was to always see (and expect) the best in me.

Though my parents were very thoughtful and deliberate in the decisions they made, I suspect that the ability to see the best in brother, sister and myself was a natural byproduct of their love for us.

We were each unique and as flawed as any other kids.

They would give us feedback and correction when we could do better, but they always gave encouragement and praise when we did our best. Much more than looking for what’s wrong in us, they were always looking for what was good.

That simple but profound view – to the see the best in others – is a game changer in everyday life.

More often, we live on the surface of society and when looking at others, stop only on the outer surface.We judge – and then behave – based on appearances, gender, dress or disability, race and roles.We make sweeping judgments, and we forget that we see only glimpses of whole people.

We forget that every person that we pass on the street, sit beside on the bus, and interact with in the course of our daily lives is a complete and complex individual.

Every one of us has hopes and dreams, pain and disappointment. Everyone is someone’s friend or cousin, sibling or parent.When we remember this, we are more

open to compassion and it becomes more natural to treat others with kindness and understanding.

Consider this when you disregard or ignore another human being or when you immediately dislike someone you don’t even know.

We all have good and bad

days, but we can always make someone else’s day better.

With those we live and work with, we can get caught up in our quirky habits and differences.We can take one another for granted and keep a running tally of what we don’t like

about each other. One of the secrets of a happy marriage is to deliberately make more positive than negative comments about your partner. It reminds us to look for and express the best in the other, who in turn feels more appreciated.

For McMahon, her model goes beyond just teaching youth the basics.

“We’ll talk about worms and the importance of composting, the PH level of soil,” she told the NOW. “It’s not just about planting a seed and walking away. It’s the why behind it – what is food security and why is it important.”

McMahon offers a K to Grade 7 science, math, social studies and language arts curriculum, as well as presentations to daycare providers on fun ways to engage children to eat well.

Schools that collaborate with Sprouting Chefs also have an after-school garden club, which allows students and their parents to tend to

the garden after hours.

Since the 20-foot-by-20foot garden at Forest Grove Elementary sprouted, McMahon has had a hand in getting 21 more school gardens off the ground in the Burnaby school district.

If we want to change the eating habits of children, … you need to do more than just teach them how to cook it.

to come in with a full program that happens all year through, so you can really develop that appreciation of food and the environment at the same time.”

McMahon added school gardens are needed all over the Lower Mainland, especially in dense municipalities like Burnaby.

The June 11 fundraiser at the Burnaby Lake Rowing Pavilion will feature keynote speaker David Suzuki. Students will also be demonstrating what they’ve learned in McMahon’s cooking classes and in their garden clubs.

Attendees can shop the vendor tables and bid in the silent auction. Light refreshments and appetizers will be provided.

Corrales Nelson cruises to B.C. triple gold Rare high school track feat a big springboard to a busy summer for St.Thomas More sprinter

As a final foray in high school, St.Thomas More track star Zion Corrales Nelson didn’t delay in going out in style.

The Grade 12 speedster sprinted to three gold medals at the B.C. High School track and field championships, duplicating a feat last accomplished in 1983.

By capturing the senior girls 100-, 200and 400-metre events, the Cal-Berkeley recruit can say “Mission: Accomplished” in regards to leaving high school athletics on a championship note.

“It definitely was satisfying to cross the finish line, that’s for sure,” Corrales Nelson told the NOW. “I came in wanting the three (gold) and although not every race went the way I had hoped, to win them all in my senior year is something special.”

The 17-year-old spun a pair of firsts on Friday, taking the 100m in a time of 11.85 seconds, ahead of West Point’s Katherine Lucas at 12.13.The St.Thomas More senior’s time was a new personal best, erasing a year-old 11.94 mark.

“That’s what I wanted. Coming off the preliminary (heat) I just wanted to have fun with it, and to get the PB was something I was very happy with.”

With barely time to catch her breath, Corrales Nelson strode to the front of the pack in the 400m in a time of 54.90, ahead of Reynolds’ Lauren D’Agnolo at 56.22.

That it came quickly after she had won the 100m race Friday made it all the more eye-popping.

“It definitely makes it tough having them so close, (because) they are different races to prepare for mentally,” she noted. “I have to run basically from the blocks (in the 100m), then between races it was about mentally preparing, getting a quick massage and then run again.”

Her result the next day in the 200m fell short of expectations but was enough to cap a tremendous high school career and earn her co-Top Female Athlete of the meet award, shared with R.A. McMath’s Camryn Rogers.

Corrales Nelson is the first female sprinter, and only second-ever, to claim the three distances at the provincial meet in 33 years.

The Burnaby native now turns her focus to qualifying for the World junior championships as part of a busy summer.

Burnaby boxers reflect on meeting ‘The Greatest’

Muhammad Ali’s influence played a big role in inspiring a pair of local fighters to pursue their dreams Dan Olson

Muhammad Ali’s punch dominated the boxing ring for an incredible 27 years.

His influence echoed exponentially around the world and is still stinging like a bee, including here in Burnaby.

The boxing legend died last Friday at the age of 74 after years of battling Parkinson’s disease.

Burnaby’s Manny Sobral says his own career in the sport was immensely influenced by the one-time world boxing champion and civil rights icon.

“When I started boxing I’d watch so many of his videos, of Ali in his prime, to study his style,” Sobral told the NOW. “He was just an amazing fighter, so fast on his feet.What I learned

was you couldn’t hit what you couldn’t see.”

After having the world heavyweight title and his boxing licence stripped away in 1967 because of his refusal to fight in Vietnam, Ali’s career was stalled during three prime years. Sobral reflected how the Kentucky-born boxer returned with a new fighting strategy that would see him recapture the world title in 1974.

In preparing (to fight George Foreman in 1974) he would lay on the ropes and plan it out, and that was where he showed his patience and smarts,” said Sobral. “He adjusted his style, he let the fight come to him and used his speed, and it was like he was playing with his opponents.

“From watching him I kind of got some of my style. I tried to keep my

hands up, and I think my footwork owes a lot to what he had shown.”

Throughout his life, Ali proved more than a true showman, standing up against oppression and intolerance with flair.

He was the epitome of a man who did what was right, no matter the cost.

“He was the epitome of a man who did what was right, no matter the cost,” said Sobral, who coaches at the North Burnaby Boxing Club. “He essentially gave up the prime years of his ca-

reer standing for what he believed in, no matter what public opinion said.There was no guarantee he’d get another chance. How many athletes would walk away from that, from the millions and fame, today?”

Another Burnaby boxer, Dale Walters, was touched

by Ali’s presence at an early age.

In 1972 as Ali began the climb back to the top of the boxing world, he came to Vancouver to fight Canadian champion George Chuvalo. On the undercard was Walters, at the age of 10 already a veteran of 20 fights.

In an interview with the Prince George Citizen’s Ted Clarke on Saturday, Walters reflected on meeting “The Greatest.” “(Ali) said, ‘What’s your name boy?’ and I said ‘It’s Dale.’

“Then he says, ‘Are you going to be the next champion of the world?’ I was kind of scared and said, ‘Yeah, I’m going to try.’

And then he says to me, ‘Well you might be the next champion of the world, but you’ll never be as pretty as me.’ And everybody laughed.”

It’s been a rough two weeks for the Burnaby junior Lakers.

After launching a new B.C. Junior A Lacrosse League season with promise, the squad has suffered its share of slings and arrows to the tune of six straight losses.

The skid’s latest knock came Sunday when Langley visited the Copeland Sports Arena and exited with a 10-6 decision, one day after the Lakers were trounced 24-3 in Delta.

Against Langley, Burnaby fought an uphill battle much of the way but overcame a 6-4 deficit to stand tied after Kyle Heiling’s 11th goal of the season.

But in the final nine minutes, the visiting Thunder struck with four un-

answered tallies, led by Alek Gibbs’ pair, to walk away with the win.

Missing from the lineup were captain Danny Spagnuolo, who leads the club with 25 goals in 11 games, and Aidan Milburn.

Also scoring for the Lakers were Mason Pomeroy, with two, Jesse Gastaldo,Wyatt Pinder and Damon Prince.

In Ladner the previous day, the host Islanders rattled off 10 unanswered goals in the first and led 16-0 before Spagnuolo put Burnaby on the board.

Netminder Graham Husick faced 68 shots in the one-sided affair.

Burnaby, which sits tied for last place in the eight-team circuit, will have a shot at redemption on Sunday, 7 p.m. when the Islanders pay a visit to the Copeland Sports Centre.

“I was training in Nevada in 1996 with (Ali’s) former trainer Angelo Dundee and he came to visit a couple of times,” recalled Sobral. “(Ali) was still mobile and on his feet, still had that spark, talking and joking…

“In 2009 we met again this time in Vancouver. I attended the premiere of (the film) Facing Ali and I got to shake his hand and eat popcorn beside him. (Parkinson’s disease) had definitely affected him, but he was still a powerful person.

“It was one of the greatest moments of my life, really.”
