Wildlife hospital in trouble Aging structures are forcing rescue group to seek help from the public By Tereza Verenca

tverenca@burnabynow.com

The Wildlife Rescue Association of B.C.’s animal hospital has been gutted due to water damage, wood rot and a rat infestation. The harsh winter took quite a toll on the 30-year-old building by Burnaby Lake, according to programs director Linda Bakker. “It’s pretty bad,” she said. “The hospital building is not functional at the moment.” After the first snowfall in December, staff brought in a pest control company to “encourage the rats out” after a few rodents escaped the freezing temperatures by moving into the hospital. Unfortunately, efforts proved unsuccessful, Bakker told the NOW. Continued on page 3

RAT WOES: Karen Becker, hospital manager at the Wildlife Rescue Association, took the NOW for a tour of the now-gutted facility. Freezing temperatures

this past winter caused rodents to find warmth within the hospital. What was originally thought to be a minor pest problem turned into a scenario that would include ripping out walls and cupboards to find rat entry ways. About a dozen holes were discovered.

Woman struck by car as she tries to save her dog A 30-year-old woman was rushed to hospital with lifethreatening injuries Monday night after being hit by a car on Hastings Street in the Heights neighbourhood. Witnesses on the scene told firefighters they had seen the woman rush onto the street after her dog. “I believe it’s as simple and innocuous as following her dog, trying to get her dog out of the street, just

that natural instinct to protect another person or pet from injury,” Burnaby deputy fire Chief Chris Bowcock told the NOW. Emergency crews were called to the scene at about 8:50 p.m., he said, and took over from a passerby who had initiated first aid on the woman. Over his 22 years with the department, Bowcock said he’s responded to a lot of

similar calls on Hastings. “Hastings has such a great community feeling, especially in the Heights,” he said, “and I think sometimes we forget that that community feeling is kind of split by that major thoroughfare.” The fire department had no information about what became of the dog, according to the deputy Chief. – By Cornelia Naylor, staff

‘We realized it was a bigger problem’

Continued from page 1

“We realized it was a bigger problem and we needed to take more drastic measures, so step by step we’ve done more and more, and one big step was to empty the whole building. ... really dig into the walls, and behind the cupboards, behind the counters to see if there was some undiscovered rat entries. We also discovered, by doing that, wood rot and just damage over the years.” At least a dozen rat entries were found when the building was emptied in late February, said Bakker. This is the most severe incident of its kind, she added, and the first time the hospital has ever been temporarily closed. On Thursday, April 27, the association’s board of directors will decide the building’s fate. Options being considered include renovating the existing space or tearing the whole thing down and bringing in a modular unit. In the meantime,Wildlife Rescue is still accepting patients and caring for injured wildlife. The Burnaby SPCA has offered one of its rooms so staff can triage. Animals that can’t be housed at the Glencarin Drive complex have been transferred to wildlife centres in Abbotsford, Langley and Victoria. With the summer season just around the corner, Bakker said Wildlife Rescue has already received some ducklings. “We’re keeping babies that we get in.We’re moving back into operations without using our main building. It’s a lot of creativity and effort by the staff and volunteers, to convert certain cages into a holding area and into exam spaces, so we think we can do it for summer. We wouldn’t do it if it wasn’t safe or good for the animals,” she explained. The association is looking to raise $50,000 by May 1 for the building rehabilitation project that includes updating the leaking hot water boiler and increasing food storage capacity. Depending on what the board of directors decides on Thursday, that number could be a lot higher, Bakker said.To donate, visit tinyurl.com/WRADonation. The Wildlife Rescue Association of B.C. cares for 5,000 animals annually, far more than the 1,500 the hospital was designed for.

CITY HALL

Burnaby hikes taxes by 2.95 per cent Compared to other Lower Mainland cities Burnaby is in the mid to low range, according to finance director By Tereza Verenca

tverenca@burnabynow.com

Burnaby residents will see a 2.95 per cent property tax increase when they get their 2017 bill in the mail. City council approved the hike, part of the city’s five-year financial plan, at a meeting Monday night.

The increase, which covers the cost of collective agreement, contract and inflation increases, equals $48.39 on the average residential property valued at $1,064,132. Compared to other municipalities, Burnaby is in the mid to low range, according to finance director Noreen Kassam.

“It was something that was definitely digestible. There wasn’t a lot of room to move because a lot of it was due to things that we couldn’t control,” she said, adding Surrey’s rate is 4.5 per cent, Vancouver’s is 3.9 per cent and Maple Ridge’s rate is 3.15 per cent. When all the depart-

mental requests came and all the specific program offerings were looked at, Kassam said the tax hike was near the five-per-cent mark. “The city goes through a rigorous process to bring it down to something that the councillors (can) present to the citizens. From that perspective, we went

through and prioritized our requests and then went back again and sifted through,” she told the NOW. Information about a surplus from the 2016 operating budget will be presented to council on May 1. Last year’s tax increase originally started at 2.95 per cent, too, but was

brought down to 2.65 per cent. The city took $1.2 million from its 2015 operating surplus, which was $8.6 million, according to a 2015 financial report, and put it in the 2016 budget to help minimize impact. Continued on page 4

City now Julian picks up more support Two more NDP MPs have thrown their support behind NDP leader hopeful Peter Julian. Montreal’s Alexandre Boulerice and Regina’s Erin Weir have endorsed the MP from New WestminsterBurnaby, who’s looking to replace Tom Mulcair. “It feels very good. We’re obviously touching a chord with the campaign we’re

running across the country,” said Julian. “In terms of endorsements, we’re in first place.” Other caucus colleagues include Quebec MPs Pierre-Luc Dusseault, Robert Aubin, Brigitte Sansoucy and François Choquette. Julian’s platform plans to eliminate post-secondary tuition fees, which the MP believes is a strong sell-

ing point. He plans to do that by ending tax breaks for the wealthy and shutting down tax havens. Julian has participated in two debates so far, with another scheduled for May 28 in Sudbury, Ont. The New Democrats will name their leader in October. – TerezaVerenca

‘There’s only so low we can go’ Continued from page 3 Asked why there was no movement on the 2017 rate, Kassam said about 2.44 of the 2.95 per cent makes up the collective agreement and the contract increases, while the rest accommodates growth. Had the city gone any lower, she said the public would have seen a cut in services. “There’s only so low we can go because we have to keep the lights on, keep the community centres running, provide the citizens with all the services we’re there to provide that they’re paying taxation for. When

you have contract increases that are greater than inflation, well you’re kind of stuck there,” she said. At Monday’s meeting, Coun. Dan Johnston pointed to the province and B.C. Assessment, which sets the assessed values of the properties. “The city has no control over what those rates are. I know mine’s up quite a bit this year. I understand most people around the Lower Mainland are looking at increased assessments. Because of that process, it’s going to mean that the tax burden is shifted around the

Lower Mainland, so that some people are going to pay more than they should, or feel they should, and other people are going to pay less,” he said. The city has previously asked the B.C. Liberals to freeze assessment at 2015 levels, but that request was denied. The total operating and capital budget for 2017 is $631.9 million. Under provincial legislation, the city must adopt the financial plan bylaw on or before May 15. Property taxes are due July 5.

WATERMAIN FLUSHING The City Engineering Department will be commencing its annual program of flushing and cleaning watermains on February 9th 2017 to May 31st 2017. This activity may cause pressure fluctuations, some discoloration and sediment in the water supply reaching your home or business. These conditions should be of short duration and do not pose a health hazard. If your water appears discolored after our crews have finished flushing, clear your water by running a cold water tap. Blaze strikes parkade

Fire gutted three vehicles parked at Burnaby highrise

Burnaby firefighters braved intense heat and chunks of falling concrete to extinguish a blaze that left three vehicles gutted in a highrise parkade. Crews were called to the Burnaby Centre Apartments on Grange Street at about 9:20 p.m. last Thursday. They arrived to find thick black smoke pouring from the P2 parkade level of the concrete residential highrise. “It’s an extremely difficult and dangerous situation when firefighters go into an

underground parking lot because it’s very hard to ventilate and remove all the smoke and gases,” assistant fire Chief Gavin Summers told the NOW. “Many firefighters have died in situations like this.” Finding the three cars burning near the back of the parkade in the dim light and smoke was a challenge, Summers said, and firefighters had to employ search ropes. They also had to dodge falling chunks of concrete dislodged from the ceiling by the intense heat, according to the assistant chief.

“It was extremely dangerous and challenging,” he said. Summers said one civilian was trapped in a stairwell due to heavy smoke and had to be rescued by firefighters and taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. Other residents were safely evacuated. What caused the three cars to go up in flames is still unknown. “Usually, once they’re burnt beyond recognition, it’s pretty hard for our investigators to find a cause, but at this time it’s under investigation.”

Opinion now OUR VIEW

When the helpers need help helping wildlife Why do people stay up all night to feed tiny birds from eyedroppers? Why do volunteers spend hours washing the oil off of ducks in the hopes they will survive? Why do folks care so deeply about saving the tiniest creatures in our urban world? We’ve often pondered

this question over the years as we’ve covered stories at the Wildlife Rescue Association based in Burnaby. From saving ungrateful skunks to not-very-attractive snakes, the people who devote their time to rescuing injured and abandoned wild things are nothing if not dedicated. There are a lot of good

causes asking for help nowadays. From food banks here in B.C. to feeding people in faraway lands, we hear the call to help others on TV, in papers and from our community leaders on a daily basis. Heart-wrenching videos of starving children fight for space next to heart-wrenching videos of starving dogs

freezing in small kennels. And, of course, there will be pundits who ask why we should help critters when humans need help. To that we say – one does not negate the other. If your heart leads you to help critters, this doesn’t mean you don’t or won’t help humans. If your heart leads you to help humans, this

doesn’t mean you don’t or won’t help critters. All we hope for is that people help anything or anybody they choose. Kindness should not be judged and weighed. Kindness should be appreciated whenever, however, and to whatever or whomever it is shown. The folks at WRA are

looking for help to care for their wildlife charges. It may seem like a small thing to help a small bird fly again – but in a world that often seems too big to make a difference in, that one act of healing a bird is precious. Please take a moment to consider helping those who help our urban wildlife.

MY VIEW KEITH BALDREY

Site C has hit the point of no return After touring the massive Site C dam project last week, I could not help but come away with the impression that no matter how controversial this project is, there is little chance of stopping its completion. Looking down from a high bluff at the site of the dam’s eventual location, giant trucks carrying huge amounts of earth were in perpetual motion. Already, a massive part of the landscape has been cleared or altered. About 2,000 people (80 per cent of them British Columbians) currently work on the site, and that number will grow to more than 3,500 when diversion work on the Peace River begins. Already $1.5 billion has been spent, and a further $2.5 billion is locked up with signed contracts. Will the election outcome affect the future of this megaproject? I highly doubt it.The B.C. Liberals green-lighted the project in the first place, so if that party wins on May 9 nothing changes. Party leader Christy Clark’s tour visited the region last week, allowing the accompanying media to tour the project site, a deliberate strategy aimed at cementing her image as a creator of jobs. The B.C. Greens oppose the project outright, although party leader Andrew Weaver originally endorsed it, which brings into question of the sincerity of the party’s opposition. But the party’s chances of winning the election seem remote. The NDP’s position on Site C is also a bit hazy, and it can change depending on who is being asked about it.

Saanich South MLA Lana Popham, an ardent foe of Site C, has said publicly the project would be sent to the B.C. Utilities Commission with conditions – basically, that the commission quickly render a verdict that kills it outright. However, NDP leader John Horgan’s position is slightly different: he also would refer the project to the commission with no conditions, presumably hoping the commission would render a similar verdict of death. But not so fast. Horgan is on record as originally supporting the Site C dam’s construction. His shift to opposition appears to result from pressure from factions of his party. If his party wins the election and he becomes premier, put yourself in his shoes:Would you, as premier, essentially fire more than 2,000 people and write off $4 billion worth of work and contractual obligations? I rather doubt it. Firing a workforce of that size would tie a political millstone around Horgan’s neck about as big as one of those trucks carrying earth at the Site C location. There are many arguments against the dam’s construction (at $9 billion it’s too expensive, the power it generates won’t be needed for years, it will needlessly flood agricultural land) but it appears they are moot. The project does seem to have reached the proverbial “point of no return” no matter which of the two major parties emerge victorious on May 9. Keith Baldrey is chief political reporter for Global B.C.

Residents protest park fence A Burnaby resident gathered a 122-page petition in August to oppose a chain link fence built in a south Burnaby park because it was allegedly dangerous for cyclists in the summer and tobogganers in the winter. Residents wanted the fence, which was built to encircle a baseball diamond, to be moved to another park or converted into a portable structure. Two cyclists allegedly crashed into the fence over the summer, said the resident.

Lettersnow Are we glorifying war?

Dear Editor: Vimy Ridge was in the news continuously for many days, remembering the 3,600 Canadian soldiers who were killed in three days in a battle on that ridge in France during the First World War, 100 years ago. We have built a beautiful monument in remembrance of the soldiers who lost their lives in that unfortunate conflict. However, I can’t help but wonder whether, by putting so much emphasis on this event, by mentioning, repeating and being proud of our military successes, or by seeing war as a means of finding the identity of our country, we are actually glorifying war itself. When speakers at the remembrance ceremony propound that “our men” laid down their lives so we can live in freedom or a member of the royalty of a “colonial” power suggests those who died were “fighting against oppression,” one wonders whom they are actually talking about. Who was threatening our freedom and who was oppressing whom during the First World War? Would we honour those who died in that battle more if we quietly remembered them and the great loss their death caused to their families, without making so many exclamations about it? Wars are terrible. The American general William Sherman is quoted to have said, “I am sick and tired of killing; war is hell.” My father was in the medical corps in the First World War. He hardly ever spoke about the horrors of that war, but it affected him for some time in his life and led to post-traumatic stress disorder, which later may have been a cause for his suicide. I was not alive

during the First World War, but I am a veteran of the Second World War and was conscripted to fight on the Russian Front. I, and I think many other veterans, would not like to be remembered in such a pronounced way. All soldiers, no matter from which country, were trained and ordered to kill, and they did so. However, it is not easy, even for a soldier, to kill another human being whom you do not know. Are we really heroes by killing each other? Historica Canada had a unique way of honouring the ones who died in recent wars. They made an appeal to the still surviving veterans of the Second World War and other wars, asking if they would be willing to share their war experiences with a younger generation of high school students. I responded and was invited by several schools. Students wanted to know what war was really like, after studying it in their classroom. I tried to take them with me through a day on the front lines. They were very attentive and involved, which I observed from the sometimes very thoughtful questions they asked. A teacher who had invited me to her school wrote to the Historica Canada Memory Project organizer: “The first-hand accounts of his experience as a soldier on the front allowed us an incomparable and invaluable view into the effects of war on real individuals and their families. … His visit far exceeds that of any textbook or film I could have offered my students leading up to Remembrance Day this year.” I hope this experience will encourage these young people to promote and work for peace. Politicos want NEB to extend filing deadline Tereza Verenca

tverenca@burnabynow.com

Two Burnaby politicians are calling on the National Energy Board (NEB) to extend its deadline for statements of opposition to the Trans Mountain expansion project. Mayor Derek Corrigan and Kennedy Stewart, MP for Burnaby South, have heard from citizens who tried to submit their documents through the NEB website but found the Kinder Morgan pipeline is not included in the list of projects. “We have a growing list of constituents that stretches from Alberta to Burnaby whose land is being threatened by this pipeline, and they don’t feel like they can navigate this website or have any kind of say,” Stewart told the NOW. “(There’s) at least 2,200 people on the line. The NEB should be contacting these people and helping them through the process.”

The MP is concerned some residents are choosing not to file out of frustration and some are being denied their last opportunity to have their voices heard. James Stevenson, a spokesperson with the NEB, admitted the e-filing system isn’t perfect. Trans Mountain isn’t listed as one of the projects in the drop-down menu because “it’s not an active hearing yet,” he said. “It’s a software thing, and we’re working on improving the process. ... It’s silly, but that’s the way it is.” Stevenson noted users can still click on “Other” and file their statement of opposition. Affected landowners can also file via fax or mail, he said. “It is absolutely not by intent, in terms of by design, to obfuscate the process, absolutely not,” Stevenson said. “Everything we can do to make it a little easier and to help people, we’re doing that.”

How to comment

Online: www.neb-one. gc.ca/efile By mail: National Energy Board Attn: Sheri Young, Secretary Suite 210, 517 Tenth Ave. SW, Calgary, AB, T2R 0A8

By fax: 403-292-5503 or toll-free at 1-877-288-8803

As for whether filing extensions will be granted, Stevenson said it all depends. “It would depend on the timing involved in terms of an extension. If it was a matter of a couple days because there were glitches, absolutely it’s possible.” Should residents believe they missed the filing deadline, Stevenson said to keep filing. A brief explanation of any late filings due to e-filing problems will be considered.

Burnaby firefighters had to work hard to extinguish an intense Metrotown apartment fire Monday night that sent two people to hospital with second- and third-degree burns. Crews arrived at a 23-floor highrise at 6070 McMurray Ave. at 9:26 p.m. to find heavy smoke and

flames coming from a seventh floor apartment. Before tackling the blaze, however, firefighters had to provide first aid to two people they encountered in the lobby who had been burned in the fire. The two were taken to the burn unit atVancouver General Hospital in serious condition. Once crews got into the apartment, it took a fourminute firefight to knock

down the blaze, according to deputy fire Chief Chris Bowcock. “That’s a large amount of fire because, typically, a compartment fire like that, once you get up and in place, the fire extinguishment is around 40 seconds,” he said. “This was four times as long.” The suite was completely destroyed, according to assistant fire Chief Mike Hur-

ley, but was contained to the one unit. The blaze likely started in the kitchen area, Hurley said, but the cause is still under investigation. Five engines, two ladder trucks and 31 firefighters were on scene. The building was evacuated, and emergency crews provided first aid to one older resident who suffered a cardiac incident.

ANALYSIS: THE RIDING IN A NUTSHELL BACKGROUND: This south Burnaby riding is bordered by Boundary Road to the west, Imperial and Mayfield streets to the north, Fourth Street to the east, and 10th Avenue and Fraser River to the south. Since it was first carved out of the larger “Burnaby” riding in 1966, the Edmonds area has gone to the NDP in 10 of 13 elections. NDP incumbent Raj Chouhan has held it since 2005, after it went briefly to Patty Sahota in 2001, when the B.C. Liberals swept to power, capturing all but two seats in the legislature. Chouhan took the riding from Sahota by 738 votes in 2005 and has tightened his hold in every election since – defeating B.C. Liberal hopeful Jeff Kuah in the last election by just over 2,300 votes. The Greens – a distant third since first putting forward a candidate in 1991 – have lost ground in the riding since winning over nearly 14 per cent of voters in 2001. On May 9, the choices will be: Chouhan, founding president of the Canadian Farmworkers’ Union; B.C. Liberal hopeful Garrison Duke, director of employment at Abbotsford Community Services and owner of his own mentorship and career coaching company; and Green Party candidate Valentine Wu, an IT consultant who has worked with B.C. Hydro, Bank of America and Telus. DEMOGRAPHICS: There’s diverse and then there’s super diverse. Burnaby-Edmonds, according to 2011 census data, is among the most culturally diverse places in Canada. In fact, the chance any two randomly chosen people in the riding will be of different ethnic origins is as high as 85 per cent in some neighbourhoods, according to MountainMath, a Vancouver dataanalysis company. English was the mother tongue of 21,275 residents in 2011, with another 400 claiming French as their first language. A dizzying array of non-official languages (100 by Chouhan’s count) was spoken by 32,505 riding residents – with 13,755 claiming a Chinese language (5,500 Mandarin, 3,815 Cantonese and 4,400 unspecified), followed by 2,805 Filipino (Tagalog), 2,510 Punjabi, and 1,780 Korean speakers. HOT ISSUES: As with its neighbour to the north, housing is sure to be top of mind for BurnabyEdmonds residents. While the riding’s town centre isn’t densifying as rapidly as Brentwood, Lougheed or Metrotown, some of the lowrise apartments that dominate the heart of the area have already made way for highrises, and that trend is sure to impact residents – 6,140 of whom lived in lowrises and 4,295 of whom lived in apartments more than five storeys in 2011. Only 4,865 of the 55,730 private dwellings in the riding in 2011 were singledetached houses. Burnaby-Edmonds encompasses a number of low-income areas, with the average before-tax household income in the riding about $6,000 less than the city average, according to the last available census data in 2006. That may have changed significantly in the last decade, but social programs will likely still be an important issue to voters in the riding. With Burnaby-Edmonds competing with Burnaby-Lougheed for the most and biggest families in Burnaby, the parties’ platforms on child care could also play a role at the ballot box here. WHAT TO EXPECT: With Chouhan’s margins of victory growing over the last three elections, BurnabyEdmonds will likely get less attention on election night than the other local ridings. Chouhan has had strong support in the area east of Griffiths, especially below Edmonds Street, and, even in areas where the Liberals have fared well – in the corridor between Imperial Street and Marine Drive west of Griffiths and in the Lakeview-Mayfield area – the results have been close. Whatever changes have come to the riding’s demographics in the last three years, they alone are unlikely to bolster the Liberals’ support area enough to tip the scales. Chouhan may not be a high-profile MLA, but he is an experienced politician and well known for his constituency work. Duke and Wu, meanwhile, are newcomers to the political arena and will have an uphill battle swaying voters to move away from the status quo in Burnaby-Edmonds.

Communitynow PROFILE

Camy Wong Occupation RESTAURANT OWNER Why is she in the news? It’s been just four months since Camy Wong and her husband Steve Huynh decided to open Poké Bar on Burnaby Mountain, and it’s been nothing but “super busy,” according to the couple. The restaurant, located in the Cornerstone Mews building near SFU’s upper bus loop, offers poké bowls, a Hawaiian food made of sliced raw fish marinated in Asian sauces and seasonings. The fish salad (similar to Japanese sashimi) is often served over rice and has other chopped ingredients, including artificial crab, green onion,

How would you describe poké to someone who’s never tried it? It is Hawaiian sashimi. It’s sashimi cut into cubes – because poké actually means ‘chopped’ in Hawaiian – and marinated in different flavours and sauces. How is poké different from Japanese sashimi? Japanese sashimi is sliced into chunks and it’s not marinated. It’s dipped with soy sauce and (served with) a side of wasabi and pickled ginger. It focuses a lot more on the flavour of the fish, whereas Hawaiian poké is focused on the sauces it’s marinated in. Flavour is really important to us.We make all our sauc-

seaweed flakes, avocado and cucumber. Wong and Huynh originally planned to open Poké Bar last fall, but the permits didn’t come through. The idea was to bring a different kind of food option to the campus – beyond the typical Pizza Hut and Subway chains – and ultimately, to the city. Poké Bar is the first-of-its-kind establishment in Burnaby. The NOW caught up with Wong recently to ask how business is going, what the response has been like and more. – TerezaVerenca

es in-house.There are some places that have opened and serve poké as well, but a lot of them are not as traditional as we are. If you go to Hawaii, this is exactly the way you’d get it; you’d see marinated fish already in the supermarkets or in poké restaurants. The Poké Bar dream started in 2010.Tell me a little bit about it. I used to eat sashimi when I was a child and then I had a really bad experience. It was so traumatizing. Just that taste of raw fish stayed in my mouth and I couldn’t eat raw fish for a really long time. In 2010 when we went to Hawaii, Steve was like, ‘You have to have poké. It’s just different.’ I was like, ‘No, no, no way. I can’t eat raw fish.’ I did and I fell in love with it. Honestly, that was the rea-

son why I started eating raw fish again, from that one experience. Every time we go, we have poké every day. Before we go to the beach, we buy a bulk bowl of poké.We would do it every single day because we knew when we came back, there was none inVancouver at the time. It’s just so weird.Vancouver loves sashimi, and there were none, so we decided to open one up last year and it just so happened, a lot of other people realized the same thing and wanted to open some up as well. How has business been going? It’s super busy. Basically the first week or so, we sold out every day early. We actually had people waiting for us to open on our first day, so it was really good. We didn’t have enough staff in the beginning. As a

family-owned business, we were still kind of learning the ropes and figuring out ... how much inventory we had to have and how to just make everything smooth for people. In the beginning, it was just myself, my husband and my brother and we just got swamped. The same week, we decided to bring a part-time person on board to help us out in the back. It’s just been really, really busy since. What’s some of the feedback you’ve heard from SFU staff and students? They love the fact that it’s fresh. It’s relatively healthy. Other than just rice, we do have quinoa and also salad for no extra charge. We get a lot of people who come in that need to pull long study sessions or they’re going to be here for exams, or they’re

just here in general for long days. What have been some of the challenges of running Poké Bar? Having enough supply to feed the demand. One of the challenges is just to make sure we always have enough fish (and) enough toppings. It’s always fresh every day, so it’s a big learning curve to know how much to prepare and how to reduce waste because we don’t reuse any of the fish at the end of the night. Other challenges were getting the system up and going and training staff. It’s a very simple system, but we want to differentiate ourselves not just from food but from service. We feel we give really good customer service; we strive to, at least. We train our staff to be very personable, so it’s not just a fast-food experience. It’s

like a whole package of really good food and just being able to connect with our customers. Why did you choose Burnaby Mountain as your location? I went to school here. I’m actually an alumni of the Beedie School of Business. When I came to school here, there were actually a lot less options than what you see now. Students didn’t have much choice when they were up here. A lot of students don’t drive, they bus. When they are up here already, if they wanted to get food, they either have to leave the mountain, which takes a bit of time ... or they eat up here. I decided I wanted to give back and bring this to the students up here. See extended Q&A at www.burnabynow.com.

tverenca@burnabynow.com

This Mother’s Day, Canadian Blood Services wants Burnaby residents to roll up their sleeve or open wide for a cheek swab. The Thanks Mom! Give Life campaign is stopping into Metropolis at Metrotown on Saturday, May 13.The initiative invites people to give four different ways – registering with OneMatch, the stem cell and

marrow network; booking an appointment to donate blood; donating cord blood if you’re expecting; and registering as an organ donor. “Mothers have given us life and we, in turn, can give life to others,” said volunteer Dr. EileenWong. Wong told the NOW the last Thanks Mom! event in 2012 saw some 400 people register. “We’re hoping to have as many as possible because this time we’re going from

10 a.m. to 9 p.m.,”Wong said of the mall hours. She added Burnaby was chosen for the campaign because of its multi-ethnic population. OneMatch currently has 400,000 registrants across Canada, and more than 800 patients require stem cell transplants at any given time, according toWong. She said the stem cell campaign is targeting young people between the ages of 17 and 35, specifically males

of mixed-race origin. “Currently, more than 75 per cent (of registrants) are Caucasian; also, the vast majority are female, more than 60 per cent,” noted

Wong. “For best transplant outcome, a male donor is preferred.” Getting swabbed takes no time at all, she said. “You answer a question-

Celebrating Seniors

Drive a senior around with help from Modo Tereza Verenca

tverenca@burnabynow.com

Volunteering to drive a Burnaby senior to a doctor’s appointment or to the grocery store recently got a whole lot easier thanks to a new partnership with Modo. Burnaby Community Services has teamed up with the car-sharing company as part of the Seniors on the Move program, which works to increase transportation options for Metro Vancouver’s aging population. The non-profit organization has opened up a business account with the member-owned co-op, so anyone looking to volunteer their time to drive a senior from point A to point B can do so at no cost. “You want to tap into volunteers. It’s hard enough to find volunteers as it is,” said Selena McLachlan, Modo’s director of marketing and business development. “When you put another

piece of criteria in, which is you need to own your own car, it becomes a bit of a barrier. Then there are also people who may own their own car, but they’re worried about liability.” Anyone who is at least 19 years of age, has their N licence and zero at-fault accidents in the last two years can become a Modo member. The $10 registration fee will be waived for all applications made under the Burnaby Community Services account. McLachlan said Modo, which was founded in 1997 in Vancouver’s West End and has a membership of 17,000 drivers from the Lower Mainland and Victoria, has a diverse car fleet that is very adaptable to seniors’ needs. “In addition to the compacts, hatchbacks, we have passenger vans, we have SUVs, we even have an accessibility van for wheelchairs,” she explained. “Sometimes the seniors that are being transported, they

don’t necessarily need a wheelchair van, but maybe they’ve got walkers, maybe they have things that require more room.” Even though it’s too early to say whether memberships within this initiative have gone up, McLachlan said the response to the program on social media has been “very, very positive.” “People (are) saying, ‘Wow, this is fantastic. You’re removing a pretty significant barrier for people who’d like to volunteer,’” she said. To learn more and to sign up, call Vicki Goundry at 604-292-3901.

Don’t let the rainy weather keep you indoors

Burnaby offers activities for seniors to do to stay active and social Tereza Verenca

tverenca@burnabynow.com

It’s easy to stay indoors when the weather calls for nothing but rain. To help seniors get more involved in their community and out of the house, we’ve compiled a list of social activities. SOUTH BURNABY NEIGHBOURHOOD HOUSE The Neighbourhood House offers three seniors’ programs: Seniors Together, Seniors Outreach and Volunteer Seniors Outreach Ambassador Training. Seniors Together allows seniors, who may be isolated due to barriers such as language, to connect with others, participate in activities planned by other seniors and have access to information about what other services are available in the community. The meetings run Wednesdays from noon till

3 p.m. and on Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sessions include games, conversation, monthly outings and light refreshments. For more info, call 604-4310400. CITIZEN SUPPORT SERVICES The City of Burnaby offers a host of services for housebound seniors. There’s Grocery Shopby-Phone, where a volunteer will call on Sundays to take your order and do your shopping at the Safeway on Willingdon and Hastings Street. You must be available all day Tuesday to receive your grocery delivery (paid by credit card or Safeway card). The city also has volunteer shopping buddies. You can visit Brentwood or Lougheed Town Centre on Mondays, or Metropolis at Metrotown on Thursdays, and a volunteer will meet you there. Don’t fall for tax scams The Canadian AntiFraud Centre continues to receive reports of tax scams targeting Canadians by email or phone. When fraudsters call, they impersonate the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and say a recent audit has identified discrepancies from past filed taxes and that repayment is required immediately. If payment doesn’t come through, the scammers threaten additional fees, jail or deportation, according to the fraud centre’s website.

Chizuko’s story – A dedicated Citizen Support Services Volunteer

RCMP GRC

ROYAL CANADIAN MOUNTED POLICE GENDARMERIE ROYALE DU CANADA

National Volunteer Week April 23rd to 29th, 2017

Thank you to our many dedicated volunteers. Burnaby RCMP Detachment

Did you know that Fraser Health conducts hundreds of clinics, in various locations throughout the city, all year long? The City of Burnaby – Citizen Support Service volunteers have assisted over 6,400 clients this past year at Child Health Clinics, Breastfeeding Clinics, Parent and Infant Drop-ins, and Flu Clinics combined. Chances are, if you have attended one of these clinics, you would have been warmly greeted by a dedicated volunteer, such as Chizuko Yamanaka. Chizuko and the other 96 volunteers, set up the clinics, assist with checking in clients, arranging appointments, weighing and measuring the infants, and assisting the Public Health Nurses where needed. Chizuko got her start with Citizen Support Services in 2013, after her sister, an existing volunteer, recommended she apply. Since that time, Chizuko has been assisting Burnaby citizens on a weekly basis in various capacities. She began as a Volunteer Visitor where she enjoyed being a friend to a lonely isolated senior, visiting her on a weekly basis. It was not long before Chizuko was pulled in another direction to help as well. Chizuko’s warm and loving nature easily evoked squeals of delight from the babies and sighs of relief from the new mothers that she assisted in the Baby Cuddle Program. The same rings true at all of the clinics she serves at. If you love babies and would like to be a volunteer like Chizuko, at one of the Health Clinics, or for the Baby Cuddle Program, then please visit www.burnaby.ca to apply.

Volunteers bring history to life at the Burnaby Village Museum Volunteers are at the heart of every great program and event at the Burnaby Village Museum. For over forty years, dedicated volunteers have helped the Village become the exciting, vibrant and educational place that it is today. Each year, approximately 160 volunteers contribute over 10,000 hours.

Volunteers help “History Come to Life” for visitors to the museum.

The Museum volunteers bring a diverse and incredible set of talents, experiences and skills to the Museum and help “History Come to Life” for our visitors. Volunteers help to lead educational school programs, assist with community events and share their specialized skills to offer one-of-a kind public programs. There are also Museum volunteer opportunities behind the scenes. Each year in February a Volunteer Appreciation Tea is held to acknowledge the extraordinary commitment of our volunteers. This year we celebrated the launch of an Emeritus Volunteer program. This program allows us to maintain a connection with those who can no longer regularly participate as volunteers. It is an honorary status to recognize those long-term volunteers to show our thanks and respect for their many contributions over the years. We also acknowledge and thank our out-going Honorary Reeve, Russell Collins and welcome Ewan Sheard to the position for 2017.

The museum has two intake periods for volunteers, once in March-April and another in October-November.

Our Honorary Reeve position was established in 2000. The

incumbent, selected from among the Museum’s volunteers, serves as its ambassador, meeting the public and speaking at special events. The position of Reeve, in Burnaby, transitioned and is now known as the Mayor. Mr. Alan H. Emmott served as the City’s last Reeve and first Mayor (1958-1968). In Burnaby, during the 1920s, the period represented here at the Village, the Reeve was the most senior administrative position. To our Volunteers, August is known as the month of the Barbeque. This social tradition allows our volunteers and staff a chance to sit back, relax, and to enjoy time together. Many stories are told and friendships formed over a casual meal and copious amounts of lemonade. During this event, as a special thank-you, Museum Staff provide very attentive table service! We continue to streamline and improve our volunteer in-take processes, training and learning opportunities. We have 2 intake periods during the year; March-April for spring and summer opportunities and October-November for the fall and winter. From our last orientation and training session held in earlier this month, twenty attendees were approved and have now been accepted as full-fledged Museum Volunteers! Welcome to the team! More information on volunteering with us is available on-line at: burnabyvillagemuseum.ca/volunteers

Communitynow

Get moving to achieve your optimum health DavidicusWong HEALTHWISE

editorial@burnabynow.com

We were made to move. When we don’t, our health suffers. When we do, we thrive. May 10 is the World Health Organization’s Move for Health Day, and communities around the globe are promoting physical activity. Why? Regular physical activity is essential for both physical health and emotional well-being, but in our electronically connected, automobile-centric society, we’re becoming more sedentary. Consider these seven benefits of physical activity: 1. decreases your risks for heart disease, stroke, diabetes and high blood pressure; 2. helps you maintain a healthy weight; 3. improves the fitness of your heart, lungs and muscles; 4. prevents falls and improves cognition (a healthy body promotes a healthy brain); 5. maintain bone density with weight-bearing activity,

such as walking, 6. improves sleep, and 7. improves emotional well-being. If you don’t think of yourself as an athlete, you don’t have to buy a new workout wardrobe, go to a gym or start marathon training to reap the benefits of physical activity. Here are 7 simple ways to be more physically active every day. 1.Walk or bike to school, work or the corner store. 2. Get off the bus a few extra blocks from your destination. 3. Buy a bright, new umbrella and raincoat, embrace the rain and do an extra walk each day. Make it social by calling on a friend. 4. Go hands-free in your home and walk while you talk on the phone. 5. Dance to your favourite music. 6. Limit your screen time in front of your TV, computer, tablet or phone. 7. Stretch and exercise while you watch your favourite show. If you’re thinking of improving your health and your sense of well-being,

jump on board and join us on Move for Health Day. To celebrate Move for Health Day in Burnaby on Wednesday, May 10, Burnaby’s healthy community partnerships committee has organized a variety of health-related events. During the day, the school district has planned a community walk with some elementary school students and Moscrop School will have a health fair for its own students. For all adults, we have a community wellness fair from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Confederation Seniors’ Centre at 4585 Albert St. in North Burnaby. There will be great displays, people and resources to help you lead a healthy, active life. Burnaby Parks and Recreation offers a variety of free activities at our pools and community centres throughout the day and evening. For more information, check out burnaby.ca. All aboard!Yes, the season is upon us once again. Train enthusiasts of all ages can turn out at Confederation Park to enjoy rides on the Burnaby Central Railway, that perennially popular miniature railway that wends around the park with diesel, electric and, yes, steam locomotives. There’s a concession on site, and the railway can arrange for birthday parties and other special events as well as just regular rides. It’s an affordable day out for the family, with a ticket price of only $3.50 per ride (or 10 ride passes for $30). Kids under three are free. The railway is at Confederation Park, 120 Willingdon Ave. (enter off Penzance Drive). It’s open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends and statutory holidays right through the spring and summer, until Thanksgiving Monday. Check out www.burnaby

Every spring for the past 14 years, the artists of the Gamma Garage have been inviting the community in to check out their work. The four artists are returning this year with their annual art show on Saturday and Sunday, April 29 and 30. The show includes a wide variety of new works in all styles and mediums – with oils, acrylics, watercolour, ink and mixed-media work in sizes from small to large. “The artists have developed very distinct styles, with each producing their own contrasts of subjects,” a press release notes. Sheila Chowdhury works towards abstraction, especially in landscape. Pat Sexsmith focuses on figure and portrait work, as well as botanical studies. DianneYard enjoys working in large-scale landscape and florals, with occasional detailed drawings.Wilma Cook depicts ancient sites and buildings

Water hazard: It was a crowded field at last week’s district track and field meet at Burnaby Central. At right, runners Ryan Goudron (of Burnaby Central, obscured), Burnaby Mountain’s Jerry Sun, New Westminster’s Grace Fetherstonhaugh, Burnaby South’s Shea Janke and Burnaby Central’s Gaven Theys hit the steeplechase with various degrees of success. Above, for some, it’s clear sailing; while others take a bath. PHOTOS JENNIFER GAUTHIER

Late wave lifts Lakers past ’Rocks in jr. opener

Burnaby battles back with a strong third peirod to launch new junior A lacrosse season with a victory Dan Olson

dolson@burnabynow.com

New head coach Jason Dallavalle noted prior to Sunday’s season opener that offence is typically one of the last parts of a team’s game that comes together. Based on the third period power show by his Burnaby junior A Lakers, Dallavalle was dead-on. The Lakers launched the 2017 B.C. Junior A Lacrosse League season with a solid 10-6 victory over the visiting Victoria Shamrocks. Paced by Mason Pomeroy’s four goals, Burnaby displayed a wellrounded performance in a game where both teams had their share of runs. But while the Shamrocks looked sharp to start the game – which was their second of the season,

after a 16-4 win over Nanaimo on Friday – they were swamped by the Lakers’ strong second half. Burnaby erased a four-goal deficit en route to the come-frombehind victory, giving its new head coach an indication of what they can do. “There were stretches early in the second where (our) defence felt a little flat, but halfway through the period you could see us come together,” said Dallavalle. “We started playing more determined, and you could see Victoria sink.” After Burnaby’s Jordan Gabriele opened the scoring midway through the first, the Shamrocks rattled off five straight to lead 5-1 three minutes into the middle stanza. A three-goal run by the Lakers cut it to 5-4, but Victoria’s Ben

Preston picked up his third of the game with 1:20 remaining in the period to make it 6-4. But Burnaby wasn’t done. Pomeroy’s second goal of the day, coming with four seconds left in the middle frame and the goalie on the bench, provided just the right lift. “We discussed it earlier, Jamie (Floris, Lakers’ assistant coach) and I, and thought if we got the ball late we’d take the chance. Sometimes it can burn you, but this time it worked,” said Dallavalle. Pomeroy, a sophomore, counted his third goal just nine seconds into the third to tie the game. Less than a minute later, Gabriele put the Lakers in front for good. The offence kept rolling, with Jesse Gastaldo and Kurtis Shum converting shorthanded opportu-

nities with Brian Madill serving a four-minute minor to make it 9-6. Pomeroy would wrap up his four-goal performance with a marker midway through the third. “You could feel the momentum shifting in the second period,” noted Dallavalle. “In the (second) intermission we had a talk with the players about all the hard work they had put in and how it would come down to who wanted it more. “In the end, we did.” Netminder Graham Husick turned back 37 shots, and was credited by his coach for holding down the fort when Victoria was pushing it in the first period. “(Husick) had one of his better games that I’ve seen,” said Dallavalle. “Early on he really shut the door and kept us in it. “The whole team really stuck

to it, played aggressive, clogged up the middle and were strong on transition. They really checked all three boxes we wanted to focus on.” With the team still missing about a dozen players, off still at university, Burnaby still has some work to do to put last year’s 3-18 record behind them. The last time it posted a winning record during the regular season was in 2009. It’s a very encouraging start. “That (third period) penalty kill was a big point for us; in previous years that would have been our kryptonite and brought us down, but the guys did the little things and got rewarded.” Burnaby’s next test comes Monday, 8 p.m. at the Bill Copeland Sports Complex against the Langley Thunder.

Longtime Burnaby resident Florence Joyce was the lucky winner of the $1,000 shopping spree to Metropolis at Metrotown. Presenting the prize is Lara Graham, publisher of Burnaby NOW, and pictured alongside Florence is her husband of 50 years, Peter, both of whom now live at Mulberry Parc.

Thank you Burnaby for voting us the Best Chocolate Store!

YEARS STRONG

hat were you doing 20 years ago? Chances are, if you’re a person of a certain age, you were lining up to see Titanic, joining the Harry Potter craze, or watching Friends and Seinfeld on network television. The Burnaby NOW, meanwhile, was publishing its very first Best of Burnaby ballot results submitted by our readers. This week we mark a tradition that celebrates not only businesses big and small in Burnaby, but also our readers who collectively helped compile this annual list of what’s Best in Burnaby. While it may be a subjective list, it reflects the tastes and preferences of people who live, work and play in our city. And who knows this city better than its residents? Some of the categories we began with 20 years ago are still around, while others have fallen by the wayside. Consider how many would vote in the category of Best Photo Finishing in this day and age of digital images, or Best Video Store when we have so many streaming and cable options. Our list of favourite places to eat never fails to generate debate. Pizza is typically a hotly-contested category, with dozens of pizzerias offered as the top place for a slice, while there are relatively fewer contenders in the steak or fish-and-chips categories. Ethnic options are also beginning to garner more votes in recent years with categories in Vietnamese, Thai and Korean cuisine growing

in popularity and joining more traditional options such as Indian, Chinese and Greek cuisine. This is a perfect opportunity as we look back to salute a few businesses from 1997 that have served our community well but are no longer. Some of us will remember spending many hours flipping through the vinyls and later CDs at A&B Sound, or visiting the Eaton’s department store, or buying our first computer at Future Shop. Other winners, meanwhile, apparently have established themselves in our readers’ hearts as the only choice in their respective categories. To name a few, Cobbett & Cotton, South Burnaby Veterinary Hospital, Oasis Car Wash, Jubilee Cycle, Cockney Fish & Chips, Valley Bakery, White Spot and Cioffi’s have led the way year after year, and on this 20th year, find themselves again on top. Thanks must also go to Metropolis at Metrotown for generously offering a shopping spree worth $1,000 to one lucky winner as an enticement for readers to submit their ballots. Finally, we’d like to express our appreciation to you, our valued readers, who have for the last 20 years contributed to the balloting process with enthusiasm. Every year we receive more and more input from you that enriches our understanding of who you are and what you want, which allows us in turn to better serve you. Thank you!  HATS OFF DAY

R

eaders lined up behind Hats Off Day for the 12th straight year, voting it their Favourite Burnaby Festival. The event started in 1989 as a chance for business owners to doff their hats in gratitude to customers and people living in the community, and today it’s the largest street festival in Burnaby with about 60,000 visitors. On the first Saturday of June every year, Hastings Street closes down to traffic from Boundary Road to Gamma for a day that begins with a parade and transitions into an all-out street party complete with entertainment, food, fun and games as well as a show & shine display of vintage vehicles. To add some spirit to the event, each year features a different theme. Last year’s jungle theme brought out Tarzan and Jane, as well as Indiana Jones and a “boulder” chasing him throughout the parade. This year, the event falls on June 3 and the new theme is the Great Canadian Outdoors. “Ever since we introduced themes for Hats Off

Day, there is so much enthusiasm for making our parade feel and look a little bit different each year,” Isabel Kolic, executive director of the Heights Merchants Association, said in a news release. “A friendly competition is a great way to spur on people’s creativity. The spectators and community really appreciate the effort put in by participating groups to stand out from the crowd.” This year, the parade starts at 9 a.m., beginning at Beta Avenue, and will feature floats and costumed participants from Burnaby’s non-profit organizations, community groups, Heights-based businesses, schools and sponsors. A Family Fun Dash is scheduled for 9:30 a.m., whereby families engage in a three-block race with other families and the $5 entry fee goes to the Burnaby Firefighters Charitable Society. Festivities end at 4 p.m. For more information about the festival visit www.hatsoffday.com, email info@burnabyheights. com, or call 604-294-8899 or 604-294-9060.

 MICHAEL BUBLE

T

o the world he’s a Grammy-winning superstar who has sold millions of albums, but to some of us in Burnaby he’s the boy down the street who went to Seaforth Elementary and Cariboo Hill Secondary, and who won our hearts with a smile and a song. For the fifth time in a row, Michael Bublé has been selected by our readers as the Best Burnaby Celebrity. Part of Michael’s appeal in Burnaby is his strong ties to the community. He’s been known to support the Burnaby Hospital Foundation, the Burnaby RCMP, the Canucks Autism Network, Canucks Family Education Centre and the Canuck Place hospice. Moreover, he’s building a home near his elementary school that’s on a 27,000-square-foot

lot with plans to include a tennis court and swimming pool, and reportedly a skating rink in the basement. Singing was a passion for a young Michael Bublé, and as a teenager he took every opportunity to perform, cutting his teeth on numerous nightclub stages and wedding gigs. He also honed his TV stage presence with appearances on the Vicki Gabereau show, the nationally broadcast talk show shot in Vancouver, where he was frequently asked to step in when a scheduled musical guest couldn’t make it. For updated information about Michael Bublé go to michaelbuble.com.

readers favourite outdoor concert of the year

 BURNABY BLUES & ROOTS FESTIVAL

M

usic is at the heart of the Burnaby Blues & Roots Festival, which has been once again selected as Burnaby’s Best Outdoor Concert of the Year. The annual all-day event takes place at Deer Lake Park and includes a beer garden, food trucks and an artisan village, as well as international and local bands showcased in front of an appreciative crowd. An annual tradition in Burnaby since 2000, the festival attracts music lovers near and far with an eclectic lineup of crowd pleasers and hidden gems. Last year’s event featured Vancouver-based Rich Hope, Wes Mackey, Ben Rogers, Billy Dixon, Dawn Pemberton and headliner Colin James. Other performers included Toronto native Lindi Ortega, the Como Mamas, Cyril Neville and the Royal Southern Brotherhood, Frazey Ford and

Cecil Doo-Kingue. Between 4,000 and 5,000 people were in attendance last year, and organizers said the weather was a big pull as hundreds danced under sunny skies and later a star-lit night. Another draw is the setting, which is spectacular. Last year’s new stage included an open backdrop, allowing the audience to appreciate the view of the lake as the late afternoon and early evening light faded from silver to black. This year’s festivities are slated to take place Saturday, Aug. 6 from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m., and while organizers have yet to finalize the artist lineup, you can bet that fans are getting their lawn chairs and picnic baskets ready for the big day. BURNABY’S BEST SPA/AESTHETICS & HAIR SALON Dogs and owners alike love Deer Lake Park.

readers favourite place to walk your dog

 DEER LAKE PARK

T

here’s no shortage of places in Burnaby to walk your dog. Popular places include Central Park, Confederation Park, Foreshore Park, Centennial Trail and Riverway Park. But the Best Place to Walk Your Dog, according to our readers, is Deer Lake Park, which has won top honours in this category for the last four years. Located adjacent to Burnaby City Hall, Deer Lake Park is at the city’s cultural heart as it’s also home to the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, Burnaby Art Gallery, Deer Lake Gallery and Burnaby Village Museum, and hosts numerous outdoor concerts during the summer months. The highlight of Deer Lake Park, especially among dog owners, is the extensive network of trails that criss-cross the park, allowing for a short jaunt in a light rain or a longer and leisurely stroll on a lazy weekend afternoon.

An easy five-kilometre walk will take about an hour starting from the Sperling Avenue parking lot on the east side of the park. Keep left and follow the path as it takes you across a small bridge. Follow the trail as it gently climbs away from the busy beach by the lake, and take the right paved path, which eventually turns to gravel again and leads onto a boardwalk. You can choose to loop around the lake or take a longer path further into the park for a longer walk. One thing to note is that dogs are not allowed onto the beach and neighbouring picnic area, but there are plenty of other sites in the park to lay out a blanket and a picnic. You may even find a spot that gives a glimpse of a skyline beyond the treetops while playing with your pooch to your heart’s content. Truth be told, people love Deer Lake Park too.

 BURNABY BOARD OF TRADE

I

t should come as no surprise that this year’s winner of the Best Sustainable Business is an organization involved with promoting sustainability among previous winners in this category. At the centre of the Burnaby Board of Trade’s sustainability efforts is its Pledge for a Sustainable Community. The initiative is an online resource that helps businesses reduce their environmental footprint. Businesses that take the pledge get advice on how to best reduce their use of resources and waste, as well as advice on travel and purchasing practices to reduce excess expenditures. “I think the value of the pledge is less what we do in the office than it is on how we are able to engage and encourage other businesses to become more sustainable,” says Tessa Vanderkop, manager for marketing, programs and sustainability.

The pledge has won kudos for the business association both locally and abroad. The BBOT won the City of Burnaby’s Environmental Star Award, was a finalist at the Canadian Chamber of Commerce Innovative Programming competition and a finalist in the category of Best Corporate Social Responsibility Project in the 2015 World Chambers Competition in Italy. Prominent Burnaby businesses such as Hemlock Printing and Vancity have taken the pledge, which has in turn won the attention of our readers who recognized them as the “best” in this category in previous years. Volunteers are key to the BNH’s success.

 BURNABY NEIGHBOURHOOD HOUSE

B

urnaby has one of the most diverse populations in the Lower Mainland with close to 60 per cent of the population identified as belonging to a visible minority, so it’s no wonder that the Burnaby Neighbourhood House was selected as the Best Community Services Organization in this year’s poll. The Burnaby Neighbourhood House is a place where new immigrants can come for information and resources, families and individuals can get support and services, and where seniors and youth can gather. In short, it’s what its name implies; it’s somewhere in the neighbourhood where people from all walks of life can gather and find support, whatever their needs. “We are thrilled to receive this honour,” says Antonia Beck, executive director. “Our staff and volunteers work very hard to create a welcoming and engaged community, so this acknowledgement

is a testament to their passion and commitment to Burnaby and the work of our Neighbourhood House.” Volunteers are what make the Neighbourhood Houses in North and South Burnaby a success. They are an integral part of the wide range of programs and services offered. Neighbourhood House’s philosophy is that everyone should have equal access to community programs and services, and such programs should be accessible and affordable to all. To raise funds, the organization hosts a number of events throughout the year, including a gala diamond fundraiser. Upcoming events include the Neighbourhood House Week from May 7 to 13, an Incredible Quest fundraiser event on Sunday, May 8, that involves a foot race challenge and a Neighbours Lunch and open house in the South House at 4460 Beresford Street on May 10.  CACTUS CLUB BURNABY

T

he competition in the Best Patio category has gone from high to fierce as dozens of new patios have made an appearance in Burnaby in recent years. Additional spending on new-fangled patio furniture, heating devices and sound systems are just upping the ante, and Cactus Club is no exception. “We spend a lot of time on patio design and focus on the vibe and ambience of our outdoor spaces as much as we do indoors,” says Christy Murphy, director of communications. “Although every patio is unique there are some elements – like the signature yellow umbrellas, fire pits, fully retractable doors that connect the indoor and outdoor spaces that you’ll find at our many locations.” A great patio offers fabulous views or peoplewatching perches and quick alternatives for those

sudden downpours or cool spells. Cactus Club North Burnaby has all the ingredients for such a patio. “We’re very excited to be recognized for our patios. They’re an essential part of our overall restaurant design,” says Christy. In addition to the physical requirements, is the “software” of a patio – the menu. “We’re just gearing up to launch our 98 days of summer menu where we’ll begin to serve food and drinks that are perfect for patio season,” says Christy. Included on the menu is the Passion Fruit Bellini, a frozen cocktail that made its first appearance last summer and is back by popular demand. “It’s made with real passion fruit juice and puree, and showcases delicious qualities of this delicious tropical fruit.” For more information, please visit www.cactusclubcafe.com.

View of Metrotown from Burnaby Mountain.

readers favourite view

 BURNABY MOUNTAIN

B

urnaby Mountain is a dominant landmark in the city, so it’s no wonder that it is continually selected as the Best View year after year. It features some of the best views of the city, and on a clear day, you can see as far as downtown Vancouver, across to the North Shore mountains and up Indian Arm, as well as across the ever-growing skyline surrounding Metrotown to the south. It’s a great place to bring out-of-town visitors as it gives a great perspective on the layout of Vancouver, rivalling views you might get further afield. Although the views are what attract many to the park and the Horizons Restaurant located on the park grounds, the 26 multi-use trails that cover 28 km in the 576 hectares of this conservation area are what keep visitors occupied and coming back for more.

Abundant wildlife also abounds here, with blacktail deer, coyotes and bald eagles a common sight among the varied ecosystems of deciduous and coniferous forest. Black bears and cougars are less often seen but occasionally spotted near some of the creeks and streams that cross the trails. In springtime and early summer, Burnaby Mountain also features a bloom of colours to captivate the budding horticulturalist. Centennial Rose Garden features more than 900 bushes and countless varieties. While the camera is out, don’t forget to pose next to the sculptures called Kamui Mintara (or Playground of the Gods), which are an unmistakable Burnaby backdrop. These giant totems were created by Japanese sculptors Nuburi Koko and his son, Shusei, and gifted to the city from Burnaby’s sister city in Japan, Kushiro.
